Thank You for Being a Friend by Andrew Gold

travel down the road and back again

  • Thank you for being a friend Traveled down a road and back again Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant I'm not ashamed to say I hope it always will stay this way My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow And if you threw a party Invited everyone you knew Well, you would see the biggest gift would be from me And the card attached would say Thank you for being a friend Thank you for being a friend Thank you for being a friend Thank you for being a friend If it's a car you lack I'd surely buy you a Cadillac Whatever you need, any time of the day or night I'm not ashamed to say I hope it always will stay this way My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow And when we both get older With walking canes and hair of gray Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear I will stand real close and say Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Let me tell you 'bout a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) And when we die and float away Into the night, the Milky Way You'll hear me call as we ascend I'll see you there, then once again Thank you for being a Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend People, let me tell you 'bout a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you) Thank you for being a friend Whoa, tell you 'bout a friend (let me thank you right now for being a friend) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna tell you 'bout a pal and I'll tell you again) Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you, thank you) Thank you for being a friend Writer/s: Andrew M Gold Publisher: Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd., Warner Chappell Music, Inc. • Ker from Pa I'm a historian who was born in 1965 - I grew up in the '70s. They weren't depressing. Every era has bad things happen and good things happen. I can't tell you one era of human existence that's left any kind of record of the civilization, that hasn't had good and bad times. That's the crux of human existence. Want to have some happy music from the '70s pointed out for you? Here is a tiny little list from thousands of acts and/or songs I could possibly mention. KC & the Sunshine Band. I still listen to it. AC/DC became an international sensation in the 1970s - I've been listening to them since 1979, even their songs about the death of their lead singer are fun, hard rocking hits. KISS - big in the '70s, to an adolescent like me at the time their rock was sexy - in fact, I still think it is. Led Zeppelin - one of the most awesome rock bands ever, never depressing. "What I Like About You" by the Romantics, one of the happiest songs ever, was written in 1979. The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire - I can name most of Motown that transitioned from '60s R&B to '70s funk easily - none of it depressing. Disco in and of itself was the opposite of depressing, and it's the very essence of the 1970s. Vietnam ended in 1974; not even halfway through the decade. Most of the political upheaval of the late 20th century in US History happened in the 1960s, not the '70s. The '70s were the cool-down, get-down, party-down time. THAT'S how I remember the '70s. Most of the music we now classify as "Classic Rock" is from the 1970s. Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, The Who -- my goodness, I could spend all night naming 1970s music that was happy, sexy, or rockin'. Don't dis the '70s again. Put on some Zeppelin, turn on a black light, and chill.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, Ny On September 14th 1985, the thirty minute weekly sitcom series, "The Golden Girls", premiered on the NBC-TV network... The series ran for seven years with a total of 173 original episodes... The series' theme song, "Thank You for Being a Friend" was performed, during opening credits, by Cynthia Fee... Andrew Gold's original version charted in 1978 {see next post below}... Between 1976 and 1978 Andrew Gold, as a solo artist, had four records make the Top 100 chart; with one reaching the Top 10, "Lonely Boy" at #7 {for 3 weeks} on June 5th, 1977... Sadly, Mr. Gold passed away on June 3rd, 2011 at the young age of 59 {heart failure}.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, Ny On February 5th 1978, "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #73; and on April 9th it peaked at #25 (for 2 weeks) and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100... His father, Ernest Gold, won the 1960 Academy Award for 'Best Musical Score' for 'Exodus'; the covered version of "Exodus" by Ferrante & Teicher peaked at #2 on the Top 100 in 1961... His mother, Marni Nixon, dubbed the singing voices for Deborah Kerr in the movie 'The King and I', for Natalie Wood in 'West Side Story' and Audrey Hepburn for 'My Fair Lady' (Ms. Hepburn won the Oscar for 'Best Actress')... R.I.P. Mr. Gold (1951 - 2011), his father, Ernest, (1921 - 1999), and his mother, Ms. Nixon, will celebrate her 84th birthday in seventeen days on February 22nd (2014).
  • Esskayess from Dallas, Tx 'And when we die and float away Into the night, the Milky Way You'll hear me call, as we ascend I'll see you there, then once again Thank you for being a friend.'
  • Camille from Toronto, Oh A lot of people still watch the Golden Girls but just don't admit it! This song will forever be associated with the TV show. It's just like the theme song to Cheers where 'you wanna go where everybody knows your name'. All you have to do is hear the first six words and you think of the show.
  • Steven from Waynesboro, Va There was a good reason for those depressing tunes of the late 70s. The whole nation was not in good shape at the time. We had Watergate, Vietnam had just ended, the economic and diplomatic mess of Jimmy Carter. Wasn't much to be happy about.
  • Cindy from Tempe, Az Bill in Southeastern Florida: the song Rocky wasn't about a woman named Rocky; the husband's name is Rocky. Listen closer to the words: "and she said Rocky I've never been in love before/never had a baby before/never had to die before, don't know if I can do it". She's not singing to herself.
  • Amandass from Buckley, Wa Whats great about this song is, when you put one of your friends up to karaoke it without their knowledge, they go up there expecting some Metallica and this starts. HAHA! More cool is when said friend knows the words to this song!
  • Jesse from Haddam, Ct I freakin love it when they sing that song for the Golden Girls!
  • Bill from Southeastern Part Of, Fl Don't forget Andrew Gold's hit Lonely Boy, a song that was eternally playing on my alarm clock radio when it went off at 8 a.m. each morning at camp throughout the summer of 1976. Ugh. Perhaps, I should have changed the station. This song, if you haven't heard it, is about a boy who was the center of his parents' attention until his new sister came around, and he freaked out. It's not one of my favorite songs, mainly because I don't like those depressing 1970s songs that tell weird stories, for example, The Blind Man In The Bleachers (The only way for his father to see him play football was for his father to die and watch from Heaven), Rocky (not Stallone, but a woman named Rocky who dies and her husband is sad because his daughter looks so much like his dearly departed wife), Run Joey Run (A father hates his daughter's boyfriend, so he tries to shoot him, but he misses and kill his daughter by mistake), Living Next Door To Alice (This guy secretly loves his next door neighbor Alice. One day, Alice gets into a limo and she's gone)...you know, those depressing songs that can be found on many of the Have A Nice Day CD collections. And these songs were hits! Weren't there any non-dysfuncional people in the 1970s?
  • Dave from Pomeroy, Oh Andrew recorded and toured as part of Linda Ronstadt's band

