Sailing Tours

Our sailing tours we offer, 3 days & 2 nights tour, snorkel & sailing tour, sunset sailing tour, come sail with us on our, 3 days & 2 nights sailing tour.

This tour was created to take you away from the high traffic areas around Caye Caulker and Belize City to the remote cayes of the southern waters of Belize. The overnight is a sailing tour that is a one way trip. There is not a round trip, back to Caulker or San Pedro. Guests often use this change of location to explore the beautiful southern mainland of Belize and then eventually move onwards or come back to Caye Caulker. What is important to note in the structure of the journey gives the customer the maximum benefit to explore a large section of the reef over a short period of time. The tour sails entirely inside the inner reef where the calm waters ensure comfort.

Our guests sail off on an adventure of a lifetime at 9:00am from the Ragga Sailing Adventures office. Rendezvous Caye is the destination on the first day, but first Goff's or Sergeant's Caye with 2 snorkeling stops and fishing along the way. This day has the longest sailing times out of the three days (5-6 hours depending on the wind) as we make our way out of the well trafficked areas to the remote areas of more Southern waters. Rendezvous Caye we will set up tents and furnish them with our mats and sheets and the Chef will strike up the grill to cook the catch of the day. Sunset on Rendezvous Caye is truly spectacular and washed down with rum cocktails and ceviche, that is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Today we will make way to Tobacco Caye. Shorter sailing times for this day (4 -5 hours depending on the wind) with snorkeling at Colson Caye, Southern Long Caye Channel and Caye Glory with the loggerhead turtle and Caribbean stingrays. We stop for the night at the picturesque Tobacco Caye. Tobacco Caye is located off the Tobacco Caye range and located on Belize's barrier reef and has a unique charm like no other you will have seen. Here we still have the remote experience but we also have the added benefit with some creature comforts such as room or dormitory sleeping instead of tents. Once again the Chef will whip up a feast for all dietary needs and all washed down with local rum, gin or vodka drinks, juices, sodas and obviously water on tap. For those who want to upscale and have their own private shower facilities then we can offer either Ocean View rooms or over the water cabanas for an additional $100US per room. This will obviously depend on availability when making the reservation.

Last but not the least, day 3! We take the boat off the island for a long snorkel in the Channel off the beautiful South Water Caye and manatee watching. Passengers return in time for a BBQ lunch on the beach leaving sufficient time to rinse off before packing for the journey home. Departure will be at 2.30pm by motor boat into central Dangriga town, dropping off at the rivermouth by the Riverside Cafe. This journey will take 40 minutes and so the arrival time will be between 3:15 - 3:30pm (depending on how punctual departure time was).

Please note that the menu is fairly fish oriented however each evening meal we will add a chicken dish along with salad or veggie dishes and rice and or potatoes. When in season conch and fresh lobster will be served - shrimp throughout the year. All dietary requirements can be fulfilled as long as they are communicated to us in advance of the journey - nothing is too complicated! For those who have strong allergies to peanuts (there will be none on this trip) and for those with shellfish allergies, we are experienced in ensuring that the food preparation is perfectly safe for all guests. Throughout the day and night there will be water at all times - guests will be encouraged to drink water to avoid dehydration. Along with water we have juice and sodas. Alcoholic beverages are served at night with local rums, vodka and gin with all the necessary mixers. We do not carry beer with us on the trip as it requires too much refrigeration and that is impossible on a three day journey off the grid - sorry! However we can confirm that the bar at Tobacco Caye can serve some nicely chilled cold beers if guests prefer this rather than our selection.

The weather is a vital component to the trip's success however it is almost impossible to be 100% accurate about the weather. For a trip to be confirmed we need to have a forecast that can allow all passengers comfort. Cloud cover is not a reason to cancel a trip as clouds rarely stay around for more than a morning or an afternoon for us on the coast. However heavy rain for more than a morning or an afternoon is reason to either cancel the trip or even postpone. We also monitor the winds. Heavy winds with cool weather can make the trip uncomfortable but in the summer months the heavy winds can be great for sailing. Determining an accurate weather forecast will be done the eve of the trip, often in the afternoon. Generic apps that measure weather, however accurate in your home town, are not accurate for us along the coast. Let us take our experience to ascertain what is best. To do this we take advice from the Belize Met office in person, we take the time to call the Chief Forecaster directly and get their opinion. We reserve the right to postpone or cancel a trip if this information leads us to believe that the trip's success will be compromised due to the weather. This being said, most of the year we have good weather, with only rainfall at night and little or none during the day!

Returning to Caye Caulker or traveling after the trip can be facilitated through Floralia bus schedule, Tropic Air: flights schedule. or Maya Air: flights schedule.

High Season: $600 USD/per person. November 1st - May 31st. Low Season: $550 USD/per person. June 1st - October 31st. 12 years of age required.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you did not do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain

Testimonials

What our clients say.

The three-day, two-night sailing trip was incredible! We did tons of snorkeling and saw so much sea life, both while snorkeling and sailing. I also really enjoyed camping on the remote islands - it was so peaceful to fall asleep to the stars. Hugo, Rob, and Linthon - our crew, captain, and chef - were awesome. Could not recommend this trip more!

We had the best day, sailing on the Raga Prince They made sure all of our needs were met. We visited shark ray alley, the coral garden, went spear fishing, snorkeling, ate the delicious lunch that was provided and learned about the many different types of fish that we saw in and around the barrier reef. It was a fabulous day all around!! We highly recommend Ragga Tours. Make sure to ask for Captain Kaylon and Guide Dwayne. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

Marvin was an awesome guide for our trip. We met people from all over the world and had an awesome experience exploring the more remote islands in Belize. The trip was packed with sunbathing, snorkeling, spear fishing, fishing, and enjoying some rum punch. Ever was incredible and we couldn’t have done the trip without Linton & the spear fishing king himself - Juan! An absolute MUST DO for anyone visiting Belize!

It’s time to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as you set sail from the shores of Caye Caulker, Belize, and head out into the Caribbean Sea. Bask in the sun from the hammock at the front of the boat, and enjoy the refreshing sea spray that’ll cool you down and remind you that you’re not dreaming.

