Jimmy Buffett (born December 25, 1946) is an American ‘gulf and western’, rock, surf, and country singer, songwriter, business man, and author, hailing from Pascagoula, Mississippi, U.S.

Having started his musical life playing the trombone in his high school band, Buffett moved on to play the guitar in his freshman year at Auburn University. With the release of his debut album “Down to Earth” in 1970, Buffet continued to grace the streets and beaches with his busking, honing his skills and developing the beach-bum persona he later became known for.

Jimmy Buffett’s second studio album “High Cumberland Jubilee” was lost by his label Barnaby, and didn’t appear until 1976. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with ABC-Dunhill Records who issued the albums “White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean” in 1973, and the more thoughtful “Living and Dying in 3/4 Time” in 1974. However, it wasn’t until the 1977 album “Changes in Latitudes”, led by the Top Ten single “Margaritaville”, that Buffett truly became a household name for his tropically-themed soft rock.

By the mid-1980s, with dwindling chart sales but a devoted and prominent fan base dubbed the “Parrotheads”, Buffet would tour regularly, and later tried his hand club management and fiction writing. The live album “Feeding Frenzy” was issued in 1990, followed by the best-selling box set “Boats, Bars, and Ballads” in 1992. An album of original material “Fruitcakes” became one of Buffett’s fastest-selling albums, and paved the way for the almost-as-successful “Barometer Soup” in 1995 and “Banana Wind” in 1996.

Towards the end of the millennium having worked on a musical adaptation of the Herman Wouk novel “Don’t Stop the Carnival”, Buffet released “Beach House on the Moon” and “Live: Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday”. After creating his own label Mailboat and releasing a string of concert recordings, Buffet returned with new material, issuing “Far Side of the World” in 2002. The ever-popular musician went on to release the album “License to Chill” in 2004, “Take the Weather with You” in 2006, and “Buffett Hotel” in 2009.

Live reviews

Jimmy Buffett puts on an amazing show! From the second you get there you're surrounded by some of the most colorful people you'll ever see. Everybody brings their own bit of Margaritaville with them. Some first time attendees walk around bearing "Buffett Virgin" signs. From cars turned into boats, to homemade beaches, to bartenders throwing snowballs, to men in coconut bras, the parking lot party is best described as a drunken free-for-all fueled by tropical drinks. You will see things there that you will never see anywhere else. There is no party like a Jimmy Buffett tailgate party. Once inside, make sure to watch out for beach balls, because they will be flying everywhere. Once the concert starts, Buffett does not disappoint. The man is lively and exciting, jokes with the crowd, and obviously loves what he does. Only at one of his concerts will you ever see thousands of grown adults all pretending to be sharks for the song "Fins." Buffett's back-up, The Coral Reefer Band is fantastic. Nadirah in particular has an unbelievable voice, and the amazing steel drum playing will immediately bring you down to some far away island. Mr. Buffett keeps the setlist interesting with a mix of old favorites ("Cheeseburger in Paradise" in particular brings a huge response from the crowd) new songs, and even a few covers. His cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" is an old throwback, but Buffett has recently taken to performing Zac Brown Band's "Free." This song especially is a feel-good, magical one. In short, a Jimmy Buffett concert is one of the best, most unbelievable experiences a person can have, and makes for a night you'll never forget. Fins up!

Jimmy Buffett July 8, 2017, Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

This was Buffet's 50th show at Riverbend. I've been to 25 of them by my count. My fiscal year begins and ends with the Jimmy Buffett show in Cincinnati. This year was the exception to the rule and it really had nothing to do with Jimmy Buffett. Riverbend allowed so many tailgaters in who had no tickets or intention of going to the show, That when actual ticket holders started showing up at 6 PM, there was no place for us to park. So Riverbend had no choice but to just let us sit on the bridge. From the time we arrived and could actually see the Riverbend, it took us three hours to get in and finally find a parking spot. But then they didn't even have personnel out there trying to help concert goers get in and get parked. They had abandoned everyone. Drivers were left to unload all of the passengers and continue on in the motionless parking line. Always thought I would go to Jimmy Buffett shows until he quit touring, But after this, I will not be attending another Jimmy Buffett show at Riverband ever again. I pay too much money to miss half the show. If he tours next year, I will check him out somewhere that has a better grasp on their parking situation.

