Visiting Central African Republic

After spending months travelling across West Africa we were ready to move on.

Visiting Central African Republic (CAR) wasn’t initially part of our planned travels on this leg of Africa

Visiting Central African Republic on a map of Africa

While doing research we learned more about this country and decided to travel overland to see the wildlife in the Dzanga-Sangha lodge.

The Central African Republic is one of the least visited countries in the world and visiting Central African Republic really isn’t for everyone.

It has struggled to find its feet since its independence from France in 1960. Today it ranks as the poorest country in Africa.

The official language is Sangha, but French is widely spoken. The main currency is the Central African Franc.

Visiting Central African Republic – Is it safe?

You won’t find a guide book for the Central African Republic and there are very few blogs.

Most Western governments have issued explicit warnings advising against travel to the Central African Republic under any circumstances.

Violent crimes such as armed robbery, muggings, and homicide, are too common. CAR had some of the worst cases of poachers in recent years too.

Visiting Central African Republic

As large parts of the country are controlled by armed warlord groups who regularly kidnap, injure, and kill civilians, any visitors are either discouraged to visit or are restricted to only a few areas.

Consular services are often either extremely limited or non-existent as most countries have now closed their embassies within CAR and in case of civil unrest would be unable to help.

So you need to do a lot of research and ideally connect with someone on the ground before visiting Central African Republic.

What to see in the Central African Republic?

Tourism in the Central African Republic is pretty much non-existent due to the troubled history. Security in the country is particularly unstable in the north and northwest.

Most visitors are therefore limited their visit to either the capital city, Bangui or the Dzanga Sangha National park in the southwest of CAR.

Visiting Central African Republic is not cheap and the logistics to see more of the country do add.

travelling central african republic street

With the only international airport in the country, Bangui makes the obvious entry point for many travellers. The lack of flights means your best option is the $200-$250 flight from neighbouring Cameroon.

Check Skyscanner for the latest prices and flights available.

We arrived in the late morning from Douala. Our complimentary arrival hotel transfer never showed up so we ended up negotiating a taxi and off we went through the dusty streets of the capital.

In some way, Bangui almost looks like some other capital cities in West and Central Africa we have been to.

However, we could tell things were a lot tougher here.

The heavy presence of UN vehicles combined with the hardship in people’s faces reminded us that this country ranks as one of the poorest in the world and their internal unrest was still ongoing.

The Ledger Hotel seems to be the place most foreigners stay as let’s face it, there are almost no tourists here. As for the diplomats, UN workers, and businessmen, this is the type of hotel that they book.

This is mostly due to the higher level of security and I guess the level of comfort too.

These are your options for hotels in Bangui on Booking.com .

After check-in, we decided to use some of the facilities and spent a few hours at the pool. This was busy with UN troops and a few diplomats with pop music and a pool bar.

It was nice to finally relax after some challenging travels in West and Central Africa. We found out that this was a popular place to spend the weekends.

We certainly felt like we were on another planet and not in CAR.

travelling in central african republic

The downtown of Bangui wasn’t too far from the hotel, but we decided to jump in a taxi and check it out.

Most people warned us about photography and muggings so we were quite happy to just have a look and take it in.

We found that there is very little to see in this city apart from a few old landmarks.

Dzanga-Sangha National Park

Dzanga-Sangha National Park is without any doubt is the star of the Central African Republic.

Our plan to visit overland from Cameroon backfired due to our Cameroon visas being issued incorrectly. They were issued as a single entry instead of a double entry that we’d requested.

So once we would enter CAR we would have to continue onwards to the Republic of Congo.

This would place us further away from Chad , where we were planning to go next, and as our friend who has just done it advised – we needed plenty of free passport pages for many police checkpoints as they stamp them.

We were running desperately low on pages already so this really wasn’t an option.

So Dzanga Sangha was out of the question unless we were planning to pay for a chartered flight. Not likely.

There is a local Lodge ( Sangha Lodge ) that offers both accommodations as well as activities in Dzanga Sangha, such as Lowland Gorilla Trekking, boating safaris, and visits to the famous Dzanga Bai.

