11 Day Best of Botswana Photo Safari
Embark on an unforgettable 11-day journey through the heart of Botswana, exploring its most captivating and diverse wildlife habitats. This exclusive Best of Botswana Photo Safari begins in the vibrant town of Kasane and culminates in the charming city of Maun. Throughout this immersive adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to discover the natural wonders of The Chobe, the Okavango Delta, and The Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
The expedition commences at the illustrious Pangolin Chobe Hotel, a luxurious vantage point perched high above the picturesque Chobe River. Here, you can bask in the breathtaking views while enjoying all the comforts and amenities that this award-winning establishment has to offer. On the third day, an optional day trip to the iconic Victoria Falls awaits, adding an extra layer of wonder to your journey.
Following your Chobe experience, you’ll board a plane bound for the mesmerizing Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its pristine landscapes and rich wildlife. Your next stop is Bushman Plains, where you’ll engage in more land-based photography, capturing the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this unique ecosystem.
The grand finale of your adventure takes place in the untamed wilderness of the Central Kalahari, where you’ll spend three additional nights at Dinaka. This secluded paradise offers an exceptional opportunity to photograph rarer and less-photographed species during hide sessions. Furthermore, you’ll have the privilege of embarking on game drives within a private concession, providing you with an intimate and unspoiled connection to the wildlife of the region.
This Best of Botswana Photo Safari is a remarkable journey that not only showcases the breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary wildlife of Botswana but also provides you with the opportunity to capture these moments and create lasting memories through your camera lens. It’s an immersive experience that will leave you with a profound appreciation for the natural wonders of this remarkable African nation.
Your adventure commences as you touch down at Kasane International Airport, having journeyed from Johannesburg. As you disembark, a friendly and knowledgeable member of the Pangolin Team awaits to extend a warm welcome and assist you in settling into your Botswana experience.
From the airport, a short transfer will convey you to the magnificent Pangolin Chobe Hotel, an award-winning establishment that sits majestically on a plateau overlooking The Chobe River and the captivating Caprivi floodplains. Here, you'll check in, receive your room assignment, and immediately be immersed in the serene and pristine surroundings.
Upon your arrival, you'll be introduced to your indispensable companion for the duration of your stay – the Pangolin Photo Host. This expert guide is your key to unlocking the secrets of Chobe's remarkable wildlife and ensuring that your photographic journey is both productive and educational.
For those who have yet to acquire their own camera equipment or telephoto lenses, Pangolin thoughtfully offers loaner gear, free of charge, for the entire duration of your stay. Additionally, memory cards are made available to accommodate the countless moments you'll want to capture during your time at the Pangolin Chobe Hotel.
It's important to note that for novice photographers seeking a more comprehensive experience, the Chobe, Delta, and Kalahari Hosted Photo Safari, scheduled on set departure dates, may be an ideal choice. This option not only provides you with cameras but also ensures continuous photography guidance throughout the entire journey.
The Chobe River, surrounding the hotel, unveils a cornucopia of subject matter that evolves with the seasons. During the African Summer months, spanning from November to April, you'll find yourself in the midst of a thriving birding spectacle. Migratory bird species make their annual return, turning the area into a vibrant avian paradise. At this time, the landscape is painted in lush green hues, and adorable baby animals add a dose of charm to your photographic subjects.
As the African Winter months roll around, from May to October, the water sources inland begin to dwindle, prompting larger congregations of elephants to frequent the river. These majestic pachyderms are a sight to behold as they gather for their daily rituals.
Regardless of the specific time you choose for your safari, The Chobe always offers an abundance of photographic opportunities, ensuring that your journey begins with a bang and a memory card filled with "keepers."
In between your exhilarating game activities, you'll also have the opportunity to participate in hosted image review and group editing sessions. To maximize these sessions, it's advisable to bring your own laptop with the latest version of an editing program installed. Adobe Lightroom is the software of choice, and Pangolin provides a free online course to familiarize you with its functions if you're not already acquainted with it.
Your second day dawns with a promise of more breathtaking photography opportunities in the Chobe region. Engage in a variety of land and water-based activities that will allow you to immerse yourself in the diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes surrounding The Chobe River.
You'll be capturing images of iconic African species, from the awe-inspiring elephants and powerful buffalo to the graceful hippos, stealthy crocodiles, and elegant antelope. Under the expert guidance of your Pangolin Photo Host, you'll have the opportunity to refine your photography skills, learning how to frame the perfect shot, make use of lighting, and capture the essence of the wilderness.
In between these activities, group image review and editing sessions provide you with an invaluable chance to review and enhance your photographs, with your fellow enthusiasts. These collaborative sessions can be both instructive and inspiring as you learn from one another's perspectives.
On the third day of your stay, you have an enticing option to embark on a day trip to one of the world's most astonishing natural wonders, Victoria Falls. This awe-inspiring spectacle of nature beckons you to experience its grandeur and majesty.
Your day begins with a comfortable and air-conditioned minivan ride, leading you across the border into Zimbabwe. There, you'll be captivated by the breathtaking vistas of Victoria Falls, one of the world's seven natural wonders. The morning adventure allows you to explore the falls, marvel at their immense power, and truly absorb their magnificence.
