From 3 to 20 July 2021, Bromo and Kawah Ijen volcanoes will be closed for visitors.

Mount Bromo Volcano Sunrise In Indonesia (Travel Guide)

Watching the sunrise at the Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia is easily one of the most amazing travel experiences in the world. You can even climb the crater and look directly into the smoking volcano!

Bromo can be visited on a road trip through East Java , along with other epic sights like the Ijen crater lake and giant waterfalls, or you can fly from Bali straight to Surabaya and visit Bromo on a day tour from there.

We’ve done it both ways, and would love to go again. Either way, the Bromo volcano is a bucket list item you shouldn’t miss on your journey through Southeast Asia.

This travel guide will explain how to go to Mount Bromo, what to see and do there, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Where Is Bromo?

Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia.

It’s part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you can see a cluster of 5 incredible volcanoes (including Bromo), and Java’s highest mountain Semeru puffing out smoke in the background.

Bromo is located between the cities of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo, and you can visit it from any of those places.

How To Visit Mount Bromo

The easiest way to visit Bromo is to fly to Malang or Surabaya, and then book a day tour or a multi-day trip from there. If you’re in Bali, you can also do it in the opposite direction, starting overland from Bali and then ending at Malang or Surabaya.

Bali has direct flights to and from Surabaya (SUB) every day, and a one way ticket can be as cheap as 700k Rupiah ($45 USD). You can shop for flights to Malang or Surabaya at Skyscanner.

Once you arrive in Malang or Surabaya, it’s easy to book a day tour to Bromo or you can arrange everything yourself if you prefer. A full day tour is enough time to see all the highlights of the park.

We normally like to do things without a tour, but this is one case where I think the tour is a good idea because it’s much more convenient and it includes extra activities like Jeep riding around the volcano. Bromo is a bucket list item and you want to do it justice.

Best Tour Package For Mount Bromo

Here’s a top rated day tour package for Mount Bromo starting from Surabaya or Malang.

You can book this with Klook as a private tour or shared tour, and it includes all of the highlights like the Mount Bromo sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, optional horse ride, crater hike at the volcano, and you can also add the Madakaripura waterfall as a bonus to the itinerary.

If you’re wanting to do a multi-day trip, Klook has overland tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. You can even add on a visit to the Tumpak Sewu waterfall .

We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where To Stay

In East Java you have the option of basing yourself in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo, or Mount Bromo itself ( Cemoro Lawang village ).

Surabaya has the most comfy hotels since it’s a major city in Indonesia, and Malang has some great options too. Probolinggo is smaller, but also has a few good hotel options .

Here are some of our top hotel recommendations below for the city of Surabaya, which is where we stayed on our last trip to Mount Bromo.

Staying At Bromo

If you want to stay really close to the action, there are some hotels at Cemoro Lawang village right by Bromo, but they tend to be pretty basic and overpriced for what you get.

Cemoro Lawang is generally not a fun place to stay because it’s very undeveloped and hasn’t caught up to the mass tourism at Bromo yet. That may change someday, but for now, most of the budget friendly hotel options at Cemoro Lawang are really rough.

Our top recommendations there would be Cahyo Homestay Bromo , Good Karma Guesthouse , or Guesthouse Gunung Bromo . Again, don’t expect luxury.

You can see the highlights of the volcano in one full day tour, so it’s not really necessary to stay there longer unless you’re a serious photographer or just want more time exploring the area.

Best Things To Do At Mount Bromo

• mount bromo sunrise.

First things first — witness the famous sunrise at Mount Bromo!

Before you start exploring the mountain up close, you have to see the sunrise from the top of the caldera. Every tour package starts like this, and for good reason.

It’s probably one of the best places in the world to watch the sunrise. The colors are amazing, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Argopuro in the east.

Mount Bromo Sunrise

• Mount Bromo Volcanoes Viewpoint

The viewpoints on the north side of the caldera are where you can get those iconic pics of the volcano cluster.

Your main options are Seruni Point , King Kong Hill , Bukit Perahu , Bukit Cinta , or the highest viewpoint Penanjakan . You can click each of these links for map coordinates.

To be honest, there is very little difference between these viewpoints and the only reason so many of them exist is to help space out the crowds at Bromo, which can be pretty crazy (especially on weekends).

In other words, don’t worry about which viewpoint you go to — they’re all amazing, so just enjoy the epic scenery! Photography here in the early morning is ideal because you’ll get nice shadows and atmospheric fog around the base of the caldera.

Mount Bromo Sunrise Indonesia Volcano Crater Tour

• Sea of Sand

After sunrise, the next stop is the ‘sea of sand’ at the bottom of the caldera. The locals call it Lautan Pasir, which means the same thing in Bahasa Indonesia.

This is a really neat place and you’ll need to pass through it anyway to reach the Bromo crater. You can explore the sea of sand by Jeep, horse, or motorbike.

It’s a perfect photo spot with the steep ridges of the Mount Widodaren volcano in the background.

• Mount Bromo Crater Hike

Possibly the most amazing thing to do at the Bromo mountain complex is the hike to the top of the smoking volcano crater.

The full hike to the top of the crater, starting from the sea of sand, takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.

The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater. It’s not too hard for non-hikers, and even kids can do it.

Be careful at the top because there’s not much of a safety railing, and on a windy day it has nasty sulfur fumes that are hard to breathe. Generally you can’t see red lava here, but you can peek right into the smoking crater of the active volcano!

Mount Bromo Crater Drone

Is The Volcano Safe?

Mount Bromo is generally safe to visit, but it’s a good idea to check the current status before you make plans, otherwise you may not get the full experience if part of the park is closed.

There were eruptions in 2010, 2015, and 2019. Usually no one is hurt, and you can still get some great views from a distance, but at the very least they may close access to the Mount Bromo crater hike , because during a 2004 eruption two tourists were killed by flying rocks there.

Nowadays, the area is closely monitored and they have earthquake detectors underground to anticipate any major volcanic activity.

No one has been hurt by the volcano in almost 20 years, and it gets close to 1 million visitors per year, so overall the safety record is pretty good.

Entrance Fee

  • Weekdays: 220k IDR (~$15 USD) / person / day
  • Weekends: 320k IDR (~$21 USD) / person / day

These entrance fees for Mount Bromo are current as of 2024.

It’s a bit pricey by Indonesian standards, and I wish they would at least make the tickets last longer (like 3 days) so you could get more bang for your buck.

Weather / Climate — How Cold Is It?

Even though this is Indonesia, it can be pretty chilly before sunrise since you’re 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) above sea level, and the sunrise viewpoints are even higher!

The elevation at the Penanjakan viewpoint is a whopping 2,770 meters (9,088 ft). For Indonesia, that’s unusually high.

Temperatures can drop below 7 Celsius (45 F), and that doesn’t even factor in wind chill. It can get incredibly windy on the mountain peaks, and dry season is cooler than rainy season.

However, you’ll only be chilly before sunrise. After that, it warms up pretty quick, and the sun at this elevation is plenty strong.

If you’re too cold at Mt.Bromo while waiting for sunrise, you can also rent a jacket at your hotel, or rent a jacket from one of the many small local shops near the sunrise viewpoints.

What To Bring

  • Jacket: This is essential for sunrise because it can be very chilly. After sunrise, you’ll want to shed the jacket.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Bromo hike. If you go to the crater, you’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Sunglasses: Can be good to protect your eyes from sandstorms in the sea of sand.
  • Poncho: If you visit Bromo during the rainy season in Indonesia (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Snacks: Even though most tours include free breakfast, it’s skimpy and you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: This is useful for hiking before sunrise, especially if you plan to do the crater hike without a guide.
  • Camera: Mandatory! A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the sunrise.
  • Drone: So far, there aren’t any rules against flying a drone at the Mount Bromo volcano, although I wouldn’t recommend doing it at the sunrise point since it’s so crowded. Once you go down to the Sea of Sand, there’s a lot of wide open space to fly without bothering people.

Best Month To Visit

There’s not really a best month to visit Mount Bromo, although any time in the dry season is definitely ideal.

Indonesia’s dry season runs from April to November, and during this time there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is best. This applies to East Java too.

You can still visit Bromo during the rainy season in East Java (December to March), but if it’s cloudy you may miss the sunrise and the iconic view of the volcanoes, so it’s not ideal.

With that said, both of the times we went here were technically on the tail end of the rainy season, and we still had perfect weather, so don’t write it off completely.

In general, it’s hard to avoid the crowds at Mount Bromo because this place has become a bucket list item for so many people. Definitely try to avoid weekends and public holidays, because the park can get especially crowded during those times.