Veteran country rocker Jimmy Buffett still has the ability to transport audiences to his private paradise island with his surf style music. Well into his 60s, the star knows the influence that his easy listening music has had on people's lives and the crowd is made up of original fans as well as new coverts who may have been brought up listening to Buffett's music.

Jimmy is completely at ease onstage and performs with a huge smile on his face throughout the show. The audience's enthusiasm spurs him on as they sing, cheer and applaud throughout. There are roars of approval for fan favourites including 'Come Monday' and 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes'. The musician still has an impressive amount of skill with his guitar and his supporting band are also incredibly well trained.

The set is only punctuated by Jimmy himself conversing with his crowds with stories and meanings of songs. He has of course been touring for over four decades so he knows how to tease the crowd before he allows his band to begin the introduction to 'Margaritaville'. This is a wonderfully inclusive conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Buffet's paradise.

I first saw Jimmy Buffet back in 1993. I was 14 years old and it made a huge impression on me at that age.

Back then the parrot heads were much younger, wilder, and drunker. It was like a mini mardie gras and it was tons of fun. I saw him again this year and their was a huge crowd but the parrot heads were older and more toned down. It still had all of the same kinds of things but just more toned down. You didn’t see as many flashing women or really drunk people. But the music was still great.

He did all of his hits, the same ones he has been doing for almost 4 decades. He sounded great and he did show some age. He played for more than two hours and ended with a cover song of “Brown Eyed Girl”. His band sounded great and they were really tight.

He continues to attract tons of people to his shows and does not have any problem selling out shows every summer. It is really amazing that he can still do that considering he has not had any new hit songs in more than 20 years. But the old shows of the 1980’s and 1990’s are missed.

Great Show Saturday Night in Cigal in Paris, amazing athmosphere, Jimmy with his 14 piece Talented band Nailed it firmy to the mast with a great seletion of old and new songs including a great solo to end the night well worth the trip, Paris, sunny weekend,Parrotheads how could you not love it cant wait until next year, Gerry

the concert was absolutely awesome. the venue was good as well. Jimmy Buffett still can keep people on their feet and involved in the shows!! I would go again. The crew members for the venue were very organized and knowledgeable of the facility. We got in to our seats without a problem. It was good that there were plenty of restrooms on all floors.

Got home to find he was playing in Seattle! Booked tickets for 4 and had the time of our lives! Two Buffett concerts in a month? A dream come true! Come back, Jimmy!!!

I have wanted to see Jimmy Buffett since I first heard him 38 years ago. And I finally got the change at La Cigale in Paris - Excellent venue and excellent seating. The concert was amazing. He has a certain style and attracts a certain crowd that can't help but project a feel-good factor. He is still rocking. See you next year Jimmy

Jimmy did an outstanding job in KC. He played many songs i had not heard at his concerts before. He did a duet with Carolina Jones Trip Around the Sun which is one of my favorites. He filled the house and the Parrotheads were rocking. Jommy never fails to play the standards everyone knows & loves. Just glad he is still touring!

A year ago, we learned the sad news that one of America’s most beloved performers, Jimmy Buffett, lost his fight against cancer. He left behind a devoted fan base, surfing and boating friends, business associates, and a legacy of charitable generosity.

He also left behind a remarkable band. Coral Reefer band members and friends are coming together for a Parrothead Celebration!

Jimmy Buffett, legendary ‘Margaritaville' singer, dies at age 76

“jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of september 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement posted to buffett’s official website and social media pages said late friday, by mark kennedy | the associated press • published september 2, 2023 • updated on september 2, 2023 at 6:21 pm.

