16 Best Travel Websites and Tools for Europe 2024 (Planning and Booking)
There are a lot of fantastic travel websites for traveling to Europe. Besides our own little resource, we think you should know about the following websites we actually use ourselves.
This is a site you want to bookmark. Here are all the best sites for travel planning 2024.
These apps and tools will help you find tickets, transportation, rent a car, and all of that sort of nature. Basically, this here is your Swiss-knife of the best websites to travel to Europe.
Top Websites to travel to Europe in 2024
We organized this guide by topic, and the websites in no particular order. Every single one we mentioned is used by us too.
On the menu:
- Get Your Guide
- Discover Cars
- Planning your route
Booking.com
- Airbnb and better Alternatives
Hostelworld
Hostelz.com.
- Google Flights
- Airalo eSim Card
Under One Week in Europe , we share all the destinations we cover and more generic articles as well. We also included a full map with all European cities and countries we cover.
1. Sightseeing Tickets and Tours
There are three websites we highly recommend for getting your sightseeing tickets and tours.
Get Your Guide and Tiqets.com are ticket suppliers. Here you will find all your tickets for the Colosseum in Rome, Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Eiffel Tower in Paris and so on.
Compare both websites. Prices can differ, it depends on the sight really. Here is my review about Get Your Guide .
The Best Tours in Europe
Walks of Italy or Take Walks (it is the same company!) is a small walking tour company offering high-quality walking tours with exceptional guides.
I know, this sounds a bit over the top, maybe?! Yet it is true. We joined their tours in Florence, Venice, Rome, and Athens so far. All their groups are small and they even run some exclusive VIP tours. No kidding! You can enter the Sistine Chapel after hours or get some skip-the-line-tickets for special sights like the Colosseum in Rome.
We absolutely loved it every single time! Here is my review of Take Walks with more details.
2. Car Rental in Europe
Car Rental : Discover Cars
Planning to rent a car in Europe? There are so many options and websites out there. We always start our research at Discover Cars.
It compares all car rental companies and even offers car insurance. This saves you a lot of money as it is much cheaper with them. Read our complete guide and review on Discover Car Hire .
Planning your route : Viamichelin.com
The absolute best website to plan your route and the costs of that trip. It is a very easy website to use. Just add your origin and destination. Via Michelin runs a few routes and gives you the best options.
My favorite part is the calculation of costs, including gas and tolls. Especially in countries like France and Italy, the tolls can up a lot. In countries like Spain, it is often not necessary to take the toll-road, since there is a national street nearby.
3. Travel Insurance
Do you need travel insurance? In case your own health insurance does not cover travel, we really recommend getting one. Please check if you already have your own insurance, though. No need to have 2-3-4 different ones.
Also, very important: make sure your travel insurance covers:
- the countries you will be visiting
- activities you plan to do
- covers other basics you require
The two go-to websites we used both in the past:
Find here a complete review of Safetywing . It is also important to compare Safetywing to HeyMondo. Maybe some of them fits much better for your own needs.
Here is a detailed review of HeyMondo Travel Insurance .
4. Accommodation
- Airbnb.com and better Alternatives to Airbnb
These are my best websites for accommodation in Europe. As a very first step, we recommend checking our Europe itineraries.
We also share our best tips on where to stay in several, major European destinations. These guides are for instance:
- Where to stay in Paris
- Guide to where to stay in Florence
- Places to stay in Vienna
- best places to stay in Venice, Italy
- where to stay in Edinburgh
- Where to stay in Istanbul
- Where to stay in Barcelona
Booking.com usually lists every single type of accommodation from the North to the South. Not sure how booking.com work? Read this review of Booking.com
Vrbo is another home-sharing and rental platform. It is a big competitor of Airbnb, yet not as known.
Here you can find our review of Vrbo .
The prices are competitive, and it has a stronger focus on more unique accommodation near beaches and such. For Europe, Vrbo is a good alternative. Sign up, it is free.
Airbnb (yes, but…!)
On the other hand, Airbnb is obviously famous for its apartments. However, I urge you to check for apartments in Europe with a proper tourist license . There have been cases you people have thrown out of the apartment by police as the host had no actual tourism license.
Furthermore, in many touristic places, Airbnb is not very popular among locals. Personally, we stopped using Airbnb due to the abuse of local markets. It just does not sit right with us (anymore!)
Guide to Alternatives to Airbnb
We wrote up a big, detailed guide on Airbnb competitors and alternative websites you can use. There is many interesting websites you may have never heard of. The range goes from high-end luxury to free stays and camping.
For traveling on a smaller budget, I use Hostelworld .
Here you can find all the hostels in Europe. Some hostels are really low-quality, while others can be surprisingly cool. For backpackers and solo-travelers, Hostelworld is a cool app and website to use.
Last but not the least comes in Hostelz.com .
This website is actually a budget traveler’s best friend. It lists every single hostel in the world, and it compares its prices through Booking.com and Hostelworld.com
You can end up saving 25% less on your accommodation in Europe. Imagine that. Therefore, add Hostelz.com to your favorite travel sites. It is an easy money saver!
