This Route 66 road trip is an all-time classic that has been etched into American folklore by those migrating west along “The Mother Road” during the Great Depression of the 1930s.  Route 66 offers over 2300 miles of nostalgic Americana, ever-changing scenery and some of America’s best cities. Starting your road trip in Chicago ,  you’ll cross through eight States as you drive to Route 66’s “End of the Trail” sign in sunny Santa Monica, Los Angeles.

All of our American road trips can be tailored to meet your requirements. Do you have more or less than 15 days for your road trip? No problem, we can bolt on extra nights to allow more time to explore or shorten the number of destinations as required.

Welcome to Chicago, Illinois

You’ll start your Route 66 road trip by spending three nights and two exciting days in Chicago. Many start by enjoying Chicago’s famous pizza or by going to the top of Willis Tower to watch the sunset and get the lay of the land. You’ll collect your wheels when you leave Chicago to begin the drive down Route 66. For now, you’ll be pounding the pavement from one outstanding attraction to another.

A full day to explore north of Chicago River

Most visitors to Chicago head straight to the ‘Magnificent Mile’, a vibrant, bustling area which is home to upscale shops, trendy restaurants and posh hotels. Landmarks include the historic Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower and the 100-story Hancock Center, which has a rooftop observation deck called 360 Chicago. Spend the rest of the day exploring some of the other attractions found north of the Chicago River. These include Navy Pier, Wrigley Field and the beaches along Lake Michigan’s shoreline.

A full day to explore south of Chicago River

On your final full day in Chicago, we recommend that you spend time visiting the city’s attractions that are located south of the Chicago River. Some of America’s very best museums are found here, including the Art Institute, the Alder Planetarium, and the Field Museum of Natural History. Be sure to stroll around Millennium Park; you’ll find world-famous outdoor artworks like Cloud Gate and Crown Fountain for those all-important Social Media snaps. Lastly, before leaving town, make sure you spend at least one evening partying at Buddy Guy’s Legends Nightclub.

Collect your car and set off down Route 66

Start your engines; iconic Route 66 awaits. After collecting your road trip wheels, we recommend you head to Jackson Blvd, where you can pass the small Route 66 sign that marks the beginning of your Mother Road adventure. Driving Route 66 through Illinois is super easy, as it’s really well-signposted and surprisingly rural once you’ve left the city of Chicago. Along the way to Springfield, you’ll enjoy highlights such as Route 66 obsessed Pontiac and the historic Standard Oil Gas Station in Odell. Once you arrive in Springfield, history enthusiasts will want to visit Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb, the Lincoln Presidential Museum and the Lincoln Home.

Next up, you'll cruise southwest to St Louis

Onto St. Louis today, which sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. Highlights include the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Citygarden and the famous Gateway Arch National Park. If you have time, try to catch a baseball game here at the Cardinals stadium, which is located right in the heart of the city. Remember that you’ll be provided with a detailed Road Trip Pack, which will guide you through all the Route 66 roadside attractions and much more.

Visit the iconic Route 66 stop off of Meramec Caverns

Today, you’ll continue southwest through the State of Missouri. En route, we recommend you stop by Meramec Caverns, which are located in the Ozarks region. These vast caverns are an extensive set of limestone caves offering unforgettable underground tours. You’ll finish the day in Springfield, Missouri, which is officially recognised as the birthplace of Route 66.

Continue along Route 66 to Tulsa and Oklahoma City

Get an early start and continue along the Mother Road to Tulsa. You’ll pass through Joplin before skimming through a corner of Kansas and into Oklahoma. In Tulsa, we recommend visiting the Philbrook Museum, home to a vast art collection housed in an Italian-style villa surrounded by idyllic gardens. During the afternoon, you’ll continue onto Oklahoma City. Visit the Bricktown District for an evening meal at one of the numerous diners and restaurants. Lastly, before turning in for the evening, consider visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial, which remembers the victims and survivors of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. This perfectly executed dedication is especially moving at night.

Your Route 66 holiday reaches Texas today

Spend the morning at the incredible National Cowboy and Western Museum before checking out the real-life cowboys over in Stockyard City. If you still have the energy, then the daring amongst you should check out some of the activities at Riversport Adventure Park. Our amazing Road Trip Pack will show you the way to Amarillo. You’ll pass some fantastic Route 66 museums along the way, packed with nostalgic Americana, classic cars and more. Once you hit Amarillo, there’s only one place for any true road-tripper to go for dinner. The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery (pictured) is simply a must, just make sure you arrive hungry, as the portions are HUGE!

