Dan Victor Snaith is an electro musician, composer and recording artist from Ontario, Canada and is better known by stage name Caribou.

Caribou is one of the most iconic and recognisable name on the electro circuit. Originally, Snaith began his musical career under the name Manitoba, but soon adopted the facade of Caribou due to being threatened with a hefty lawsuit. He has two albums released under his first stage name, 'Start Breaking My Heart' and 'Up In Flames' which are adored by his early cult following and hailed by critics for the intelligent electro evident there.

The first Caribou release came in 2005 in the form of 'The Milk of Human Kindness', a quote taken from Shakespeare's Macbeth. This album saw Snaith's reputation increase dramatically as he began touring to support the release of the debut of which he is joined by a host of live musicians, and plays percussion. The line up is currently Ryan Smith, Brad Weber, and John Schmersal along with Dan, his live show is an immersive experience as opposed to a conventional gig, using complex video projection to support the tracks in his discography.

Snaith's second release 'Andorra' was another critical success, most notably winning the 2008 Polaris Music Prize whilst his third release 'Swim' was also short listed for the prize. His 2014 release 'Our Love' saw Caribou achieve his greatest commercial success in the US and native Canada due to his elevated status, reputation and accolades. Critics once again hailed the blends of R & B and hip hops influences with his slick brand of electro on singles such as 'Can't Do Without You'.

Live reviews

I‘ve seen Caribou twice before, both in smaller and I dare say better venues, but more on that later. So I went into this show with high expectations. in fact, Caribou has been among my best live show experiences.

Unfortunately Dan Snaith (and his 3 accompanying musicians) didn’t t deliver the same level of performance that I’ve come to expect from Caribou. Electronic music is hard to play live, it’s hard because it’s so easy. Too many DJs and EDM musicians lack musicianship because they’re programmers. It’s hard to convey the same level of energy and dynamism fiddling with levels and activating programmed beats as one gets from someone wielding an instrument. And yet, some groups do this well, some are great and then there’s Caribou. What has set him apart (and still does no matter my misgivings for this last show) is his ability to actually perform techno -- In that he is very much like LCD Soundsystem. The result is a spectacularly enfranchised version of techno.

Snaith (along with Smith, Weber and Schmersal) give you a techno experience like none other, wielding guitar, base, two drums kits and myriad apparatus more traditionally associated with electronic music. So why didn’t I get into the show at the Metropolis on November 10th? Because techno is all about flow and Caribou never hit his stride.

I believe the main culprit for this is his shift towards dance music. If you can’t appreciate the difference between techno and EDM than never mind. There were popier elements emerging on Swim but with his foray as Daphni, Snaith has been pushing the dancier side of his music and so Our Love is far more EDM than Techno. That isn’t a critic but in the 13 years since his first album, he has become very good at performing techno so its easy to notice his failure to integrate his new material into his older stuff.

There are glaring issues with pacing, mood and flow, which is three different ways of saying the same thing, his setlist was no good. To be more precise, he hasn’t yet developed a homogenous skill level between his various styles of music which would allow him to integrate those same various musical styles.

It didn’t help that more than half the crowd were talking throughout the show and uninvested in the music. The sound guy did a good job equalizing the show but had the volume so far down that the chatting from the crowd easily overwhelmed the band as though we were at a folk show!

But mostly, Caribou failed to create the right atmosphere. He never reached that level of groove where songs bounce off one another. Alternatively exciting and sedating you in order to build a crescendo of swelling emotion. He stumbled on his newer material, seeding them throughout in such a way as to throw cold water on any enthusiasm built=up through his earlier tracks.

With expectations of such levels of mastery is there any surprise I was disappointed? Well yes, because Caribou is that good, just not this time.

Daniel Victor Snaith’s brainchild, Caribou, uses layers of electronics to create a diverse range of sounds that will either make you want to dance to the rhythm or have a psychedelic freak out. Although Snaith is the sole composer of Caribou’s music, he often tours with a very talented backing band. The main core of Caribou’s compositions consists of synthesizers and electronics, but when Caribou performs live they incorporate electric guitars, a bass, and acoustic drums, which create a more rich and lively tone. When Caribou performs live they stress that attention should be focused on the music and not the performers. When I saw Caribou open for Radiohead in 2012 all the performing members were dressed in identical white attire. This emphasized that the performance had little to do about the individual performers, but rather Caribou was a united vessel delivering a form of music that is organically created and which should be the main focus.