As your appetite grows, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous lunch at one of the recommended dining establishments. Following your meal, consider taking to the skies with an optional helicopter flight. This thrilling experience provides you with a bird's-eye view of the falls and their surroundings, an unforgettable perspective.
Don't forget to explore the craft stalls, where you can browse and shop for unique souvenirs and mementos. Your Victoria Falls excursion promises a day filled with awe and wonder, and you'll return to Botswana in the afternoon, crossing the border once more.
For those who choose not to visit Victoria Falls or have already experienced its splendor, your day will be dedicated to the same morning and afternoon photo safaris as the previous days. The flexibility in your itinerary ensures that you can tailor your experience to suit your personal preferences and desires.
Day four sees you continuing your stay at the luxurious and comfortable Pangolin Chobe Hotel. This elegant establishment offers not only remarkable wildlife experiences but also all-inclusive meals and beverages, encompassing soft drinks and alcoholic options throughout your entire itinerary.
Your room, complete with en-suite facilities, air conditioning, and a choice of double or twin beds, provides a comfortable and welcoming retreat. There's plenty of storage space, and an abundance of plug points ensures that you can keep all your devices charged and ready to capture the moments that lie ahead.
After your morning activity, it will be time to bid adieu to the magnificent Chobe region. You'll be transferred back to Kasane Airport, where you'll board a charter flight to embark on the next thrilling phase of your Best of Botswana Photo Safari. These charter flights usually depart around 11 am, setting the stage for your journey into the renowned Okavango Delta
Your journey continues as you arrive in the remarkable Okavango Delta via a charter flight. This marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in your photography adventure. The Okavango Delta is celebrated for its pristine landscapes and rich biodiversity, offering a unique and diverse ecosystem for exploration. Your journey through the wonders of Botswana enters a new realm of natural beauty and wildlife encounters.
Arrive at either Shinde or Kanana camps in the Okavango Delta, both owned and operated by Ker and Downey Botswana. These private concessions offer the privilege of off-roading for unique wildlife sightings and conducting night drives.
The concessions are similar in size, providing ample space for excellent game viewing from game viewer vehicles. Each camp offers 8 rooms and follows a policy of no more than four guests per game viewer. Game viewer vehicles are equipped with beanbag mounts and deep trays in front of each seat, ensuring a secure place for your camera while on drives.
The safari guides have been extensively trained to understand the specific needs of wildlife photographers, including optimal positioning for the right light and anticipation of animal movements and behaviors.
Immerse yourself in the extraordinary wildlife photography opportunities provided by the Shinde or Kanana concessions.
Both concessions have thriving populations of big cats, including several resident lion prides. Regular sightings of elusive leopards, wild dogs, and cheetahs offer thrilling photographic moments. Capture iconic Okavango Delta species, such as red lechwe grazing in shallow waterways, alongside an abundance of other plains game like giraffes, zebras, kudus, waterbucks, and impressive buffalo.
Your game drives, led by expert guides, focus on positioning for the best light and anticipating animal behavior to optimize your photographic opportunities.
Continue your wildlife photography journey in the private concessions of Shinde or Kanana. Game drives offer opportunities for off-roading and in-depth exploration, providing access to special wildlife moments. Benefit from the expertise of your guides as they help you position for ideal lighting conditions and predict animal behavior.
Delve deeper into the private concessions of Shinde or Kanana, taking advantage of off-roading capabilities. Explore the savannah landscapes and track down remarkable wildlife moments, ensuring unique photographic opportunities.
Enjoy night drives, which unveil the nocturnal world of the Okavango Delta, offering a chance to capture elusive nocturnal creatures under the starry skies.
Depending on water levels during your time of travel, embark on an optional mokoro trip, a traditional dugout canoe experience.
Glide along the meandering water channels, observing aquatic and avian life unique to the Okavango Delta. This serene experience adds diversity to your photographic portfolio and provides a contrast to terrestrial wildlife encounters.
During this segment of the safari, there is no dedicated Pangolin Photo Host in residence, as the focus shifts toward providing a wildlife photography holiday experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Okavango Delta and capture its remarkable wildlife through your lens.
You will be in the capable hands of experienced guides and within the pristine wilderness of Botswana's private concessions.
Arrival at Dinaka Camp in the Kalahari After an exciting and wildlife-filled experience in The Chobe and Okavango Delta, your safari transitions into a more relaxed environment in the Kalahari Desert.
The Kalahari is characterized by its arid nature, where animals tend to congregate around waterholes, creating perfect opportunities for hide photography. Dinaka Camp, your chosen partner in the Kalahari, is located on a private reserve bordering the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
The landscape here is distinct from the previous destinations, with slightly denser and thornier bush and a unique mix of wildlife species adapted to the desert ecosystem. Expect to encounter animals like oryx, springbok, brown hyenas, black-maned lions, black-backed jackals, and cheetahs. Dinaka Camp, owned and managed by Ker and Downey, is known for its luxury and serves as a well-deserved haven for relaxation at this stage of your journey.
The communal areas of the camp are exceptional, and the spacious rooms feature private verandas overlooking a popular waterhole. Game viewer vehicles are equipped with beanbag camera mounts, and a maximum of four guests are allowed per vehicle for game drives.
Embrace the unique environment of the Kalahari and enjoy wildlife photography opportunities.