Sad you missed Dzanga Sangha. I entered CAR overland from Republic of the Congo (Ouesso to Bangui) and left via Dzangha Sangha into Cameroon in 2018. You can still do it now in 2020. We traveled overland using local transport. It was the highlight of all of my traveling. Make the people stamp over stamps in the future. A little bribe can help with that if they are resistant. CAR is a country without laws so negotiating makes everything possible. I hope someday you can experience Dzanga Sangha and nearby Lobeke. Truly amazing learning about Bayaka culture and seeing the wild animals in the rainforest.

Yes, we would’ve loved to see Dzanga Sangha and it was our plan. But as the Consulate of Cameroon made a mistake and didn’t issue a multi-entry visa for us, only single entry. This meant we couldn’t travel overland in and out. Hopefully we get to return one day.

I found this blog. Please tell me, these states are very dangerous, yes? I have information that the infrastructure is not working, the government forces are not working, so they can shoot you somewhere. An example is the Democratic Republic of Congo. How could you visit these countries? Was it just with a delegation, in a fancy hotel and security? I’ve travelled a bit, I take the local bus, I sleep in bivouacs or the cheapest hostels.

Well, we’re on a journey to visit every country in the world, so yes, we have to visit the dangerous and unstable countries too. We do a lot of research before we visit these countries to ensure our safety while we’re there. We visited Central African Republic independently and stayed in a an expensive hotel with high security. We usually stay in budget accommodation and travel like a local, take buses etc – but for some countries, it isn’t safe to do so. You may learn a little more about our travels through this region of Africa by reading this post – https://www.veryhungrynomads.com/travelling-in-central-africa/

How long did it take to issue a CAR visa in Yaoundé?

Hi Marco, Our visa was issued in 1 or 2 days in Yaounde, we can’t remember exactly.

Hello and thanks for the information. I was supposed to travel to Cameroon/CAR/RofCongo, and Gabon back in 2019, but broke my leg just prior to the trip and had to cancel. I’m starting to arrange the same trip again for the summer of 2023, but I’m a little weary regarding having to show time sensitive Covid PCR tests every time I cross a border in that region.

How was it for you this past summer? Did they ask for 48-72 PCR tests? If they did, did it happen only at airports or at land border crossings as well? Were any of the borders closed when you arrived due to Covid restrictions?

I have all my vaccines, so them proof of that isn’t an issue, if that is all they ask for. But I have had experience, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, that even with everything in order (ie Yellow Fever Virus vax) they still pointed to something on the card that was non-existent and wanted a bribe to let me into the country.

Anyway, any information regarding my queries above would be very helpful.

Hi Tom, sorry to hear you had to cancel your journey in Gabon. Since your trip is planned for summer 2023, anything currently in place regarding PCR tests will most likely change by then. If not, it is simple to take the test and provide the PCR test results as per entry requirements. Yes, you will need a Yellow Fever Certificate and proof of vaccination for COVID-19. And yes sometimes they ask for random vaccinations at borders. Just stay calm and polite and they will eventually just let you go when it’s not needed. We haven’t paid any bribes in Africa as we believe it contributes to corruption.

Not sure which borders you are planning to cross as you mentioned Cameroon CAR Republic of Congo and Gabon. If you were planning to do them in this order then there are some very long journeys to do so, but you probably know that. Also, you haven’t mentioned which summer of 2023 you mean as I am not sure if you live in the Northern or Southern hemisphere. However, the main rainy season lasts from May to November so the overland journey would be more enjoyable and doable from November to April time.

Weather Central African Republic

For an optimal travel experience in the Central African Republic, the recommended time to visit is during the winter months, spanning from December to February, as it coincides with the dry season. During this period, you can expect predominantly dry weather, which enhances the overall enjoyment of your trip. In the Central African Republic, temperatures can become quite hot, particularly at lower altitudes and in the central-northern regions. However, it is worth noting that the nights in the northern areas can occasionally bring a slight chill. About Central African Republic

There are certainly no guide books for the Central African Republic (CAR), and travel there definitely isn't for the fainthearted, but take the plunge and you’ll find a staggeringly beautiful country that’s home to some epic wildlife. The CAR’s troubled history is not to be glossed over – it's suffered from a variety of political problems, poaching and civil war, particularly since 2012 – but away from the news headlines are a few particular areas that offer adventurous travellers something to really get excited about. There are forests and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, little-known nature reserves and fascinating communities, but the place for raw, larger-than-life wildlife experiences is undoubtedly Dzanga-Sangha National Park. It may be humid and there may be a good deal of red tape to tackle but if you’re hankering after a good dose of adventure, add the CAR to your list.

