Voiceplay was awesome! They we very interactive with the audience and they were funny! All of the songs they sang were on point! My wife is a huge fan of a capella groups and I was a bit skeptical to be honest, but Voiceplay totally blew me away! They even hung around after the show to sign autographs and take pictures with the fans! They are truly nice genuine guys and I’m glad we got to see them. We hope to see them again in the future!

VoicePlay is an a cappella group based out of Orlando, Florida . They formed in 1997. They have done eight national tours and competed on Season 4 of NBC's The Sing-Off . [1] They won Pop Group of the Year at the 2019 A Cappella Music Awards. [2] Their current lineup consists of Geoff Castellucci, Cesar De La Rosa, Eliezer "Eli" Jacobson, and Layne Stein.

History [ edit ]

4:2:five [ edit ].

In 1997, Mykal Kilgore (high tenor), Earl Elkins Jr. (tenor), Layne Stein (baritone), and Geoff Castellucci (bass), students at Lake Howell High School in Seminole County, Florida , formed an a cappella quartet. Scott Porter , also a Lake Howell student, joined the following year as vocal percussion . The quintet called themselves 4:2:Five. In 1999, Kilgore left the group to pursue his career on Broadway . James May joined that year as a tenor. [3]

On January 1, 2001, they released an EP. [4] The group gained more experience by performing around Orlando, including performances at Disney World , Universal Studios Orlando , and on cruise ships. [5]

On January 1, 2004, they released their first album, "Unstoppable". [6] On April 8th of that year, they released their second album, "Time Machine". [7]

VoicePlay [ edit ]

After multiple lineup changes, by 2011 the group consisted of Eli Jacobson (rock tenor), Tony Wakim (baritone), along with founding members Castellucci, Elkins, and Stein. [1] In 2012, the group changed their name to VoicePlay. Days later, on April 19th, they launched their YouTube channel. [8]

On July 10, 2012, VoicePlay released their third album, the Disney-themed "Once Upon an Ever After". [9] Later that year on November 6th, they released their first holiday album, "Peppermint Winter". [10]

The Sing-Off (2013) [ edit ]

VoicePlay's video mashup of the songs "I Knew You Were Trouble" by Taylor Swift and "As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber caught the attention of the producers at NBC's The Sing-Off , who requested that they audition for the show. However, as both songs featured singer and Broadway actress Rachel Potter , the producers wanted VoicePlay to audition with her as a group of six. Potter was unavailable to do The Sing-Off , so VoicePlay asked Honey Larochelle to compete with them. They finished fifth place. [1]

After their performances on The Sing-Off , VoicePlay went on two national tours with the show. Larochelle did not join VoicePlay on either tour and was replaced by Emoni Wilkins, who had competed in The Sing-Off Season 4 as part of the runner-up group, TEN . [11]

For the 2014 tour, VoicePlay was joined by Season 4 winners Home Free , The Filharmonic, who were eliminated in the sixth episode, and Street Corner Symphony , who were runner-ups of The Sing-Off's second season. [12] In 2015, VoicePlay's tourmates were Street Corner Symphony and The Exchange , runner-ups of Season 5.

In 2014, VoicePlay released their album "Collide" along with its deluxe edition with three additional tracks. Every song on "Collide" features another singer or group, most of whom VoicePlay had met through The Sing-Off . [13]

In 2016, Wakim left to form PattyCake Productions. [14] [15] The group temporarily performed as a quartet with guest singers.

YouTube [ edit ]

On August 18, 2017, VoicePlay posted their music video "Moana Medley" featuring Rachel Potter. It became their most popular video, with 42 million views. On November 1st that year, they released their second holiday album, "Warm Up". [16]

In March 2018, VoicePlay introduced J.None (baritone/tenor) as their newest official member. That year, the group toured the Philippines with Potter. [17]

VoicePlay again went viral in October 2019 with their music video "Oogie Boogie's Song", earning 11 million views on YouTube. It featured the previously little-known vocal technique of subharmonic singing , with Castellucci ending the song on an E 1 .

In May 2020 VoicePlay created their largest collaboration to date with their cover of the song "Just Sing" from Trolls World Tour , which they created as a fundraiser for MusiCares during the COVID-19 pandemic . The video has received over 2.3 million views and raised $170,000.

