To-Do List Before Your Day Trip From Key West To Cuba

No matter how you choose to travel, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your day trip to Cuba.

Money In Cuba

Cuba has a closed economy, so you need to know about money in Cuba before you go. The Cuban currency is the Cuban peso, also called CUP, and Moneda Nacional. You can only get this currency when in Cuba, not outside.

There are ATMs where you can withdraw cash, and some restaurants and shops accept credit cards, but most places don’t. Also, remember that US credit cards are not accepted in Cuba.

Be sure to bring enough cash, preferably in euros, dollars, or Canadian dollars, to cover whatever you intend to spend. Most Cubans prefer to be paid in foreign currency, for a variety of reasons.

Currently, you can use the US dollar, although formally, it was rendered illegal after a change of law in Cuba in the summer of 2021.

As the dollar is still flooding the informal currency market, the government decided to create an amnesty for the dollar, and because of this, you can still pay most places with the US dollar in cash.

Take it from a Scandinavian who has traveled regularly to Havana for five years; here are the best things to prioritize in Havana when you have only one day.

I assume your flight from Key West takes off super early in the morning, so you have the entire day to spend in Cuba’s iconic capital.

  • Walking tour of the old town: Old Havana
  • Classic American Old Car tour of the wider vibrant city of Havana
  • Have lunch at El Dandy or Km Zero
  • Walk the Prado Avenue and get some artsy memorabilia
  • Cocktail at Floridita, a favorite hangout for Ernest Hemingway
  • Take a break on the Malecon and have a Cristal Cerveza
  • Casa de la Musica Havana or Salsa Havana are two of the best places to shake your dancing feet to live music (if you are allowed to stay out late)

American Tourists Visiting Cuba

Because of the travel restrictions, most United States visitors’ travel reason is to “help the Cuban people”, and not as “tourists”.

There is no paperwork connected to this; you just need to state your reason if anyone asks.

Make sure you are familiar with the 11 pre-approved reasons for US citizens to visit Cuba .

As an American citizen, you will still need to buy the pink tourist card before entering the country, as opposed to the green one that the rest of the world is using.

If you plan on staying for a few days at a hotel or casa particular in Cuba, you also need to make sure it is not on the US restricted list . Most are not, so don’t worry, but it is smart to check before you make your booking.

Remember that Cuba is a (mostly) cash-only economy and that the US dollar was formally banned in Cuba.

However, as there are plenty of dollars in circulation on the black currency market, the Cuban government has issued an amnesty to change US dollars in the banks.

Therefore, you can still use dollars in cash in Cuba now.

Be sure to bring enough cash to cover whatever you plan on doing, and again, remember that US credit cards can not be used in Cuban ATMs or anywhere else due to the ongoing sanctions.

Lastly, be respectful of the Cuban people and culture. Cuba is a wonderful place to visit, with lots of natural beauty and historic sites, and I hope you enjoy your day trip!

A Stop in Key West

The southernmost point in the United States, Key West is beloved by visitors and residents for its vibrant street life. You can also experience colorful chapters of Cuban and American history here. This morning, we’ll explore all of this on a narrated Trolley Tour and a visit to the San Carlos Institute. Founded by Cuban exiles in 1871, and fondly dubbed La Casa Cuba by Jose Marti, the Institute helped to unite the exile community in the fight for Cuba’s independence from Spain. After lunch the afternoon is free to enjoy as you wish. Duval Street is famous for its bars, cafes and shops. It’s a great place to stroll at your own pace. Hemingway fans may want to stop by Sloppy Joe’s, one of the author’s favorite hangouts. The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum is another option. It’s located at 907 Whitehead Street in the heart of Old Town Key West. Step back in time and tour the rooms and gardens that witnessed the most prolific 10-year period in his writing career.  Meals B+L+D

