Entertainment, kings and queens of laughs: royal comedy tour coming to ucf, stars will perform at addition financial arena on friday.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Get ready for a comedy coronation at the University of Central Florida Friday night as the kings and queens of laughter roll into town.

The Royal Comedy Tour is coming to Addition Financial Arena at 8 p.m. and features a star-studded lineup that includes Sommore, Bruce Bruce, Lavell Crawford and Don “DC” Curry.

Sommore is known for being a trailblazer to women in comedy, with such specials as “Chandelier Status” and “A Queen With No Spades,” and has starred in a number of films, including “Soul Plane,” “Something New” and “Friday After Next.”

Bruce Bruce has been seen on stage, TV and film in everything from Netflix’s “Family Reunion” to Ice Cube’s “XXX: State of the Union.”

Local News | Sommore returns to Trenton with Royal Comedy 2023 tour

Comedienne and Capital City native, Sommore, is scheduled to return to her hometown on Jan. 28 as a part of the Royal Comedy Tour . Joining her will be a star-studded lineup including, Bruce Bruce, Lavell Crawford, Dominique, Turae, and Joe Clair. The tour which began on Jan.13 in Orlando will make its way to CURE Insurance Arena next Saturday.

Before her homecoming, Sommore spoke to the Trentonian via phone call about her upbringing in Trenton, future plans to expand in the city, a message to the youth, and more.

Growing up in Trenton, Sommore recalls it being a “buzzing town”.

“Majority of the jobs were industrial jobs. People came in the city to work, so there were bars on every corner, community centers, lots of things for us to do. A roller skating rink, a movie theater downtown. It was a small city, but it was a city-city.”

A city that she continually expressed love for throughout the conversation.

“It gave me pride. I’m from a Capital City. That within itself, I’m from the capital of New Jersey, that’s a sense of pride right there.”

Although her mother was an accountant and her father was an English teacher and a poet, Sommore credits her family as having a direct impact on her career. She even went as far as to say she isn’t the funniest person in her family.

“We love to laugh. We love to get together and laugh. Laughter was a great, big part of me growing up. The things that most people would be embarrassed about, me and my family we laugh about,” she said.

Coming from a big family who mostly hails from Trenton, the comedienne had homes in each corner of the city.

“I had a home in East Trenton I can go to, I got a home in West Trenton I can go to, I got a home in Wilbur Section, I can go to, so when you have family throughout the city I’m all over the city.”

After graduating from Trenton Catholic Academy, Sommore went on to attend Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and mathematics. Before her breakout in comedy, Sommore taught algebra and owned multiple businesses. Some of which included a clothing store, a shoe store, and a grocery store with imported food and specialty products from Africa. It was her time learning about business, that helped her in other aspects of life.

“Everything I learned about business I needed to apply it to life. Everything. College gave me structure and responsibility and I needed that.”

However, once comedy took off the comedienne didn’t look back. As cliche, as it may sound Sommore, would use a book called, “How To Be A Stand-Up Comedian” to learn more about the business of comedy.

“I did exactly what the book said to do, the comedy queen said, “ Most people would probably just jump on stage. I wanted to know the science of things. I’m one of those people who like to know how things work before I get involved in it. So, I learned the business aspect of stand-up comedy and then I applied it. By me learning it that way I think that’s what helped me. I love to write and I think that’s what separates me from a lot of comedians, my writing skills. That’s what keeps me fresh. And my career is constantly flourishing because of my writing. I have six comedy specials most people don’t have two. And I executive produced them myself there goes my business degree.”

Sommore found success in the mid-90s, becoming the first woman to host BET’s Comic View, as well as hosting Def Comedy Jam and Showtime at the Apollo, and receiving the Richard Pryor Award for Comic of the Year award.

Sommore recalls those early years of comedy as “fresh and new”.

“I was excited. I watch my old tapes now and it’s like I’m screaming all the time. It’s just the excitement in me. It was fresh. It was new. Def Comedy Jam was just coming on the scene, so we were getting opportunities to showcase. It was just a great time to be in stand-up. I’m glad I jumped on that wave and came through at that time.”