- Flights Google
Finding flights can be a big task. When traveling in Europe, I always check these websites. I listed them above.
When taking a flight in Europe, make sure you check the luggage restrictions in size and weight. Especially low-budget airlines charge extra for oversized and overweight luggage.
6. Public Transports (Trains and buses)
My best website for trains in Europe is Omio.com.
You can check train schedules and buses. It is sooooo so easy to use. Love it! The website is relatively new and so powerful. Also, you can buy your train and bus tickets with Omio.com directly as well.
Not a public transport, but a private bus company connecting cities in Europe is Flixbus . It is a great way to travel Europe cheap. Bear in mind, bus trips can be long. Personally, I prefer taking the train.
Read : Flixbus in a review —is it reliable?
7. Other: Visa and Internet
For Visa, we have one trusted source.
1. Sort out your Visa with iVisa.com
Before traveling to Europe, make sure you have the correct visa. Make sure you check the right country and if it is part of the Schengen Area. The UK, for instance, is not part of the Schengen area and requires a different visa than Spain.
We love to use iVisa.com for checking out our visa situation. Just add your citizenship and the country you want to visit. It will give you all options for the visa. It even tells you if you need a visa at all.
Important : Some countries require a valid proof of onward travel. You can use onward ticket as a service here. Check this review of Onward Tickets .
I am adding here a little widget. It is completely free to use. The visa itself usually costs anything from €15.
2. Internet in Europe: eSim Card with Airalo
Are you tired of dealing with the hassle of physical SIM cards while traveling? Imagine a seamless, borderless mobile experience, enabling you to explore Europe without limitations. That’s where Airalo’s revolutionary eSIM card comes into play! With Airalo, you can unlock a world of connectivity, convenience, and cost savings like never before.
Find here our discount code for Airalo .
What exactly is an eSIM card anyway?
Basically, instead of a physical Sim Card to put in your phone, it is a digital that you “ download ” or “ install “.
It’s an electronic SIM that eliminates the need for a physical SIM card. Instead, your smartphone connects directly to the cellular network using a small chip already embedded within it. This means no more fumbling with tiny pieces of plastic or worrying about misplacing your SIM card.
No worries, it is super easy to set up! Airalo has an app and it works just smoothly; no need to be a tech nerd.
Summary: Best travel websites for your Europe travels
Here you go. I will keep this list updated whenever we start using another cool app or website. It is worth it for you to bookmark this exact page.
Over to you:
Do you have any questions? Any websites you are missing for a specific topic? Then please leave us a comment. We are thrilled to help you and to make this article even better for all of us.
Safe travels!

While finding flights are important for your travel plans, we find the usage of car rentals to be essential for the best kind of European travel experience. Europe is quite big, and it’s good to experience on the “ground level”. A rental car ride let’s you experience the wonders of traveling to each of your destinations, not as disconnected places between visits to the airport, but as the conclusions to scenic journeys across the European landscape.

27 of the best places to visit in Europe
Jun 12, 2024 • 12 min read
From sunny Greek Islands - like Amorgos (pictured) - to northerly capitals, here are Europe's best places to visit © imagIN.gr photography / Shutterstock
There is simply no way to tour Europe and not be awestruck by its natural beauty, fascinating history and dazzling artistic and culinary diversity.
Europe’s wealth of attractions is its biggest single draw: Florence’s Renaissance art, Venice’s graceful canals, Paris’ Napoleonic splendor, and the multilayered historical and cultural canvas of London. There’s also a huge diversity of natural scenery: rugged Scottish Highlands with glens and lochs, the flower fields and hilltop villages of Provence, and the Adriatic coastline speckled with thousands of islands. And those are just the highlights.
Some of Europe's most popular spots have also felt the effects of overtourism in recent years, as increasing visitor numbers leave an impact on local populations, services and historic sites. Traveling off-season, supporting local businesses and researching the particulars of the issue in your chosen destination can help offset some of the problems.
But with a little planning and care, you’re in for the journey of a lifetime. Here are 27 of the best places to visit in Europe.
1. London, UK
Truly one of the world’s greatest cities
London is mercurial and endlessly fascinating; you could spend a lifetime getting to know it, then realize it’s gone and changed again. Stretching back from the mighty River Thames, its lush parks and historic districts are crammed with extraordinary sights: royal palaces, towering cathedrals and remarkable museums and galleries. Add the pick of the world’s theaters, restaurants , sports venues and shops, and you’ll be very reluctant to leave.
Planning a visit to London? Time it right with our seasonal guide
2. Venice, Italy
Magical city seemingly floating on water
A sunny winter’s day, with far fewer tourists around, is the perfect time to lap up Venice 's unique and magical atmosphere. Ditch your map and wander the shadowy back lanes of Dorsoduro while imagining secret assignations and whispered conspiracies at every turn. Then visit two of Venice’s top galleries, the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection , which house works by many of the giants of 20th-century art.