Discover Old Havana

Havana was founded in 1519 and within a hundred years it had emerged as one of the Caribbean’s wealthiest ports and an important ship-building center. Although it’s now a vibrant city with more than two million residents, its historical core still retains a wonderful mix of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Focusing today on Old Havana  c , our guided tour takes us along the city’s cobblestone streets and through its four main town squares – each with its own distinctive charm and fine Colonial-era landmarks. We’ll also drive along the waterfront Malecón, past the University of Havana and through Vedado – an upscale district where classic, mid-century Havana chic has been seemingly frozen in time. After lunch, we’ll be treated to a private rehearsal with MALPASO - followed by a chance to meet with the talented performers of this independent dance company. We’ll end our guided sightseeing at the lively San Jose Craft Market; it’s one of the best places in the city to shop for Cuban art and handicrafts and offers a chance to engage with the friendly local artisans and merchants. After dinner we’ll go ashore to experience a bit of Havana nightlife as it was in the 1950’s! The city is rich with music history and no group is more famous than the Buena Vista Social Club. In the atmospheric Salón Rojo at the landmark Capri Hotel, we’ll join the living legends of the Social Club for an unforgettable concert.  Meals B+L+D

A Leisurely Day at Sea

This relaxing day is enriched by talks with our shipboard experts; delving into a wide variety of topics from politics and the arts to the continually evolving relationship between our two nations, our shipboard program will enrich your cruise. Fine dining, our Open Bar and the congenial camaraderie of your fellow travelers enhance this day at sea. Meals B+L+D

On our way to Trinidad

Enjoy another delightful day of cruising as we sail along the island’s southern shores toward our second port of call. Enriching talks with our shipboard Cuba experts continue along with wonderful meals and our Open Bar.  Meals B+L+D

Our First Day in Colonial Trinidad

After breakfast we’ll journey into the Valley de los Ingenios  c , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers insight into the history of Cuba’s sugar cane industry. At the San Isidro de los Destiladeros Archaeological Site, dating back to the pre-industrial age, we’ll see the original hacienda, a 3-story bell tower and slave quarters. Erected in 1750, the graceful majesty of the 7-story Manaca Iznaga Tower belies its original purpose to observe and control the slaves toiling away in the surrounding sugar cane fields. Today, an ascent to the top reveals the Valley’s pastoral and timeless beauty. Next we’ll meet with the skilled artisans of the generations-old Santander Family Pottery Studio whose works adorn Trinidad’s historic town square. Over lunch at a local paladar, we’ll have a chance to engage with the owner and staff of this privately owned restaurant. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a walking tour through the Colonial heart of Trinidad  c . Cited by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the town’s historic buildings include the Palacio Brunet and the Palacio Cantero, built with wealth from the region’s lucrative sugar trade. Our guide will also introduce us to the life and works of Yudit Vidal Faife, a local painter who has exhibited her works throughout Cuba and Europe. We’ll also visit the gallery and workshop of Lazaro Niebla Castro, a wood carver of rare skill, vision and passion.  Meals B+L+D

Another Day in Trinidad

Trinidad’s allure is to be experienced not just in the wealth of its city landmarks which we explored yesterday, but also in its delightful setting against the Escambray Mountains. This morning, we’ll journey into these mountain landscapes for a People-to-People experience at a coffee farm. We’ll observe firsthand the traditional techniques behind the high quality of Cuban coffee and learn about the work and life of the farmers. Again at lunch today, we’ll have a chance to engage in casual conversation with the owner and staff of another privately-owned paladar. Before returning to ship, we’ll also stop at a handicraft market where you can engage with the artisans and vendors as you browse and shop for gifts and souvenirs.  Meals B+L+D

