What Makes a Camper Trailer Ultra Lightweight?

Travel trailers are less expensive than RVing. If you have a truck or SUV, then it is easier to tow a camper trailer.

Although we’re focusing on the most lightweight units, there are still designs and features you must be aware of.

The only problem you could encounter is owning a model that does not have your necessities or won’t allow you to make adjustments.

What Should Know About the Weight

While large units weighing more than 3000-pounds tend to be bigger, they are also more likely to slow you down.

Back when I first had my RV trip, my vehicle took the tool. Now that I have a crossover vehicle, I discovered that it is best paired with a travel trailer that weighs 2,000 pounds or less.

It is easy to check the actual weight, but you must be aware that it is the unloaded or dry weight. When you add things and accessories, you can go beyond 2,000 pounds.

Typically, you’ll need to bring propane, groceries, water, air conditioner, generator, sleeping mats, and the like. Simply put, the gross weight depends on your needs.

Most of the time, a brand specifies how much added weight you can safely tow.

How Does the Floorplan Affect Weight?

The key formula is = Floorplan and Layout > Size

The floorplan could either make your trailer heavier or lighter. Hence, a well-designed floorplan is necessary.

For example, some travelers like to include household amenities such as loaded kitchens, dining area, storage, and bathrooms.

There are even models that allow users to pull out a section of the wall to create larger spaces.

Although there’s limited space, you can plan how to install a stove or an off-the-ground sleeping area.

If you have an excellent floorplan, you can even include solar panels, roof vents, WiFi booster, and an outside grill.

This is the very reason why I prefer ultra lightweight models because they keep a low profile outdoors.

With a good floorplan and manageable weight, it is easier to set up the trailer at campsites, especially as small camping grounds. At times, it’s even more convenient to set up a trailer than a tent.

This mobility gives you the freedom to pack your gears fast and then move to another location.

Convenient Towing

Although camper trailers are created to be spacious, they should be towable. It’s preferable to use a minivan or SUV for trailers weighing 2000 pounds or less.

Construction

The materials and construction add up to the unloaded weight.Even if a trailer is lightweight, it must have solid, sturdy walls.

This enables the trailer to keep intact during long hours of travel and unexpected weather change. In addition, rigid and tough walls should be capable of providing insulation from noise or cold.

Economical Features

There goes the saying that less is more. Larger trailers tend to use fuel fast, which leads to bigger operational costs. Meanwhile, small units will save you both on fuel and maintenance costs.

Compared to RVs, travel trailers are approximately 2 to 3 MPG better in terms of fuel economy.

Keep in mind that towing a loaded camping trailer diminishes the fuel efficiency of a towing vehicle by a couple of miles per gallon.

Therefore, owning a lightweight trailer means your towing vehicle won’t need 8 to 10 MPG when towing.Furthermore, a lightweight trailer means less space for an AC unit to heat or cool.

Taking Care of a Travel Trailer to Sustain Lightweight Operation

Maintaining a trailer depends on your usage. If you are a frequent traveler, do some maintenance works after each trip or at least once a month.

Here are some ways to keep your unit in good condition:

Check batteries before each trip.

Wash the trailer after each trip.

Open the vents after washing.

Drain the black and gray water waste (which comes from the sink and shower).

Drain the freshwater tank at least once a month.

Always check the tire conditions.

Buy a generator and battery charger in case of emergencies.

Install six-gallon water tanks for backup.

Keep your stuff organized.

If there are some mechanisms or parts you are unsure of, it’s better to let a professional fix it.

Make Camping Fun and Comfortable!

From solo travelers to couples and families—there’s an available ultra lightweight travel trailer! The efficiency and mobility are great investments for every wanderlust out there.

All of the lightweight trailers in this article are affordable and easier to drive and maneuver. Likewise, they require little setup time and have a better fuel economy.

The ultimate decision depends on your requirements and preferences. Yet, I can assure you that any of the models we’ve introduced would suit your needs.

Top Reasons To Invest In A Lightweight Travel Trailer

As we mentioned, small travel trailers are a good investment if you have an SUV or crossover that can’t handle a larger rig. Here are some of the other perks that they offer:

  • Lower cost –As a rule, smaller trailers will cost less up front than bigger RVs, keeping more money in your pocket for the adventures that await.
  • Better fuel economy –The savings don’t end there. Less weight means better gas mileage, so you’ll continue to spend less money even as you hit the road.
  • Less stress on the vehicle –Even if you do have a giant pickup truck with a great tow package, a lighter travel trailer will put less strain on the engine and the vehicle as a whole.
  • Eco-friendly –The less fuel you burn, the more environmentally sound your camping trips will be.