Santa Fe or Albuquerque? The choice is yours...

Today’s drive are packed with classic Route 66 attractions like Cadillac Ranch (pictured), The Midpoint Cafe and the Route 66 Auto Museum in Santa Rosa. You can then opt to finish the day with an overnight stop in either Albuquerque or Santa Fe. We’ll talk you through the pluses of both options when you request a quote from us. Santa Fe lies on the old or original Route 66 route, offering an upmarket spa town feel. Albuquerque lies on the newer, more direct route and is famous for the Sandia Peak Tramway and “Breaking Bad” filming locations.

Through Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park

El Morro is a detour worth considering to see ‘inscription rock’, a large sandstone pueblo where travellers since the 17th century have left messages. Later in the day, you’ll pass through two Natural Wonders – Painted Desert (pictured) and Petrified Forest National Park, before getting your head down in the classic Route 66 overnight stop of Winslow in Arizona.

The awe-inspiring Grand Canyon is located one hour’s drive north of Route 66. The world’s largest and most famous geological wonder is simply staggering. Two billion years in the making, the Colorado River has forged a mile deep, 18 mile wide and 277 mile long slice into the Arizona landscape that will stay with you forever. Before leaving Route 66 however, you’ll get the chance to experience another natural wonder in the form of Meteor Crater. Not as large a hole as the Grand Canyon, but in many ways just as spectacular and intriguing.

From The Grand Canyon to Las Vegas via The Hoover Dam

Again, it’s not strictly on Route 66, but Las Vegas is so close that it would be rude not to pop by and say hello. Along the way, you’ll pass by some iconic Mother Road locations like Seligman and Hackberry General Store. As you get closer to Vegas, you’ll pass over the Hoover Dam before seeing the bright lights of Las Vegas in the distance.

A second day to enjoy all that Las Vegas offers

If your head hurts after a big night out, then why not chill out by one of the fantastic swimming pools that adorn every hotel. Alternatively, you can explore the legendary ‘Strip’ and book tickets to see an outstanding show. Witness the Bellagio Fountains in full flow, or take a Gondola ride at the Venetian. A visit to The Neon Museum might appeal, where you can experience the Las Vegas magic of a bygone age by touring the Neon Boneyard. Complete your drive down Route 66 to Los Angeles

The iconic Santa Monica Pier signals the final stop of your Route 66 holiday. To celebrate the finale of your journey, we suggest you enjoy a rewarding meal at one of the Pier’s many eateries that overlook the Pacific Ocean and take a picture by “The End of Trail” sign. After lunch, we suggest you take a stroll and explore Santa Monica and neighbouring Venice Beach.

A full day to spend visiting LA's famous sights

Spend the day relaxing by the pool after your Route 66 adventure, or head out to explore the sites of Los Angeles. There’s plenty to keep you busy. Hollywood is synonymous with glitz and glamour, and it’s the most visited part of the city. The Griffith Observatory is just a short drive northeast of here, perched high on a hill overlooking the urban sprawl. This famous landmark is well worth visiting and offers excellent views of the legendary Hollywood Sign. We could go on, so if you want more time in LA, then just let us know.

Arrive in chicago.

Today you’ll arrive at Chicago International Airport, collect your hire car and make the drive to your accommodation. Depending on your time of arrival you may wish to head out and explore or spend the evening relaxing in your hotel.

This morning you can get out and explore the gothic grandeur of America’s Second City. Chicago rests on the banks of Lake Michigan and there are some great parks along its length where you can enjoy a stroll. Culture lovers should head to the iconic Arts Institute of Chicago, which boasts a world class collection of 19 th and 20 th century art. 

There will be ample opportunities for eating in Chicago. Be sure to visit Lou Mitchell’s for breakfast for an authentic diner experience. Don’t forget to try a slice of deep dish pizza - an essential part of any visit to Chicago.

Chicago – St Louis

From Chicago you’ll head out to St Louis on the first section of Route 66. Here you’ll pass those quintessentially midwestern cornfields and lonesome prairies. All along Route 66 you’ll see roadside attractions. On this stretch is the Gemini Giant in Wilmington and the statue of lumberjack Paul Bunyon in Atlanta, Illinois.

You’ll arrive in St Louis in the afternoon. The city is known as the Gateway to the West and was the starting point for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The famous St Louis Arch commemorates the journey. Check out the National Blues Museum for a fascinating insight into the history of this music. In the evening hit one of the city’s superb BBQ joints for delicious, hearty cuisine.