Where to go in Central African Republic

Dzanga-Sangha

Why you'll love it.

For pioneering spirits and Africa aficionados, the CAR is one of the most rewarding, captivating and exciting destinations out there. To visit will undoubtedly leave you speechless – and there’s not many places that can claim that.

Off the beaten track

We might go as far to say all of it?!

Something to think about

There’s bureaucracy and there’s paperwork; the weather might not play ball and it will be chaotic, crazy and sometimes a little bit nerve-wracking. But it’s all worth it…

When to go to Central African Republic

The best time of year to visit the CAR is probably between November and March when the rainfall declines and the clear skies make for near perfect photography conditions and wildlife encounters. It’s in these months that the lowland gorillas spend more time on lower ground and are perhaps slightly easier to spot in the thick foliage. As a whole, the country experiences a higher than average rainfall and it’s wise to always be prepared! Most of the rain falls between August and November, and then again in May – the ‘short rainy season’ – but it’s not a strict pattern. June and July are often referred to as the ‘short dry season’ and can also make a good time to visit. The rainforest fruits at this time of year also, making for incredible gorilla viewing. And regardless of what time of year you visit, you will probably experience some quite ferocious humidity – the thick, jungle foliage sees to that!

Need to know

Essential information before you leave, getting to central african republic.

While the Central African Republic’s international airport is in the capital, Bangui, our guests travel straight to Dzanga-Sangha from the Republic of Congo. Most often, guests will travel to Sangha Lodge from Odzala via the following route. Every Sunday and Wednesday, a scheduled flight operates from Mboko Airstrip to Kabo Airstrip in the Republic of Congo. Following this, a five-hour boat transfer takes guests up the Sangha River into the Central African Republic. A trusted Congo Conservation Company guide accompanies all transfers and border formalities are managed along the river. Departure happens via the same route, where you’ll travel downstream to Kabo by boat, take a flight to Odzala (available on Sundays and Wednesdays) and arrive in Brazzaville via a charter flight (on Mondays and Thursdays).

Health & Safety on a Central African Republic trip

Health & Safety Please consult your personal physician and/or a travel clinic preferably 6 weeks prior to your departure. Vaccine requirements vary based on your country of origin and your travel itinerary and your previous vaccination history. It is best to consult with your physician or the CDC website for guidelines. Important vaccinations to consider and which may either be required or recommended are: Hepatitis A & B, typhoid and yellow fever (this must have been received at least 10 days prior to arrival). Please always carry your ‘International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP)’ or ‘Yellow Card’ with you. Malaria We advise that you consult a medical practitioner at least six weeks prior to travel. Malaria is present in CAR and it is strongly advisable to take malaria prophylactics before, during and after your visit. Please consult a medical professional regarding which prophylactics will be suitable for you. In addition to the recommendations of your travel clinic or physician, you may also consider the following proactive preventative measures: ● Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. Recommended repellents contain 20-35% DEET but it is a very virulent repellent, and should be used cautiously. ● Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants at dawn and dusk, as well as closed shoes. ● Use a mosquito net if your tent or room isn't screened or air-conditioned; and spray insecticide or burn a mosquito coil before going to bed. If you come down with flu-like symptoms either during or within four to six weeks after your visit to a malaria area, seek a doctor's advice immediately and let him/her know that you have been in a malaria area. You can also visit www.malaria.org.za for more information. Communication CAR country code: +236 Calling overseas from CAR: From a landline dial 00 followed by the country code plus area code and number. e.g. USA: 00 1 910 795 1048 When calling from a cell phone dial + prefix followed by the country code plus area code and number. e.g. USA: + 1 910 795 1048

Money & Gratuities in Central African Republic

Money The Central African CFA Franc (FCFA) is the official currency of the CAR. Circulation of the FCFA is in banknote denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 francs. Please check with your bank for charges and advice when using international ATMs. VISA and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards, while American Express has limited to no coverage. It is advisable to have some cash for smaller shops and for tipping; this will need to be done before entering CAR. IMPORTANT: When bringing foreign currency (e.g. USD, GBP, EUR) into the country, be sure to have the new format with no damage or marks. Gratuities Gratuities are not compulsory or expected; rather it is a reward for excellent service. If you are pleased with the service you receive, you are more than welcome to tip your guide or the staff. Gratuities suggestions: Guides: 20 Euro per person per day Gorilla trackers: 10 Euro per person per trek General staff (put in a central box in the camp’s main area): 15 - 20 Euro per person per day Any gratuities for the general Congo Conservation Company team will be evenly distributed, so it’s best if individual tips aren’t given.