Discover the Belizean Barrier Reef

You’re part of the Raggamuffin Tours crew now, and every vessel needs some man power to keep it sailing in the right direction. Try pulling up the sails or fishing from the back of the boat. As the crew will tell you from the beginning – the more you put into this, the more you’ll get out of it.

Stop a few times each day to jump in the big blue and snorkel the vibrant shallow reefs. The crew will even guide you in the right direction and point out some cool sea life along the way, from colourful corals to playful manatees. Try your hand at spearfishing, because where else can you have a go? Catch something for dinner, or do your bit to keep the overpopulation of lion fish in check.

Island Hopping in the Caribbean

As the sun sinks into the sky and the rum punch starts flowing, your paradise island Rendezvouz Caye awaits. Pitch a tent with an ocean view, and talk all things travel and beyond over an incredible buffet style dinner. The catches of the day are cooked to perfection by the skilled Raggamuffin Tours on board chef, and carefully paired with delectable sides.

Who knows where the night will go from there. With rum punch still flowing and the energy of the ocean surrounding you, don’t be surprised if you end up dancing in the moonlight before falling asleep under a sky full of stars.

Wake up the next day and hit the hangover cure breakfast before setting sail for another day of snorkeling and adventures. Crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches are on today’s agenda, all leading up to the island that you will call home for the night.

Ragga Caye really is special. Tonight you can opt for a bed in a newly built beach hut, or even a private over-water cabana. Given how perfect the nights are here, it was hard to turn down another opportunity to spend it under the stars, so camping won our vote. With hammocks in the trees and kayaks to take out around the caye, the afternoon will fly by. Of course, the rum punch has been flowing again, so spirits are high (literally), and the group games have begun.

If you’re looking for an experience to remember, the  Raggamuffin  Tours 3 day tour is for you. As an all inclusive trip you don’t have to plan a thing. The crew take care of everything, and go out of their way to make sure you have the best time. As much as I talk about wanting to live on a sailboat but the truth is I’ve never been on a sailboat for longer than a day trip. So when the opportunity came up for a three-day sailing trip through Belize with Raggamuffin tours, I had to find out if the sailor life is the life for me. Spoiler alert: It’s awesome!

Raggamuffin Tours, based out of Caye Caulker, runs a three-day sailing tour from Caye Caulker to Daidringa (never in reverse). There are over 265 Cayes (pronounced keys, meaning island) in the waters of Belize, which means there is an awful lot of exploring to be done.

Raggamuffin tours take you on an epic journey snorkeling, fishing, and island hopping through some of the most beautiful spots in Belize. In this post, I’ll go over what you can expect on a Raggamuffin tour to help prepare and make the most of the tour!

Ps. This post is not sponsored by Raggamuffin Tours. I paid for this tour myself!

How to Book a sailing trip in Belize with Raggamuffin Tours

To find out more information about Raggamuffin tours, read reviews, or book a tour visit their website or the tour office in Caye Caulker . If you knowf the dates you want to take the tour then I recommend booking it in advance, as they do book up especially during peak season (mid-November to mid-May).

In typical fashion, I booked my trip to Belize only a few days before my flight departed. I contacted Raggamuffin right away to request the trip only to find out they were full. However, they advised me to visit the office when I arrived in Caye Caulker, in case someone canceled. It wasn’t until the last minute, literally minutes before they departed, that one person didn’t show up and I was able to take their spot. Thanks, Mark!

The cost of the tour is $400 USD which is all-inclusive. You can pay part of this on credit card but they require you to pay at least $100 in cash. The cost of the tour covers everything, as they supply all food, booze, activities, and accommodations.

View this post on Instagram Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum ? . Anyone got a sailboat and need a first mate? Cause I’m available for hire ?‍♀️ (will work for rum and sunshine). ☀️ A post shared by Lora ?? Solo Adventure Travel (@explorewithlora) on Apr 29, 2019 at 2:14pm PDT

Caye Caulker

The Raffamuffin tour office is in Caye Caulker , Belize, about a 5-minute walk from the main pier. Caye Caulker is a small, laid back island. You can walk or cycle around the entire island, there are no cars there!

Getting to Caye Caulker : Take a taxi to the ferry terminal in Belize city from the international airport. The cost of the taxi is $25 USD, which is a government-set price. At the ferry terminal, you can catch a boat to Caye Caulker which takes about an hour. There are a number of companies that run and the cost of the ferry is $25 USD Return. It is possible to book online in advance,  but the boats are so frequent that you won’t have a problem to show up and catch one.

Where to stay:  The first time I visited Caye Caulker I stayed at  Dirty McNasty’s Party Hostel . This place is exactly as it sounds. If you want a party hostel, it can be a good time, but otherwise, I’d recommend somewhere else. This time around I stayed at  Yuma’s House , which has much more of a chill vibe. It’s still a social hostel, but you can actually sleep there.

Find more accommodation options in Caye Caulker.

Day 1: Departure from Caye Caulker to Rendezvous Caye

The staff will ask you to be at the office at 7:30 am if you have a large-sized bag so they can store it under the boat. If you only have a small-sized backpack then you can take it on the boat with you and show up 8:30 am instead.

They don’t provide breakfast that morning so grab something in Caye Caulker before you go. Right next to the Raggamuffin tours office is a lovely cafe called Ice and Beans. They do great Iced Lattes and bagels!           View this post on Instagram

I was traveling solo but met one of the guys on the same tour while diving, so we boarded the boat together and met our fellow sailing mates.

I expected the crowd to be mostly backpackers, as this was the case in the other boat trips I’ve taken through the San Blas Islands and with TAO in the Philippines. However, Raggamuffin tours is somewhat different.

There were a representative number of backpackers, but also three families on the boat, so the age range was anywhere from 16-50! All the said we all got on well with each other and had a great time. I mean can you really go wrong with endless rum, sunshine, and a sailboat?

