I would like info on two weeks in Molokai next February. There was an older motel on the beach. All the rooms were on poles off the ground. I belong to the Molokai Veterans Association.

Please consider me and my significant other. I have been hoping to get away with him for about 3 years now but something has always kept us from being able to travel together. Hawaii ha, and still is, my choice of a trip away. 1, because I love the experience I have had alone. But mainly because we as a couple have never been away with one another. First it was the pandemic so I had to cancel a trip I was planning for us. Then we got pregnant back to back. So now we have 3 children and have never traveled alone, or as a family. A trip to any Island would be everything to me, and for us. I thank you for reading this and giving me some slight hope that we could be winners.

4. Odds: Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received.

Prize(s): One (1) Grand-Prize winner will receive a trip to Antarctica which includes: (a) A booking for the prize winner and a guest (2 people total) on Intrepid Travel’s Best of Antarctica trip, dependent on availability (details outlined here:  https://www.intrepidtravel.com/antarctica/best-antarctica-130200 )  (ARV: $25,000 USD) (“Intrepid Tour”). Airfare excluded. 

Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”): Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($25,000 USD). The ARV represents Sponsor’s good-faith determination of the approximate retail value of the Prize in U.S. dollars, and may differ from the actual fair market value. The actual fair market value is determined by Sponsor, is final and binding, and may not be challenged or appealed. If the ARV of a prize exceeds the actual fair market value of the Prize, the difference will not be awarded to winner in cash or otherwise. 

Winner and any guest of winner must travel on the same Intrepid Travel tour itinerary, on departure dates available by Intrepid Travel, and must possess valid identification and all necessary documents for travel including passport and visas. Winner must have a valid passport for travel with at least two (2) empty pages and six (6) months' validity after the date of departure. Winner must schedule tour through Intrepid Travel and the tour is subject to all booking conditions, requirements, and restrictions established by Intrepid Travel. Intrepid Tour must have four (4) confirmed passengers on a specific departure date prior to winner confirming their spot. Winner must respond to correspondence confirming prize claim within 14 days, and Intrepid Tour must be confirmed and booked by 30 September 2021 for travel departing by 29 December, 2021. Winner will not be awarded additional compensation if winner travels without an eligible guest. Guests must be aged 18 or over; eligibility is determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion. 

No changes to travel arrangements will be permitted once any element of the Prize-related travel is booked. Sponsor will not replace any lost or stolen tickets, travel vouchers, or certificates once delivered to winner (or winner’s guest). Prize-related travel may be subject to capacity controls, availability, blackout dates, and other restrictions. 

Any unclaimed and/or unused portion of the Prize will be forfeited upon travel completion and will remain the property of Sponsor. No refund or compensation will be made if a flight is cancelled or delayed. Travel is subject to Intrepid Travel's terms and conditions located at  https://www.intrepidtravel.com/booking-intrepid/booking-conditions  and Safe Travels policies located at  https://www.intrepidtravel.com/safe-travels   

Intrepid Tour does not include spending money, travel taxes, trip kitties, and any costs related to travel insurance, passports, visas, vaccinations, transfers and all other ancillary costs (as well as the costs of obtaining any of these). All such costs and matters are the responsibility of the winner. 

Prize details not specifically described are at Sponsor’s sole discretion. The Prize excludes, and winner is solely responsible for, any costs or fees incurred by winner or winner's guest during Prize-related travel that are not specified in the Official Rules as part of the Prize, including but not limited to: applicable taxes, fuel/currency surcharges, airport transfer transportation fees not included in trip itinerary, additional meals and alcoholic beverages, other than described herein, room service, gratuities, merchandise, telephone calls, medical and travel insurance together with any necessary travel documentation including passports and visas, as applicable and to comply with any customs and immigration requirements, and all personal expenses of any kind or nature, together with any applicable overnight layover. Winner is solely responsible for all costs incurred to and from the departure point as the trip portion of the Prize originates and terminates there. 