Travel Insurance for Central African Republic

Insurance It is a condition of booking that you carry the correct comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover yourself, as well as any dependents/travelling companions for the duration of your trip. This insurance should include cover in respect of, but not limited to, the following eventualities: Compulsory Insurance: a. Emergency evacuation expenses b. Medical expenses c. Repatriation expenses Recommended Insurance: a. Cancellation or curtailment of trip b. Damage/theft/loss of personal luggage, money and goods

Central African Republic trip visas

As a general precaution, we recommend you make several copies of your travel-related documents (passport, traveller’s cheques, credit cards, itinerary, airline tickets, insurance cover, visas, etc). Leave one set at home, and bring another set with you, and place it in a location separate from your originals. Most nationalities do require a visa to enter CAR. Immigration control is very strict, and is known to deny entry to those not meeting the requirements. Passports MUST be valid for at least six months (we recommend nine) from your departure from CAR to home. There must be at least TWO consecutive blank VISA pages in the passport (not endorsement pages). Please do contact the embassy or consultant in your home country to reconfirm visa requirements, as they change often. Visa Central is also a good resource for further information.

What to pack for a Central African Republic trip

Climate The CAR as a whole experiences higher than average rainfall, with most falling between August and November, and around May (the ‘short rainy season’). Regardless of the time of year, Dzanga-Sangha experiences intense humidity. Dress code Generally speaking, light layers of clothing in neutral safari colours of green, khaki and beige are the best items to bring with you. Dark colours such as navy or black can attract tstese flies and are best avoided, as are bright colours like yellow, red and purple. What to pack Lightweight layers: breathable long-sleeve shirts and long trousers, etc. Waterproof sandals and / or boots Rain poncho (dependant on the season) Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat Well-sealing water bottle Waterproof bag Insect repellent, hand sanitizer / wipes A good pair of Binoculars (8x40/8x42 is recommended) Spare batteries, plug adaptors and charging equipment The camp will have a small medical and first aid kit, but we recommend bringing your own supply of essentials - cough medicine, plasters, vitamins, aspirin and paracetamol, and anything else you use on a regular basis. Electricity The CAR uses 220V, 50Hz AC, and sockets take mostly Type C and E. It is best to bring an adapter/convertor combination. Camera Equipment (for the enthusiasts) • A telephoto lens (200/300mm) • Flash and fast film (400 ASA) for night photography • Lots of film (64,100,200,400 ASA) if using an SLR camera • Spare memory cards for digital cameras • Camera cleaning equipment and a good dust proof bag • Bring spare batteries as although you may recharge your batteries at the camps, charging capacity can be limited. Luggage Please check with your airlines for the specific luggage restrictions relevant to your flight schedule. Many international airlines have a baggage allowance of 20kgs or more per person and commercial airlines generally permit two (2) pieces of checked luggage per person. The carry-on bag must be of such dimensions and weight as set by the airlines. The Congo Conservation Company allows 15kgs per person, including hand luggage. Anything above this amount needs to be requested with the team beforehand. If possible, pack your belongings in a soft bag for ease of transport.

Central African Republic

Central African Republic (CAR) is a country with staggering rare natural beauty and some wonderful wildlife. Not so long ago it was one of the best places in Africa for encounters with huge forest elephants and western lowland gorillas, and the best place in the world, some say, to see butterflies. However, since 2012 political problems and religious-fuelled civil war have made the country completely off limits to travellers for safety reasons, with all Western governments warning against any visits here.

15 Best Places to Visit in Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is arguably the richest country in the world when it comes to natural beauty and diversity of wildlife but in terms of money, the country is one of the world’s poorest. Landlocked between several other war torn countries and facing its own difficulties with poachers, military violence and general lawlessness, travel to the Central African Republic is strongly discouraged. The history of the country is, like most on the African continent, tarnished by the colonization by Europeans, the remnants of which can still be seen in some of the main cities.

The country does however have its charms which come in various shapes and sizes ranging from rare butterflies to gorillas and elephants. There is nowhere on earth that is more suitable for safaris and lovers of wildlife however even with such natural assets such as these the countries tourism cannot thrive due to its political problems.

