Abbottabad Chairlift

Abbottabad Chairlift offers one of the most breathtaking views of the area. The aerial tramway seems old-fashioned, but it has been around since 2014 and has proven safe and reliable. Look no further than the Abbottabad Chairlift if you want an exciting way to get from one point to another within the Abbottabad area! Here’s everything you need to know about the ride and how it works.

Abbottabad Chairlift Attractions, Ticket, Timings & Locations

The Chairlift is a leisure attraction in Abbottabad, the capital city of the Hazara region, famous for its beauty. This Chairlift provides a panoramic view of scenic mountains, gorgeous valleys, and serene meadows.

Since its inauguration on 2 October 2014, this Chairlift has become one of the favorite spots for visitors and residents to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The Chairlift allows experiencing mountain adventure from a bird’s eye view. It operates daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Weather at Abbottabad Chairlift

The elevation at the Abbottabad Chairlift sits at approximately 6000 feet, with a climate similar to places like Scotland and Afghanistan. Clear, sunny days are standard throughout most of the year, but there are occasional snowfalls during winter.

However, this higher altitude results in more precipitation than in other areas. Snow may stick around for as long as three months each year.

When is the Best Time to Visit Abbottabad Chairlift?

The winter months, from December to February, are a great time to visit. This is when there are fewer crowds, and you’ll be able to experience snow-covered chairlifts and skiing slopes. However, visiting from April to June during the summer is best if you want a warmer and humid climate. That way, you can take advantage of various hiking trails and lounge around on the grounds’ many swimming pools!

Recommended Gears

You must follow these simple steps to ensure your safety on the Abbottabad chairlift.

1. First, make sure you are wearing your seatbelt for an easy way to protect yourself from falls and accidents.

2. Next, it is recommended that everyone who rides up or down should go with a partner and that they always hold onto a handle.

3.   Lastly, don’t hesitate to ask someone nearby for help if you have doubts about your safety while riding this Chairlift.

Hiking Shoes

The Chairlift is about 5km long and can take up to two people per cabin. The ride is not for those prone to motion sickness as it’s bumpy and tiring to the body. It takes about 20 minutes to get from one side of the valley to the other. Those who take this trip should also have a hiking stick and plenty of water!

Hiking shoes are recommended because they grip better on the ground than sneakers. To ensure your footing is secure, try walking with your toes pointing outwards to have more surface area to balance yourself. To keep your back straight, arch your lower back as you walk downhill by tightening your stomach muscles.

Warm Clothes

Warm clothes for all-weather, year-round protection can come from 100% wool garments, ideal for cold and wet conditions. Wool fiber is naturally water-repellent, warm, breathable, and insulates even when wet during the Abbottabad chairlift.

Sunglasses & Hat in Summer

Weather can be a barrier to going outside in Abbottabad, and many stay indoors. Staying active is essential, though, and so is sun protection. Sunglasses and hats are a good option because they’re fashionable and keep you cool while providing some coverage from the sun.

Camping Essentials

If you’re coming to climb, it’s a good idea to bring a good pair of gloves. And don’t forget your helmet. For those staying overnight on the mountain and wanting to cook at altitude, a tent stove and gas cylinder will be necessary for boiling water or cooking food. You can also take advantage of the campfire ring.

Attractions at Abbottabad Chairlift

At Abbottabad, one can ride the Chairlift during the warmer days to enjoy the gorgeous views of gardens, parks, and buildings. Adventure seekers may also enjoy hiking and cycling around Abbottabad for a more hands-on experience. The Chairlift also offers excellent city views worth experiencing if you’re visiting Abbottabad. Pack some lunch as you enjoy a day outdoors with friends or family, or feel free to try out the restaurant here for delicious homemade Pakistani food!

The Abbottabad chairlift is an outdoor trekking site. It is 6000 meters and has scenic surroundings with a view of lush forests and green valleys below. The major attraction of this hike is the meadows covered with wildflowers in summer, which provides a stunning contrast to their golden brown foliage during summer and their white blanket during snowfall. These fields can be seen up close as one climbs to the summit.