If you want to see an active volcano in Indonesia without any crowds, check out Mount Dukono in North Maluku. This one is more remote than Bromo and requires a harder hike to reach, but it’s spectacular and you might have it all to yourself!

Is Mount Bromo Open / Closed?

Yes, Mount Bromo is currently open for tourists as of 2024! I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of special ceremony, or if there’s unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns.

Mount Bromo will be briefly closed for Wulan Kapitu (January 9-10, 2024), Silent Day (March 11-12, 2024), and Yadnya Kasada (July 6-7, 2024), and again for Wulan Kapitu (December dates TBA, 2024).

You can also check on status updates for all of Indonesia’s volcanoes at Magma Indonesia .

Happy travels!

More Things To See Near Bromo

There are lots of good things to see and do in East Java, Indonesia, including the spectacular Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and a bunch of other nice waterfalls near Malang and Probolinggo.

After visiting Mt Bromo, most travelers head on to Kawah Ijen , a spectacular crater lake on the eastern end of Java island.

You could even climb Mount Semeru, which is Java’s tallest mountain. It’s the volcano peak you see erupting in the distance behind Bromo.

Don’t forget to check out my 1-Week Java itinerary for more ideas of what to do in Central and East Java!

Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Mount Bromo or Kawah Ijen ? And if you only have time to see one of them, which should it be? That’s not an easy question, actually.

In my opinion, Bromo has a more spectacular landscape, and you get to look into a smoking volcano crater. The hiking is also easier compared to Ijen, and it’s closer to a major airport (Surabaya), although the drive from town is longer.

On the other hand, Mount Ijen has the world’s biggest acid lake, with a spectacular turquoise color, and you can see the ‘blue fire’ phenomenon if you go there at night. Ijen also has the advantage of being closer to Bali, and closer to a town (Banyuwangi).

Overall, it’s hard to choose between Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen. I lean toward Bromo as my favorite, but that’s just my opinion and I’m sure plenty of people would disagree with me. If you have time, definitely try to see both places when you’re in East Java!

Hi David. Hope you’re well. My name is Sujay, I’m from Mumbai, India – and I’ve been planning a trip to Bali and Java for the past few months to come hike a few volcanic mountains and shoot some videos for a personal art project. I’ve been reading your blog a lot and have really enjoyed the pics and details – very helpful. However, just 5 days before I was arrive in Bali, I heard the news that the Bali government, just last week, has banned entry to ALL mountains for tourists and locals alike. I was wondering if you know anything about this – is the ban in effect and super strict? Or are there guides still taking tourists on hikes?

The ban is specifically for the province of Bali and whatever places comes under its jurisdiction – I think this includes east Java too. I wanted to know if trips to Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen are still happening or these sites are also banned from climbing?

Are there any other active/smoking volcanoes outside of the official Bali province which you’d recommend? I was also looking at visiting smoking lava fields, hot springs etc…

I’m already here in Bali, so it would be great if I hear back soon!

Thanks so very much. Looking forward, Sujay

' src=

Hi Sujay, thanks for your comment. I just replied on email. The Bali mountain ban being pushed by the governor is not in effect at the moment, and I think it’s very unlikely it will happen. In any case, it wouldn’t affect any of the mountains in Java, including Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Good luck on your trip!

' src=

Could you please elaborate on: “and you can even travel from Bali to Mount Bromo without much hassle.” If we want to travel overland from Malang to Bali, what would be the best way to do so?

Hi Kelsey! We hired a private driver and did a road trip starting from Malang and ending in Bali. We saw a bunch of waterfalls near Malang, and then did Bromo and Ijen on the way to Bali. You can see some of our itinerary ideas here . If you want to simplify it, Klook has multi-day tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. Before covid there were also direct flights from Bali to Malang (and vice versa), but right now the only flight options are Yogyakarta or Surabaya. Good luck! I’m happy to answer any questions.

' src=

Love the post, lots of great information please keep updated….

Hi David, my name is Paula and I be travelling to Surabaya over this weekend for a Bromo Crater hike. Heard this was an off limit activity since the fire. Wonder if this ban has been lifted and if there is anywhere online that I can check for this update? By the way, thanks so much for sharing your journeys and beautiful pictures.

Hi Paula! Thanks for your comment. Bromo officially re-opened for tourism yesterday (September 19). I haven’t heard if that includes the crater hike, but I would think it’s open as well. The fire is already extinguished. Good luck!

✔️ Quick Guide – Best Volcanos for Every Traveler

All About Bali’s Awe-Inspiring Volcanos

Bali has the best of everything; the best beach clubs, restaurants, beaches, you name it, but what really stands out about visiting Bali and Indonesia are the volcanos . Unique to a trip to Indonesia, the volcanos on Bali and the outer islands host some of the best views and hiking opportunities in all of SE Asia – You can’t plan a trip to Bali without visiting at least one volcano, here’s a short list of all the best volcanos in Indonesia.

👉 Tip! Bali is famous for having awe-inspiring volcanos, but did you know that some of the Best Bali Volcano Tours aren’t on Bali at all, but rather on Indonesia’s outer islands? This list includes volcanoes on Bali & on the nearby islands + How to travel to them.

tour volcano indonesia

1. Mt. Batur Sunrise Trek  – Bali

Mt. Batur is by far the most famous volcano in all of Bali and Indonesia. Hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists flock to Kintamani to hike Mt. Batur’s scenic slope for sunrise every day of the year. The reasons Mt. Batur is the most popular volcano in all of Bali and Indonesia are two-fold:

1) It’s an extremely photogenic sunrise spot, most Bali travel experts consider Mt. Batur’s Caldera to be the most beautiful sunrise in all of Bali!

2) Mt. Batur is conveniently located in Central Bali. Officially located in Kintamani, which is only an hour East of Ubud, Mt. Batur is the easiest volcano to get to.

tour volcano indonesia

Combo Tours: It’s only a 1-2 hour hike up to Mt. Batur’s peak for its famous sunrise spot, and once you’re in the Kintamani area there are a ton of amazing other activities you can do. Most Mt Batur Tours also offer add-on services, since the sunrise tour ends around 9 AM, there’s lots of time in the day for more activities. The most popular combo tours for Mt. Batur are White Water Rafting , and taking an Ubud day tour that includes a high-swing over the rice terraces. After climbing Mt. Batur for sunrise, you can also take an ATV or Motorbike tour of the Kintamani Lava Fields.

🚩 Need to Know: There’s a “Volcano Association” ( Tourist Mafia ) that makes everyone use a guide to hike Mt. Batur, and most of the volcanoes in Indonesia.

A traveler enjoys a cup of coffee while sitting on the hood of a jeep as the sun rises over Mt. Batur volcano in the distance. Taking a jeep up the caldera of Mt. Batur is one of the most popular Bali volcano tours.

2. Mt. Batur Via Jeep (For Those Who Don’t Want to Hike!) – Bali

If you don’t want to do the 1-2 hour trek up to Mt. Batur’s Caldera, you also have the option to take a private jeep tour up. The Mt. Batur Jeep Tours are also considered a bit more luxurious and romantic than the trekking ones. Mt. Batur Jeep Tours also usually include a sunrise breakfast served on the roof of the jeep, and an offroading tour of the Kintamani Lava Fields.

👉 Budget Tip: There are also motorbike taxis available to summit Mt. Batur, but you still need to hike around 15 minutes uphill from the motorbike parking station, which makes the Jeep tour a much nicer alternative for those who do not want to trek.

A hiker poses at the peak for sunrise at Mt. Agung volcano in Bali. Trekking to the peak of Mt. Agung for sunrise is one of the most popular Bali volcano tours.

3. Mt. Agung for Sunrise : The Hardest Volcano Hike in Bali

Considered the most challenging hike on the island of Bali, Mt. Agung is perfect for those who want to get a good trek on their holiday.  Both Agung and Batur volcanos in Bali are famous for their sunrises -Your reward for choosing Mt. Agung, the more challenging of the two volcanos, to hike for sunrise is that far fewer tourists will be there. Mt. Agung is located in the far North East region of Bali and is the highest peak on the island at 3,142 meters above sea level.

🥾 How Long is the Hike: The “short route” for Mt. Agung is a 3-4-hour hike up, and the long route is 5-7 hours.

🛕 Tip: Tours to Mt. Agung also usually include Besakih Temple, the largest Balinese Hindu Temple in the world.

Blogger Katie Caf wears a gas mask next to the blue flames at Kawah Ijen Volcano in East Java, Indonesia.

