The Masters

The Masters Tournament usually kicks off major tournament season in the game of golf. Since 1934, the Masters has been home to some of the game’s best moments, from holes-in-one, historic chip-ins, monumental comebacks and remarkable victories.

The tournament is also home to the unique and beautiful flowers around the property that represent and name each hole.

Here is a look at everything you need to know about the Masters.

When is the Masters?

The Masters Tournament is usually held every April, around the first or second weekend.

For the first six tournaments from 1934-1939, the event, which was named the Augusta National Invitational Tournament until 1939, was played in mid-March. During that first event in 1934, as the tournament progressed, the temperature continued to drop. In 1940, that is when the Masters shifted to the first full week in April.

However, in 2020, the event was pushed back to November due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was played without fans. In addition, to go further back into history the Masters was not played from 1943-1945 due to World War II.

The flowers blooming give way to the unique essence of springtime as the beginning to major championship.

Where is the Masters played?

The Masters

The Masters is played at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Geo., which is along the state line between Georgia and South Carolina.

The property was purchased in 1931 and Dr. Alister Mackenzie, a British golf course architect who formed numerous courses across the world was in charge of designing Augusta National.

Although Mackenzie lived for only three more years, passing away in January 1934, co-founders Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts saw the rest of the project through as the first Masters Tournament was played a couple months after Mackenzie’s passing.

How much are tickets to the Masters?

In order to get a Masters ticket to be part of the gallery at Augusta National for the first major tournament of the year, you have had to apply for a ticket in June 2023 and then be chosen randomly. As a result, there are no tickets available for the 2024 event.

The 2025 Masters Tournament ticket application will be open from June 1-20, before payments open in mid-July if accepted, which goes through a random selection process.

The Masters defines the selection process “not a sweepstakes or ‘give-away’ but rather a pre-qualification drawing to those wishing to purchase tickets to the Masters Tournament.”

If you were chosen to attend the Masters and were selected to get Daily Tournament tickets, its costs $140 per day plus any appropriate shipping and handling, if applicable.

How many players in the Masters?

Since the beginning in 1934 when it was an invitational tournament, the Masters is an invite-only event to play in. As a result, the number of players can vary each year. In 2023, there were 88 competitors.

Players can qualify in a numerous number of ways, from being inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking, to winning or placing really high at the other three major tournaments or on the PGA Tour. The field can also consists of amateurs and those not on the PGA Tour, whether they won the Amateur Championship in the U.S., Latin America or in the Asia-Pacific.

In addition the number of players in the field fluctuate from year-to-year because every past Masters Champion has a lifetime qualification into the field, no matter their age. In 2023, Fred Couples, who won the Masters in 1992, became the oldest player to make the cut in a Masters Tournament field at the age of 63. He is also listed to compete in the 2024 iteration, looking to extend that record to 64 years old.

How many rounds is the Masters?

The Masters consist of four regulation rounds, usually per day of 18 holes.

What is the lowest ever score at The Masters?

The Masters, Dustin Johnson

The lowest 72-hole score at the Masters was achieved by Dustin Johnson in 2020 before putting on the elusive green jacket. Johnson shot a 20-under 268, which was the best score after Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth each shot 18-under 170 in 1997 and 2015, respectively.

Has the Masters ever finished on a Monday?

In tournament history, the Masters has finished on a Monday five times. The first was in 1936 when Horton Smith put on the green after playing, not 18, but 36 holes in a marathon effort to win by one stroke at 3-under par.

Most of the time, it is bad weather that forces a tournament to be played on Monday. Two years after Smith won, it happened again in 1938 as inclement weather forced the tournament to begin on Saturday before getting the second and third rounds in on Sunday with the final round taking place on Monday. Henry Picard survived the three-day Masters event, winning by two at 3-under par.

The third time a Masters Monday finish would not come for another 23 years until 1961 when the rain on Sunday forced the final round to be replayed the next day. Gary Player was 2-under through nine holes when play was called. On Monday, he shot 2-under through nine holes the next day and had a 3-over performance on the back nine, but it did not hinder his lead as he went on to win the first of three green jackets.

Mother nature proved powerful 12 years later in 1973. This time, it resulted in Tommy Aaron putting on the green jacket for his only major victory of his career as he defeated C.J. Snead, the nephew of three-time Masters Champion and seven-time major champion Sam Snead, by one stroke.

The fifth and most recent time the Masters was played on a Monday was in 1983 when rain fell onto Augusta National on Friday. However, Seve Ballesteros was able to fight off the elements to win the Masters at 8-under par.

Is the Masters a PGA event?

The Masters is not a PGA Tour sanctioned event, but rather an event on the PGA Tour schedule. The Masters is its own entity, like the R&A who run the Open Championship.

What is the cut at the Masters?

The cut at the Masters is for the top 50 players and ties.

The cut was first initiated at the Masters in 1957 when it was set at the top 40 players and ties until 1961. In 1962, the cut was moved to the top 44 and those within 10 stokes of the lead until 2012. Since 2013, cut has remained at top 50 players and ties within 10 strokes of the lead in order to have a tee time at Augusta National on the weekend.