Best Ultra Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 2000 Pounds: Product Review Guide

We were gratified to learn that Jayco has an entry in the ultralight travel trailer race–and even more pleased to find that it just about beats out the competition. If you enjoy boondocking (that is, camping without access to an outside power source), then this could be the unit for you.

The sleeping area offers a full-sized bed with overhead storage. There’s a microwave and fridge in the rear outdoor kitchen area, along with a generously-sized sink. You can opt to purchase an additional grill if you need more cooking space. The Hummingbird 10RK even has a television–a rare commodity in campers this size.

2000 scamp travel trailer

Like most of the travel trailers listed here, the 10RK sleeps just two people. If you’re in the market for a micro camper, however, you’re not likely to miss the extra bedroom space. The construction is durable, and the large tires keep the unit stable during transit. Best of all, this is an attractive model that’s sure to garner compliments from any fellow campers you happen to meet on the road.

Manufacturers Website

With impressive amenities, a relatively large living area, and a sturdy build, the Rockwood Geo Pro represents one of the best bargains on the market.

Measuring just over 11 feet in length, the unit is easy to tow, even if this is your first time hauling a travel trailer. It also weighs in at just 1252 pounds, meaning that it can be safely towed behind most SUVs and crossovers.

2000 scamp travel trailer

The interior consists of a full-sized bed with overhead storage, an entertainment center, and a kitchen area with sink, refrigerator, and microwave. Because the unit lacks a toilet, there’s no black water tank, but a gray water tank offers a 6 gallon capacity for any sink runoff. The freshwater tank, meanwhile, offers a generous 20-gallon limit.

A Wi-Fi range extender comes standard with any Rockwood Geo Pro model, making it easier to stay connected. If you so choose, you can also customize the camper with air conditioning, a bike rack, or a lift kit.

If you’ve ever seen a Scamp travel trailer before, you probably remember it. These distinctive white and red campers feature a square design with vaguely rounded edges–and interiors so cozy, they invite you to stay in bed and admire the outdoors through the window.

The versatile interior features a sofa that converts to a pair of bunk beds, along with a rear dining table that can be transformed into a double bed. A sink and double-burner gas stove make up the kitchen area. There’s also a closet that can pull double duty as a pantry.

2000 scamp travel trailer

If you go for the Deluxe option (the specs of which we’ve included below), you’ll get fiberglass cabinets, wood panel doors, and hardwood accents. The colors are warm and inviting, with plenty of blues and reds to balance out the browns. The Scamp is a visually arresting and well-built unit that’s sure to bring years of enjoyment to any couple or small family .

This unit boasts a great deal of storage space for such a lightweight camper, as well as an innovative interior design. If you’ve been an avowed tent camper up until now, the Falcon FL-14 might just make a believer out of you.

The dinette converts easily into a bed large enough for two, and the kitchen area includes a sink, two-burner range, overhead cabinets, and two separate pantries. There’s even a skylight overhead to open up the space. This unit has a wet bath with shower, but no separate black water tank. The freshwater tank holds an impressive 18 gallons, though, which is enough to allow two people to bathe as long as they’re quick about it.

2000 scamp travel trailer

While the Falcon FL-14 has plenty going for it even without the decorative touches, we’re huge fans of the skylight and the blue LED accent lighting. This is a model for campers who want to bring a little flair into the great outdoors with them.

The interior of this teardrop-shaped model is as low-key as they come, but the aerodynamic nature of the camper makes up for any shortcomings in the style department. It also hooks up easily, making it a great choice for novices.

Amenities consist of a kitchen area with sink and two-burner range, a bathroom with cassette toilet and shower, and a dinette that converts into a bed large enough to sleep two people. If the space feels too cramped, the floor can be dropped to boost the interior height by a few inches. Because of the high-quality construction, the Aliner Ascape is equal to even the most rugged excursions.

Note that there’s no black water tank included in the setup, so this unit isn’t the best fit for extended boondocking. The fresh water tank holds just 11 gallons, which is enough for cooking and washing up, but not ideal for showering.

For those who thought the Timberleaf Teardrop Classic was cute but just a trifle too large, here comes the Pika to answer your prayers. This unit is 36 percent smaller than the Classic model, making it a cinch to tow–and a blast to live in, however temporarily.