3. Kawah Ijen Acid Volcano : Overnight Tour to East Java

Climbing Kawah Ijen  was the highlight of my first trip to Indonesia all the way back in 2019 – To this day, I still haven’t come across anything quite like it!  Kawah Ijen is the most unique and adventurous volcano in all of Indonesia – Kawah Ijen isn’t just any volcano, it’s a sulfur volcano.

Colorful and poisonous, Kawah Ijen Volcano has an active sulfur mine in its center where miners work 24/7 hauling baskets of bright yellow rocks from the inner crater. The sulfur mine lies on the shores of a bright baby-blue acid lake, whose PH is comparable to battery acid. During the nighttime, tourists can witness sulfurous fumes self-combust and ignite into the world-famous “Blue Fire”.  Mt. Kawah Ijen Volcano is one of the only sites in the entire world where naturally occurring blue fire can be seen.

A hiker wearing red pants stands at the edge of Kawah Ijen Volcano's crater rim. In the distance you can see the acid lake in the crater.

Located on East Java, an island just west of Bali, getting to Kawah Ijen is quite tricky for most travelers visiting Bali. You need to take a 3-5 hour car ride, depending on your starting point in Bali, all the way to the furthest western part of Bali. From there, you can take a ferry to East Java, and then another car around 40 minutes to the base of Kawah Ijen Volcano. 👉 This overnight Kawah Ijen tour from Bali  includes all transport from central Bali to Kawah Ijen, all entrance fees, tour guide services, and meals.

Blogger Katie Caf at Tumpak Sewu Waterfall in East Java, Indonesia.

4. Mt. Bromo & Ijen Volcanos: 3-Days in East Java

Mt. Bromo is one of the most amazing volcano views in all of Indonesia, in my opinion, I believe it to be an even more impressive volcano than Mt. Batur in Bali. However, Mt. Bromo gets far fewer tourists than Mt. Batur because you cannot visit it on a 1-day tour from Bali.   If you have more time in your Bali travel itinerary, it’s well worth it to visit East Java on a Multi-Day tour that visits Kawah Ijen Acid Volcano, as well as other adventurous spots such as  Tumpak Sewu Waterfall , and Mount Bromo Volcano.

Located a bit further inland than Kawah Ijen Volcano, Mt. Batur Volcano is best visited on at least a 3-day tour of East Java. The island of Java is much more remote than the neighboring island of Bali. While you won’t get the luxury cafes and beach clubs you can expect in Bali, East Java is the best spot in all of Indonesia for adventure tourism.

Colorful tents set up at the peak of Mt. Rinjani volcano in Lombok, Indonesia.

5. Mount Rinjani 3-Day / 2-Night Trek – Lombok

Mt. Rinjani is the highest point on the island of Lombok, which is an island located immediately East of Bali.  You can easily get to Lombok by fast boat, local ferry, or by flying. Most travelers choose to visit Lombok after visiting the  Gili Islands  from Bali, as it’s just a 20-minute or so boat ride from the Gilis.

Often touted as being like “what Bali was 20 years ago”, Lombok is a relatively untouched paradise – Filled with lots of great surfing, waterfalls, and beaches. Mt. Rinjani is the only notable volcano on Lombok, and it’s the toughest hike on this list. Perfect for serious trekkers, Mt. Rinjani is usually done by a 3-day / 2-night trek up to the volcano’s caldera.

🥾 Hike Difficulty: 2-3 Day Treks – At 3,726m from its highest peak, Mt. Rinjani is the second tallest volcano in all of Indonesia!

trekking to Mount Kelimutu Lake is one of the best things to do in Flores, in the east Nusa Tenggara regency of indonesia.

6. Mount Kelimutu 3-Color Lake Volcano – Flores Island

Mount Kelimutu within Kelimutu National Park is renowned for harboring a volcano that cradles a tri-colored lake within its volcanic basin. Kelimutu’s three lakes, which are vibrant shades of red, green, and blue, are steeped in local lore. According to the beliefs of the indigenous people, Mae, the deity presiding over the afterlife, once chose this sacred spot to gather and safeguard the souls of the departed. These three mystical bodies of water are known as Tiwu ata Mbupu, meaning the “Lake of Old People,” Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, signifying the “Lake of Young Men & Women,” and Tiwu Ata Polo, denoting the “Enchanted Lake.”

✈️ How to Get There: Mount Kelimutu is located on the outer island of Flores, which many travelers in Indonesia visit after doing a boat tour of the Komodo Islands. You can visit Flores, the Komodo Islands, and Kelimutu Volcano by taking a quick 1-hour flight from Bali.

🥾 Trek Length: Kelimutu 3-Color Crater Lakes is most typically visited via a 2-day / 1-night guided tour.

Blogger Katie Caf stands at the viewpoint at the top of Padar Islands in Komodo National Park, Indonesia.

7. Padar Island Viewpoint via Komodo National Park Multi-Day Boat Tour

Not necessarily a volcano tour in the traditional sense, but I felt like it was worth mentioning in this article because Komodo National Park is made up of an archipelago of around 30 islands, formed by both active and inactive volcanos.  The most astounding view in Komodo is the hike up to the Padar Island viewpoint, which is done for sunrise and sunset. You can only visit the Komodo Islands via island-hopping cruises, which are usually 3-days/2-nights or 4-days/3-nights.

✈️ How to Get to the Komodos from Bali: It’s a little difficult to  get to the Komodo Islands from Bali , you can either take a short and cheap flight to Labuan Bajo, Flores, which is called the “Gateway to Komodo National Park”. Or, you can take the “Backpackers Boat” from Lombok, which sails through the Komodos on the way to Flores.

tour volcano indonesia

💰 Backpackers Budget Komodo Boat: The Backpacker’s Boat is super cheap, but also has very rough conditions (everyone sleeps on mats on the floor in a communal room).> > I recommend Wanua Adventure Tour Company, you have to book in cash.

🚢 Classic Komodo Cruise: For most travelers, a standard 3-day/2-night Komodo Island-Hopping Boat Cruise is the best choice. These boats feature fantastic food, a liveaboard chef, AC, and proper beds for your journey through the Komdodo Archipelago.

🥾 Easiest Volcano Hike on This List: It’s only 15-30 minutes to the top of Padar viewpoint – If you want a short, but amazing, volcano mountain hike on your trip to Indonesia, Padar Island in Komodo National Park is probably my overall favorite.

The day has finally come to visit one of the most attractive volcanoes in Indonesia! One of the last surviving open pit sulfur mines on the planet.

For this climb you can choose between two schedules. Either leave very early to see the blue fire (leave the hotel around 1.30am) or leave more calmly only for sunrise (around 4am). You can choose depending on how tired you are from the trip from Bromo to Ijen, you can decide the day before with your guide.

Once we pick you up from your hotel, you will head towards the village of Licin to get to the side of the volcano to start the upward slope to the crater of the volcano itself. During this trekking, your guide will give you double filter masks to protect you from natural sulfur chemicals.

An amazing, sulfuric sunrise…

Once up, at an altitude of 2883 meters and when it begins to dawn, an incredible contrast of colors will open before your eyes. A scene of yellow earth and a large turquoise blue lake inside the crater that contrast with a suspended white cloud that is continuously expelling the volcano.

In turn, among so much beauty you will see the locals working where it is said to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. These miners go down to the crater of the volcano to load 80 to 100 kilos of sulfur on their shoulders and then sell it.

After this amazing experience on the edge of the Ijen volcano crater, we begin the descent with an incredible panoramic view of the mountains that make up the national park.

Long journey to Bali…

We will take you to your hotel to cool off and have breakfast. Afterwards, we start the long journey to reach Bali. You may be some one hundred metres from the edge of the biggest acidic crater lake in the world, as sulphur vapours and moton sulphur pour out of the crater round you. We suggest you not to stay too much longer at the crater, it is not good and too danger
  • 05:30 AM: See the sunrise from Mt Ijen Summit, and start your walk back up along the inside of the crater edge, and back to Paltidung.
  • 08:00: Arrive back at Paltidung.

Indonesia’s Greatest Sulphur Mine: The Ultimate Guide to Climbing Ijen

' src=

The last time I joined an Ijen tour it was the early morning and I never got to see the blue flames. I was so glad that I had decided to make the trip a second time. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

There are two ways to get to Ijen crater. One route is from Banyuwangi, which is by the coast. The other route is from Bondowoso, which is in the highlands. You can find a quick review of the different options below. Based on my own experience I’d recommend staying in Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi to Ijen

Ijen is a one-hour drive from Banyuwangi. There are a lot of hotel options available in and around the town and several restaurants where you can get food. You can get trains to Banyuwangi from Surabaya and the ferry from Bali docks at the port in the town. There are also more company’s offering Ijen crater tours. For these reasons I found Banyuwangi is the most convenient place to stay.