Jack Nicklaus, who won the Masters six times, holds the record for the most cuts made at the Masters with 37, followed by Couples with 31. The only other player with at least 30 made cuts at the masters is Gary Player. Other notable players on the list include Phil Mickelson at 27 with Raymond Floyd and Bernhard Langer, Woods at 24 with Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer at 23 made cuts with Billy Casper.

However, Couples, Player and Woods are tied for the record of most consecutive cuts. Woods is trying to make that elusive 24 th consecutive cut to break the tie at the top. Couples made his consecutive cuts from 1983 to 2007, Player from 1959 to 1982 and Woods from 1997 to 2023.

Who won the Masters last year?

The Masters Jon Rahm

In 2023, Jon Rahm won the green jacket for the first time in his career, defeating Brooks Koepka and Mickelson by four strokes. Entering Sunday’s final round, it was a battle between Rahm and Kopeka and as the day went on, Mickelson had a strong Sunday finish to tie Koepka for second place.

Rahm got out to fast start with a 7-under 65 and followed that up with a 69 before posting a third round 73, the same score Koepka had. However, in the final round, the Spaniard shot a 69 compared to Koepka’s 75 to hoist the trophy.

There’s no tournament more anticipated than the Masters , and even for seasoned pros, scoring an invitation is reason for celebration.

But how does a player qualify for the Masters?

Though it’s a major championship, the Masters is also an invitational, so the tournament field is assembled at the discretion of the Masters Committee. That said, the Committee has established criteria for players to earn an invitation to compete at Augusta National .

How to qualify for the Masters

Winning the Masters earns the champion a lifetime exemption into the field — the most generous exemption in the world of golf. Many former champions continue to play the Masters even though they are long past their prime. Earlier this year, 64-year-old Larry Mize announced that the 2023 Masters will be his last. This year will mark 40 consecutive Masters for Mize, who won his green jacket in 1987.

Win one of the other three majors

Players who win one of the other three majors (PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship) are awarded a five-year exemption into the Masters field.

Win the Players Championship

Winners of the Players Championship can enjoy a three-year exemption into the Masters.

Win Olympic gold

The Olympic gold medalist can enjoy a one-year exemption into the Masters field.

Win (or finish runner-up) in an elite amateur tournament

Winners of the U.S. Amateur Championship, British Amateur, Asia-Pacific Amateur, Latin American Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur are invited to play the Masters. Traditionally, the U.S. Amateur runner-up is also invited.

Play well in the majors

The top-12 finishers (including ties) at each year’s Masters are invited back the following year if they are not otherwise exempt. For the other major championships, it’s the top 4 and ties.

Win a PGA Tour tournament

Winners of PGA Tour events that received full FedEx Cup points are eligible for a spot in the Masters.

Qualify for the Tour Championship

The 30 players who qualify for the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship are exempt into the Masters field the following year.

Be a Top-50 player

The top 50-ranked players in the Official World Golf Ranking as of January 1 every year earn an exemption into the Masters field.

Be a Top-50 player the week before the Masters

Any player who enters the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking and who is not otherwise exempt the week before each Masters gets an invitation to join the field.

Catch the Masters Committee’s attention

The Masters Committee also reserves the right to extend an invitation to players that they feel are deserving of a place in the field. This year, Japanese pro Kazuki Higa and reigning NCAA champion Gordon Sargent accepted special invitations .

How to Qualify for the Masters: All 20 Exemptions at a Glance

The Masters is surrounded by decades of tradition and endless memorable moments and highlights. Outside of tournament organizers and perhaps a few seasoned golf scribes, not many could recite all 20 routes that players take to complete the field each and every year. All 20 Masters qualifications are described here. See how many you already knew and which ones you just learned about.

Exemptions for Champions

The first Masters exemptions are handed out to champions of prestigious events, including previous Masters champions. Here are the events that include a Masters invitation with the trophy.

1. Previous Masters Champions

Anyone who has won the Masters is invited back for life. Arnold Palmer played in 50 consecutive Masters tournaments but the overall record is held by Gary Player who played in 52 spanning from 1957-2009.

2. U.S. Open Champions

Players who have won the U.S. Open are invited to the Masters for the following five years. In the case of a player like Brooks Koepka who won the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2018, the exemption is based on the most recent win.

3. British Open Champions

The same rules apply as the exemption for U.S. Open winners listed above. Win the British Open , and you get invited to play in the Masters for the next five years.

4. PGA Champions

Again, the same rules apply to winners of the PGA Championship as the U.S. and British Open champions, a five-year exemption from the player’s most recent PGA Championship victory. If Phil Mickelson had never won a green jacket, he would be exempt until 2026 for winning the 2021 PGA Championship.

5. Players Championship Winner

The golfer that conquers TPC Sawgrass and wins The Players Championship receives a three-year exemption into the Masters. Quite the luxury for winning “golf’s 5th major.”

6. Olympic Gold Medalist (current)

This one didn’t come into play until golf was reintroduced as an Olympic sport in 2016. The golfer that wins the gold medal is exempt for one year. Xander Schauffele won Olympic gold in 2021, and his golf medal exemption expired after the 2022 Masters.

