How to get an Italy Schengen visa appointment in the UK

Looking for an Italy Schengen Visa appointment in the UK? This comprehensive guide draws from the experiences of real people to provide practical tips to navigate this often challenging process.

italy tourist visa uk

As a UK resident with your heart set on experiencing Italy's rich cultural heritage, world-renowned cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes, you're likely eager to kickstart the Italy Schengen Visa process. However, one of the most significant challenges you might face is securing an appointment for your Italy Schengen Visa. In recent times, the demand for Schengen visas has dramatically increased, resulting in a heightened difficulty to obtain an appointment. With the constant message of "No available appointments" or "Please select a different date and time because all appointments are scheduled in this slot," popping up on the VFS and TLS websites, the process can become frustrating and tedious.

However, do not let this deter you. With strategic planning and the right approach, you can navigate this process successfully. Drawing from the experiences and advice of numerous individuals who have undergone this process, this article provides a comprehensive guide to booking your Italy Schengen Visa appointment in the UK. Let's delve into the invaluable tips and strategies they shared on various Reddit threads discussing this issue.

Persistence and Vigilance: The Art of Refreshing

One of the most common tips echoed across the community is the need for persistence and vigilance. The strategy is simple but crucial: constantly refreshing the VFS and TLS websites. One Reddit user suggested, "Check the VFS website more often. As a rule of thumb, you should refresh the appointments page every 15 minutes." While this might seem like a daunting task, it is a tried and tested method that has proven successful for many.

Premium Services: A Potential Lifesaver?

If time is a constraint and you have some extra budget, you might want to consider opting for the premium services offered by VFS. These services could expedite your visa appointment booking process, albeit at an additional cost. As per a Reddit user's advice, "Have you tried their premium services? They charge for it, but if you're in a rush, it might help."

Timing Is Everything: Capitalising on Evening Slots

In the quest for an Italy Schengen Visa appointment, timing can be everything. Several individuals have noted that new appointments tend to be released in the evening. One user provided this insight: "I got mine on Thursday for Italy, and I’ve been trying for 3 weeks. I’ve noticed you see appointments become available between 17:30 to 18:00 UK time, usually a slot the next day as well (I’ve witnessed it 4 times). In general, check in the evening, at least from my experience."

Broaden Your Horizons: Exploring Other TLS Centres

If securing an appointment through VFS proves to be particularly challenging, it might be worth considering TLS appointment centres in other countries. As one Reddit user recommended: "In case one wants to ensure they get appointments, I suggest looking for countries where the TLS appointment centre is used (and not VFS). As far as I checked, both Belgium and France have TLS. Although France is very much in demand, Belgium appointments are found quite easily."

Be Strategic: Timing Your Booking Around Mid-Month

It's often suggested that VFS Italy releases appointments in batches around the 15th of each month. If this is the case, then timing your booking around this period might improve your chances. One Reddit user confirmed this, saying: "VFS Italy releases appointments in batch around 15th each month. This is your best chance."

Be Prepared: Keep Your Information Ready

When an appointment slot opens up, speed is of the essence. You'll want to have all your necessary information at hand to fill out the application form as quickly as possible. "Always have your documents and credit card ready. As soon as you see an appointment, fill the application form. Be quick! Other people will want to get the same appointment," shared one Reddit user. Having your information pre-typed in a text editor, ready to be pasted into the application form, could be a significant time-saver.

The Backdoor Strategy: Securing a Schengen Visa Through Another Country

This strategy involves applying for a Schengen Visa through another country, making travel plans there, securing the visa, and then travelling to Italy from that country. This approach would be in full compliance with Schengen rules. One user suggested, "Find any Schengen country which can give you an appointment. Eg the Netherlands, France, etc. Make some travel plans with them for say 1-2 weeks, including hotel reservations etc. Get the visa. Then enter that country and then go to Italy from there (and of course cancel the other-country hotel reservation)."

Other Visa Centres: Broadening Your Options

It could be advantageous to consider visa centres other than VFS, like the Greece centre, which operates its own appointment booking system. A Reddit user hinted at this saying, "Another nice option is Greece. They have their own appointment booking system and last year I saw more appointments lying around than any VFS country."

Digitalisation of Schengen Visas: A Ray of Hope?

While the issues with booking appointments for Schengen visas are well known, the good news is that Schengen Visas are becoming digitalised. This means the entire process can be completed online, which will hopefully make the process smoother and more accessible in the future.

In conclusion, the process of securing an Italy Schengen Visa appointment in the UK can be challenging, but it's not impossible. The key is patience, vigilance, and strategic planning. By using the tips provided in this article, your chances of successfully booking your appointment will significantly improve. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity in disguise. The process might seem daunting, but the reward at the end - experiencing the beauty and culture of Italy - is undoubtedly worth the effort.

How to apply for a visa to Italy from the U.K. ?

Disclaimer : Our offer does not apply to UK residents.

