The Best Virginia Wineries to Visit

With over 300 wineries and a reputation for high-quality production, Virginia has become one of the most unexpected and exciting wine-producing states in the country. With a varied terrain, a wide range of terroirs, and a grape growing and winemaking culture as passionate as any, Virginia has raised itself to the upper echelons of American wine. From familiar varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, to less widely known ones like Viognier, Norton, and beyond, Virginia, as the state's tourism tagline goes, isn't just for lovers; it's for wine lovers, too. These 10, listed alphabetically, are a great representation of what makes Virginia wine so exciting. — Richard Nalley

Ankida Ridge Vineyards

Not to say that this mountaintop winery in Amherst is remote, but they advise you to print driving directions since your GPS may fade out. And the fact that it is only open for tastings from noon to 5 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for most of the year (it's only open on weekends in February and March), may prove to be another discouragement. But those who persevere in getting to the top of the 1,800-foot promontory will be greeted with not only gorgeous views but also the Vrooman family's paradigm-altering wines. In a state whose vineyards are Bordeaux-leaning, the Vroomans have planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in an area they call "little Burgundy." Given the recognition both are getting from competitions and wine lovers, your trip will likely be rewarded. ankidaridge.com

Barboursville

Arguably Virginia's most famous winery, Barboursville was founded outside Charlottesville back in 1976, though the estate dates to the 18th century. Barboursville is owned by the Zonin family, from Italy's Veneto, which brought Old World know-how, stubbornness, and talented winemaker Luca Paschina to the project. The result is a path-breaking winery that has received high recognition for numerous wines, starting with the flagship Octagon red Bordeaux blend, but extending into whites as well, including Viognier and Chardonnay. The winery is also a well-established attraction for wine tourists, who can stroll the extensive grounds, including the ruins of the mansion Thomas Jefferson built for the original owner. The tasting room is open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sundays starting at 11 a.m., and there are cottages, an inn, and dining all on-site. bbvwine.com

Blenheim Vineyards

The touch of star power now gracing the Virginia wine industry includes Blenheim Vineyards, owned by musician Dave Matthews. Though the main winery building and upstairs tasting room (designed by Matthews himself) is new, Blenheim's property is dotted with historic structures, including the 1730 "Claim House" that the original owner built to secure his land grant. Seated tastings indoors are by reservation only Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and last an hour, though outside accommodations are available for walk-ins. The flagship bottlings here are the Painted Red Bordeaux-style blend and the Painted White Chardonnay/Viognier/Sauvignon Blanc blend, both with poster-worthy retro labels. blenheimvineyards.com

Boxwood Estate

Founder John Kent Cooke (son of the onetime owner of Washington's football team) recruited famed Bordeaux consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt to help make the wines at his ambitious Virginia estate, in Middleburg's horse country. (The 18th-century property once belonged to aviation pioneer Billy Mitchell.) The property produces delicious wines from its 28-acre vineyard, particularly Bordeaux-style red blends like Topiary and their highly regarded Sauvignon Blanc. boxwoodwinery.com

Early Mountain Winery

Here's something you rarely find in wine country: a tasting room that pours not only its own wines, but also those of many of its top competitors (a little Barboursville, a little Linden). This elegant winery on the Monticello Wine Trail in Madison aims to be both a standout on its own and to boost the "Best of Virginia." That extends to food as well: The Marketplace serves locavore meals and snacks. It's worth checking the website for the active calendar of events, including concerts. Reservations are encouraged for tastings, available Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. earlymountain.com

King Family Vineyards

The first priority for founder David King was a massive, flat field for the polo matches that are now played here every Sunday from Memorial Day through mid-October. Polo lessons are available, too. He approached the winery, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Crozet, with the same determination. This included bringing in French winemaker Matthieu Finot, who has had particular success with Bordeaux-style reds, including the vineyard's flagship Meritage, but he produces a range of wines, including the intriguing, experimental Small Batch Series, bubbly, and more. Reservations are required for the daily tastings (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which start at $12 for the Classic Tasting, and go up from there. kingfamilyvineyards.com