Bondowoso to Ijen

Some tourists visiting Ijen choose to stay just outside of Bondowoso. Personally I do not recommend this option. The  city is further away from Ijen than Banyuwangi (it’s a 90-minute drive from Ijen). There aren’t as many hotels either. On the plus side it is a beautiful area. The highlands around Bondowoso are covered in tea plantations.

The Ijen Crater Tour

There are lots of company’s around Banyuwangi and Bondowoso offering tours to Ijen. The most popular tour is the Ijen Midnight tour, with pickup at 1 am and drop off some time after sunrise. Many company’s also offer sunset tours, which start around 3 pm with drop off back at the hotel at around 8 pm.

I’ve visited Ijen for sunrise, during the day and for sunset. Based on my experiences I’d recommend joining the Ijen Midnight Tour. On the Midnight Tour you’ll get to see the blue flames of Ijen, more about that later, sunrise over the crater and then finally the crater itself. The sunset tour is not as good (though you can still see the blue fire and you will get a good nights sleep).

Highlights of the Tour

Ijen is probably one of my favourite tourism destinations for first time visitors in Indonesia. The landscape is out of this world. One of the highlights of visiting Ijen is the blue flames, which you can only see at night. The flames appear at the base of Ijen crater and are caused by sulphuric gas catching fire. You can find an article about the flames in the National Geographic here .

One of the other things that brings people to Ijen is the landscape. The volcano is an active sulphur mine. The liquid sulphur comes out of the vents with the gas and spreads out over the floor of the crater turning everything around it yellow (and the crater lake a beautiful and unnatural turquoise). The effect is out of this world and makes for amazing photographs.

The miners that collect the sulphur have become another part of the tourist attraction. These miners lead a difficult life. They carry 70-90 kg or more of sulphur on their backs all the way from inside the volcano crater to the base. It’s an easy two hour walk. The miners get paid just Rp 1,000 a kilo. I tried to lift one of these baskets up and barely managed it. There’s a really interesting article about the sulphur miners of Ijen here .

Preparing For the Tour

The Ijen Crater Tour is hard. The tour takes about 6 hours from start to finish. You’ll be hiking for almost 4 hours uphill and downhill. It’s a lot of exercise and you’ll feel it in your calf muscles. Unless you are a very active person I would recommend doing some exercises leading up to hiking Ijen. You can find some other recommendations below.

Things to Remember

  • If you are coming from Bali to Ijen make sure to change the time on your watch before you go to sleep at your hotel. Java is one hour behind Bali time.
  • The smell of the sulphur gas in Ijen volcano is really strong. Make sure to bring a piece of cloth that you can wrap around your mouth for when you enter the crater.
  • Sounds obvious but bring a flashlight for the climb up Ijen volcano.
  • Make sure to bring some warm clothes, especially a windbreaker, as it’s cold on the top of Ijen.

Hiking Ijen

Before you even start to hike Ijen you need to buy a ticket. The ticket costs Rp 100,000 per person for a foreigner. It is Rp 150,000 on the weekend. The price for Indonesian’s is a lot less, something like Rp 15,000 per person. You should buy the ticket from the office at the entrance of the car park. You can see a photo of the office above.

The first part of the Ijen crater tour is the climb. There are two sections to the climb. The first part is the ascent. The path is not too steep, but it is a long climb. Once you get near the top of the volcano the path loops around the rim of Ijen crater. It takes between 1-2 hours to climb the volcano depending on how fit you are. You don’t really need a tour guide to climb Ijen. The path is easy to follow and there will be lots of other tourists climbing at the same time as you.

When you arrive at the top of Ijen volcano you will be met by locals who are renting gas masks. The gas masks are for the climb into the crater. Although they will tell you that you need to rent a mask to enter the crater you don’t. A piece of cloth around your mouth should be enough. If you have asthma or breathing difficulties I’d recommend renting a mask.

Entering Ijen Crater

From the top of Ijen crater you can see the crater lake and a flicker of light. It takes about 20 minutes to trek to the bottom of the crater. The path is steep and slippery. In many places it is just large enough for one person. If the wind is blowing in your direction plumes of sulphur will cross the path making it difficult to breath. It’s disorientating and it’s easy to get lost (I’d recommend going with a guide).

When you get to the bottom of the crater everything is calm. You don’t smell the sulphur, because the smoke all goes up in the air. This is the best bit of the Ijen Crater Tour. When I visited I spent about 2 hours sitting in the crater. It didn’t feel like a long time. It’s not cold in. The crater is sheltered from the wind. The view of the blue fire is really amazing and there are always lots of interesting people that you can meet and talk to.

If you don’t want to stay long in the crater you can leave your hotel around 2 am. This gives you enough time to see the blue flame and also watch the sunrise. It’s a popular option for a lot of tourists who join an Ijen crater tour. While you can do this, I recommend arriving earlier to avoid the crowds and get a good view.

Sunrise at Ijen

Sunrise is around 5 am. The best place to see the sunrise is from the top of the crater. It takes about 40 minutes to climb out of the crater. If you want to watch sunrise overlooking the lake start climbing back up around 4 am. When the sun does rise over Ijen it happens very quickly. In just 10 minutes the sky turns from a light grey and the colours appear. It’s the best time for photos.

I spent at least an hour at the top of the crater after sunrise walking around and taking photos of the area. It was a really nice way to end the Ijen volcano tour. If you have the energy you can enter the crater again for a closer look at the crater lake. It’s worth the effort as the landscape is unreal. Everything is coloured yellow because of the sulphur and you have the bright turquoise crater lake in front of you.

Trekking Back to Base

The last part of the tour is the walk back down the hill. It took me about 30 minutes to reach the bottom. By the time I reached the bottom of the volcano I was exhausted. My muscles ached and I was having trouble walking (I passed a lot of people who couldn’t walk any further and were paying the miners to cart them down to the bottom). It’s a tough hike, but you are rewarded for the effort by the beautiful views.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed the Ijen crater tour. The Midnight Ijen Tour a lot more interesting than the Ijen day tour. Seeing the blue flames and sunrise over Ijen Volcano is really quite special. Although it’s a long night and it can be cold I would recommend the Ijen tour to anybody visiting East Java for the first time. It’s a really unforgettable experience.

I remember when I woke up at midnight at hiked Ijen – it was exhausting! Especially when you’re starving! It was amazing though – that blue fire is quite something, although there were a few moments where I couldn’t breathe or see anything!

' src=

Hi Salmon, Thanks for stopping by here. Should go and visit Ijen 🙂

' src=

mbak firsta, how much the ticket price for the domestic? and is it so crowded at the crater when you took those blue fire picture? (compared with Bromo maybe). and the last is. would you give some tips to capture the blue fire with a camera? thank you 😀

Hi Gallant, The entrance fee is Rp 10,000 per person. Yes it was pretty crowded that night 🙂 The trick is to hike up fast so you can be one of the first few people who arrive at the bottom of the crater. The other tip is to find a spot where you will be able to take a photo of the blue fire without there being a crazy crowd in frame. Bring a tripod as well to help with taking a photo at slow shutter speed (for the blue fire or when it is dark).

12 Most Amazing Volcanoes in Indonesia

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 4, 2024

As it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of substantial seismic activity, the Indonesian archipelago is home to the most volcanoes in the world. Strung across the country’s 17,000 or so islands are a staggering 150 volcanoes, with many of them still active to this day.

With their smoking calderas, glimmering crater lakes, and lofty peaks, these volcanoes certainly make for stunning natural sights. Such is their majesty, that many of them have been revered and worshiped by locals for centuries. Now popular tourist destinations, these magnificent mounts and their glorious natural surroundings make for some fantastic hiking and outdoor adventuring – provided, of course, that they’re not erupting…

Kelud

Lying in the east of Java, the most populous island in the world, Kelud is an active stratovolcano that is known for its frequent and violent eruptions. The last of these occurred in 2014 when boulders and ash were propelled up to 500 kilometers away. When not covered in molten lava, Kelud makes for some fantastic hiking, with its summit towering to 1,731 meters.

From its rim, visitors can enjoy marvelous views out over the wonderful scenery, which looks particularly stunning during the rainy season when the crater is filled with water.

Ijen

Although Ijen and the various cones, craters, and volcanoes that lie around it certainly make for an amazing sight, the undoubted highlight is its gorgeous turquoise crater lake. Said to be one of just two such sulphuric lakes in the world, Ijen’s acidic waters are now a popular tourist attraction.