Winner should consult a physician prior to travel to determine the advisability of immunizations and inoculations that may be appropriate. Winner is required to obtain medical insurance prior to departure and it is recommended that winner obtains sufficient personal insurance prior to departure. 

The Intrepid Tour provided must be accepted as awarded, there are no substitutions. There is no cash alternative for the Prize, in whole or in part. The Prize is non-transferable and non-exchangeable. No compensation, refunds, or alternatives will be offered due to a winner's inability to attend, claim, or use the Prize. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater monetary value for any Prize. In no event shall the Sponsor be obligated to award more prizes than the number of Prize(s) stated in these Official Rules. 

If winner and/or winner’s guest engages or has engaged in behavior that is obnoxious, threatening, disruptive, inappropriate, illegal, or acts with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other person, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify winner and to immediately terminate any outstanding portion of the Prize without further compensation. 

7. Winner Selection: Sponsor will use a computer-generated randomizer to select one (1) Grand Prize Winner from the entries received during the Sweepstakes Period (or, for mail entries, received by the date indicated above) on 24 August 2021. If there is a dispute regarding the identity of the winner, the registered account holder of the email account used to submit the winning entry will be deemed the winner, subject to such owner’s compliance with the Official Rules.  Sponsor reserves the right to deliver Prize(s) to the email or mailing address supplied by the winner at the time of entry. 

8. Winner Notification and Acceptance Requirements: Sponsor will contact winner(s) by email account used by winner to enter, or, for entries received by mail, the mailing address if no email address is provided. Sponsor is not liable for a winner’s failure or inability to receive communications sent by Sponsor to the contact information provided.  To receive the Prize, the winner must: (a) respond to Sponsor within five (5) business days of initial contact to confirm eligibility; and (b) sign and return an affidavit or declaration of eligibility, IRS Form W-9 (if requested), and liability and publicity release (together, “Winner Paperwork”) to Sponsor within five (5) business days of Sponsor’s delivery. 

A winner may be disqualified for: failure to timely respond to Sponsor’s notification, failure to timely complete and return the Winner Paperwork, failure to meet the Eligibility Requirements at the time of entry, failure to comply with the Official Rules, and/or failure to comply with applicable laws and regulations, each as determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion. All winner privileges shall immediately terminate upon disqualification.  If a winner is disqualified, Sponsor may select an alternative winner (up to a maximum of two alternates). No alternate winner will be drawn if a Prize is time-sensitive. 

Normal time, toll, connection, and usage rates charged by your Internet Service Provider may apply.  Winner(s) are responsible for all federal, state, and local taxes on the value of the Prize. Winner(s) may receive from an IRS form 1099-MISC at the end of the calendar year, a copy of which form will also be filed with the Internal Revenue Service. 

Unless prohibited by applicable law, winner’s acceptance of a Prize constitutes winner’s irrevocable permission for Sponsor and each Sweepstakes Partner to use winner’s name, address, biographical information, likeness, and testimonial for advertising or publicity purposes regarding the Sweepstakes, on a worldwide basis and in all forms of media known or unknown, without further compensation. 

9. General Terms: Sponsor may disqualify any individual or void any entry if the entrant corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Sweepstakes.  This includes, for example, the use of computer ‘script,’ ‘macro,’ or ‘brute force,’ masking identities by manipulating IP addresses, or using any automated means to enter the Sweepstakes. 

Sponsor may disqualify any individual or void any entry if the entrant uses a username or email address that belongs to or is already being used by another person, whether actual or fictitious, that may be interpreted as impersonating another person, or violating the rights of any person. 

Incomplete, illegal, misdirected, untimely, or invalid entries will not be accepted.  Proof of sending is not proof of delivery. Releasees (defined below) take no responsibility for delayed, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, misdirected, damaged, or lost entries due to technical reasons or otherwise. 

