   Lana Hergert –  Local Female Vocal Phenom Still Spinning Webs with Widow’s for those about to Rock!

    Lana Hergert will take another little piece of your heart and make you feel good when the “Black Widow” performs for the crowd during “America’s Grape Country Craft Beverage Festival” on August 6 th , 1pm at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds in Dunkirk, New York. I can’t wait to find myself entangled in their web of music mastery and bitten by the razor-sharp precision of this award-winning and fiercely female vocal phenom.

      While the band “Black Widow” has been rocking the southern tier and beyond for more than three decades, Lana Marie Hergert, the acclaimed lead singer, has been the tour de force behind much of the band’s success. Having been crowned Buffalo Music Scene’s, “Best Female Rock Vocalist” multiple times and having led “Black Widow” to claim over 50 Buffalo Music Award titles, for 35 years Lana has been the constant thread weaving together the talents of this high-profile, much sought after and beloved musical group. For the last 15 years she has considered the current lineup of musician’s her family and they are as follows: Nino Catanzarro, formerly of the Outlaws, brings the beat of the Bass Guitar, while Joe Dehlinger bangs it out on the Drums and Dustin Francis makes the lead guitar sing. In addition to her recognition as a local Rock Diva, she and Anthony Cascuccio hit the European Charts as A&L, an original, acoustic recording duet with titles that hovered around tracks put out by today’s music legends, such as, Adel.

      This multi-talented and extremely versatile singer has the pipes to pump out hits from across the spectrum of genres and covering over four decades of chart-topping hits. From songs by the likes of Pat Benatar, Lady Gaga, Melissa Ethridge and one of Lana’s favorites, Janice Joplin; to the classic hits of: Steppenwolf, Journey, The Doors, Pink and so many more, Lana performs them all with authenticity and ease. When I asked Lana what she felt was the most important aspect to her performances, she answered without hesitation, connection. “If I couldn’t connect with the audience on the whole and with individuals who have come together to share in our experience as performers, there would be no purpose for my presence. I seek out those who may feel adrift to pull them in and assure them that they are not alone. Making people feel good about themselves while enabling them to forget about the stresses of life, is what motivates me to give 100% of what I’ve got each time I get behind the microphone. I absolutely love it when we bring someone out of the audience to sing or shake a tambourine with us on stage. They get to feel special, and they should because they are. We are all special in ways we don’t always recognize or see and when you have the opportunity to make another human being feel that it is really rewarding.”

   I queried of Lana if she remembered when she was first bitten by the music spider. She recalls singing solos from grade school through high school and always knowing it was her destiny to be behind the mic, but that it was not always easy. She remembers being chastised and told her body size was too large to sing lead by a few bands, but soon she began filling in with Black Widow and History is made.

     I am super excited to meet Lana Marie Hergert and the members of Black Widow on Sunday. I told her I would be the O.G. in hats, dancing like a fool while attempting to video their performance. I told her if she sees me on my knees in front of the bandstand, it is only so I can get the drummer in my lens. She chuckled and agreed to give me visual access and I am confident she will.

“ Black Widow is a metaphor for this innocent young girl who gets infected with life, traumas, experiences, and the balance of light and darkness,” explains Maria. “She becomes this poised and powerful creature. That’s the album.”

On November 17, In This Moment will unleash the latest chapter of their continuing musical saga entitled Black Widow . As with their last three studio albums, In This Moment turned to Kevin Churko to handle the production aspect on this new release. The band’s connection with Churko has undoubtedly helped to elevate the band’s creativity to an entirely different level with each sequential release. Black Widow is the follow-up to 2012’s highly successful album Blood , which clearly demonstrates the perpetual evolution of the band and their innate ability to think outside of the musical box in which many artists choose to confine themselves.

I felt as if I was taken on a journey while listening to Black Widow , with the central theme along the majority of the way being the quest of finding a way to the light through the darkness. The band continues its fusion of industrial and metal and pushes the envelope even further than they did on Blood . I’m going to come back to the four songs that have been made available for download already and those are “ Sex Metal Barbie ,” “ Big Bad Wolf ,” “ Bloody Creature Poster Girl ” and the first official single/video “ Sick Like Me .” But first…

The title track is catchy as hell with an infectious groove and riffs that would make even Rob Zombie jealous. “ Sexual Hallucination ” was one of the songs that I was most anxious to hear as it’s a duet with Brent Smith of Shinedown . The two bands toured together on the Uproar Festival in 2012 and the Carnival of Madness tour in 2013, forming a deep friendship and mutual respect for each other’s craft. That bond allowed for this amazingly sexy collaboration between the two artists and the band collectively, and is a true standout on the album.

In This Moment have dabbled a bit with ballads in the past and when they do, it’s a pretty powerful and emotional odyssey that you get taken upon. “ The Fighter ” is pure Maria Brink sitting at a piano – exposing her soul and accepting who she is, imperfections and all, just like all of us. The song grows with intensity as the entire band eventually joins in to build this amazing wall around Maria’s commanding vocal delivery.

I really liked the song “ Dirty Pretty ” which has a Manson-ish “ Beautiful People ” era vibe to it, but with a hook that’s just as infectious, if not even more so.

The album’s closer, “ Out of Hell ,” is another piano-driven ballad that’s going to pull on a lot of heartstrings and probably hit home with many listeners who have been in the exact same place in their lives.

As for the four songs mentioned earlier that have been released for download:  the lead-off single “ Sick Like Me ” is a unique hybrid which blends the reminiscent tone of early In This Moment with the latest sounds heard on Blood . Maria’s vocal delivery on “ Big Bad Wolf ” could be an ode to Mike Patton and old-school Faith No More . “ Sex Metal Barbie ” calls out all the haters and trolls who feel empowered to spew their venom as they sit behind a keyboard. “ Bloody Creature Poster Girl ” is a track that really shows the band pushing the musical envelope. If it doesn’t hook you immediately, then give it a couple of listens to let it sink in.