Dinaka Camp provides access to a sunken "bunker type" waterhole hide, capable of seating up to eight photographers at a time, although typically used by four at a time. From this hide, you'll capture images of animals quenching their thirst at water level right in front of you.
It's a truly special experience to photograph from this hidden vantage point and observe wildlife interactions up close.
Experience the Kalahari from a different perspective with a guided walk through the bush led by resident Bushman guides. Learn about their traditional subsistence way of life, which thrives in this seemingly stark environment.
The walk may culminate in a demonstration of traditional fire-making techniques and storytelling as the sunsets, offering cultural insights. Enjoy flexible timing for game activities, allowing for earlier starts or later finishes to make the most of your time at Dinaka.
Use your downtime by the pool, relax on the deck with a good book, and always keep your camera nearby in case wildlife makes an appearance at the camp's waterhole.
On your final day at Dinaka, prepare for your departure to Maun airport, which serves as an excellent transportation hub.
While this marks the end of your safari, remember that there are opportunities to extend your journey. Daily flights between Maun and destinations like Cape Town and Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, are available. Consider exploring South Africa further by transferring across the border and continuing your adventure at Jaci's Tree Lodge in Madikwe, a wonderful addition to your safari experience.
Your time in the Kalahari allows you to unwind in luxury, capture memorable photographs, and gain insight into the traditional way of life of the local Bushmen. It's the perfect way to conclude your safari adventure.

Botswana Photo Tours
Botswana is renowned as an african photographic safari destination par excellence, offering some of the continents finest wildlife photographic opportunities and some incredible wilderness experiences to boot..
The Kalahari, a vast semi desert area that covers significant parts of southern Africa is centred on Botswana, and it is through these endless sands that the famous Okavango and Chobe rivers run. These river systems truly are the lifeblood of much of the north of Botswana, and it is in these regions that most of our tailor-made safaris and our scheduled Savute & Khwai photo tours operate, focussing on the sizeable populations of large mammals that live here. However, Botswana has a lot more to offer the intrepid wildlife photographer, and our scheduled tour offerings do not neglect the eastern areas of the nation as it is here that hide photography at Mashatu is a major focus and offers a very different set of experiences and photographic opportunities to those of northern Botswana.
As if this wasn’t enough, the country is also one of the safest and most stable nations in Africa, and we look forward to hosting you as we journey through the woodlands, savannas and swamps on an unforgettable Botswana photo safari!

A land of staggering beauty, Botswana has developed a tradition of top-level safari tourism, offering some of the best wildlife safaris you will find. Natural parks and vast private game reserves make up 40% of a fenceless territory, enabling huge herds of game to roam freely in contrasting landscapes of magnificent extremes, from the Kalahari’s desert plains to the Okavango’s lush waterways… Combine this with the natural wonder of the Victoria Falls and with such a diversity of habitats and ecosystems there is a safari for every season.
This is a bucket list destination, especially in summer when the flowering devil's thorns transform the landscape into a yellow carpet, providing exquisite backgrounds in your photographs. This combined with an exceptional guide in Lance, makes this an unforgettable experience. Lance's photographic knowledge and guiding skills together with his friendly nature makes for an amazing experience. His assistance on the game drives ensures that you are able to take magnificent photographs yourself. His knowledge and tuition in post processing software (Lightroom and Photoshop) is exceptional, helping you to get the most from your photographs. Daniel Koen
I have been fortunate to be able to visit Mashatu the land of giants on a photographic trip and what a special place it is. The location, accommodation, mesmerising landscape and abundance of wildlife (many location specific) make this easily one of the best places to visit. To top this all off and really pull it all together in terms of what I hold in high esteem is an extremely knowledgeable guide/naturalist and fellow photographer and this is where Lance shines bright. His ability to read situations is extraordinary. I recall setting ourselves up by a Mashatu tree (one of many) for a female leopard to arrive that had been meandering through the bushes and devils thorn flowers for a fair distance and yes she chose to climb this specific tree and settle down....pure luck maybe regardless it was incredible, and I have many more stories like this with Lance. If you want your trip taken to a really special level then Lance is your go to. Saul Ravkind
I did a three part solo trip to Botswana and Zimbabwe, staying on the Okavango Delta, Chobe and Vic Falls with Lance as my guide. What an experience! Okavango Delta We were at Pom Pom Island for only two nights, but on our few safari drives we saw lechwe, reedbuck, warthogs, elephant, leopards, lions and numerous new bird species for me. We also did a Mokoro (canoe) ride on the River seeing many hippos and elephants. It was a unique experience and I highly recommend Lance as a guide/photographer. Chobe One of my dream trips was to the Chobe River and Victoria Falls. Lance joined me on this trip. Our first cruise along the Chobe river we experienced a herd of elephant swimming across the river right in front of our boat. What a photo opp that was! With Lances help I got some amazing photos, especially of the elephants and also the abundant bird life. Nicola Ann
This is definitely a unique destination, especially in summer when all the yellow devil’s thorns transform the landscape into a yellow carpet. This special time of the year provides unique photos with all kind of animals eating this flowers. The great thing about it is, that all animals look just stunning in this natural beautiful background. With Lance’s expertise you will be able to take the best photos in this unique environment. Furthermore his knowledge and tuition with the post processing software “Lightroom” is exceptional. It will further help to improve your photos. Adriana Peiris
Gill and I were privileged enough to accompany Lance on 3 different photographic safaris and what an absolute pleasure they were!! Not only was he delightful company but his bush and photographic knowledge was brilliant. We both look forward to many more trips with you Lance !! Regards Bruce and Gill Mager. Bruce and Gill Mager
We went to Mashatu in February 2020. It was an amazing trip with the flowers in full bloom. Lance always adds a funny twist to any situation. His photographs are excellent and he is happy helping and imparting his knowledge to his fellow photographers. We wish you all the best in your new venture, and assure you of our support. BOTSWANA: WILDLIFE SPECTACULAR – The photographic wonders of the Okavango and Chobe
November 2025
November 2026
Our Botswana photography tours are understandably popular because this gem of a country in southern Africa is a truly outstanding destination for wildlife photography. The Okavango Delta, the Savuti Channel and Chobe National Park are among the greatest place on the African continent for getting fabulous images that you will treasure forever. We combine them all in an unsurpassed Botswana wildlife photo safari!