If you love outdoor activities and visiting an area with many forests, this place is for you. The Abbottabad chairlift is a thing to consider if you love fresh air and camping and want to be away from it all. It’s also ideal for those who enjoy close contact with nature without needing anything except what’s at hand.

Photography

The scenery from the Chairlift can make for some great photos. It’s often scenic, with many trees, mountain views, and lakes. These are not just trees but very tall coniferous pine trees called deodars. This may be why it is still so important to protect them today.

While it is impossible to reach the Abbottabad Chairlift by car, it is possible to get to the destination by train at the railway station and then take a bus or car from there. All eight people have been successfully rescued after getting trapped in a cable car hanging above a ravine in Pakistan

Some of the group were rescued by helicopter; after nightfall, others were safely brought back down to the ground by zip line

The country's acting prime minister has voiced his relief, while the interior ministry has praised the "selflessness and determination" of the rescuers

The cable car was left dangling in the air for more than 14 hours, with rescue teams battling challenging conditions to reach the stranded group

Makeshift cable cars are widely used in the mountainous region, and the children in the car were going to school when the cables snapped

Locals rescue second child by zip line published at 16:20 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 16:20 BST 22 August 2023

We're getting more detail now on the rescue of two children from the suspended cable car.

The first child was brought out by army helicopter, while the second was pulled to safety by locals using a zip line.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the daring rescue and we hope to bring you some of that footage soon.

As we've been reporting, military helicopters were deployed today in an attempt to rescue people trapped in a cable car dangling hundreds of feet above the ground in Pakistan.

Rescuers have been able to save at least two children so far, but six people are still trapped in the car.

But fading light and strong winds have made the rescue operation difficult. The helicopters retreated after sunset.

We're hearing now that the army helicopters in Battagram has been left for the night due to windy weather and darkness.

Rescue teams are continuing their efforts with the help of local people on the ground to try and reach the remaining people trapped in the cable car.

Sources have told the BBC the air operation will again start from tomorrow morning if required.

Reports of more children rescued published at 15:52 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 15:52 BST 22 August 2023

Two more children have now been rescued, according to reports, which would bring the total to four.

That number has been provided by Faisal Karim Kundi, the central secretary of information of the Pakistan People's Party, who spoke to BBC News a few minutes ago.

The same number has also been provided by the Reuters news agency.

But there are conflicting reports, and it's a fluid situation in which hard facts have taken some time to emerge - with relatively few people reporting from the ground. Stay on this page for further updates.

See the moment a passenger was rescued from a dangling cable car

Dramatic footage sent to us by the Reuters news agency shows the moment a child - reportedly the first - was rescued by helicopter.

How common are cable car incidents? published at 15:28 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 15:28 BST 22 August 2023

While we await news of any further rescues, here's some more context to today's events.

Cable cars are used as a mode of transport by millions of people all around the world every year. They are generally safe and incidents are very rare, but they do happen - as we’ve seen today.

Just last year in Jharkhand, India, three people died and more than 50 were left dangling in the air for days before being rescued by military helicopter crews.

Two of the people who died are understood to have fallen to their deaths during the course of the rescue operation.

The deadliest cable car crash took place near the Italian ski resort of Cavalese in 1976, when 42 people lost their lives.

A cable car fell 213m (700 ft) down a mountainside into a meadow before a three-tonne (3,000 kg) overhead carriage assembly crushed the cabin when it fell on top of it.

Rescuers have managed to pull a second child from the cable car, according to a rescue agency spokesperson and a district official, cited by the Reuters news agency.

Pakistan's military carried out the first two rescues in a high-risk operation complicated by gusty winds.

Cable car wire snapped on its fifth trip of the day published at 14:19 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 14:19 BST 22 August 2023

places to visit in abbottabad

We have spoken to officers who have been on the ground, and they have said that this is a cable car the children and adults were using to travel from their village to the local school.

If they were to do this by road it would take two hours, but by comparison in the cable car, it only takes four minutes.

According to a local police officer, this cable car was created by a local mechanic. Authorities are now attempting to try to rescue the individuals trapped onboard.