By the turn of the century, Sommore was a part of the Queens of Comedy tour which expanded her fanbase as well as broke a record with her performing for over more than 50,000 people in Atlanta, Georgia. The made-for-television movie of the same name would be released in 2001, becoming the highest-rated and longest-running special in the history of the Showtime Network. The next year, she was the only woman performer on the “Latham Entertainment Presents” tour. In a heavily male-dominated industry, Sommore never wavered from the challenge.

“I did my research before I even went into stand-up and knew that it was a male-dominated business. I knew that it would be an uphill battle. I knew that I’d often proved that women can do this. I’m the creator of the “Queens of Comedy”, I always proved that women can do this. This is a field, we can do. As much as I’ve done and accomplished, we still have a long way to go. There are still some people who just don’t think women are funny. And that’s cool because funny is subjective, but business-wise I will handle my business and prove that we can do this.”

Sommore also added a piece of advice for young black women who aspire to break out into male-dominated fields, “Educate yourself in the field you want to be in. The more you know the more confidence you’ll have doing business. So when things get hard and they will get hard. You won’t take it personal. You’ll know that it’s just business. A majority of the things I face are just business. As an artist, and as a businesswoman, once you know the business you can handle it better.”

While not her goal, Sommore would go on to become a trailblazer for women in comedy. with more than 25 years of comedic experience and success. Since her start in the early 90s, Sommore called social media the biggest change. Younger comics have the ability to go straight to the consumer, which the comedienne said gives the younger generation a more “entrepreneurial approach” to comedy.

“You can get online and perform every single day if you want. It’s a whole different world out there, she added.

While the industry is changing, Sommore has stuck to her roots, “I am a stand-up comedienne, I’m not an internet comic, where I do skits and I’m online being funny. I’m not doing that, I have no interest in that. I do stand-up where people pay and come see me. If there is a difference [between comedy from the past vs. today] society has created a difference, but I still do it the way that I like to do it.”

If there is a difference between stand-up comics and internet comics, Sommore believes they can all coexist.

“The audience has gotten wider. We’ve made room for people who are internet comedians and people who do skits on stage. They’ve branched off into a different type of stand-up comedy.”

The comedienne who has seen success in acting, producing, hosting, and stand-up, calls bringing the Royal Comedy Tour to Trenton, one of her proudest accomplishments.

“I celebrate the fact that we’re doing the Royal Comedy Tour. This tour started off 10 years ago, this year we have 30 dates and I was now able to bring it to my hometown. That’s an accomplishment. And bringing it to the arena? That feels good.”

Sommore added, “I want to try and make it an annual comedy show, where we could eventually have a comedy festival. I’d like to bring different nationalities of comedy to Trenton. We started off in Atlantic City with a comedy tour and then we ended up going into a comedy festival. We did the same thing in Miami. I want to prove that Trenton is a market and that we can do it.”

When the Royal Comedy Tour comes to Trenton next Saturday, Sommore plans to announce a donation to a non-profit organization from Trenton during her set. Sommore also has a new comedy special coming to Netflix next month called “Queen Chandelier” in which her opening monologue talks about being from Trenton.

What she takes the most pride in, however, is being able to stay true to herself.

“I’ve done things my way. I didn’t accept everything, meaning my integrity wasn’t compromised. They’ve offered me movies to do things and I just wasn’t proud of the role. I just didn’t think it would be an extension of who I was, I take pride in that I always considered that I’m from New Jersey and I’m not going to be corny. I take pride in that, I do. It’s just certain things that I won’t do,” she said.

These thoughts mirror the sentiments she left for Trenton Youth.

“You have to be the difference that you want to see in the city and it’s just that simple. I tell people take pride in your city. Be the change that you want to see. For me, I had pride in my street. I grew up on Stuyvesant Avenue. You take pride in your neighborhood, you take pride in your side of town, in your neighborhood, in your last name. I represent the Ramboughs. And when you take pride in that, you be the change that you want to see.”