The lake looks particularly arresting when smoke and sulphur flames rise off the water in the early morning. Nestled away at Java’s eastern end, Ijen is fascinating to explore. The volcano’s highest point lies 2,769 meters above sea level.

10. Mount Batur

Mount Batur

As it boasts some of the best views in Bali, Mount Batur is one of the most popular volcanoes to hike in the whole of Indonesia. While this means that its trails can get quite crowded, watching the sunrise from its 1,717-meter-high summit is certainly a memorable experience.

This is because it lies in the middle of two concentric calderas, with a glittering crater lake below and the domineering Mount Agung looming in the distance. With lush jungle coating its lower slopes and lots of pristine nature on show, Mount Batur will delight nature lovers and outdoor aficionados alike.

9. Mount Tambora

Mount Tambora

Once one of the tallest peaks in Indonesia, Mount Tambora now stands at 2,850 meters after its colossal eruption in 1815 reduced its size. This was the largest eruption in human history; its outpouring of volcanic ash not only exacted a large death toll but also changed the Earth’s temperature for years to come.

Now, calm, safe, and monitored continuously, the mighty mount has an enormous caldera for visitors to explore, with lots of great views to be enjoyed from up high. As it lies on a remote peninsula on Sumbawa island surrounded by steamy rainforest, Mount Tambora takes some getting to, but it is well worth the effort for its fantastic wildlife and nature.

8. Mount Semeru

Mount Semeru

Named after the mythical mountain that lies at the center of the world in Hinduism, Mount Semeru certainly makes for an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as ‘the great mountain’ by locals. Towering to 3,676 meters, it is the highest peak on Java and dominates the coastal plains that surround it.

The spectacular stratovolcano is blessed in terms of its ecosystems: savannahs and flower-filled fields lie alongside barren, rock-strewn landscapes. This makes it a very popular hiking destination, with the gorgeous lake of Ranu Kumbolo just one of its many highlights.

Besides its already fetching features, conical-shaped Mount Semeru is also known for the impressive plumes of smoke and steam that it regularly emits from its crater.

7. Mount Sinabung

Mount Sinabung

After lying dormant for centuries, Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra violently erupted in 2010 and has been continuously active since then. Rising dramatically above its surroundings, the colossal mount’s lava-scarred slopes soar to 2,460 meters, with four volcanic craters found near the summit.

While massive columns of smoke and ash have all too regularly been spied gushing forth from the volcano, Mount Sinabung does make for some wonderful hiking – providing of course, that it’s not erupting.

6. Krakatoa

Krakatoa

Located between the huge islands of Java and Sumatra is the small island of Krakatoa, one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. Its fame dates back to 1883, when its explosive eruption created seismic shocks and tsunamis, killed countless people, and cooled the Earth’s climate. In addition, it also reduced Krakatoa and the surrounding volcanic archipelago into the caldera we see today.

Although it is considerably smaller than it used to be, Krakatoa still makes for an epic sight with the sparkling waters of the Sundra Strait surrounding it. Now a popular tourist destination, many people who visit the volcano go hiking on its lower slopes or snorkeling in the surrounding waters, which teem with marine life and are home to colorful coral gardens.

5. Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani

The second highest volcano in the whole of Indonesia, Mount Rinjani dominates the delightful national park of the same name and can be found on the island of Lombok. While its 3,726-meter-high peak looks majestic outlined against the sky, the views from its summit are simply jaw-dropping.

Hiking around the national park is a delight: lots of hills and valleys surround the mount, with lush forests and sparkling waterfalls also on display. Of its many sights, the turquoise crater lake of Segara Anak is the undoubted highlight as it is ringed by the volcano’s scenic and secluded caldera rim.

4. Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi

Meaning ‘Fire Mountain’ in both Indonesian and Javanese, Mount Merapi is one of the most active mountains in the country. Due to its regular eruptions and the lava flows and smoke columns that gush forth, the volcano can be quite dangerous to hike. Picking your way through the charred and lava-scarred landscapes is an unforgettable experience.

From the mount’s 2,910-metre summit, you can see five other volcanoes off in the distance. Lots of myths and legends swirl around this mysterious mount, and many locals still bring offerings to the spirits and gods which they believe reside within Mount Merapi.

3. Mount Agung

Mount Agung

One of Bali’s most famous tourist attractions, Mount Agung fills the island’s skyline with its looming presence. Reaching 3,031 meters, the conical-shaped stratovolcano has long been revered by locals, who believe that their ancient ancestors and the gods themselves inhabit its higher realms. As such, numerous temples and shrines have been built on its slopes, with Pura Besakih the most important of them.

While the majestic mount looks magnificent from below, many choose to hike the volcano through the night to watch the sunrise from its summit. Seeing the sunrise over Bali after a tiring but rewarding hike is an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking panoramas wherever you look.

As well as being noted for its beauty, Mount Agung is also famous for the numerous eruptions that took place between 2017 to 2019, disrupting and grounding flights and filling the sky with plumes of smoke and ash. To date, hiking this volcano is banned due to ongoing activity, but you can gaze upon it from neighboring Mount Batur.

2. Kelimutu

Kelimutu

As it boasts not one, not two, but three colorful crater lakes, it should come as no surprise to learn that Kelimutu is an increasingly popular tourist destination. Located in the amazing national park of the same name, the 1,639-metre-high volcano is home to lots of craggy cliffs and rugged rocks that surround its glimmering lakes – the defining feature of the park.

Sparkling in the sun, these three lakes, which regularly change color, stand out magically against the desolate landscapes around them, and many people come to watch the sunrise over their waters. Located on the island of Flores, Kelimutu and its lovely lakes are well worth visiting if you have the chance.

1. Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo

Blessed with one of the most impressive and iconic views in Indonesia, Mount Bromo is set in an absolutely divine spot, with majestic mounts and steaming volcanoes dotted around it. Named after Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, the 2,329-meter-high peak rises dramatically from a low-lying plain that is gloriously known as the ‘Sea of Sand.’

The best view of Mount Bromo and its spectacular backdrop of Mount Semeru and other volcanic peaks is from the viewpoint on Mount Pananjakan, which lies across a sandy plain from it. Watching the sunrise slowly over the stupendous scene is an unforgettable experience and is the main reason why Mount Bromo is one of the most popular tourist destinations in East Java.

In addition to this, the national park in which it lies also has a delightful desert for you to explore alongside Mount Bromo’s gorgeous crater, which also boasts some fantastic panoramas.

I can vouch for the island of Flores, where I lived and worked for two and a half years. Take good malaria precautions there, though. I also loved Bali where we held our conferences and I also visited twice for holidays. No problem with malaria in Bali.

The 5 BEST Volcanoes in Indonesia • (2024 Guide)

The country of Indonesia has 147 volcanoes – the third most in the world. Whilst Indonesia gets the bronze medal for the number of volcanos owned, it gets my gold medal for having the most beautiful ones.

Visiting a volcano is by itself is a timeless and soul-stirring experience , Indonesia adds extra spice to it. Not only are volcanoes some of the most impressive natural sights on our planet earth, but they emit a special kind of energy too.

This energy from the sheer magnitude and power of Indonesian volcanoes is indescribable yet so real. It makes you feel incredibly insignificant, but also alive at the same time. Often a real reminder of how wonderful the natural world is… and how lucky we all are to be conscious and present on nothing more than a floating hot rock.

Indonesia is home to some of the most stunning craters and volcanoes in the world. And the good news is, they’re safe to climb!

So, without further ado, this list is to inspire you to discover what life is really all about: crazy MAD volcanic visuals.

The 5 BEST Volcanoes to See in Indonesia

Be prepared – bring the right gear, faqs about visiting volcanoes in indonesia, final thoughts on indonesia’s 5 best volcanoes.

It was tough to pick just five out of Indonesia’s 147 volcanoes, but I’ve done it. You’re welcome. Here is my handpicked best of a very explosive bunch, ENJOY.

1. Mount Bromo, East Java

Mount Bromo Indonesia

Introducing the reigning, defending, undisputed, BEST volcano in the worlddddd, MOUNT BROMO!

In my opinion, this is not only the most beautiful volcano in the world , it is THE single most amazing thing I have ever seen. Shit looks like a laptop screensaver. I can’t believe this thing exists in real life!

For anyone travelling to Indonesia , a visit to Mount Bromo in East Java should surely be on the bucket list. An adventurer’s paradise, a photographer’s wet dream and an all-around mosh pit of magnificence, Mount Bromo is the real deal guys.

Sunrise is when this girl is at her prettiest. Total slay. Possibly the best sunrise spot in the world, maybe? Or maybe I just have a weird obsession and crush on this place (I do).

