Incredible Irish send-off for 'father of all Travellers' Simon Doherty

Incredible Irish send-off for 'father of all Travellers' Simon Doherty

Erica Doyle Higgins

BY: Erica Doyle Higgins April 18, 2017

THE 'father of all Travellers' was laid to rest yesterday following a true Irish send-off in Britain with hundreds of mourners paying their respects.

Simon 'Simey' Doherty, father of celebrity Irish Traveller Paddy Doherty, passed away April 6 at a hospital in Epsom following an illness.

He was remembered with a ceremony at St Michael's Catholic Church in Ashtead, Surrey, followed by a burial in St Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Kensal Green, North London.

Paddy Doherty is well-known across Britain and Ireland for his part in Channel 4's My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding , When Paddy met Sally and Celebrity Big Brother, which he won in 2011.

Hundreds of mourners flocked from Ireland and Britain to pay their respects to the 'King of the Dohertys' as his remains were carried through the streets of Ashtead, followed by a convoy of over a dozen Rolls Royces carrying Irish Tricolour flags.

Mr Doherty Senior's coffin was also decorated with a Tricolour, and carried by a carriage and horses who also wore the Irish flag.

Floral tributes were laid at the grave including a shamrock, horseshoes, bottles of whisky, a pint of Guinness and a Rolls Royce.

Green shamrock balloons and six white doves were released into the air following his burial as mourners sang laments at his graveside.

Speaking at his funeral , Paddy Doherty said his father "lived the best and was the best".

"He was like Mafia in his own way, not in a bad way – any trouble they would go to him. He was like the godfather – what he said was law. He said I want no one crying at my funeral, I want them happy, singing and get them drunk.

"He wasn't an average man – he was outstanding, a great man," he added.

"Everything had to be five stars for him, he lived the best and was the best. My poor mother – her heart is devastated, her heart is broken.

"I'm so grateful how many people have turned out – we just want everything to go well, everything has to be tremendous and over the top," he finished.

Mr Doherty's coffin was then driven to the cemetery in a horse and carriage, and carried up a red carpet to his grave accompanied by bagpipes.

Speaking to The Irish Post, Irish dancer Róisín Mullins – who gave a speech about Simon Doherty and sang The Fields of Athenry at his funeral – said the celebration of his life was "amazing" and the Doherty family are "warm, loving people".

"The funeral itself was amazing, not like anything I'd ever seen," she said.

"Paddy really put together a send-off for his father that really was a celebration of his life as well as being quite a formal funeral with the Catholic Mass.

"There were lots of Irish flags, and five girls from Raven Irish Troupe performed and I, myself, gave a speech about Simon Doherty and performed The Fields of Athenry .

irish traveller paddy

"I sat down with Paddy and his sister Mary last week and they talked about what kind of man Simon was, and what really came through when I met their family was that they're very warm, welcoming, loving people and that came through when they talked about their father.

"He was a very strict man also, a very stern man, but at the same time he was good and great, and a great singer," she said.

"He was seen as a father to all children, a father to all Travellers, a father to everyone and that's why there were so many people at the funeral," Róisín added.

Speaking about the Travelling community, Róisín said: "There was a great sadness amongst the Travelling community yesterday.

"People had come a long way as well, flying in from Ireland and across Britain, and while it was a celebration of his life, it was still a funeral and still a very sombre and very sad."

Simon 'Simey' Doherty is survived by his wife, 15 children and many grandchildren.

Paddy Doherty attends a show of support at court for fellow Traveller Joe Joyce who is awaiting sentence for murder conviction

Joe Joyce who is due to be sentenced for the murder of John Paul McDonagh

TV personality Paddy Doherty attended a show of support outside Laganside Courts yesterday for fellow Traveller Joe Joyce.

Joyce appeared at Belfast Crown Court via a videolink with Maghaberry where he was told he'll be sentenced for five charges - including murder - at the end of this month.

The 32-year old was handed a life sentence in June after he was found guilty by a jury of murdering John Paul McDonagh.

Mr McDonagh (18) sustained a fatal wound to his lower leg during a street battle outside Ennskillen home of Joyce in April 2020.

Michelle O’Neill: Casement Park decision “deeply disappointing and a missed opportunity”

Joyce made the case he was acting in self defence and was protecting himself, his family and his Coolcullen Meadow home from an attack by the three brothers, who were armed with a knife, bottle and garden spade.

However, the jury rejected Joyce's claims and found him guilty of murdering Mr McDonagh with a slash hook.

He was back in court yesterdat, via a videolink with Maghaberry, where it emerged a tariff hearing will be held on September 30 to determine how long he will serve in prison.

Before the hearing took place, a crowd of around 200 people gathered outside the court in support of Joyce and his appeal against conviction, which has been formally lodged.

Wearing t-shirts and carrying banners bearing the message 'Justice for Joe', the supporters included Joyce's parents Joe and Alice, his wife Ellen and their three children, and Paddy Doherty.

The high-profile Traveller, who appeared in Reality TV shows including Celebrity Big Brother and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, has backed the appeal launched by Joyce.

He said: "What happened was a terrible, terrible, terrible tragedy. There's no good saying it wasn't because it was.

"I didn't know the other young fella, God rest his soul, but I know Joe.

"What happened was manslaughter, not murder. Murder's like a different level. What he did that day, he was protecting himself, his home, his pregnant wife and his kids.

"It blew out of proportion. It snowballed, but what's happening now is just wrong."

