Need to Know

  • Safari Tours
  • Overnight Stays

We ask that you arrive and check in at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of your safari. This additional time allows for restroom use and the tour guide assignment process.

Your Classic Safari includes a two-hour drive in rugged terrain in a rolling, open-air safari vehicle as well as a 45-minute walking portion through our aviary and surrounding areas. Safari adventures may not recommended for pregnant women.

Children need to be 4 years or older to participate in the driving portion of an African Safari Tour.

Children under the age of eighteen (18) must be accompanied by an adult.

You must be at least 45 inches tall to ride on the top seat.

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes as we have pathways made of dirt and gravel. Depending on the weather a jacket and layering may be advised.

Please feel free to bring your camera to take as many pictures as you would like.

We advise that you bring a bottle of water on the tour.

Safari West is a pet-free property, and that includes your vehicle! We are unable to accommodate guests who bring pets or companion animals. If a guest does bring a pet or companion animal, we require them to reschedule their visit to a future date.

Gratuity and Tipping Policy

If you enjoyed your safari, feel free to tip your guide. They work hard and appreciate the recognition.

Please Note : If you reserved a private vehicle or made a group reservation for 10 or more, there will be a service charge that goes directly to your guide.

If you’ve ever dreamt of spending the night on the African plain, then you’ll love camping at Safari West. Our luxury tents are sourced from Lobatse, Botswana. The heavy-duty canvas walls and mesh windows lend a rustic air to an otherwise lavish experience. Our luxury safari tents have a variety of bedding arrangements from a single king to side-by-side doubles to a double bunks arrangement that’s spectacular for families. Whatever your particular arrangement, we’ve got a tent for you. If any member of your party has mobility needs, consider requesting one of our accessible tents.

Each tent sits atop a high wooden platform with private decks providing panoramic views of the property. Inside the tents, polished copper basins shine in the en suite bathrooms which also sport hot showers and real toilets. Polished hardwood flooring sets off the hand-hewn furniture, and ultra-plush linens adorn the comfortable beds. Each tent is even wired for electricity allowing ceiling fans in summer, heating in winter, and numerous outlets to meet all your charging needs.

This is a safari tent camp…it works differently than your normal hotel. We expect questions when you arrive, and the Safari West staff is here to help make your stay enjoyable and memorable.

Weather and temperature considerations:

The tents do not have a/c during the hotter summer months but have a ceiling fan. They can get to be quite cold, especially at night and during colder months. The right clothes make all the difference, we recommend bringing warm clothes for sleeping. Adult beds have electric blankets, children’s roll away and cots do not. Please bring WARM clothes for the night, even the summer months can get cold at night, and slippers for trips to the open-air bathrooms. Please consider showering the evening of your stay as early morning temperatures are at their lowest.

Noise considerations:

Please understand that the walls are made of canvas and offer no noise protection. Whatever is said can be heard. Please respect your neighbors.

Staying at Safari West is an authentic safari-style tent camping experience. During the evening, night, or early morning hours, you are likely to hear the incredible sounds of cranes calling, ostriches booming, or lemurs chattering. Lying in bed and listening to this wild symphony is an experience in itself!

Add Lunch and or Dinner to your visit! (Currently, due to limited availability, reservations must be secured by 48 hours prior to arrival).

Dine out… way out!  We would like to mention our on-site restaurant, the Savannah Café, offers lunches and dinners by advanced reservation. The cost of lunch is $19 per adult and $13 per child (4-12 years old). Dinner is $35 per adult and $17 per child (4-12 years old). For a quick refueling before or after your tour, check out the deli delights at Delilah’s Deli. Fine wine and brews are available along with soft drinks and juice at our restaurant and snack bar.

If you would like to make reservations for either lunch or dinner, please call us within 48 hours of arrival, you may also book online. Great way to extend your visit and meet new friends!

Please note – outside food/picnic baskets are not permitted on the grounds.

However, service animals are restricted in all areas where our exotic collection is not separated from our guests by a physical barrier. For any disabled guests requiring a service animal to travel, please call our main office at (707) 579-2551 to make arrangements during your visit. Please do call at least 72 hours in advance! Our property does need to plan ahead for service animals, and we want you to have a seamless arrival. Picture the Serengeti in the heart of wine country and you'll start to imagine what Safari West looks like. This African-inspired safari and nature preserve contains nearly 1,000 exotic animals, such as zebras, giraffes and cheetahs, spread across 400 acres. When you're not exploring the grounds on your own two feet or in an open-air safari vehicle, spend the night gazing up at the stars in one of the preserve's luxury tents (more like glamping than camping).

Visitors say Safari West is a great way to experience the wildlife and terrain native to Africa without ever leaving the United States. Along with the amazing animals and beautiful landscape, travelers also praise the knowledgeable and friendly staff.

African Safari Tour tickets, which include a three-hour walking or riding tour of the preserve, start at $110 per adult on the weekdays and $120 per adult on the weekends – though prices vary seasonally. Plan to book your tickets in advance on Safari West's website . Only kids ages 4 and older can participate for safety reasons.

During peak season (April through August) the preserve offers safaris from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; fewer safaris are offered the rest of the year. You'll find Safari West in Santa Rosa , about 30 miles north of Sonoma.

#1 Sonoma Plaza

U.S. News Insider Tip: Many hotels outside of downtown Sonoma, such as the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa , offer a free shuttle right into the Plaza. This way, you can skip both driving after wine and ordering an Uber home. – Amelia Edelman

Centered in the heart of town, historic Sonoma Plaza is a must-see. Once a Mexican military station and a Spanish mission village, the 8.5-acre park is now lined with more than 100 shops, dozens of eateries and more than 20 tasting rooms. What's more, it was dedicated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Recent visitors highly recommended spending some time here window shopping, wine tasting, dining and even letting the kids run around the on-site playgrounds. Reviewers say the plaza's atmosphere is both charming and family-friendly, and they suggest visiting on a Tuesday evening to take advantage of the weekly farmers market.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk – the view from above

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Cities , Travel

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a city with a population of about 200 thousand people located in the southeastern part of Sakhalin Island in the Far East of Russia , the capital of Sakhalin Oblast .

It is the sixth largest city in the Russian Far East, in which Russian and Japanese cultures are closely intertwined. Here you can often see old Japanese buildings and monuments. The distance from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Moscow , if flying by plane, is 6,640 km and 9,280 km (by car). Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

The climate in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is quite mild, there are no severe frosts in winter, and heat in summer. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of about minus 12 degrees Celsius. The warmest month is August (plus 17 degrees Celsius). Clear and dry weather sets in early September – the best time to visit Sakhalin.
