Amon Amarth is a Swedish based death metal act from the city Tumba. The group plays a blend of black metal that emphasizes melody and captures themes of mythology and Viking history. The group’s core line up consists Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Söderberg, and Fredrik Andersson.

Stemming from the demise of the grindcore band Scum, Amon Amarth formed in 1992, adopting their name from a reference to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional setting, Middle-earth. Amon Amarth abandoned the hardcore punk sound of Scum, dropping their previous spastic tendencies and experimenting with dark dream like soundscapes driven by the traditional brooding structure of contemporaries like In Flames,Six Feet Under, and At the Gates.

Amon Amarth put out their first demo “Thor Arise” in 1993 following shortly after the release of Scum’s 1991 demo and their subsequent reformulation. “Thor Arise” was very rough and disjointed; nevertheless, it showed great potential and stimulated a strong cult following in certain metal subsects.

Just a year later the band put out their second demo “Arrival of the Fimbul Winter”. This recording saw a limited run of 1000 copies. The band signed on to Pulverised Records and released their first EP “Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds” in 1996. Their studio debut LP “Once Sent from the Golden Hall” followed 2 years later and was released through the label Metal Blade. This album was herald among critics and was essential in exposing the band to an international audience. After this release they were making stops in Canada, the US, and various festivals in addition to their standard rounds at local venues.

The band experienced several lineup changes in 1998, with Johan Soderberg replacing Anders Hansson and Martin Lopez going on to join Opeth. Once the band settled into their new formation they recorded and released their sophomore effort “The Avenger”. The group returned to the studios to create their most aggressive album to date, aptly titled “The Crusher”, which saw a release in mid 2001.The band scheduled an extensive tour in tandem with this release, but had to push back their US wing of the tour until 2002. By this time they issued their 4th album “Versus the World”. This album was considered to be the group’s most somber and emotionally dark album. It also won widespread critical praise, ranking number 413 in Rock Hard magazine’s book of “The 500 Greatest Rock Metal Albums of All Time”.

The band started a trend of releasing an album every 2 years. They succeeded their 2004 Spring tour with the release of “Fate of Norns” and in 2006 came out with their critical and commercially viable album “With Oden on Our Side”. The group returned to the studios to record “Twilight of the Thunder Gods” after the completion of their first ever Australian and New Zealand tour.

“Twilight of the Thunder Gods” featured members of Entombed, Children of Bodom, and Apocalyptica as well as an 8 page accompanying comic strip. Much of the group’ status within the metal community as well as in popular music can be attributed to this album. It rose to No. 50 on the US charts, No. 6 in Germany, No. 10 in Finland, and No.11 in their homeland.

Their next album “Surtur Rising” came out 3 years later and acted as a platform for a 4 month world tour alongside Ensiferum and Children of Bodom. The group’s 9th studio album “Deceiver of the Gods” came out in 2013 and did reasonably well on the charts in Canada and drew comparisons to the works of Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest.

Live reviews

The concert was epic. I wasn't too familiar with Skeletonwitch but they didn't disappoint. Beyond the Permafrost were awesome. They now have a new fan. Next was Sabaton. Chuck Liddell (Lead Singer Joakim) owned it. I'm a huge fan of the band and their stories of epic battles throughout history. To Hell and Back was my favorite song of the night. One of the people I met never heard Sabaton before and was a fan before the end of the set. One of the best parts of the show was at the end. Joakim brought a 6 year old named Steven on stage and gave him his trademark mirrored aviator sunglasses. He then let him stay on stage and rock out with the band. It was Stevens first metal concert. Mad respect for that. The venue was amazing. The Riverside Municipal Auditorium is one of the coolest venues I've been in. The sound is amazing and I will definitely be attending concerts there again.

And finally the Almighty AMON AMARTH. Nothing else can be said except they blew the walls down. Johan is the definition of the great front man. He had the crowd in his hands from the moment he hit the stage. 90 minutes of pure balls out Viking Death Metal. Can't wait to see these bands again.

Amon Amarth is an amazing Norse viking metal band who touts it all the time. They sport the look, dress the stage to feel like you are at or watching a Norse Viking Ship.

Last concert I went to Amon Amarth had the stage filled up with a wooden dragon ship which the drummer played on and was high above everyone while singers and guitarist were on mini dragon viking ships where they could get on and off and run around the stage.

The growling they do is clear and percise, the guitars and riffs are fantastic with the power drums they sport. They get the crowd amped with the music, solos, drum solos and shouting between songs. They talk the crowd up and talk about Norse lore while waiting. They bring a great show and people love it, once in the while the get the crowd to mosh, but it is not really their thing.