A Brief History of ‘Thank You for Being a Friend’

From soothing soft rock to ska to death metal (!), The Golden Girls ’s theme song has traveled down the road, and back again.

travel down the road and back again

“Thank you for being a friend … ( duh-duh-DUH-DUH ) … traveled down the road and back again … ( duh-duh-duh-duh-DUH ) … your heart is true … you’re a pal and a confidante ...”

The Golden Girls turns 30 today , which means that its theme song is also having a birthday. But the iconic song is older than the NBC sitcom (actually, sitcoms ) most commonly associated with it: It was written, and first released as a single, by the musician Andrew Gold, in 1978. It was “just this little throwaway thing,” he said , and it took him “about an hour to write.”

travel down the road and back again

Gold , the son of the Oscar-winning composer Ernest Gold and the singer Marni Nixon—she provided the singing voice for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and Natalie Wood in West Side Story— performed his song in a decidedly soft-rock kind of way. He sang it like like this:

NBC repurposed the song in a condensed form for the 1985 premiere of The Golden Girls , replacing Gold with an appropriately female voice: the jingle singer Cindy Fee —who was also the voice behind the Hoover vacuum cleaner (“ Nobody does it like you ”) and Pontiac cars (“ Get on your Pontiac and ride ”) and Wheaties (“ Now go tell your momma … what the big bo ys eat ”).