Ashore in Cienfuegos

This morning, our exploration into the life and traditions of the Cuban people continues at a farmers market. See the variety of local fruits and vegetables for sale and experience an authentic slice of island life. Then we’ll tour Cienfuegos  c , recognized by UNESCO for its rich architectural diversity, which we’ll explore first in Punta Gorda. Driving along this thin slice of land that extends into the bay, we’ll discover a fine collection of early 20th-century palaces – many built by wealthy Americans during the Batista regime. Back in the center of town, we’ll enjoy a walking tour through the finely preserved Colonial district. After lunch onboard, we’ll return ashore for more People-to-People activities: Our first stop is at UNEAC, an organization of Cuban writers and artists. We’ll meet with its director to learn how the center is helping its members to follow their talents and passions. UNEAC Members even include school-age children, and we’ll be treated to a performance by these young musicians. Then we’ll explore the neighborhood, stopping into galleries and studios to engage with the artists.

A Second Day in the Pearl of the South

Cienfuegos has been described by many as Cuba’s most captivating town. It’s physically handsome and also bestowed with elegance and flair. Culturally and artistically, it’s also one of the most vibrant in Cuba. Our second day here begins outside of town with a guided tour of the Cienfuegos Botanical Garden, established in 1899 by a New Englander named Edward Atkins. We’ll have lunch onboard and then return ashore to spend time at the Tomás Terry Theater, a city landmark easily recognized by its colonnaded entry and the gold-leafed mosaics that adorn its façade. Built in the late 1800’s to honor a South American industrialist, the interior of this 950-seat theater is equally impressive. As part of our people-to-people programming, our visit is highlighted by an exclusive performance by one of Cienfuegos’ finest music ensembles.  Meals B+L+D

A Day at Sea

Enjoy another day of cruising as we chart a eastward course along Cuba’s southern coast. Enriching talks from our experts continue along with the convivial camaraderie of your fellow passengers – all enhanced by wonderful meals and our Open Bar.  Meals B+L+D

Santiago de Cuba + San Pedro de la Roca

Fidel Castro launched the Cuban Revolution in Santiago in 1953 and declared victory here six years later. But the town’s importance goes back hundreds of years earlier to its days as a center of Spanish Colonial power. Starting with these earliest days, we’ll tour the 16th-century mansion of Diego Velázquez, the Spanish Conquistador who served as the first Governor of the island. It’s now a fine museum filled with period furnishings. We’ll have lunch at El Morro, set on a seaside bluff with spectacular views. Nearby is one of Cuba’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca c . Built by the Spanish in the 17th century, this massive stone fortress is spectacularly set on a rocky promontory overlooking Santiago de Cuba Bay; it is widely recognized as one of the best examples of Colonial military architecture in the Americas. Before returning to ship, we’ll spend time at Casa del Caribe , founded 35 years ago to preserve Caribbean culture. Spending time with the Casa’s members offers a chance to learn about their spiritual beliefs and daily life.  Meals B+L+D

History + Culture in Santiago de Cuba

Our first sightseeing stop this morning will be at Santa Ifigenia Cemetery. Home to impressive burial crypts and mausoleums, this is a great place to learn about the historical figures buried here including the Cuban national hero José Martí. Our tour will be timed to coincide with the Changing of the Guard – a moving spectacle of pomp and ceremony! We’ll also enjoy a performance by Ballet Folklórico Cutumba. Blending African, European, Haitian and Cuban styles, this company has performed around the world. After the performance, we’ll have time to meet with the dancers. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Revolution Square, a park-like plaza dominated by a monumental bronze statue of Lt. General Antonio Maceo astride a rearing stallion. At the Moncada Barracks, we’ll learn about the events that unfolded here on July 26, 1953 when the 26-year-old Fidel Castro set out with 122 followers to attack the military barracks.  Meals B+L+D

Day trips to havana – experiencing a day trip to cuba has never been easier.

DAY TRIPS TO HAVANA – Experiencing a day trip to Cuba has never been easier - A group of people posing for the camera - Varadero

It was only a few short years ago that Americans had to lumber through layers of red tape to visit Cuba — even as Havana acted as the closest major city to Key West (only 90 miles from the Southernmost Point). And while the lure of Cuba’s rich history, rums, cigars and nightlife were only minutes away, Cuba became the elusive holiday destination for almost everyone other than U.S. citizens.   That was … until now.

