Which Championship Tour Surfer Had the Best 10-Point Ride in 2024?

Photo: Tony Heff/WSL

At the time of this video’s release, the World Surf League has awarded seven 10-point wave scores on the 2024 Championship Tour and Challenger Series. The WSL did not include the  numerous exquisite tubes threaded at the Nias Pro QS on this list, as there were more 10s present than a Lionel Messi fan convention. Let’s review the best waves of the year in sequential order below.

Molly Picklum’s backside bomb in the semi-final of the Pipeline Pro was the first 10-pointer of the year. After the women had surfed in dismal conditions the day before, her wave quite literally signaled the start of a new day and set the standard for what became a banner year for the women’s CT in waves of consequence.

Barron Mamiya’s 10 got him the with over John John Florence in the final at Pipeline. It vaulted the young Hawaiian into rare territory as he can claim two CT wins at Pipeline and Sunset Beach. It was an absurdly steep drop followed by a running chamber that required Barron to pump the pedal to the medal while holding his rail backside. Difficult does not begin to describe it. Britt Merrick and the Channel Islands Surfboard team appropriately lose their minds on the sand.

Many have waxed prosaic about John’s relationship with Margaret River, so we need not delve deep into it. But the explosive layback he pulled against an in-form wildcard George Pittar again reminded us that John’s true difference point is unlocked in the juice. It was a turn not many can pull, and even fewer have pulled it at Margs.

Tatiana’s ride in Tahiti was quite possibly the heaviest ride a woman has paddled into at Teahupo’o, and certainly in competition at the venue. You could tell right away it was something special for the 28-year-old, who has steadily progressed her barrel game ever since she joined the tour a decade ago. Remarkably, she didn’t win this semifinal heat as local wildcard Vahine Fierro got a high 9 and an 8, compared to Tatian’s 10 and a 6. A tough result, but it was the wave of her life. Can’t complain too hard.

Photo: Matt Dunbar/WSL

Speaking of Teahupo’o Gabriel Medina reminded everyone why he is the shallow-water master at this special stretch of reef. This was trademark Gabriel: take off super deep and ride the foamball to glory. All due respect to Jake Marshall, who put up a solid heat total of 15.23, but this heat was the Gabriel show. He called the score with the 10-finger salute when he came out, and the judges agreed.

John’s second 10 of the year came in El Salvador, an event he dominated from start to finish. His maneuver list on this wave in sequential order: a massive alley-oop (reminiscent of his 2013 Kerramas air), a searing wrap, a pocket jam and a closing snap. It was vintage John, and his win at Punta Roca would help solidify his spot as the No. 1 seed in the WSL Finals, which of course led to his third world title.

Now we move to the Challenger Series and Ronnie Blakey’s hoarse voice as he watched Erin Brooks come out of a screaming backside barrel at full-throttle Snapper Rocks. Textbook form from the 17-year-old phenom on a wave that would have at least a dozen hungry Aussies jousting for position. Erin would go on to win the event, but this barrel should be her lasting memory from a successful Queensland session.

Macy Callaghan got the first 10-point ride ever on the women’s Challenger Series when she needed it. Trailing with 6 minutes left versus India Robinson and needing a 4.83 at pumping Snapper, Macy cleanly went in and out of a dreamy overhead right then hit two turns for an extra bonus, but the tube alone got the score.

Scheffler, Morikawa, Hovland Survive Heat of Competition and Atlanta

There is such a thing as acclimating to heat. In the case of the PGA Tour, it has a double meaning.  There’s the matter of getting used to the actual 95-plus degree temperatures of Atlanta during the Tour Championship.

Then there’s the mental and physical pressure of the heat of competition. The highest-level golfers welcome the latter. They look forward to it, relish it. They want to overcome it.

Now, after weeks of actual too-hot-to-touch conditions on the PGA Tour and scores that have been like a blast furnace, this week at the Tour Championship is the grand finale for both.

Atlanta has been an ice-cream-melter, egg-on-the-sidewalk-fryer, deodorant-failing, shade-seeking week. And yet golfers were burning up the course with great shotmaking, looking as relaxed as they might when playing on a cool spring day.

"“Frank, they make it look so easy,” Colt Knost quipped to Frank Nobilo on Golf Channel."