Linden Vineyards

Owner Jim Law is not only one of the state's acknowledged Chardonnay masters, but he makes very fine Bordeaux-style reds at his Linden winery as well. He planted his Hardscrabble Vineyard high in the Blue Ridge Mountains back in 1985, and today his 4,000-case production consists of wines that have won over professionals and consumers alike. Law's sought-after Chardonnays are often held back well beyond other wineries' release dates for added maturation. He is determined to maintain the peace and quiet of the property, so visitors are advised to read up on the various restrictions (and seasonal hours) before arriving. Tastings are by reservation only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. lindenvineyards.com

Potomac Point Winery

This substantial, well-funded winery 45 minutes south of Washington D.C., in Stafford, offers a range of attractions, including the spacious tasting room and live music in the bistro on Friday evenings. The ambitious Le Grand Cru Bistro is a local destination, ample picnic space is available, and tastings are by reservation on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. potomacpointwinery.com

Rappahannock Cellars

John and Marialisa Delmare and their 12 children relocated from Saratoga Vineyards in California's Santa Cruz Mountains to a panoramic spot in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in Huntly back in 1998. Along the way, they've evolved a business model that makes sales to their wine club a major factor — among other things, wine club members have access to club-only bottlings. They encourage non-club members to drop in as well for daily tastings from noon to 6 p.m. rappahannockcellars.com

RdV Vineyards

In a state marked by ambitious, well-heeled winery owners, Linden alumnus Rutger de Vink stands out, not least because he has brought in a dream team of consultants from Bordeaux, headed by enologist Eric Boissenot. His lovely contemporary winery in Delaplane turns out excellent wines, and the property provides one of the most elaborate tasting experiences in the state. Visits to this luxury hillside operation are by appointment only, Friday through Sunday. The RdV Experience, which includes a vineyard tour, Champagne, and comparative wine tasting, as well as cheese and charcuterie, is $120 per person. rdvvineyards.com

13 Amazing Wineries in Virginia {Cozy Tasting Rooms + Gorgeous Mountain Views}

By: Author Katie

Posted on February 28, 2022

Although not as famous as some states for vineyards, Virginia is for wine lovers. Here are the best Virginia wineries to visit, whether you’re looking for an elegant pinot noir in a tasting room or a beautiful place to enjoy sparkling wine at a picnic table.

A guide to navigating Virginia wine country + tips for your visit

Virginia wine country is a rapidly growing tourist destination. The area is home to more than 300 wineries and hosted more than 2.3 million wine tourists in 2018. If you’re looking to explore Virginia’s wine country, this guide will help you navigate the best wineries, vineyards, and wine tours in the area.

Indeed, Virginia wine country is a must-visit for any wine lover. The area has a temperate climate, making it ideal for growing various grapes that result in delicious wines. Virginia wine country experiences two main seasons: the autumnal harvest in early October and the spring harvest in late May or early June. During these times, vineyards and wineries open their doors to the public for tastings and tours.

Visitors to Virginia wine country can enjoy touring the wineries and trying out their wines. Most wineries offer tastings and food options, such as cheese plates and charcuterie boards, that pair well with their wines.

These vineyards run up and down the western portion of the state, a region full of gorgeous mountain towns and an excellent area for a Virginia weekend getaway.

To make the most of your visit:

  • Some of these vineyards charge a tasting fee, and some don’t. Most are in the ten-dollar range, so not a huge deal either way.
  • Don’t expect to eat a full meal. Most Virginia wineries offer light snacks.
  • When in doubt, try the cabernet franc or cabernet sauvignon. According to the tours we have been on, this grape grows very well in the Virginia climate and produces some of the region’s best wine.
  • The pandemic has caused many of these vineyards to require reservations. Call before you arrive!
  • Some of these are pet friendly, some are not. Check before bringing your furry friend.

After you’ve finished your wine tasting, be sure to go on a tour of the vineyard. You’ll get to see where the grapes are grown and learn about the winemaking process. And if you’re hungry, the Chateau Morrisette Winery also has a great patio where you can eat lunch overlooking the mountains.