Raggamuffin tours from caye caulker

We got to know each other quickly as the crew hands out generous amounts of never-ending rum punch. But if you want to have some time to yourself, there’s space for that too.

There is a catamaran at the front of the sailboat which seems like the prime spot to be, but it’s also the riskiest spots in terms of getting sunburnt. The safest spot is at the back of the boat to where the captain sits, it’s fairly shaded there. You can go to the inside of the sailboat but there isn’t much space to move around. Luggage and supplies take up the rooms and the kitchen is occupied by the chef making amazing food, so you don’t want to disrupt him!

So, what can you do on the sailboat besides drink rum?

Raggamuffin tours take you to some pretty epic snorkeling spots. Belize has the largest second barrier reef in the world, and the coolest part about taking a sailing tour is that you get to stop at several marine reserves that aren’t easily accessible otherwise.

I feel like diving has kind of ruined snorkeling for me, but even these sites impressed me. During our snorkels, we saw spotted eagle rays, stingrays, turtles, and many beautiful and healthy coral reefs. We also saw dolphins from the boat!

snorkeling with sting rays in Belize

One of the snorkeling spots is next to Goff’s Caye, a beautiful little island that you can swim to and explore.

Goffe's Caye island

If you love to fish then this trip is for you. They have hand lines, trawling rods, spin rods and a spear gun on board, and encourage you to fish while we sail through the waters. The crew are also legends at spearfishing and will take groups to try it out during snorkeling stops.

I’m not into fishing, but the people who participated loved this aspect of the trip. Plus, you’ll become everyone’s favorite if you catch something yummy to eat! Whatever you catch become’s the chef’s ‘catch of the day’ special, and gets served to everyone at supper. Don’t worry – there’s still lots of food to eat even if no one catches a fish!

Learn to sail

The crew is happy to teach you some tips about sailing and can definitely use a deck-hand if you want to get involved. The captain of the boat, Jerry, is an awesome friendly guy.

Rendezvous Caye

The first night we slept on Rendezvous Caye, which is not much more than a sandbar and a few palm trees. There aren’t any structures on the island so the crew brings tents for everyone along with sheets. Our group was at the max size which meant some people had to share a tent, but there were a few people that got their own. The tents are easy to set up and the crew is there to help you if you need it.

Rendezous Caye on a Raggamuffin tour

We arrived at the island just before sunset so we all got to watch the beautiful Caribbean sunset from our own private island. After another delicious meal, the booze keeps flowing on the island and we all had a great time. I loved getting to camp on our own island. Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean, waking up to the sun, talk about paradise!

Sunset at Rendezvous Caye Belize

Day 2: Rendezvous Caye to Ragga Caye

The sun will wake you up bright and early for the second day where you will continue the journey from Rendezvous Caye to Ragga Caye. The activities on the second day are much the same as the first. Two stops for snorkeling, plus fishing, lots more rum, and just relaxing on the boat.  Don’t worry about being bored as the three day sailing trip is well-broken up by snorkeling stops and island exploration, so you never feel at sea for too long.

The second day we got to visit Tobacco Caye, where there are actually a couple of restaurants/bars. Everyone was excited to get some cold beer, and there were a few dogs on the island which excited me. After talking to the owners the restaurant I found out that you can actually stay on Tabacco Caye and go diving from there. This seems like it would be a cool experience and I’d love to try sleeping there for a few nights if I go back to Belize.

Visiting Tobacco Caye with Raggamuffin tours

Later that afternoon, you arrive on Ragga Caye where you spend the night. On this island, they have structures set up to sleep in so you don’t have to camp. There are three private bungalows which you can pay extra to reserve, it’s $100 per couple. There are only three cabanas and they book up quickly so make sure you tell them in advance! Across from the bungalows, there is a building with four separate dorm rooms, each with two bunk beds inside it.

ragga caye on a raggamuffin tour

If you don’t want to stay in the dorms you also have the option to set up your tent from the night before anywhere on the island. But the dorms are nice. Actually nicer then some hostels I’ve stayed at, so I was happy to stay there.  No one on my crew bothered to set up a tent the second night. The biggest advantage of getting a private cabana is that you get your own bathroom. The dorm folk share two washrooms and they got gross, fast.

sunset at ragga caye

Ragga Caye also has a kitchen/dining area, so the chef prepares an even more impressive meal for everyone that night, followed by, of course, more rum. One of the aspects I was most impressed about on this tour was the quality of the food that the chef was able to prepare. He had a two-burner stove confined in a tiny sailboat kitchen yet fed us meals with 8 components. Meanwhile, I struggle to make rice at home! 😛

Day 3: Ragga Caye to Dangriga

After having breakfast on Ragga Caye the crew takes you on a small tour around the area. The first stop is a small island full of frigate birds which you can admire from the boat.

From there, we visited a manatee reserve area. I was SO excited about this, but disappointingly, we didn’t see any manatees that day. It is nature after all, and there are never any guarantees.

After the manatee reserve, you have the option to go for a final snorkel followed by a stop at Saltwater Caye. This beautiful island has a sand bar that goes out into the ocean which just looks like perfection. We all floated in the turquoise water soaking up the final piece of paradise!

Salt Water Caye with Raggamuffin Tours

After all the fun in the sun, you sail back to Ragga Caye for a final lunch and then two speedboats come to pick everyone up to take you to Dangriga. The speed boat takes about half an hour.

It doesn’t seem like there’s much going on in Dangriga and no one from my tour stayed there afterward. Most people went to Hopkins or Placencia, which are about one to two hours away, respectively.

There are local buses you can catch about a 15-minute walk from where the boat drops you off, or you can arrange a taxi/shuttle. I didn’t book any transport in advance but as soon as I got off the boat I met a local who was driving to Placencia, and he took me and my friend for the cost of the bus!

Placencia is a nice town and the spot to be if you want to try your luck diving with whale sharks. If you want to go diving in the blue hole , head back to Caye Caulker or San Pedro!

Another place you could head after is San Ignacio, just two hours away and home to some impressive Mayan ruins. Or if you’re on the Central America backpacker trail, head over to Guatemala, a country full adventure!