Whether it was the actual temperature or the pressure of being chased in round one of the Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler let plenty of players back in the tournament when he opened with a 1-over par score of 71. Collin Morikawa, for instance, posted 10 shots better, a 61, which was definitely a hot score. He said he found something in his game, but he wouldn’t reveal what it was.

On Friday at the Tour Championship, the temps of Atlanta ramped up.

In round two of the Tour Championship, the over-the-top temps of Atlanta ramped up, and so did the pressure on the course.

That didn’t seem to matter to Scheffler, Morikawa, or Viktor Hovland who used it to cook up great rounds.

“Frank, they make it look so easy,” Colt Knost quipped to Frank Nobilo on Golf Channel.

And East Lake isn’t easy.

Hovland, who had his own 61 last week at Olympia Fields, kept rolling. He birdied the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th to take the lead by two strokes over Scottie Scheffler.

Curt Byrum on Golf Channel called Hovland a legitimate threat.

All you can say for sure is that spending so much time in college at Oklahoma State taught the Norwegian how to play in the heat, because he wasn’t having a problem with it.

But that wasn’t all that happened. Hovland explained getting on a run in tournaments.

"“You just think back and, oh, I’ve hit three, four really good iron shots, and I’ve made three, four really good putts in a row. Let’s just keep it going,” he said. “It’s kind of — it’s as simple as that. That’s the way I’m thinking and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”"

The last couple of weeks, it’s been working.

Morikawa’s fix to his game wasn’t a fluke. He played steady golf and posted his own 64, tying Hovland when he made birdie at the final hole.

"“If I was going to tell myself I was going to be 16-under through two days, with my total score or whatever you want to call it, I would have taken that,” he admitted after round two.  “There’s going to continue to be low scores this weekend. Greens are starting to firm up. You’re still going to see guys firing at pins.”"

Scheffler kept making the occasional birdie as he needed them, until the 18th. He finished with a par for a 65, just one back of the two leaders at the Tour Championship.

"“I would like to be in the lead,” he said after his round. “I was actually closer to the lead after yesterday’s round. That’s how weird this format is.”"

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm had his own 65, and was at 12-under, and Xander Schauffele’s score in round two was one better at 64. He was also at 12-under par.

"“No matter what you’re using off the tee, you have to put the ball in the fairway and then afterwards you have to attack,” Rahm explained. “There’s always going to be somebody having a good day shooting 65 or lower.”"

“The course will eat you alive if you’re not in the fairway,” Schauffele said. “If you try and run up this leaderboard, you got to start from the fairway.”

He said he watched Rory McIlroy make a run at it, so he knows it can be done.

Next. Will a late injury derail Rory's FedEx Cup aspirations?. dark

There are two more rounds left, and tomorrow’s will supposedly be in 99-degree heat, one degree lower than was promised earlier in the week.  It seems the only thing left for them after that is ghost pepper hot sauce.

Scottie Scheffler's reaction to 112-degree FedEx St. Jude Championship heat

Even the scorching weather cannot stop Scottie Scheffler

Kendall Capps

featured-image

Scottie Scheffler is once again reminding the golf world why he is the top-ranked player in the world. Scheffler moved up the leaderboard at the FedEx St. Jude Championship following a 5-under 65 Friday. He closed with three birdies in his last four holes to pull within two shots of the lead currently held by Hideki Matsuyama and Denny McCarthy.

It appears even sweltering heat cannot even slow down the Ridgewood, New Jersey native. TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, host of the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs , was scorching hot Friday. The temperature reaches as high as 97 degrees, but the heat index including humidity reached as high as 112 degrees.

Scheffler knew well enough to take shade when it presented itself. However, the same could not be said for his caddie, Ted Scott.

“Honestly, as he was running up to the 9th green, I was thinking to myself, why is he doing that. I'm in the rough; I'm just trying to make sure I get it up there on the green. He wanted to make sure the number was correct on the green,” Scheffler said following his round.

“He didn't trust the book, but by the time I thought about it, he was already up there on the green measuring the distance. He did that twice today; he did it on two and he did it on nine.”

That sure is dedication from Scott. But apparently he eventually came to his senses.