You can visit at any time of course, but waking up early for this one is definitely worth it.

Top Tips for Visiting Mount Bromo:

  • Get there for sunrise!
  • Pick a clear day
  • Bring a wide-angle camera lens

Many people choose to get a group tour here as it’s kinda in the middle of nowhere. I had to stay in Surabaya and leave my hostel at 2 in the morning to make it on time.

A popular plan of action to see Mount Bromo is a multi-day tour (two days and one night) including the number three volcano on this list. I would recommend this, especially for solo travelers as it was nice to have made friends on the first trip to take with me for the second one.

After marvelling at the sunrise view spot, you can go down to the giant dusty plain surrounding Mount Bromo and explore the volcano itself. All sorts of mad activities occur here; dirtbikes, horse riding, and even walking around the volcano crater, it’s kind of a free-for-all.

Nevertheless, it’s a relatively quick and easy climb up a staircase to see into Bromo. It’s a great place to bash out an activity and simply sensational to see the beast up close.

2. Mount Rinjani, Lombok

Mount Rinjani Lombok

In second place, we have the one and only, Mount Rinjani in Lombok – an absolute must-do on anyone’s Lombok itinerary. As the island of Lombok is situated right next to Bali, this is the ideal volcanic excursion for all backpackers in Bali seeking some real adventure.

Hiking up this thing is different gravy, it’s not for the faint-hearted. But boy oh boy is it worth it. In order to see the EPIC crater, you’re gonna need to graft; but that’s just how we like it.

Mount Rinjani stands at an impressive 3,726m above sea level. The hike to the summit is a four-day and three-night hike, pretty hardcore stuff. Many tours only go to the crater rim though. DO NOT attempt this without an official guide guys, don’t be stupid.

Whilst the hike may seem extreme, over the four days it ain’t half bad and it’s not all about making it to the top. There are various different viewpoints on the way up making for an all-round awesome adventure. You can often get picked up from where you’re staying if you’re staying local.

Top Tips for Visiting Mount Rinjani:

  • Pack warm clothes!
  • Bring lots of snacks and water.
  • A good pair of shoes is a MUST.

Hiking with a reputable company is a must for this one. Trekking tours are very popular for this hike. The food they prepared was amazing, the gear was top notch and the sherpas were ANIMALS (hiking in flip flops true Indonesian style and carrying bags bigger than the ones that live under my eyes).

One of the highlights of this multi-day hike for me was actually the stunning starry skies visible from Rinjani. On all of the nights, we saw the Milky Way galaxy and dozens of shooting stars (I’m serious). It’s the perfect way to make the most of what is one of the most wonde rful National Parks in Indonesia .

I didn’t even know that was possible, but my sleep seriously suffered from counting stars instead of sheep. In conclusion, maybe don’t do as me and stay up all night and you’ll have the time of your life on this hike.

3. Mount Ijen, East Java

mount ijen indonesia volcano

Ijen is all about the crater. So much so it is usually referred to simply as Ijen Crater. This is one of the coolest day activities in Indonesia and makes for badass-looking photos too. You can actually push it to the limits and find a homestay near the Ijen Crater , so you can immerse yourself in the experience.

Essentially, the trip to Ijen can be done independently, but this trip is the second half of the aforementioned Bromo tour for most visitors. The day starts at 1 am and you take a Jeep to the base before the ascent begins in the dark.

The colour layers on show, as the sun rises over the world’s largest acidic lake crater, look like a painting. This combined with the bright blue colour of the sulfuric crater lake creates some bonkers visuals – for you and your camera.

As the crater lake is sulfuric, a gas mask is provided to ensure you don’t inhale all that smelly eggy goodness. This is great because you can pose for a photo without ruining the backdrop with your face, result!

Oh, and don’t worry about the fumes. Visiting Indonesia is always safe , as is Ijen Crater.

Top Tips for Visiting Mount Ijen:

  • Get there as early as possible to beat the crowds
  • Get a good night’s sleep beforehand!

Despite the view itself being so mindblowing, the locals managed to steal the show. Some of the bravest and most hardcore blokes I’ve ever seen call this crater the workplace. They go into the toxic gas, mine sulfur and then carry it back up and down the volcano, EVERY DAY.

I tried to dead-lift what they carried on their shoulders and failed, miserably. These guys are machines and deserve the utmost respect. Really puts our privileged backpacker lives into perspective.

If you’re interested in a trip to Ijen and Bromo, I used this sunrise tour and found it to be perfect. It wasn’t a luxurious experience, but it was a crazy good time, awesome sunrises and the guides really went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable time.

4. Mount Agung, Bali

Mount Agung rising above rice fields at sunrise

At over 3000m above sea level, Mount Agung is the highest point on the popular vacation island of Bali. It is known as the most sacred mountain on the entire island and is one of the best things to do in Bali .

To scale Mount Agung takes a fit individual between 5 and 7 hours from Besakih. It’s a challenging hike, but very doable, especially with an experienced guide. I wouldn’t recommend hiking Agung without a guide.

There are two popular routes to hike Gunung Agung . The most popular is from Besakih Temple, south of the volcano, this is the route that takes between 5-7 hours and is fairly challenging. there is an alternative way that takes 3-5 hours from the Pasar Agung Temple.

Top Tips for Visiting Mount Agung:

  • Good footwear is a MUST
  • Pack modest clothing for a temple visit
  • Plan your route with your guide

As with many treks, I actually found the descent of this hike more challenging than the ascent. While the climb is difficult, leaning forward put a strain on your muscles, but the descent is very tough on the joints. My ankles and knees were weak, to say the least.

I would strongly recommend you ensure that the footwear and gear you take on a big hike such as this one are up to scratch. Check out the gear section below for some ideas on what you could bring.

5. Mount Batur, Bali

Mount Batur Indonesia Bali

At 1,717m, this is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Indonesia. Mount Batur is a hike for everyone to enjoy.

It’s a super popular tourist destination, so don’t expect the views for yourself. Nevertheless, if you’re in Bali, you’d be silly to miss this day hike.

Another popular sunrise spot, Mount Batur attracts hundreds of tourists a day. It shouldn’t be very difficult to find a guide to accompany you on your Mount Batur Volcano trek if you’re already in Bal.

Top Tips for Visiting Mount Batur:

  • Hire a reputable guide
  • Go as early as possible to beat the crowds.
  • Pack light – it’s a quick hike

Admittedly, hiking Mount Batur is less likely to make your brain erupt with dopamine compared to some of the other volcanoes in Indonesia. However, not everything has to be extreme to be beautiful. This is still a stunning sunrise and 100% a must-see volcano for those in Bali .

It’s a relatively short hike to the summit across varied terrain and shouldn’t take you more than 2 hours to complete. On the ascent, you can find some volcanic vents that are very hot and smoky, and make for cool photos.

Mount Batur is still active, but also very safe to climb. If it’s not already, this trek belongs on everyone’s Bali itinerary . Despite this hike being relatively simple to complete, taking the right gear is always the best way to go.

In this section, I am showcasing examples of some hiking gear that I take with me when exploring volcanoes in Indonesia. Good gear is paramount to any trek, hike, or adventure. I have selected some of my personal favourites to recommend to you guys.

Whilst some items on this list aren’t cheap, good quality stuff never is. This gear is reliable, tried and tested and The Broke Backpacker approved.

  • Trusty day bag – I have the Osprey Daylite Backpack – A good and reliable day bag is arguably the most important piece of gear to bring volcano visiting. A strong and comfortable bag to carry your supplies is essential.
  • Good pair of hiking boots – I use Lowa Renegade GTX Hiking Boots – Not lava-proof, unfortunately. But waterproof with excellent comfort, ankle support and durability. Ankle support and waterproofing are a great idea as most of these hikes involve some questionable terrain.
  • Quality Headlamp – For any sunrise, sunset, or overnight hikes such as Mount Rinjani, this is non-negotiable. I’ve got the Fenix HM60P Headlamp which is BRIGHT.
  • Filter water bottle – Bottled water doesn’t only create litter, it’s extremely heavy and inconvenient to hike with. Filtered and purified water on the go is not – so I carry a GRAYL Geopress .

Hiking Volcanoes can be Dangerous – Stay Protected Folks

The chances of a volcano erupting on you are low, but injuring yourself or getting altitude sickness isn’t unheard of. I would recommend ALWAYS getting good quality insurance when travelling, especially adventure style.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Yes, but be cautious! Many of the highlighted volcanoes on this list are still active, but available to visit. Seismologists are constantly monitoring volcanic activity, so check and confirm safety with your guide a few days before you go.