At Chateau Morrisette Winery, dog lovers have a place to enjoy wine and each other’s company. Dogs are welcome at the winery, so long as they are on a leash. This means that you can bring your furry friend along on your wine tour and enjoy some of Virginia’s best wines together.

8. Rappahannock Cellars

large wooden wine barrels in cellar

This vineyard is a family-owned boutique winery that started in California then moved to Virginia.

It’s located in Rappahannock County, west of the Northern Virginia suburbs and just a few minutes from Shenandoah National Park.

They offer a wine club that ships a few bottles of wine to your home per month. It also allows you to enjoy private rooms and events, and wine tastings without the tasting fee. If you’re local, it’s fun and well worth it.

They have a small restaurant, a few tasting rooms, and an outdoor patio where you can enjoy a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

9. Keswick Vineyards

Keswick Vineyards is an estate located in Keswick, Virginia, with a history dating back to the Civil War era. The vineyard was first planted in 1864 and is still operational today. It offers wine tastings, tours, and events.

10. Early Mountain Vineyards

Early Mountain Vineyards is a winery located in Madison, Virginia. The vineyard offers wine tastings, tours, and events.

Early Mountain Vineyards is a winery located in Madison, Virginia. They are known for their award-winning wines and are the first estate winery in Nelson County. In addition to wine tastings, they offer tours of the vineyard and production facilities. They also partner with other Virginia wineries and serve tasting flights with wines from all over the state.

11. Potomac Point Winery

Potomac Point Winery is a winery located in Stafford, Virginia. It offers wine tastings, tours, and events.

An easy drive from Northern Virginia and DC, this winery is not in the mountains and is an excellent choice if you’re looking for something outside the Shenandoah Valley. They offer wine tastings and tours and have a small gift shop on site. They also partner with other wineries to offer tasting flights with wines from all over the state.

12. Stone Tower Winery

In Leesburg, Virginia, this winery is elegant… and expensive. Tours start in the $100 range if you want to see the real estate and enjoy a tasting.

We haven’t taken the tour, but everything here is beautifully done, from the labels to their wine club to their tasting room, complete with a fireplace. If you’re an exacting person, you’ll probably enjoy this Northern Virginia winery.

13. Barboursville Vineyards

Well known for their cabernet franc, this large and beautiful vineyard is near Charlottesville and part of the Monticello wine trail.

Barboursville Vineyards has a full restaurant and inn and feels more like a resort than a vineyard. Another elegant choice for wine lovers with high expectations.

Enjoy your trip

If you’re looking for a fun day trip or want to enjoy Virginia wines without having to drive too far, these are some great wineries to check out. They offer wine tastings, tours, and events so you can enjoy everything the vineyards have to offer.

10 Best Virginia Wineries Within a Day Trip from Washington D.C.

Learn About Visiting Some of the Top Virginia Wineries Located Near Washington DC | Winetraveler.com

10 Top Virginia Wineries that are a Day Trip from Washington, D.C.

Virginia is not only the birthplace of American wine, but it is also one of the most beautiful states to take a road trip through on a nice day. From the seaside to the mountains, it seems like Virginia truly has it all. Luckily for those living the city life in Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas, the option exists for you to do just that and take a short drive away from the metropolitan stress to relax and experience some of the country’s most historical wine country.

Like other regions, Virginia has several viticultural areas around the state, but the wineries in Northern Virginia offer the quickest option for tasting if you are based out of the DC area. Unlike some regions out west, Virginia wineries usually offer very modest tasting fees and a friendly, accessible atmosphere year-round. Whether you live there or are just visiting, these wineries near Washington DC make for the perfect day trip.

We also highly recommend taking a completely customizable, privately guided day trip to Virginia’s wine country with Black Hawk Sedans, where you’ll be picked up and returned to your hotel the DC area.

Clifton Virginia Wineries

Paradise springs winery.

13219 Yates Ford Rd, Clifton, VA 20124

About 45 minutes from the National Mall.