The light designs have been known to be fantastic at Caribou shows with strobe lights flashing on and off synchronized to the rhythm of the beat. The crowd is also very responsive to the music ecstatically dancing away like they were in a club scene. The music is often composed of melodies that repeat themselves, but are always changing texture and gradually building into more elaborate sounds rewarding the audience that pays attention to each intricate subtlety. Caribou remains a master at synthesizing the most pleasantly catchy tunes that will mesmerize you into a psychedelic trance and transcend you into another dimension of music.

Caribou is a MUST SEE experience. The band has fun and keeps the crowd dancing the entire time! Also, a lot of the songs have a different sort of live improvisation that the recordings on the LP do not have. Dan Snaith switches off from playing the synth to drums and back multiple times which I happened to find very unexpected. Overall the experience of driving three hours East from San Antonio to Houston to catch this show and drive back the same night was amazing. Caribou made the drive definitely worth it and had me moving the whole time. Do not miss them!

I went to this gig expecting nothing (not knowing the last album but knowing that their first album was awesome.) It has to be said like this : Caribou live is mind-blowing, delivering a unique tasteful performance and making everyone willing to dance starting the first song. Needless to say I'll run to the next concert !

Caribou consistently puts on amazing live shows. And this one in particular was special b/c I was close enough to the stage to see that he was smiling after every single song. Love like that for what you're doing can't help but be contagious!

Caribou always put on a good show, and I knew they wouldn't disappoint. They kept the crowd going and moving with a good mix of their best old jams and a lot of their new ones! Don't ever miss out on seeing them when they are in your city!

Caribou announces North American tour dates

Dan Snaith, aka Caribou , announces his upcoming North American tour, scheduled for late fall 2021 and early 2022. Originally scheduled for spring 2020, the new dates mark the first shows for Caribou’s acclaimed album Suddenly .

Fans across the States and Canada can hear it all live starting this November, with dates picking back up in February 2022. Pre-sale begins on May 13 at 10am local, with general on-sale scheduled for May 14 at 10am local.

After a stream of well-received singles (“ Home ,” “ You and I ,” and “ Never Come Back ”), Suddenly arrived on February 26, 2020, with a title almost too apt for what followed its release; just a few weeks later, the world changed practically overnight. Caribou’s return, an upbeat and soothing record meant to soundtrack either a night out or a day inside, was instantly relegated to the latter. That didn’t stop Suddenly  from resonating with the masses throughout 2020, ultimately landing on year-end best-of lists from Billboard, Aquarium Drunkard, Slate, Consequence, Stereogum, Bandcamp, BrooklynVegan, All Things Go, and many others.

Released this year on March 12, Suddenly Remixes features 12 reworkings of Suddenly  tracks by an all-star cast of producers and friends including Four Tet , Floating Points , Morgan Geist , Toro y Moi , and Jessy Lanza .

Caribou Announces Tour, Shares New Song “Broke My Heart”: Listen

Caribous Dan Snaith

Caribou is back with another new song, plus news of a tour that extends into next year. “ Broke My Heart ” follows April’s single “ Honey .” “I always find it hard to believe those ‘it came to me in a dream’ stories about songs arriving fully formed, but this one was pretty close to that, which is not how it usually goes for me,” said Dan Snaith. “I sat down at a piano one day and the string riff was just there at my fingertips and the vocal melody followed right behind it.” Listen to it below.

Snaith’s headlining Caribou tour begins with shows in Tokyo and Amsterdam in October before he returns for a North American leg in November. The second leg starts in Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 8 and wraps in Montreal, Quebec, on November 25. Opening select dates are Yunè Pinku and Joy Orbison . In February 2025, Caribou will fly back to Europe for eight additional concerts. Check out Caribou’s complete list of tour dates below.

After putting out Suddenly in 2020, Caribou rolled out a remix version of that album , featuring contributions from Toro y Moi, Jessy Lanza, Four Tet, Floating Points, and others. Back in August 2021, Snaith also dropped the Caribou single “ You Can Do It ” with a delightful video of dogs leaping for frisbees.

Caribou

It was March of 2020, and Dan Snaith was ready to tour. The beloved producer had released the fifth studio album under his Caribou moniker, Suddenly , in late February, and in a London warehouse Snaith and the three musicians he plays live with were dialing in the live show that they were about to hit the road with. We all know what happened next.

“Every day was getting a little bit weirder,” the supremely friendly Snaith says via Zoom from his home in London. “The news was getting a bit more troubling.”