Tips to make the most of your Raggamuffin Tour

Sea Sickness – No one on my tour was badly affected by seasickness but a couple of people including myself felt nauseous on the first day (could have also been the beers from the night before…). The crew has seasickness tablets on the boat but they made me super sleepy. Another girl on my tour had these motion sickness patches that you place behind your ear and swore by them. Might be worth it if you’re prone to seasickness!

Insurance – No one likes to think about something bad happening on vacation but the truth is they can and it’s important to protect yourself in case of an emergency. If an accident happens and you have to be taken back to the mainland to go to the hospital then it’s not going to be cheap so protect yourself with travel insurance.  I recommend World Nomads as travel insurance for Raggamuffin Tours as they cover a wide range of adventure activities, and are easy to claim with (speaking from experience)!

Extra food/booze – I didn’t bring any snacks with me and at no point did I regret that. The chef does an amazing job of preparing three meals a day as well as mid-afternoon snacks (ceviche). They also have chips and cookies which get handed out throughout the day.

I wouldn’t bring snacks unless there is something specific you want. As for booze, unless you only want to only drink rum then I recommend bringing your other drink of choice. They do supply you with generous amounts of local rum and mix (coke, Fanta, sprite, juice, etc.) but it’s super sweet and I got sick of it after a while. A couple of people on my boat brought beers in a cooler and I was super jealous.

Cash –  You don’t have to bring much cash with you on the trip. There are two islands you visit on the tour where you can buy  drinks and a few souvenirs but that’s it. Bring some cash to tip the guys at the end and for the bus/taxi onwards from Dangriga.

What to bring –  It’s no problem to bring all your bags on the sailboat but the crew will store large-sized bags under the boat, and you won’t be able to access them during the trip. Pack what you need for the three days in a smaller bag which you will have access to. Here’s what I recommend bringing on a Raggamuffin tour:

Packing List for Raggamuffin Tours in Belize

  • Suncreen – Bring so much sunscreen! The Caribbean sun is hot, hot, and hot and I’ve never seen as many people get sunburnt as I have on this trip.  I was constantly applying it and still got burnt. Bring more sunscreen then you think you need!
  • Sarong – great for lying on the beach and protecting you from the sun.
  •  Sun hat & Sunglasses
  • Towel – A towel for after swimming. I recommend the microfiber towels as they pack super light!
  • Moisturizer/after sun
  • Insect repellant
  • Refillable water bottle – I love hydro flask because they keep your drinks cool for 24 hours
  • Reusable Straw – Straws are great for drinking out of coconuts but the plastic ones are terrible for the environment. Take a reusable straw on your trip to cut back on your environmental footprint!
  • Clothing: 1 – 2 pairs of shorts, 2-3 tops, 2 – 3 swimwear,  & 1 pair long sleeve shirt/pants for mosquitos
  • Fins if you want them for snorkeling (masks and snorkel are provided)
  • Sandals and Reef Shoes (the corals can be painful), and rash guard for snorkeling if you want extra protection from the sun
  • Kindle – The sail boat is the perfect place to kick back and relax with a good book. Safe on space and bring a kindle with books downloaded beforehand. Plus the new Kindle is waterproof so you don’t need to worry about getting it wet!
  • A deck of cards for playing games at night
  • Portable battery bank  –  I love this one because it’s small and can charge your phone up to six times!
  • A camera to capture the moment! GoPros are great for snorkeling.
  • An open and adventurous mind!

Budget Belize Island Hopping: Sailing the Barrier Reef with Raggamuffin Tours

Last week, Jamie and I set sail with Raggamuffin Tours (now called Ragga Sailing Adventures ).  This was not your regular day sail.  The adventure included 3 full days of fishing, snorkeling and island-hopping (Caye-hopping technically) along the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world.

It was awesome.

ragamuffin tour belize

We were on a gorgeous catamaran with our own private chef, a captain, and 2 crew members.  We were barefoot the entire time – in fact, our flip-flops were collected as we boarded the boat on day one.  We overnighted on two tiny sandy cayes off the Belize coast – one night in an over-the-water hut waking to the sunrise and the SLAP of a pelican dive-bombing fish just feet from our window.

ragamuffin tour belize

Did I recently come into a great fortune?  Did I win the Belizean lottery?  Nope.  Raggamuffin Tours makes this experience affordable…so while you are not on this boat alone (we shared the large catamaran with a total of 18 fellow passengers:  a couple from Toronto, one from Australia, one from Santa Claus, Indiana, a  Dutch family of four and a mixed group of backpackers traveling through Mexico and Central America from all over the UK), Raggamuffin also makes this experience a once-in-a-lifetime unforgettable adventure.

ragamuffin tour belize

We camped one night falling asleep under a full moon and stirring to the rumble of thunder and stunning gorgeous black morning skies.

ragamuffin tour belize

I followed a manatee as she disappeared through a cut in the barrier reef.  We watched fireworks over our private island in the Coco Plum Range (provided by a rich island neighbor who we were told hails from Dubai and holds EPIC parties).  We ate like kings thanks to Chef Dre – 6 full meals and snacks a day including afternoon fresh ceviche with lobsters we had just caught.

Let me show you a bunch of my pictures of my sail from Caye Caulker to the cayes just off of Dangriga, Belize.

We headed over from San Pedro to Caye Caulker on the 7:30 am water taxi  – to try on our snorkel gear, to pay for the trip and to grab breakfast.

ragamuffin tour belize

Here’s the best map I can find of the cayes.  We would be doing our “big sail” down from Caye Caulker to Rendezvous Caye for our first overnight.  And then on to Tobacco Caye and Ragga Caye in the Coco Plum Range for our 2nd night.  We spent day 3 sailing in close proximity – with a stop by Carrie Bow Caye, STUNNING Southwater Caye, and a manatee watch.  All hugging the reef.

ragamuffin tour belize

Each day we did 2 snorkel stops – not a boat in sight.