7. U.S. Amateur Champion (current)

The winner of the U.S. Amateur is exempt for one year. Players such as Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, and Viktor Hovland have gotten their first looks at Augusta National by way of winning the U.S. Amateur.

8. British Amateur Champion (current)

Like the U.S. Amateur, the champion of the British Amateur is exempt into the Masters for one year. Notable champions include Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal, who both went on to become Masters champions.

9. Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion (current)

The Asia-Pacific Amateur champion receives a one-year Masters exemption. 2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama won this event in 2010 and 2011.

10. Latin American Amateur Champion (current)

The champion of the Latin American Amateur also secures a one-year Masters exemption. 2018 Latin American Amateur Champion Joaquin Niemann is now routinely in the Masters via other exemptions.

11. U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion (current)

One spot is reserved in the Masters for the top amateur player who isn't a powerhouse collegiate star merely months away from turning professional. The U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion enjoys a one-year exemption.

Other Masters Exemptions

In addition to earning a Masters invitation through winning one of the events above, invitations are handed out to players who meet any of the following criteria, regardless of if they have won a big event.

12. The top-12 players from the previous Masters, including ties.

13. The top-4 players from the previous U.S. Open, including ties.

14. The top-4 players from the previous British Open, including ties.

15. The top-4 players from the previous PGA Championship, including ties.

16. Players who have won a PGA Tour event that awards full-points for the Tour Championship since the last Masters.

17. Players that qualified for the previous year’s Tour Championship.

18. The top-50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking the previous year.

19. The top-50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking the week before the current Masters year.

20. The first 19 exemptions are ironclad, and then there’s this one. The Masters Committee, which oversees the tournament, is allowed to invite international players that are not otherwise qualified to play in the event.

Trying to remember all of these different avenues to Magnolia Lane can be dizzying. A very positive note, Augusta National and the Masters Committee continues to evolve and looks to other areas of the world to bring the best players to the tournament each year.

Masters 2023: A casual fan's guide to one of the most highly anticipated Masters ever

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/3/masters-2023-casual-guide-photo-collage.jpg

We say it literally every year. "This is one of the most highly-anticipated Masters ever." That's usually followed by a "I know we say that every year, but we really mean it this year."

But seriously, the 2023 Masters is one of the most highly-anticipated Masters ever. We really mean it this time.

We say that because there are an endless amount of fascinating storylines that are getting set to play out at Augusta National in the coming days. If you're a casual fan reading this who might only kinda, sorta know what's been going on, well you've come to the right place. We're here to answer all your burning questions in preparation for golf's first men's major championship of the year.

Let's get started.

Is Tiger Woods playing?

Nice, starting with a (relatively) easy one. Yes, Woods is expected to be in the field at Augusta National. We last saw him at the Genesis Invitational in February at Riviera, where he tied for 45th.

Is he healthy? Can he contend?

Unfortunately, Woods' February 2021 single car crash was so damaging to his body, specifically his right leg, that he'll never be 100 percent again. When we've seen him play in past tournaments, he's walked with a noticeable limp, which will make hoofing around hilly Augusta National even harder than it normally is for the 47-year-old. A year ago, Tiger made the Masters his first official tournament since the accident , impressively made the cut but faded on the weekend and finished T-47.

As for whether or not he can contend, the 15-time major champion showed enough at Riviera and when playing last December in the PNC Championship with his son Charlie to make you believe he's capable of conjuring up some late-career magic. He knows all the ins and outs of Augusta National, having won here five times, which helps, too. It will simply come down to whether or not his body can hold up for four straight days, and if the putter can cooperate. He still drives it as long as many of the young players on tour, still has all the short-game shots and remains one of the best ball-strikers in the world when he's on.

Is Phil Mickelson playing?

Why yes, yes he is.

Wait, isn't he a LIV golfer?

1460990207

Phil Mickelson returns to Augusta after skipping last year's Masters.

Luke Walker/WME IMG

Aren't LIV golfers banned from PGA Tour events?

Yes, they are, but the Masters, while an official PGA Tour event, is not run by the PGA Tour. It's run by the members of the Augusta National Golf Club itself, and club chairman Fred Ridley announced in December that any player who had qualified based on the tournament's previous criteria would be invited to play in this year's tournament.

So which LIV golfers earned invites?

In addition to Mickelson, who earned a lifetime inviation to play in the Masters by virtue of winning the event in 2004, 2006 and 2010, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson and Patrick Reed also were invited as past champions. Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith are in as major winners in the last five years, while Abraham Ancer, Talor Gooch, Jason Kokrak, Thomas Pieters, Kevin Na, Joaquin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen and Harold Varner III are all in because they were among the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking at the end of 2022. Mito Pereira fit that criteria, too, as well as being among the top four finishers in last year's PGA Championship.

Did any big LIV Golf names not get in?

Maybe not big to the casual fan, but pretty big in the golf world. A pair of Englishmen, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter, will not be in Augusta, both having fell outside of the top 100 players in the world. The same goes for Australia's Marc Leishman, who owns a pair of top-five finishes at the Masters in his career. Others of note who will miss: Matthew Wolff, Lee Westwood and former major winners Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell.