Visiting Venice requires a delicate balance. Here are 25 things you need to know before you go
3. Paris, France
Get up close with an architectural icon
Designed as a temporary exhibit for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World Fair), Paris ’ elegant art nouveau Eiffel Tower has become the defining fixture of the skyline. The first floor is home to glitzy glass pavilions housing interactive exhibits; outside, peer down through the glass floor to the ground below. Visit at dusk for the best day and night views of the City of Light and make a toast at the sparkling champagne bar.
4. Rome, Italy
Classical ruins mixed with contemporary style
From the crumbling Colosseum to the ancient Forum and the Via Appia Antica , few sights are more evocative than the ruins of ancient Rome . Two thousand years ago, this city was the center of the greatest empire of the ancient world, where gladiators battled and emperors lived in unimaginable luxury. Nowadays it’s a haunting spot: as you walk the cobbled paths, you can almost sense the ghosts in the air.
Ready to explore Rome? Here are the city's best experiences
5. Berlin, Germany
Catch the ever-changing zeitgeist
Nearly 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it’s hard to believe that this most cosmopolitan of cities once marked the frontier of the Cold War. But reminders of Berlin 's divided past still remain: whether you’re passing the Brandenburg Gate , gazing at graffiti at the East Side Gallery or studying the exhibits at the DDR Museum , it’s an essential part of understanding what makes Germany’s capital. From there, it's time to soak up the city's amazing modern touches, like its iconic club culture , unique independent shops and cool neighborhoods .
6. Dubrovnik, Croatia
A spectacular walled city
Dubrovnik 's main claim to fame are its historic ramparts , considered among the finest in the world, which surround luminous marble streets and finely ornamented buildings. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the walls are still remarkably intact today, and the vistas over the terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic Sea are sublime, especially at dusk, when the fading light makes the hues dramatic and the panoramas unforgettable.

7. Prague, Czechia
An architectural central European jewel
The capital of the Czechia is one of Europe’s most alluring and dynamic places. For all its modern verve, some parts of the city have hardly changed since medieval times – cobbled cul-de-sacs twist through the Old Town, framed by teetering townhouses, baroque buildings and graceful bridges. And if castles are your thing, Prague has an absolute beauty: a 1000-year-old fortress covering around 7 hectares – the world’s largest ancient castle complex.
Make sure to try these quintessential Prague experiences
8. Vienna, Austria
Grand heart of a former empire
The monumentally graceful Hofburg whisks you back to the age of empires in Vienna as you marvel at the treasury’s imperial crowns, the equine ballet of the Spanish Riding School and the chandelier-lit apartments fit for Empress Elisabeth. The palace, a legacy of the 640-year Habsburg era, is rivaled in grandeur only by the 1441-room Schloss Schönbrunn , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the baroque Schloss Belvedere , both set in exquisite gardens.
9. Amsterdam, Netherlands
World Heritage-listed canals and gabled buildings
To say Amsterdammers love the water is an understatement. Stroll next to the canals and check out some of the thousands of houseboats. Or better still, go for a ride. From boat level you’ll see a whole new set of architectural details, such as the ornamentation bedecking the bridges. And when you pass the appealing canalside cafe terraces, mark the location for a later return.
Planning your stay in Amsterdam? Here's our guide to the city's best neighborhoods
10. Budapest, Hungary
Beautiful capital city straddling the Danube
Along both sides of the romantic Danube River, with the Buda Hills to the west and the start of the Great Plain to the east, Budapest is perhaps the most beautiful city in Eastern Europe. Parks brim with attractions, the architecture is second to none, museums are filled with treasures, pleasure boats sail up and down the scenic Danube Bend, Turkish-era thermal baths belch steam and the city's nightlife throbs till dawn most nights.
Before you go to Budapest, read up on our tips from a local writer
11. Barcelona, Spain
See the genius of a visionary architect
Barcelona is famous for its Modernista architecture, much of which was designed by Antoni Gaudí. His masterpiece is the mighty cathedral La Sagrada Família , which remains a work in progress close to a century after its creator’s death. It’s a bizarre combination of crazy and classic: Gothic touches intersect with eccentric experiments and improbable angles. Even half completed, it’s a modern-day wonder.
Get ready to visit Barcelona with these important things to know before you go
12. Lisbon, Portugal
Soulful city armed with Gothic grit
Alfama , with its labyrinthine alleyways, hidden courtyards and curving, shadow-filled lanes, is a magical place to lose all sense of direction and delve into Lisbon 's soul. On the journey, you’ll pass breadbox-sized grocers, brilliantly tiled buildings and views of steeply pitched rooftops leading down to the glittering Tagus. Pause at cozy taverns filled with easygoing chatter, with the scent of chargrilled sardines and the mournful rhythms of fado drifting in the breeze.