If the Sweepstakes cannot be run or be administered as planned, for reasons outside of Sponsor’s control, Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, modify, or suspend the Sweepstakes (subject to any written directions given under applicable law) by posting a notice on the Sweepstakes entry page. Sponsor further reserves the right to modify, cancel, or suspend the Sweepstakes if Sponsor believes doing so is necessary to maintain the integrity of the Sweepstakes or fairness to entrants.  Sponsor will not be liable for a delay or failure to perform its obligations if caused by an act, omission, event, or circumstance beyond Sponsor’s reasonable control. 

This Sweepstakes is governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without reference to its conflict of laws principle.  By entering the Sweepstake, you irrevocably consent to exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the federal and state courts of New York and waive the right to have disputes arising out of the subject matter hereof adjudicated in other forum. In no event, will you be entitled to injunctive relief or equitable relief of any kind, or restrain the continuation of any Sweepstake.

11. Risks; Warranties; Release of Claims: Your participation in the Sweepstakes is at your own risk. Releasees do not make, and hereby disclaim, all implied warranties of any kind relating to the Prize, including warranties of fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and noninfringement, or any representations regarding the function or operation of the Prize. 

12. Release: By entering the Sweepstakes, you agree to release and hold Sponsor, each Sweepstakes Partner, and each of their parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotion agencies, partners, representatives, agents, successors, assigns, employees, officers, and directors (collectively, the “Releasees”) harmless from any liability, illness, injury, death, loss, litigation, claim, or damage directly or indirectly relating to (i) the provision, hosting, sponsorship, administration, suspension, or cancellation of the Sweepstakes, (ii) a person’s ability or inability to enter or participate in the Sweepstakes, including those arising from technical failures, third-party telecommunication outages, or other force majeure events, (iii) any determination of disqualification or other decision made by Sponsor in its sole discretion, (iv) your ability to win, claim, or use a Prize, or to otherwise participate in any activity relating to the Sweepstakes, (v) the Prize itself, or your use or misuse of a Prize, and/or (vi) electronic or human error, or events arising from the simple negligence of one or more Releasees.

Northeast Stars Secure 11U NTIS Gold With Tight Win Over South Stripes

CARY, N.C. – Jack McCloskey pitched 5.2 strong innings and Jack Carson was a force offensively as the Northeast Stars took down the South Stripes, 4-3, in the gold medal game of the 11U National Team Identification Series (NTIS) Champions Cup.

Coming off a dramatic semifinal win over the Southwest Stars just an hour before, the Northeast kept its foot on the gas to score two runs in the bottom of the first in the gold medal bout. Carson reached base and scored on a double steal, and Leonard Stephens III came home shortly after on a throwing error to go up 2-0 early on.

The South Stripes, who also had a tight semifinal victory in the morning–beating the South Stars–almost answered immediately in the top of the second. But with two outs, catcher Logan May erased a would-be base stealer to keep the Northeast in front by two.

That momentum carried over into the bottom of the second as the Northeast doubled its lead. With two runners in scoring position, Carson drilled a two-run single into right field to give the Stripes a 4-0 advantage.

McCloskey, who got the start shortly after securing a save in the semifinals, kept the South Stripes off the board until the bottom of the fourth when the Stripes put together a huge rally to nearly tie the game. The squad loaded the bases with nobody out and finally cracked the scoreboard on an RBI fielder’s choice by Declan Cretti. A balk followed shortly after to trim the Stripes’ deficit to two runs, and Carlos Guerra then hammered an RBI single to make it 4-3 in the fourth before McCloskey stopped the bleeding to stay in front.

The pitchers exchanged zeroes over the next couple of frames, setting up for a dramatic finish in the late innings. The Stripes got a leadoff baserunner in the sixth and knocked McCloskey out of the game, but reliever Jaxson May entered out of the Northeast bullpen to keep the one-run lead intact.

May returned to the mound in the top of the seventh, looking for three more outs to secure the save. Mason Fortman led off for the South with an opposite-field single to put the tying run on base, and a groundout advanced him to second. After another groundout put Fortman on third base with two outs, May coaxed a pop up to shortstop for the final out to give the Northeast its first gold medal of the 2024 NTIS Champions Cup.

It's the second all-time gold medal at the 11U NTIS Champions Cup for the Northeast, as the region also secured the title in 2022.