Will Sergio, Bubba, Phil, DJ, Schwartzel and Reed be at the Tuesday night Champions Dinner?

Unless one of them comes down with an illness and has to miss, yes, of course they will be there. There's been talk of some possible "tension" between the LIV players and the non-LIV guys—Fred Couples has been particualrly critical of LIV golfers, recently calling Garcia "a clown" and Mickelson 'a nutbag'—but it will likely end up being a normal evening. At least as long as they sit Couples away from Garcia and Mickelson.

masters-champions-dinner-2019.jpg

One big happy group of past winners from the 2019 Champions Dinner.

Barry Koenig/Augusta National

Enough about LIV. What about our boy Rickie Fowler? He's in, right?

Unfortunately, Fowler is currently not in the Masters field, though he can get in via the Hail Mary of all Hail Marys— by winning this week's Valero Texas Open . It's not out of the realm of possibilty, as Fowler has been playing some stellar golf of late and is actually one of the tournament favorites. But it's still a tall task (Fowler hasn't won on the PGA Tour in more than four years). And should he finish second or worse, a very likely possibility, Fowler will miss his third consecutive Masters after playing in 10 straight from 2011 to 2020. On a more positive note, he's on track to get back into the field for 2024.

What about the golf course? Didn't the club make some changes?

It sure did. Augusta National does a little tinkering almost every year, but it did some major tinkering of one of its most iconic holes this off-season to combat the insane distance of today's top tour pros. The par-5 13th, also known as Azalea, will play significantly longer this year , 35 yards longer to be exact. For the biggest hitters, the hole had become a driver (sometimes even a 3 wood) and a 7-, 8- or 9-iron, removing the true risk-reward factor of going for a crucial par 5 in two. It may not sound all that much longer, but it is. Rory McIlroy played a few practice rounds at Augusta recently and while he said the drive is easier, the second shot is not. He was hitting 8 iron in in recent years, and during his practice rounds he was hitting 5-iron.

is masters a pga tour event

The club lenghtened another par 5 last year, too, right?

Yes it did, the par-5 15th, AKA "Firethorn," which was extended by 20 yards prior to the 2022 tournament and led to a lot more layups. The par-4 11th, "White Dogwood," was also lengthened by 15 yards last year.

Wow, imagine how much tougher these holes will be if the USGA and R&A's recent golf ball rollback announcement actually comes to fruition.

Wow … and you call yourself a casual fan?!? We’re impressed you’re aware that the two governing bodies have proposed a change for “elite competition” only that would reduce how far the ball goes off the tee by potentially 20 or more yards.

Now, if the rollback happens, for starters it wouldn’t go into effect until 2026 and Augusta National would then have to decide whether or not it would put the rule in place for the Masters.

2021 Masters Tournament

Fred Ridley's annual Chairman's press conference at Augusta National on Wednesday is likely to draw lots of attention.

Rusty Jarrett

Well, would they do it?

It’s unclear, although at past Masters, club chairman Fred Ridley has lamented about distance issues in the game and the potential for the club to make changes to maintain the integrity of the course design at Augusta National. Ridley holds his annual press conference on Wednesday of tournament week, and he will certainly be asked a question or two about the rollback proposal. How he answers those questions could have a significant impact on the fate of the proposal, as tournament organizers could take their cues from Ridley.

So this Ridley guy has a lot going on this week?

If keeping the peace at the Champions Dinner, navigating the thorny equipment conversation and making sure the world’s most popular golf tournament is run without any issues is “a lot”, then yes.

Any other changes at Augusta we should know about?

Oh yes. Augusta National's par 3 course underwent a complete renovation this off-season , and the changes appear to be quite dramatic. We'll get an up-close look on Wednesday during the Par-3 contest, but for now these Eureka Earth photos show an aerial view of the makeover:

So, who is going to win?

Ha, not touching that one. Instead, we'll direct you to an odds board , which has Rory McIlroy as the clear-cut favorite to finally win a green jacket. McIlroy has won the other three men’s majors and needs an Augusta victory to become just the sixth golfer to claim the career grand slam. In his last nine trips to Augusta, the Northern Irishman has finished in the top-10 seven times, including a solo second last year. The thing is the guy who beat him by three shots last year, Scottie Scheffler , is playing awfully well again—he’s the reigning World No. 1. And the man Scheffler has been trading that top spot with, Jon Rahm, is also right near the top of the odds board as well. With all three of these premier players on top of their games, no wonder this is one of the most highly anticipated Masters ever.

A beginner's guide to The Masters: Key things to know ahead of the major at Augusta National

The Masters takes place at Augusta National from April 6-9, exclusively live on Sky Sports; Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion, Rory McIlroy attempts to complete the career Grand Slam and Tiger Woods is set to feature once again

The Masters has no shortage of storylines at Augusta National. Tiger Woods returns after nearly two months. This will be only his third appearance against elite competition since last year's Masters. Rory McIlroy is in good form as he goes for the final leg of the career Grand Slam. And they share the stage with 18 players who most fans haven't see in more than nine months. Why is The Masters such an important date in the sporting calendar? Ahead of the opening golf major of the year, exclusively live from Augusta National on Sky Sports Golf , we look at some of the common questions asked about the event...