13. The Scottish Highlands
Scenic grandeur and echoes of the past
Breathtaking views abound in the Highlands . From the regal charm of Royal Deeside, via the brooding majesty of Glen Coe, to the mysterious waters of sweeping Loch Ness , these are landscapes that inspire awe. The region is scattered with fairy-tale castles and the hiking is suitably glorious. Add the nooks of warm Highland hospitality found in classic rural pubs and romantic hotels, and you have an unforgettable corner of Scotland .

14. Dublin, Ireland
Pints of Guinness and literary connections
Whether you’re wandering around the leafy Georgian terraces of St Stephen’s Green or getting acquainted with the past at Kilmainham Gaol , in Dublin you’re never far from a literary or historic sight. And then there are the city’s pubs : there are few better places to down a pint than Dublin, and you can even make a pilgrimage to the original Guinness brewery . Either way, you’ll surely make a few Irish friends along the way.
See the best of Dublin with our guide to the city's top things to do
15. Florence and Tuscany, Italy
Italy’s most romanticized region
The gently rolling hills of Tuscany , bathed in golden light and dotted with vineyards, sum up Italy’s attractions in a nutshell. Here picture-perfect hilltop towns vie with magnificent scenery and some of Italy’s best food and wine. And there’s Florence , home to what UNESCO describes as "the greatest concentration of universally renowned works of art in the world". It’s a city packed with blockbuster museums, elegant churches and flawless Renaissance streetscapes.
Experience the best of Tuscany with our tips for first-time visitors
16. Ruins of Pompeii, Italy
Ancient city destroyed and preserved by Vesuvius
Frozen in its death throes, the sprawling, time-warped ruins of Pompeii hurtle you 2000 years into the past. Wander through chariot-grooved Roman streets, lavishly frescoed villas and bathhouses, food stores and markets, theaters and even an ancient brothel. Then, in the eerie stillness, with your eye on ominous Mt Vesuvius, ponder the town’s final hours when the skies grew dark and heavy with volcanic ash.
17. Andalucía, Spain
Vibrant cities studded with impressive architecture
Andalucía , ancient al-Andalus, is awash with glorious architecture that dates back to the eight centuries of Moorish rule that ended in 1492. Granada , Córdoba and Seville are the high points of a journey of extraordinary riches. In Granada, the palace complex of the Alhambra , in particular, is close to perfection, and perhaps one of the most impressive works of Islamic art anywhere in the world. Put simply, this is Spain ’s most beautiful monument.
18. Reykjavík, Iceland
The world’s most northerly capital
Most Icelanders live in Reykjavík and even on the shortest visit you’ll be struck by how quirky and creative the population is. Despite being on the northern margin of Europe, the locals have crafted a town packed with captivating art, rich cuisine and an epic music scene. Learn about a history stretching back to the Vikings and use the city as a base for trips to Iceland’s amazing natural wonders.
Here's how to experience the best of Iceland
19. Copenhagen, Denmark
Coolest kid on the Nordic block
Scandinavia is all about pared-back contemporary style – something that the Danish capital has in spades. Home to a thriving design scene, Copenhagen sports Michelin-starred restaurants, hipster cafes and bars, and swoon-worthy boutiques around every corner. Add in top-class museums and galleries and a 1000-year-old harbor with handsome historic architecture and you have the perfect Scandi city.
20. Provence, France
Gallic charm in the south of France
For many people, the pastoral landscapes of Provence are a French fantasy come true. Provence seems to sum up everything enviable about the French lifestyle: fantastic food, hilltop villages, legendary wines, bustling markets and a balmy climate. For decades, it’s been a hot spot for vacationers and second-homers, inspired by the vision of the rustic good life.
Want to see more of France? Here's our guide to the country's best things to do
21. Swiss Alps, Switzerland
Hike, ski and admire these postcard-perfect peaks
The stirring ramparts of the Swiss Alps grace chocolate bar wrappers and evoke stereotypical Heidi scenes, but nothing prepares you for their allure up close. The most famous summit, the Matterhorn, is a mesmerizing peak that looms above the timber-chalet-filled Swiss village of Zermatt . Gaze at it from a tranquil cafe, hike in its shadow along the tangle of alpine paths above town, with cowbells clinking in the distance, or pause on a ski slope and admire its craggy, chiseled outline.
22. Istanbul, Türkiye
Where Europe meets Asia
Serving stints as the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and an ancient crossroads of civilizations, Istanbul is one of the world’s great cities. The historical highlights cluster in Sultanahmet – the Hagia Sophia , Blue Mosque , Topkapı Palace and Grand Bazaar – with the vast Süleymaniye Mosque crowning a hilltop in Eminönü.
Find your way around İstanbul with our neighborhood guide
23. Athens, Greece
Monument-strewn capital of Ancient Greece
Greece has ancient monuments at seemingly every turn, but it’s in Athens where the greatest and most iconic still stand. High on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city, the Acropolis epitomizes the glory of ancient Greece with its graceful Parthenon and 17,000-seat Theatre of Dionysos . Other impressive ruins littering this vibrant city include the Temple of Olympian Zeus and two agoras (marketplaces; one Greek, one Roman) mingling with first-rate museums.
