There’s nothing that signals the start of fall better than apple season! And when apple picking in Georgia, there’s no place better to go to than Ellijay, the Apple Capital of Georgia. Here are some of the best apple orchards for apple picking in Ellijay .

For fall and winter, I love surrounding myself with apple things — warm apple cider, delicious baked apples, and apple scented air fresheners fill my house.

It’s our yearly tradition to head up to Ellijay during apple season to pick some apples, grab gallons of spiced apple cider, and get a dozen apple cider donuts.

Top Ellijay Apple Orchards

Looking for the best apple orchards in Ellijay for picking your own apples? You’ve come to the right place! Here are some of my favorites:

1. B.J. Reece Orchards

A family owned and operated orchard, B.J. Reece Orchards has so much to enjoy over its 120 acres. The main highlight, the U-Pick orchards, lets you pick your own apples from 20 different varieties and fill whatever size peck bag you choose.

U-Pick Apple Fields at B.J. Reece Orchards

The U-Pick Apple Season at B.J. Reece Orchards is from August 24, 2024 to October 31, 2024, or until the orchards are all picked over. So it’s definitely best to get an early start picking your own apples!

The orchard is open for picking every day, on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission for the farm costs $8-$26 depending on all the farm fun activities you want to do. Apple picking bags come in sizes half-peck for $10, peck for $20, and half bushel for $40.

The weekday Farm Fun General Admission includes the u-pick, farm slide, corn box, duck races, and petting zoo for $8. The weekend Farm Fun General Admission includes all this plus the wagon ride, pig races, and cow milking for $13. The weekend Super Farm Fun Admission includes everything in the general admission plus the jumping pillow and cow train ride for $18. The weekend Mega Fun Admission (Do it all) includes everything in the Super Farm Fun plus 3 apples in the apple cannon, a scavenger hunt, a pony ride, and the mega slide.

All of these Farm Fun Activities are available from August 24, 2024 to October 31, 2024.

Market & Bakery at B.J. Reece Orchards

In the market, you’ll find a fresh bakery selling apple pies and pastries, along with other fruity baked goods, ciders, jams, salsas, and local crafts.

The market is open year-round on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

2. Hillcrest Orchards and Farms

Hillcrest Orchards and Farms is a family-owned and operated apple orchard in Ellijay that’s been growing apples since 1946. They offer u-pick apples, farm fun, a market, and even an Apple Pickin’ Jubilee.

U-Pick Apple Fields at Hillcrest Orchards

The U-Pick Apple Season at Hillcrest Orchards is from August 31, 2024 through November 30, 2024 or until the apples are all gone (generally into November).

The orchard is open for picking every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in September and October, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in November.

Admission for the farm costs $14 on Mondays through Fridays and $22 on Saturdays and Sundays. Apple picking bags are available for purchase.

Included in your weekday admission are swimming pig races, a petting farm, wagon rides, a playground, giant slides, trike rides, jumping pillows, a ball zone, a soccer challenge, ping-pong, corn hole, zipper swings, spinning chairs, giant bubbles, and the fairy tale trail.

Weekend admission includes all these plus extra fun like cow milking, live entertainment, an apple tree maze, a vortex tunnel, pedal cart rides, cow train rides, Barney the talking bull, an apple museum, a moonshine museum, a shooting gallery, and mini golf.

Hillcrest Farm Market and Bakery

The Farm Market and Bakery are open every day during the apple season. You can watch the bakers as they make apple cider doughnuts and fried apple pies from scratch.

They also have jams, jellies, apple butter, kitchen gadgets, candy apples, fudge, ice cream, handmade crafts, and more.

3. Red Apple Barn

The history of the Red Apple Barn and the Pritchett family apple orchard and farm dates back to 1927. The barn was built in 1971 to sell their apples and cider. Today, the Red Apple Barn offers u-pick apples, a pumpkin patch, tractor rides, and more.

The U-Pick Apple Season at Red Apple Barn is from August 24, 2024 through October or early November, whenever the apples are all picked over.

The orchard is open for picking on weekends: Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Plus, they’re open for Labor Day from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Columbus Day from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission for the farm costs $11.25. Apple picking bags come in sizes quarter peck for $6, half-peck for $10, peck for $20, and half bushel for $34.

Your admission includes an apple from the orchard, a tractor ride to and from the orchard, a cup of apple cider and an apple cider doughnut, 4 flowers (excluding sunflowers), seeing the animals at the Orchard Barn, playgrounds, tractor tire swings, picnic areas, and access to the pumpkin patch.

The pumpkin patch is open late September or early October.