The Pika takes its name from a rabbit-like animal native to the Rocky Mountains. Like its namesake, this trailer is built for adventure, with a low profile that allows it to handle rocky and rugged terrain with ease.

The bed measures slightly smaller than the one found in the Classic, but it’s still large enough to sleep two. We’re big fans of the double side doors, which allow each camper to get in and out without disturbing the other. Another plus is the skylight, a feature that distinguishes the majority of Timberleaf’s offerings. Dual USB ports and LED lighting are also featured. The galley area includes a refrigerator and plenty of storage, but no sink, burner range, or microwave.

Campers who are in the market for a small yet functional travel trailer should enjoy the queen-sized bed that comes standard with the 2017 PaloMini 132FD. Though the unit measures just 16 feet long, it offers the amenities that you would expect from a a larger model.

Located to the rear of the camper, the sleeping area sits adjacent to a wardrobe that can be used instead as a pantry for kitchen supplies, depending on your needs. The kitchen also offers a sink, refrigerator, and two-burner range. A cozy dinette can be converted to a bed that sleeps an additional two people. With no bathroom facilities included, the 19-gallon freshwater tank can go a long way.

2000 scamp travel trailer

While most of the units listed here are better suited to couples , the PaloMini is an excellent option for families of three to four people. It comes in just under our 2,000 pound limit, but can still be towed comfortably behind most medium- to heavy-duty pickup trucks.

Because it makes the most out of a tiny footprint, the Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro is a strong contender for the top spot on our list. Measuring just over 11 feet in length with a dry weight of 1,164 pounds, it’s a micro camper with style and class to spare.

Enter through one of two side doors and make yourself comfortable on the full-sized bed, which takes up the bulk of the interior. An entertainment center and two separate overhead storage areas add comfort and convenience to the space.

2000 scamp travel trailer

Outside, the galley area features a microwave, refrigerator, sink, and additional storage. Counter space is minimal, but it’s enough for a single person to get the chopping and mixing chores out of the way. Since this rig is so simple to maneuver, you won’t have to waste precious time searching for a campsite. We would highly recommend the E-Pro to couples who enjoy camping but are ready to stop sleeping on the ground.

In Conclusion

Now you know–travel trailers don’t have to weigh a literal ton. There are many lightweight options to choose from, some more well-appointed than others.

As we indicated, our favorite trailer on this list is the Jayco Hummingbird 10RK, with the Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro coming in at a close second. Which one you choose depends upon whether it’s luxury that you seek, or a few basic kitchen facilities and a dry place to rest your head at night.

Good luck, and happy camping!

What Does a Scamp Trailer Cost? (Used and New Price List)

  • July 20, 2021 /
  • By James V. /

The cost is in the details . Base price is just that, a starting point. Unfortunately, the price only goes in one direction after that-- up. Your costs for any RV will depend on all the added features you want inside. The Scamp RV company is not going to be any different in this regard.

What does a Scamp trailer cost? One prospective buyer reported that the 2021 16’ trailer would cost roughly $19,000. That is just with the standard options package. You have to email Scamp directly in order to get a current price list.

To learn more about the cost of Scamp trailers, just continue to read our article. It has the information you want to know about. Keep in mind that prices may be inflated at this time, and the bubble may burst shortly after you purchase your Scamp trailer

How Much is a 13ft Scamp Trailer?

How-Much-is-a-13ft-Scamp-Trailer

If you just want the basic package, then you are looking at paying roughly $15,000 for a nice 13-foot trailer. This is the base price for the standard model, and if you want a bathroom included, you will be paying a little more.

The cost of the trailers with features not included in the base package will range between $18,000 and $22,000. The difference in prices is not only due to the many extra features included, but that Scamp builds their trailers according to their customers.

Each trailer is custom-built, and you will pay for that special attention to your trailer. These prices are subject to change as Scamp does not publicly release its price lists. You have to contact them at 1-800-346-4962 or emailing them at [email protected] to get their current price list.

Just so you know, the difference in cost between a new 2020 model and a new 2021 trailer is about $600, with the latter being the higher of the two prices. If you are going used, the cost of a 13-foot trailer will be up to the individual owner, and some owners are taking advantage of the current world situation to make their money back on their investment.

How Much Does a 19-foot Scamp Trailer Cost?

How-Much-Does-a-19-foot-Scamp-Trailer-Cost

The starting price runs around $20,000 just for the standard basic package. There are few features with this package, and you can pay up to $30,000 with added features. Your actual cost new will depend on Scamp’s asking price for the different features you want to have inside.