In July 2020, Elkins left the group for personal reasons. In June 2021, J.None left to serve a five-year tour in the United States Navy . Two weeks later, VoicePlay announced Cesar De La Rosa (baritone/tenor) as their newest official member. On October 3, 2021, VoicePlay opened for Genshin Impact 's celebratory first anniversary concert, "Melodies of an Endless Journey". [18]

Between 2021 and 2023, they produced numerous music videos that trended on YouTube featuring guest artists:

  • "Hoist the Colours feat. Jose Rosario Jr." (2021, 3.7 million views)
  • "The Dragonborn Comes feat. Omar Cardona" (2022, 2.1 million views)
  • "We Don't Talk About Bruno feat. Ashley Diane" (2022, 4.6 million views)
  • "Enemy feat. AleXa " (2022, 1.3 million views)
  • "Nothing Else Matters feat. J.None" (2023, 1.3 million views)
  • "Valhalla Calling feat. J.None" (2023, 1.3 million views)

Collaborations [ edit ]

VoicePlay frequently collaborates with other artists. In 2013, they teamed up with fellow The Sing-off group and Season 4 winners, Home Free , for "Zombies vs. Hillbillies - Survivor". In 2016, they headlined a concert at Camp A Cappella and later joined a children's choir from the academy for "Don't Stop Believin'".

On November 2, 2016, they were featured on Kurt Hugo Schneider 's "TWENTY ØNE PILØTS MASHUP!! - ACAPELLA feat. VoicePlay". [19] On January 17, 2017, AJ Rafael featured VoicePlay on his YouTube channel with an a cappella version of Seasons of Love from Rent . [20] In 2018, Schneider again featured VoicePlay in " Waving Through a Window - Dear Evan Hansen " on his album "Kurt & Company Vol 6". [21]

In 2022, K-pop star AleXa approached the group about a collaboration on " Enemy " by Imagine Dragons with her cosplaying as Jinx from Arcane: League of Legends . She filmed her scenes from South Korea ; then the group digitally added her in and matched her choreography.

For their 2022 Halloween video, they collaborated with Lauren Paley ("The Stairwell Siren") on her viral TikTok rendition of "Hide and Seek (Ding Dong!)". After Castellucci did a podcast interview with Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice regarding his basso profondo range, Zharoff provided ghostly background vocals for "Hide and Seek". [22] [23]

Their largest collaboration was "Just Sing" with 19 guest singers, included notable performers such as Friday Night Lights star and former VoicePlay member Scott Porter , Home Free bass singer Tim Foust , Broadway actress Rachel Potter , and Rockapella vocal percussionist Jeff Thacher .

Awards and Reception [ edit ]

In 2000, they were named "Best Pop Group" in Ed McMahon 's Next Big Star contest. [24] In 2001, they won a regional contest in the Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival and went on to compete at the national level. [3]

In 2019, they won Pop Group of the Year at the A Cappella Music Awards. [2] After the viral success of "Oogie Boogie's Song", VoicePlay were Shorty Awards finalists for Best YouTube Musician of the Year. [25]

On July 10, 2021, VoicePlay's YouTube channel received the Gold Play Button . [8]

With currently 1.28 million subscribers, they are the third most popular American a cappella group on YouTube behind Pentatonix (20 million) and Home Free (1.65 million). Castellucci's use of subharmonic singing, able to reach B 0 , makes him one of the few oktavist a cappella singers in pop culture, alongside Tim Foust of Home Free and Avi Kaplan , formerly of Pentatonix.

Why Don't We Announce Hiatus and Cancel Upcoming Tour Amid Ongoing Legal Battle With Their Former Management

"All we ever want to do in our careers is make great music and perform for all you lovely people," the band wrote in a statement to fans.

It's official: Why Don't We is going on hiatus amid an ongoing legal battle to emancipate themselves from their former management company, Signature Entertainment. The band made the announcement on social media after receiving a cease and desist letter from Signature, which claimed that they aren't legally allowed to accept a deal "with any promoter or venue" for their Good Times Only Tour with The Aces and JVKE. As a result, the tour has been canceled.

"Due to unforeseen circumstances related to our ongoing legal battle to emancipate ourselves from the production company we signed with when we started our Why Don't We journey, we regretfully have to cancel our 2022 Good Times Only Tour," the band wrote in a statement posted to Twitter on July 3, 2022.

"All we ever want to do in our careers is make great music and perform for all you lovely people," they continued. "In light of this announcement, Why Don't We is officially going on hiatus." The band — consisting of members Jack Avery, Corbyn Besson, Zach Herron, Jonah Marais, and Daniel Seavey — closed off the statement by thanking their fans for their support over the years.

In September 2021, Why Don't We opened up about the alleged "mental, emotional, and financial abuse" they faced with their former manager, David Loeffler, without dropping his name.

"He would not only live with us during the day, but controlled us 24/7, setting an alarm that would go off if any door or window was opened," Why Don't We wrote in their September 2021 statement. They also claimed that they were "verbally berated" and alienated from their friends and families while signed to their former management. The band also revealed that some members developed eating disorders as a result of management restricting the amount of food they ate.

Following their announcement on July 3, Why Don't We has reassured fans that they will be automatically refunded for their concert tickets.