Apple House Farm Market

In the market, you’ll find fresh apple pies, baked goods, ciders, jams, salsas, honey, gift baskets, and their very own cookbook with local recipes.

The market is open August through December 23 on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Ellijay Apple Picking Season

You’ll want to make sure you go apple picking early enough in the season that the apples aren’t all picked out! When we went in mid-October, there were some slim pickin’s on the trees. I recommend going in September for the best selection.

If you didn’t find the apples you were looking for in the orchards, you can buy them by the peck or bushel from the market.

We made out with a half peck of apples each (some of which I made into baked apples using my Granny’s recipe), a gallon of apple cider (all for me), fresh apple pies and tarts (which we devoured before we even got in the car), and a dozen apple cider donuts (great for breakfast).

Ellijay — the Apple Capital of Georgia

Driving up to the mountains and seeing the foliage begin to change, it is easy to see why Ellijay is considered the Apple Capital of Georgia . The road to Ellijay is dotted left and right with signs for roadside apple stands, apple markets, and pick-your-own apple orchards.

Ellijay and Gilmer County reportedly produce over 250,000 bushels of apples a year. And the biggest event of the season is the annual Georgia Apple Festival . Held during the second and third weekends of October, the Georgia Apple Festival is one of the state’s largest festivals with hundreds of vendors selling food, art, crafts, and of course apples.

With Blue Ridge GA  15 miles to the northeast, the 37,000-acre Cohutta Wilderness  30 miles to the northwest, and the I-285 perimeter just 65 miles south, the town of Ellijay is perfectly positioned to take advantage of all the natural beauty North Georgia has to offer.

Downtown Ellijay is surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains .

But the town’s lower elevation (1,280 feet) makes the weather in Ellijay great for agriculture, with loads of apple orchards, pumpkin patches , and wineries in the area.

1. Apple Picking at B.J. Reece Orchards

Gilmer County is widely known as “the Apple Capital of Georgia.” So it probably comes as no surprise that most locals will recommend apple picking if you ask them what do in Ellijay.

Apple picking in Ellijay is best from early September through the end of October, right as the peak fall colors begin to emerge in North Georgia.

And while there are many great apple orchards in Ellijay to choose from, the family-owned B.J. Reece Orchards ranks among the perennial favorites.

The farm encompasses 120 acres and features 30 different kinds of apples, from classics like Cameo, Fuji, Gala, and Red Delicious to lesser-known varieties like Candy Crisp, Mutsu, Shizuka, and Winecrisp. 

They typically offer u-pick apples starting around Labor Day, but their market offers bagged apples, apple cider donuts, “World Famous” fried pies, and other tantalizing treats throughout the year. 

Visiting Reece Orchards is also one of the most popular things to do in Ellijay for other reasons, including activities such as a petting farm, cow milking demonstrations, and old-fashioned wagon rides.

2. Day Trip to Amicalola Falls State Park

Though there are no real waterfalls in Ellijay GA to speak of, Amicalola Falls is one of several incredible waterfalls near Ellijay that are worthy of a day trip visit. 

Located 20 miles southeast of downtown Ellijay in Dawsonville GA, the 829-acre  Amicalola Falls State Park is home to the tallest waterfall in Georgia (729 feet). 

It’s also home to Georgia’s Appalachian Trail approach, which leads 8.5 miles from the park to the beginning of the AT on Springer Mountain.

Other  hiking trails at Amicalola include the 1-mile Mountain Laurel Loop, the 0.6-mile Creek Trail from the Visitor Center to the reflection pool at the base of the falls, and the wheelchair-accessible 0.3-mile West Ridge Falls Access Trail.

But the most popular hike is the 1-mail Base of the Falls Trail, which climbs to a remarkable view of Amicalola Falls via a series of stairs and observation decks.

It’s rated moderate to strenuous due to the steep slope, but it’s an absolute must if you want to see one of the state of Georgia ‘s 7 natural wonders up close.

3. Explore Downtown Ellijay  

Ellijay is the anglicized form of the Cherokee name Elatseyi ( meaning “new ground” or “green place”), and the area was likely inhabited by indigenous people dating back to the Mississippian culture .

The city of Ellijay was incorporated and designated as the Gilmer County seat in 1834, but remained fairly isolated until the Marietta and Northern Georgia Railroad came to town in 1884.

To get the lay of the land today, head to the Welcome Center across from the courthouse on the square in Downtown Ellijay.

Ask for Joe, the information guru who turned us onto all of the best hiking trails and scenic overlooks in the area. 

The town square is home to many of Ellijay’s best restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Ellijay shopping hotspots such as Mountain Treasures (gift shop), Live the Trail (modern general store), Artful Ellijay (home goods), numerous antique stores, and much more. 

