How to make the most of your gameday experience at Notre Dame

There’s quite a bit to do, but most of it is right there on campus

stadium tours at notre dame

So you’ve made the correct decision in attending a game at Notre Dame during the college football season. Good for you — I doubt you’ll be disappointed. But how can you make the most out of the experience? There is so much that goes on during Notre Dame Football gamedays, it’s impossible to do everything without making it some type of race rather than a pilgrimage of enjoyment.

AN OVERNIGHT TREAT

While getting into South Bend on Friday isn’t a requirement of a fantastic football weekend, it is something I highly recommend — even if that means a hotel outside of town. Being there on Friday means you’ll be able to attend the Friday pep rally on campus and the Midnight Drummer’s Circle (in front of the Golden Dome) to really get in the mood for some college football.

WHERE TO EAT?

South Bend was rated as one of the best cities in the country for pizza, and it’s easy to agree with that claim after years of sampling the pies in town. While everyone has their own set of personal pizza rankings, I’d have to go with 1. Rocco’s 2. Barnaby’s and 3. Bruno’s.

If pizza isn’t your thing (are you even human?) there are plenty of other options around town — which include a very healthy dose of Irish pubs such as C.J.’s, Corby’s, O’Rourke’s, Brothers, Fiddler’s Hearth, and more. Maybe you’re ready to lick the pole and be a part of history over at the Linebacker Lounger — one of the most iconic bars around campus.

One of my favorite places is in Granger at Villa Macri. It’s an enormous Italian restaurant, deli, and sports bar with fantastic food and again... plenty of space to plop down to enjoy some food, drink, and more football.

When you’re on campus for gameday, the Eddy Street Commons has plenty of spots to fill your stomach and wet your mouth, but there are also some great options on campus. Dorms are out on the lawn grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, but the best option is probably over on the South Quad — that’s where the Knights of Columbus sell their famous steak sandwiches.

WHAT TO SEE?

Again... there is almost more to see than what you can comfortably accomplish before the game, but here’s a solid rundown of what to see on campus:

  • Touchdown Jesus.
  • The National Championship coach statues are located at gates around the stadium.
  • Moose Krause’s bench.
  • Fair Catch Corby statue.
  • We’re Number One Moses statue.
  • The Log Chapel.
  • The Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
  • The Grotto.
  • The Bookstore.
  • Knute Rockne’s grave.

Besides locations and monuments, there is the player walk from the Basilica to Notre Dame Stadium, Trumpets Under the Dome, and the Notre Dame marching band as they march into the stadium to begin game events. From time to time you’ll see the bagpipe band marching through campus, and if you don’t see them, you’ll definitely hear the pipes from all over.

ABOUT SOUTH BEND...

There’s a big difference between South Bend and the Notre Dame campus. South Bend is a major city in Indiana and is mostly a typical blue-collar midwestern town. It’s not exactly the college town some might imagine when they see images of Notre Dame’s campus.

As far as your visit is concerned, almost everything you need (and likely want) is right there on campus or just off campus. Obviously, if you are staying at a hotel in South Bend, you’ll have to venture more around the city. South Bend is a fairly easy city to navigate and Mishawaka and Granger are lovely residential areas to the east and north of South Bend.

Looking for Something?

Tailgate your way: plan your notre dame pre-game.

Whether you’re planning your first game day or a gameday guru, this guide is your one-stop shop to help you plan a trip to South Bend packed with treasured memories. For a complete listing of gameday events on and near campus, visit Experience Notre Dame .

How Can I Get Tickets to the Game?

Securing your tickets to a Notre Dame football game is one of the most important steps in planning your game day experience. Here’s how to make sure you have a seat in the stadium:

Official Notre Dame Athletic Website

The best place to purchase tickets for Notre Dame football games is directly through the official Notre Dame Athletics website . This ensures you purchase authentic tickets at face value and choose from the best available seating options.

Second-Hand Market Options

Notre Dame football home games are incredibly popular, and tickets often sell out quickly—especially for marquee matchups. If tickets are sold out for a particular game, you can explore the secondary market. Trusted platforms like SeatGeek, StubHub, and Gameday Tickets offer a wide selection of tickets from other fans. Keep in mind that prices on these platforms can vary based on demand, so it is wise to shop around and compare options. If you have a larger group and want a white glove-sourcing solution, check out  Gameday Your Way .

Where Should I park?

Choosing a parking lot that best suits your needs is crucial for you to maximize your gameday experience. From spots that are within walking distance from the stadium to spaces in the heart of the tailgating action, South Bend offers plenty of options for fans attending a Notre Dame Football Game.