Robin Smith-Martin, who began his upscale concierge service (OKW or Our Key West) over a year ago, now offers weekly trips to Cuba for tourists and local residents in the Keys. OKW, which partners with Air Key West, provides day trips to Havana that allow visitors to spend the day in Havana with the ability to return to Key West “in time for your dinner reservation.”

“Havana is our sister city,” said Smith-Martin. “People forget that Key West was Spanish before it became part of America and I hope we can continue and improve the dialogue between our two cities.”

Although OKW plans to expand into a series of themed day trips in the fall, the current expedition is a “Hemingway Excursion.” According to Smith-Martin, Hemingway embodies the symbol of the relationship between Key West and Havana.

“The Hemingway Excursion, or experience, allows our guests to explore [Hemingway’s] relationship between Key West and Cuba,” said Smith-Martin. “We all know about Hemingway’s impact and life in Key West, but much of his day-to-day life and writing occurred while he was in Cuba.”

Four to nine guests are invited on the bi-weekly day trip, with a 50-minute flight from Key West to Cuba that departs at 8 a.m. And by 9:30 a.m., the excursion to Hemingway’s home (about 30 minutes outside of Havana) is underway. From there, participants can enjoy rum, lunch and other cultural interactions in and around Havana—returning to Key West by 7 p.m.

The costs of the trips vary, but at the time of our interview Smith-Martin said the average price is affordable for the Key West traveler, which includes airfare, travel visa, tax, fees, guide-service, lunch and a stop for rum.   And for those fretting over the hassle of obtaining a visa, Smith-Martin says the typical turnaround time is about two business days.

“We like to remind people they still need their passports,” said Smith-Martin. “But the visa process is typically smooth. We just ask people to contact us a few days in advance to be safe.”

BREAKING: GRAND JURY BLASTS COUNTY LEADERS IN DRUG THEFT SCANDAL

Like most Key West based businesses, Smith-Martin says that interested locals should take advantage of the Hemingway Experience in the summer months to avoid heavy bookings. However, OKW also plans to expand their air service and themed day trips this fall.

“We are planning to launch a series next fall around Cuban history, art and culture,” said Smith-Martin. “And we also hope to provide regular flight service to Cuba, which will include the visa.”

No Key West to Cuba trip would be complete without spending at least a day in Havana. Once a playground for the rich and famous, Hollywood starlets and business tycoons were found here nightly, gambling in casinos and taking in a show at the world-famous Tropicana Nightclub. Havana in the 1950s was an “anything goes” town of fame and occasional infamy. Today the high life has disappeared, old-world charm lingers.

Stroll the streets of Old Havana and you’ll feel a mixture of cultural influences that are uniquely Cuban, from the conservative architecture of a Spanish cathedral to plazas lined with brightly colored building facades. Stop along the way and sample some of the city’s famous street food, including Tostones—deep-fried plantains served with a variety of dipping sauces.

Any walk through Old Havana is sure to pass under clotheslines strung between apartment buildings and have an encounter with at least one vintage 1950s-era Ford or Chevy automobile, still in operational condition and often used as taxis.

The Richness Of Cuban Culture

In Cuba, music feels like it’s a religion of its own, as sacred and loved. Some of the finest musicians you’ll ever hear can be found playing in places like Plaza Vieja and Plaza de Armas. So do what the locals do: sit, enjoy a cup of Cuban coffee, and partake in a little people watching.

Whether you travel from Key West to Cuba on a Hemingway excursion, fishing expedition, or simply to tour and experience a magnificent jewel of the Caribbean, you’ll discover Cuban citizens to be welcoming and engaging. 15 Best Day Trips from Key West

Florida’s most famous key has long been a popular holiday destination, among both visitors from across the pond and Americans in search of a relaxing spot.

