Description

Looking to log quality miles on quiet back roads through incredible scenery? Look no further than Quercy and Périgord and our challenging itinerary that includes some of the best-known medieval and prehistoric sites in the region. Highlights include   Les Eyzies ,  Sarlat ,  La Roque Gageac ,  Castlenaud ,  Rocamadour ,  Padirac ,  Carennac , and  Saint-Céré … but this isn’t an exhaustive list! Of course, after a full day of cycling and sightseeing, Périgord and Quercy's  gastronomic heritage  and hearty  culinary specialties  will help you replenish your energy. A memorable trip for body and soul!

This trip is ideal for riders who can comfortably cover  60 miles  and handle  800  to  1,000 meters  of climbing. For an easier alternative, you may want to consider Dordogne's Jewels and Treasures .

For groups of 6 and more, we can customize your itinerary to your liking .

For travel and cycling tips to Dordogne, visit our " Travel and cycling tips " section.

Welcome to  Lacave  where you will be greeted by our local representative.  Lacave  is a pretty town wedged between  Périgord Noir  (Black Périgord) and  Quercy , two areas worth exploring in-depth on a bicycle. Tonight at dinner we suggest you dive right into the regional specialty,  duck !

You'll probably want to take a stroll and explore Lacarve  before getting on your bike. We've kept today's mileage to a low 71 km (44 miles) to allow you to do just that! On your way to  Les Eyzies , the  World Capital of Prehistory , you will ride through typical Périgord villages.

All are rich in remarkable sites:  Salignac  has a medieval castle,  Saint-Armand-de-Coly  has quite a striking church and  Montignac  is home to the famous Lascaux grotto . (The caves are closed to the public, but you may visit a reproduction tomorrow morning if you wish and time allows.

There is also a medium option available (78 km/1,010 meters)

You will first ride along the  Vézère River  up to its confluence with the  Dordogne River  — in  Limeuil , a village that bears the coveted title of "One of France's Prettiest Villages" — then you're on to the scenic " Cingle de Trémolat " (Riverbend) and the village of  Cadouin  and its medieval abbey.

From there, riding will be done in a superb landscape of rolling hills and wooded areas.

There is a shorter ride of 53 km available too.

We’ll give you different options to suit your personal goals! All options will take you along the Dordogne River to discover some of France's prettiest villages and castles. Among them are  La Roque Gageac ,  Beynac ,  Castelnaud , and  Les Milandes . You’ll also encounter  Périgord's fortified villages  dating back to the Middle Ages:  Belvès ,  Domme , and even  Montpazier , if you choose the longer option.

We've kept today's mileage to a low 56 km (35 miles) to allow you to explore Sarlat's medieval center (the largest in Europe) before setting off on your journey to the  Quercy  area. Today's ride to  Rocamadour  is magnificent from start (don’t miss the viewpoint in  Calès  of the  Ouisse Canyon ) to finish (Rocamadour and its exceptional cliffside setting).

Rocamadour will be your home for the next two nights, a base we’re sure you’ll adore.

A longer option of 78 km is also available.

All options will take you to the castle of  Castelnau ,  Saint-Céré , and the extraordinary cave of  Padirac  and its subterranean river. You will also visit the villages of  Loubressac ,  Autoire , and  Carennac , each of which is categorized as ‘One of France's Prettiest Villages’.

Today's ride will take you through typical Quercy villages ( Meyronne , and  Martel ),  Collonges-la- Rouge , a colorful village built of red sandstones, and — although it may not be designated one of France’s “prettiest,” a picturesque village called  Turenne , which is worth visiting in our opinion. You will lodge for your final night in Lacave , where you started.

There is a shorter route available as well (43 km/27 miles)

After breakfast, depart Lacave  at the time of your choice.

Marine discovers Périgord and Quercy by bike

12 January 2021

Marine on the Dordogne roads

By Marine Hecquard, Travel Advisor in Abicyclette Voyages

At the beginning of autumn, I chose to go on a bike trip, discovering Périgord and Quercy through the Vézère , Dordogne and Célé valleys. Territories renowned for their gastronomy as well as their incredible natural, historical and cultural heritage . The Périgord and Quercy areas are full of many assets. And especially at this time of year. It is true that in the autumn, temperatures gradually drop, as does the light fall. The sun is scarce and often hides behind the clouds. But in addition to its often rainy and humid weather, autumn also offers a resplendent annual spectacle, both visual, through its flamboyant colors, and gustatory, with many local products.

So, equipped with my bike and full panniers, I set off on the hilly roads of Périgord and Quercy.

Black and purple Périgord: through the Vézère and Dordogne valleys by bike

Although I loved the whole trip, the first wheel spins along the Vézère remain one of my favorite memories. Cradle of Prehistory , this valley takes us back in the footsteps of the first men. I discovered many prehistoric sites and fabulous castles. The stream sets the pace for the ride and takes me to the heart of the Périgord Noir. From villages to authentic cities, I visit Montignac, located a few wheel lengths away from the famous caves of Lascaux , or Saint-Léon sur Vézère and Limeuil , two small villages classified among the most beautiful villages in France .

Marine on the Dordogne roads

As drops go by – yes, autumn is here! – I immerse myself a little more in the decor and its relief. I ride between the river and limestone cliffs. The first – small – climb of my trip is exhausting. But the wonderful viewpoint it gives me in return is only the better. The path continues to Eyzies-de-Tayac , where I discover its incredible troglodyte architecture . I fall under the charm!

The crossing of Périgord continues towards Bergerac , capital of purple Périgord, between plains and hills. Since the start of my trip, nature has been omnipresent and impressive. Rivers, oak forests, limestone cliffs, plains, alleys of walnut and chestnut trees accompany my journey. A bucolic route where nature constantly surrounds us. How good it feels to breathe fresh air!

Marine on the Dordogne roads

On the other side of the shore, the course seems more hilly and challenging, but accompanied by many small castles and villages of Perigord. Each one as wonderful as the next: Belvès , Beynac or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle … Then I arrive in Sarlat-la-Canéda , a city full of art and fabulous history where I have the pleasure of getting lost in its cobbled streets.

Beyond these magnificent landscapes and this exceptional heritage, this trip to Périgord and Quercy naturally brings me to meet its inhabitants and its exceptional products. At this time of year, visitors have deserted, giving way to narrow, almost empty alleys where you can enjoy walking. The locals welcome us warmly and kindly share their history and their specialties. A region where life is good , and where there is no shortage of quality products at this time of year. I try nuts, figs, grapes, foie gras, duck confit, goat cheese… so many dishes to (re) compensate the effort made on my bike. Clearly, happiness is everywhere, even on one’s plate!

Marine on the Dordogne roads

Le Quercy: Through the Dordogne and Lot Valley, by the Célé

The entrance to the Lot department is felt by a cooler and more humid climate. The oak forests have given way to a rather dry vegetation, free of trees and bordered by low stone walls.

Although motivation is at its max, each stage is still a bit more tiring than the previous one. But THE long-awaited moment of my trip has arrived: my encounter with Rocamadour ! I don’t know what made me most happy when I reached it:

1 – To admire the beauty of this medieval village,

2 – To have succeeded in reaching it on the strength of my legs.

I’m speechless, the photos will speak for themselves.

Marine on the Dordogne roads

The wonder continues, and particularly between Figeac and Cahors . I decide to reach Cahors on the advice of a Figeac local, via the Célé Valley. Bordered by the river, I advance on undulating and deserted roads, watched over by tall grayish and white cliffs. This last route is relatively flat until the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie . Also a jewel from medieval times. We pause around a hot chocolate, then take the road back to Cahors and its fortified bridge , where my trip ends.

With a little more than 460 kilometers on the counter , I leave captivated, my head is full of memories ( as are my legs ). Despite a few moments of rain, cold and fatigue, I had a smile on my lips throughout the whole trip  … Aren’t these the joys of cycling?

History of the Line

Our track was constructed in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was a part of the main line running between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Over the years millions of riders have experienced the beauty of the Santa Clara River Valley, Hollywood has used this span of rail as a scenic backdrop, and generations have fallen in love with trains.

The track was used extensively by Southern Pacific as late as the 1950s to haul citrus from packing houses at the communities along the Santa Clara River.

Today the Sunburst brings back the romance to this storied line, and takes us into a new millennium with the introduction of our unique Railbikes.

Gift Certificates

Give the gift of a Sunburst railbike experience. A simple card that gives so much. Your recipients can choose their departure day and time, and embark on a fantastic journey of their own through the Ventura countryside.

Finger Lakes Rail Riders

An Upstate New York rail bike company is offering a workout with a historical twist on its rail bike rides—the only one of its kind in the U.S.

Finger Lakes Rail Riders in Penn Yan claims to be the only rail bike company in America which provides a historical narration of the area as you pedal through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Upstate New York’s wine country .

They were also awarded a Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award earlier this year, according to an announcement on their Facebook page .

At FLRR, riders will travel in pairs, with a solo seat option to ride with the guide, along a mostly flat five-mile path . The two-hour excursion includes a 25- to 30-minute narration of Yates County history, delivered with a humorous touch by your guide through a two-way radio on each bike.

Think Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” but Upstate New York style.

Over the course of your journey, you will see working farms, relics from the railroad that was once there, and a one-room Mennonite schoolhouse. Participants are encouraged to ask questions along the way.

Adirondack RailBike Adventures

See rail bike companies across Upstate NY

Rail bikes are a unique way to see the state's beautiful landscapes.

“People can come and ride on existing railroads that have been here since 1851,” founder and owner Kathy Ferron told RochesterFirst. “They can get a little exercise, they can see some beautiful scenery — Yates County is an absolutely spectacular place to see.”

While in the area, visit some of the finest Penn Yan has to offer in the Finger Lakes , including paddling on beautiful Keuka Lake , and not one, but two award-winning ice cream spots, The Spotted Duck and Seneca Farms .

FLRR rides run Sunday through Tuesday and Friday through Saturday from now until October 29. The cost per two-seater bike is $88 and there is no age limit to how young or how old a rider has to be.

One person can pedal for two, as long as their fitness level allows it.

FLRR answers more questions about their rides on their website FAQ page .

Rail bike options have grown over the years, giving some abandoned railroad tracks new life by allowing passengers to travel down them on two or four person machines. There are several companies across Upstate New York which offer different kinds of excursions and experiences. Some even offer pet-friendly rail bike tours.

Day 1: sarlat la canéda - tamniès, day 2: tamniès - montignac, day 3: montignac - thonac - sarlat.

Itinerary start: Rendezvous on the first day is at 10am in front of Sarlat SNCF railway station. We will leave directly from the railway station. Please arrive in your cycle clothing.

Welcome to the Périgord! Our journey begins in the town of Sarlat, capital of the famous "foie gras". The first stage of our trip takes us east, towards the Carluxois (area of Carlux). As we discover, the beautiful countryside of the Périgord is full of dry stone walls and chestnut trees, the latter offering welcome shade from the midday sun. Early in the day we arrive at the first castle of our tour, the Château de Saint Vincent Le Paluel. Destroyed during the Second World War, the remaining ruins testify to the impressive scale of the castle before its destruction. We end the day with a ride through the gardens of the 18th century Eyrignac Manor, typical of the French gardens of the era. The gardens are a mixture of the classic French style and the eccentric style bought about by the Italian Renaissance… We then join our first overnight stop in Tamniès. Night in a hotel.

Distance covered: approx. 30 km / ascent: approx. 700 m

Our route takes us north west, briefly skirting the edge of the Corrèze moorland as we continue our counter clockwise loop around Sarlat. We follow a series of small tracks that wind their way between small lakes, poplar trees and dense forests. We pass through Saint Geniès and the small village of La Chapelle Aubareil at the entrance to the Vézère Valley… before arriving in Montignac. Hotel for the night in Montignac.

Distance covered: approx. 30 km / ascent: approx. 550 m

We are now in the heart of the Périgord Noir, one of the 4 parts of the "Périgord" area (there is also a green, a white and a purple Périgord…). The area is well known for its prehistoric sites (some of which hold a UNESCO world heritage classification), but is also home to some lesser known sites of interest. Travelling by bike we manage to avoid the crowds and make the most of the gems the area has to offer. After a mix of singletrack trails, forest tracks, a few hills and small valleys, we arrive at the cliffs of the Vézère Valley, famous for the discoveries of Cro-Magnon remains and the Lascaux Caves. Our route then takes us on to the village of Valojoulx with its characteristic stone roofs, nestled in the small valley of Turancon. A short climb then takes us to the village of Thonac, and a well-deserved cold drink!

Return by shuttle to Sarlat.

Distance covered: approx. 30 km / ascent: approx. 650 m

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Itinerary end: Separation in Sarlat on the last day at around 4pm.

If you would like to arrive a day early and/or stay on for an extra day after the trip, we can reserve quality hotel accommodation for you in Sarlat la Canéda, a charming medieval town. The old town is particularly impressive with its stone-fronted houses, stone roofs and its maze of streets around the Place de la Liberté. The house of La Boetie, the Saint Sacerdos Cathedral and the Présidial are all well worth a visit...

A short climb then takes us to the village of Thonac, our hotel, and a well-deserved cold drink!

We start the day by visiting the impressive Castrum de Commarque (a fortified castle dating back to the 12th century), former stronghold of the Beynac Dynasty, whose rule was undisputed for over two hundred years. The flowing singletrack trails of the first couple of days give way to more technical trails, which give way in turn to larger tracks of yellow limestone, offering the opportunity to take our eyes off the trail and enjoy the scenery. We reach the village of Meyrals, where numerous artists and painters have taken up residence, giving the village a festive and friendly feel. The village’s Romanesque church and priory are well worth a visit. After Meyrals we find ourselves on a plateau lodged between the two valleys of the Vézère and the Dordogne, with good views of the latter from above the village of Saint Cyprien. We join Marquay on a series of undulating trails bordered by chestnut and oak forests, typical of mountain biking in the Périgord…