Fee performed “Thank You for Being a Friend,” famously—and, warning, ear-wormily—like this:

Once it became associated with the lanai-tastic leisurewear of The Golden Girls , “Thank You for Being a Friend” took on a familiar trajectory: It became loved, in the kind of ironic-nostalgic way that makes the love, in a pop-culture context, endure. It was played during World Series games , and at the end of Super Bowl XL , and in, in a modified form, a cheeky NFL ad . (The lyrics in that case were adjusted to “thank you for being a fan,” natch.) It got meme-ified . It got tattooed . It got a replay , courtesy of Lenny, on The Simpsons . It got a death-metal rendition on Saturday Night Live . It got sassily ska-ified.

Quite a lot for a song that started life as “just this little throwaway thing.”

The Golden Girls – The Golden Girls Theme Song lyrics

Thank you for being a friend. Travel down the road and back again. Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant. And if you threw a party, inviting everyone you knew. You would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say, thank you for being a friend.

Clip of quote: Travel down the road and back again

  • Jun 4, 2022

Travel down the road and back again..

I had a vision for tom's creek before i ever arrived to serve on july 1st, 2014. i created a business card and postcard that had a picture of a road going by fields that said "come journey with us" for i saw a special church that was in the country that people would travel to, not because it was close or convenient, but because we would have real community and vital worship. a church where people would walk with each other through life even in our many differences. a place where we all realize we still have something to learn about god and the power of the grace jesus offers to us. a place where we learn about god from interactions with one another and realize each person has something to offer us in the understanding of god's love and the holy scriptures. i leave knowing that as we have journeyed down the road this last 8 years we have been able to achieve this in ways many churches have not been able to. i thank you for being willing to take those small steps of faith and being willing to open yourselves up to let others in and how you have been part of creating real community. and we shall celebrate that tomorrow in worship., we will also celebrate with new members and baptisms tomorrow. three of the children being baptized this sunday are coming to be baptized because those close to them know the love of tom's creek and feel welcomed. it is because of your witness of how we do church different than other churches around that they feel comfortable to come and have these children embraced in the waters of baptism. even as i leave they will still be entrusted to your care to surround them with love and grace as they grow in years. may we continue to be a community where people feel welcomed and know they will be part of a caring and loving community of faith in jesus., tomorrow i will lead the celebration of communion one last time with you. yet, know that as the body of christ we will continue to celebrate and be connected by that table of grace, even as we celebrate communion in spaces where we are not physically together. that is the glory of the communion table that we know that we celebrate it with others around the world that are connected by the saving power of jesus. the table should remind us that even as we go our separate ways that the holy spirit will continue to connect us in powerful ways every communion sunday. and that one day our souls will unite at a heavenly banquet where all who travelled down the road with jesus and back again will feast together at god's eternal feast of love, and, yes, i will be leading a celebration of the time god has blessed us to be together in ministry. it will not be easy to say good-bye as i lead my last service as your pastor but we have much to give praise for, and we will celebrate tomorrow in worship., reminder, tomorrow we will have only one service at 10:30am. sunday school classes are meeting at 9:30am but there will be no fellowship time downstairs. also, tomorrow there will be no children's church so that our whole church family will be worshipping together the entire time. please, show love and grace to our little ones and their parents. we are blessed that we have children in our church because many churches around have no little voices. we know that our little ones are going to have a hard time sitting still and keeping quiet the whole service so find ways to embrace the sounds and movements of the blessed wee ones in our midst, a reminder that we are having a going away celebration at the carriage house starting at noon. for this event we needed to have numbers to them in advance so they could prepare. if you signed up to come to this event please remember that we have already paid for your meal and if it is possible please be prepared to attend the celebration. there is an elevator available to anyone who needs it, just let the carriage house know of your need when you arrive. also, we are asking those that can, to park at the elementary school parking lot and to walk over so that those with limited mobility will have closer parking spots., while this is my last sunday leading worship at tom's creek i will be around until the movers come on june 17th. i plan to be at the sunday school picnic on monday and will be available if you need anything. in addition, i promised eyler's valley chapel that i would lead worship with them one last time on sunday june 12th at 7pm. so i will be there and our director of music ministries, holly phillips, will be leading special music. they are open to anyone to join them and it is a special worship place that has no electricity, no bathrooms or running water, but the power of the holy spirit is always felt when people gather to worship there., i will probably write and post one more blog before i leave. so for now let us prepare for a day of celebration tomorrow. let us be prepared to have a time where we allow the holy spirit to move us in new and powerful ways. so come on and travel down the road with us again.