Top Wineries in Virginia a Short Drive From Washington DC | Winetraveler.com

If there’s light traffic, you can make it to the Paradise Springs tasting bar from DC in less than an hour. This is an extremely high-quality winery offering some of the most classic expressions of Virginia wine in a rustic-chic tasting barn. Paradise Springs has grown up significantly since it opened its doors less than 10 years ago. Now, the first bi-coastal winery in the U.S. with a tasting room and operations in Santa Barbara, CA, Paradise Springs is a bit of a Virginia legend of a winery.

From live music to lots of fun community events happening on the property, check the Paradise Springs website and social media to find out what activities are on the calendar for your visit. Don’t forget to taste through some of the best examples of Virginia’s Norton grape, Chenin Blanc, Sommet Blanc, Tannat, and the dark PVT label. Also, ask about how you can get your hands on some “Swagger” Port-style wine. If you’re a college sports fan, you’ll appreciate the story behind the name.

Hume Virginia Wineries

Desert rose ranch & winery.

13726 Hume Rd, Hume, VA 22639

Travel Time from DC: About 1 hour and 15 minutes from the National Mall.

Best Wineries Near DC | Desert Rose Ranch & Winery | Winetraveler.com

Desert Rose Ranch and Winery is a pleasant little western-themed outpost farther out in Hume, Virginia. A quaint tasting room is decorated with foreign currency and tokens from the owner’s many travels abroad. Does anything feel clandestine to you? If it does, you may be onto something. While visiting and tasting some of the award-winning wine, ask for the story about how the foreign coins ended up under your tasting glass. You may be shocked and impressed to hear what career winemaker and owner, Bob Claymier, had prior to becoming one of Virginia’s award-wining winemakers at Desert Rose.

Philip Carter Winery

4366 Stillhouse Rd, Hume, VA 22639

Travel Time from DC: About 1 hour 15 minutes from the National Mall.

Philip Carter’s history of winemaking dates all the way back to the beginning of international recognition of winemaking in Virginia in the late 18th century. In 1762, Charles Carter of the Carter family, which was a key family in setting up trade and commerce in the colonies, sent several bottles of his wine made in Virginia to the agriculture committee for the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacture, and Commerce in London. The society was very impressed with the product and gave Carter a gold medal as the first person to make a “spirited attempt towards the accomplishment of their views, respecting wine in America.” The following year, the Carter family was awarded recognition by the Governor of the Colony of Virginia for being the first family to successfully grow European vines in Virginia.

Fast forward to the early 2000s, and Philip Carter Strother, who is a direct descendant of the colonial Carter family, worked hard to protect the Virginia wine industry through the passage of the Virginia Farm Winery Zoning Act before establishing his own winery in 2008.

It’s safe to say that by tasting at Philip Carter, you are truly tasting a piece of American winemaking history! Thanks to this family, American winemaking made its appearance on an International scale over 250 years ago.

Rappahannock Cellars

14437 Co Rd 635, Huntly, VA 22640

Travel Time from DC: About 1 hour 30 minutes from the National Mall

Rappahannock Cellars is another friendly, family-owned winery in the beautiful Virginia foothills. The Delmare family began their winemaking venture in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, but soon decided that Virginia Wine Country would be their home.

Rappahannock practices many sustainable techniques in their vineyard located in the historic Glenway Farm (circa 1804). The family has worked hard to find the grapes that grow the best in their piece of Virginia terroir, and feature single varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Seyval Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier, as well as blends of these grapes. For only $10, you can do a premium tasting at Rappahannock Cellars and learn about Virginia wine from the experienced tasting room staff.

Purcellville Virginia Wineries

Breaux vineyards.

36888 Breaux Vineyards Ln, Purcellville, VA 20132

Travel Time from DC: About 1 hour 30 minutes from the National Mall.

Breaux Vineyards is definitely an experience to be had in Virginia Wine Country! The views are incredible, and Breaux offers visitors the choice to taste inside its beautiful tasting room or sit outside and truly admire the stunning landscape. The Breaux estate sits on 400+ acres and is home to many wine-related events and tastings. Come for a taste at the Cajun-themed winery and stay for the fun. Between weddings, live music, and festive wine events, there’s always something going on at Breaux, which makes it an exciting place to fall in love with Virginia wine.