St Louis - Springfield

Today you’ll pass through the Ozark Highlands region, bound for Springfield, Illinois – the former home of Abraham Lincoln. En route, be sure to visit Meramec Caverns, a network of limestone caves once used as a hideout by outlaw Jesse James. He actually escaped from the law via the underground river.

When you reach Springfield you can visit Lincoln’s house, which stands in a conservation area that looks much as it did in the 19th century. Spend the evening in this pretty town and immerse yourself in its history.

Springfield – Tulsa – Oklahoma City

Leaving Springfield, you’ll drive on through the southeastern corner of Kansas for Oklahoma City. This section of the route includes much of the original road was built in the 1920s. En route you’ll stop in Tulsa, a city known for its fabulous art deco architecture. Visit Decopolis, Tulsa’s art deco museum, to discover more about the history of this movement and how the city adopted it. You’ll arrive into Oklahoma City in the afternoon. The city boasts a wealth of classic Route 66 architecture, from motels to gas stations, in the distinctive atomic age style.

Oklahoma City – Amarillo

Driving out from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Texas, you’ll see the land change as you enter the wide open plains of the Texas Panhandle. Around 200 years ago this region would have been filled with buffalo as far as the eye can see.

Take a detour to the town of Clinton to check out the Route 66 Museum, which is filled with memorabilia and artefacts that commemorate this iconic road. You’ll also pass plenty of other historic buildings, including Shamrock’s U-Drop Inn gas station and diner – an extraordinary art deco wonder that would look more at home in Paris or New York than out here on the plains.

Spend the evening in Amarillo, which is at the heart of cattle country. Meat lovers should visit the Big Texan Steak Ranch for dinner.

Amarillo - Albuquerque

As you leave Amarillo, you can drive by the famous Cadillac Ranch – an open air art installation of 10 Cadillacs buried in the ground. Passing on to Adrian you can stop and enjoy an “ugly crust” pie at the MidPoint Café - which claims to be the halfway point along Route 66. It’s also a great spot to pick up some Route 66 merchandise. 

Later that day you’ll cross the border into New Mexico and arrive in to the state’s largest city of Albuquerque, which will be your base for the next three nights.

Albuquerque – Santa Fe – Albuquerque

Today you can spend the morning in Albuquerque before driving an hour north to the state capital of Santa Fe. This lovely Spanish colonial city was founded in 1610, making it the third oldest city in the US. It boasts an excellent cathedral and some good museums. Art lovers will appreciate the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, which showcases the work of New Mexico’s most celebrated artist.

You’ll return to Albuquerque later that evening for a hearty dinner.

Albuquerque - Holbrook

It’s time to hit the road again, travelling the 420 km from Albuquerque to Holbrook, Arizona. The scenery is notably different as you leave New Mexico behind, with bright red rock mesas looming on the horizon. 

Depending on the route you choose to take, the drive may take you through Petrified Forest National Park, a bizarre landscape of fossilized trees. You’ll discover ruins dating back thousands of years from the various peoples who called this place home. After spending a day exploring, head up to Kachina Point to watch the sunset over the Painted Desert. 

Arrive in Holbrook in the evening, where you can stay at the Wigwam Motel, a kitschy roadside attraction that has been drawing visitors since the 1950s.

Holbrook – Grand Canyon/ Williams

Today you’ll leave Holbrook, heading for the Grand Canyon.

Meteor City, Arizona makes for an interesting stop along the way. This iconic geodesic dome was once a popular trading post. Nearby is the impressive Meteor Crater, which was created by an impact from space 50,000 years ago.

Driving on, you’ll reach the town of Williams, which is located at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Here you’ll find plenty of hiking trails and viewpoints where you can marvel at the unimaginable scale of this natural wonder.

Grand Canyon/ Williams – Las Vegas

Rise early to watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon, an unforgettable experience, before packing the car and heading west on the longest stretch of the original Route 66. You’ll pass several classic small towns on the trip, including Seligman. This place is filled with vintage cars, historic diners and 1950s style gas stations. Kingman is another worthy stop, offering an impressive Railway Museum.

As you arrive into Las Vegas nothing can prepare you for the assault on the senses. Even if you’re not much of a gambler, an evening on the Strip is a must.

Today you’ll have a full day to explore Las Vegas and its surroundings. Marvel at the casinos, with their over the top attractions designed to entice you in, watch one of the many Cirque du Soleil shows on the strip or take on the house at the tables. You’ll find some world class restaurants here, alongside cosy bars where you can sit back and enjoy the spectacle with a drink in hand. You can also take a trip out of town to see the majestic Hoover Dam, a vast engineering project in a beautiful setting.