We stopped at Goff’s Caye off of Belize City.

ragamuffin tour belize

And at the end of the day Rendezvous Caye – where we put up our tents (with a HEAVY assist from our crew Mark and Dane), readied our provided sleeping pads and sheets and lined the picnic tables for a HUGE dinner on the dock underneath the stars…

ragamuffin tour belize

We woke up to darkening skies…and a huge breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, fry jacks, yogurt, granola, and coffee.

The resident ospreys found their own eats.

ragamuffin tour belize

The rain didn’t come down until we boarded the boat – just about 20 minutes.  The rest of our trip was on again, off again sun.  While that may seem disappointing it was not.  Day 3 was a full day of constantly BLAZING sunshine.  I’m not sure my skin – even slathered in 30SPF could have taken that for the whole trip!

Plus…how pretty is this?

Rendezvous Caye

Bye Rendezvous!

ragamuffin tour belize

More snorkeling and then an hour on Tobacco Caye – the “busiest” of all the cayes.  A few Fishermen and their families live there – and there are two or three tiny hotels/resorts.  A small bar and shop.

Conch shell sea walls built up over many years…

Conch Shells on Tobacco Caye

I sailed with Raggamuffin almost 6 years ago – on this very same boat – and you can see the shells back then in this picture.

They’ve built a little dock bar since.

ragamuffin tour belize

And added lots of outside art around the island.

Painting Tobacco Caye

There was trolling fishing off the back (2 mackerel caught and prepared for dinner)…there were spearfishing lessons.

ragamuffin tour belize

And then a crazy beautiful private Ragga Caye with a very comfortable bunkhouse.

ragamuffin tour belize

Private cabanas you can rent. (You can see this peach one off to the side)

ragamuffin tour belize

A huge dining area and hang out spot with internet…

ragamuffin tour belize

I could EASILY spend a few weeks here with a few dozen books.  And I’m going to leave it there…because me blabbing on and on about the details doesn’t describe how amazing this trip is…

Losing track of the mangroved cayes we passed.  Waving to the odd lobster fishing boat and then the reef all to ourselves.

ragamuffin tour belize

Ocean in every shade of blue, green and purple that you can imagine.  And some colors that I didn’t know existed.

Belize is magic.  And shocks me with her beauty all the time.

Now let’s get down to brass tacks.

Things to definitely bring on this trip:

  • Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock – do not mess around with SPF 8s – this is the time for 50+
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Charged battery for Devices like Kindle and/or Phone
  • Clothes/Undergarments to change into at end of the day – while it might seem romantic living in a bikini for 3 days it is…not
  • Baby Wipes/Cleansing Wipes

Things not critical but great to have:

  • Small dry bag – to keep on deck easily clipped to something so it doesn’t fly away and to bring your camera/a cover-up to the tiny cayes that you can swim to
  • Solar Lamp (for camping – our tent was glowing.  Only get if you will use for something else! )
  • A compact quick-dry towel for shower use

Things we didn’t need:

  • Your own snorkel gear – it’s all provided
  • Underwater Camera – I’m going to stick to my guns and say that 1. unless you are a pro, it is not worth taking underwater photos – when are you ever going to look at a photo of coral when you get home?  2. as you fumble with your camera…or swim behind your Go-Pro more focused on it than the turtle/manatee/dolphin, you get in your own way + everyone else’s and miss the main attraction

And a quick note about personal space.  You are on the boat during the day – from about 8 or 9am to 4 or 5pm with people.  We had plenty of room – in fact, the boat has three different levels and the front hammock – to lounge, sit, move about, sun and read and nap.  IF you need to be alone for most of the day, this is not the trip for you.  I am an introvert to be sure and I could not do a week on a boat – but this 2 night, 3 day trip is perfect for me.

Was it a big “party boat”?  Not really.  The crew and the instructions we received before the sail made it quite clear that we should be mindful of our fellow guests.  Rum punch was served in the afternoon –  usually after all snorkeling was finished.  We nicknamed our boat the “Ragga-mullet” after the infamous 80s/90s hair style.  The trip tended to be a party in the back, business (boat business like reading, napping, snoozing) in the front.

Book yourself a few days “off” (sailing is SOOO stressful!) when you get off the boat.  We did.  At the GORGEOUS Lodge of Jaguar Reef in Hopkins .  But more about that in a few days.

For more information on our Raggamuffin Sail Boat tour – see the website .  I HIGHLY recommend it.

I first learned about the 3 day/2 night sailing trip with Raggamuffin Tours in Belize, when I considered it my next destination. I heard great things about it, and this small Central American country was one of the destinations we considered for our next winter getaway. That’s when I came across an article from one of my favorite travel bloggers, who went on that trip and loved it.

Island hopping in Belize, snorkeling in the 2nd best coral reef in the world and camping on a tiny uninhabited island were just a few of the highlights. It sounded fun and adventurous, and we were sold on the idea pretty quickly. Ultimately, we built our entire Belize trip around the 3 day sailing adventure with Raggamuffin Tours.

If I could suggest one thing you do while on Caye Caulker , assuming you can spare 3 days, is to book that trip immediately. It was different, it was adventurous and one of the best travel experiences we’ve had for many reasons.

Why you should sail with Raggamuffin Tours in Belize

Belize is home to the 2nd best coral reef in the world, which means you will experience some of the most beautiful marine life. Snorkeling was the best I’ve ever experienced. You will also have a chance to catch your next meal, try spearfishing and go hunting for conch shells.

This is not by any means a luxury sailing trip. You will sleep in a tent, flush the toilet with a bucket of water and will not get a real shower for 3 days. Some might say these are inconveniences, but I say sounds awesome, so bring on the adventure. Because seriously, how often do you get to island hop off the coast of Belize, pitch a tent on an uninhabited island and wake up to the sound of the waves.

Last but not least, it’s the crew. The 4 guys on the boat : Kevin, Chris, Ellio and Linthon. One of them was the chef, who prepared amazing meals throughout the entire trip. They’re fun and charismatic, yet the most professional bunch of guys. They kept us laughing and they kept us safe. A great example : the bottomless rum punches did not come out until we were done snorkeling for the day, which I think was a pretty smart move.