In the bronze medal game, the Southwest Stars beat the South Stars, 6-2, to nab the Southwest’s seventh all-time medal at the 11U level. It is the second time in five summers that the Southwest has earned an 11U bronze.

Evie Wyld is one of the few Australian writers to win both the Miles Franklin and the Stella Prizes (the Miles for All the Birds, Singing, and the Stella for The Bass Rock). She is drawn to the paranormal and gothic in her fiction and this atmosphere imbues her new book, The Echoes , which is partly narrated by a ghost. Evie shares her go to writing tip (yes, it has to do with sharks) and the appeal of the TV series Neighbours when she was growing up in England.

Catherine McKinnon is a playwright, literary critic and novelist. Her second novel Storyland was shortlisted for the 2018 Miles Franklin. Catherine's third book, To Sing of War , is set during World War II and asks what makes this war different. It's a braided story that threads multiple perspectives from characters in different places, including the Australians fighting against the Japanese in New Guinea and those developing of the atomic bomb in New Mexico, USA.

Big Time is the debut novel from Australian screenwriter-turned novelist Jordan Prosser . It's a band road trip story set in a futuristic, fascist Australia where a popular drug gives users a glimpse of their future.

August is Australian Poetry Month and to celebrate Radio National is bringing you brand new poems commissioned by Red Room Poetry. Laura Panopoulos is a Tasmanian-based poet who also runs Silver Words, a monthly open mic spoken word event in Hobart. Laura's poem is called Perimeter of Rectangles. Lathan raced home from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the title.

“It was the greatest feeling ever,” said Lathan, who had a fever of 102 on Saturday but recovered before the championship. “I still haven’t had time to let it all sink in, but it feels like the most amazing thing ever.”

Taiwan clung to a 1-0 lead from the first inning until Florida’s last at-bat. The Southeast region representatives outhit Taiwan and had a runner on third in three separate innings but couldn’t get a run across.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Florida got runners on first and second and DeMarcos Mieses, who struck out in his previous two at-bats, delivered. Hitting the gap in shallow left, he gave Chase Anderson enough time to sprint home and tie the game.

In the eighth, Lathan was placed by rule on second base to start the inning. Hunter Alexander bunted, and the throw to first went into the outfield. Florida players poured out of the dugout while the Taiwan players crumpled.

“I was just thinking, ‘Stay fair, stay fair,’” Hunter said. “After that ball goes past me, I say, ‘Let’s go!’”

Taiwan drew two straight walks to start the game. After a bunt moved the runners over and a pop out, Hu Yen-Chun hit a ball toward third, which ricocheted off James Feliciano. Chiu Wei-Che scored easily. But it was Taiwan’s only run.

This is the first championship in nine tries for Florida, which also came from behind in its 10-7 semifinal win over Texas on Saturday, scoring five runs in its final at-bat.

“We came here to do something. We came here to do a job, and today we accomplished that job,” Florida manager Jonathan Anderson said. “We took a loss to Texas, we battled all the way back, and here we are to talk about how we won this whole thing.”

Taiwan was a dominant team at the LLWS from 1969, when it won its first championship, to 1996, when it claimed its 17th. But it had only made the title game once since, in 2009, a loss to California, before Sunday. Lee Cheng-Ta managed both that team and this year’s club, Kuei-Shan Little League from Taoyuan, Taiwan. Last season, he led the same team — with a completely different roster — to a third-place finish.

Coaches for Taiwan, representing the Asia-Pacific region, declined to attend the postgame news conference.

Sports | Raging Torrent outlasts The Chosen Vron to win Del Mar’s Pat O’Brien Stakes

The Chosen Vron entered the Pat O’Brien as the 1-2 favorite and riding a six-race winning streak. The 6-year-old gelded son of Vronsky had won 15 of his last 16 races under jockey Hector Berrios — typically taking charge on the far turn and dominating the opposition in the stretch.

This time, however, Raging Torrent, a 3-year-old son of Maximum Mischief, refused to fold under the pressure applied by The Chosen Vron.