Las Vegas – Santa Monica – Los Angeles Area

Today you’ll head southwest from Las Vegas, travelling through the Mojave Desert with its startling blue skies, cacti dotted hills and entrancing atmosphere. You can stop at Calico Ghost Town, a former silver mining centre long since abandoned.

At Barstow you can take in the Route 66 Museum, which includes objects from those who made it all the way to their destination.

As you arrive into Los Angeles, you’ll pass Hollywood and Beverly Hills en route to Santa Monica – where you can have your photo taken at the iconic “End of the Pier” sign.

Congratulations, you’ve just travelled the entirety of Route 66, a staggering journey of more than 3,000 km.

Los Angeles Area

Today you can spend the day relaxing by the pool or get out and about for one last day of exploration. Visit the beaches of Santa Monica for some sun worshipping or take a stroll around LA’s distinctive neighbourhoods. Virginia is a very old state and there are many historic buildings found here. With a history involving slavery and wars, there are sure to be lingering ghosts. Williamsburg is a colonial city with a few haunted sites including the Wythe House which dates back to 1753. In 1779, Lady Ann Skipwith died here unexpectedly, but she did not leave. Maybe she stuck around to haunt her husband who married her sister.

The Boxwood Inn in Newport News is another spooky location filled with up to seven ghost residents. After being built in 1896, the building has gone through many stages. Today, visitors can expect a spooky encounter if they chose to walk the halls.

The Battle of Cold Harbor took place in 1864. Since thousands of soldiers died here in such a violent way, it makes sense that some still walk here. Visitors to the battleground have reported seeing lights, smelling gunpowder, or hearing horses.

Lastly, make sure to visit Bacon’s Castle in Surry County. During the home’s long and sordid history, many enslaved people died here which might have lead to it being haunted. If you visit this 1650s era building, do not be surprised to hear strange sounds or see objects moving on their own.

Begin in Virginia Beach, the biggest beach town in the state. Here you will find great family-friendly beaches and unique attractions.

Next, head over to nearby Norfolk. Best known for its military base and large port, there are a ton of fun things to do here for everyone. If you like seeing shows or operas, check out Chrysler Hall and the Virginia Opera. You might also enjoy the Chrysler Museum of Art or the National Maritime Center where you can find the world’s largest battleship.

Drive the iconic Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to reach the small town of Cape Charles. This cute, coastal town is a great place to find a quaint B&B or camp. Spend time here fishing, boating, or exploring the nature that surrounds the town.

Keep heading north to the Assateague Island National Seashore. You will find the idyllic seaside town of Chincoteague, wild ponies, and miles of beaches perfect for fishing and water sports.

The Natural Tunnel near Duffield runs 300-yards through the Appalachian Mountains. The tunnel is so large, that it has been used as a train route since the late 1800s. You can take a tour into the depths. If you visit around Christmastime, then check out the light display they create inside.

You might not pair Virginia and swamps in your mind, but the Great Dismal Swamp is found in this state and is worth a visit. This is a great place to see wildlife, including birds, deer, black bears, bobcats, and river otters. The preserved forests and marshland are a great place to get lost.

Abandoned Places Road Trip

One of the best abandoned places to visit in Virginia is Swannanoa Palace in the mountains of Afton. You can take tours of this 1912 palace and witness its grandeur. Next, Fleetwood Church in Brandy Station is a colorful, wooden structure partially hidden by trees. This church was built in 1850 and stood watch over a Civil War battle. Now it stands with peeling paint and ghosts hiding inside.

In Staunton, you will find the DeJarnette Center, an old sanatorium that practiced eugenics. The building has a long history that began in the 1930s. It has stood empty and formidable since the ’90s.

Presidents of the USA Road Trip

Virginia is known as the “Birthplace of Presidents” and if you are interested in history or U.S. politics, then you should plan some Virginia road trips. The one we highlight here focuses on presidential homes only, but there are other sites and monuments related to presidents that you can visit.

Start at the beginning with George Washington’s Mount Vernon, not far from Washington D.C. This estate had been in Washington’s family for years before he eventually inherited it in 1761. He lived there until his death in 1799. You can come tour the home and farm as well as see the tomb of America’s first president.

Next, visit Monticello near Charlottesville. This home was designed by Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president. Construction took place from 1769 to1809. Jefferson was a slave-owner and those he enslaved built the home and farmed the land. It is important to learn about this dark and sad part of American history. Visiting Monticello gives you an opportunity to see what it would have been like to live on a plantation.