Note that the Ellijay square gets extremely busy and congested with traffic on weekends and at lunchtime on weekdays, especially in peak tourist season.

We recommend going early in the day if you want a parking spot, or when you’re not in any particular rush.

4. Family Fun on the Farm at Hillcrest Orchards

Now in its 75th year of operation, this family-owned farm is run by Janice and Lynn Hale along with their daughter, Kristin, and grandson Jackson.

Widely considered one of the best u-pick apple orchards in Georgia, Hillcrest Orchards also offers an array of other fun, family-friendly activities, from corn mazes, cow milking, and a petting farm to pig races and wagon rides.

Their apple picking season begins September 1, with a u-pick orchard that includes Rome Beauty, Golden Delicious, Mutsu, Granny Smith, Goldrush, Arkansas Black, and Yates apples.

The Hillcrest market also offers other types of apples (including Pink Lady, Fuji, Cameo, and Jonagold), as well as honey, jams, jellies, and delicious fresh-baked apple pies, cider doughnuts, and apple fritters.

Pre-registered tours of the farm also are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

5. Get Cultured at the Gilmer Arts Center

With its mission to “promote passionate interest and active participation in the arts,” the Gilmer Arts Center is the cultural hub for the town of Ellijay, and for Gilmer County as a whole. 

Located just off the Ellijay Square, the center provides an array of seasonal events and educational opportunities for all ages, including myriad disciplines in the literary, performing, and visual arts. 

Classes and workshops for the 2022-2023 season include everything from Summer Drama Camps and Stained Glass to Painting, Tai Chi, EmPowerFlow Yoga, and more. 

Upcoming events include  live music from Kool Breeze featuring Jim Richter (Oct 7), a theatrical production of Bette & Joan (Oct 8-16), the 2nd Annual Golf For The Arts fundraiser (Oct 19), and a murder mystery dinner theater (Oct 28). 

Their art galleries will also host the annual Fall Art Show in 2022, with impressive paintings and other work from an array of local artists available for purchase.

6. Go River Tubing with Cartecay River Experience

With two rivers passing through the city of Ellijay, perhaps it’s no surprise that water sports such as river tubing , kayaking , and rafting are especially popular in summer. 

The Cartecay River Experience offers two different Ellijay tubing options for guests to choose from, including a family-friendly, 1.5-mile Lazy River Experience and the 3-mile Adventure River Experience.

The latter option is best for guests ages 5 and up, and will occasionally get cancelled after heavy rains, when the rivers’ water rise and begin to rush. Call before you go to make sure which tubing options are available. 

Tubing rentals range from $13 to $16, and push sticks can be rented for $3 or purchased for $5. They also offer kayak rentals for $28 to $32, which includes all the necessary safety gear. 

If you have your own tube or kayak , but want to take advantage of their shuttle services, it costs $7 in cash or $10 per person with a credit card.

7. Harvest Celebration at the Georgia Apple Festival

Between leaf-peepers hoping to catch the vivid fall colors and partiers heading to Oktoberfest in Helen , October is the peak season for visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. 

Held over two weekends every October, the Georgia Apple Festival is easily the most popular of the annual events in Ellijay, attracting thousands of people to the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds.

Celebrating its 51st year in 2021, the Apple Festival in Ellijay features more than 300 vendors selling an array of food (including apples, naturally), drinks, and Appalachian-influenced arts and crafts .

Some even offer on-site demos of how their traditional crafts are made.

Other festival attractions include the ever-popular parade, antique show, and children’s activities (such as a climbing wall).

Note that parking at the fairgrounds is limited, but there’s a free shuttle service. You can find a map  of shuttle bus routes and parking areas on the Georgia Apple Festival website.

8. Hike the CCC Fire Tower Combo Loop at Fort Mountain State Park

Located 17 miles west of Ellijay in Chatsworth GA, Fort Mountain State Park easily ranks among the most beautiful state parks in Georgia , particularly when the fall colors begin to peak. 

The park offers 15 cottages, 70 tent/trailer/RV campsites , 17 walk-in/pioneer/backcountry campsites , and one group shelter.

But even if you can’t stay overnight, Fort Mountain makes an excellent day trip for some of the best hiking near Ellijay GA.

In fact, the #1 thing to do at Fort Mountain State Park is to explore its 25+ miles of hiking, horseback riding , and mountain biking trails. If you can only do one, the CCC Fire Tower Combination Loop is our favorite! 