Mount Bromo – active volcano in Indonesia

Bromo is an active volcano, located in East Java, Indonesia, inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sunrise and a hike to the volcano are the typical postcards views from Indonesia . And it’s no wonder why, as the view is breathtaking. Unfortunately, many people already have realized that, making Mount Bromo one of the most popular tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia.   The massif, where the Bromo volcano belongs to is one of the most visited places on the island.

Bromo volcano is famous not only from its active caldera but also from a spectacular sunrise that you can watch above the valley. In fact, the Mount Bromo sunrise lookout points have an overview of three different volcanoes that are located next to each other. The view is really beautiful and worth an early start. But… because the sunrise over Bromo is so popular it can also get incredibly crowded. Like incredibly.

I know, I know, it can be a bit discouraging and I thought exactly the same when I’ve first heard about it. Luckily, there is a very simple way to enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike on your own without the crowds and to see a beautiful sunrise above the massif for free, without the need of a tour. My tips below help you to have an intimate and peaceful hike to the top of Mount Bromo, help to save you a lot of money and also allow you to choose the best sunrise (and sunset!) viewing spot.

How to organize the mount bromo hike without the tour and with no crowds.

During our 10-day Indonesia trip , we managed to visit beautiful Bali, the paradise Gili islands, climb the fascinating Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java and organize the Mount Bromo hike with sunrise on our own. If we managed it with no problems, you can do it too. You really don’t need a tour for that.

If you are traveling in Indonesia, you can easily combine the visit to Bromo with an amazing hike to the Ijen volcano. Both of the hikes can be done in 3 days (or 2 days with a push). For details on how to climb the Ijen volcano in the best way follow my Kawah Ijen hike guide .

During our Indonesian trip, we were coming back from the direction of Bali , after doing the night hike to the Ijen volcano. You can do the same trip, or the other way round. You can find our 10 days Indonesia itinerary here for a better overview. We chose the route to Mount Bromo through Probolinggo, as it’s the easiest to get there by public transport.

If you’d rather go to Mount Bromo with a tour, this private trip from Surabaya to Mt. Bromo for sunrise is a good choice.

Mount Bromo hike Sea of Sand

#1 How to get from Kawah Ijen (or Bali) to Mount Bromo

If you climbed the Kawah Ijen crater earlier, there’s a high chance that you would want to also visit Bromo. Two volcanoes can be connected by one trip and you don’t need a private tour for that.

After you come back to Banyuwangi (Karangasem) town from Ijen hike, take a train from there to Probolinggo. If you come from Bali, you can take the same train and follow my route from here .

There are normally morning and afternoon trains. If you plan to take a morning train, I recommend booking it in advance online, as they can get pretty full. We took an afternoon train to be able to have some rest in between. The train ride takes around 2 hours and it’s a great opportunity to watch the changing scenery and people on the train.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour, Train to Probolinggo

#2 Probolinggo

Probolinggo is one of the biggest towns close to Bromo, where you can get by train. There is not much to see in Probolinggo itself, so just stay there for the night resting after climbing Ijen or go straight from there to the number 2 on the list. Or you can wander around and look for food markets. We found one on the way back when waiting for our train to Surabaya. Yum!

Where to stay in Probolinggo?

We didn’t have the best experience in the hostel, that we chose, so I am not going to recommend it here.  It’s good to either stay close to the train station, where you arrive, or to the bus station where you leave from. You can try one of those hostels instead, they have a good location and good reviews:

  • Misran Homestay
  • Hary’s Homestay

Food market in Probolinggo, on the way to Bromo hike

#3 Cemoro Lawang

The next step in your journey to Bromo volcano is to get from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. Cemoro Lawang is a small town in the mountains, located at the base of the Mount Bromo hike and a Bromo sunrise trip. The journey from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang takes around 2h along the windy roads and it’s very picturesque.

How to get to Cemoro Lawang from Probolinggo?

There are several ways of getting to Cemoro Lawang. The best and cheapest option is to take a bemo (a public bus). There is also an option for a taxi or a motorbike. I even tried hitch-hiking but it didn’t quite work there.

#1 Take a bemo

The cheapest way to get to Cemoro Lawang is to take a public bus, called bemo. There are several bemos going from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang every day.  But there is a catch.

The bemos leave only when full. Bemo can fit around 15 people and it normally waits until at least 10 people gather up, so the driver can earn some money on the transport.

Sometimes, if there is a lot of people waiting, they can leave quite quickly. Other times, it means waiting for hours for more people to arrive.

You have the option of waiting or you can also pay for the empty seats. You need to calculate if this would make sense for you, as otherwise, you can another way of transport.  Very often travelers, who don’t want to waste a lot of time waiting for more passengers, buy empty seats. The entire vehicle (15 seats) costs 450,000 rupiahs (1 seat is 30 000 rupiahs). It’s probably not the best practice as it teaches the drivers to wait for tourists so they can pay for every seat, but it works if you don’t want to spend the whole day at the bus stop. We were waiting for 1,5h with 3 other people and then we decided to pay the outstanding amount and leave.

If you don’t want to pay for the empty seats, try to arrive earlier in the day as then it’s easier to fill the bus with passengers. If you arrive later in the afternoon, you will have very few chances for the bus to fill up.

Bemos depart from the place near the main bus station in Probolinggo called Terminal Bayuangga  (but not from the station itself). You need to go along the road after you pass the fence to the station and you will see some bemos waiting by the road. There are many local shops and cafes there. If you look on Google Maps, it actually has a name “Public Mini Bus Bromo”

#2 Take a taxi

Another (not a budget) option is to take a taxi. You will frequently hear the taxi drivers offering you a ride when you wait for bemo to depart.

#3 Take ojek/motorbike

We’ve also got offered transport by motorbike or ojek (which is a seat at the back of the motorbike). We were two people, so we didn’t go for it. It’s worth keeping in mind that the way to Cemoro Lawang is quite long (2h in a car) and the roads are windy. The motorbike ride might be very uncomfortable, long, and even dangerous. I do not recommend it.

*From some other reports, I’ve heard that some people were charged 10k IDR for entry to Cemoro Lawang. However, we didn’t need to pay anything.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour

Where to stay in Cemoro Lawang?

I can recommend staying closer to the hiking route to Bromo and close to the path leading to the sunrise viewpoint.

We stayed in Wisma Yog Bromo Homestay . For 386 479 IDR you can get a double room with a shared bathroom , but no breakfast. We had some good food in the warung nearby. Wisma Yog is one of the closest hostels to the non-official, but the widely used route to climb the Bromo crater.

Alternatively, you can choose located next door, Cemara Indah hotel , which has a better standard and is also a great start for Mount Bromo hike and departure point for the Bromo sunrise.

Mount Bromo hike

After arriving in Cemoro Lawang, you can leisurely climb the Mount Bromo crater and admire the active volcano with no crowds.

Mount Bromo is 2,329 meters high, but the hike to the top of the crater is not a difficult one. From the Wisma Yog hotel , where we stayed, it takes around 45 minutes one way. You can easily walk there, no need to take a jeep or a horse. Please, do not take those poor horses.

There is a set of steep steps leading to the top of the Mount Bromo crater, but they are not overly difficult.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano, with recent eruptions happening in 2004, 2010, 2011, and 2015. Therefore always check before traveling what is the current situation.

The landscape looks like from another planet. The experience at the top of the Bromo volcano is also very special – you can hear the inside of the Earth. The sound coming from the middle of the volcano reminds me of the sound of a starting plane. It was my first time hiking the active volcano and it was a great experience.

View to the Sea of Sand and the Hindu temple in Mount Bromo hike

The Sea of Sand

The Bromo volcano lies in the middle of the big plain, which is called the Sea of Sand. It’s a big area, that looks like a desert and it’s filled with the fine volcanic sand from the previous eruptions of Mount Bromo. In order to reach Mount Bromo, you need to cross the Sea of Sand.   On the way to the volcano, you’ll also pass a Hindu temple.

Mount Bromo hike without the crowds

The secret to the Mount Bromo hike without the crowds is to go for a hike in the afternoon or late morning when all the organized tours leave.

That’s it! Easy, right? ;-)

The typical itinerary for the Mount Bromo organized tour is as follows. First, they drive for Mount Bromo sunrise to one of the famous viewpoints like King Kong Hill. After sunrise, all the tours go together for a Mount Bromo’s hike to the crater. They pass through the Park gate which is located somewhere at the beginning of the Sea of Sand. That’s where they normally need to pay the foreigner entrance fee of 220,000 IDR on weekdays or 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays. We haven’t seen that gate and we’ve been told that there is rarely someone there in the afternoon anyway. I guess they make all their money from the insane amount of tours in the morning.