What is The Masters and how do I watch?

The Masters is one of the four major championships in professional golf, and truly unique in the sense that it is the only one to be held at the same location every year, the world-famous Augusta National golf course.

First played in 1934, this year's tournament will be the 87th in its history - with Sky Sports broadcasting nearly 70 hours of live coverage from Georgia across tournament week.

Who plays in The Masters?

The top 50 in the world at the end of the previous calendar year earn an invite, as do those inside the top 50 during the week before the tournament takes place, while previous winners hold a lifetime exemption and any other major winners from the last five years are also included in the field.

The top 12 and ties from last year's Masters tournament are allowed to return, as are the top four and ties from the other three majors in 2022, with every winner at a full-field PGA Tour event - the ones not played the same week as a major or one of the World Golf Championship events - over the past 12 months securing a spot.

Who is in the field for The Masters?

A spring tradition draws nearer. #themasters pic.twitter.com/fIpkXlWFs0 — The Masters (@TheMasters) April 2, 2023

The last three winners of The Players and all qualifiers for last season's Tour Championship earn their invite, plus the champions of five of the world's biggest amateur titles, while the Masters committee can invite a player who has not qualified.

Why can LIV Golf players compete?

Although the PGA Tour considers The Masters an official event, the tour has no jurisdiction over the field or how the tournament is run, allowing those banned by the tour to play at Augusta National.

LIV players to compete at The Masters

It will be the first time this season that LIV golfers will play alongside those from the tour, with a total of 18 competing, including Masters champions Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel.

Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau and Louis Oosthuizen are other major winners from LIV included among the field.

Who is likely to contend?

Scottie Scheffler is the most obvious contender. Not only is the 26-year-old American the defending champion, but he is world No 1 and in scintillating form after adding a sixth PGA Tour title to his career haul at The Players last month.

Rory McIlroy came in second to Scheffler last year, finishing three shots back after a brilliant final-round 64, with The Masters still the only major missing from his collection. Could this finally be the Northern Irishman's year as he looks to become just the sixth man to win the career Grand Slam?

Rory McIlroy on 19-putt round

Jon Rahm rounds off the world's top three, with the 2021 US Open winner certainly not to be discarded, while current major champions Smith, Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick will all be looking to impress.

Also keep an eye out for American pair Sam Burns and Cameron Young, who contested the final of the WCG-Dell Technologies Match Play last week, while Max Homa and Patrick Cantlay will be among the other names chasing major victory.

What is the prize money and how much does the winner get?

The prize money for the 2023 contest has yet to be confirmed, although last year's purse sat at $15m and Scheffler's victory earned him a cool $2.7m for his troubles.

is masters a pga tour event

A second-place finish was worth $1.62m, with third place still netting over a million dollars. If you finish in the top 10, a minimum of $400,000 is likely to be coming your way.

What is it like to go as a fan?

Mobile phones are strictly banned from the course, with even cameras banned outside of practice days. Anyone caught with any offending items is asked to leave the course. If a patron needs to make an emergency call, there are phone banks located around the course they can use.

Masters week is in motion. #themasters pic.twitter.com/QDFE10d0AN — The Masters (@TheMasters) April 3, 2023

Some of the other rules include patrons not being allowed to lie down on the grounds, while running is also forbidden. In terms of dress code, backward-facing hats are a strict no-no, jeans are not allowed and shoes must be worn at all times - with high heels and flip flops on the no list.

But while patrons may have rules to follow, they are far from short-changed in terms of the plentiful and affordable food and drink options available. The Pimento Cheese sandwich - a staple at Augusta - costs the small matter of $1.50! Sign me up.

Anything else I need to know?

Although golfing terminology largely remains the same as any other tournament, you may come across a few words and phrases during The Masters that may not be as familiar...

Amen Corner - That refers to the three-hole stretch from the 11th to 13th at Augusta National, seen as the most difficult section of the course. That is one of the bonus feeds available throughout the week live on Sky Sports.

Kelly and Sue Smith take on the 12th at Augusta

Azaleas - These are one of most famous plants on display at Augusta National and during The Masters. All the course's holes are named after trees or shrubs present at the golf course and one of the spots where azaleas are most prevalent is alongside the 13th hole, which bears its name.

Butler Cabin - Placed near the 18th hole, this is where The Masters winners are presented with their Green Jacket. Jack Nicklaus was the first, in 1965, to conduct his post-victory interview from inside this building.

Champions Dinner - The winner of last year's tournament hosts an exclusive dinner for all previous Masters champions, and chairman Fred Ridley, on the Tuesday night of the week of the Masters. Scottie Scheffler will continue that tradition this year.

Phil Mickelson waits to putt on the second green during the final round of the Masters golf tournament on Sunday, April 11, 2021, in Augusta, Ga. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum)

Crow's Nest - Located above the library and champions locker room, up a steep set of stairs and on the third floor of the Augusta National clubhouse, this a famous hideaway reserved only for amateurs competing at the tournament. Players to have stayed in the Crow's Nest as amateurs who later went on to win The Masters include Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods.