The tour was scheduled to begin on March 16, 2020 in Hamilton, Ontario. It was only a few days prior that the reality of the pandemic set in for Snaith, his band and most every other person on the planet. “The day we were supposed to pack everything up and go to the airport the next morning to get on a flight, I remember us all sitting there and just looking at each other like, “None of this is happening, is it?’” Snaith recalls.

So instead of flying to Canada to launch the 30-date Suddenly tour, instead, Snaith says, “Everybody just went home. I’ll always remember that moment in this big, empty hangar, with the four band members and two crew just sitting there, looking at each other.”

In London, Snaith settled into a bubble with his wife and their two young daughters, with most of the family’s time dedicated to homeschooling. (“Definitely I have come to appreciate children being in education, because man, that was like a full-time thing,” he says.) Caribou finally emerged for its first live show since lockdown this past August at the Green Man festival in Wales, where Snaith’s youngest daughter – who’s now 5 and has spent a big chunk of her life in lockdown — finally realized that her dad wasn’t just a guy who taught school lessons and tinkered on music in the basement.

“She came to our first show,” Snaith says, “and she was just like, ‘What? This is what you do?’”

Now, 20 months after the Suddenly tour was originally intended to begin, Caribou is finally on the road. The rescheduled tour kicked off Monday night (November 15) at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Here, on a crisp fall evening that required jackets, hats and dancing to keep warm, thousands of fans gathered for Caribou’s exultant live show, an experience made even more resonant by having been deprived of live music for so long.

The band, dressed in all white and featuring Snaith, a drummer and two guitarists, performed a smart, focused, career-spanning set featuring his like “Odessa,” “Can’t Do Without You,” “Your Love Will Set You Free” and “Sun” — the latter of which expanded into a spatial, heady and ultimately joyous extended jam of drums, keyboards and guitar that had people dancing in the aisles and hands lifted in triumph in both the audience and on the stage. The show also featured music from the new album, with the warmly analog single “Home” arriving in the encore, along with the August sonic vitamin C injection of a single “You Can Do It.”

The tour continues tonight in Boulder, CO and extends for the next 16 evenings, as Caribou finally migrates across the United States and Canada. Below, Snaith talks about his experiences getting back on stage and heading out on the road again.

Were you devastated by having to cancel the 2020 tour, or did you just have to shift gears so quickly that you didn’t have time to be upset about what might have been?

Exactly, yeah. I moved on super-fast, because there were obviously more pressing and important things going on. It was just like, “Okay, it’s obvious now that’s not the world we’re living in. We’re living in this new world.”

There were reminders throughout the year. People would be in touch and be like, “Oh man, today would have been Coachella,” or “today would have been Glastonbury,” or “today would have been the day that I saw you at the show” in wherever this person lives. I was just like, “Man, I’m not tuned into that at all.”

I found it interesting that people were still remembering those dates. Like, somebody put it in their calendar, and it came up and they were like, “I wonder how Dan is?” I was just like, “This is irrelevant next to what’s happening in the world,” obviously. But it was nice that people checked in — because some people’s work wasn’t as affected by the pandemic as live musicians, obviously. But that wasn’t where my headspace was at all.

This tour schedule seems a bit aggressive. In total, you’re playing 18 nights in a row. Do you feel physically ready, after this period of not being on the road, to really go full throttle into playing live?

I mean, I love it. I love touring and playing shows every night. The other option is like, driving from somewhere to somewhere else, you know? Some of our bandmates are like, “Dan, we don’t have to add a show every night,” but I just always want to be playing. This is how the original tour was scheduled also — never a day off, and playing as many shows as we can. I just live for it. I really, really love it. And I do feel physically ready for it.

Is touring something you actually have to physically train for, particularly after so much time off the road, or does adrenaline just kick in and carry you forward?

There’s so much adrenaline. Touring is a combination of a lot of sitting around and waiting for things to happen and then doing lots of things really fast: playing the show, packing everything up, talking to everybody. There are a few hours every night that are just a total high.

I was having a conversation recently with this woman, Elkka, who was our tour support for the U.K. tour we just did. She was like, “How do you get to sleep? I got back to the hotel after the show and I was just like, ‘I’m supposed to go to sleep now?'” It’s just such a buzz that I don’t do anything to prepare for it; it just kind of happens. And we’ve done it so much that it’s just a really comfortable rhythm as well.

Now that you finally have the chance to play Suddenly live, how is the album translating to the live setting?