Botswana photography tours are also truly notable because this is The place in Africa for photographing African Wild Dogs (also known as Hunting Dogs), something that is a dream encounter for many wildlife photographers. On our specially crafted Botswana wildlife photography itineraries we make a point of seeking out Wild Dogs and spending time with them if we possibly can.
While African Wild Dogs are one of the great highlights of our photo safari, there is much more to see and photograph in this marvellous country. Big cats abound and we are likely to come across Lion, Cheetah and quite possibly Leopard and smaller cats such as Serval and African Wild Cat. African Elephants still roam here in great numbers and antelopes and zebras are numerous.
If you want to extend your African safari holiday we can easily add in a visit to the awesome Victoria Falls, which are situated not far from Kasane, after any of our Botswana photography tours.
BOTSWANA SAFARI
11 days – chobe river, okavango delta, botswana, tour details.
B otswana, a secluded photographic paradise and a marvel of true wilderness in epic proportions.
It’s an ecosystem unlike anything I have ever seen. Inhabited by an incredible diversity of African wildlife including over 500 species of birds, almost 200 species of mammals, and the largest herds of elephants in all of Africa, there is always somewhere to focus your camera. It is one of, if not the most photographic rich locations I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.
Aboard a privately chartered houseboat, we will travel along the Chobe River for three nights photographing this one-of-a-kind ecosystem, and the biodiversity that this precious water provides from eye-level. After an intensive and meticulous scouting trip, last year, we have selected new campsites and accommodations that will provide us with access to the most premier photographic locations Botswana has to offer. Also, our experienced guides specialize in photographic trips have unmatched tracking abilities, and have been trained to maneuver their vehicles for the best lighting and composition.
This Botswana photo safari is perfect for any photographer who has dreamed of experiencing a safari in Africa. I especially recommend this epic adventure any past participants of my Ultimate Africa Tour, it’s time to explore another part of this beautiful continent.

Testimonials.
“I have been privileged to have traveled a fair bit, and have traveled with several photography groups and workshops. Aaron Baggenstos is by far the best at offering a complete wildlife photography travel adventure experience. From pre-trip planning, personal attention, great accommodations specifically with the photographer in mind, to his open warmth and incredible grasp of wildlife and nature photography he is unequaled in my experience. The Botswana adventure was full of diverse photographic opportunities, and with his mentorship there is always a creative angle in reach. We were always out at the very best light and because of that were able to capture the “magic”. He is incredibly talented and so generous in sharing his photographic pearls. He is kind, energetic, young and wise beyond his years.. if you are looking for the best photography experience, Aaron will make it happen.” -7 time Aaron’s Photo Tours Participant
“This was the trip of a lifetime on every level, starting with the first rate accommodations. We were looked after from the moment we landed. As a single woman traveling in Africa, this was supremely important for me. I felt incredibly safe with the guides, drivers, and spotters as well as in the beautiful camps and lodges where we stayed. The Pangolin Voyager
Our floating lodge is actually moored on the Namibian side of the Chobe and is the perfect base for families and groups to charter on an exclusive basis. With 5 cabins the Pangolin Voyager can accommodate up to ten guests.
Pangolin Photo Camps
We have teamed up with a selection of highly reputable safari operators to host our Pangolin Photo Camps throughout Southern and East Africa. This gives us plenty of options to visit them at optimal wildlife photography times.
Never, and I mean never, was so excellent guided!
I loved being in and on the Chobe. The amount of game and birds one gets to see really close up is amazing. I am just a happy snapper who enjoys seeing wildlife but with Guts’ fun instruction in easy to grasp chunks I was surprised how much I learnt and the quality of some of my pics.
We can’t talk more highly of Pangolin and thank them very warmly for a wonderful holiday.
This was an incredible trip. Pangolin arranged everything and deserves top scores for coordinating the logistics.
These guys know what they are doing! We were with Pangolin for 5 days on a recent two stop photo safari. Pangolin handled the Chobe part of the trip in Kasane and on the Pangolin Voyager houseboat and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.
A wonderful experience, since the photo teachers and guide are very very knowledgable. They bring you in the best position to take your pictures, they know their equipment very well, and by experience, they can almost ‘read’ animal behaviour.
