Control Room B

Good to know

Unique and quirky, Control Room B is the newest addition to Battersea Power Station and is bringing an exciting, immersive experience to the local dining scene. It is opening as one of the new projects in the £9 billion Battersea Power Station redevelopment which joins eight other restaurants and a new Arcade Food Hall from hospitality giants JKS.

Although, Control Room B does not have to try very hard to stand out. It is inspired by the spots original purpose as a control room in the power station which, alongside the aptly named control room A, coordinated an output of electricity that served across London in the 1950s. The bar has been designed to replicate the original control room with control desks, switch dials and a central bar said to be inspired by turbines.

The immersive concept comes from The Inception Group (the same team behind the likes of Mr Fogg's and Bunda Bunda) and is a real nod to the original usage. It mimicks the old control room with its brutalist, steel and ceramic style as well as with its staff who serve dressed in white boiler suits that place them in character as engineers.

Opening at 10am daily, the bar welcomes the public as well as the development's residents to experience the control room and feast on pastries alongside teas and coffees. Heading into the evening, the menu switches to include cocktails that are inspired by the control room theme. Ten premium cocktails are mixed by the engineers and served up in miniature Battersea Power Station vessels as well as stainless steel martini glasses.

Guests will be able to drink cocktails late into the night as well as snacking on a menu of light bites that are perfect for sharing in a group. Whatever time of the day and whatever occasion, Control Room B provides a unique and innovative background for entertaining and soaking up the historic surroundings.

Control Room B Bar, Battersea Power Station

Control Room B Bar, Battersea Power Station has been carefully curated by Ellis Design Studio as an atmospheric, conceptual space which fuses utilitarian beauty with the joy and optimism of post war, mid-century British design.

  • Ellis Design Studio
  • area / size 4,500 sqft
  • Location London , England , United Kingdom ,
  • Type Bar / Brewery ,

Multi-award-winning Interior Designers, Ellis Design Studio have designed a spectacular new cocktail bar within Control Room B of at the very heart of the newly redeveloped Battersea Power Station. Battersea Power Station is a Grade II* listed, global architectural icon and one of London’s most recognisable landmarks.

Control Room B originally helped supply power to some of London’s most recognisable landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. The spectacular new bar venue comprises 4,500sqft and is set amongst the panels of historic dials and switches of the original Control Room.

Control Room B was completed in 1955 as a counterpart to the original Control Room A, built in the 1930’s. The Control Room was built in the austere Modernist style of the post-war period and the space is defined by the dramatic arc of the original stainless steel control desk, set against a backdrop of full height switchgear racks. The walls and octagonal columns feature original faience tiles in a delicate pale blue, contrasting against the beautifully brutalist machine aesthetic of the control panels.

The original Control Room fittings and switchgear are defining features of the space and have been fully restored as part of the regeneration of the Power Station. The iconic dials & switches have previously formed the backdrop to famous movie scenes and album covers, from the Beatles film Help to rock band Hawkweed’s album Quark.

The space has been arranged in a circular configuration, inspired by both the arched form of the existing historic stainless steel control desks and by the radial forms of the original Power Station turbine blades.

The design for the bar involved the creation of a spectacular turbine-inspired, metallic sculptural centrepiece, paying tribute to the character and form of Battersea Power Station’s electric, industrial history. An illuminated radial metal canopy adorned with delicately perforated metal fins encircles an existing central column, lending a sense of energy, movement and permeability.

The design of the bar, with its radial canopy, seeks to capture the forms and momentum of the original power station turbines. The semi-circular sweep of arced feature lights to the outer edge of the bar is designed to suggest the capturing of a moment in time between rotational movements, thereby creating a sense of tension, anticipation and dynamism. Amber hued, domed textured lights to the bar front are suggestive of the viewing portholes into the original coal furnaces, which powered the turbines.

The materiality of the design scheme paid homage to the machine-age aesthetic, using aged brass, blackened & lacquered steels and various patinated & pleated metals, set against warm-hued, custom laser-printed timbers.

Furniture and upholstery selections were informed by mid-century patterns & pastel hued palettes, providing a softer juxtaposition to the coolness of the original metals and tiles within the space.

Battersea Power Station

BPS Unveils Fully Restored Control Room B

Today Battersea Power Station has unveiled the newly restored Control Room B, with a sneak peek of London’s most unique all-day bar experience opening in 2022.

Once open to the public late next summer, Control Room B will be an all-day hospitality concept, transforming into an intimate bar in the evening – it will have a modern and contemporary feel with a respectful nod to its 1950s industrial character. The restored control panels will be on display creating a unique backdrop, photo opportunity and conversation starter.

At its peak, Battersea Power Station produced a fifth of London’s power, supplying electricity to some of London’s most recognisable landmarks, such as the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. Working in tandem with Control Room A, Control Room B managed the distribution of power generated by the Power Station’s turbines. Functionally Control Room B can be divided into two sets of controls. The control desk and freestanding controls synchronised the 66kV output of the station to match the standards of the grid, while the switchgear racks at the rear of the room controlled the power supplies to a range of auxiliary equipment across the power station.

Control Room B opens directly onto Turbine Hall B, in contrast to the 1930s Control Room A which was a separate room – this maybe evidence of developments in the management methods at that time. As it was built after the Second World War, it is more brutalist in design. It has faience tiling throughout and retains its original human scale stainless-steel control panels arranged in an arc. The original control room fittings, desks and switchgear complex are defining features of the space and have been fully restored as part of the wider regeneration of Battersea Power Station.

Simon Murphy, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said:

“We are creating one of the most unique all-day bar experiences in London which will naturally become a centrepiece for Turbine Hall B. For the very first time in history, guests will be able to see the historic Control Room B in all its glory, sit back with a coffee or cocktail and soak up the breath-taking views of this heritage landmark that has finally been restored after years of lying derelict. When it opens late next Summer, it will not only be a great venue for socialising with friends and family or an impressive date night setting, it will also make the perfect backdrop for ‘that’ photo opportunity.”

Once completed, Battersea Power Station will be one of the most exciting retail and leisure destinations in London, having recently announced that major international brands such as Ray-Ban, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, The Kooples, Aēsop and Calvin Klein will be opening inside the iconic building. The Power Station will be home to over 100 shops, bars and restaurants, 254 apartments, office space as well as unique events and leisure offering, including the Chimney Lift Experience. There will also be a new six-acre riverfront park that is open to the public.

The retail and leisure retail experience within the Power Station will be housed in the two newly restored, historic Turbine Halls, which although identical when viewed from the building’s exterior, are completely unique in their interior design. Turbine Hall A reflects the lavish Art Deco glamour of the 1930s when the Power Station was built and Turbine Hall B, where Control Room B is located, was completed in the 1950s and has more of a brutalist, industrial look and feel.

The retail and leisure experience will continue on a new high street, Electric Boulevard, which runs from the south of the Power Station, between the stunning Frank Gehry designed Prospect Place and Foster + Partners’ Battersea Roof Gardens. Electric Boulevard will offer a mix of office space, shops, bars and restaurants, a park, community centre and an exciting new 164 room hotel from art’otel ® , the brand’s first hotel to open in London.

Residents currently living at Battersea Power Station can enjoy a great mix of cafés, bars, and restaurants where they can sample cuisines from all over the world. This includes modern Indian at Vivek Singh’s Cinnamon Kitchen, authentic Italian at Francesco Mazzei’s Fiume, bottomless pizza at celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s Street Pizza and delicious Japanese patisseries and bubble tea at the recently opened Kova, the first of the Power Station’s retailers to open. A variety of entertainment and fitness venues can also be found beneath the railway arches on Arches Lane, including Battersea Brewery, which has its own microbrewery on site, spin studio Boom Cycle, DNA VR, London’s biggest virtual reality arcade, Birdies Crazy Golf, The Cinema in the Arches and The Turbine Theatre.

Battersea Power Station also hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year with highlights including  the Light Festival, Summer Showtime on The Coaling Jetty, London’s first open-air cinema and theatre experience and festive fun at The Winter Village which will be launching on 2 nd December this year.

With the Northern Line extended to give this new riverside neighbourhood its very own Zone 1 London Underground station, Battersea Power Station is now within 15 minutes of the West End and the City and is expected to draw visitors from across the capital and the globe, becoming one of London’s most visited destinations, boosting the local economy and creating over 20,000 jobs.