It’s listed as a mile, but you can easily extend it to around 2 miles. From the parking lot, take the trail on the right, going past the “Stone Tower Trail” sign and continuing east on the Stone Wall Trail.

This takes you on a rarely-traveled path around the Fort Mountain summit, with incredible views and massive boulders. 

It eventually connects to the West Overlook Trail, leading to an incredible overlook of the surrounding landscape. Retrace your steps and you’ll see signs leading to the 4-story CCC Stone Tower, which was built back in the 1930s.

9. Hike the Gahuti Mountain Trail

The longest of the hiking trails at Fort Mountain State Park, the Gahuti Mountain Trail is a moderate to strenuous 8-mile trek around the edge of the park.

It takes hikers through the forest just below the summits of two majestic  North Georgia mountains (Cohutta and Fort Mountain). 

The vast scenic landscapes provided by the Cool Springs Overlook and various other scenic viewpoints along the trail are excellent at any time of year, but especially so when the area’s fall colors peak.

The trail offers a good bit of boulders and elevation changes as it meanders through deep valleys, eventually crossing Goldmine Branch Creek and descending alongside its small, multi-tiered waterfalls . 

You could easily extend this hike by making a 2-mile detour to explore the Stone Wall, Overlook & Tower Trails. If you’re interested in an overnight hike, there are 4 backcountry campsites that are available by permit only.

10. Picnic at Harrison Park 

Located a short walking distance from downtown Ellijay, the 26-acre Harrison Park is situated along a lovely stretch of the Ellijay River. 

The historic Pinson Barn is evidence of the property’s past as farmland.

But Friends of Harrison Park, the City of Ellijay, and the A. E. Harrison Foundation have created a 10-year master plan to make this a hub for local community gatherings. 

The dog-friendly park currently features paved walking and running trails, riverside benches and picnic tables, and lots of open green space for events such as live music , the Scarecrow Invasion, and the Sasquatch Strut Fun Run.  

After the success of a recent fundraiser, future plans include building permanent stages for concerts, movies, and festivals, as well as improving the park’s infrastructure. 

In the meantime, it’s a great place for an afternoon picnic, sitting in the shade of massive old growth trees with the gentle-flowing river just a few steps away.

11. Sample the Best Ellijay Restaurants

As with North Georgia mountain towns such as  Blue Ridge and Clayton , Ellijay’s increasingly high profile as a tourist destination has created a booming bevy of great restaurants to choose from. <

Ellijay’s  best restaurants run the gamut from laid-back and casual to upscale foodie fare, with prices to suit every budget. But most of the places we’ve dined have been surprisingly affordable.

Our picks for the best restaurants in Ellijay GA include the inspired Asian fusion of The Shack of Ellijay , the sensational soups and sandwiches at Cantaberry Restaurant , and the Back Porch Bistro , and the intensely flavorful artisan pies at Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza .

If you visit Downtown Ellijay, make sure to save room for desserts from the Bavarian Chocolatier .

The owner, Michael Ferst, is from Bavarian Germany, and crafts exceptional homemade chocolate truffles, fudge (try the chocolate gingerbread !), dark chocolate peanut butter cups, buckeyes, pralines, and more.

12. Search for Sasquatch at the Expedition Bigfoot Museum

Located just 10 miles north of Ellijay in Blue Ridge GA , the Expedition Bigfoot Museum is an impressive, family-friendly roadside attraction.

The 4,000-square-foot museum was created by David and Malinda Bakara, who have assembled what is quite likely the world’s most expansive collection of Bigfoot exhibits, artifacts, and memorabilia.

Their entertaining Sasquatch museum includes documented Bigfoot encounters, haunting recordings of Bigfoot sounds, and Bigfoot videos that present a compelling argument that these mythical creatures of the forest might truly exist.

X-Files fans will also appreciate their artfully arranged exhibits on unexplained phenomena such as ETs, sea monsters, UFOs, etc. from their Adventure Outpost (formerly located in downtown Blue Ridge).

Make some time to check out their gift shop, which is filled with all sorts of fun Bigfoot souvenirs, from books and videos to stuffed animals, T-shirts, and tchotchkes.

13. See the Cascades of Tumbling Waters

Another one of our favorite places for hiking near Ellijay, the Tumbling Waters Trail begins at the Ridgeway Recreation Area at Carters Lake . 

From the well-marked trailhead at the parking lot (which also features a public boat ramp), the trail descends into a gorgeous forest that features colorful North GA  wildflowers in the Spring and gleams with vivid red, orange, and yellow leaves in Autumn.

The easy hiking trail is just over a mile, but there are several scenic stops along the way, including an overlook and a 150-foot long bridge that crosses over Tails Creek. 