The photo boats are incredible, well equipped with all the resources you need to create magical wildlife photography. If you come to the Chobe and don’t do a photo tour with Pangolin you’re missing out!
This is truly the way to do a game drive if visiting Chobe National Park. The people of Pangolin are amazing and turned this game drive into one of the most memorable events in my life!
This was the most memorable activity of our holiday! What a treat to be able to use such wonderful camera equipment, with tuition and a guide, in such an amazing location.
Pangolin Photo Safaris is proud to be the founding partner of a new non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of the most highly trafficked wildlife species on the continent: the African Pangolin.
Through a three-pronged approach of Publicity, Participation and Protection, the NGO works with partners in the tourism, conservation and corporate fields with the aim of increasing worldwide awareness of the species; gathering data to contribute towards much-needed research; and implementing protection and rehabilitation projects on the ground.

Why Botswana is Great for Photo Safaris
10 reasons to go on a botswana photo safari tour.
Heading out on a photo safari tour is a dream for many travelers and photography enthusiasts. If nothing else, a photo safari tour is great if you want to create impressive wildlife photography and improve your skills with a camera. However, they’re also a way to reconnect with nature, visit boast-worthy sites, learn about foreign cultures, and explore unknown countries. Botswana is a great destination for all the above.
If you’re deciding where to go on your photography trip, we’re here to give you all the reasons to go on a Botswana photo safari . It’s an expansive country of motley landscapes filled with a stunning cast of all of Africa’s most iconic wildlife and more. The opportunities for wildlife photographers to hone their craft with a camera whilst collecting a stonking set of images are endless.
If you’re wondering why Botswana is good for a photo safari tour, here are some answers to reel you in!
1. For the wildlife
Botswana is good for photo safaris because it offers a wide range of safari experiences, each with its own unique opportunities for wildlife photography. Some are even world-famous, like the Okavango Delta, one of the most iconic wildlife destinations in the world, or Chobe National Park, which has heaving elephant populations and exciting boat safari experiences. Others are lesser known, like the other worldly annual occurrence of the zebra migration across the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.
Put simply, Botswana photo safaris will offer you some of the best encounters with wildlife a photographer could ask for.
2. For the bird photography
It might not be everyone’s thing, but the birdlife diversity is one of the best reasons to go on a Botswana photo tour.
Botswana is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 580 bird species, including elusive species like Pel’s fishing owl and wattled cranes. The diverse habitats, from marshes to woodlands, provide a rich tapestry for capturing the vibrant plumage and unique behaviors of these avian wonders.
To get the best of Botswana bird photography, visit during wet season when the country hosts an array of migratory birds too.
3. For the Okavango Delta
Why go on a Botswana photo safari? The Okavango Delta, the “Jewel of the Kalahari”. Enough said.
It’s the dream of many wildlife photographers to visit this iconic location and with good reason. One of the world’s largest inland deltas, this unique ecosystem is a haven for a plethora of wildlife species, both big and small. The intricate network of water channels and islands provides a dynamic landscape for photographers to capture the intimate moments of animals as they navigate through the watery labyrinth.
4. For low-impact, eco-friendly safaris
Botswana is also a country where you can enjoy intimate encounters with nature and keep a clean conscience. The country is a pioneering advocate for low-impact, sustainable tourism.
In Botswana, people appreciate that nature is a valuable asset and protecting it is of paramount importance. The country has strict restrictions on how many lodges can be built near nature reserves, how many people can visit safari parks at any given time, and how safaris can approach wildlife encounters, all to reduce overcrowding and minimize the ecological footprint of tourism.
So, you can visit the country, enjoy the wildlife encounters, and rest easy knowing there are strong systems in place to protect areas and the animals that live there.

5. For untouched wilderness
The country’s sustainable practices for tourism means you can experience unspoiled natural beauty on a Botswana photo tour.
Much of Botswana’s wilderness remains unspoiled by mass tourism and development, allowing for healthy populations of wildlife to act as subjects, and pristine landscapes to serve as backdrops.
Also, with access to parks being restricted, you’ll enjoy more exclusive, less crowded, photo safaris and won’t have other safari vehicles cluttering the frame for your photography. These exclusive opportunities enable photographers to get closer to the action and maximize their chances of capturing stunning shots.
6. For the undiscovered gems
All the restrictions around tourism also mean Botswana isn’t a well-trodden tourist destination and there are still corners of the country undiscovered by the masses.
For instance, Tuli Block (the destination for our exclusive wildlife photography Safari in Botswana ) is described by Lonely Planet as ‘Botswana’s best kept secret’. The area has an open, rocky, moon-like climate with great chances to see some of Botswana’s larger species, like lions, leopards, and cheetahs, and incredible birdlife too. It’s a hidden gem for the wildlife photographer, offering all the best of Botswana wildlife.
7. For the culture
One of the best reasons to go on a Botswana photo tour is to learn about the country’s rich tapestry of cultures and vibrant heritage.
Botswana has a broad cast of ethnic groups, indigenous inhabitants, and various tribes, each with their own distinct customs and traditions, many of which depend on a close relationship with nature.
Witnessing the peculiar hunting techniques of the San people, or learning the survival strategies of the Kalahari desert tribes is a unique bonus of Botswana photo safaris. Needless to say, encountering these tribes provides exciting photography opportunities too.
