Tour Details
Rockabilly master Brian Setzer has changed it up over the years — first with his massive Stray Cats success the 1980s, which led to 13 solo albums over the years and 11 albums from his swing revival band the Brian Setzer Orchestra. In his various Rockabilly Riot band formations, it’s back to a trio on this tour where we caught a great rockin’ set from the band and spoke with FOH engineer Gary Hartung about mixing the tour… Clair Global’s Sound Image provides the console, IEM rack, mics, cabling, etc. “I used P.A. du jour,” Hartung says. “Brian and the band are consummate pros. He doesn’t soundcheck, nor does the band. He brings a lot of energy to the show, and he’ll hit the stage a couple minutes before showtime because he’s so fired up and ready to go.”
“I’m using the Yamaha QL-5 console at FOH for Brian’s tour, which I’ve used on other tours as well, such as for Ann Wilson (Heart) for years. I also use a CL-5 doing both FOH and Monitors on Don Felder (Eagles) tour and I find the Yamaha format is easy to navigate doing both. It comes down to muscle memory when doing both jobs from one desk. I like the ability to multitrack record off the Dante network and the Yamaha MyLake8 card gives me 8 channels of Lake EQ without having an external Lake processor. The console is compact, reliable, sounds great and easy to navigate. I have about 18 inputs. For this tour it’s a straight-ahead three-piece rockabilly band. I’ve mixed the Brian Setzer Orchestra for years which is a 19-piece rock and roll big band, so this is very much stripped down.”
Setzer started using JH 13 v.2 IEM’s last fall for the first time and is adjusting nicely, says Hartung. “We felt it was essential to lower the overall stage volume, so we ditched the wedges and sidefills. He only gets his vocal and a little bit of the background vocals in his mix, so we decided to try combining both FOH and Monitor positions. It’s worked great. Once we dialed in things in the first soundcheck, I didn’t have to do much adjusting during the shows for the tour. It’s always dicey though being 100 feet away and not being on stage. You really cross your fingers that nothing goes haywire during the show. You sort of feel like you’re on an island.”
Thankfully all has been fine, notes Hartung. “We did put the guitar and drum techs on the Yamaha monitor mix app in case they needed to make any adjustments during the show. I’m very familiar with the app having used it on other tours and It works great. Another reason I chose the QL-5 console.”
Hartung says he’s not that big on plugins. “I say pick a console that sounds good and spend a good amount of time tuning the PA. Then your inputs fall into place. I also don’t use a lot of compression. I do what I call natural compression. If an input is too loud, turn it down, too soft, turn it up… simple. I like subtle fader moves and really tuning in to how a band is playing.”
Clair Global’s Sound Image provides the console, IEM rack, mics, cabling, etc. “I used P.A. du jour, as we like to say. Brian and the band are consummate pros. He doesn’t soundcheck, nor does the band. He brings a lot of energy to the show, and he’ll hit the stage a couple minutes before showtime because he’s so fired up and ready to go. We love that about him. Many of the crew have been around for a long time (such as Production Manager Michael Richter), and we all welcome any opportunity to do Brian’s tours. We’re also very close and consider it a family. We have a lot of fun on both show days and days off. I think that’s really important!”

Their setlists will include such favorites as “Stray Cat Strut,” “Rock This Town,” “Runaway Boys,” “(She’s) Sexy + 17,” “I Won’t Stand in Your Way” and more.
The Stray Cats were formed by Setzer, Rocker and Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, NY, in 1979. The trio shared a love for Rockabilly music. They saw a pompadoured kid on the cover of U.K. magazine NME in the summer of 1980 and hopped a plane to London where a rockabilly revival movement was just beginning to emerge.
Said Setzer, in the March 26 tour announcement, “I’ve always said that we all grew up in the same neighborhood, so there’s an instant feeling between us when we play. It allows us to be confident and spontaneous. Man, that’s priceless.”
“With just a string bass, a guitar and a drum, we have always had less instruments and gear, but more rumble, more twang, more shake, and more bang than anyone else,” said Rocker. “Now’s the right time to bring it back!”
Phantom added: “I’m thrilled to be doing shows in 2024 with Stray Cats in the U.S.A.! Playing drums with Brian and Lee in our rockabilly band is the best possible way to spend a summer!”

Event Details
Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner Brian Setzer will embark on a 12-date fall tour coinciding with a new solo album due in the upcoming months via Surfdog Records. Marking his first live shows in over four years, the “ROCKABILLY RIOT” tour will play the Brown County Music Center on Thursday, October 5, 2023.
For these dates, SETZER will be joined by, in his words, an “international rockabilly band, Chris D’Rozario from Melbourne, Australia and Juan Laurios from Mexico City.”
The shows will be highlighted by SETZER’s guitar assault and rockin’ style on the most electrifying songs from his 40-year career as a solo artist, leader of The Brian Setzer Orchestra and as a Stray Cat. He adds, “I think fans can always expect that I’m going to play the hits. I also want to play some solo guitar and little things I’ve worked out by myself. I’ve never really gotten to do that, so it's going to be something new.”
His set lists will include “some of the favorite covers I’m doing now. I haven’t recorded it, but I really like playing my version of ‘Georgia On My Mind.’ And then with the band, I want to play a new song ‘Girl On The Billboard’ because it tells a fun story.”
These shows come as BRIAN is preparing to release a new solo album due in the fall, his first since 2021’s GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE. Additional details about the forthcoming album will be announced in the coming weeks.
ABOUT BRIAN SETZER:
Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner BRIAN SETZER has achieved one career milestone after another. He’s sold millions of albums and is a "Musician's Musician" credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles. Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin’ style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process. Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. SETZER is also, fittingly, in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. On the live front, Setzer has headlined venues and festivals worldwide, including a 1983 headlining slot on the iconic US Festival in California, The Playboy Jazz Festival, a three-night, sold-out headlining run at the Hollywood Bowl with the 98-piece Philharmonic Orchestra, Woodstock ’99, and performing in front of more than 150,000 people as headliner of the Montreal Jazz Festival. His reach also includes films and TV, where his roles include portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran in the 1987 film, La Bamba, Fox’s “Beverly Hills 90210,” among many others, and he is one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons” in 2002. That same year, SETZER was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. SETZER had the honor of being invited in 2006 to perform at the White House for the President of the United States. Also in 2006, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame with the Stray Cats. In 2014, SETZER received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

I’ve never really gotten to do that, so it’s going to be something new.”
His setlists will include “some of the favorite covers I’m doing now. I haven’t recorded it, but I really like playing my version of ‘Georgia On My Mind.’ And then with the band, I want to play a new song ‘Girl On The Billboard’ because it tells a fun story.”
These shows come as BRIAN is preparing to release a new solo album due in the fall, his first since 2021’s GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE . Additional details about the forthcoming album will be announced in the coming weeks.