24. Schloss Neuschwanstein, Germany
Fairy-tale castle in a fairy-tale setting
Rising from Alpine foothills in the heart of Bavaria , the 19th-century Schloss Neuschwanstein seems to spring from a child’s imagination of the perfect castle. Its pencil-thin turrets, vertiginous walls and glorious setting make it one of Europe’s most recognizable structures, the prototype for many a Disney castle.
25. Greek Islands, Greece
Whitewashed Mediterranean villages above a turquoise sea
Wherever you land, the Greek Islands grab your attention and don’t let go. While popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos have undoubtedly suffered under the weight of overtourism, there are plenty of others to explore that offer more off-the-beaten path experiences. Take in the lush Ionian Islands or the far-flung Dodecanese — whatever you choose, you're in for an incredible experience.
26. Ring of Kerry, Ireland
A wild and medieval Irish road trip
There’s nowhere quite like Ireland , and the Ring of Kerry , a 179km (111-mile) route through the Iveragh Peninsula, captures all the essential elements of Irish charm on one memorable circuit. Wild and craggy landscapes frame isolated beaches, evocative ruined fortresses stand sentinel over similarly wild Atlantic seas, and windswept mountains watch over villages and islands that could be nowhere else on earth but here.
27. Oslo, Norway
Scandinavia’s gateway to the fjords
Oslo is doing everything it can to claim the prize of Europe’s capital of contemporary style. The Opera House evokes an iceberg in a fjord, public art is a national pastime, and the city’s extraordinary museums span the Viking age to modern Norway. So impressive are the results, that Oslo has become so much more than a mere stopover on the road to the fjords.

A European vacation is a trip many of us dream about. Art, history, culture, architecture, food — there’s something for everyone in Europe. As you can imagine, that all comes with a hefty price tag.
While a trip to Europe can be expensive, there are ways to save money . One of those ways is to purchase a vacation package. When you purchase a package consisting of flights and hotels (and even rail tickets, in the case of Europe) there’s a good chance you’ll save money. While it’s not a guarantee, we’ve found the prices of packages are usually less expensive than purchasing flights and hotels separately.
Since there are lots of places to purchase vacation packages, we wanted to narrow it down for you. These 9 websites all offer European vacation packages and will be a great starting point for planning your vacation.
Eurailing Packages is a little different than the rest of our featured websites because instead of a traditional hotel and airfare package, it offers packages that bundle accommodations and train tickets . This will be handy for vacation packages within Europe, but not necessarily for getting to Europe.
Since train travel is very popular in Europe, we thought this was a great option to include in this list. You can choose from the site’s predesigned packages and current deals, or you can build your custom accommodation and rail package.
Something thing to keep in mind when using this website is that the price includes a hostel, not a hotel . You’ll have the option to pay extra for a hotel when you’re finalizing the details of your trip but you won’t know the specific hotel or room type until after your booking is complete.
Hot Tip: Use points and miles to fly to Europe when your vacation package only includes accommodations and rail tickets.
Grand European Travel might be a good place to search for a European vacation package if you’d like the planning done for you. This website offers lots of predesigned trips but doesn’t have the option to make your own. For someone who doesn’t want to do the legwork of planning a trip, that could be a welcome benefit.
If you decide to book a vacation package through Grand European Travel, keep in mind that solo travelers will default to a shared room. If you’d rather have private accommodations, you can select that during the checkout process for an additional charge.
Another nice thing about booking through Grand European Tours is that in addition to only needing to pay a deposit to reserve your trip, you can get a full refund if you need to cancel within 30 days . You can also change your departure date or destination free of charge until 60 days before your trip.
Costco Travel is another great site that can help you find the perfect European vacation. You can choose a curated package or design your own.
While you have to be a Costco member to purchase Costco Travel, you can search for a package without a membership. Often, packages purchased through Costco Travel will come with a Costco Shop Card or extra perks which can more than make up for the price of the membership. Plus, Executive members earn 2% back on purchases, including those from Costco Travel.
If you’re an Executive Member, be sure to keep an eye out for extra perks on your vacation package. These can often make up for the additional cost of an Executive Membership.
Take a look at some of the member benefits we found on a London and Paris vacation package:
- $400 London tour credit
- Daily breakfast
- £35 food and beverage credit at the London hotel (Executive Members)
- Fruit basket and chocolates at the Paris hotel (Executive Members)
Bottom Line: You have to be a Costco member to purchase a vacation package from Costco Travel, but you can check prices without being a member. Often, a package will come with perks or even a Costco Shop Card that can more than make up for the cost of a membership. For more information, check out our guide to using Costco Travel .
Booking a European trip through Delta Vacations can be a great way to earn lots of Delta SkyMiles .
You’ll also want to keep an eye out for deals that will award you extra bonus points. At the time of writing, you could get up to a $400 Delta gift card or up to 75,000 Delta SkyMiles for booking a flight and hotel package .
You can earn an additional 2 to 3 SkyMiles per $1 spent when you use a Delta co-branded credit card , too.