8. For the variety of landscapes
We know, landscapes don’t tend to excite the dedicated wildlife photographer, but you’d be a fool to overlook the spectacular diversity of Botswana’s topography. With the lush greenery of the Okavango Delta’s wetlands juxtaposed against the stark arid beauty of the Kalahari Desert, there are exciting opportunities for landscape photography.
What’s more, this variety of ecosystems, means more variety of wildlife. In the Kalahari Desert, you can find uniquely adapted species like meerkats, Kalahari lions, and brown hyenas.
9. For the Astrophotography
Again, not the first reason to go on a Botswana photo tour you might think of, but who doesn’t love a starry sky?
That’s right, Botswana’s attractions extend beyond daylight hours. The country’s lack of urban light pollution offers photographers an excellent opportunity to capture the celestial wonders of the African night sky.
10. For the opportunity to explore southern Africa
This may seem counter-intuitive, but one of the best reasons to go on a Botswana photo tour is to get out of Botswana.
For those interested in extended travel, Botswana is a prime location to begin a tour of Southern Africa. Sharing borders with Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, Botswana serves as a fantastic starting point or hub from which to explore more of the continent.
For instance, our Botswana photo safari pairs very nicely with our South African photo safari .
Want to Experience the Best of Botswana?
Now you see, when it comes to planning a photo safari, Botswana stands out as a destination. Botswana’s remarkable landscapes, diverse wildlife, and commitment to sustainable tourism make it an ideal destination for photo safari tours.
From the vast expanses of the Okavango Delta to the ethereal beauty of the Kalahari Desert, every corner of this country offers a chance to capture the magic of the African wilderness. What our clients are saying
The careful selection of locations/lodges and the extremely knowledgeable and professional local guide made the trip through parts of Botswana a real highlight. The photographer James Clifford knows the places and positions where the animals can be put in the right light and imparts a lot of interesting information about the nature and behaviour of the animals in this unique environment. I returned home with many great pictures and numerous unique impressions.
The Zambia trip in June 2023 was marked by many great animal encounters and beautiful scenery. I especially remember a pair of leopards, about one year old, who were playing with each other and I even managed to take a picture of the female sailing over the male. Wonderful! Equally impressive, however, were the beautiful morning scenes. Antelopes and even lions presented themselves in the ground fog at sunrise! Once again, Thomas and Hannes took excellent care of us, and the local guides also did a good job. This makes us want to do more!
The photo tour ‘Botswana up close’ exceeded all my expectations. I was able to experience and photograph countless unforgettable moments. Hannes' professional guidance was brilliant. Everything ‘around’ with a super lodge, extremely good safari guides and the cosy group made this trip the perfect experience. Thank you. Can only recommend this to everyone.
It was my first photo trip to Africa. The diverse - and, thanks to the driving skills of the guides, close-up - encounters in the private game reserve were impressive: leopards, cheetahs, lions, hyenas, jackals, elephants, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, monkeys, bee-eaters, eagles, vultures and much more. We also had an excellent photo guide with us in Hannes Lochner, who was able to share a lot of his experiences with us. That makes you want more!
I was able to travel to the south of Botswana with Amazing Views in October 2021. The game reserve in the Tuli Block surprised us with unique sightings. In addition to lions, elephants and a wild cat with its cub, we were able to enjoy several leopard sightings. Playful in the flowering Raintree, having fun with a feather, sneaking up on a prey - nothing was missing. Not forgetting the exciting ‘sessions’ in the Hide. Thank you Thomas and Hannes, it was a pure pleasure to be able to share these experiences with you.
A great trip to my absolute dream area in southern Africa. Nice people, relaxed atmosphere and wonderful and exciting animal sightings. Walking safaris with safe guides and unimagined photographic opportunities. I will never forget spending an afternoon up close to dozens of elephants at the waterhole. Hannes and Thomas are always on hand to help with camera settings and are also happy to discuss problems in camp. Three different destinations, very different but always with infinitely friendly staff who were happy to fulfil our wishes.
Day 1: Arrival to Kasane
After your individual arrival in Kasane, it is only a short transfer to our accommodation. You check in and move into your room. Later in the afternoon, you will meet photographer James Gifford at high tea. You will receive an introduction to various aspects of wildlife photography. Afterwards we set off on our first boat trip on the Chobe River. With a bit of luck we will find the first animals and start photographing. Dinner and overnight in Kasane.
Day 2-3: By boat in Chobe National Park
Chobe is one of Africa’s most famous national parks and covers an area of 11’000 square kilometres. The park entrance is only 200m from our hotel. The Chobe River is located in the north of the park and is the only water source in this region of Botswana that has water all year round. This river therefore always attracts large numbers of wildlife and birds and is particularly popular with elephants. Chobe National Park has the highest density of elephants on the continent for this reason.
Twice a day you go on game drives on the Chobe River. We use specially designed boats for this. The boat brings you as close to the animals as possible. What’s great is that your seat can rotate 360 degrees, so you are very flexible with your camera. You are sure to get spectacular shots of the African wildlife from unique angles.
In between our visits to the National Park, you will enjoy our accommodation in Kasane. Dinner is usually outdoors under the magnificent African sky.