The country is one of the least developed in the continent and even the world but the people of the country mostly remain friendly and honest. If a time comes soon when the country is safe again to travel too, then these are, in our opinion, the 15 best places to visit in the Central African Republic .

Bangui

The capital of the Central African Republic, Bangui is situated on the banks of the Ubangi River. As with many African cities the nightlife and markets here are worth visiting. In addition to this, the presidential palace is a key attraction.

The setting of the city within the rapids of the Ubangi River and the rolling hills nearby make it a city with natural charm. Despite this, the city is rough and ready with dusty roads and an underdeveloped feel.

The so called Big Mosque is a popular place to visit and there are a number of museums that document both the colonization of the country as well as the culture of its indigenous people. The sights can be done in a couple of days but you may feel like sticking around for longer if you enjoy the atmosphere of the place.

Zinga

This town may be small, measuring only 1km in length and 300m in width, but it is a valuable place to visit for tourists in the Central African Republic.

The wooden houses here are great examples of traditional Congo houses.

The people of the town are friendly and welcoming to tourists and the best way to arrive is by canoe or motorboat due to the town’s location on the Ubangi River.

3. Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park

Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park

Located on the border between the Central African Republic and Chad, the Manovo-Gounda National Park is one of the finest places in the country to see wildlife.

The park covers a huge area of around 1.75 million hectares and is home to many species of animals including the incredibly rare black rhino. Other species found within the park include wild dogs, cheetahs, elephants and leopards.

There are many guided safaris available throughout the year which take place with local and knowledgeable guides.

4. Dzanga-Ndoki National Park

Dzanga-Ndoki National Park

Another massive National Park and another massive reason to visit the Central African Republic. The National Park of Dzanga-Ndoki is located in the south-west of the country and has been around since 1990.

Despite ongoing trouble with animal poaching, the park is still an incredible place to visit and offers opportunities to see animals such as elephants and gorillas in their natural habitats.

Guided tours of the park can be arranged or, if you want to see this park and Manovo-Gounda, many companies can take you to visit both.

Boali Waterfalls

The small town of Boali is mainly visited for the nearby Boali Falls. These waterfalls are just upstream from the town and are possibly the best known landmark in the Central African Republic.

The falls consist of several small and separate falls in the dry seasons but in the wet season they join together to form a powerful and impressive fall.

Several tourism companies operate in the are and there is even a hotel and restaurant atop the falls.

6. Chinko Nature Reserve

Chinko Nature Reserve

Also known as the Chinko Project, the Chinko Nature Reserve based on the Chinko Drainage Basin. The nature reserve is home to many species and is seen as one of the most biologically diverse places on earth.

It is currently under threat from armed herdsmen who, during their crossing through the area,  kill any and all predators to protect their herd.

The reserve is also under threat from ivory poachers. Despite these threats the area is a fascinating place to visit and, if you are so inclined, it is also a great project to get involved in.

7. Andre Felix National Park

The Andre Felix National Park occupies both the Central African Republic and Sudan. The park is set in stunning terrain of lush green and jagged cliffs and is a haven for birdlife in particular.

The area of the park is just under 600,000 hectares, which is made up of around 50% shrubland and 50% forest.

The park can be explored with a local guide for a fee and is a great place to spend some time birdwatching.

Bouar

To experience ancient Africa, the small town of Bouar is a must visit destination. Just outside of the town, there are a large number of stone megaliths known locally as Tajuna.

They are believed to mark burial grounds and some are as tall as 5 metres. The stones date back to the neolithic ages, making them just as old as Stonehenge in Great Britain but there are far more to see here.

The site is a UNSECO World Heritage Site.

Kembe

Kembe is a traditional African village with its mud brick huts and thatched roofs. Nearby is the Kotto River which cascades in two streams to form a spectacular v shaped waterfall.

The children of the village play in the river, fighting against its strong current whilst the adults here use the river for more practical purposes such as washing clothes.

If you can reach Kembe; it is a great place to witness the simplicity of African village life.

Coffee

Lobaye is a region in the Central African Republic. It is one of the best places to witness indigenous tribal people including Pygmy tribespeople.

The area is only 60 miles away from the capital but the lifestyles are vastly different.

Lobaye is also known for producing great coffee and visitors to the area can explore the plantations and learn more about how it is cultivated.