If you’d rather use Delta SkyMiles to pay for your vacation package, you can do that, too. You can pay for all or part of your vacation with your miles at 1 cent each in value . That’s just about what we value Delta SkyMiles at, so this can represent a good use of miles.
Bottom Line: You can either earn or use SkyMiles for a vacation package purchased through Delta Vacations.
Expedia is a tried-and-true website for booking travel because it’s easy to use and often has great deals. Your European vacation package can be customized to include flights, a hotel, and even a rental car.
The map feature is a great tool for finding a hotel in the perfect location , and there are lots of filtering options that will help narrow your search results even more.
Expedia participates in the One Key rewards program which allows you to earn and use points on eligible trips and access special member pricing . This is a good way to earn rewards when you don’t participate in a hotel chain’s loyalty program or are booking a hotel that doesn’t have its own loyalty program.
For more information including how to use the One Key program, check out our guide to using Expedia to find great deals on travel .
Hot Tip: If you choose a hotel that has its own loyalty program (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, etc.) you won’t earn hotel points when you book through a third-party website, nor will your elite status be recognized. If hotel points and elite status are important to you, you may want to consider booking direct.
Kayak is a great tool for finding hotels, flights, and vacation packages. It’s a metasearch engine so the prices you’ll see will be from other websites most of the time (though you can occasionally book directly through Kayak). It’s a great way to compare prices from lots of other sites at the same time.
You can use the handy map feature to search for hotels by location or use the filtering options to find a hotel that offers a perk that’s important to you like free breakfast or free parking. There are also options to choose any property type — from apartments to hostels to resorts and everything in between.
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel with Kayak .
United Vacations is a great website to use to search for European vacation packages, especially if you like flying United or live near a United hub that will have lots of flight options.
It can also be a great option for anyone who wants to earn more United MileagePlus miles — you’ll earn them on your vacation package if you provide your membership number at booking. Unfortunately, you can’t redeem United miles for your trip.
This site has many of the sorting and filtering options you’d find on other sites, and you can even add extras like trip insurance or airport transfers to your package.
Bottom Line: You’ll earn United MileagePlus miles when you book a package through United Vacations, but you can’t redeem miles for any part of your trip. Instead, check out these ideas when you’re ready to spend your miles.
CheapTickets is a popular online travel agency for hotels, flights, rental cars, and vacation packages. It’s owned by Expedia so it has the same functionality as that site, but it often has different pricing, so it’s worth checking them both out.
During the booking process, you’ll be able to add extras like airport transportation, a rental car, activities, and trip insurance .
Hot Tip: Before you add trip protection from an online travel agency like CheapTickets, be sure to read up on the policy for your credit card with travel insurance so you don’t end up buying something you may already have. You might also want to price out a policy with a few travel insurance companies to compare plans and prices before you book your trip.
Booking a European vacation package through Priceline is a straightforward and easy process. You can search for any combination of flights, hotels, and cars under the Bundle + Save search tab on the home page. The search results will quickly give you hotel information including the price and how much you can expect to save on the package.
Priceline has its own loyalty program called Priceline VIP that offers discounts, a best rate guarantee, and Express Deal coupons. While these perks are available as soon as you join, the discounts get bigger and better as you reach new status tiers within the program.
Hotel savings start at 10% for all members and go up to 50% on over 45,000 hotels for top-tier VIP Platinum members . Additionally, those with VIP Member or VIP Blue status will get a 5% Express Deal coupon after every trip, VIP Gold members get an 8% Express Deal coupon after every trip, and VIP Platinum members get a 10% Express Deal coupon after every trip.
Hot Tip: Make sure you’re earning lots of points by using a credit card that’s great for purchasing vacation packages .
Now let’s get to the important part — price comparisons. Since it’s hard to compare prices head-to-head for custom packages and ones that include rail tickets, we’ll only be looking at the sites where you can design your own.
Package #1: 6 nights in Paris at Sofitel Arc de Triomphe plus round-trip airfare from Atlanta (ATL) for 2 adults.
Package #2: 6 nights in London at St. Ermin’s Hotel, Autograph Collection plus round-trip airfare from Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) for 2 adults.
*Includes daily continental breakfast, airport transfers, and a guaranteed room upgrade.
For the first example, Expedia has the lowest price by far and the package even includes breakfast! Costco Travel was the most expensive. In the second example, Kayak and Priceline were the lowest-priced options with United Vacations coming in as the most expensive.
As you can see, there’s not a single website that always has the best prices, so it’s always a good idea to price out your vacation package on a few different websites to see where you can get the best deal.
Booking a vacation package for your trip to Europe can be a great way to save some money on a hotel, flights, and even train tickets. Since no single website will always have the best prices, it’s a good idea to price out your trip in a few different places to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE
Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.
Destination Must-Sees
One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B. Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.
France’s romantic capital is a must-see destination, and a gorgeous gateway to the wonders the rest of this country has to offer. Whether your ideal Parisian getaway has you spending some free time sipping coffee at a café and watching the bustling city life, roaming the halls of art at the Louvre, or exploring the bohemian artist’s haven — the Montmartre neighborhood, there’s rich history and culture abound in every corner of the City of Light.