Your photo guide James Gifford is always on hand to offer tips and tricks. Between game drives you relax in camp. Depending on your wishes and needs, James offers short tutorials on different areas of photography. Of course, he will also discuss with you the photos you have already captured and help you how to take even better pictures during the next activity.
Day 4: Transfer to Okavango Delta
After a final game drive into Chobe National Park, our journey continues. After brunch you check out. A short transfer takes you to Kasane airport. From here you fly in a light plane to the Okavango Delta. Arrival in the Okavango Delta and check-in at our accommodation. Afterwards, the first activity is already waiting for you and you go on a game drive in the Okavango Delta. After your return, dinner and overnight stay.
Anschliessend wartet bereits der erste Aktivität auf Sie und Sie gehen auf Pirsch im Okavango Delta. Nach der Rückkehr Abendessen und Übernachtung.
Day 5-6: On the road in Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is rightly considered one of the most beautiful game reserves in Africa. The delta is the largest inland delta in the world and a 15’000 square kilometre area filled with channels, lagoons and small islands. What is special about this wetland is that it lies in the middle of the dry Kalahari. Every year, water from the African highlands flows here and is collected in the delta. The Okavango Delta is therefore a paradise for wildlife. These can be observed from the water and from the land.
Twice a day you will go on game drives in the private concession area in the Okavango Delta. Depending on the water level, you will undertake these excursions in an open jeep (or in a mokoro or motorboat). During your stay in the Okavango Delta, these very varied activities guarantee you unforgettable experiences with the wildlife of the Delta and many great photos.
In between our visits to the National Park, you will enjoy the comforts of our lodge and be pampered with fine food.
Also in the Okavango Delta, our photo guide James Gifford is always available with tips and tricks. Short tutorials on different areas of photography and analysis of your photos are available between activities.
Day 7: Transfer to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
One last activity on land or water in the Okavango Delta awaits you today. After a hearty breakfast, you will check out. You will then fly with a light aircraft from the lodge’s airstrip to the edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. On this flight it is also worthwhile to have your camera ready. Arrive at our lodge at the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and check in.
Day 8-9: Discover the Central Kalahari Game Reserve by jeep and on foot
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve covers large parts of the Central Kalahari and was not open to the public for a long time…. The black-maned Kalahari lions are a special feature, but brown hyenas, oryx antelopes, springbok and over 200 different bird species have also found their home here.
Twice a day you go game viewing in the private concession on the edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. These excursions usually take place in an open jeep. The lodge also has an underground hide at a waterhole. With a bit of luck, you can take fantastic pictures from an ideal angle. With these varied activities, you definitely have the best chances of unforgettable nature experiences and unique photos here in the Kalahari Game Reserve. Back at the lodge, enjoy the great accommodation and fine food after the game drive.
Our photo guide James Gifford always knows good tips and tricks during your stay in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Short tutorials on different areas of photography and analysis of your photos are available between game activities.
Day 10: Back in civilization
After the last morning activity in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, you will be served a final fine breakfast. Afterwards it is time for check-out. You will take a light aircraft to Maun airport. On the flight you enjoy the beauty of Botswana from the air for the last time and say goodbye to the unique wildlife.
From Maun you start your individual journey home or onward journey.
Accommodation
Day 1-3: our lodge in chobe nationalpark.
Our accommodation in Kasane is perfectly situated to visit the Chobe National Park. It is slightly elevated on a plateau and therefore offers a wonderful view over the lower Chobe River and all the way to the Caprivi Strip of Namibia.
Chobe is one of Africa’s most famous national parks and covers an area of 11’000 square kilometres. The park entrance is only 200m from the hotel and can therefore be reached quickly.
The lodge at Chobe National Park has 14 modern furnished rooms, all with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are approximately 28m2 and have a private balcony with wonderful views over the waterhole. Other amenities at the lodge include the dining area, a pool and a cosy lounge with bar.
Day 4-6: Our lodge in Okavango Delta
Our lodge is situated in the south-west of the Okavango Delta and was completely renovated in 2019. It is situated in a private concession area directly on the banks of a river. The beautiful landscape around the lodge is home to a variety of wildlife and therefore this lodge is the perfect base for our explorations in the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is rightly considered one of the most beautiful game reserves in Africa. The Delta is the largest inland delta in the world and a 15’000 square kilometre area filled with channels, lagoons and small islands.
This Okavango Delta accommodation has 7 stylishly furnished safari tent-style rooms. All rooms are luxuriously furnished and offer a beautiful bathroom with a spacious shower. Other amenities at the lodge include the dining area, a pool and a cosy lounge with bar. A special highlight of the lodge is the Sleep Out Deck, where you can spend the night under the starry African sky if you wish.
The lodge is certified with 5 stars. It is also very environmentally friendly and is powered 100% by solar energy.
Day 7-9: Our lodge in Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The third accommodation on this photo tour is situated on the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This lodge has the perfect location to discover the many desert inhabitants and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Kalahari.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest and most isolated reserve in southern Africa, covering 52’000 square kilometres. For about 25’000 years, this vast desert landscape has been home to many animal species and the San Bushmen.
