- Tally's Blood To Tour Again After Twenty-year Hiatus
25 April 2023
Twenty years after it was last seen in full-scale production, The Gaiety Ayr, Perth Theatre and Cumbernauld Theatre Company are combining to present a brand-new tour of Ann Marie Di Mambro’s modern Scottish classic Tally’s Blood .
Directed by Ken Alexander, who also directed the 2003 production, Tally’s Blood will open in Perth Theatre from Thursday 21 until Saturday 30 September 2023 before touring to Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy; Cumbernauld Theatre at Lanternhouse; Eastwood Park Theatre, Giffnock; Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling and Theatre Royal, Dumfries, concluding its run at The Gaiety from Wednesday 1 until Friday 3 November.
There is hardly a town or city in Scotland that doesn’t have its own Italian café, chippy or ice-cream parlour. And it’s in one of these much-loved establishments that the story of Tally’s Blood starts…
Lucia can wrap her aunt and uncle around her little finger, cry to order, and she doesn’t like going to school. She likes Hughie though, so much so that they seal their friendship with a secret ceremony in the storeroom of her family’s ‘Tally’ shop – aided by an illicit bottle of ‘ginger’.
Auntie Rosinella loves Lucia like all the children she never had, but will anyone – particularly a ‘Scotch’ boy – ever be good enough for the girl she loves ‘best in the whole wide world’’?
As their childhood camaraderie blossoms into romance, Lucia and Hughie face more challenges than their countries taking opposing sides in the Second World War.
Told with heart and humour, Tally’s Blood follows the lives of an Italian immigrant family in Scotland, from the 1930s through to the 1950s, in a sweeping tale of poverty, passion and prejudice that travels from the west of Scotland to the sun-baked Italian countryside.
First performed at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh in 1990, Tally’s Blood is a Set Text for National 5 English.
Welcoming the new tour, announced on Italian Liberation Day - 25 April 2023 - Ann Marie Di Mambro said:
"Of all the pieces I've written in the last 30+ years Tally's Blood is closest to my heart. It delves into my own Scottish-Italian heritage and the stories I was told growing up. I’m very excited at the prospect of a tour marking the 20 th anniversary of the last production and I’m delighted that Ken Alexander is returning to direct it once again.”
Ken Alexander said:
“I have been keen to revisit the play for some time as it has become something of a Scottish classic, known by people across the country but infrequently produced.
It is a piece that, although set between the 1930s and 1950s, has a lot of contemporary resonances - particularly those around multiculturalism and the immigrant experience, and contemporary issues that make us question what brings us together and what pushes us apart in society. However, the thing that appeals to me most is the huge heart that is contained in Ann Marie Di Mambro’s play - drawn very closely from her own family experience as Italian immigrants that settled in Scotland. Her storytelling is full of warmth, nostalgia and affection without ever being overly sentimental. Audiences can expect a rattling good story, laughter, tears and a good night out!”
Jeremy Wyatt, Chief Executive of The Gaiety said:
“ Tally’s Blood is about a key part of Scotland’s history, and the strong bond between Scotland and Italy. And it’s also about the immigrant experience so it’s about Scotland’s present too. On top of that it’s funny, with a dash of romance. No wonder it has a special place in the hearts of so many people I speak to.”
Fraser Morrison, Creative Producer at Cumbernauld Theatre said:
“At Cumbernauld Theatre we recognise the strengths of working in partnership and are delighted to join forces with Perth Theatre and Ayr Gaiety. This powerful and poignant play immediately captured our attention as it explores key themes that are not only relevant to our modern society today, but also resonate deeply with us as a Scottish community. We are confident that this story will strike a chord with our local audience who appreciate stories rooted in truth and authenticity, and who value the power of connection. Furthermore, this collaboration provides a unique opportunity for school groups to engage with our Creative Learning programme alongside this work, and for the general public to enjoy a modern Scottish classic. We look forward to embarking on this exciting journey with our partners and sharing Tally's Blood with audiences across Scotland.”
Nick Williams, Chief Executive of Perth Theatre and Concert Hall said:
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with our friends at The Gaiety and Cumbernauld Theatre Company to bring Tally’s Blood to the stage again. Twenty years since it last toured, I’m sure that Ken Alexander’s new production will provoke warm memories from its many fans and resonate with a new generation of young theatre lovers who are just discovering this poignant love story with its enduring themes and relatable characters.”
Tickets for Tally’s Blood will go on sale this summer, with further information and cast announcement to follow.