3 days with Raggamuffin Tours, Belize

We gathered early in the morning at the Raggamuffin Tours office to drop off our bags, then headed across the street for breakfast, Meanwhile the crew got busy making last preparation before the trip. After an hour or so we were ready to board Ragga Empress, a large white catamaran, that we would call home for the next 3 days. First things first: we were asked to lose our shoes, and we wouldn’t see them until the end of the trip. Not that we would need them, as our days would be spent between the boat, water and sand.

The spacious boat was perfect for our group of 20 and it never felt crowded with plenty of room for everyone to find a favorite spot.

ragamuffin tour belize

After a couple of hours of sailing to the sound of Reggae tunes and snacking on fresh fruit, we made our first snorkeling stop. The guys got in the water with us, and led us to some amazing spots, while pointing out the fish we were seeing. They are really knowledgeable about the wildlife and the area. The water was crystal clear, the reef beautiful and the marine life best I’ve seen so far.

ragamuffin tour belize

A couple of guys spent some time in the back of the boat with the fishing rods, and managed to catch a giant barracuda. Linthon pretty quickly turned it into fresh and delicious ceviche.

fishing during sailing trip with Raggamuffin Tours Belize

We made a quick stop at the picturesque Goff’s Caye. Belize is home to approximately 450 of cayes. Some are bigger and quite busy like Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, but most of them are tiny pieces of sand scattered across the Belize Barrier Reef. They are pretty close to what you would imagine as a deserted island.

Goff's Caye stop with Raggamuffin Tours, Belize

At the end of the day we arrived at Randezvous Caye , which was our first overnight stop. A tiny strip of sand, with a few huts and not much more. The island, even though uninhabited, does have some facilities ( like the toilet ), and there’s a caretaker there as well. We got a quick tutorial on how to pitch the tent, which were our sleeping quarters for the night. And most importantly how to flush the toilet with the bucket of water from the ocean. Real surviving skills 🙂

Randezvous Caye with Raggamuffin Tours Belize

Our day started early, with most of us waking up at sunrise. Not sure if it was the sun peaking through the tent or the back pain from sleeping on a thin mat 🙂 But we sure woke up in paradise. After breakfast, we got aboard Ragga Empress, said goodbye to Randezvous Caye and were on our way. After morning snorkeling, we made a quick stop at Tobacco Caye, a cute little island with the population of just 30 people. Funny how big it seemed compared to Randezvous Caye.

We stopped at the only bar on the island for a cold beer, which was a good change from the rum punches flowing on the boat. Shortly after, while walking around the island, I discovered that there were about 10 puppies running around. I’m pretty sure this is what heaven looks like.

ragamuffin tour belize

In the afternoon we made it to Ragga Caye, another slice of paradise, where we would spend our second night. This night you have an option of repeating your night in a tent or upgrading your sleeping arrangements. There are a few cabanas on the water ( for an extra charge ) or dorm rooms ( free ). We chose the dorm room, and it felt quite luxurious compared to the night in the tent.

Ragga Caye during 3 day sailing trip with Raggamuffin Tours in Belize

On our last day after another amazing breakfast feast ( thank you Linthon ), we went out for some bird watching and manatee spotting.

ragamuffin tour belize

And just because time flies when you’re having fun, the trip came to an end and it was time to part ways. However, we didn’t say goodbye, because as Kevin said : ” we don’t say goodbye, we say see you later “. I sure hope so, because this is a trip I would repeat in a heartbeat.

ragamuffin tour belize

Things you should know about

How much does it cost .

The cost is $ 450 per person . Besides all the fun of sailing for 3 days, the price includes all the snorkeling/fishing/camping equipment, food and drinks. There is always plenty of food, fresh fruit, snacks and what seemed like gallons of rum punch.

The price increases for trips that take place during Holiday season ( December 21 – January 11 ).

If you can’t go on the 3 day trip, Raggamuffin Tours also offers full day snorkeling excursions and sunset sailing trips. Check out their website for more information.

Where do you go?

The trip starts in Caye Caulker and ends in Dangriga. There is no option of returning to Caye Caulker on the boat for safety reasons. The day before the trip, there is a “meeting” at their office in Caye Caulker, when you can learn more about what to expect on the trip. It’s not required to show up, but it’s nice to get a bit more information what to bring and meet the people who you will spend the next 3 days with.

Raggamuffin Tours Belize office

On the 3rd day, when you leave Ragga Caye, you get on a speedy boat for a BUMPY ride to Dangriga. A little piece of advice: don’t sit up front and try to sit on something soft. From Dangriga you can go to several places, depending on your interest. If you want to check out a new part of Belize, Hopkins and Placencia are nearby. You can also head back to Caye Caulker.

PRO TIP : Expect a lot of taxi drivers harassing you the second you get off the boat, and some of them are pretty aggressive. For that reason, it would be best to have your transport pre-arranged. If you plan on taking a bus, do not let them try to convince you the bus already left and the next one is not until a few hours later. It’s their classic line to trick you into taking the taxi, and taxis in Belize are EXPENSIVE.

Things you should pack

  • a duffel bag to pack all the stuff you will need for the 3 days. You will be asked to bring a small bag on board, because the big bags are stored away and not accessible until you leave Ragga Caye.
  • anytime you are on a boat, and have any sort of electronics, bringing a dry bag is a good idea. I’ve been using Earth Pak Waterproof Dry Bag to keep my camera and phone from getting wet.
  • camera – there will be plenty of amazing photo opportunities and moments to capture during the 3 day sailing trip with Raggamuffin Tours in Belize, so bringing a great camera is a must. What you need is a camera that takes excellent pictures, is light weight and easy to travel with. This Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless ticks off all the boxes and even though it’s been around for a few years, it’s still one of the best travel cameras. The perfect combination of quality, size and price.
  • bring a Go Pro or another underwater camera. The reef in Belize is unbelievable and you will want to capture what you see underwater.
  • travel pillow – request an extra mat for sleeping in the tent the first night and bring a travel pillow if you really need one ( they don’t provide them ). You can also use something you have with you as a padding ( i.e. towel, clothes etc ).
  • flashlight and LOTS of reef safe sunscreen

Greetings aga it me chef linthon thanks for you wonderful words.hope to see you back in belize

Great to hear from you Linthon! We would love to come back, we have such great memories from Belize, especially the sailing trip!