Will I need a visa to travel to Italy from the U.K.?

If you are a U.K. citizen, you will not need a visa to travel to Italy if you plan on staying for fewer than 90 days, even though Britain left the European Union in 2020, with transitional arrangements expiring at the end of the year. This is because there is a visa-free travel arrangement between the EU and the U.K. for short-stay visits. From the end of 2023, those looking to travel to Italy without the need for a visa will need to apply via the ETIAS system facilitating visa-free travel to all Schengen Area states. Before then you will just need your passport.

How will I apply for ETIAS ?

You will need to fill out an ETIAS application form online, which is expected to take about 10 minutes to complete, with you answering various questions and providing personal details. The only document you will need is your valid biometric passport, preferably with an electronic chip. Once approved, this will be valid for trips for three years or until the end of the validity of the passport registered during the application, whichever comes first.

However, if you are living in the U.K. but are a citizen of a country without a visa-free travel arrangement with Italy and the rest of the Schengen Zone countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen Visa for short stays in Italy.

Longer stay visas

For longer stays to work, live or study in Italy, British citizens will need to apply for visas and residency permits, as Brexit has ended freedom of movement between the U.K. and EU countries.

If I need an Italian visa, how and where do I apply from the U.K?

The firm VFS Global Italy UK handles visa applications on behalf of Italy in the U.K. You can fill in your application form on the VFS website.

You will need to book an appointment at a VFS Italy UK center. Where you book your appointment will depend on where you are based. If you are in Scotland, you should book an appointment at the center in Edinburgh. There are two centers that serve England and Wales - those in London and the south should book an appointment in London and those in the north should book their appointment at VFS’ Manchester center.

You can also apply for an Italian visa at the Consulate General of Italy in Edinburgh or London. More information and contact details are available via the website, here: the Italian embassy in London website

Their respective email addresses are: [email protected] and [email protected].

You can find the VFSGlobal website, here: VFSGlobal.

What documents will I need for my appointment?

To obtain a short-stay visa, you will need a valid passport or travel document issued within the last 10 years that is valid for at least three months after the date you exit the Schengen Area. You will also require a valid U.K. residency permit or another form of identity card, one passport-style photo, travel and medical insurance which is valid in the whole Schengen Area and covers you up to costs of €30,000, a cover letter stating the purpose of the visit and your itinerary, including travel tickets and proof of accommodation, such as rental agreements, hotel bookings, or an invitation from friends and family, as well as proof of civil status, like a marriage or birth certificate, and proof of financial subsistence during your stay (the amount you need in Italy varies from €45 to €28 per day, depending on the length of your trip), such as bank statements.

Additionally, for long-stay work, study, or family residency visas (to join a spouse in Italy) you also need an invitation letter from the firm or institution inviting you to Italy for work or educational reasons. For work visas, you should provide evidence of a salaried employment contract. Those who are highly skilled or who earn high salaries (approximately €55,200) can apply for an EU Blue Card, entitling you to work across the European Union. Otherwise, you should check that your qualifications and skills match the strict requirements for an entry set by the Italian government.

If you are joining a family member you will need to prove they are a citizen or legal long-term resident of Italy, with documents like a passport or residency permit, social security card, proof of your relationship - as well as proof you or your family can sustain yourselves financially. You will also need to apply for a temporary residency permit allowing you to stay in Italy - which must be done at the post office within eight days of your arrival, and then completed and handed in at the local police station.

Short-stay visas cost €80 and €40 for children aged 6 to 12 years old, with those below that age exempt from the fee, as are spouses and family members of Italian nationals. Long-stay visas cost €105.20 for work visas, €45.40 for study visas, and family reunion ones, €36.30, with the residency permit costing €76.00. You will also need medical insurance as it is a mandatory requirement of a long-stay visa.

Italy offers it all, whether you’re searching for a leisurely beach vacation, a cultured city break, or an action-packed mountain excursion.

  • Are you a resident of the UK who intends to go to Italy for pleasure or business?
  • Is an Italy Visit Visa required to travel Italy or is it possible to go without one?
  • What paperwork and steps must you take to apply for an Italy Schengen visa UK?

In this blog article, we’ll address these concerns and offer some practical advice for streamlining and simplifying the visa application process.

Is Italian visa necessary for traveling from UK?

The answer is based on the type of visa you need and how long you want to remain. You can visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period if you have a full UK passport or a British National Overseas passport. As long as you don’t stay more than 90 days, you can enter Italy and other Schengen nations without a visa.

However, if you are a resident of the UK and a non-EU national, you could require an Italy Schengen visa UK to visit the country. A Schengen visa is a transit, business, or short-stay visa that enables you to travel to any of the 26 Schengen-area nations. Italy and the majority of the other EU nations—with the exception of Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, and Romania—are part of the Schengen region.