Delaplane Virginia Wineries

Rdv vineyards.

2550 Delaplane Grade Rd, Delaplane, VA 20144

RdV Vineyards has really made a name for itself as a top producer of Virginia wine. In fact, wine critics, Robert Parker, Jr., James Suckling, and Jancis Robinson have all spoken very highly of wines made by winemaker, Rutger de Vink. The mission at RdV is to make great American wine, and that is just what they are doing on a hilltop in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Under the direction of Estate Director, Jared Slipp, who is one of the world’s few Master Sommeliers, the RdV team has crafted some of the finest wine coming out of Virginia today. An in-depth tour and tasting, including a locally sourced cheese and charcuterie board, will run $65 per person, but is worth it for the up-close look at the talent that goes into creating some of the internationally recognized top wines produced in Virginia.

Barrel Oak Winery

3623 Grove Ln, Delaplane, VA 20144

Travel Time from DC: About 1 hour from the National Mall.

Perhaps some of the friendliest wine-loving locals can be found at Barrel Oak Winery on the weekends. Indoor and outdoor seating and a dog-friendly environment mean that Barrel Oak can be a fun and easy-going winery to visit. One look at Barrel Oak’s website, and you know you’re in for an animal-lover’s treat.

Stop by to taste the wines, bring a picnic, and enjoy the positive vibes! Look for fun events happening on-site almost every weekend.

Broad Run Virginia Wineries

Pearmund cellars.

6190 Georgetown Road, Broad Run, VA 20137

No Northern Virginia winery list would be complete without mentioning Pearmund Cellars, a family-owned winery that has been voted as the People’s Choice “Virginia’s Favorite Winery” for four years in Virginia Wine Lovers Magazine . Pearmund has won many awards for its wines in both east and west coast competitions, making it a very popular Virginia Wine Country destination.

For only $10, you can do a basic tasting at the indoor tasting bar, which is part of the best tasting room as voted by Virginia Wine Lovers . While visiting, you can also choose to do a full experience, which includes a food & wine tasting in the winery’s barrel room for only $50 per person, or there are several tour options in between. Stop by to taste an award-winning Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, or one of the other Pearmund wines. You won’t find any live music here, so sit back, relax, and simply enjoy the wine.

Markham Virginia Wineries

Best Wineries Near DC - Naked Mountain Winery | Winetraveler.com

Naked Mountain Winery & Vineyards

2747 Leeds Manor Rd, Markham, VA 22643

A beautiful setting awaits at Naked Mountain Winery, though despite the name, clothing is not optional. Bob and Phoebe Harper planted the first vines on the property in 1976 and named the winery after the mountain where it’s located, Naked Mountain. After pioneering the modern-day Virginia wine industry, Bob & Phoebe sold the winery to Randy and Meagan Morgan in 2010, and the couple still owns the winery where Randy is the Chief winemaker today.

Wines here have gained prominence in the White House as Naked Mountain’s Chardonnay has been served to two sitting Presidents. You’ll really enjoy the welcoming ambiance in the tasting room as well as on the deck outside, where you can bring your well-trained dog and occasionally enjoy some live music.

Bluemont Virginia Wineries

Bluemont vineyard.

18755 Foggy Bottom Rd, Bluemont, VA 20135

If you’re into wine tasting for the mountain views, then Bluemont is a must-see. Situated on the first ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Bluemont Vineyard has some of the best views in Northern Virginia Wine Country. Once you are there, the winery offers a guided tasting for visitors, as well as a full menu of farm-to-table cuisine on site.

Good choices-we’ve visited quite a few on our trips through VA, though some feel a bit big, busy and impersonal.Right around the corner from Desert Rose(a fine addition to this list) is our personal favorite-Chester Gap Cellars. The vine list is superb and just right for a tasting, plus a glass on the deck overlooking their beautiful vineyard. We make it a point to stop on our trips from PA to Richmond.