The bridge leads to a perfect spot for seeing the beautiful cascades for which the trail is named up close. Calling it a waterfall would be overly generous, as the water never drops more than a few feet. 

Still, it’s a lovely little hike, not to mention a great place for an afternoon picnic with friends and family.

14.  Shop at Panorama Orchards & Farm Market

With origins dating back to the 1920s (and formerly known as Blue Ridge Mountain Orchards), this Ellijay mainstay became Panorama Orchards after farmer Joel Stembridge formed a partnership with his son Gene in 1965.

Today they grow 20+ different varieties of apples, including early season varietals like Ginger Gold, Detroid Red, Gala, and September Wonder, and late season offerings such as Cameo, Granny Smith, Mutsu, and Stayman Winesap.

They also grow a variety of other fruits (including strawberries and Georgia peaches) and vegetables, including an excellent array of pumpkins for carving and seasonal decor. 

Located right off Hwy 515 in Ellijay , the Panorama Farm Market makes a great stop on any North Georgia road trip.

They have everything from homemade fried pies and fudge to apple cider, baked apple pies and breads, and myriad jams and jellies. All are made from scratch in the market kitchens, using fresh fruit from the orchard!

15. Spend a Day at Carter’s Lake

As lifelong lake lovers, we always enjoy visiting beautiful lakes on our travels, and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia are blessed with more than their fair share. 

Located 12 miles from downtown Ellijay, the 3200-acre Carters Lake is a man-made reservoir fed by the Coosawattee River. It’s the deepest lake in Georgia (max depth 450 feet), formed by the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi.

Arguably among the best lakes in the North Georgia Mountains , Carters Lake boasts 62 miles of shoreline with no houses or commercial development. But there are 7 Carters Lake campgrounds offering myriad recreational activities.

Fishing, boating, water skiing , kayaking, and swimming (which is limited to the public beach area) are all popular pastimes in summer and early autumn.

But mountain biking and hiking the area’s trails are popular all year round.

Some of our favorite Carters Lake hiking trails include the lakeside Amahady Trail (3.6 miles), the kid-friendly Big Acorn Trail (0.6 miles), the scenic Oak Ridge Nature Trail (1.5 miles), and the Hidden Pond Songbird Trail (1 mile).

16. Stomp Grapes at Cartecay Vineyards’ Crush Festival

Once the fall colors begin to change, you can’t swing a stick in North Georgia without hitting some festival or another. 

But Cartecay Vineyards  hosts a unique event every September called the Crush Festival, which allows guests to tour the 14-acre property and stomp the farm’s freshly harvested grapes!

One of our favorite Ellijay wineries , Cartecay Vineyards was founded in 2007 and has been expanding gradually ever since their first growing season. 

Visitors to the Crush Festival can enjoy wine tastings in their refurbished barn (which has been on the property since 1890), and enjoy live music from a variety of local acts. 

Outside of the annual festival , the winery is open for tours every weekend and for tasting 7 days a week.

17. Tackle the Trails at Talking Rock Nature Reserve

Created in 2012 by the Southeastern Trust for Parks & Land , the Talking Rock Nature Reserve protects 220 acres of land located 12 miles south of downtown Ellijay.

The preserve features over 10 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Cyclists will love the 3-mile green trail loop, known as Jon’s Trail, which is smooth and flows well, with gentle, gradual climbs and descents.

The Pickens and Grinning trails are considered the prettiest for hiking, taking you through a lovely forest that’s dotted with lots of colorful wildflowers in spring and early summer.

There are lots of conservation projects at the preserve as, including environmental enhancements geared towards supporting pollinators and birds (such as bat and butterfly houses, native tree and shrub installations, apiaries, and more).

The STPAL has also been awarded grant funding to build 2 chimney swift towers and 4 environmental educational kiosks at the preserve in the near future.

18. Visit the Gilmer County Historical Society’s Tabor House Museum 

Run by the Gilmer County Historical Society , the Tabor House Museum is located in an 1870s Victorian-era reconstruction period home in the heart of historic Downtown Ellijay. 

Gilmer County was the location of the Lower Towns of the Cherokee Nation of Georgia up until the Treaty of New Echota led to Indian removal via the Trail of Tears in 1838.

The Tabor House (the oldest family home in the city of Ellijay) is now home to a museum of the area’s history, featuring artifacts dating from the Cherokee Indians and the early Appalachian pioneers to the Civil War and World War II. 

From arrowheads and examples of Cherokee clothing to Union and Confederate rifles, Victorian period antiques, and a room filled with military helmets and flight suits, it’s a fascinating place for anyone interested in the history of Ellijay GA.

