Extra Info. History
Together, Sinhgad, Rajgad and Torna make the most significant cluster of historic forts anywhere in Maharashtra. Rajgad served as the capital of the Maratha Empire during the early years of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja’s life. This was the first capital of his idea of Swaraj. Torna was the first fort that Shivaji conquered at the young age of 16 years and thus the seed of the Maratha Empire.
The Sinhgad Fort, originally known as Kondhana is the third and the most significant fort of this trio. It saw more battles and attacks than most forts in the history of the Maratha Empire. Most notable of them was the battle of Sinhgad in 1670 when the warrior “Tanhaji Malusare” recaptured this fort from the Mughals and brought it back to the Maratha Empire. He lost his life in this battle and became immortal in the annals of history.

The Sinhagad to Rajgad Trek brings together two of the most renowned and much-loved forts in Maharashtra. The trail connecting Sinhagad Fort and Rajgad Fort offers the most incredible panoramic views of the Sahyadris.
This trek starts at Sinhagad Fort located about 38 km southwest of Pune. There are several buses connecting Pune city and Atkarwadi, the base village of Sinhagad Fort. It takes an almost 1.5-hour trek to the top of Sinhagad from its base village. The top of the fort is also accessible by cars and bikes.
On reaching the top, you can spend some time exploring the fort and its various ancient remnants and sites, which include Kalyan Darwaja, Tilak Bungalow, Tanaji Malusare Memorial, Dev Taki, etc. You can also marvel at the breath-taking views from the top of the fort. Another highlight of Sinhagad is the mouth-watering local food you get atop the fort and also while climbing the fort.
Rajgad fort is situated about 35 km south of Sinhagad Fort. The route leading to Rajgad Fort passes through the village of Vinjar. You need to cross a ridge comprised of a few small hills in order to reach Vinjar. From Vinjar, you can either hire car or an auto-rickshaw to Gunjavane, the base village of Rajgad. Or else, you can walk through some fields behind Vinjar bus-stop and reach Sakhar village. From Sakhar, you can proceed to Gunjavane by taking the Gunjavane Road. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to ascend Rajgad Fort from Gunjavane.
The Sinhagad to Rajgad Trek is a dream-come-true trek for history lovers and adventure enthusiasts. But it takes quite a bit of physical and mental strength to complete this trek. While doing this trek, make sure to carry sufficient water, snacks and a basic first-aid kit which may come in handy in emergencies. Certain patches along the route can be quite slippery during monsoon, so please take extra precaution.

➤ How To Be Fit For The Trek?
Work on cardiovascular endurance.
If you’re new to fitness, ease into it by gradually increasing your pace. Here’s a suggested progression:
- Start with a brisk 5 km walk in 45 minutes.
- Gradually increase to walking 5 km four times a week.76
- Introduce jogging as you feel more comfortable.
- Increase the distance you jog until you can do 5 km in 40 minutes.
- If you prefer cycling, aim for 15 km in 60 minutes initially.
- Progress to covering 18 km in one hour.
Work on Strength Training
It is one of the most important areas to work on! To trek comfortably, focus on strength training for your glutes, calves, and knees. Also, work on your core.
For core strength, planks and their variations (elbow, side planks) are highly effective.
Also, incorporate these strength exercises:
- Aim for 4 sets of 20 squats each, including sumo squats.
- Include lunges (forward, backward, and lateral).
- Don’t forget planks!
Work on Flexibility
Flexibility is important to increase the range of motion on the trek. Work on your joints, like shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.
Maintaining flexibility is key to trekking comfortably, especially when carrying a backpack, no matter how light. Regularly stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles helps relax the tissues, reducing strain on your back.
If you’re short on time or space and can’t jog outdoors, you can get a workout in indoors.