' src=

Did you still book a hotel/place to stay while you were on this sailing trip? Where did you store your bags if not?

We stayed in Caye Caulker prior the trip ( that’s where the boat is leaving from ) and in Placencia after. We made sure to take a smaller bag, since we weren’t coming back to Caye Caulker and had no way of storing it there. But a few people on our trip were heading back to Caye Caylker and left their big suitcases in the hotel for 3 nights. So if that’s definitely an option. Most hotels will be happy to store it for you if you ask.

“I’m on a 3 day sailing tour with Raggamuffin and after one hour I already know that this is the best experience I will have in Belize. Think a catamaran, the sun, a cool group of travelers and crazy crew, beautiful blue water, dolphins, snorkeling, Dancehall songs, endless glasses of rum punch, camping on deserted islands… It’s such an unforgettable adventure!”

To understand this vibe, you HAVE to listen to this song while checking out this must must must do. MUST DO. Trust me!

Where to start and where to end to describe this great journey? It’s going to be some story. Raggamuffin has put together this unique 3 day adventure to access the more remote and inaccessible parts of Belize’s reef. The water is always calm and super blue as they remain in the inner reef.

The tour starts from Caye Caulker and finishes in Dangriga, from where you can easily take a bus towards your next adventure. The trip is designed as an island hopping adventure for all those want to experience this uninhabited Caribbean paradise. You will spend the night on beautiful Rendezvous Caye and Ragga Caye whilst visiting English Caye, Tobacco Caye and South Water Caye. The vibe on the boat is amazing. Dancehall music, an hilarious crew, unlimited rum punch… I miss it.

During the day the sailboat cruises through Belize’s crystal clear waters and picture postcard scenery whilst stopping to snorkel at least twice each day. We took our drone – check out the pictures! Also cool: fishing is an additional element to the trip. They carry hand lines, trawling rods, spin rods and a spear gun. During the evening, the cook will prepare the catch of the day!

Rendezvous Caye is nothing more than a strip of sand and some palmtrees. It’s paradise! Here, you put your tent up right at the sand next to the ocean. How amazing is this? There is a non camping option the second night (on Ragga Caye) – next to camping you can stay in the simple dorm or book an over the water cabana (which we did!). Waking up here… No words.

The food is a pleasant surprise as they carry a chef on board the trip! In season they provide lobster and conch and throughout the year shrimp and obviously there is plenty of fish. For those who do not eat fish they can provide chicken and for vegetarians and those who are gluten intolerant they also have excellent menus – do not worry!

Good to know: The trip includes all taxes plus snorkeling and fishing equipment equipment, camping gear, marine reserve and island fees and last but not least food and (alcoholic) beverages! Believe me, it’s absolutely worth it. It’s by far the best experience I’ve had in Belize!

COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT is having a direct socioeconomic impact on the community by diversifying, donating, or employing locals. Community Empowerment grows community leaders, is change leading, bold, and entrepreneurial.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP is protecting the environment for those after you by implementing conservation and sustainable practices. It is committing to the protection and responsible use of the surroundings for future enjoyment.

ECOLOGICAL CONNECTION is immersion and engagement with land, water, flora or fauna in the environment. This is disconnecting to reconnect all while being responsible and conscious of the impact that is being made.

CROSS-CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT is having a direct interaction with the culture you are visiting. You are learning from them, whether it be textile skills, about their history, or staying with a local family in a homestay. Cross-cultural engagement with another culture will have a lasting impact long after a trip.

There is no better way to experience the Caribbean Sea than by sailboat – combine this with deserted island accommodation on the largest growing barrier reef in the world and you have the Raggamuffin Overnight Sailing Trip in Belize. Raggamuffin was started by a Caye Caulker local who saw an opportunity to utilize his many years of sailing experience in a growing tourism industry. The company operates with a laid-back brand that is very much in island mode. This three-day experience is a great way to eat local and engage with the captain and crew of the boat. Part of the attraction to this ecotourism experience in Belize is the cross-cultural connection you’ll get by spending so much time with true locals while simultaneously connecting with the oceanic integrity of the Caribbean. Enjoy snorkelling twice each day in different locations with the option to also snorkel off private islands. You can also choose to go fishing off the boat while at sea, siesta in hammocks, and eat fresh catch.

En route to island #1

Belize Barrier Reef

Departing from Caye Caulker on the three-day sailing experience, you’ll set sail towards the Belize Barrier Reef, suntanning on the deck of the boat and taking in the fresh Caribbean air. Your crew is authentically local and true rasta men serve up some of the best food you’ll have in Belize. Fresh fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans are complemented with cocktails and drinks. Cuisine in Belize is highly underrated but it is some of the best food in Central America. Keep an eye out for visiting dolphins swimming next to the boat – this part of the ocean is truly alive and has some of the healthiest reefs and waters in the Caribbean. You’ll stop at snorkelling spot #1 for the trip. This is your chance to get up close and personal with the sea life while keeping a safe distance and not touching anything. Setting sail again towards your private island, relax with a book and tunes on the net at the bow of the boat until eventually, you arrive at Rendezvous Caye – your first private island of the journey. Camp is set up here for the night in tents with sleeping mats that Raggamuffin provides. There are a few huts here for the cruise ship passengers that visit during the day but not to worry, they’ll be all gone by the time you arrive so you can call it your own private island for the night. The crew will cook up another amazing feast with drinks and the undisturbed night sky will be yours to enjoy.