It was only a 45min set, going on after Cannibal Corpse, but before Lamb of God and Slayer. It was more of a "modern hits era" setlist but with only 45min to work with, I think that was a great idea to build fans. They're headlining their tour this fall so they'll get to max out in the States soon enough. I don't think the new cd has anything as grand in feel as The Way of Vikings but I really can't wait to hear more of the new material this fall. Raven's Flight and Crack the Sky were known going into the show but everyone else should have a chance at the full cd since this was the only performance before the official release of Berserker. Fafner's Gold, Shield Wall, and Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor will be welcome additions when they have time to do them.

I'll raise my horn to Amon Amarth !!!

It was amazing!!

Thanks to Songkick I have had one of the greatest experiences in my life.

The performance as well as the special effects were just spectacular.

Moreover, you could clearly see how the band really enjoys putting up a concert and be one with the fans. Not going to lie, I remained from start to finish with a gigantic smile on my face and jumping all around for the fact that having had the opportunity to go to Barcelona to listen to such great band had me so hyped I even tear up. I felt the powerfulness of their music right on my chest, they left me completely speachless!

I really hope to see Amon Amarth on live concert again. <3

The show was INCREDIBLE! The venue looked a little outdated on the outside, but once you were inside, the venue venue had venue had so much space! This was my second time seeing Amon Amarth, and it certainly isn't my last! The band did great, and Goatwhore, the opening band, was also incredible. Venue was very well organized and their merch table was conveniently placed with plenty of room to access. Only thing that bummed me out a little about the venue was that I had to take off some of my apparel that I've been able to wear to every other venue I've been to, but I guess every place has their own differences. Still an amazing show!

Of the hundreds of concerts I've been to, Amon Amarth is one of the top five I've ever seen. They were absolutely phenomenal. The energy was amazing, the set list was great, the crowd was awesome, the opening acts (who I wasn't very familiar with) were awesome. The entire show was just unforgettable. It was my first time at the House of Blues Cleveland and I loved the place. They have one of the very best sound systems I've heard. I'm from Columbus and I'll definitely be returning to the venue as soon as possible.

One of the best gigs I have ever been to. Everything is perfect. The bands who played along with Amon Amarth were absolutely stunning. I would like to point out a few points which disappointed me a bit. Skeletonwithc's vocal was not there, so all they played were instrumental, which were pretty good too. And Amon Amarth did not have their Viking Ship on the stage which they were having in other concerts in this tour. This is really frustrating. Except these, everything was great. I had a good time.

Saw these guys (4/26/2016) In a tiny venue in Rochester with mediocre sound... that being said, one of the best and most fun shows Ive been to in a very long time... Amon Amarth seemed like they enjoyed the croup and were happy to be there. Even with such a small venue they sounded great and played a nice mix of songs from their various albums.

I wish the would have chosen to play in Niagara Falls, I think that would have been a much better venue and would have surpassed this show.

Awesome show. Sound was great, stage presence was great. Without the stage gimmicks it would have been perfectly good but their stage show was a lot of fun too.

I did not see the opener but I did see all of Entombed A.D. set and it was solid as well (I had listened to their albums though so I knew the songs).

We had a friend who was not a metal fan and even he had a good time, its a good show for veterans and newcomers both.

Over 40 Tampa Bay concerts to check out in 2024

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

If your New Year’s resolution is to go to more local concerts in 2024, you’re in luck. The first half of next year is already stacked with plenty of fun options for fans of nearly every genre.

Now is finally your chance to witness Bad Bunny and Drake without hauling to Miami. Followers who missed Morgan Wallen and Willie Nelson in 2023 will get a second chance to watch their faves. There are rising stars like Tampa R&B singer Destin Conrad, and power pairings including Billy Joel and Sting. Plus an array of anniversary tours and retrospectives from artists like Madonna, who will finally bring her postponed “Celebration Tour” to town.

Below are our recommendations for over 40 concerts and festivals in the new year. Have another gig you’re excited about? Email [email protected] to let us know.

Country stars

Willie Nelson and Family: If you missed the Red Headed Stranger during his Outlaw Music Festival this fall , catch him at the Sound at Coachman Park on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Tim McGraw: The singer, now on his 17th studio album, is bringing the “Standing Room Only Tour” to Tampa on Friday, March 15. Carly Pearce opens the Amalie Arena concert.

Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band: The “Sun Goes Down Tour” comes to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Saturday, April 20.

Kane Brown: The vocalist has been called “the future of country music” by Billboard. See him with Tyler Hubbard and Parmalee on Friday, May 31, or Saturday, June 1, at Amalie Arena.

Morgan Wallen: One of country’s highest-streamed crooners is bringing his “One Night at a Time World Tour” to Raymond James Stadium for, well, two nights: Thursday, July 11, and Friday, July 12.

Zach Bryan: Jason Isbell opens “The Quittin Time Tour” on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Raymond James Stadium.

Latin legends

Pitbull, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias: Dale! Three Latin legends team up for one explosive show on Sunday, March 10, at Amalie Arena.