First and second nine - Rather than the 'front nine' or 'back nine' being used to describe the split in holes at Augusta National, they refer to holes one to nine as the 'first nine' and 10 to 18 as the 'second nine'. It's a small difference, sure, but adds to the unique prestige.

First cut - Augusta has what is referred to as the 'first cut' and 'second cut' when players miss the fairway, as opposed to the rough you would find at other golf courses.

Green Jacket - The concept of a 'Green Jacket' was first introduced in 1937 to help differentiate Augusta National members from other patrons. Since Sam Snead's victory in 1949, the winner of every Masters tournament has been rewarded one, with the jacket presented to the new champion by the winner of the previous year's tournament.

Hogan Bridge - This bridge takes players over Rae's Creek and to the green on the par-three 12th hole as part of 'Amen Corner'. It is named after Ben Hogan, to mark his record-setting low score of 274 for his four rounds at the 1953 tournament.

Honorary Starters - Most years at The Masters, a group of legendary golfers are invited to hit the ceremonial tee shots on the first hole to signal the start of the tournament. Last year Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson performed the role, with Watson the 11th to do so.

preview image

Magnolia Lane - This is perhaps the most famous driveway in all of America, welcoming the competing golfers to Augusta National in the most spectacular way. The road is 330 yards long, lined with magnolia trees on each side.

Patrons - This is what the people in attendance at The Masters are referred to, not fans or spectators.

Pine straw - The lush fairways and pristine greens may well be the best-known features of Augusta National, but covering the ground between many of the holes and at the base of a number of trees is pine straw, which makes for some tricky lies for players from time to time.

Rae's Creek - This is the daunting stretch of water that famously flows in front of the 12th green. At its widest inside Augusta National, the creek runs 60 feet wide and four feet deep. It is surrounded by golf's most colourful backdrop of blooming azaleas and dogwoods.

is masters a pga tour event

Sarazen Bridge - The first bridge at Augusta to be named after a player, done so to commemorate Gene Sarazen's 'Shot Heard Round the World'. It was unveiled in 1955 to mark the 20th anniversary of Sarazen's famous albatross at the 15th hole which is where the bridge resides.

Tea Olive - This is the name of the opening hole at Augusta National. In keeping with the tradition the naming of holes on the course, Tea Olive - a shrub native to eastern Asia - can be found on the right of the fairway and at the rear of the green. No Masters golfer has ever birdied the first hole in all four rounds.

A Decade On From 14-Year-Old Guan Tianlang's Masters Heroics - Where Is He Now?

The Chinese amateur made the cut at Augusta National a decade ago, but where has his career taken him since?

Guan Tianlang takes a shot during the 2013 Masters

The 2013 Masters is best remembered as the year Adam Scott claimed his first maiden Major win with a playoff victory over Angel Cabrera.

However, another, less celebrated player, made headlines of his own that week – Chinese player Guan Tianlang.

The amateur, who qualified for the tournament following a win in the 2012 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, made the cut and claimed the Silver Cup at Augusta National , eventually finishing 58th, but there was something even more extraordinary about that achievement – he was just 14-years-old at the time.

In fact, Tianlang made history just teeing it up in the tournament. In doing so, he became the youngest player to appear in The Masters, before going on to become the youngest to make a cut in a Major or PGA Tour event.

The fact those records have yet to be broken a decade later highlights just how remarkable they were. But what became of the teen who beat the previous youngest player to make the cut in a Major, Matteo Mannessero, by almost two years?

Two weeks after his record-breaking feats at Augusta National , Tianlang appeared in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on a sponsors exemption. However, despite once again making the cut, this time his finish wasn’t as impressive, coming last in the field.

Beyond that, other high-profile appearances, including a tie for 70th in the 2015 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, followed, although his career failed to take off in the manner many had assumed it would.

One of Tianlang’s most powerful attributes in 2013 was his success with anchoring the putter. Indeed, he found it so to his liking that he didn’t have a single three-putt during the tournament. Then, in 2016 came an amendment to the Rule 14-1b of the Rules of Golf , which approved an anchor ban that had initially been announced in 2012 and one of Tianlang’s most potent weapons was no more.

Could this have hindered Tianlang’s progress, or was it just a case of too much, too soon for the youngster? It’s unclear. However, what we do know is that in 2017 Tianlang joined the University of Arizona’s Wildcats golf team and still showed signs of progress, including recording the seventh best overall performance through the year by a Wildcats freshman.

After his sophomore year, he eventually turned pro in 2020 and began playing on the PGA Tour Series China and China Tour. The former tour disbanded in 2020, and Tianlang has more recently been found on the latter. Among his highlights has been a tie for fourth in the 2020 Volvo China Open. He also made six appearances on the Tour last year, the most recent of which came in December 2022, when he finished tied for 20th in the Chongqing Open.

Guan Tianlang has played on the China Tour in recent years

Will Tianlang emerge from the shadows to reclaim a place in the spotlight in the years to come? It’s not impossible. After all, even now he is only 24, while there are routes to both the DP World Tour and Asian Tour from the China Tour.