We continue our day with time for lunch on our own, before making a visit to the “Queen of the Missions,” Mission Santa Bárbara , the only mission to have remained in Franciscan custody since its founding date. Before leaving Santa Barbara, we take time to appreciate its lovely shops and streets, enjoying lunch on our own and a little time for exploration. Later, we proceed to Solvang, a Danish town where the old-world charm of Northern Europe meets the blue skies of Southern California. Upon arrival, we enjoy a smörgåsbord, a Scandinavian buffet-style meal at a traditional Danish restaurant.

We continue north to visit Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo . St. Junípero Serra is entombed beneath the sanctuary of this mission church. Here we view his sarcophagus, see his room where he passed away in 1784, and view several of his vestments.

After breakfast at our hotel, we’re off to our next visit in Santa Clara, the Mission Santa Clara de Asís , located in the heart of Santa Clara University. Here we learn about the history of the property, see the Barrel Room, and visit the California Missions Museum which hosts miniature to-scale models of all 21 missions. We have lunch on our own and continue to the last of the originally established California Missions, Mission San Francisco Solano , located across from the site of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt.

WORCESTER, MA –– Bobby Dalbec went 3-for-4 and belted his 16th home run as the Worcester Red Sox (26-21)/(61-61) extended their winning streak to six games with a 5-3 victory over the Norfolk Tides (20-28)/(56-67) on Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park Stadium. With the win, the WooSox have now taken the first three games in Norfolk and have won 11 of their last 13 games.
Quinn Priester made his fourth start for Worcester on Thursday afternoon and on his first pitch, Jud Fabian drilled a leadoff home run into the WooSox’ bullpen to give the Tides a quick 1-0 lead. Despite allowing a two-out double and walk, Priester would get out of the inning without further damage.
Entering the fourth, Bobby Dalbec led off the inning for the WooSox with the Tides still up 1-0. Down in the count 1-2, the 29-year-old deposited a hanging splitter out of the ballpark to tie up the game. Leaving the bat at a 108 mph and traveling 418 feet, Dalbec’s blast was just his second home run in August but 16th of the year.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Tides took back the lead, scoring two runs on a double and single to pull ahead, 3-1. This time, it didn’t take long for Worcester’s bats to respond.
With one out and Roman Anthony standing on first after an infield single, Chase Meidroth drilled an RBI triple off the wall in right to make it a one-run game. Nick Sogard followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the game up at three heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Priester remained on the mound for the WooSox to begin the fifth and retired the first two batters but, after allowing a two-out single to Daniel Johnson, was relieved by Brian Van Belle. The reliever needed just two pitches to end the inning, closing the book on Priester’s day. The WooSox starter finished with a line of 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.
In the top of the sixth, Eddy Alvarez gave Worcester their first lead of the day by blasting a lead off home run off the scoreboard in right-center field. It was his 14th of the year and his second in as many days. Jamie Westbrook followed Alvarez’s homer with a walk and advanced to second on Tyler Heineman’s sacrifice bunt. After a balk sent Westbrook to third, Dalton Guthrie drove him in with an RBI bloop single down the left field line to give the WooSox some insurance. By the end of the inning, the WooSox had a 5-3 lead.

Van Belle continued on the mound to begin the eighth inning, having thrown 2.1 scoreless innings thus far. After allowing back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, the right-hander settled down to retire the next three on a pop out, line out, and strikeout. With a two-run lead, Yohan Ramirez entered for the ninth and slammed the door to secure the WooSox’ 5-3 win over the Tides. Van Belle (W, 6-2) earned his sixth victory of the year while Levi Stoudt (L, 0-1) was handed the loss.
Worcester’s come-from-behind victory on Thursday afternoon was their 11th win in their last 13 games and extended their winning streak to a season-high six games––matching their best stretch from 2023 when they won six straight from July 7-16. As the WooSox continue to rack up wins, the bullpen has led the way, combing for a 2.66 ERA with 9.64 K/9 over 54.1 innings since August 7.
The WooSox and Tides will continue their six-game series at 6:35 p.m. on Friday night at Harbor Park Stadium. After signing a Minor League contract with Boston on August 17, Rich Hill will make his first start for Worcester, opening the game opposite Carlos Tavera (5-4, 5.87) for Norfolk. Radio coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.