Bad Bunny: The Puerto Rican superstar, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, will bring his irresistible blend of Latin trap and reggaeton to six Florida stops next year. Catch his “Most Wanted Tour” on Tuesday, May 21, at Amalie Arena.

Pepe Aguilar: The “Jaripeo Hasta Los Huesos Tour” pays tribute to the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. Sunday, June 30, at Amalie Arena.

Rock and roll

Elvis Costello & the Imposters: Costello, a proud member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, brings his “7-0-7 Tour” to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Charlie Sexton opens the show on Thursday, Jan. 11.

Billy Joel and Sting: While these two icons have both graced Tampa stages over the years, their Saturday, Feb. 24, show will mark the first time they’ve double-headlined together. This pairing is happening for one night only at Raymond James Stadium.

Sammy Hagar: The Red Rocker — and special guest Loverboy — will perform during the “Best of All Worlds Tour” on Sunday, July 14, at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa.

Styx and Foreigner: Foreigner already embarked on a farewell run in 2023, but a tour with Styx seems like a good reason to return to Tampa. Catch the “Renegades & Juke Box Heroes Tour” on Saturday, July 20, at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre.

Bowling for Soup: The Texas pop-punkers celebrate 30 years in 2024. See them in St. Petersburg with Lit on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Jannus Live.

Amon Amarth: “Heed our warning: We are gearing up for our biggest and most epic raid in North American history,” the Viking metal band posted to announce their upcoming tour. Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Frozen Soul open the “Metal Crushes All Tour” on Saturday, May 18, at the Yuengling Center.

Melanie Martinez: Beach Bunny and Sofia Isella open “The Trilogy Tour” on Tuesday, June 18, at Amalie Arena.

Alanis Morissette: The Canadian-American singer is bringing a dose of ‘90s alt-rock nostalgia to MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre on Wednesday, June 19. “You Oughta Know” that Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will be opening, along with Morgan Wade.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Catch Flea and friends on the “Unlimited Love Tour,” featuring special guests Ice Cube (yes, you read that right) and indie rockers IRONTOM, on Friday, June 21, at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre.

Singer-songwriters

Lucinda Williams: After recovering from a stroke in 2020, the Grammy-winning songwriter will return to Clearwater next year. The “Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets: The Story of a Life in Songs Tour” promises a multimedia experience including personal anecdotes. Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Nancy and David Bilheimer Capitol Theatre.

Hozier: The Irish singer-songwriter, whose songs bounce somewhere between blues, soul gospel, R&B and folk, has become something of a mystical character. He’ll take Tampa to church on Saturday, May 11, at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre.

Madison Beer: The singer’s “Spinnin Tour” reaches St. Petersburg on Wednesday, May 22, at Jannus Live. Upsahl opens.

Hip-hop and R&B

MLK Bash: Jeezy, Boosie, Real Boston Richey and other guests take over Tampa on Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Yuengling Center.

Playboi Carti: The rapper’s headlining tour features Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely and Homixide Gang as openers. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Amalie Arena.

Tinashe: The “2 On” will share her sultry sound during the “BB/NG3L Tour” on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Ritz Ybor in Tampa.

Drake and J. Cole: Champagne Papi is bringing his mouthful of a tour (“It’s All a Blur Tour — Big as the What?”) to Amalie Arena. It’s his first Tampa stop since 2016, and fellow rapper and producer J. Cole also hasn’t played here for a while. They’ll make up for it with two performances: Friday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 3, at Amalie.

Destin Conrad: The 23-year-old Tampa native and Kehlani collaborator is embarking on his first headlining trek in early 2024. Catch this local rising R&B singer on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Jannus Live.

Burna Boy: The self-described Afro-fusion artist incorporates R&B, reggae, hip-hop and dancehall into his hits. Find him on Monday, March 11, at Amalie Arena.

Anniversary tours and retrospectives

Kansas: The band is hitting 50 cities to commemorate its 50th anniversary. During the two-hour set, expect to hear some deep cuts. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons: The original Jersey boy reflects on his six-decade career on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Hard Rock Event Center in Tampa.

Paul Anka: Fun fact: Paul Anka is the only artist in history to have a song on the Billboard charts during seven consecutive decades. Take a trip down memory lane during the singer’s “Seven Decades Tour” on Friday, March 8, at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

The Temptations and the Four Tops: Two Motown legends — the former celebrating six decades, the latter seven decades — will perform on Monday, March 11, at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Madonna: 2023 was a tough year for the pop superstar, who had to postpone her “Celebration Tour” due to hospitalization. The Material Girl will finally perform with special guest Bob the Drag Queen on April 4 at Amalie Arena. Expect a retrospective that highlights all of Madonna’s eras.

New Kids on the Block: The “Magic Summer 2024 Tour” will be a reimagining of the band’s 1990 tour of the same name. Paula Abdul and DJ Jazzy Jeff open the show on Wednesday, July 19, at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre.