Birao

Birao is remote and not often visited. The city had an airport although it is currently not being used.

The city is a good place to get a feel of life in the Central African Repulbic and the nearby borders with Chad and Sudan make the markets even more varied than usual.

Be warned however that the city is thought of as being dangerous even by the standards of the country and travellers should exercise extreme caution.

Mbaiki is situated in the southwest of the Central African Republic, roughly 80 miles from the capital city of Bangui.

If you are in the capital and have your own set of wheels then you will be pleased to know that the road between Bangui and Mbaiki is the best in the country. The main economy in the city is based on coffee and timber and travellers can learn about both whilst visiting.

It is worth noting that a fee applies to use the road and using it at night is not advisable.

13. Bamingui

Bamingui

The town of Bamingui is in the north of the Central African Republic, around 250 miles from the capital city of Bangui.

The main reason to visit the town is as a base for visits to the nearby Bamingui-Bangoran National Park which is a haven for many species of mammals, birds and other creatures.

The flora is also extremely diverse and interesting due to the parks sub tropical ecosystem and its varying altitude between 400 and 1500 metres above sea level.

Bimbo

Bimbo is the second largest city in the Central African Republic and is located in the southwest of the country.

The city is a good example of city life in the country and bustling markets are a regular attraction.

The city is home to the country’s only sex segregated female prison. The population of the city has doubled in the last ten years and the atmosphere is loud and chaotic.

15. Berberati

Berberati

Berberati is one of the more peaceful cities.

Located in the southwest of the country, far away from the troubles in the centre of the country and Sudan, Berberati is probably one of the safest places to visit in the country at this troubled time and is a good base for visitors to the nearby Dzangha-Sanga Nature Reserve.

Whilst in the area it is worth looking at the history left behind by the various occupants throughout the past such as the French military.

Central African Republic

As one of the least visited countries of Africa, the Central African Republic or CAR is sure to bring you on an off-the-beaten path experience where you shouldn’t see any tourists. With the security situation improving as time go by, it is certain that the country will progressively appear on more and more travellers’ radars.

At the current time, Young Pioneer Tour organise Bespoke tours to C.A.R.

Getting in Central African Republic

To get to the country safely, there are currently two choices. First, you can cross from Cameroon across the Kadei river and do some activities related to the nearby national parks. Secondly, you can fly into the capital, Bangui.

Getting around Central African Republic

The infrastructure of the CAR are minimal. As such, most travel within the country involves a domestic flight. Young Pioneer Tours can assist you in booking those flights.

Things to do in Central African Republic

Dzangha-sangha national park.

The National Park of Dzanga-Sangha is CAR number one destination for nature-lovers. In fact, it might well be one of the most interesting wildlife site of Africa, albeit a very underrated one. Located by the border of Cameroon and Congo in the southern part of the country, the protected areas of Dzanga-Sangha are well renowned for their western lowland gorillas and forest elephants.

The park is administrated directly by the WWF and has some very well organised and clean lodges available for tourists such as the Doli Lodge. To reach the park, it will be necessary to charter a flight from Bangui, which is not as expensive as it sounds! There is also a weekly flight available.

Pigmy village tour

While the neighbouring country of South Sudan hosts the world’s tallest ethnicity, the Dinkas, CAR is known for having the world’s shortest ethnicity, the Aka or Pygmy peoples. Located in the western and southern forested regions of the country, some of the Pygmy tribes welcome visitors and it is possible for us to organise visit and stays amongst the people.

Tours of Bangui

For those who are short on time or on a budget, Young Pioneer Tours can organise accommodation and tour guides in Bangui. During this tour, of 1 to 3 days, we will take you around the main sights of the boomtown of Central African Republic. Also, for those on a longer project in Africa necessitating complicated visas, some embassies in Central African Republic offer much easier processes to acquire visas for African countries such as Equatorial Guinea.

BOOK A TRIP

The Central African Republic, as the name suggests is located in the center of Africa slightly above the equator. It is boarded by Chad in the north, Sudan in the north, South Sudan in the east, Democratic Republic of Congo in the south, Congo Brazzaville in the southwest and Cameroon in the West. The country experiences a savannah climate in the north while an equatorial climate in the south prevails.