Thank you for your comment! I’m so glad to hear that you love VA wine! We’ll have to explore Chester Gap Cellars sometime. 🙂 Cheers!

Virginia Vacation Guide

The Best Virginia Wine Bus Tours

Virginia is home to over 300 wineries throughout the state. There are so many great wineries in the state, that it can be overwhelming to plan a trip. Thankfully, there are a lot of great Virginia Wine Bus Tours available that can do the work for you!

Wine bus tours are a great experience. I have been on many myself, including several of the recommendations in this guide. One of the great benefits is that you can leave the driving and planning to someone else, which leaves you free to enjoy the wineries, scenery, and food!

Another major benefit of wine bus tours is that they provide you with a designated driver and knowledgeable chauffeurs who can teach you more about the wineries in Virginia.

Many of the winery bus tours in Virginia offer pick-up service from a central location in Virginia or even in Washington, D.C. The tours will give you the perfect way to explore all of the great wineries that Virginia has to offer.

Virginia Wine Bus Tour Comparison Chart

Private tours vs group tours.

Winery

There are generally two kinds of wine-tasting bus tours: private tours and group tours.

Private tours are tours you can arrange for yourself and your friends and family. You will be the only people on the tour, and you generally have a lot of freedom in terms of where you go. This option is generally more expensive, but it can be great if you have a larger group to help split the costs.

Private wine-tasting tours are especially popular for special occasions, like bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and more. They often offer party bus wine tours. Private tours are often run by local limousine services and feature professional chauffeurs.

Group tours are generally less expensive and feature joining other people for a pre-set wine tour. You have less control over the destinations, but the planning is all done for you by the tour company.

I’ve had a great time on several group wine tours. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends who share a love for wine!

Wish Wish Wine Tours

Wish Wish Wine Tours operates out of Charlottesville, Virginia. I took this tour with a friend a few years back and had a great experience. They currently have two Hop-On Wine Tours:

Hop-On Wine Tour – Barboursville = I took this tour and it was fabulous. You get to visit 3 wineries and 1 cidery, which provides a nice sampling of local Virginia wines.

One of the wineries that you visit is Barboursville, which is the largest winery in Virginia. It features a massive main tasting room where you will get to taste a wide variety of reds, whites, reserves, and sparkling wines. Their wine is excellent, particularly some of their reserves. They also have food and snacks available for sale.

When stopping at Barboursville I recommend taking some time to walk down the road and explore the historic building ruins nearby.

You will also get to visit Reynard Florence Vineyard, Castle Hill Cider, and Keswick Vineyards, which are all beautiful vineyards in the Charlottesville area.

The tour can pick you up at one of three major Charlottesville hotels = Boar’s Head Inn, Holiday Inn Monticello, or OMNI Hotel.

Hop-On Wine Tour – Nelson 151 = This wine tour features 4 wineries along Route 151, which is a gorgeous scenic route in Virginia. 10 Experiences for Wine Lovers in Virginia's Blue Ridge

Friday, September 13, 2019 4:00 PM by Casey L. Higgins

winery tours virginia

Wine with views. Wine with medals. Wine with food pairings. In Virginia’s Blue Ridge, we have all of those and more. In fact, Virginia’s Blue Ridge is a supreme destination for wine lovers tasting their way across our vast Commonwealth of vineyards.

But don’t stop at winery visits; there’s a meadery, restaurants, bars, shops, and festivals to attend.

1. Scenic Views & Wine

Roanoke Winery

Roanoke’s Valhalla Vineyards   (pictured above) is a mountaintop wine destination you won’t want to miss. Bask in the sun on the deck or retreat to the beautiful timber frame patio; the view is incredible whichever you choose. Do take time to see the wine cave dug 60 feet below ground. Tours are offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at noon and 6 p.m. Reservations are required.

Events at Valhalla >

The views unroll before the tasting room at Blue Ridge Vineyard in Eagle Rock, bowing to the gorgeous mountains in the distance. It’s the perfect backdrop for their special events and for impromptu photo sessions with your besties.