Also, you need to be aware that the 19-foot Scamp option is a 5th wheel trailer and not a regular bumper tow one. This design provides you with a lot more interior space than the 13 and 16-foot models.

That extra space is a nice selling point when you need room when you are on vacation. The good thing about buying a 19-footer is that all design layouts include a toilet. If you think that is not a good item to highlight, keep in mind that many Scamp trailer designs do not include a toilet.

2 of the 5 standard 16-foot layouts are missing this important feature, and 1 of the 4 deluxe designs is missing it as well. To discuss the different price options, you can visit their loan factory direct dealer in Backus, Minnesota.

You will get all the up-to-date pricing you want by talking to the people at this dealership or by using the contact information already provided above.

Scamp Fifth Wheel Prices

Scamp-Fifth-Wheel-Prices

The 5th wheel prices will be the same as the 19-foot prices. That is the design that the trailer comes in, and there is no upgrade to the price for that design. This design is on both the standard and deluxe models.

It may be a good reason to upgrade and pay the extra money as the 19-foot 5th wheel model provides a lot more space than the 13 or 16-foot models. The reason we say that is that Scamp measures its length from the end of the tongue to the bumper. You may not get 13 or 16 feet of space inside those smaller trailers.

At least with the 5th wheel, you get some space over the hitch you can use, which allows for greater living space inside. Even if it is the 5th wheel, the trailer will not weigh you down and cost you a lot of money in fuel to tow.

These trailers may only weigh just under 3,000 pounds with all the features added. That is not bad when you want to save on your fuel costs. Going used may be the best way to save on the purchase price as they run around $8,000 more or less.

New Scamp Trailer Price List

New-Scamp-Trailer-Price-List

This is something you have to get through Scamp itself. As we stated earlier, they do not publicly post their price lists, and since this is the middle of 2021, any current prices will not be the same for next year.

This time last year, the company was taking orders for 2021 and not building for any 2020 deliveries. It can be concluded the situation is the same for this year since so many people put their orders in last year for this year’s models.

We have posted their contact information and dealership location earlier, and that is the best source to go to. That way you know exactly how much you will pay. We say that every owner is different, and their costs will depend on how many features they add to the basic package.

There is a wide range of features and options you can add on, and Scamp has individual prices for each one. People are posting different price lists that they receive from Scamp, but so far, none have been for 2022. The price lists they post are outdated.

One example is that the price between the 2020 and the 2021 models for the same trailer size is $600. That was for the basic standard package. it is hard to say how much the price increased for next year’s models.

Scamp Trailer Prices Used

We are going to provide you with a little comparison chart of different prices for used trailers . There is n particular order, and there is no guarantee the prices will remain at the reported levels. This chart is just to give you an idea of what you can expect to pay:

The other thing you have to be aware of is that different used trailer dealers will price their Scamp trailers differently. If you find one that is in good shape and listed well below the above prices, then take it. It looks to be a better deal.

Individual owners will set their prices according to their sentiment, their own personal cost, use, and so on. Expect a very wide range in prices when you look at classified ads, etc.

Who knows, the used trailer market may collapse once everything returns to normal. You may get an even better deal when it does.

2023 Standard Options

The following list is taken directly from the Scamp website to let you know what you can expect to find in a standard package for a 19-foot 5th wheel trailer. Notice this is not for next year’s models but for the models the year after that.

  • 2 Burner Propane Stove
  • Prep For A/C
  • Kitchen Sink
  • Cabinet Over Sink
  • Spare Tire & Cover
  • Mounted Rear Jacks
  • Outside Step
  • Electric Brakes
  • 2” Receiver
  • Dual Propane Tanks
  • LED Exterior Lights
  • 45 Amp Power Converter
  • Outside GFI Outlet
  • Grey Water Tank
  • 12 Volt Water Pump
  • Propane Water Heater
  • 3.7 cu. ft. Refrigerator
  • 24 Series Battery Pack
  • Screen Door
  • Rear Overhead Cabinets
  • Battery Disconnect Switch
  • Silverware Drawer

We checked the 13 and 16-foot web pages, and they are listing the 2023 features as well. Call Scamp and see what kind of waiting list you will be put on if you want to order a new trailer. It may be wiser to buy used instead of having to wait.

Some Final Words

In looking at the Scamp trailers, these little RVs seem perfect for those who do not have children. They are great for when you are young and getting ready to start a family.

Plus, they are excellent for when you are retired and your children are grown. Their small size and lightweight make them easy to tow and maneuver as well.