19. Wine Tastings at Engelheim Vineyards

The climate and geology of Georgia’s Blue Ridge region provides the perfect conditions for growing grapes and producing wine.

But Georgia wineries didn’t start gaining national acclaim until fairly recently. 

Ellijay is home to some of the best wineries in North Georgia , many of which offer tasting rooms where visitors can sample the fruit of their vineyards while surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. 

Launched by the Engel family in 2009,  Engelheim Vineyards  is one of the most popular wineries in Ellijay, winning accolades such as 2018 Georgia Winery of the Year and the Best Georgia Wine in 2020 and 2021.

Their  award winning North Georgia wines include the Petite Manseng, a 100% Estate grown white wine with tangy notes of honey and melon, and the Red Blend Doxology, which mixes Petite Verdot, Syrah, and Zinfandel grapes.

Tastings are available 7 days a week from 12:30 pm to 6 pm, with live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. 

They offer a 4-wine flight board for $12, and you can taste their port-style dessert wines for an additional $3 each.

 20. Visit the Holla Yella Music Festival

Now in its second year, this annual music festival brings an eclectic assortment of national and regional music acts to the 51 acres of Ellijay’s  White Path Creek Farms .

Taking place the weekend of June 9-11, this year’s Holla Yella Festival lineup includes artists from diverse genres, including Americana, blues, bluegrass , indie rock, jam bands, and other forms of Appalachian roots music.

Though bands scheduled to appear at the 2023 festival are still TBD, last year’s lineup included Old Crow Medicine Show, the Infamous Stringdusters, Sierra Ferrell, Sierra Hull, Lera Lynn, and Strung Like A Horse. 

The Appalachian legend known as Saxsquatch also emerged from the forest to make a rare public appearance, hosting a late night dance party with his smooth, sax-y sound.

There was also a Caribbean Brunch, with live music by local artist Nero Simon & the Sunsetters.

The golf course is open to the public; however, keep an eye out for the local residents—wild turkeys—that may be crossing the greens before you tee off.

How To Spend A Perfect Weekend In The Apple Capital Of Georgia

One of the heavy hitters in the North Georgia small town scene is Ellijay, the Apple Capital of Georgia. Situated 75 minutes from Atlanta and 155 miles from Birmingham, Ellijay is spread out and chock full of agritourism. Visitors come here for the apple markets, you pick ’em farms, farm stalls, and impressive wineries and vineyards. I had the pleasure of staying in a romantic cabin in the woods and exploring the town’s broad landscape and sometimes rugged terrain and had a ball. Here is how to spend a perfect weekend in the Apple Capital of Georgia — Ellijay.

Things To Do In Ellijay

Whether you are coming for a girlfriend getaway, romantic weekend, family get-together, or solo day trip, you are sure to find a good time in this mountainous region bursting with activities. As I mentioned, Ellijay is very spread out, so be prepared to do some driving. Don’t worry; the scenery and attractions are fantastic.

Apple Markets

The country’s top apple-producing states are Washington, Michigan, and New York, but I think Georgia could give them a good run for their money. Apples are everywhere!

Apple Alley is an area that connects the apple houses of Ellijay in one straight line. There are so many of them, and each has a different vibe and unique features. Not only can you buy apples, but you can also pick them, and many have family-fun activities, such as B.J. Reece Orchards, with a petting farm, cow milking, scavenger hunt, pig races, wagon rides, and much more.

I visited R & A Orchards , Ellijay’s year-round market with a cafe, scads of fresh produce, the most apples I’ve ever seen in my life, and really great fried pies. While apple, peach, and cherry are popular choices, I loved the chocolate pecan and pumpkin cream cheese. Yum! 

Wine Tasting Rooms

Ellijay has nine wine tasting rooms and vineyards that are highly popular and super fun to visit. A perfect weekend in this town wouldn’t be complete without at least visiting one of them, but I recommend a tasting, even if you share it with a friend.

Cartecay Vineyards is in a refurbished circa 1890s tasting barn. Engelheim Vineyards is in a Bavarian-style tasting room. Ott Farms and Vineyard has live music on weekends, and Chateau Meichtry Family Vineyard & Winery is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and looks like the cover of a romance novel. The good news — the wines are enjoyable, vineyards friendly, and a great time for all. 

If you need suggestions for what to order, I liked Engelheim’s Doxology, a blend with flavors of cherry, spice, and black plum. A four-wine flight runs you $12. At Ott Farms, it was Capture, a petit syrah. Here, a five-wine tasting is only $10.