Irish countryside:
Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.
Ancient cities of Italy:
Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.
Destination Must-Dos
Meteora Monastery:
Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.
The Palace of Versailles
The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.
Drift down a canal:
While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.
This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.
This European paradise is often referred to as the land of a thousand islands. Located on the east bank of the Adriatic Sea across from Italy, some say that a trip to Croatia is to experience “the Mediterranean as it once was.” It is a natural and historic setting for the many activities and cultural experiences that lie ahead. The art of wellness is practiced along its shores – be sure to indulge in a heavenly spa treatment.
From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travelers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.
A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.
At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.
Switzerland
Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

1. Amalfi Coast in Italy
We’re all familiar with the postcard-perfect scenery of the impossibly pretty Amalfi Coast.
One of the best ways to experience it is on a road trip, where you can soak up breathtaking views of the coastline along the way.
The 50 km stretch of winding road is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s not hard to see why!
This road has panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side, and picturesque little villages on the other. A series of cliffs adds to the uniqueness of this beautiful spot.
One of the highlights of the trip is braving the narrow winding roads from Nocelle, then rounding a bend, and getting the first glimpse of Positano .
Pastel-coloured buildings cascade down the hillside in an amazing way unique to this part of the world.
If you have time, make a stop at the town of Amalfi, one of the most beautiful Italian coastal towns . The small town is bursting with history and interesting architecture.
The Arab-Norman Cathedral with its Byzantine, striped facade is a testament to the colourful cultural heritage of the area.
Amalfi is also known for its limoncello, so make sure to sample some of that – just don’t get behind the wheel until the effects have worn off!
2. Ring Road in Iceland
The Ring Road of Iceland, or Road 1, is one of the longest on this list, as it’s a 1,332 km drive, showcasing the country’s fascinating landscapes.
This road trip is a geologist’s dream, with unbelievable views of active volcanoes, immense glaciers, and everything in between fire and ice.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is unmissable, with its huge icebergs that calve from a glacier, and then drift serenely across the lagoon.
At the nearby Diamond Beach , little chunks of ice wash up on the dark sand, creating a sparkling carpet that shimmers magically in the dusk.
The magic doesn’t end there, as the Northern Lights are a sight to behold.
It’s worth noting here that the best time to watch these dancing celestial lights is during the months from September to March.
That’s when the Aurora Borealis really comes to life with its green and purple hues. You can park your car at any spot in the road, turn the headlights off, and enjoy the light show!

3. North Coast 500 in Scotland
The North Coast 500, or the NC500, also known as Scotland’s Route 66, is an 830 km drive that starts and ends at Inverness Castle.
It’s a perfectly circular route that became open to the public in 2015. The rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands is unparalleled, and this is a great way to explore it.
This road also takes you through historic castles and stunning coastal scenery.
One of my favourite stops along the road is Dunrobin Castle , which is one of Scotland’s grand houses.
Its fairytale spires, manicured gardens, and wild landscapes surrounding it are simply picture-perfect.
The NC500 , by design, twists and turns through sparsely populated areas like Sutherland and Caithness.
The long drive with only heather-covered hills, and grazing cattle in sight, is a great way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature.
If you’re planning a trip, have a read of my Scotland guides before you go:
- 10 epic castles in Scotland
- 10 gorgeous boutique hotels in Scotland

4. Romantic Road in Germany
Germany’s Romantic Road is a 350 km drive through the heart of Bavaria.
The Romantic Straße, as the Germans call it, takes you back in time where there are castles, medieval walled towns, and half-timbered houses. It’s a real-life fairytale!
For me, the highlight of this trip is the spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle . This 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace stands regally on top of a rugged hill.
Some say that it inspired Walt Disney’s Princess animations, and in particular, the castle in Sleeping Beauty.
Another surreal stop along this road is the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber . Its cobblestone streets and well-preserved medieval architecture will transport you back in time!
I was lucky to be there around Christmas, when the whole town transformed into a winter wonderland.

5. Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland
Imagine standing atop a 214 m high cliff, and watching the Atlantic waves crashing against massive rocks below.
This unforgettable view is at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare , and it’s one of many that you too can see along the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland.
The 2,500 km drive runs mostly along the country’s western seaboard. As you advance through this road trip, you’ll savour Ireland at its best: rich culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.
If you love visiting castles, I’d recommend a stop at Kylemore Abbey , which is a beautiful Victorian neo-Gothic castle standing in the middle of Connemara’s wild landscape.
The coastal villages are also amazing, and I’d suggest visiting Dingle in County Kerry. It’s a particularly delightful destination with jolly colourful houses and friendly pubs.
Plus, if you look carefully at the coast, you might spot the famous resident dolphin, Fungie.
6. Basque Circuit in Spain and France
The Basque Circuit straddles the northern parts of Spain and southwestern France.