We’d worked up all the songs in February and March of last year, and we were like, “I think this will work really well and fit with the other songs we play from previous albums.”

But the thing that’s different is — there’s the normal cycle bands go through of making an album, releasing an album and touring immediately. You normally get this thing where the first night you play some of the new songs and maybe people are like, “Oh yeah, I like that song.” And then gradually over the course of the tour, people have the chance to become familiar with the music by listening to the album on their own. It takes a while for them to be like, “Oh, I really love this moment of this song.”

Now there’s this huge gap between the album coming out and playing it. I wondered if this was going to feel like old news by the time we go out and play these songs. The world of music moves pretty fast. But then what actually happened when we started playing shows was — with some of the new songs, we were just like, “Whoa, people really, really know this song.”

How has your relationship to the music changed?

That’s a good question, because normally I never listen to an album after it comes out. I only know the songs through the live versions we do — which I get to know very well, obviously. The album came out, and then there was just this silence, where I didn’t listen to them at all and didn’t look back. I didn’t hear those songs at all until, “Oh my god, we’re going to play a show and need to start rehearsing them again.”

That must be a strange experience.

The oddest thing about the album for me is that I made this album called Suddenly , because it’s about me having to adjust to sudden, unexpected changes in my personal life during the time I was making it. There was a death in the family. My father had a terminal illness. He has recently passed on as well. There was divorce and all these various mid-life things. It was this idea of like, “Okay, this has all shown me that I kind of have some kind of tool kit to respond to sudden, unexpected things happening and to make something positive out of it.” The music [on the album] is kind of a manifestation of that — taking these unexpected shocks and making something that’s comforting and nourishing out of them.

Then, that’s exactly the circumstance everybody was listening to the music in. Instead of having feedback from people when I’d go out and play it at a show, people would say, “I listened to the album.” I was getting feedback that way. I’d get these messages from people online that were like, “This album is somehow perfect for me at the place I’m in right now. It’s helping me so much.”

I get quite emotional thinking about that, because that is the ultimate thing that you want. That was the purpose of the music, and if it fulfilled that purpose in people’s lives, it’s just incredibly beautiful.

Did you make any new music during lockdown that’s being incorporated into this tour?

I made a bunch of music, and most of it is still in an unfinished demo phase where I’m working away at it. But the one piece of music that did come out this summer is the track “You Can Do It.”

That song is pure joy!

Yeah, exactly. Again, this kind of illustrates how much of a naive optimist I am. I made that song at the moment — around March of this year — when people I knew were starting to be vaccinated. I’m also just a big believer in science. I’m so inspired by the way that — obviously there’s been good and bad in the response to this — but the ability to take a new disease and make an effective vaccine for it, and something like seven and a half billion doses have already been put in people’s arms a year and a half later. That’s incredible.

In the song, that mantra is me like, willing an optimistic way out of it. Obviously, it’s been slightly bumpier than I hoped it would be. That was before the Delta variant, and at that time, cases were coming down and it looked like we might do shows again. And just the joyousness [of this song], this kind of unashamedly joyous tone — initially I thought, in a kind of cynical music industry way, that I might save the song and wait till I’ve finished an album and make it the single. But it was like, “No, this song has to come out now.” This is the moment the song is about. People have had so much fear, anxiety and negativity in the last 18 months; the thought of being able to put something out into the world that was just positive, that just allowed people to feel happy and joyous again, was something that felt so right. That’s why that song came out.

It must feel victorious in ways to get out and play this music for people.

Well, yeah, because [ Suddenly ] is melancholy in places, but I’m endlessly this person who is trying to see the silver lining and trying to make something positive. That is the function music fulfills in my life. It’s the thing that allows me to take something difficult and find some kind of euphoria or release or optimism out of it. That is what music has always done for me.

And so again, playing these songs live, it just feels like translating all that… I mean, I may be projecting this, maybe everybody else was like, “When are these guys going to be done?” but I had that feeling that it kind allowed people to feel a sense of community again, when they’re at the shows. It’s so, so lucky to get to do this. When it’s gone away for so long, the ability to play music together and be together, you just appreciate it so much more when it returns.

All the songs Gracie Abrams sings on her Secret of Us tour: Setlist

Portrait of KiMi Robinson

LOS ANGELES — Gracie Abrams sings like she's letting you in on a secret.