The island city has a lot to offer despite its small size; it has some of the best snorkelling in the US right off shore, as well as plentiful water sport options for the adventurous spirits.

Once the home of Hemingway, there are also many interesting cultural attractions available – with the six-toed cats of Hemingway’s Home and Museum a clear highlight.

There’s also a buzzing strip along Duval Street, with plentiful bars and restaurants to keep visitors entertained at a new spot every night.

The picturesque conch houses along the waterfront form a great background for a relaxed boulevard stroll.

With all this on offer, you may still get itchy feet and fancy a trip further afield, so here are 15 of the best day trips from Key West.

South Beach, Miami Beach. Florida

It’s hardly possible to spend time in the sunshine state without at least a short trip to Miami – its glamorous poster child.

Skyscrapers crowd the shore, with a stretch of golden sand lining the front.

It’s got the best party atmosphere in Florida and a jam-packed center filled with restaurants and bars, while the option to hang out front and kick back on a sun lounger is always a tempting alternative.

It’s a bit of a trek from Key West, but well worth the effort for a guaranteed fun day – or crazy night – out.

2. Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Key West isn’t known for its beaches but Fort Lauderdale certainly is, and that’s just one of the appeals of this day trip.

Water-based activities are the clear winner here, with options on offer including gondola rides along the canal, amphibious tours, and a host of boat trips away from the harbour.

If you would rather stay dry, there’s plenty to keep you entertained on land, not least the excellent shopping district.

There’s also Millionaire’s Row houses and yachts to be ogled at, and a historic district to stroll through.

You definitely won’t be bored.

3. Fort Jefferson & Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park

A sure highlight of any Key West trip is a day spent in the spectacular Dry Tortugas National Park, with the unrivalled snorkelling on offer.

Hop on a high-speed ferry and travel the seventy miles to the park – you’ll get lunch included on the trip.

Azure water and clean white sand make the perfect backdrop for wildlife spotting – just make sure you remember your sun screen.

Once your fingers are wrinkled from too much time spent in the water, dry off for a tour of the historic Fort Jefferson, which is an intriguing site in itself.

4. Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park

For an unusual state park visit, Bahia Honda is a great option.

Located at the end of the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, it’s right on the beach with the Historic Overseas Railroad crumbling away above it – leaving you with a sense of times past as you stroll along the sand.

Head up onto the railroad bridge for some stunning vistas of the sea, which surely make it a contender for the most beautiful spot along the Florida Keys.

There’s yet more snorkelling on offer if you head over to the National Marine Sanctuary and Looe Key, if you’ve not yet had your fill.

5. Offshore water sports trip

Key West Catamaran

Boat trips abound from Key West – enclosed by water as it is – and these can make for some great family-friendly day trip options.

One of the most popular is an adventure boating trip, in which you step aboard a catamaran for an activity filled day at sea.

Snorkelling provides the first stopping off point – no surprises there – but after that you can head out to another spot for some exciting water exploration via jet ski, parasail and kayak.

The kids will love the inflatable adventure theme park tethered out in the water, often saved for last.

Food is usually included, and if you’re lucky, the drinks are unlimited at the end of the day.

Some suggested tours :

  • Key West Double Dip: 2-Stop Reef Snorkeling Trip
  • Key West: Ultimate Watersports Adventure Tour
  • Key West: Parasailing Flights

6. Ramrod Key

Ramrod Key, Florida

There are so many more keys than just Key West.

At Ramrod Key you can have a perfectly tranquil day with some relaxed entertainment, eating excellent fresh seafood fare and taking part in some slightly more chilled out activities.

Miniature Golf is a great choice for this.

The course at Mile Marker 27 has 18 holes and elaborately constructed obstacles, and is a great way to keep the kids occupied.