Local Shopping 

You will find some unique locally-owned shops in Ellijay, mainly around the historic downtown. One of the most popular is the Bavarian Chocolatier and Fudge Shop because when you walk in the door, you will absolutely be craving something sweet. I found several ladies’ apparel shops with excellent selections, and the Green Willow Soap shop definitely caught my attention. 

Be sure to pop into Main Street Antiques for a treasure trove that will easily take you down the rabbit hole. Live the Trail calls itself a modern-day general store, and I found cards, Christmas decorations, packaged foods, and playful socks that I couldn’t say no to. Downtown Ellijay also has several art galleries and shops.

Delicious Food 

I thoroughly enjoyed the tasty food on my Ellijay visit. There are a wide variety of restaurants (the best of which I write about below) with most of my favorites being downtown. You’ll find traditional dishes as well as some regional specialties and many ethnic choices. Gourmet products are abundant, too, in the apple markets, some tasting rooms, and many downtown shops.

Pro Tip: The restaurants in Ellijay are busy, so try to make a reservation, if possible, and practice patience while waiting for your table. 

Help The Animals 

We spotted Build An Ark Animal Rescue , a huge property littered with all different sorts of rescued animals, during our drive around Ellijay. This interactive farm is both an animal rescue and hospice sanctuary and is highly regarded by the locals. Admission is $7 per person, and they will give you food to share with the farm animals. Please note that the animal rescue is closed to the public for inclement weather.

There are 120 rescued animals on the farm ranging from horses, sheep, and goats to alpacas, pigs, and puppies. The animals are used for therapy at nursing homes and working with adults and children with special needs — what a fantastic mission.

Go Mountain Biking 

Ellijay is the Mountain Bike Capital of Georgia, and the mural outside of Cartecay Bike Shop proclaims it. While I am no mountain biker, there are apparently over 60 mountain bike trails, with the Cartecay Loop being one of the most popular. Enjoy the primitive, doubletrack, and singletrack trails in Ellijay’s scenic roads. 

Explore Mountain Valley Farm

This is one of the best agritourism offerings in Ellijay. Shoppers come to Mountain Valley Farm for grass-fed and free-range meats, farm-fresh eggs, locally made cheeses, handmade ice cream, and gourmet food products. Petting a few animals while I was there was the best part for me. Oh, and they have maple bacon ice cream — that’s a winning flavor!

Pro Tip: Many of these businesses are off the grid for cell service, or were to me. Pay attention to how you got there in case you can’t get your directions to work for the first part of the return trip. 

Best Restaurants In Ellijay 

Ellijay has some mighty good eats, and all for the sake of research, I tried many of them for you. Here are the details about my food experience, as well as what I really liked about each. 

Country Corner Kitchen

I heard about Country Corner Kitchen from locals in five different places, so I knew we had to go there. Country Corner Kitchen serves perfect southern biscuit breakfast sandwiches, traditional breakfast items, and even a Cuban breakfast sandwich. They also serve real Cuban coffee, a jewel in the North Georgia Mountains. We loved the friendly service, reasonable prices, and tasty food so much that we made it our daily breakfast stop. 

Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza 

Dinner is terrific from Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza , where the pie creations are part scrumptious and part genius. After researching menus online, this is one place I knew I had to try. Start your meal with the specialty fondue — oh, so good. Mine was artichoke, so gooey and creamy that I finished mopping it up with my pizza crust. And speaking of pizza, I’m sure you can’t go wrong with any of the choices, but I had the mild Italian sausage and peppadew pepper pizza. It was amazing, and I had enough leftovers the next day. 

The Roof 

The Roof is the only place in town where you can dine on a rooftop and capture such amazing scenic pictures. The service is attentive and professional, and the menu is very well curated. I couldn’t wait to try the Bologna Sliders (with truffle dijonnaise), a regional dish from The Roof that was exceptional in every bite. Then came the Shrimp and Grits, really well done and a perfect portion size. My husband had the recommended Rooftop Chicken Sandwich and loved it. You get your choice of any one side dish with it, too.

A perfect place for any meal of the day is Cantaberry , where my husband and I went for bowls of soup to beat the wintery weather. Cantaberry’s soup, salad, and sandwich combinations are plentiful, and the soup varieties change daily. I had the chicken wild rice and he chose tomato basil, plus half sandwiches. I can vouch for the really tasty tuna salad, and he had every bit as good chicken salad. Cantaberry also gives you several bread choices — a nice touch. 

Save room for a slice of the super tall layered cakes that also look divine. 