However, at World No.2883, it’s probably safer to assume that, for one of the players who shone brightest in that memorable Masters 10 years ago, it may just have been as good as it would ever get.

You won’t believe how much the Masters shop makes every hour…and how much Augusta are leaving on the table

is masters a pga tour event

The Masters may be one of the biggest golfing events of the year, but, according to one report, Augusta National leaves $250 million on the table.

Just before the start of the 2023 running,  sports finance website Huddle Up  released a study into the economics of the week and how, despite snaking queues at the merchandise stall, their beliefs leave behind a potential doubling of their revenue.

An audio version of this breakdown is also available via podcast. Apple: https://t.co/izQDnfSWyZ … Spotify: https://t.co/TRZrzd3waW … Enjoy! — Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) April 6, 2023

Reporter Joe Pompliano reveals that the carefully manicured fairways, pristine lawns and exclusivity ensures that patrons (for they are not fans) lead to the merchandise outlets taking “$1 million in revenue every single hour.”

The report explains that Augusta National is like no other golf organization. By registering as a for-profit organization, “they don’t get to claim tax-exempt status on their earnings, but it also means they don’t need to disclose the club’s income, holdings, membership list, renovation plans, ticket sales, or anything else.”

In 2022 analysts estimated the revenue to be :

The Masters Revenue Breakdown for 2022 (% of total)

  • Merchandise: $69 million (49%)
  • Tickets: $39 million (28%)
  • International TV rights: $25 million (18%)
  • Concessions: $8 million (5%)

Huddle Up suggests that, despite the long procession at the counter – spending $1million per hour at the stalls (an estimated $10million per day) – Augusta’s strict rule of trading via in-person sales only means they do not sell to the millions watching the event at home – a potential fortune that would rake in the profits.

Furthermore, although the pre-event balloting for tickets again gives the ‘exclusive Augusta’ feel, some lucky winners openly sell their tickets on the secondary market. Estimated selling for between 10-12 times the cover price, the report suggests Augusta could re-price at half the resale value and make another $145 million!

is masters a pga tour event

And then the most obvious of revenue streams – the domestic TV rights.

According to the report, “The Masters Tournament doesn’t currently make any money from domestic TV rights.”

“Instead, Augusta National allows ESPN and CBS to broadcast the tournament for free each year in exchange for full and complete control of TV production.”

Indeed, according to the Forbes report from the 2022 event, Augusta lags behind the U.S Open by around $90 million in terms of sponsorship and revenue from TV rights, with Augusta sticking with just six sponsors and no on-course advertising.

The exclusivity is there, but the Masters also look after its patrons.

Huddle Up suggests that when taking inflation into account, the Augusta menu has got cheaper over time – great for the attendees but, again, a likely loss of increased revenue.

Image

Huddle Up has produced a fascinating account into the estimated potential increase in revenue for Augusta National. However, the very appeal of the Masters is its singularity and the very individual way the organization runs each event.

Still, $250 million……

‘he didn’t say anything to me’ – max greyserman shares his perspective of matt kuchar’s controversial walkoff.

is masters a pga tour event

A few weeks ago, Matt Kuchar hit his drive left of the 18th fairway at Sedgefield Country Club as darkness began to threaten the conclusion of play on Sunday night at the Wyndham Championship.

His playing partners, Chad Ramey and Max Greyserman, were seemingly out of the hunt for first place and looking to finish the hole to get out of Greensboro, North Carolina. Kuchar, on the other hand, decided to mark his ball and tell the officials he was done playing for the night, opting to come back Monday to finish.

Kuchar spoke with the media that Sunday night, saying he was making that decision in part due to Greyserman.

“I was trying to set an example for Max, ” Kuchar said.

“W e were so far past when we should’ve stopped playing. We saw what Max did on hole 16 (four-putting for a double bogey) – they should’ve blown the horn there.

“I feel bad , the poor kid should’ve won this tournament. By me not playing, it may show Max he has an important shot to hit .”

While speaking with Dan Rappaport of Barstool Sports , Max Greyserman said he “ wasn’t sure why he said that ” while giving his version of what happened.

“H e said that he was trying to send a message to [Greyserman ]”, Rappaport said.

“N o, not at all, ” Greyserman replied. “ He didn’t say anything to me, to be honest. I’m not really sure why he said that in his post-round press conference .”

“W e go to 18 tee, it’s obviously very dark already. So, we walk up to the tee , we can’t see down the hill. It seems like he’s playing fast, and what you do when it’s getting dark is, you want to tee off, you want to finish, ” Greyserman added. “ It looked like he was just trying to get the tee in the ground and hit quickly , because it seems like he wanted to finish .”

“W e couldn’t see and there was no one telling us that there were people in the fairway. That wasn’t on purpose , we had no idea .”

“I tried to hole the shot, and if not, I can’t see anything, it doesn’t matter anyway, ” Greyserman added. “ So, I’m like, let’s just finish. I hit my shot, and I look over at Kuchar and he’s in the trees and he just marked his ball and never said really anything. We just keep going and he’s like, ‘ yeah , I’m going to come back in the morning .’