Afterwards, Raging Torrent trainer Doug O’Neill said the seven pounds less carried by his horse could have factored into the victory. The Chosen Vron was carrying 125 pounds to 118 for Raging Torrent — who returned to the West Coast after scoring two straight victories under Fresu over the past 3½ months at Churchill Downs.

Raging Torrent ($10.80) was the third-choice in the field of eight older sprinters. Long shot Big City Lights (Kazushi Kimura) finished third, 3½ lengths behind The Chosen Vron. Second-choice Senor Buscador (Joseph Talamo) rallied to finish fourth after trailing far behind in last for the first half-mile.

“Well, I tried to ride Raging Torrent as I did back at Churchill Downs,” said Fresu, who scored three wins Saturday. “Obviously, he had more work to do today as The Chosen Vron was there.

“But Raging Torrent is a fighter. I didn’t give him one touch. Once the horse showed me he was fighting, I didn’t want to punish him. He was keeping his head in front (while on the inside).

“It’s not easy to beat The Chosen Vron, which is the best horse in California. But we did it. We always knew this horse was a good one.”

“He tried, no doubt,” Berrios said of The Chosen Vron. “But maybe he came back a little too quick (after winning the Grade I Bing Crosby on July 27 at Del Mar). This might have been too soon. He had to give the winner weight, too. That all adds up.””I didn’t know if we’d get that easy of a lead,” said O’Neill. “Turning for home, I was thinking maybe we got second. I never thought he’d put away The Chosen Vron. That was pretty incredible.”

Prat, Azteca team

Six-time Del Mar riding champion Flavien Prat will fly in from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Sunday to ride 2-5 morning-line favorite Sweet Azteca in the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap — a 6½-furlong sprint on the main track for older fillies and mares.

Sweet Azteca, a 4-year-old daughter of Sharp Azteca , will be going for a third straight graded stakes win and a fifth win in six career starts in a field of seven that includes the only filly to defeat her.

In her most recent start, Sweet Azteca won the Grade II Great Lady M stakes at Los Alamitos on July 6, setting the track record for 6½ furlongs in the process. In the start before that Sweet Azteca, with Prat up, won the Grade I Beholder Stakes at Santa Anita on March 9 — finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Pacific Classic nominee Adare Manor .

In her only defeat, Sweet Azteca ran third in the Grade III Las Flores stakes at Santa Anita on Jan 1.

Trainer Mike McCarthy has Sweet Azteca running at Del Mar in the Rancho Bernardo with an eye ahead to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 2.

“We’re looking to get her a race over the track for the Breeders’ Cup,” said McCarthy. “She gave us glimpses last year that she had  some ability. You never know.”

Fresu’s other wins Saturday came with Tarantino ($13 in the third) and Love Our Family ($7.60) in the fifth — giving the jockey 21 wins on the season and third in the standings.

• Emerald Bay , a 2-year-old son of Nyquist who was a $700,000 purchase as a yearling, scored his first win for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Juan Hernandez in the day’s opening race as a 2-5 favorite. Emerald Bay ran second in his July 28 debut at Del Mar as an equally heavy favorite.

The Timber Rattlers (70-44 overall, 28-20 second half) grabbed the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Eduardo Garcia doubled, and Matt Wood walked to keep the inning going. Then, Jadher Areinamo punched a single through the right side of the infield to score Garcia for the 1-0 advantage.

The mood turned very serious in the top of the third inning. Luis Lara walked to start the inning against Great Lakes starting pitcher Patrick Copen. Cooper Pratt was next, and Pratt hit a line drive right back at the right-handed pitcher. Copen could not get his glove up in time and the ball hit him in the face. The game was delayed 21 minutes while Copen received medical attention from the training staffs of both teams and on-site paramedics. Copen, wearing a neck brace, was carted off the field on a stretcher while the grounds crew cleaned up the blood from the mound.