Black Widow  is a beautiful demonstration of the evolution of a band that refuses to remain complacent or create an album on which every song sounds exactly the same. Yes, they may have lost a few fans along the way who wanted In This Moment  to retain the Beautiful Tragedy – era sound and remain there, but this is a band that has been growing and evolving ever since that album was released. For those of us that have been there since the beginning, it’s been a true pleasure to see the creativity and exploration that has evolved, which has resulted in them gaining millions of fans worldwide.  Having said that, I will admit that some of the songs on Black Widow surprised even me; some hooked me immediately and others took a listen or two to be fully appreciated. And fully appreciate them I did, because if there’s one thing In This Moment is not – is predictable,  and quite frankly it’s refreshing to be surprised in this day of cookie-cutter music.

ALBUM REVIEW: BRICKS – Beasts Blood

Overall, it’s a solid album that showcases a band that continues to elevate its game as well as rise to the challenge of the doubters and haters. Will everyone enjoy it? Well, you would hope so, but there will always be haters. I just hope listeners will give it an honest listen and be open minded and they will probably be surprised with how much they like it.

I have been a metal fan all my life – some of my all time favorites , just to name few; WASP/ METTALICA /MEGA DEATH / IRON MAIDEN / ARCH ENEMY; and so just few weeks ago my buddy played for me something new I never heard before , listening to ITM “sick like me” then ” adrenaliize” followed by ” blood” FUCK ME!!! I have to be honest this music is unique and very honest to itself! it creates a stirring subjective confrontation to the very personal ego! Very explosive .The music / lyrics too is powerful and promising. Followed by the “whore” ” big bad wolf” ” dirty pretty” ” the fighter” ” out of hell” just sums up how unique and creative the band really is. ITM really creates the exciting truth, with a very sublime, avantgard approach creating and heading towards a new music era!

I agree with you. I think this album isn’t receiving as much credit as it should based on all its influences from bands in the late 90s. Be that is it may, for In This Moment, this is a very unique and empowering album. Songs like Sex Metal Barbie, Dirty Pretty and Out of Hell truly show Brink’s willingness to move above all the hardships and the haters. I think lyrically it’s incredibly beautiful. The best thing about ITM lyrics is that they always tell a story, arguably based on personal experiences. However, whether one likes the album is very subjective. This was a great review by the way 🙂

i gotta say great review man i wish more people were as open minded as you, i think it’s there most unique album i would have to say there really isn’t one song i don’t like on this album i think each song is a unique as the last, really don’t understand the hate, but to be honest I’m not much of a metal fan more of a rock guy and i love these guys

The record, the first for the band on Atlantic Records, picks up where the group's 2012 breakthrough, Blood, left off. That album saw In This Moment debut at #15 on the Billboard Top 200, their highest chart position to date, and eventually sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone. In This Moment Unveil New Album Details, New Single + Fall 2014 Tour Dates

In This Moment will release their fifth studio album, ‘Black Widow,’ on Nov. 18 via Atlantic Records. To celebrate the news, the band has unleashed the album’s first single, ‘Sick Like Me,’ which is posted above. The song features singer Maria Brink ’s soaring vocals shining over a heavy track that’s sure to get fans pumped up for the new album.

‘Black Widow’ was produced by the band’s longtime collaborator Kevin Churko, who is also known for his work with Five Finger Death Punch and Ozzy Osbourne . It will be available for pre-order at digital retailers starting on Oct. 7. The effort will be offered to fans in a variety of configurations including vinyl exclusively at Atlantic’s webstore . All pre-orders will receive four instant downloads prior to the release of the album, including the single ‘Sick Like Me.”

Frontwoman Maria Brink opened up about the band’s fifth album saying, “‘Black Widow' is definitely the darker part of me. This album is finding the weakness inside and turning it into strength. It's about being reborn, setting yourself free and realizing the balance in everything -- the dark and the light.” She adds, “I am so ready and excited for the launch of this album. I think people will embrace its diversity and hearing different sides of us that they haven't experienced yet.”

Guitarist Chris Howorth chimed as follows: “This was by far the most challenging, exciting and rewarding experience we've ever had making a record. We threw out the rulebook and tried to create something fearless, constantly pushing ourselves to make an album unlike anyone has heard before. Fans, get ready for this ride -- everything is going to the next level.”

In This Moment have also announced dates for their ‘Black Widow’ Tour with Twelve Foot Ninja and Starset . The outing kicks off on Oct. 26 in Reno, Nev., and wraps on Dec. 14 in San Diego, Calif. The Black Crowes have officially announced their return to the road with a headlining North American tour set to begin this September.

The news comes in the wake of Aerosmith’s decision to cancel their farewell tour due to frontman Steven Tyler’s larynx injury. The Black Crowes were originally scheduled to support Aerosmith on that tour, but with those plans now scrapped, the band is moving forward with their own tour, much to the delight of their fans.

Happiness Bastards marks the first new studio record from singer Chris Robinson and guitarist Rich Robinson in 15 years. The album follows the siblings’ reunion in 2019, where they performed over 150 shows across 20 countries to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough 1990 album Shake Your Money Maker .

In a statement upon the album’s release in March , Chris Robinson said, “ Happiness Bastards is our love letter to rock ‘n’ roll. Rich and I are always writing and creating music; that has never stopped for us, and it is always where we find harmony together. This record represents that.”

Brother Rich Robinson added, “This album is a continuation of our story as a band.