Pay-to-Park Lots (typically available for purchase on game days)

These lots are further away from the stadium and open at 8:00 a.m. We strongly recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. General lots are priced at $40-50 per vehicle per game and include Blue Lot (White North), Burke North Lot and Burke South Lot. Complimentary shuttles are available to transport visitors from the parking lots to the game. To view details and pricing, visit  fightingirish.com.

Reserved Lots (Usually sold out/only available on reseller websites)

These lots are the most popular, and passes are usually not released to the public for purchase. Trusted platforms like SeatGeek, StubHub, and Gameday Tickets offer a wide selection of passes being sold from other fans. The list below is ranked in order of highest demand and cost:

Stadium Lot is a great choice, as it’s the closest lot to the stadium. This means the party here goes on longer than anywhere else, as it’s such a short walk to your seats.

Joyce Lot is another great option, one of the most popular for tailgating and always boasting a good atmosphere. It's directly next to the Stadium Lot.

North Lot is a popular option for longtime fans and university alumni, as campus landmarks surround it. It’s generally a bit more peaceful than other lots, making it a good option for families.

Bookstore Lot is another family-friendly option near the Eck Visitors Center and Notre Dame Avenue.

White Field is a budget-friendly pick. It’s a bit further from the stadium but there’s a free shuttle and plenty of space compared to some of the more compact lots closer to the stadium.

Want Something All Inclusive?

If you don't want the hassle of planning everything yourself, check out parking and tailgating solutions offered by  Gameday Your Way .

Where Can I tailgate before the Notre Dame Game?

Host Your Own Tailgate

If it’s your first time tailgating, then you may be unsure about what to bring or how it all works. Your tailgating essentials include a portable grill for cooking and a cooler with ice. You will also want some folding chairs and a fold-down table. A tent or canopy will offer shade and rain protection too. Finally, bring your own trash bags. You want to leave your lot as you found it, to protect the environment and the health and well-being of other fans and stadium crew.

To eat, we recommend simple food that you can chuck on the grill, like burgers and hotdogs. Bring plenty of snacks that can be kept at room temperature like chips, and maybe some fresh fruit. There are water points throughout the campus, but these may be a bit of a walk, so you may want to bring your own. And whatever you do, don’t forget the beer!

If you don’t have all the equipment you need or don’t have the space to store it, you can hire providers including  Gameday Your Way , to plan and execute the entire tailgate for you including food and beverage, or just  rent the equipment  for the weekend.

How do I choose a tailgating spot?

You are required to have a parking pass to tailgate in the lots. All the lots open at 8:00 a.m. and in some games there are cars lined up waiting as early as 6:00 a.m. or earlier. The spaces usually first come first serve in most of the lots.

Tips for first-time tailgaters

Tent Size.  You are allowed one tailgate tent that may be set up behind your vehicle, but the tent must be smaller than a 10x10.

Weather. Whatever the forecast says, throw a rain jacket in the car and bring a blanket, just in case.

Socializing.  Tailgating is highly sociable and your neighbors will be happy to chat. Get to know them, share a beer and enjoy the pre-game build-up together.

Don’t overdo it. Game day can be a long day, and it’s important to pace yourself. Drink lots of water, eat some food and save some drinks for later!

Follow the rules.  Prohibited items include charcoal grills, deep fryers, drones, kegs, open flames, fire pits, propane tanks larger than 20 pounds and stakes.

Attend an All-Inclusive Notre Dame Tailgate Party

There’s no better way to dive into the excitement than by joining an all-inclusive tailgate party. This is a great option if you are a solo traveler or with a smaller group. These events offer a stress-free way to enjoy great food, drinks, and entertainment—all without the hassle of setup.

What to Expect

All-inclusive tailgate parties in South Bend typically include:

Food & Drinks. Indulge in tailgate fare and unlimited beverages.

Convenient Setup. Everything from seating to entertainment is provided, so you can focus on having fun.

Prime Location. Enjoy the festivities just a short walk from Notre Dame Stadium.

Custom Experience: Gameday Your Way Tailgate Party

Among the various options, the  Gameday Your Way Tailgate Party  is a great choice for hosts who want to stand out from the crowd AND have someone else handle the details. It offers a premium experience with gourmet food, entertainment, games, and all the comforts you need for an unforgettable, fuss-free solution.

Visiting head coach speaks highly of notre dame stadium, share this article.

Miami of Ohio Redhawks head coach Chuck Martin is looking forward to his team’s visit to Notre Dame Saturday.

Echoing the words of Rudy’s father from the movie “Rudy”, Martin is seeing Notre Dame Stadium as sacred ground.