Wines by Blue Ridge Vineyard >

2. Food & Wine

Acclaimed as the “Best Downtown Restaurant” in local voting and a two-time honoree on the “Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S.” list by OpenTable , Alexander’s in downtown Roanoke is an upscale option for a special night out. Excellent seafood, fowl, and Virginia meats are a filling foundation for the delicate sides, salads, and small plates that round out the menu. Wait staff can help you choose the perfect wine to pair with each course of your meal; just ask!

Alexander's Sample Menu >

Frankie Rowland’s Steakhouse offers all the buzz words one might look for on a menu: Maine lobster, Certified Angus beef, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes…and that makes Frankie’s one of the finest steakhouses in Roanoke and Virginia’s Blue Ridge. More than 120 wines are available to accompany your choice of entrée. Frankie’s is a great place to celebrate a special occasion.

Frankie Rowland's Menu >

If there’s such a thing as a fancy pizza place, Fortunato in downtown Roanoke is it. Not only is the pizza fancy, but so are the pasta and salad options. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the extensive wine list is a robust display of predominantly Italian wine. Go all out with a bottle of 2013 Terra di Lavoro Aglianico-Piedirosso from Campania. At $180 plus a $20 cork fee, your anniversary (or even a proposal) is worth it.

Fortunato Menu >

For tapas and wine, there’s no other place to consider than Rockfish Food & Wine . A strong emphasis is placed on wine at Rockfish (as the name implies). Their library includes more than 270 labels, and a 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. happy hour is offered daily. If you’re in Roanoke on Wednesday, score 20% off your choice of an in-house bottle. Want to try something new? Thursday’s are for wine tastings and special savings on Olivia’s bottle of the week. Snack on fried oysters, a delightful charcuterie, beet bruschetta, house chorizo, or she crab bisque. For the main meal, a beautiful blackened trout, pan seared scallops, and heritage pork loin are among your options.

3. Hiking & Wine

There’s nothing like a great glass of crisp, refreshing wine after a hike. And you won’t want to travel far, or else you might decide to skip it altogether. Don’t. Don’t skip the wine. We’ve made it easy for you!

Some of our top hike-and-wine pairings are Peaks of Otter with nearby Peaks of Otter Winery , Roaring Run with nearby Blue Ridge Vineyard , and Bottom Creek Gorge with nearby AmRhein’s Wine Cellars . Need more suggestions? We have a blog post for that.

4. Annual Wine Festivals & Events

Taste a wide variety of wines when you attend a wine festival in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Indeed, the wineries come to you and offer their best and newest bottles for wine lovers. Among our favorites is the annual Horse & Hound Wine Festival hosted each July by Peaks of Otter Winery at Johnson’s Orchard in Bedford . It’s a family (including your pups!) friendly event with sprinklers, a foam machine, and other entertainment for the kiddos. Ages 12 and younger are free. There are typically seven Virginia wineries present and pouring alongside food, craft, and artisan vendors. Proceeds from the festival benefit Commonwealth Search & Rescue, Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue, Inc., and All-American Mutt Rescue.

Each September nearly 30 wineries converge on Crazy Horse Marina in Moneta for the two-day Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival . Artisans, crafters, and food vendors provide plenty of things to peruse while live music keeps things fun and enjoyable. The festival is rain or shine, and you can arrive by boat, if you wish. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome, and chalets (tents with tables, chairs) for parties of 12 to 25 can be reserved.

Sample something worldly at the International Wine Festival in January. Hosted by the Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke, you’ll be delighted to find more than 30 international wines and a few craft beers, too. The festival is a 21 and older event featuring hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and entertainment. The galleries of the Taubman Museum of Art will be open for your perusal.

Daleville Town Center Pavilion is a hot spot for seasonal concerts, but it’s also the venue for the annual Virginia Beer & Wine Festival each June. Eight to 10 wineries are in attendance with nearly 30 breweries and cideries, a few food trucks, musical guests, and vendors. A souvenir tasting glass and 20 samples are included with your ticket. In 2019, VIP tickets provided unlimited samples, a stainless-steel pint glass, free food in the covered VIP seating area, and a VIPs only restroom…and that was just for the festival. VIPs also received two free tickets to Friday Fridays at 5, Party at the Pavilion, and the Daleville Summer Concert Series. Game plan for 2020? Be among the 75 VIP ticket holders to score big.