The game restarted with a single from Garcia against new Great Lakes pitcher Christian Romero, who started warming in the bullpen as Copen was taken off the field, to load the bases. Romero escaped the inning with a strikeout and a double play.

The Loons (60-53, 26-21) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Jake Vogel reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error by Garcia. Josue De Paula singled up the middle with one out to score Vogel.

This was the only run allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher Will Rudy. He allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out four over five innings. He was also in line for his third straight win due to what happened in the top of the sixth inning.

Hedbert Pérez, who suffered a season-ending injury with the Carolina Mudcats on July 18, 2023 and had only returned to game action last Tuesday with the Rattlers, crushed a two-out, solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. The homer was the first for Pérez since July 6, 2023. It also gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived. De Paula hit the first pitch from Yerlin Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth inning for a solo homer to tie the game.

Great Lakes got to reliever Aaron Rund in the bottom of the eighth inning and it was De Paula who got things started with a lead-off walk. Kyle Nevin had a hit-and-run single to get De Paula to third. Jake Gelof got a high chopper over the head of Garcia at third for a double to score De Paula. Sam Mongelli was next. He singled to knock in Nevin with an insurance run.

Tayden Hall doubled with one out in the top of the ninth inning against Loons closer Kelvin Ramirez, but he was left stranded as the next two batters were retired. Wisconsin stranded eight runners and was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The defeat was the third straight loss for the Timber Rattlers. This is the fourth time Wisconsin has lost three in a row. They have not lost four games in a row this season.

Great Lakes has beaten Wisconsin six straight times at Dow Diamond dating back to winning the final five games of a series in Midland in June of 2022.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Dow Diamond. Alexander Cornielle (6-5, 4.52) is scheduled as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Maddux Bruns (0-1, 1.96) is set to start for the Loons. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM with the Community Blood Center Pregame Show set to go at 5:45pm. Sports | Lake Mary, Florida, rallies to beat Taiwan 2-1 in 8 innings to win Little League World Series title

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Lathan Norton was sick and didn’t play on Saturday at the Little League World Series. But on Sunday he scored the winning run in the championship.

Lathan raced home from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the title.

“It was the greatest feeling ever,” said Lathan, who had a fever of 102 on Saturday but recovered before the championship. “I still haven’t had time to let it all sink in, but it feels like the most amazing thing ever.”

Taiwan clung to a 1-0 lead from the first inning until Florida’s last at-bat. The Southeast region representatives outhit Taiwan and had a runner on third in three separate innings, but couldn’t get a run across.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Florida got runners on first and second and DeMarcos Mieses, who struck out in his previous two at-bats, delivered. Hitting the gap in shallow left, he gave Chase Anderson enough time to sprint home and tie the game.

In the eighth, Lathan was placed by rule on second base to start the inning. Hunter Alexander bunted and the throw to first went into the outfield. Florida players poured out of the dugout while the Taiwan players crumpled.

“I was just thinking, ‘Stay fair, stay fair,’” Hunter said. “After that ball goes past me, I say, ‘Let’s go!’”

Taiwan drew two straight walks to start the game. After a bunt moved the runners over and a pop out, Hu Yen-Chun hit a ball toward third, which ricocheted off James Feliciano. Chiu Wei-Che scored easily. But it was Taiwan’s only run.

This is the first championship in nine tries for Florida, which also came from behind in its 10-7 semifinal win over Texas on Saturday, scoring five runs in its final at-bat.

“We came here to do something. We came here to do a job, and today we accomplished that job,” Florida manager Jonathan Anderson said. “We took a loss to Texas, we battled all the way back and here we are to talk about how we won this whole thing.”

Taiwan was a dominant team at the LLWS from 1969, when it won its first championship, to 1996, when it claimed its 17th. But it had only made the title game once since, in 2009, a loss to California, before Sunday. Lee Cheng-Ta managed both that team and this year’s club, Kuei-Shan Little League from Taoyuan, Taiwan. Last season, he led the same team — with a completely different roster — to a third-place finish.

Coaches for Taiwan, representing the Asia-Pacific region, declined to attend the postgame news conference.