Gorilla trekking in Central African Republic

All though still in its infancy stages, gorilla trekking is one of the most popular tourist activities carried out in Central African Republic. The Central African Republic is home to the western lowland mountain gorillas that generally spread across seven African countries like Cameroon, Gabon, DR Congo Angola Equatorial Guinea, and Central African Republic. On the other hand, their siblings, the mountain gorilla are only found in DR Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The Dzanga Sanga Reserve

The Dzanga Sanga Reserve is the greatest lowland gorilla trekking destination in Central African Republic. The mosaic ecosystem of thick rain forest, marshlands, rivers, and mud ponds is a conducive environment for the lowland mountain gorillas where they forage mostly in trees. Encounters with these great apes in their natural habitat offer a fascinating experience.

Over 2,212 individuals of the endangered lowland mountain gorilla live in the Dzanga, however only three groups are fully habituated, that is, fully accustomed to human presence and can be observed by tourists.

Gorilla species in Central Africa

The lowland gorilla family is divided into two subspecies that is the Eastern and Western lowland gorilla. The Dzanga gorillas belong to the Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) the western lowland gorillas are distinguished by their general small size as compared to the Eastern lowland, however with a larger skull and ears. They also have a brown grey coat auburn chest.

OTHER TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Bangui city.

The former French colonial post is the capital city of Central African Republic, set upon gentle hills touching the Ubangi River, to give it a magnificent landscape. Bangui is the center of political, economic and cultural life of Central African Republic with iconic tourism attractions like the presidential palace, which bares all political scares of the country, having been overrun by the Seleka rebels in 2013.

The Central market is another exciting place to visit, to experience the local trade, and items being sold. The city nightlife is charming and buzzing to both African and western rhythms escorted by well-brewed drinks.

Berberati City

Far away from the politically volatile Bangui city is the Berberati City in the south west of the country near the border with Cameroon. The city is the safest place in Central Africa republic. The city is host to historical buildings that highlight the German and French administrations that ounce occupied it. In 1911, the City was ceded to German by France but was later recaptured by the French during World War 1. With such history, the city quickly developed infrastructure like and airport and hotels which facilitate tourism especially wildlife lovers who venture into the Dzanga Sanga Reserve.

The city’s countryside is bedrock of cultural diversity. The local communities are welcoming and with a good local guide, one can engage in local cultural activities that expose a tourist in to the humane realm of African culture.

The Manovo Gound St. Floris National Park

The 1,714,000ha area is a diverse ecosystem that combines the animals from the rainforest and the savannah grasslands. Animals like elephants, buffaloes, hippos, black rhino, leopard, lions and rare bird species are a common citing in the park. The abundance of animal and plant life here is the largest in the entire Central African Republic, offering the tourist a feel of both worlds of adventure, from the rain forest to the savannah experience.

FACT SHEET: United States Response to the Clade I Mpox Outbreak in Several African Countries

On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern about the upsurge of mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa. This announcement followed the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's (Africa CDC) declaration of a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security on August 13. The significant increase of clade I mpox cases, in both endemic countries (those that have previously had mpox outbreaks) and non-endemic countries (those that have historically not reported mpox outbreaks), threatens the health security of the region, as well as countries outside Africa. In addition, clade I mpox has a newer sub-clade referred to as clade Ib. Both clade Ia and clade Ib are circulating in DRC and have been detected in neighboring countries and in Sweden and Thailand (one case each associated with travel to Africa with known clade I cases).

In 2022, the world experienced a global outbreak of clade IIb mpox, which led to more than 95,000 cases across 115 non-endemic countries and continues to occur in the United States. The Biden-Harris Administration responded by ensuring the JYNNEOS mpox vaccine was available to at-risk populations in the U.S.

In February, as the clade I mpox outbreak grew in DRC, the Biden-Harris Administration established an incident response structure across federal departments and agencies to ensure a coordinated response and to take a proactive approach to U.S. domestic preparedness for potential clade I mpox cases. Clade I mpox causes a higher number of severe infections and has a higher mortality rate than clade IIb mpox. Because evidence for clade I mpox clinical outcomes is based primarily on data from endemic countries without widespread supportive care, particularly DRC, we do not yet know how clade I mpox would impact Americans; we do expect it would cause lower morbidity and mortality in the United States.