A look at the chaos of 'overtourism' in the summer of 2024

To be visited during the summer of “overtourism” in 2024 means traffic jams, water problems and high housing prices

SINTRA, Portugal -- The doorbell to Martinho de Almada Pimentel’s house is hard to find, and he likes it that way. It’s a long rope that, when pulled, rings a literal bell on the roof that lets him know someone is outside the mountainside mansion that his great-grandfather built in 1914 as a monument to privacy.

There's precious little of that for Pimentel during this summer of “overtourism."

Travelers idling in standstill traffic outside the sunwashed walls of Casa do Cipreste sometimes spot the bell and pull the string “because it's funny," he says. With the windows open, he can smell the car exhaust and hear the “tuk-tuk” of outsized scooters named for the sound they make. And he can sense the frustration of 5,000 visitors a day who are forced to queue around the house on the crawl up single-lane switchbacks to Pena Palace, the onetime retreat of King Ferdinand II.

“Now I'm more isolated than during COVID,” the soft-spoken Pimentel, who lives alone, said during an interview this month on the veranda. “Now I try to (not) go out. What I feel is: angry.”

This is a story of what it means to be visited in 2024, the first year in which global tourism is expected to set records since the coronavirus pandemic brought much of life on Earth to a halt. Wandering is surging, rather than leveling off, driven by lingering revenge travel, digital nomad campaigns and so-called golden visas blamed in part for skyrocketing housing prices.

Anyone paying attention during this summer of “overtourism” is familiar with the escalating consequences around the world: traffic jams in paradise. Reports of hospitality workers living in tents. And “anti-tourism” protests intended to shame visitors as they dine — or, as in Barcelona in July, douse them with water pistols.

The demonstrations are an example of locals using the power of their numbers and social media to issue destination leaders an ultimatum: Manage this issue better or we'll scare away the tourists — who could spend their $11.1 trillion a year elsewhere. Housing prices, traffic and water management are on all of the checklists.

Cue the violins, you might grouse, for people like Pimentel who are well-off enough to live in places worth visiting. But it's more than a problem for rich people.

“Not to be able to get an ambulance or to not be able to get my groceries is a rich people problem?” said Matthew Bedell, another resident of Sintra, which has no pharmacy or grocery store in the center of the UNESCO-designated district. “Those don’t feel like rich people problems to me.”

The phrase itself generally describes the tipping point at which visitors and their cash stop benefitting residents and instead cause harm by degrading historic sites, overwhelming infrastructure and making life markedly more difficult for those who live there.

It's a hashtag that gives a name to the protests and hostility that you've seen all summer. But look a little deeper and you'll find knottier issues for locals and their leaders, none more universal than housing prices driven up by short-term rentals like Airbnb, from Spain to South Africa. Some locales are encouraging “quality tourism,” generally defined as more consideration by visitors toward residents and less drunken behavior, disruptive selfie-taking and other questionable choices.

“Overtourism is arguably a social phenomenon, too,” according to an analysis for the World Trade Organization written by Joseph Martin Cheer of Western Sydney University and Marina Novelli of the University of Nottingham. In China and India, for example, they wrote, crowded places are more socially accepted. “This suggests that cultural expectations of personal space and expectations of exclusivity differ.”

The summer of 2023 was defined by the chaos of the journey itself — airports and airlines overwhelmed , passports a nightmare for travelers from the US . Yet by the end of the year, signs abounded that the COVID-19 rush of revenge travel was accelerating.

In January, the United Nations' tourism agency predicted that worldwide tourism would exceed the records set in 2019 by 2%. By the end of March, the agency reported, more than 285 million tourists had travelled internationally, about 20% more than the first quarter of 2023. Europe remained the most-visited destination. The World Travel & Tourism Council projected in April that 142 of 185 countries it analyzed would set records for tourism, set to generate $11.1 trillion globally and account for 330 million jobs.

Aside from the money, there's been trouble in paradise this year, with Spain playing a starring role in everything from water management problems to skyrocketing housing prices and drunken tourist drama.