Cabins And Hotels In Ellijay

We passed the Ellijay River Bed and Breakfast and I immediately saved the location for a future trip. The beautiful luxury adults-only property is a 1915 Craftsman home with a superb riverside setting and is within walking distance to downtown. Free WiFi and southern breakfast are included in your stay. You can take your breakfast on the veranda, Magnolia deck, or riverside deck. Another appealing choice is the Coosawattee River Resort, with an indoor pool. There are four rooms to choose from, and the Magnolia Room has my name all over it. 

If you are traveling with your camper or RV, Diamond Lure Campground and RV Resort looks really appealing. The setting is beautiful, and this property really intrigued my husband, who still hasn’t stopped talking about it. 

For those just wanting a reasonably priced motel experience, Ellijay Inn can take care of all your needs.

Pro Tip: Downtown Ellijay has free parking and clean public restrooms.

Besides their outstanding wine, this winery also exudes a soothing and easy-going ambiance.

There’s also a tasting bar with scheduled live music.

Indulge in their delightful wines at the Tasting Bar, which feature a covered porch, a wood fire stove and a sitting area.

Likewise, you may relax at the Chimney Patio, and drink in the vineyard’s ambiance.

On weekends, visitors are treated to live music performances on the covered porch.

16. Veterans Memorial Bridge

The Veterans Memorial Bridge was created to commemorate the contributions of Gilmer County to the armed forces since WWI.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge is ideal for anyone who’s on the lookout for free things to do in Ellijay.

To me, it’s a beautiful memorial to the veterans and a nice spot to admire the river at night.

Cross the only pedestrian bridge spanning the Coosawattee River, and admire the stellar views.

If you want to sweat a bit, there’s a tranquil and clean walking trail running along the river.

Open on weekends, this market on Northside Square is the place to go for vintage finds and bargain goods.

Offering a rich variety of goods, this marketplace is a flea market, vender co-op and an auction house.

And, trust me, you’ll find tons of inexpensive items at this market.

Shop to your heart’s content without breaking the bank at this marketplace.

We love Ellijay for its vibrant events scene. There's always something happening in the charming town of Ellijay GA, from live music performances to food festivals to outdoor activities and many other events and activities.

One of the most popular events in Ellijay is the annual  Georgia Apple Festival . Held every fall, this festival celebrates the town's rich apple-growing heritage. Visitors can enjoy live music, arts and crafts vendors, and of course, plenty of delicious apple treats. If you're in town during the festival, be sure to check it out.

One popular destination is  Blue Ridge Georgia  which is just a short drive away. Blue Ridge offers a nice downtown, a scenic railroad (the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway), mountain views, outdoor activities, and restaurants.  

Enjoy shopping, dining, and exploring antique stores in the quaint downtown area. 

Dahlonega Georgia  

Dahlonega is a historic town located around 35 miles southwest of Ellijay.  Dahlonega GA  is widely known for its gold mining history, charming downtown area, and picturesque surroundings.

The town's gold rush heritage is celebrated in the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which is housed in the former Lumpkin County Courthouse. Visitors can explore exhibits that highlight the area's gold mining history and even try their hand at panning for gold.

There are a handful of great mountain cabins you can rent in McCaysville. A Tumblin Run which is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath sitting right on Fightingtown Creek. Where The Maps End is a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath cabin with an outdoor fire pit. Creek Bend Escape is a 2 bedroom, 3 bath that sleeps 6. You can even fish right out your back door.

Try Kenny’s Pizza and Subs . It’s an Italian, American restaurant. They have a nice variety of food to choose from. From burgers and fries, to calzones, wings and more. Make sure you get some of their cornbread.

Fairmount is about 28 miles from Ellijay and is just under a 40 minute drive.

Whether you’re looking for a mountain cabin, or an affordable hotel. You’ll find plenty of choices all within 15 miles of Fairmount. You’ll find over 25 hotels that are less than $100 a night. There are also mountain cabins that range from a 1 bedroom, 1 bath all the way up to a 6 bedroom, 4 bath. Most of them come with hot tubs.

Don’t miss the Tin Star BBQ Which is mentioned in the section about Oakland. Then there’s the Park Place Smoke House. It’s clean and welcoming with a country feel. Try the pulled pork plate with a couple sides. Then top it off with some peach cobbler and some ice cream. Fairmount also has a subway, if you want something quick and easy.

There’s not a lot to do in Fairmount. So what you can do is take a 30 minute drive over to Cartersville and check out the Tellus Science Museum . They have a mining exhibit, planetarium shows and gravity wells. Perfect for kids. You can bring your lunch, or eat at the cafe inside the museum. They also have an outdoor picnic area.

7: Dawsonville, Ga

Dawsonville is about 32 miles from Ellijay and is about a 45 minute drive.