Mr Doherty also revealed he is backing the appeal and said: "It was a terrible thing that happened and I'm so so sorry for the young boy, but Joe didn't mean to kill anybody. I've never seen Joe with a weapon before in my life."

A relative also travelled from England to support Joyce.

Paul Joyce, a cousin of the defendant, said:

"A young boy lost his life but at the same time Joe doesn't deserve to go to prison for the rest of his life when he was acting in self defence."

Joyce will be sentenced on Friday September 30 for murdering Mr McDonagh, wounding his brother Gerard, possessing two offences weapons - namely the slash hook and bottle of ammonia - and causing an affray.

The teenage lives of two Irish Traveller brothers who became fashion world sensations (Picture: Perry Ogden/Paddy & Liam)

These fascinating images document the faces of two brothers from one of Ireland’s remote Traveller communities.

Award-winning photographer and film-maker Perry Ogden’s new book Paddy & Liam follows the lives of two brothers through their teenage years and into adulthood.

Paddy and Liam Doran’s story is focused around the community where they live in a council house in Celbridge, Co Kildare, near Dublin.

Both the young men, now 17 and 16, have been photographed in some of the world’s best known fashion brands including Fred Perry, Burberry and H&M.

The photographer, whose work has appeared in numerous magazines around the world including Italian Vogue, was inspired by the pair after ‘seeing something in the two of them’.

Ogden said: ‘I have always been interested in Traveller culture and started photographing them a number of years ago.

‘Later, I thought these images would make a very interesting book documenting that period of time from age 10 – 16, which is such a transformative period in your life, a time when you are making discoveries and developing passions.

‘I also wanted to reflect on the Ireland they were born into and the Ireland in which they are becoming adults.’

Partly due to Ogden’s influence, the brothers have now gained a successful modelling career in the last few months.

In the new book the boys are photographed alone in the wild Irish landscape. They are often pictured with horses or dogs.

Accompanying each image is commentary from the boys.

Some of the photographs in the book show Paddy and Liam hunting with their dogs.

One of the captions reads: ‘We been hunting now for six or seven years. We go anywhere where there’s rabbits.

‘Every night we go out we come back with at least three or four. Sometimes when the dog gets very tired I put a collar on Liam.’

Other shots show more tender moments like Liam posing with a tiny kitten in 2012.

British photographer Perry Ogden has spent much of his career documenting Ireland’s Traveller communities.

His work includes his 1999 work Pony Kids and an award-winning documentary Pavee Lackeen (The Traveller Girl).

Perry Ogden ’s Paddy & Liam   was released on 16 March and is published by IDEA .

Peter Kennedy’s Irish Traveller Recordings

Hello folks, I’m writing this in reference to this old discussion: https://thesession.org/discussions/22992 Peter Kennedy released those three cassettes of recordings he made of Irish Travellers on his folktrax label. Among the people he recorded were Mary & Paddy Doran, both of which I recently got to hear on Topic’s “Voice of the People” series which got me interested in looking for more recordings of these two singers. That’s how I found this website… Well, I really like Mary Doran’s singing style and I would absolutely love to hear the recordings Peter Kennedy made of her, especially “Blackwaterside”, which became so popular in the Folk revival, and “When I Was In Horseback”, a very beautiful and rather unusual fragment of the old Irish street ballad “The Unfortunate Rake”. The problem is, Folktrax is gone and I have no idea where I could else get those cassettes. I was hoping that maybe someone here on thesession still has those mp3 files which were uploaded in that older discussion three years ago and would be willing to re-upload them for me. Or, if that’s not an option, perhaps someone happens to know a place where I could still buy the cassettes? It is a shame that these important and impressive field recordings have never been reissued. They really should be made available to a wider audience…

Re: Peter Kennedy’s Irish Traveller Recordings

try Scutcher. he is a helpful sort

I already asked him, but he was unable to re-upload the files, so I created this discussion, hoping that someone else would be able to help me out. I know, it comes of as rather unmannered and egoistic that I’m asking other people to do something for me for which they get nothing in return but a written thank you, but this seems to be my only chance to get those recordings. I am not the kind of person who demands to have things for free which others have to pay for, honestly, it’s just that there is absolutely no way of buying the “Irish Tinker Singers” (No offense intended, that’s what PK called them) cassettes anywhere now that folktrax is no more, otherwise I would’ve bought them already…

I still have those mp3 files on my hard drive. Could send them to you with “We Transfer”if I had your email address. If not I will find some other way to send them. Send me an email.

No problem, I’ll give you my e-mail address via PM! I can’t thank you enough for doing this, that’s super kind of you!

Hello Paddy, I hope, after all these years, your hard drive still has those MP3 files. Because I hope you can help me out with a MP3 file of the 1952 Peter Kennedy recordings of “Blackwaterside” by Mary Doran and/or Winnie Ryan. I would be very grateful to you. Joop greets from The Netherlands (Europe)

Hi Joop, I still have those mp3’s of the three cassettes someplace, I will do a search later and will send them on to you by “Wetransfer”. Paddy(Wexford, Ireland)

will need your email address

Hello Paddy, I will send you the E-mail via message. Thank you very much in advance. Joop greets

Hello Paddy, This is more than I expected. Wonderful, wonderful. Rounder or Topic has to release these recordings asas. Joop greets

English folkies of a certain age [like me] will probably remember Steeleye Span’s 70’s version of ‘When I was on Horseback’, sounds like they almost certainly got it from Mary Doran. Another version of a genre of songs that ended up in the US as St James Infirmary/Dying Crapshooter Blues.