Montpelier is less than an hour from Charlottesville and is where James Madison, the fourth U.S president, called home. This grand estate has great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can also find Madison’s grave here.

Another historic home to visit belonged to fifth president James Monroe. Also found near Charlottesville, the Highland estate is rich in colonial history. Today, much research is being done to learn about the enslaved people who lived here.

Fall Foliage Road Trip

Virginia is one of the best states for a fall foliage road trip. When autumn rolls around, the trees pop off in bright reds, oranges, and gold. Blue Ridge Parkway Road Trip

The Blue Ridge Parkway is an iconic U.S. road trip connecting North Carolina and Virginia. Drive through the mountains and lush forests to discover cute small towns, jaw-dropping overlooks , and folk history. This is one of the best scenic drives in Virginia.

Make sure to pull off near milepost 339 so you can hike to Crabtree Falls. The two and a half mile loop trail is ranked as moderate to strenuous and involves steep and rocky areas. The payoff is catching sight of the waterfall flowing down a sixty-foot rock face.

At milepost 171, you will find the historic Marby Mill, which dates back to 1903. It is one of the most photographed stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Next, stop at milepost 76.5 and Apple Orchard Mountain. This is the highest point on the parkway on the Virginia side. Make sure to hike to Apple Orchard Falls while you are here.

There are so many stops you can make on your Blue Ridge Parkway road trip that it is impossible to name them all! One last stop to mention, though, is the Natural Bridge near Lexington and milepost 63. This 215-foot tall rock bridge has been awing people for centuries, including Monacan Native Americans and Thomas Jefferson, who actually owned it at one point.

Historic Triangle Road Trip

The famous Virginia historic triangle road trip will take you to the three colonial towns of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown. This road trip can be done in just a weekend since the towns are all within thirty minutes of each other. You will drive the Colonial Parkway to each location as you experience one of the most popular Virginia road trips.

Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas with the founding year of 1607. Today, you can walk through the living history museum, including a reconstructed Native American village, colonial fort, and other replicas. The archaeological museum has almost two million artifacts.

Colonial Williamsburg is another living history museum. There are 88 original buildings and even more recreations. Re-enactors walk around helping you feel as if you have stepped back in time. Ride down the streets in a horse-drawn carriage for an even more authentic feel.

The last stop on the Virginia historic triangle road trip is Yorktown. This was the site of the 1781 Battle of Yorktown, the last battle of the American Revolution, and where General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. You can visit the battlefield and the Victory Center.

Civil War Road Trip

Virginia was the site of many bloody battles and important events during the U.S. Civil War. Because of this, Virginia is a destination for serious history buffs. This is one of the best Virginia road trips for anyone interested in America’s turbulent past.

Richmond was the Confederate capital during the war and has a couple of places to visit for a history lesson. Richmond National Battlefield Park was the site of two Union attempts to capture the city. You can also visit the American Civil War Museum in Richmond.

Two battles occurred near Manassas. The First Battle of Bull Run happened in 1861 and is considered the first major battle of the war. Today you can come to the Manassas National Battlefield Park to honor those who died.

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields National Military Park is a somber place to visit but is necessary to see the full scope of this tragic war. Over 100,000 soldiers were killed or wounded over the course of eighteen months. This is the world’s second-largest military park.

You have to visit the Appomattox Court House and National Historical Park in order to see where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in 1865. Come stand in the place where the Confederates laid down their weapons. There are reconstructed buildings, a museum, and ranger programs.

Virginia Lighthouses Road Trip

There is just something about lighthouses that draws people in as much as they repel ships. These structures are perfect for nautical photographs and offer great views. You could easily pair this road trip with coastal Virginia road trips.

The Jones Point Lighthouse in Alexandria is the last remaining river lighthouse in Virginia. It has been standing on the Potomac River since 1855. Though you can’t go inside, you can still see it from the ground.

The Old Point Comfort Lighthouse is the second oldest light on the Chesapeake Bay and is found at Fort Monroe. It was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson and built in 1802. It is not open to the public, but you can snap photos of it from the street.

The oldest lighthouse on the bay as well as the third oldest in the country is the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse. It was built in 1792. You can go up this ninety-foot structure for views of First Landing State Park and nearby Virginia Beach.

Just across the street from the old lighthouse, you can see the New Cape Henry Lighthouse which replaced the other in 1881. This one is a bit taller and is a stark black and white.

At 191 feet, the Cape Charles Lighthouse is the tallest in Virginia and second tallest in the country. Unfortunately, it is not open to climb, but you can see it from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Bird-Watching Road Trip