It’s one that she shares with her fans on her 54-city (and counting) Secret of Us tour promoting her sophomore album of the same name. The record released following a massive year that saw Abrams head out on her third headlining tour, open for Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour (a role she will reprise in Swift's final North American shows later this year) and receive her first Grammy nomination for her debut album.

As she belts out lyrics about budding romance and love gone sour and all the confusing vicissitudes in between, Abrams at times appears to be transported back to the room where she wrote her songs while "feeling very big feelings in a very short period of time," as she describes it. In other moments, she’s here with fans as they scream her lyrics back to her in catharsis.

And, by the end of the set, all she feels is "Free Now."

We’ll be taking the temperature of all facets of life in the country by being at the heart of the action, and demonstrating the breadth of World Service content across news, culture and science programming. — Gwenan Roberts, Commissioning Editor, BBC World Service

The BBC World Service has announced that it will be touring the United States this September, bringing audiences live programming from Atlanta, Portland and St. Louis.

In the lead up to the US election, and working with partner stations across the US, The Roadshow will feature special broadcasts from Newshour, The Arts Hour on Tour and Unexpected Elements.

The Roadshow is a partnership between BBC World Service and US distributor American Public Media (APM).

Gwenan Roberts, Commissioning Editor, BBC World Service, says: “We are thrilled to announce The Roadshow where we will bring three beloved BBC World Service programmes on a tour of the US, in what is a critical time for the country as it prepares to head to the polls in November.”

“We’ll be taking the temperature of all facets of life in the country by being at the heart of the action, and demonstrating the breadth of World Service content across news, culture and science programming.”

Two months ahead of the US election, BBC Newshour will be touring the country to explore key issues at the forefront of voters’ minds.

On 9 September, James Menendez’s first stop is St. Louis, in the state of Missouri. Having voted red six elections in a row, Missouri is now considered a Republican stronghold. So what are some of the pressing issues and concerns for people living here ahead of the US election? James Menendez takes a closer look before broadcasting live to the BBC’s global audience from the studio of BBC World Service partner station, St Louis Public Radio (STLPR).

On 11 September, Tim Franks then heads to the US city of Atlanta, the state capital of Georgia, which is considered one of six key swing states for the 2024 US Elections. He heads out around the city to explore the issues influencing voters before hosting BBC Newshour live from the studio of BBC World Service partner station, WABE 90.1 FM.

Then on 17 September, James Menendez’s next stop is the city of Portland in the state of Oregon – a state that has historically voted Democrat. He talks to people across the city ahead of the US Election, before broadcasting live from the studio of BBC World Service partner station, Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

The Arts Hour on Tour

The Arts Hour on Tour, the BBC World Service English programme that showcases arts, culture and creativity around the world, kicks off The Roadshow in Atlanta.

On 7 September, Nikki Bedi will be joined on stage at WABE* by artists who call the city home, including Tayari Jones, whose novel, “An American Marriage”, made the New York Times bestseller list and won The Women’s Prize for Fiction. Also, the Emmy Award-winning Horne Brothers will be on stage, whose documentary, ‘The South Got Something To Say’, looks at the rise of the hip hop scene in the city. This programme will be broadcast on the BBC World Service on 21 September.

On 10 September, The Arts Hour on Tour then heads to their second stop, the city of St. Louis in the state of Missouri. Nikki Bedi will be joined on stage at Touhill Performing Arts Centre by creatives from across the city, with a live music performance from Dylan Triplett and Tonina Saputo, stand-up comedy from Tina Dybal and conversation with artists Damon Davis and Dail Chambers. This programme will be broadcast on the BBC World Service on 28 September.

Unexpected Elements

Concluding the tour on 19 September, BBC’s Marnie Chesterton heads to Portland in the state of Oregon as Unexpected Elements goes on the road for the first time, recording the programme in front of a live audience at BBC World Service partner, OPB. Marnie is joined on stage by a panel of journalists and experts to delve into the scientific stories and connections emerging from Portland and beyond.

Guests include journalist Chhavi Sachdev, and OPB’s Jes Burns, producer of the Northwest science show "All Science. No Fiction.”, with more guests to be announced.

The programmes featured in The Roadshow will broadcast on BBC World Service English on radio and online to millions of listeners worldwide and will be available on BBC Sounds or wherever you receive your BBC programming.

Ahead of the Open Evening on Thursday 3 October, we are offering school tours for prospective September 2025 Year 7 students and one parent. The tour will take approximately 40 minutes and it is an opportunity to see the school in action, ask questions, talk to students.

Booking is essential and tours are only available to:
