Introduction

datia palace

Datia is a small city in northern Madhya Pradesh, in between Jhansi and Gwalior cities of Central India. It lies in Madhya Pradesh state and is popular for its heritage tourism attractions like fort, palace, temples and monuments. Datia city lies in Datia district which is a small district in the state. It is bounded by Bhind district in north, Gwalior district in north-west and Shivpuri district in south-west. Its eastern border is with Uttar Pradesh. While traveling from Jhansi or Orchha to Gwalior, we will pass through Datia in both modes of transport i.e. by road and train. It is a historical township whose reference comes in Hindu epic book “Mahabharata” by referring to its ruler King Dantavakra. Famous Jain pilgrimage site “Sonagiri” is just 15 kms from Datia. Just like Orchha, Datia was also ruled by Bundela rulers thus we will find similarity in art and culture of Orchha and Datia. This region is mainly rural and backward as land is not so fertile thus agricultural productivity is also average but because of its strategic location on the trade route of Bundelkhand to Malwa which further goes to Gujarat ports, Datia maintained its importance and remained in the preference list of trade communities. Being a small city and surrounded by some large historical cities like Gwalior, Jhansi, Orchha, tourism popularity of Datia is overshadowed by them. As these big names are not so far from each other thus Datia was always treated as just an enroute destination, use for small stopover also which is an injustice with this magnificent historical township.

There are many folds of Datia history. If we go back to Mahabharata period, almost 5000 years back, this region was prominently dominated by Chedi Kingdom under the rule of Shishupala. Chedi Kingdom was spread over large area of Bundelkhand. In the same time, their was a small Karusha Kingdom, adjoining Chedi whose King Dantavakra was a supporter of Chedi Kingdom. Its reference also comes in the Ashokan rock inscription at Gujarra. Information of that period is unavailable thus now a days, Datia history is traced back to year 1626 when it was founded by Rao Bhagwan Rao , son of Bundela king Bir Singh Deo. Before this period, Datia was just a village, used as for stopover. Rao Bhagwan Das ruled from 1626 to 1642. During Bundela rule, Datia was divided into four tehsils i.e. Datia, Seondha, Indragarh and Nadigaon. It was the time when Mughal rule came in the hand of Shahjahan who maintained good relations with Bundela rulers. After Rao Bhagwan Das, Rao Subhkaran (1642-1678) became ruler of Datia and continued to maintain good relations with Mughal emperor. He assisted Aurangzeb in Deccan military expeditions. Later ruled by Rao Dalpat (1678 - 1707). Throughout his life he maintained good relations with Mughals and died in year 1707, while participating in the war of succession for Mughal throne. After death Rao Dalpat, Rao Ramchandra Singh became the new ruler (1707 - 1733). Later rulers ruled of Datia but till this time, its importance has been reduced and British forces were emerged as new power in this region. It came under British rule through Treaty of Bassein, in year 1802. At the end we would like to update you about association of “The Great Gama” wrestler with Datia. During the rule of Maharaja Bhawani Singh, Gama was bought to Datia for training and sponsorship. His training equipments are still available in Datia fort.

Culture & Heritage

A town of great historic significance, Datia’s seven-storeyed palace built entirely of stone and brick by Raja Bir Singh Deo in 1614, is considered to be one of the finest examples of Bundela architecture in the country. Within the palace are some fine wall paintings of the Bundela school. An interesting blending of cultures can be seen in the frescoes in a temple. Datia takes its name from Dantavakra, a mythological demon ruler of the area. The palaces at Datia and Orchha are the best surviving examples of the Bundelkhand style of architecture that arose in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in the Bundelkhand area under the reign of the Bundela Rajputs.

It was built in 1620 by King Bir Singh Deo after whom the palace is named. Locally, the palace is also known as Govind Mandir.Erected on a rocky ridge, the Bir Singh Palace has five stories with a central dome rising to 35m caps the palace. Suites of underground rooms hewn from solid bedrock on a series of different levels provide hot-weather accommodation. The palace has a square plan with a domed tower at each corner. The main entrance is on the eastern side, while the south opens out to a lake, the Karna Sagar. This palace is made entirely of stones and bricks without any use of wood and iron. Another five-storeyed structure with apartments for the royalty stands in the central courtyard. It is connected by flying bridge corridors to the middle of each side. The facades are decorated with bracketed balconies, kiosks, arcades and wide eaves which create a glorious play of light and shade. Strangely enough, for all its mesmerizing beauty, the palace was never occupied and is now a well-preserved monument with unusual persian style motifs. In fact many of the ceilings inside the palace have borders and medallions which resemble the rare carpets from Persia.

The Chhatris

The royal families of Datia built Chhatris to commemortae their dead. These are decorated with elaborate memorials with stories, myths and legends from the holy scriptures , somrtimes they also have a depiczion of the great deeds of those remembered. There is a hige complex of Chhatris built in the 18th and 19th centuries and really worth a visit.

  • Orchha was founded in the 16th century by Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap
  • Ram Raja temple is the only place where Lord Ram is worshipped both as a God and as a King
  • The Laxmi Narayan temple exhibits a unique architectural style, which is a mix of a fort and a temple
  • The famed Chhatris of Orchha are Cenotaphs that were constructed in honour of its erstwhile rulers

Exhibiting the wonderful Bundela-era legends, Orchha remains steadfast as the major historical site that has maintained the culture and legends of the rulers of the Bundela dynasty. Chieftain Rudra Pratap Singh founded Orchha on a piece of land along the Betwa river. This amazing town will fascinate you during your adventure, as it is a perfect destination to tour with friends and family. There are so many historical places to visit in Orchha and it is well connected to almost all the major towns of Madhya Pradesh.

Places To Visit in Orchha

Rudra Pratap Singh, the Rajput king of Orchha, started the construction of the Raj Mahal during the 16th century. However, the work of completing the structure was eventually taken up by the successors of Rudra Pratap Singh, the most popular of whom was Madhukar Shah.

It is a square structure in which two wings have five floors on three sides and four floors on one side. The bedrooms of four queens are constructed to the right of the Private audience's hall. The Cabin of the emperor is at the front, at the same level as the Sanctum of the Chatturbhuj Mandir. The ceiling of the royal chamber has been delicately painted with vibrant colours. Many other paintings, illustrating scenes from Ramayana and the glory of Bundela Court are hung on the walls of the palace. Beautifully stone-carved grills give the palace a majestic royal look and the angle shaft allows natural air and light continuously flow through the rooms. There are parts of the palace which have been converted into a Heritage Hotel called Sheesh Mahal, open for the tourists to stay while they explore the sites of Orchha. The interior of the palace is decorated with fragments of mirrors and includes lavish royal accommodation. These marvellous architectures stand tall inside the Orchha fort complex and enthrall its visitors.

Laxmi Narayan Temple

The history of the temple goes back to the Bundela dynasty. This temple is a square structure built by King Veer Singh Deo in 1622. The outer walls of the temple have the window like carvings and they are topped with battlements. The courtyard is surrounded by walls with galleries that run throughout them and are open to the sky. A hall is located in front of the octagonal sanctum in the centre of the courtyard. The murals that cover the galleries and vaulted roofs are the most artistic feature of the Laxminarayan Temple. The temple has some beautiful paintings on the upper part of the walls. The subjects of the paintings are particularly unusual than that of other paintings in the temple. While some of them illustrate episodes from the Ramayana, and of Lord, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, others depict mythical, martial and secular scenes. There is an outstanding painting of the 'Chungi Chirya', the giant bird that could fly high with an elephant in its claws.

There are fifteen cenotaphs honouring the Bundela kings and other members of their family on the right bank of the Betwa River in the south. The platform on which the chhatris rise as well as the sanctum are square in shape. The cremated remains of the royal princes and princesses are kept in the sanctums. A marble statue of Madhukar Shah and his wife with a painted canopy can be found in the first chhatri. The last chhatri in the line that can be seen from the riverbank is precisely square in structure which is built to honour Veer Singh Deo.

Chaturbhuj Temple

The design of the temple is unique in terms of architecture when compared to other structures in Orchha. The dome of the temple is not ribbed but smooth like that of a mosque. The court of the temple is open to the sky and it also has rising towers resembling the Chhatris of the Bundelas. There is a statue of four armed, that is Chaturbhuj, Vishnu inside the temple. It stands on a pedestal which gives the statue a majestic appearance.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal was built in the 17th century by the Bundela ruler, Veer Singh Deo. It was constructed to honour the first visit of Emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The entry of the palace is marked with a traditional and aesthetic gate. The east-facing front wall of the palace is covered with turquoise tiles. At the entrance, two stone elephants greet you with a bell that marks the entry of the King of that period.

It is believed that this palace is the epitome of Indo-Islamic architecture. The domes have engravings of external ribs which contrasts with the internal carving of the Islamic style. The brackets of the windows are made in a wavy style, following Jain architecture. It is impressively decorated with light-coloured ceramic tiles. This three-storied building has some amazing sculptures, beautiful balconies, Chhatris and beautifully carved-topped domes that reflect its architectural brilliance.

Shri Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as the King rather than a god. It is also known as Orchha Temple. Shri Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is beautifully painted in hues of white, pink, and yellow.

The legend behind the temple is as vivid as its walls.Madhukar Shah Ju Dev, the ruler of Orchha, was a follower of Lord Krishna, while his wife, Queen Ganesh Kunwari, was a follower of Lord Rama. The Queen once refused the King's request to accompany him to Braj-Mathura because she preferred to go to Ayodhya. The King insisted and invited her to follow him. However, the Queen declined. The monarch was annoyed over this and instructed her to return only when she would be bringing Lord Rama along. When the Queen arrived in Ayodhya, she began to pray to Lord Rama, but the lord did not show up. She finally jumped into the Saryu River at midnight out of desperation. In response to the Queen's prayers and devotion, Lord Rama manifested himself as a child in her lap.Three conditions were set forth by Lord Rama before he decided to leave, "I will travel exclusively in Pushya Nakshatra so that he reaches Orchha with sages; second, Once we reach Orchha, I shall be the King of Orchha; and third, the first place you seat me will be my final place to stay," lord instructed.

When the King came to know that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But in line with Lord Rama's requirements, he assumed the first position and sat down. Thus, the name Ram Raja Temple has remained attached to the queen's palace to this day. When the King learned that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But according to Lord Rama's conditions, he took the first place where he was seated. Thus, from that day to today, the queen's palace is known as Ram Raja Temple.