Then, everyone from the organized Mount Bromo tours goes up the crater.

You can imagine the number of people that are there at the same time – insane . It is not enjoyable and not very safe, either. We were watching the jeeps driving up the hill to the sunrise and it was a never-ending line of cars. Hundreds and hundreds of cars were going to one single place at the same time. I don’t know about you, but for me, this is far from enjoyable and just sounds like a nightmare. That’s what we wanted to avoid. And it worked!

When you go to do the Mount Bromo hike after all of the tours leave, it’s only you, the rumbling volcano, and a few other people. Great experience!

Mount Bromo hike, on top of the crater

Follow these steps for the free Mount Bromo hike without the crowds:

1. Find the local entrance to Mount Bromo Park.

The entrance is a non-official one and it’s used by the local horseman. It’s located on the right side at the back of the Cemara Indah hotel (which is just next to Wisma Yog Homestay). There’s a security booth for the hotel just next to it, but when we walked around several times, nobody told us anything. The hotel is located on the hill, so the path takes you straight down to the Sea of sand. You can clearly see the volcano from the top of the hill, next to the hotel, and you can also easily see it when you reach the Sea of Sands, so you will not have any problems with navigation. Walking to the crater from there should take up to an hour.

2. Cross the Sea of Sand in the direction of the volcano. There are some paths you can take, but really it’s just the massive area full of volcanic ash, so you can just cut through and direct yourself toward the volcano on the horizon.

3. On the way, you will pass by the Hindu temple. It was closed when we were there.

4. Pass on the left side of the temple and go towards the left, where you can see a small Bromo crater. The path up the Mount Bromo crater goes uphill and then closer to the crater it changes into a set of steep steps. It is not difficult at all.

5. From the top of the volcano, you have amazing views of the surrounding area and the other 2 volcanoes inside the Bromo massif. You can also clearly see inside the crater. Sometimes the sulfur cloud can be quite thick and the rumbling of the volcano is very loud. The sensation is just crazy!

6. After the Mount Bromo hike, go to sleep early as you need to wake up for another sunrise.

Tip:   Take something to protect your eyes and mouth, as well as the camera from dust. If there is even a little bit of wind, the dust will be everywhere.

Steps to the top of the Mount Bromo crater during the Mount Bromo hike

How to find the best place for Mount Bromo sunrise?

There are several different hills on each side of Cemoro Lawang town, that are good for watching Mount Bromo sunrise. It’s just a matter of finding the best one for you and avoiding the crowds.

We decided to walk to the closest hill, where we found a perfect spot.

In order to catch Mount Bromo sunrise on time, start hiking early. If you stay close to Cemara Indah Hotel, do not leave later than 3 am. We started even earlier, as I wanted to take some night photos before sunrise.

  • Start at Cemara Indah Hotel . It’s the same place where you passed the day before when going down to the Sea of Sand and then hiking to Mount Bromo.
  • From there, follow the road up the mountain. On the night of our climb, it was entirely dark, so we could barely see our surroundings. From time to time there was only a motorbike passing us by. It’s good to have a torch handy.
  • After around an hour, you will see the first lookout point for Mount Bromo sunrise with locals preparing food and tea for tourists. It’s located on the bend in the road. You can see the volcano from there, but the view is a bit obstructed by the trees, so I recommend going further on.
  • After 15 minutes, you will get to another lookout point, which is called the Seruni viewpoint. You will recognize it immediately from the concrete platforms. The best viewing point for Mount Bromo sunrise is located on top of those platforms. We were thinking about hiking further, but the view from where we were was really good (see photos), so we stayed. If you climb to the roof, which is not difficult, you will have a comfortable sitting position. Closer to the sunrise, the place got really crowded, but our spot was still with the best view. In my opinion, there is no point of hiking more and you can settle on the top of the roof in Seruni point for the best view without any obstacles.
  • There are also other lookout points further on the way. The famous one is the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan 1 and 2. It is, however, usually crowded and full of jeeps, as they can drive all the way up.  I do not recommend going there. We were observing hundreds and hundreds of jeeps driving through the Sea of Sand at night to get to that viewpoint for the sunrise. You also have an option of walking to the viewpoint called King Kong Hill and Love Hill.

Mount Bromo sunrise spot

After sunrise, go back to the hotel and catch a bus back to Probolinggo. It’s the same story that was on the way there, so the bemos only leave when there are enough people. However, it is much easier to fill them up, as many people come back to town after sunrise. From Probolinggo you can get a train to Surabaya. There is an airport in Surabaya with connecting flights to Jakarta.

Not fussed about Mount Bromo sunrise? Try the sunset instead!

Honestly, although I always prefer sunrises, mainly for their tranquility and peacefulness of the waking up world, when it comes to Mount Bromo, I would recommend the sunset instead. Everyone knows how crazy the Mount Bromo sunrise is, so if you want to entirely avoid the whole hassle of waking up at night, walking to the viewpoint, and still being surrounded by other people, then you can just sleep in and watch the sunset in the evening. The sunset can be viewed from many places, even in the center of Cemoro Lawang town.

We found a nice spot, where they were also selling Bakso (an Indonesian type of meatball), so we had dinner with a view. This lookout point is located just in the town center. On the junction coming from Cemara Indah Hotel, you need to turn right and follow the road up. After a few minutes, you will see a big square with a view of Mount Bromo. You can walk a bit further, taking the path to the left, in a direction to the grassy hill, where you can have an even better view. It can also be a good Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint, but I expect it to be crowded as there is another hotel just next to it.

  • Cemoro Lawang is the town at the base of Mount Bromo.
  • Mount Bromo entrance fee is 220,000 IDR on weekdays, and 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays for foreigners, but it’s often not collected in the afternoon and the gate is located far from the route described above.
  • There are several hills on every side of Cemoro Lawang town, good to watch the Bromo sunrise. Don’t go where everyone else goes.
  • Stay in the hotel which is located close to the route for the Mount Bromo hike and the sunrise path. I can recommend a budget option Wisma Yog or mid-range Cemara Indah Hotel.
  • Consider doing sunset instead of sunrise for a quieter experience.

What to pack for Bromo

Below are the necessary items that you need to have for your Bromo adventure:

  • Sunglasses – the sun is very strong, and the dust can easily get into your eyes. Check UV sunglasses at a good price here.
  • Hiking shoes  or sneakers
  • Suncream  – I use  this suncream as it has great protection and good skin care.
  • Small  day backpack
  • Scarf for the dust
  • Hat to protect from the sun
  • First aid kit  – you never know what might happen (like to me in  Svalbard ), so better be safe
  • Torch for walking for the sunrise – the best is   a head torch , so you can keep your hands free
  • Water – I recommend a reusable water bottle or Filter bottle that you can fill in and save money and reduce plastic usage. If you don’t have access to refilling water, then you can use a  water bottle with a filter like LifeStraw  to have clean water on the go.  Check the price here .
  • Some warm clothes – long-sleeve shirt/jumper/light waterproof jacket (for example packable rain jacket ) in case of rain. It wasn’t cold in Bromo in October, but in the early morning, it can get chilly.
  • Camera – I took pictures in this post with my Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera . I often used the landscape lens – Samyang 12 mm, F 2.0 lens. If you take photos with your phone, consider getting a selfie stick and tripod in one .

Breaking news, panicked hikers scramble down mountain as they try to escape erupting volcano in indonesia.

Panicked hikers were caught on video scrambling down the side of an Indonesian volcano that suddenly erupted in front of them, sending a plume of ash thousands of feet into the air.

The stunning footage — captured by a government drone earlier this month — shows a group of about a dozen hikers cresting the rim of Mount Dukono when the mammoth cloud of gas and ash rolls toward them with hair-raising speed.

They quickly start rappelling down the side of the steep cone, dropping quickly in a mad dash for their lives.

Miraculously, everyone survived the harrowing adventure, according to the Telegraph.

But it could have been much worse.

As it turns out, the group disregarded a ban on entering a particularly dangerous zone on the mountainous, sparsely-populated island of Halmahera, the outlet said.

Indonesia’s national disaster agency had warned people not to climb Dukono, which has been erupting continuously since the 1930s, because of increased volcanic activity.

“The general public is advised not to climb or visit Mount Dukono as volcanic activity is still high at the moment,” said Priatin Hadi Wijaya, the head of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, before adding that authorities banned people from coming within about 2 miles of the crater.

The climbers went anyway — and the mountain repaid their curiosity in kind.

Indonesia, which sits along the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” is a hotbed of volcanic activity and has about 120 active volcanoes.