Protests erupted across the country as early as March, when graffiti in Malaga reportedly urged tourists to “go f——— home.” Thousands of protesters demonstrated in Spain's Canary Islands against visitors and construction that was overwhelming water services and jacking up housing prices. In Barcelona, protesters shamed and squirted water at people presumed to be visitors as they dined al fresco in touristy Las Ramblas.

In Japan, where tourist arrivals fueled by the weak yen were expected to set a new record in 2024, Kyoto banned tourists from certain alleys. The government set limits on people climbing Mount Fuji. And in Fujikawaguchiko, a town that offers some of the best views of the mountain's perfect cone, leaders erected a large black screen in a parking lot to deter tourists from overcrowding the site. The tourists apparently struck back by cutting holes in the screen at eye level.

Air travel, meanwhile, only got more miserable , the U.S. government reported in July. UNESCO has warned of potential damage to protected areas. And Fodor’s “ No List 2024 ” urged people to reconsider visiting suffering hotspots, including sites in Greece and Vietnam, as well as areas with water management problems in California, India and Thailand.

Not-yet-hot spots looked to capitalize on “de-touristing” drives such as Amsterdam's “Stay Away” campaign aimed at partying young men. The “Welcome to MonGOlia” camapaign, for example, beckoned from the land of Genghis Khan . Visits to that country by foreign tourists jumped 25% the first seven months of 2024 over last year.

Tourism is surging and shifting so quickly, in fact, that some experts say the very term “overtourism” is outdated.

Michael O'Regan, a lecturer on tourism and events at Glasgow Caledonian University, argues that “overtourism” has become a buzzword that doesn't reflect the fact that the experience depends largely on the success or failure of crowd management. It's true that many of the demonstrations aren't aimed at the tourists themselves, but at the leaders who allow the locals who should benefit to become the ones who pay.

“There’s been backlash against the business models on which modern tourism has been built and the lack of response by politicians," he said in an interview. Tourism “came back quicker than we expected,” he allows, but tourists aren't the problem. “There's a global fight for tourists. We can't ignore that. ... So what happens when we get too many tourists? Destinations need to do more research."

Virpi Makela can describe exactly what happens in her corner of Sintra.

Incoming guests at Casa do Valle, her hillside bed-and-breakfast near the village center, call Makela in anguish because they cannot figure out how to find her property amid Sintra's “disorganized" traffic rules that seem to change without notice.

“There's a pillar in the middle of the road that goes up and down and you can’t go forward because you ruin your car. So you have to somehow come down but you can’t turn around, so you have to back down the road,” says Makela, a resident of Portugal for 36 years. “And then people get so frustrated they come to our road, which also has a sign that says `authorized vehicles only.' And they block everything.”

Nobody disputes the idea that the tourism boom in Portugal needs better management. The WTTC predicted in April that the country's tourism sector will grow this year by 24% over 2019 levels, create 126,000 more jobs since then and account for about 20% of the national economy. Housing prices already were pushing an increasing number of people out of the property market, driven upward in part by a growing influx of foreign investors and tourists seeking short-term rentals.

To respond, Lisbon announced plans to halve the number of tuk-tuks allowed to ferry tourists though the city and built more parking spaces for them after residents complained that they are blocking traffic.

A 40-minute train ride to the west, Sintra's municipality has invested in more parking lots outside town and youth housing at lower prices near the center, the mayor's office said.

More than 3 million people every year visit the mountains and castles of Sintra, long one of Portugal's wealthiest regions for its cool microclimate and scenery. Sintra City Hall also said via email that fewer tickets are now sold to the nearby historic sites. Pena Palace, for example, began this year to permit less than half the 12,000 tickets per day sold there in the past.

It's not enough, say residents, who have organized into QSintra, an association that's challenging City Hall to “put residents first” with better communication, to start. They also want to know the government's plan for managing guests at a new hotel being constructed to increase the number of overnight stays, and more limits on the number of cars and visitors allowed.

“We're not against tourists,” reads the group's manifesto. “We're against the pandemonium that (local leaders) cannot resolve."