5. Stay at a Winery

Beliveau Farm Winery in Blacksburg is a beautiful property that makes wine and beer, in addition to operating a Manor House B&B for an overnight stay. Enjoy the delicious wine and take in the beautiful views, all in the same location where you can spend the night!

Beliveau Farm >

6. Wine Shopping

Perhaps there’s not much time to taste, or maybe you know exactly what you want...That’s when knowing where to buy great wine comes in handy, and we can point the way.

Mr. Bill’s Wine Cellar is located on Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke and has one of the largest wine and craft beer selections in the Star City. Wine Gourmet can be found in the Promenade Park Shopping Center on Electric Road. Their offerings include gourmet foods, gifts, and plenty of wine (about 250 labels) and beer to choose from. Barrel Chest Wine & Beer is also located on Electric Road in Roanoke, and they not only offer a vast array of international and domestic wine and craft beer, but they’re also a nano brewery.

7. Bring Your Pups - Pet-Friendly Wineries

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Chateau Morrisette Winery (@ourdogblue) on Aug 26, 2016 at 8:28am PDT

Traveling with your pooch is smooth sailing as long as you know who loves pups as much as you do. Fortunately, we do! Sip your wine at a pet-friendly winery in Virginia’s Blue Ridge, like AmRhein’s Wine Cellars in Roanoke, Beliveau Estate Winery  in Blacksburg, Blue Ridge Vineyard in Eagle Rock,  Peaks of Otter Winery in Bedford, and Virginia Mountain Vineyards in Fincastle.

For details on the inside vs. outside specifics of these wineries and others, check out this Dog-Friendly Wineries list on BringMyDogs.com , a tremendous resource full of info on pet-friendly spots in the region.

8. Tasting at Peaks of Otter Winery

There’s an amazing explosion of flavors happening at Peaks of Otter Winery . So much so that we feel the need to give them their own section on our list of 10 Wine Experiences. I was a skeptic the first time I visited Peaks of Otter Winery. I couldn’t imagine some of these wine flavors (so I overthought it and nearly gagged), but then I gave in and sipped my way to finding delightful blends. So...tag, you’re it.

You’re hereby challenged to try Blueberry Muffin and Cherry Cheesecake (the easy ones), and then go on to conquer a sip of Chili Dawg, Kiss the Devil, and Salty Frog. Check out the Peaks Wine List for more nifty names and concoctions.

9. Wine Flights

A wine bar and wood-fired kitchen, Tizzone in Daleville is also a great place to enjoy a wine flight. Choose any three house wines and set sail. The house wines include whites and reds, sweet and dry, from Spain, California, Argentina, Italy, and Washington. Check out their vast Drink Menu before you go.

10. Live Music

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Blue Ridge Vineyard (@blueridgevineyard) on May 1, 2016 at 11:07am PDT

Wine can be enjoyed in any number of settings. Quiet and alone with a book, giggly with a friend, with dinner, or even under the stars while a band plays. We rather enjoy them all, but there’s something about live music with friends and a great bottle of wine that can’t be beat.

Wineries that feature (occasionally seasonal) live music:

  • Hickory Hill
  • Blue Ridge Vineyard
  • Valhalla Vineyards

What do you love in a wine experience? With any luck, a great view, an excellent meal, and lively entertainment are among the top. Truly, however you choose to taste your way through the wine offerings of Virginia’s Blue Ridge will be perfect.

Do check out the Cheers Trail Passport  (text 'CHEERS' TO (540) 253-4311 to download) as one more way to guide you through all our wine, beer, cider, and spirit destinations, as well as score savings as you go. Five check-ins will earn you a nifty t-shirt, too! So sip that wine, snap a pic, and tag it #VBRCheers . Friends back home will definitely experience FOMO.