It’s an out-of-this-world drive through verdant mountainous regions, charming coastal towns , and vibrant cities.
The 482-km drive starts at Bilbao, Spain and ends at Biarritz, France.
Don’t miss the chance to explore San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) . This elegant city has incredibly beautiful beaches; as for the afternoons, you should definitely sample its world-class cuisine.
If you like architecture, then you’ll find a treasure in Espelette’s white-washed houses, and as you cross into France, you’ll be dazzled by the beauty of Biarritz.
This French seaside town was the preferred destination for European aristocrats, and its Belle Époque architecture reflects that so well!
7. Dalmatian Coast in Croatia
To fully explore the Dalmatian Coast, you’ll need to free up 7-10 days. There’s so much to explore, and every spot is worth seeing.
The road winds through medieval towns, Roman ruins, oyster farms, family-run wineries, and some of the clearest waters in the whole world.
One of my favourite places is the old town of Split . At its core, there’s a palace that was built in the 4th century AD.
The UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace is a filmmaking site, with TV shows like Game of Thrones taking advantage of its ancient walls and narrow streets.
Croatia’s roads and beaches are busiest from June to August when tourists enjoy luxury hotels and turquoise bays.
The ‘shoulder months’ from September to early May are the best times for taking the Dalmatian road trip.
8. The Great Dolomites Road in Italy
The Great Dolomites Road, or as the Italians call it, the Grande Strada delle Dolomiti, is a 110 km road trip through the heart of the Alps.
I love the mountains, so this is one of my favourite road trips in Europe for its dramatic mountain scenery.
A breathtaking moment during the Dolomites road trip comes when you reach the Pordoi Pass. You’ll stand at an elevation of 2,239 m, watching the surrounding peaks.
If you’d like to see more stunning vistas, you can take the cable car to the Sass Pordoi plateau, also known as the “Terrace of the Dolomites”.
I’d recommend making a stop at Cortina d’Ampezzo, which will be hosting the next Winter Olympics in 2026.
It’s a quaint but glamorous village, and one of the most luxurious ski resorts in Europe . While in the summer, you’ll find plenty of hiking opportunities .
The food there is a fusion of Italian and Austrian tastes. Make sure you try canederli, which are bread dumplings served in broth; it’s simple and absolutely delicious!
9. Transfăgărășan Highway in Romania
The Transfăgărășan Highway in Romania isn’t too long, as it’s a 90 km drive, but it’s most certainly an unforgettable experience!
The road twists, winds, and wades into the Carpathian Mountains, sometimes making steep descents and hairpin turns. But these heart-stopping moments are totally worth it!
This highway was built in the 1970s, initially intended as a strategic military route.
At its highest point, it has an altitude of 2,042 m, and that’s where you’ll get the best views of the valley below.
A little heads-up for those who get car sick like me: the road zigzags sharply as it ascends the mountainside.
If you like photography, then you shouldn’t miss the Bâlea Lake, which is a fascinating glacier lake near the road’s highest point.
The crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding peaks on its mirror-like surface in a picture-perfect scene you can only find in Romania.
Discover more of the most beautiful lakes in Europe .
10. The Fjords in Norway
Taking a road trip through Norway’s fjords is like watching extraordinary landscapes in an art gallery, except that all this beauty is real.
As you drive from Bergen to Geiranger, you’ll come across snow-capped mountains, thundering waterfalls, and deep blue fjords.
The Geirangerfjord is one of the most visited locations in Norway. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the best places to experience the country’s unique nature.
The Geiranger Skywalk at Dalsnibba is Europe’s highest fjord viewpoint. From there, even the cruise ships appear tiny and inconsequential beside the massive towering cliffs.

Liquid hand luggage rules return in the EU this weekend - here's what that means
By Sarah Swain | 18 hours ago
Travellers flying in Europe will have to make sure they meet the rules on liquids which are returning this weekend.
The European Union is bringing back limits on liquids at airports
It means all liquids, gels and aerosols in your hand luggage must be a maximum 100ml.
READ MORE: The key things to know about visiting Paris on the cheap
READ MORE: Luggage 'trick' to help your suitcase come off the plane first
They must be placed in a clear, resealable bag. The rules have been in place since 2006 after a foiled bomb plot.
Some airports were starting to ease the rules because of new scanners. But now the blanket ban has been brought back in.
This is because planned new scanners are not yet sorted out.
The EU has suspended the new technology saying it didn't meet performance standards, according to reports.
UK Airports are also rolling out new scanners, which will remove the need for the rules. However for now, the liquid restrictions still apply there too.
The Times reports UK airports will have the new scanners ready next year.

The rules don't apply to baby food or medicine.
Meanwhile, other surprising items are banned from hand luggage.
Having protein powder with you when catching a flight could cause a bit of a headach e it seems.
Other people have been caught out by getting confused about the amount of liquid. To clarify, it's the containers that must be a maximum 100ml.
If you have a bigger bottle that's not allowed, even if it only has small amount of liquid inside.