Check the list of nations whose citizens need visas to go to Europe to determine if you need one to visit Italy. To find out if you are eligible to apply for an Italian tourist visa from UK , you may also use the Schengen visa eligibility checking tool.

Do you need a visa to travel to Italy ? That all depends on which passport you hold. Visa requirements for Italy range from precisely zero – no visa or registration needed – to mandatory visas which must be applied for well in advance of your trip. That’s in addition to restrictions on the length of stay, which also vary, depending on what passport you have.

Whether it’s the cliffside Cinque Terre villages or the cityscapes of Rome , Florence and Venice  that draw you in, Italy is one of Europe’s big-hitter destinations with good reason.

Deciding to go is the simple part, but figuring out the rules around visiting can be a bit trickier. To make things a little simpler, here’s our guide to visa requirements for Italy, with everything you need to know about the different visa types available and the rules around them.

Visa-free travel to Italy

Italy is part of the Schengen area – a bloc of 27 European countries that comprise the largest border-free area on the planet. Citizens of these countries, as well as the wider EU and EAA, do not require a visa to enter Italy, and there is no time limit on how long they may stay.

Around 60 countries outside the EU, including the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, are also granted visa-free travel to Italy and other Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days within any 180 day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after your intended departure date, and you may be required to show documentation justifying the reason for your stay and your date of departure. To see if your country is covered, use the questionnaire on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Note that the 90 days covers travel in the entire Schengen area; for example, if you’ve spent 30 days in France, your maximum stay in Italy is 60 days. The 180 days are calculated on a rolling basis and the 90 days don’t have to be consecutive – you can dip in and out of Schengen throughout the year. Calculate dates carefully, as the 90 days cannot be extended, and overstayers risk being deported or barred from re-entry to the bloc. Various online calculators exist to crunch the numbers and work out your remaining allowance if you input your travel dates and destinations.

Note that the EU plans to bring its long-awaited ETIAS visa waiver scheme in 2024. Non-EU passport holders who currently travel visa-free to Italy will need to get preauthorization before travel, in a system similar to the United States’ ESTA program. It is set to cost around €7 and should give speedy online authorization.

Visa requirements from other countries

Travelers from all other countries require a Schengen visa to enter Italy (and the wider Schengen area). Such countries include India, Pakistan, China, Egypt, Thailand, the Philippines and Rwanda. Again, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website lists requirements by country.

If required, visas should be applied for at the nearest Italian consulate in your country of origin. Documents needed include a recent passport-size photograph and a passport with an expiry date of at least three months longer than that of the visa requested. You may also be asked to show a return ticket and booked accommodation, as well as proof that you have the financial means to support yourself during your visit to the country, and health insurance to cover your trip.

Schengen visas cost €80 for adults and €40 for children (aged 6-12; there is no charge for children under 6). The tourist visa duration is 90 days for the entire Schengen area. Visas are usually valid for six months and can only be extended in exceptional circumstances. The website for your nearest Italian consulate will have details on how to book an appointment and make the application.

Can I get a working holiday visa for Italy?

Italy offers a working holiday visa to 18-30 year olds from Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, and 18-35 year olds from Canada. These visas allow holders to stay in Italy for one year, and work for a maximum of six months (for a maximum of three months for the same employer) during that time to financially support themselves.

It’s also worth noting that a permesso di soggiorno (permit to stay, also referred to as a residence permit) is required by all non-EU nationals who stay in Italy longer than three months. In theory, you should apply for one within eight days of arriving in Italy.

EU citizens do not require a permesso di soggiorno , but are required to register with the local registry office (Ufficio Anagrafe) if they stay in Italy for more than three months.

Step 5: Receive your visa

Once you have submitted your application, you can track its progress. Go to VFS Global’s website and click on: “Track your application”:

On the next page, click on the tracking link:

Key in the requested information and you can find out what stage your application is at:

Please note, this tracking service is only for Schengen visas. If you have applied for a National visa, the consulate will contact you once they have reached a decision.

When a decision about your visa application has been made, you can collect your passport from the consulate or VFS Global. VFS Global can also send your passport back to you via DX Securemail courier at a cost of £14.95 per passport. There is no collection facility in Edinburgh and Royal Mail Delivery envelopes will not be accepted for the return of passports.

The decision will be either:

  • Approved – you will find your Italy visa inside your passport
  • Rejected – your visa application has been rejected for a reason

Common rejection reasons

  • There was no proof of accommodation – you must provide proof of where you are staying in Italy. This could be a hotel booking or rental agreement or, if you are being invited to stay in someone’s home, you will need to provide an invitation letter
  • There was not enough time to process the visa – you must apply well in advance of your trip to allow enough time for your application to be processed (see above processing times)
  • Employment status could not be verified – you must be able to prove your employment status whether you are employed, self-employed, a student, retired or unemployed
  • You provided fake documents – presenting fake documents will definitely lead to your application being rejected and you will be found out, so don’t do this