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett , who popularized beach bum soft rock with the escapist Caribbean-flavored song “Margaritaville” and turned that celebration of loafing into an empire of restaurants, resorts and frozen concoctions, has died. He was 76.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement posted to Buffett’s official website and social media pages said late Friday. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

The statement did not say where Buffett died or give a cause of death. Illness had forced him to reschedule concerts in May and Buffett acknowledged in social media posts that he had been hospitalized, but provided no specifics.

“Margaritaville,” released on Feb. 14, 1977, quickly took on a life of its own, becoming a state of mind for those ”wastin’ away,” an excuse for a life of low-key fun and escapism for those “growing older, but not up.”

The song is the unhurried portrait of a loafer on his front porch, watching tourists sunbathe while a pot of shrimp is beginning to boil. The singer has a new tattoo, a likely hangover and regrets over a lost love. Somewhere there is a misplaced salt shaker.

“What seems like a simple ditty about getting blotto and mending a broken heart turns out to be a profound meditation on the often painful inertia of beach dwelling,” Spin magazine wrote in 2021. “The tourists come and go, one group indistinguishable from the other. Waves crest and break whether somebody is there to witness it or not. Everything that means anything has already happened and you’re not even sure when.”

Why Blake Shelton relates to Travis Kelce & Taylor Swift's romance

The song — from the album “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” — spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at No. 8. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016 for its cultural and historic significance, became a karaoke standard and helped brand Key West, Florida, as a distinct sound of music and a destination known the world over.

“There was no such place as Margaritaville,” Buffett told the Arizona Republic in 2021. “It was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work and then come back and spend time by the beach.”

The song soon inspired restaurants and resorts, turning Buffett’s alleged desire for the simplicity of island life into a multimillion brand. He landed at No. 13 in Forbes’ America’s Richest Celebrities in 2016 with a net worth of $550 million.

Music critics were never very kind to Buffett or his catalogue, including the sandy beach-side snack bar songs like “Fins,” “Come Monday” and “Cheeseburgers in Paradise.” But his legions of fans, called “Parrotheads,” regularly turned up for his concerts wearing toy parrots, cheeseburgers, sharks and flamingos on their heads, leis around their necks and loud Hawaiian shirts.

“It’s pure escapism is all it is,” he told the Republic. “I’m not the first one to do it, nor shall I probably be the last. But I think it’s really a part of the human condition that you’ve got to have some fun. You’ve got to get away from whatever you do to make a living or other parts of life that stress you out. I try to make it at least 50/50 fun to work and so far it’s worked out.”

His special Gulf Coast mix of country, pop, folk and rock added instruments and tonalities more commonly found in the Caribbean, like steel drums. It was a stew of steelpans, trombones and pedal steel guitar. Buffett’s incredible ear for hooks and light grooves were often overshadowed by his lyrics about fish tacos and sunsets.

Rolling Stone, in a review of Buffett’s 2020 album “Life on the Flip Side,” gave grudging props. “He continues mapping out his surfy, sandy corner of pop music utopia with the chill, friendly warmth of a multi-millionaire you wouldn’t mind sharing a tropically-themed 3 p.m. IPA with, especially if his gold card was on the bar when the last round came.”

Buffett’s evolving brand began in 1985 with the opening of a string of Margaritaville-themed stores and restaurants in Key West, followed in 1987 with the first Margaritaville Café nearby. Over the course of the next two decades, several more of each opened throughout Florida, New Orleans and California.

The brand has since expanded to dozens of categories, including resorts, apparel and footwear for men and women, a radio station, a beer brand, ice tea, tequila and rum, home décor, food items like salad dressing, Margaritaville Crunchy Pimento Cheese & Shrimp Bites and Margaritaville Cantina Style Medium Chunky Salsa, the Margaritaville at Sea cruise line and restaurants, including Margaritaville Restaurant, JWB Prime Steak and Seafood, 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill and LandShark Bar & Grill.

There also was a Broadway-bound jukebox musical, “Escape to Margaritaville,” a romantic comedy in which a singer-bartender called Sully falls for the far more career-minded Rachel, who is vacationing with friends and hanging out at Margaritaville, the hotel bar where Sully works.

James William Buffett was born on Christmas day 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and raised in the port town of Mobile, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and went from busking the streets of New Orleans to playing six nights a week at Bourbon Street clubs.

He released his first record, “Down To Earth,” in 1970 and issued seven more on a regular yearly clip, with his 1974 song “Come Monday” from his fourth studio album “Living and Dying in ¾ Time,” peaking at No. 30. Then came “Margaritaville.”

He performed on more than 50 studio and live albums, often accompanied by his Coral Reefer Band, and was constantly on tour. He earned two Grammy Award nominations, two Academy of Country Music Awards and a Country Music Association Award.

Buffett was actually in Austin, Texas, when the inspiration struck for “Margaritaville.” He and a friend had stopped for lunch at a Mexican restaurant before she dropped him at the airport for a flight home to Key West, so they got to drinking margaritas.

“And I kind of came up with that idea of this is just like Margarita-ville,” Buffett told the Republic. “She kind of laughed at that and put me on the plane. And I started working on it.”

He wrote some on the plane and finished it while driving down the Keys. “There was a wreck on the bridge,” he said. "And we got stopped for about an hour so I finished the song on the Seven Mile Bridge, which I thought was apropos.”

Buffett also was the author of numerous books including “Where Is Joe Merchant?” and “A Pirate Looks At Fifty” and added movies to his resume as co-producer and co-star of an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s novel “Hoot.”

Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Savannah and Sarah; and son, Cameron.

Son of a Sailor Fest: Mobile celebrates Jimmy Buffett’s joy of life

  • Published: Sep. 18, 2024, 3:23 p.m.

Jimmy Buffett was born in Pascagoula but grew up in Mobile, and made some of his earliest recordings there.

Mobile mourned Jimmy Buffett in September 2023. It also strutted, sashayed and danced down Dauphin Street in a celebration that grew from an impromptu notion into something unexpectedly momentous .

Now it’s time to add another verse to that song: On Saturday, Sept. 21, Mobile will follow up with the inaugural Son of a Sailor Fest, a free, family-friendly street festival that will feature a second-line parade and an afternoon of music in Cathedral Square.

The program is straightforward. Want to be in the parade? People are welcome to gather in the courtyard of the Riverview Plaza hotel as early as 10 a.m.; the Blow House Band will lead the procession to Cathedral Square at 11:15.

Music on the main stage in the square starts with Street Folks at noon followed by Vibe Irie at 1:30 p.m. Buffett collaborator and native Mobilian Will Kimbrough will take the stage at 3:30 to share “Songs and Stories from the Studio.” At 5:30 p.m. A1A, billed as the official Jimmy Buffett tribute band, begins its headlining performance.

There’ll be more music at a SouthSounds Showcase Stage set up in Dauphin Street at the Joachim Street intersection. Disco Lemonade plays at 2 p.m. followed by Laurie Anne Nix at 3:30 and Eric Salter & The Sunday Sinners at 5 p.m. (Details on all the performers, and a wealth of other information including details on lodging, dining and VIP options, can be found at the event website )

It promises to be a festive occasion. And it well should be, given that backers include the city, the county, Visit Mobile, the Downtown Mobile Alliance, and an array of business partners – not to mention that Lucy Buffett, one of Jimmy’s sisters, also is among the sponsors. And with any luck, it’ll still have some of the spontaneous vibe that made 2023’s parade feel so special.

That spontaneity was the element that raised the biggest questions for Joseph Brennan, the Buffett fan whose grassroots efforts (with help from many eager supporters) snowballed into the 2023 event. He said the discussion about carrying on with a potential annual event began almost immediately afterward.

“Visit Mobile has been a huge partner in this and David Clark and his team met with me probably last October and November,” Brennan said. “And they said, ‘How can we make this happen?’ And to be honest with you at that time, I was looking back at them saying, ‘You tell me, I don’t know. I’m a freelance videographer, what do I know?’”

He did have some thoughts, however. “There had to be a second-line parade and it had to be free,” he said. “It needed to still be a community-energized event. Because what was magical about last year was that sort of grassroots, egalitarian approach. As much as we can try to maintain that magic, we should.”

The parade along Dauphin Street drew hundreds of participants.

Joseph Brennan, a Mobile filmmaker whose idea for an open foot parade honoring Jimmy Buffett, smiles as he takes in the huge turnout on Sept. 10, 2023. Lawrence Specker | [email protected]

The 2023 event was “lightning in a bottle,” Brennan said. That couldn’t be planned.

“But what we can do is, we can take what was special about that day and use that as our sort of north star -- our principles of magic, fun, spontaneity and color, joy, and say, OK, well, these’ll be the pillars of what this event is about. Even if you’re not a huge parrothead, it’s a day of like concentrated Gulf Coast fun and laissez faire joy of life.

“And that sort of became, like I said, our north star,” Brennan said. “You know, as much as I am a huge fan of Jimmy Buffett, I knew that it couldn’t singularly be a memorial. It had to be larger. And where we kind of landed was, what did he represent? He was a Gulf Coast kid who embodied that Gulf Coast lifestyle and that’s what we’re doing. And I see him as sort of our patron saint of the festival.”

Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band recently conducted a brief tour to pay tribute to Buffett and to explore its future without its longtime bandleader. One of the striking things about those shows was the sense of community: Fans weren’t there just for the music or for the nostalgia, they were there for the shared communal experience. Brennan said he hopes to see the same kind of vibe at Son of a Sailor Fest. And life in Mobile offers a conspicuous precedent, he said.

RELATED: Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band sets sail in search of its future: ‘We found it in the songs’

“It’s kind of like Mardi Gras,” he said. “Everybody makes Mardi Gras. It’s not just the floats going by, it’s the people around you on barricades. And that’s what a Coral Reefer show’s like. And that’s what Son of a Sailor Fest is, and what last year was. You make the festival. The costumes, the camaraderie, it’s like a big family union for a lot of these fans. And even if you’re not a fan, who doesn’t love throwing on a costume and jumping in the street? You have permission.”

To that point, there may be some synergy in play on the day of the parade and fest. South Alabama Comic Con will be going on at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, so there could be a lot of costumed visitors from, shall we say, other worlds roaming downtown.

“There is something so perfectly serendipitous about this,” said Brennan. “I mean, let’s be real. It’s like, it’s two different types of cosplay. You know, it’s adults that like to dress up like pirates and parrots and cheeseburgers and whatever. And, you know, other adults that like to dress up like Sailor Moon or ‘Dragonball Z.’

“There is an intersection and the potential … imagine if there was like a Gundam in the second line,” he said. “Even though that in no way relates to parrothead imagery, it’s just magic. It’s just creating magic and there would just be something so fun about that.”

Brennan said that the section of Dauphin Street between Cathedral Square and the SouthSounds stage will be blocked off. Organizers’ hope is that patrons will enjoy a street festival vibe, patronizing local restaurants as well as the food trucks that will be on hand.

Perhaps in the future, Son of a Sailor Fest will grow to become an annual, ticketed event, a magnet for fans of Buffett’s legacy. VIP patrons will get a taste of that this year: A VIP welcome reception held in The Admiral Hotel – where Buffett played some of his earliest gigs in the Admiral’s Corner bar – will feature a Q&A with Milton Brown and John Edd Thompson, who were involved in Buffett’s earliest studio recordings.

For now it’s about enjoying the moment. A moment that, as Brennan puts it, should be “a little bit of Mardi Gras, a little bit of beach, a little bit of escapism, and a whole lot of joy for life.”

Festival FAQs can be found at https://www.sos-fest.com/about . Among the guidelines: Beach chairs, bag chairs, small personal coolers, “leashed and well-behaved pets” are welcome, while large coolers, beach umbrellas and unleashed pets are not. Updates can be found on social media channels including the event’s Facebook page .
