How Kat Hall brings Muffin But Good Vibes
Rising reggae roots goddess Kat Hall is not only someone you should have on your release radar, she is one of the featured artists at the upcoming Two Year Anniversary Party for San Diego bakery Muffin But Good Vibes ! Joining reggae-infused hip hop group Katastro, reggae rock’s The Resinators and opener Alific (alongside Man of the Forests), Kat Hall is 100% going to bring the business to Little Italy’s Music Box on April 5th.
We were so excited for the show, we had to reach out for comment!
Since we were initially introduced to Hall at Reggae Rise Up Florida over five years ago, (doing backup vocals for Sailor Jane), it seems her solo career has really taken off. With the show right around the corner, we wanted to know more about Hall’s current projects, future endeavors and muffin preferences (just in case of a collab!!). Here is what she said.
How has the last five years, both personally and professionally, defined your musical journey as an artist?
- KH: I owe a great deal of my success to other artists and friends that believe in my vision. E.N Young and Sailor Jane gave me a platform to sing my heart out, and I couldn’t have more respect for them and the opportunity for my voice to be heard.
- Since moving to Long Beach, California in 2019, I’ve met and collaborated with some fantastic artists and I’ve started a new band. In my personal life, facing a new city by myself was exhilarating and scary at times, but trusting in the unknown has led to an insane amount of blessings.
- In my opinion, there are way more creatives in California than Florida and I’ve been really fortunate to have met artists that have inspired me to be better and tighten up my music strategy.
You have come out with some really impressive visuals for your latest songs. When it comes to your music videos, what does the creative process look like behind the scenes in regards to planning? Do you have a creative team that you would like to shoutout?
- Thank you! I’m really stoked on my visuals, they mean a lot to me. I’m a huge fan of meditation and manifestation. The concepts for my videos come to me during moments of silence, where I let my mind wander and dream. I feel that music videos are the embodiment of the artist’s higher self, so that’s the energy I am channeling when picturing my music videos.
- For the “Chase No More” video, I had my friend Kat direct each scene after discussing my vision with her. She did an amazing job and added so many amazing elements, as well as outfits. She does creative directing for The Late Ones and you can find her work at Mint Street Vision.
It really does take a village, doesn’t it!? Is there any song that you have released that holds a special place in your heart and, if so, why?
- It does take a village! I’m so grateful for all the help I’ve gotten from friends and family to make my dreams come alive.
- Right now, I’m excited about my new song “We Are The Solution”, with Nick Sefakis of Iya Terra. I wrote the lyrics and chords of the song on acoustic guitar, and he made a beat for it with drums, keys, bass and guitar, and then we had Glenn Holdaway add trumpet for the finishing touch. It always amazes me when producers take a small idea and make a masterpiece out of it. It’s truly magical!
What I have really enjoyed about seeing you grow as an artist is your continued emphasis on sisterhood and community.
- Thanks for noticing that I’m all about female empowerment. This is a huge passion of mine, because women are so underrepresented in the music industry. I want my journey to inspire other women to break out of their comfort zone and make art.
- I’ve also noticed that women can sometimes be catty and cliquey. I want to change that stigma and create a network of boss babes to change the world!
Your sound is quite unique. What artists or bands would you say have influenced your sound?
- I am heavily influenced by R&B and jazz music — or anything soulful, really. My main vocal influences are Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. I love my reggae roots, but I’d love to branch out to Neo-Soul vibes and create a new genre. I never want to put my music in a box. Some other influences are Slightly Stoopid, Thievery Corporation and Anderson.Paak.
If there was a vibe or a message that you want to get across through your music, what would it be?
- That’s easy — UNITY. I want my music to bring people together. Whether you enjoy roots reggae, surf reggae, jazz, funk or R&B, I hope that you can stand beside someone different than yourself and feel a sense of community at my shows. Music is unique in its ability to transcend religion, nationality and age. I want to capitalize on this quality and use sound as a bridge between people of all cultures.