United States preparedness for clade I mpox

The Biden-Harris Administration has been closely monitoring the spread of mpox, specifically clade I mpox, and has been working since December 2023 to prepare domestically. The risk to most Americans from clade I mpox circulating in Central and Eastern Africa and the travel associated cases outside of Africa is very low, and there are no known cases in the United States at this time. The United States is well prepared to rapidly detect, contain, and manage clade I cases should they occur domestically.

The United States continues to increase our capacity to detect cases of clade I and clade IIb mpox through existing surveillance systems, including wastewater testing, and through expanding the robust diagnostic testing capacity built during the ongoing clade IIb outbreak to ensure coverage for clade I. The ability to expedite such diagnostic testing—in particular for those with recent travel to DRC or neighboring countries—also supports rapid detection. In addition to reaffirming the importance of mpox vaccination for those who are eligible , we are working to prevent the spread of both clades of mpox by providing and disseminating recommendations for clinicians, health departments, diagnostic laboratories, and the public.

From August 2022 to August 2024, the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), distributed more than one million vials of the JYNNEOS vaccine across the United States to mitigate the spread and severity of the clade II mpox outbreak. In addition to the preventive vaccine, partners across the U.S. government are working to better understand the effectiveness of existing treatments for mpox and have treatment options available in the event that clade I mpox is reported in the United States. The United States will continue to provide information to the public on transmission, prevention, and treatment of mpox. Those who have already had clade IIb mpox or who are fully vaccinated against it are expected to be protected against clade I mpox.

CDC has issued an updated Health Alert Network advisory for clinicians and public health departments and partners, as well as an updated Travel Health Notice , recommending travelers to DRC and neighboring countries to practice enhanced precautions. Through the State Department, our embassies are working to keep U.S. citizens abroad informed of these updates. At this time, CDC and WHO do not discourage travel to DRC or elsewhere due to the mpox outbreaks.

United States support to the global mpox outbreak

The U.S. government has been closely monitoring the spread of clade I mpox in DRC and the risk to neighboring countries since 2023, and we have been working closely with the affected country governments and regional and global health partners to reduce the impact of this outbreak and safeguard public health. The U.S. government support for the mpox response builds on our longstanding partnerships in global health security and development with DRC and throughout Africa, which have helped to combat infectious diseases, such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria for more than 20 years. In fiscal year 2023, the United States allocated more than $2.65 billion in bilateral health funding to countries in Central and Eastern Africa and is the largest global health donor.

Since March 2024, USAID and CDC together have provided an additional $20 million USD to support clade I mpox response efforts in Central and Eastern Africa, and on August 20, USAID announced up to an additional $35 million in emergency health assistance to bolster response efforts, pending Congressional Notification, bringing the proposed total U.S. government financial support for DRC and other affected countries in the region to more than $55 million.

In addition to direct financial support, the United States government is surging staff to support the mpox response. More than 200 staff including epidemiologists, laboratorians, and risk communication experts have been deployed to support response efforts in the United States and Africa. United States government support has focused on a range of critical public health interventions aimed at limiting transmission and reducing mpox morbidity and mortality. These interventions include surveillance with deployment of additional local field epidemiologists, risk communication and community engagement, laboratory supplies and diagnostics, infection prevention and control, clinical services, and vaccine planning.

In addition to scaling up surveillance, testing, and treatment of cases, vaccination will be a critical element of the response to this outbreak. Successful vaccination campaigns will require health workers to provide vaccinations, financial support to roll out vaccine and vaccination supplies, and regulatory approval for use of vaccines in affected countries. To support this effort, USAID is donating 50,000 doses of the FDA-approved JYNNEOS vaccine to DRC, as well as financial support for rollout of the vaccine doses. The United States is working with other countries that have vaccine stockpiles, WHO, and international partners to encourage additional donations that support vaccine efforts and address challenges with vaccine delivery. This includes evaluating vaccine demand, supporting country engagement on regulatory pathways, planning vaccine implementation, and providing technical assistance to deliver the vaccines.

The United States is working with bilateral, multilateral, and private sector partners to develop and implement a coordinated response – including encouraging collaboration between WHO and Africa CDC on their response plans. The United States, through the State Department, will continue working through the U.S.-Africa CDC Joint Action Plan adopted in November 2023 to increase African Union Member States' capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to health emergencies.

The Biden-Harris Administration will continue its whole-of-government response to this growing outbreak, building on lessons learned from the 2022 mpox response. To learn more about mpox, signs and symptoms, treatments, and prevention, please visit the CDC website here .