Once you’ve finished the round, hopefully without too many arguments, head out on a drive in search of some seafood.

You won’t have to look far, that’s for sure.

Scallops, lobster tail, grouper – the options are almost unlimited, and of course, they’ll be freshly caught.

7. Little Palm Island

Little Palm Island

If you’re feeling the need for a little luxury in your life, Little Palm Island is the place for you.

This private island resort is just five acres in size – leaving you feeling like kings and queens in a tiny kingdom – and it has a path running its full diameter.

Spend some time with your significant other dining on the luxury fare, perhaps with a glass of sparkling champagne to accompany it, looking out across the water.

To get here it’s just a brief ferry ride, departing every half hour from Little Torch Key at Mile Marker 28.

8. Turtle Hospital

Turtle Hospital, Florida

For animal lovers, a visit to the Turtle Hospital at Mile Marker 48 is a must-do.

It’s an educational centre, so visitors can learn about the process of rescuing ill or injured sea turtles, nursing them back to health, and eventually releasing them back into their natural habitat.

Tours depart every hour, in which visitors can learn more about rehabilitation and get the chance to view the area in which the work is carried out.

9. Fishing Charter

Fishing Charter, Key West

If adventure sports aren’t your thing, another type of boating day trip option is available – hiring out a fishing charter for the day.

Group tours are a much more budget-friendly option than private charters, and still give you that sense of excitement.

Serving the dual purpose of day-time entertainment and night-time dining, the boats from Key West are perfectly set up to make life easy for visitors, while allowing them the autonomy to take charge of their own catch.

You can even take your spoils to a local restaurant to have it served up to you for dinner.

10. Everglades national park

Everglades National Park

Florida’s Everglades are a unique natural habitat, home to alligators, manatees and dolphins – a real melange that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot a Florida panther skulking around.

There are lots of options here for exploring, from hiking to air boating, but the best views can be had from the 45-foot-high observation tower in Shark Valley.

11. Key Largo

Key Largo, Diving

Key Largo has been referred to as the diving capital of the world, and if that’s not enough to tempt a visit, then perhaps the famous beach bar at Alabama Jack’s will be more up your alley.

Hang out among the locals and grab a platter of fritters and an ice-cold beer to while away the afternoon.

If you do decide to check out the water options around, head over to the Pennekamp Coral Reef Park, east of the Key.

Havana, Cuba

If you feel like venturing further afield and having a real adventure, it might surprise you to learn that Cuba’s capital is within reach of Key West.

It’s a pricey option, but a short flight and you could tick a real bucket list day trip off the list.

Spend the day exploring a whole other culture, wandering the charmingly picturesque streets and snapping the inevitable pictures of those adorably old-fashioned cars trundling around.

Seek out some Cuban cigars, sip on Havana Club rum, and arrive back at the Key in time for dinner.

13. Islamorada

Islamorada

Feeding the fish might sound like a bit of a tame thing to spend your day doing, but you should definitely think again when it comes to feeding the wild tarpon in Islamorada.

Buckets of bait are on sale around the docks, so grab some and get ready for a real experience, as the massive fish loom out of the water to take the food from your hand.

They do have teeth, but it won’t hurt – though they may make you jump.

These monsters can grow up to eight-feet long and as heavy as 200 pounds.

14. Marathon Key

Marathon Key

For those who don’t feel like venturing too far from home, Marathon Key is a chilled option for a mild change of scenery from Key West.

Simply spend the day kicking back and hanging out on the water, grab a few beers, and watch the sun set over the sea.

There are some great resorts, restaurants, and bars around to perk up the day.

And best of all, Key West is only a short hop away, so you can be relaxed about the time you’re spending there.

15. Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne

Sitting 20-miles out in the Straits, Key Biscayne is the biggest must-visit for keen fishermen and women, with an incredible range of catches on offer.

There are some excellent tours available, as fishing is the lifeblood of the community.