“My personal opinion, we’re going to the greatest venue on the planet,” Martin said in a press conference. He went on to say he’s been a Notre Dame fan since childhood, when he’d watch the games the day after on replay.

He said when he was growing up, he looked at Notre Dame as “this is the only team that matters on the planet.”

The Fighting Irish will aim to avoid overlooking a Mid-American Conference team at home for the second time this season. Hopefully the Irish learned from the debacle against Northern Illinois. Perhaps, too, the Huskies are better than most observers thought going into the season.

If the Irish play to their standard against the Redhawks, the day should go smoothly. And Martin will be taking it in from the sideline of what he thinks is the best stadium in the world.

Notre Dame Stadium to Host Chelsea FC and Celtic FC International Friendly

Published: March 18, 2024

Author: Fighting Irish

Chelsea v Celtic

SOUTH BEND, IN (March 18, 2024) - The University of Notre Dame will welcome elite international club soccer competition when England’s Chelsea FC and Scotland’s Celtic FC face off on Saturday July 27, 2024, at Notre Dame Stadium.

Tickets for the match will go on sale via Ticketmaster on Wednesday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. local time. Fans can sign up for an exclusive 24-hour presale at  www.FCSeries.com .

“We are thrilled to be able to welcome Chelsea and Celtic to Notre Dame Stadium this summer,” said incoming Notre Dame Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics Pete Bevacqua. “It is special that Celtic chose to play at Notre Dame in their first trip stateside in over a decade and joining six-time English Premiere League champion Chelsea will make for an unbelievable experience. I cannot wait for fans across the World to be able to visit and enjoy Notre Dame and the South Bend community while cheering on their clubs.”

The match returns international soccer to Notre Dame Stadium. In July 2019, Borussia Dortmund defeated Liverpool, 3-2, in front of 40,361 fans.

“We are proud to not only welcome guests from across the country and world to the South BendーElkhart region, but also to give our community a chance to cheer for these historic clubs,” said Notre Dame Executive Vice President Shannon Cullinan. “Events at Notre Dame Stadium have long been a boon to our local economy, and we look forward to another exciting ‘football’ weekend in South Bend.”

"South Bend is a special location for creating a unique event for these world class teams,” said Molly Pendleton, Senior Vice President, Unified Events. “Playing at Notre Dame Stadium with teams like Chelsea FC and Celtic FC will showcase the passion of American soccer fans.”

July 27 will be the second ever meeting between Chelsea and Celtic in America. The Blues won the only previous encounter, 4-2, in Seattle in 2004.

Chelsea, the two-time Champions League and six-time English Premier League champions, will enter the preseason in their second year under manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Blues are the first club to win all four major UEFA club competitions twice (Champions League, Super Cup, Europa League and Cup Winners’ Cup).

“The opportunity to play in front of our fans at the University of Notre Dame is one we are really excited by. This fixture against Celtic provides another fantastic contest during the club’s pre-season tour and will be valuable preparation for our 2024-25 Premier League campaign,” said Chelsea Chief Executive Officer Chris Jurasek.

Celtic Football Club is a Scottish football club with proud Irish links. Today, the club is one of the most famous sporting institutions in the world with a fabled history of sporting achievement. Celtic was the first British Club to win the European Cup (current Champions League) in 1967, the club has achieved a world record eight domestic Trebles, been named Scottish Champions 53 times and achieved cup victories in Scotland on 62 occasions.

Founded in 1888 for charitable purposes, its principal founder was an Irish Catholic Priest named Brother Walfrid. The first aim of the club was to raise funds to provide food for the poor children of the East End of Glasgow, an area of the City with a large Irish community. From humble beginnings, Celtic has developed into one of the world’s great names in world sport, but maintaining its commitment to a strong social dimension, through one of the most successful charitable operations in raising funds and delivering meaningful projects to support people in need.

Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers commented, “Everyone at Celtic is delighted to be visiting the United States again, particularly for such an exciting pre-season program and we are really looking forward to meeting Chelsea at Notre Dame.”

“I know Mauricio well and I look forward to seeing him and his team again in July for what I am sure will be a brilliant occasion between two major European clubs.”

“Pre-season preparation is always an important time and of course Chelsea will present us with a strong and exciting challenge.”

“We are so fortunate to have such a strong support worldwide and particularly right across the U.S. so our visit I am sure will allow our fans a great opportunity to see the team in action and in turn we really look forward to seeing our fans there.”

“To be playing at the famous and iconic University of Notre Dame at such a fantastic venue will be a unique moment for the club and we are sure the home of the “Fighting Irish”, will generate huge support for Celtic and inspire a great sporting occasion.”