It’s so important for music to have a message, so thanks for sharing that with us. You’re originally from Florida and relocated to California. What brought you to making that decision and in what ways have you grown as an artist since the move?
- Moving out to California was a no-brainer for me. Of course, it was difficult to leave my entire family and fan base, but it just FELT right.
- The reggae music scene — and the music industry in general — is much larger out here. My mentality was, “If I can make it in Tallahassee, Florida’s music scene, why can’t I make it in LA?”
- I’m a dreamer through and through. Moving 3,000 miles away sounded like a great challenge and I’ve seen so much growth since leaving my comfort zone. I like to say that everything in California is 100 times that of Florida. There are more people, more fans, more traffic (unfortunately) and more musicians. I’m lucky to have found a supportive, uplifting community out here that supports me.
You just got off of tour with Sensi Trails. What advice would you give up-and-coming solo artists in regards to ‘tour life’ and ‘getting your feet in the door’, so to speak?
- I’m a firm believer that upcoming artists have to ‘pay their dues’ to make a wave. That’s exactly what I did on tour and I’m grateful that I had my band to take on the journey with me. This industry can’t be pursued out of love for money; it has to be chased in the name of passion. Sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and make sacrifices to get where you want to go.
- I would recommend any band to go on tour, even if it’s scary. The amount of connections and lasting relationships I’ve made is astounding. I would do it again tomorrow if I could! I love the Sensi Trails boys.
What do fans have to look forward to from Kat Hall in 2022?
- I have a few new singles on the way! Look out, folks. Thanks so much for having me guys, see you on April 5th!
Thank you for speaking with us today. We cannot wait for your April 5th show at The Music Box with Katastro, The Resinators and Alfic ft. Man of the Forests! Peirone Prize Winner - Kat Hall
How one woman gets high school students really, really excited about trees and manual labor.
By Daniel Walters
But then there are the trees — around 2,000 of them. There’s hawthorn, thinleaf alders, cedars, dogwood and black cottonwood, all standing about three feet high in pots, lined together in a straight grid pattern. The seeds come in April, they grow throughout the summer, and — in the spring and the fall — they’re planted throughout Spokane.
Hall, head of Project Sustain for the Lands Council, sticks her hands in her pockets and sways back and forth on her heels, smiling broadly. These are the things she’d always loved. Teaching and learning. And trees.
AGE: 39 POSITION: Conservation Programs Director, The Lands Council MY PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE IS: Do your best, give more than you take, experience all you can; love and be loved; have fun; make a difference and go quietly. I GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE: It’s the right thing to do. As Mohammed Ali said, “The service you do for others is the rent you pay for the time you spend on Earth.” I WISH FOR: All of us to live more on the “pay it forward” principle to help spread kindness and goodness in the world. I LOOK UP TO: My parents, my cousin Marina, and people who, in the face of suffering, adversity, and seemingly impossible obstacles, find courage, joy and a way to change the world.
With college degrees in natural resources and environmental management, she spent about four years in West Africa doing agroforestry for the Peace Corps, where, among other things, she planted trees. In southeast Alaska, as part of a youth corps, she worked with at-risk youth struggling with drug and alcohol and domestic violence. There, the point was to get them out doing trail projects or highway restoration programs.
When she looks at all the stuff she’s done, she sees a lot of similarities: Whether it’s community service or working with kids, somehow trees always seem to be involved.
Today, with Project Sustain, she helps tackles two problems simultaneously: Specific places in Spokane need trees, and Spokane kids don’t get to go on many field trips.
Addressing the first problem is simple. In some areas of Spokane, like Hangman Creek, there’s a lot of agricultural runoff and erosion. But if trees are planted here, as their roots grow down, they hold the soil firm, preventing runoff and eventually protecting the river. For the Lands Council, a local advocacy group working to protect forests and rivers, that’s a big deal.
It helps to have volunteers to plant those trees — so that’s where the kids come in.