Police say the cable car had four previous trips this morning, and it was on the fifth trip the cable broke.

We have seen multiple attempts by the army, using helicopters to try and lower people down to get to the people inside. But, the big worry is making the situation worse. Winds could be created by the blades of the helicopter - which, combined with natural strong winds, makes this particularly precarious.

They are looking at alternative options, including additional cables, but at the moment it is really unclear how long this cable will hold for - and how officials are going to be able to rescue these individuals dangling inside the cable car.

As we've been reporting, rescuers are struggling to free six children and two adults stuck inside the cable car dangling above a river bank in northern Pakistan.

Repeated attempts have been made by helicopters to approach the car, but strong winds are hindering the operation.

The below map gives you an idea of the surroundings faced by rescuers just outside of Battagram.

Maulana Abdul Qayyum's son was going to school. His brother was only going with him for the journey, saying that he would leave and come back.

He tells the BBC that evening is coming and the darkness will spread. Once it gets dark, the operation could become very difficult. Things will get out of control, he says.

He says his brother Gulfraz's mobile phone was working earlier, but now it is silent. We don't know how the children in the cable car are doing.

“I am afraid that the time for the operation is short," he says. "A new rope is currently being prepared to be laid, but this may take time. Thousands of people are engaged in the work of laying the rope."

Officials working on alternative rescue plan published at 13:36 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 13:36 BST 22 August 2023

An official at the scene has said that they are working on an alternative rescue plan, where a new rope is being laid on both sides of the cable car as a contingency in case the army is unable to extricate the passengers using helicopters.

Experts have been called to speed up the work of laying the new rope, which could then be used used to reach the stranded vehicle.

Explainer: Why this is such a difficult rescue published at 13:26 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 13:26 BST 22 August 2023

The cable car rescue is proving to be difficult due to its shape and fragility in the air, explains BBC reporter Courtney Bembridge.

Courtney says the car is hanging from just one side and the rotor of the helicopter can affect this "delicate situation".

Pakistan cable car: Why it's such a difficult rescue

Cable car had already done four trips on morning school run published at 13:15 British Summer Time 22 August 2023 13:15 BST 22 August 2023

Farhat Javed BBC Urdu Senior Journalist, reporting from Islamabad

The village where the eight people were coming from is Jangri, while the school is located in the village of Batangi.

It takes two hours walk to reach the school from that valley. Therefore, a local man from Batgram who is a mechanic, decided to build a lift.

A police officer has told me that he did get a No Objection Certificate from the city administration and that the chair lift locally known as "Dolly" was checked every month, but we couldn’t verify this claim.

The owner is at the scene.

People would travel via this lift as it would take them only four minutes to reach Batangi from where it would take them another two hours drive to reach the nearest market.

This morning, the lift already did four trips to and from the school. On the fifth one its ropes broke, the policeman says.

It's just after 13:00 local time in London and 17:00 in Battagram, where the passengers of a cable car are still suspended above a ravine in northern Pakistan. Here's what you need to know:

  • Eight people , including six students on their way to school, have been trapped in the vehicle for almost 10 hours
  • Its cables snapped at about 07:15 local time , leaving the chair lift dangling by a single rope
  • The occupants, suspended in the car about 300 metres above ground, were without water or food for hours. One of the boys on board has a heart condition
  • The Pakistani army is attempting a complex rescue operation involving a soldier descending from hovering helicopters to retrieve the trapped group
  • But strong winds are hampering rescue efforts
  • Cable cars are a normal mode of transport in Pakistan's mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where there is poor road connectivity

'Commando' seen descending from helicopter

Jawad Hussain, assistant commissioner of Allai, told the BBC that an attempt is being made to conduct a rescue operation with the help of helicopters from the Pakistani Army.

A commando has tried twice to reach the cable car by the help of rope.

According to Hussain, the cable car's ropes snapped at 07:00 local time (02:00 GMT) this morning.

A little later, water and other food items were delivered to the stranded people by the rescue team from the helicopter.

People from the Shangla and Bisham areas are going towards Allai to offer help. These are the people who usually have experience in doing relief activities in such situations.