This accommodation at the Central Kalahari Game Reserve has 7 stylishly furnished rooms in safari tent style. All rooms are luxuriously furnished and offer a beautiful bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, running water and toilet. The tents offer plenty of privacy and are connected by wooden walkways. Other amenities at the lodge include the dining area, a pool and a cosy lounge with bar. A special highlight of the lodge is the Sleep Out Deck, where you can spend the night under the African starry sky if you wish.
This accommodation is certified with 5 stars and an ecotourism award.
Good to know
Temperatures can reach between 30 and 35 degrees. The trip takes place at the beginning of the rainy season. There may be thunderstorms and individual game drives may be cancelled depending on the weather.
Fitness level
The trip does not require any special physical requirements.
For trips to Botswana, malaria prophylaxis tablets and the usual vaccinations are highly recommended. Please consult with a doctor specialising in tropical medicine, or your family doctor. You must take important medication with you from your home country, as there is no guarantee that you will receive the desired medication in Botswana. All important medicines should be carried in your hand luggage.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.

Photo tour Mashatu – Botswana
A 9-day African photo safari (8 nights) at Mashatu in Botswana is a fantastic opportunity to capture images of leopards, lions, elands, herds of elephants, and sometimes cheetahs.
The game drives occur twice daily, in the morning and in the afternoon/evening, coinciding with the best times for photography. Particularly in the summer, the Mashatu landscape is unique, often adorned with an abundance of flowers.
The maximum number of guests for this Botswana journey is 8, with 2 professional photographers divided between two vehicles. We travel with local guides in open game drive vehicles.
A stay at Mashatu can be seamlessly integrated into a customized South African trip and is also highly appealing to non-photographing companions.
Mashatu Photo Safari – Botswana Charity Trip
Van Bommel Safaris has established the trust fund “Rebuilding the Herd” and donates almost the entire proceeds from this trip to this fund. The purpose of this fund is to assist a number of Mashatu employees who lost all their livestock during the COVID-19 period due to theft from Zimbabwe. In Botswana, livestock is of invaluable importance and is considered the retirement fund for the local population. Since the affected individuals are already elderly, this opportunity provides them with the only chance to rebuild their livestock. We have been dedicated to this noble cause since January 2022 and will continue to do so at least until January 2025. Your participation in this safari directly contributes to the rebuilding of their livestock. A financial report from Mashatu about “Rebuilding the Herd” is available on request via [email protected].

05/20/2025 – 05/24/2025: A multitude of photo opportunities
Each day in this region can offer a multitude of destinations for photography! Weather and bird sightings will direct our choices throughout each day. Be prepared for plans to change at any time as we receive messages from our friends in the area. Some of the locations we plan to frequent during the week will be:
Magee Marsh : The famous Magee Marsh Boardwalk, even on a slow day, can offer spectacular migration opportunities. Warblers, vireos, tanagers, orioles, cuckoos and thrushes may be photographed at very close distances. Along the boardwalk we may also find owls, nightjars and woodcock plus snakes, frogs and turtles.
Oak Openings : As the name would suggest, much of this park is open prairie dotted with oaks. The variations of shrubs, tall trees and low shrubs attract a number of different bird species.
Howard Marsh : The newest bird destination in the area, Howard Marsh is a man-made wetland that has quickly become a shorebird and waterfowl hotspot offering a multitude of species.
Pearson Metropark : This little park has two sides, separated by railroad tracks. On one side is a wonderful woodland area with a number of feeders to attract birds. The other side is a wetland where Sora, shorebirds and waterfowl can be found.
Maumee Bay State Park : The highlight of Maumee Bay is the boardwalk through the sometimes flooded forest. The nature center at one end of the boardwalk offer a few of feeding stations and long the trail we often find roosting screech owls.
Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge : This NWR doesn’t always have their drive open to the public, but if it is open we will certainly explore the drive. They also have several wooded trails and a pond that often gets unexpected vagrant grebes and ducks.
Our final morning should offer some time to enjoy a nearby location before returning to the hotel at 10:00am to pack up and check-out no later than 11:00am to drive to the airport.
Guides and hosts
Focus, difficulty, and comfort, difficulty & physical strain, practical details, climate & weather.
Ohio in Spring can offer very unpredictable weather. Although the historic average high along the lake region is a cool 67° F and low 53° F, be prepared for much colder as well as warmer possibilities. Along the lake shore, chilly winds can make it feel cooler. Dress in layers to peel and replace as conditions change. Always have rain gear with you in the van and preferably wear quickdrying synthetic clothing. If it gets very warm we may even get some mosquitoes, no-seeums or ticks, so have repellent just in case. For ticks, permethrin sprayed onto clothing before your trip will help safeguard against bites.
Consult the website of the Government of Canada for the latest information on health and vaccination requirements.
No-see-ums, mosquitos and ticks are all possible. Insect repellents will help to keep these pesky nuisances away, along with long-sleeve shirts, and trousers tucked into your socks. Although DEET is popular, it can damage equipment. Natrapel works well, as d o Permethrin-based products.
Passport and visas
Consult the websites of the Department of State for the latest information of entry, exit, and visa requirements for the United States.
The US dollar (USD) is the only currency used. You can take out euros from any ATM, which are abundant, or change money at the exchange offices at the airport.

Do not neglect the mid-range telephoto area (150-300 mm) as many subjects are large and/or approachable, or in groups.