“I don’t really know why , again , he never said anything to me. Not sure why he said that in the media. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I think he needed TIO relief. Maybe that was going to take a lot of time, which is fine. For him to come out and say that he was trying to do something in service to me, I thought that was pretty strange .”

Max added that he was aware that Rai had made birdie on 17, meaning he was two behind with virtually no chance to win .

Kuchar did indeed need TIO relief, which would have taken some time.

Matt Kuchar said he wanted to send a message to Max Greyserman when he opted to come back Monday morning to finish the Wyndham. Here’s Max’s side: “He never said anything to me…for him to say he was trying to do something in service to me, I thought that was pretty strange.” pic.twitter.com/XecMTfRXCt — Dan Rapaport (@Daniel_Rapaport) August 22, 2024

The 46-year-old came back Monday morning and would eventually make par, which is a result that seemed unlikely if he were to finish Sunday night.

Pamela Anderson’s son has membership revoked from prestigious golf club

is masters a pga tour event

According to TMZ , Brandon Thomas Lee, who’s the son of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, was kicked out of Sherwood Country Club earlier this month.

Sherwood Country Club is an exclusive club in California set at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains with less than 400 members and has hosted the ZOZO Championship on the PGA Tour in the past.

The report indicates that Lee was kicked out for “bad behavior.”

Lee was allegedly driving too close to the green on the 13th hole when a homeowner on the property began to record him. The member then sent the video to the club and Lee’s membership was revoked, calling it the “final straw.”

Sources told TMZ that Brandon started screaming at the homeowner, and things got heated.

Time will tell which club Lee will move his shenanigans to in the future.

PGA Tour pro gives breakdown of the free stuff players get access to on tour

is masters a pga tour event

PGA Tour player, Michael Kim, has been incredibly engaging with fans over the past few years on his X account.

On Monday, Kim posted an answer to a question that he is frequently asked: What free stuff do professional golfers get access to?

Many of you asked what kind of free stuff we get access to so here’s a small breakdown: Golf clubs: If you play it during the tournament, it’s almost unlimited. Here’s details of Kim’s full breakdown below:

Many of you asked what kind of free stuff we get access to so here’s a small breakdown:

“ Golf clubs: If you play it during the tournament, it’s almost unlimited. If you’re a free agent, you can test whatever you want and mostly get anything you need. A new driver for five weeks in a row? It’s probably ok, but most don’t since it’s likely not going to be good for your scores. Putters? I’m sure at a certain point, they’ll say no, especially if it’s a limited quantity, but most companies are very willing to give you stuff as long as you’re serious about using them during the tournament. Free clubs sound super cool, and at first, you’re a kid in a toy store. But at a certain point, you get really numb to it all. The coolest putters and shafts all just blend in, and at the end of the day, they are just equipment to do my job the best that I can. I used to freak out about Circle Ts and whatnot, but as soon as I got free access, it wasn’t nearly as cool.

Golf balls: Titleist gives me 3 dozen every tournament week and during practice weeks, I ask them to send a shipment of balls and usually comes with 6-10 dozen boxes. That’ll last me for a while. I’ve never had them say no for some extra golf balls but I never ask for more than I need.

Travel: United airlines, Omni hotels, Avis car rentals are pgatour partners so we get decent status on those but some are more useful than others. Idk when the last time I flew United since I live in Dallas.

Other discounts include: FedEx, Bridgestone tires, BMW, At&T, Hyperice. They aren’t crazy discounts by any means but definitely is nice if you want any of their products or services.

Apparel: It REALLY depends on the company. Some are known to be very tough to deal with, and they won’t provide the clothing in a timely manner, and sometimes even the sizes are off. Or sometimes the logos are itchy or the wrong size. A player might not get the warm sweaters and stuff until like March when you don’t need it as much. If you have a great partner @DunningGolf it’s no problem!? I have plenty of clothes, but we don’t get it sent every week, and we definitely do laundry every week. We don’t get scripted outfits every week, as that’s usually just a Major thing. I’ve heard countless stories where guys have signed apparel deals for money but then got out of the deal and just worn free stuff that other companies have sent out because it’s way better quality and reliable.

Shoes: I have two shoes with me, and I’ll switch them out maybe once a month? Maybe every 1.5 months? Certain guys like Billy or JT match their shoes to their outfit and there’s a ton of style and color you can order . I’m on the side that doesn’t change THAT often so I’ve never heard, you’ve ordered too many in a yearr haha “

There you have it! It certainly pays off to be a professional.

Hideki Matsuyama withdraws from BMW Championship

Change Text Size

Hideki Matsuyama withdrew before his second round of the BMW Championship because of lower back pain.

"I am disappointed to have to withdraw from the BMW Championship after experiencing lower back discomfort while warming up this morning, which made it impossible to play today.," Matsuyama said in a statement Friday. "Thank you to BMW and the Western Golf Association for a great experience here at Castle Pines."

This was Matsuyama's first WD of the season after withdrawing five times over the prior three seasons as he has struggled with back trouble.

"We have good days and bad days," Matsuyama said last week.

He also won this year’s The Genesis Invitational, his first win in two years, and the Olympic bronze medal, and will be a leader of the International Team at next month’s Presidents Cup.