“When kids actually get outside, when they’re with their peers, they’re getting their hands dirty, they’re smelling and they’re feeling and they’re looking and they’re participating — as opposed to sitting in a desk in a classroom — they transform,” Hall says, emphasizes the word as her hands animate. “You can see it in their eyes almost.”
It started informally three or four years ago when Hall began working with local students with the Gonzaga Earthbound program, which provides environmental after-school education for elementary- and middle-school students. Word began getting around to local school districts.
“It appears that lots of schools either don’t have a budget for field trips or they’re very much reduced,” Hall says.
Project Sustain raises funds from members of the business community, and sends the kids on tree-planting field trips. For the local environmental advocacy group, it’s been one of their most successful programs.
“Wow, I’m working on planting trees with an A.P. environmental class at North Central High School, and this is their only time they’re getting outside all year,” Halls says. “And this is a college-level environmental class.”
She’s an evangelist for the outdoors, for how far that simple change of environment goes. She practices what she preaches — kayaking and sailing in her free time.
Project Sustain is one of many things she does for the Lands Council. Last year, the Reforest Spokane project that she started planted 10,000 Ponderosa pine trees. With assistance from a Head Start program, she started an effort that tested youth for lead levels. About 11 percent of tested kids, she says, have elevated lead levels in their blood.
She also meets with homeless, low-income and ethnic populations to educate them about the toxic parts of the Spokane River. Many of them spend a lot of time next to the river and may not get the health information that others do, and many are from Russian, Slavic or other local ethnic populations.
Though she doesn’t speak Russian, Hall says her time in Cameroon gives her an advantage. “I do have a lot of memories of just breaking through cultural barriers and working hand-in-hand or side-by-side in the field and planting trees and then eating a big feast and drinking palm oil and celebrating,” she says. “And doing what people do. I have some of my best memories of my life doing things like that.”
She unfolds a few stapled pages of paper from her pocket, highlighting quotes of area students reacting to Project Sustain. Maria from Ferris High School says she can’t wait to take environmental science classes at the University of Washington, something she wouldn’t have even considered that before. Michael from West Valley City School, who’d wanted to be a “game programmer” for the past two years, is considering a career as scientist.
And then there’s Briauna from Ferris: “During our time at Hangman Creek, our class got to experience the magnificent presence of a bald eagle, the first wild bald eagle that I have ever seen in my life,” she writes. “At the end of the trip, my feet were soaking from falling into one of the many crevices the creek makes, but I barely noticed because of the happiness I felt.”
“It’s an image of these three teenage girls who just weren’t really dressed for the occasion — who were almost knee-deep in mud,” she laughs “… planting trees along this water course and they had smiles from ear to ear. And they just — they couldn’t have been happier. It’s like I said before. Just get them outside, they change.”
That’s why Kat Hall loves her job.

Dozens Dead After Multiple Gunmen Open Fire at Russian Concert Venue
At least 40 people are dead after multiple gunmen opened fire at a Russian concert venue near Moscow today (March 22), as reported by Russian news outlet TASS [via The New York Times ].
What Venue Was Attacked + Who Was Playing?
Russian rock band Picnic were set to perform a show at the Crocus City Hall outside Moscow in the town of Krasnogorsk when at least three individuals dressed in camouflage opened fire with automatic weapons.
The condition of the band members is not currently known.
In videos online, which we've reviewed but have elected not to embed most due to their extremity, people can be heard screaming inside the hall as the gunshots started firing and echoing throughout the hall. Some videos showed individuals wounded on the ground as weapons were discharged.
Another report by RIA Novosti [via CNN ] claims that the three gunmen also “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire” within Crocus City Hall.
About 100 people are said to have been evacuated from the venue by firefighters, and video footage online shows the building engulfed in flames.
That video can be seen below.

Official Statements
“Today a terrible tragedy occurred in the Crocus City center. My condolences to the loved ones of the victims. I gave orders to provide all necessary assistance to everyone who suffered during the incident,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement.
The U.S. Embassy in Russia received an alert on March 7 warning people to avoid large gatherings, stating that they received alerts that "extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours."
This is a developing story.