Our island camping location for night 1

Waking up to the waves on the beach, you can take an optional ‘shower’ in the ocean before eating and setting off on more activities. Another day in paradise is complimented by more snorkelling and fishing, seemingly bottomless meals and beverages, and time spent lying in the sun. This experience is truly connecting with the environment with no option to plug-in. You’ll make your way to newly acquired Raga Caye. This is a new stop on the tour that takes travellers to another private island, but this time with the option to stay in the ‘Ragga Dormitories’ which have four bunks in a room. For an extra $100US / night, you can upgrade to one of three over-water bungalows with ensuite bathrooms and private verandahs. The hammocks are always available for anyone to use and provide a perfect spot for siestas after a big day at sea.

Islands in the distance

The third day is spent much like the others except after leaving Ragga Caye, you’ll head for mainland Belize to end at Dangriga (the trip previously ended in Placencia). From here you can catch a bus to almost anywhere you’d like in Belize. We went to Hopkins for a night before heading to Punta Gorda and taking a boat to Guatemala.

Travelling notes from Raggamuffin:

Placencia – buses depart 4.30pm and 6.15pm (no 4.30pm departure on Sundays). This journey takes 2 hours.

Hopkins – buses depart at 5pm. This journey takes 1 hour.

Belize City – buses depart 4.30pm and 5.30pm. This journey takes 2.5 hours.

Cayo and San Ignacio (or even into Guatemala) – get the Belize City bus and change at Belmopan for the bus marked Benque Veijo. (2 hour journey).

Caye Caulker – bus to Belize City and either Ocean Ferry or San Pedro Belize Express water taxis. Please note, passengers will not be able to make the last boat back to Caye Caulker that same night if they take the bus.

This Is One of the Most Kickass Sailing Tours in Belize

Interested in sailing tours in belize.

Imagine the warm Caribbean sun on your face and a cool breeze in the air as you sail through one of the most mesmerizing places on the entire planet.

Ragamuffin Tours has worked hard to put together the ultimate Belize sailing tour. It starts at Caye Caulker in northern Belize and finishes in the colorful town of Dangriga on the southeastern coast. For three days, you’ll be sailing through some of the most majestic parts of the Belize Barrier Reef , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day one begins with a morning departure from the lovely island of Caye Caulker which can be easily reached by water taxi or a short flight from Belize City on the mainland or Ambergris Caye. From there, the sailing adventure will include traversing through picture postcard perfect scenery with at least two stops along the way to enjoy some snorkeling every day. The crystal clear waters and abundance of marine life make scuba diving here an ideal way to see large schools of fish, rays, sharks, five different species of sea turtles, and even the occasional manatee or dolphin.

And for anglers, there will also be ample opportunities to work on your Grand Slam as several species of gamefish are easy to find in this area of the reef. The boat comes with trawling rods, spin rods, hand lines, and spear guns. Whether you want to fish from the boat or head to shore to try spin casting or spearfishing, there are lots of chances to catch fish on this tour.

Day one ends at the well-named Rendevouz Caye, an uninhabited island equipped with very simple thatched-roof camping shelters. For travelers with more upscale needs, there are luxury accommodations also available at the nearby Ragga Caye. In the evening, avid snorkelers can go for one last expedition in the waters surrounding the island.

Day two is much the same as day one – sailing through turquoise waters and enjoying lots of fishing and/or snorkeling. Remember, anything you catch can be prepared fresh to order by the onboard chef! Day three includes stopping by a manatee sanctuary before heading to port in Dangriga.

Once back on dry land in Dangriga, you can rely on Barefoot Rentals and Services for all your travel needs. Barefoot has a full fleet of cars , golf carts, and motorbikes that are ideal for exploring Belize. Barefoot Rentals and Services also offers door-to-door shuttle service to and from any location in the country.

Sail Belize’s Great Barrier Reef with Raggamuffin Tours

ragamuffin tour belize

Raggamuffin Tours – Caye Caulker’s best tour operator company has put together an amazing adventure to access the more remote and inaccessible parts of Belize’s reef that showcases some of  the best snorkeling and fishing areas. The tour takes the route from Caye Caulker and finishes in Placencia (the tour is never undertaken in reverse – however there is the opportunity to travel back with the boat for those who are direction-ally challenged), remaining in the inner reef to allow for calm sailing waters.

The trip is designed as an island hopping adventure for all those want to experience Belize’s uninhabited Caribbean paradise. The adventure will take place over a period of three days and passengers will spend the night on beautiful Rendezvous Caye and Tobacco Cayes whilst visiting Goffs Caye or English Caye and South Water Caye.

During the day the sailboat will gently cruise through Belize’s crystal clear waters and picture postcard scenery whilst stopping to snorkel at least twice each day. Snorkeling opportunities can be maximized by those who are passionate snorkelers by additionally snorkeling around Rendezvous Caye and Tobacco Caye the afternoon they arrive and the morning before they depart.

Fishing is also an additional element to the trip. Raggamuffin Tours carry with them hand lines, trawling rods, spin rods and a spear gun. For those passengers whose passion it is for fishing, this is an ideal opportunity to trawl off the boats, spin cast on the islands and to experience spear fishing! For fly fisherman, although whilst they are on the boat there is no way of accessing the flats, whilst on Rendezvous and Tobacco Caye the flats off these islands are abundant! (They do not provide fly fishing equipment for the trip).

During the evenings the crew will put together a camp fire and often toast marshmallows and watch the stars. The trip is a simple camping trip with Raggamuffin supplying all camping equipment with mats, sheets and pillows being provided. Passengers sleep in the units that they travel in ie on average 2 persons to each tent to allow for privacy. All sailboats are equipped with marine toilets.

For the smaller boats, additional fresh water is carried for the passengers to bathe. Of course, on Tobacco Caye on the second night, they provide shower and bathroom facilities! The water supply on Tobacco Caye is rainwater.

For many the quality of the food on the trip is a pleasant surprise! In season they will be providing lobster and conch and throughout the year shrimp and obviously there is plenty of fish. For those who do not eat fish they can provide chicken and for vegetarians the guides also make provisions – do not worry!

The trip includes all snorkeling equipment, camping gear and food and beverages. The cost of this package is $350US per person. Typically there are no group discounts. Trips depart regularly throughout the year on Tuesdays and Fridays.