The Ultimate Tally Hall Fan Headquarters!
Introducing The Ultimate Tally Hall Documentary
Does the name “Just Jargon” ring a bell for you? It will after today. Just Jargon has worked around the clock for months putting together the most comprehensive documentary on Tally Hall that I’ve ever seen. I was happy to have helped them put some pieces together and had a really fun time re-learning everything in the proper order of how it all went down.
From Tally Hall’s initial inception to current day, this documentary covers the good, the bad, and the ugly.
So without further ado, here is the HITS Premiere of The Ultimate Tally Hall Documentary!
Upcoming Q&A with Just Jargon
We will be hanging out in the HITS chat room (yes, we have a chat room) on Saturday, August 7th, 2021, at 6pm Eastern (3pm Pacific) so you can ask all the questions you want answers to.
JOIN US HERE!
To get things started, I asked Just Jargon a couple questions about him and this project and here’s what they had to say:
Hidden In The Sand: How did this project first come about?
Just Jargon: Well, about 5 years ago I became an avid fan of the first two Tally Hall albums but essentially knew nothing beyond that. I would go on to discover Miracle Musical, Joe Hawley Joe Hawley, and Not a Trampoline on my own and it was at that point that I sought out a video that could get me up to speed on everything when I realized how deep this rabbit hole went, but no such video existed. Years later I decided to touch on the subject vaguely but just kept researching and eventually made it a goal to create the definitive documentary.
HITS: How long did it take you?
JJ: I’ve had the idea for about 3 years now but started taking steps towards it 10 months ago when I recorded the first bit of footage that would go on to be used in the end. But it wasn’t until February 2021 that I started actively making it in combination with other things, then in early June I dropped everything else and worked around the clock on it. About 6 solid months of active effort.
HITS: What did you learn from it and what do you hope others will take from it?
JJ: I’ve learned a lot about the history itself, but on a much broader scale I think much more highly of the band and its members than I did before simply because I saw how many hurdles they’d gone through and got a much better understanding of the true passion they put into their work. Tally Hall songs now resonate with me on a much more emotional level as a result, and I’m hoping the same will be true for documentary’s viewers. The goal with this and everything I make is for people to learn the stories of who I talk about and have a newfound sense of respect for them in the end. There are too many good stories that go untold, and that’s all too common if the people they follow don’t make it big. But on the other hand, bigger isn’t better, better is better.
HITS: What’s next for you?
JJ: In terms of what I’m going to do from here on out, I’ll definitely continue making more documentaries and there are a few YouTube figures I have in mind that may be familiar to the Tally Hall audience. But at some point I have another bigger project I want to do. Without saying to much, it carries the same emotional weight to me as Miracle Musical did for Joe and much like him it’s in the back of my mind when I’m working on other things, and I know I’ll have to do it someday.
On behalf of everyone involved in this film… we hope you enjoy The Ultimate Tally Hall Documentary!

this video’s really good! Learned a bunch of stuff about the band, and it’s cool to look at both as a documentary and listen to as a podcast
Obviamente que voy a ver un video de 3 hora hablando de Tally Hall, aunque tendré que verlo por partes :-D/
I look forward to checking it out soon. Thanks!

Taylor Swift and K-pop set the benchmark for global album sales in 2023, new data published by the IFPI reveals.
Following the release last week of its Global Music Report 2023 , the IFPI published three year-end albums charts, breaking down the biggest titles by sales and formats (vinyl and streaming).

Taylor swift, trending on billboard.
The one only non-Korean act to crack the top 20 (at No. 6) was reigning, four-time IFPI global recording artist of the year Taylor Swift , whose album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) also topped the IFPI Global Vinyl Album Chart. Indeed, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) leads an all-TayTay top 3 on the wax tally, ahead of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and Midnights , respectively. Swift snags seven of the top 20, including folklore (at No. 7), Lover (No. 9), evermore (No. 13) and Red (Taylor’s Version) (No. 15).
U.S. country star Morgan Wallen lassos his first IFPI Global Chart No. 1 with One Thing at a Time , his Billboard 200 leader. The 36-track double LP tops the IFPI Global Streaming Album Chart, which counts global streams from both ad-supported and subscription platforms. The streaming list calculates a weighted global unit number taking into account differing economics across regions. Wallen also appears at No. 9 with Dangerous: The Double Album , released in 2021.
“As highlighted in IFPI’s Global Music Report, ” comments Lewis Morrison, director of global charts & certifications at IFPI, revenues from both digital and physical music formats continue to see healthy growth, and the combination of fantastic artistry, format variety and the tireless work of record labels is the foundation on which this growth is built.