“I guess he got tired because he didn't do it the rest of the day,” said Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler looking to close out historic PGA Tour season in style

Scottie Scheffler walks to the tee on the 10th hole during the second day of the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.

Scheffler has run circles around his fellow PGA Tour competitors this year. Not only did Scheffler win his second Masters Tournament, he won five other times. That includes making history becoming the first player ever to win the Players Championship back-to-back years. He also captured The Memorial at Bay Hill, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage and the Travelers Championship.

Oh, let's not forget Scheffler won gold at the Paris Olympics in unbelievable fashion two weeks ago.

The only way he can improve upon what has already been a historic season is if he caps it with a Tour Championship. But the format of the FedEx Cup Playoffs does not do him any favors. Despite lapping the field, Scheffler will hold just a couple shot advantage going into East Lake in two weeks.

Whether he wins this week at St. Jude or not, he is essentially locked into the number one spot. That is something Scheffler has openly called “silly” earlier in the week. Even Matsuyama all but called the format unfair to the world number one. But it is what it is.

Scottie Scheffler leads Tour Championship by 5. How about without strokes?

Collin Morikawa is leading the Tour Championship... without the starting strokes.

Collin Morikawa did what he could Saturday to keep pace with Scottie Scheffler, even closing within two shots of the World No. 1.

But when it felt like Morikawa took one step forward, Scheffler took two.

Scheffler birdied four out of the final five holes at East Lake to close out the third round of the Tour Championship five shots ahead of Morikawa and nine ahead of anyone else.

But that’s with starting strokes. Without them, Scheffler would be trailing Morikawa by one.

This is the sixth year of the Tour Championship’s starting strokes format which sees the FedEx Cup standings translated into starting scores for each of the 30 players to advance all the way to the season’s final event. If you want to see how everyone started the week, click here for the full breakdown.

Scottie Scheffler came into the week as the FedEx Cup leader for the third consecutive season and thus started the tournament with a two-stroke lead at 10 under, but he has yet to win the season-finale and FedEx Cup title.

Pro golfers Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa shake hands on the 18th hole after finishing play following a weather delay in the second round of the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake.

‘It’s not a good thing’: Tour stars doubtful of halting Scottie Scheffler’s FedEx Cup waltz

In fact, in 2022 he held a larger lead (six strokes) over Rory McIlroy but shot 73 in the final round to allow McIlroy to pass him.

This year, it’s Collin Morikawa chasing him and without the starting strokes, it’s a much closer fight. Morikawa and Scheffler are 17 and 16 under for the week without their starting strokes, two shots better than anyone else in the field.

Coincidentally, Morikawa started the week at four under, the same place where McIlroy started his victorious week from in 2022. So anything is really possible. But as we’re all aware, this is a much different Scottie Scheffler than in 2022.

And the leaderboard without starting strokes isn’t completely meaningless. The Official World Golf Ranking will use it to distribute points from this week’s event. So while Scheffler could end up with the FedEx Cup title, and the $25 million that goes with it , while padding his massive lead in the ranking, Morikawa could end up with a bigger bump.

Keep reading below for what the entire Tour Championship leaderboard would look like without starting strokes.

Viktor Hovland applies heat atop Tour Championship leaderboard

Viktor Hovland hits his second shot on the fourth fairway during the second round of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, Friday, August 25, 2023, in Atlanta. (Jason Getz / Jason.Getz@ajc.com)

Put a Norwegian in the summer simmer of the Deep South, and shouldn’t he melt like butter on the griddle?

We’re accustomed to our Norwegians winning nordic combine gold, whatever that is.

They jump off the side of snowy mountains and ski cross country despite the advent of the snowmobile. They take the movie “Frozen” to be a documentary.

Yet on Day Two here at the Greater Heat Rash Open at East Lake Golf Club, there was the pride of Oslo making himself as at home in the upper-90s Atlanta swelter as any native. Moreso, actually. He’s just getting stronger as the heat builds.

Viktor Hovland went on what for him is quickly becoming a patented spree to feed his lead at the increasingly interesting Tour Championship. As a week ago when he strung together birdies like pearls on a necklace on the final nine to win the BMW Championship, he closed fast Friday to polish a 64, tying Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa for low round of the day.

That left Hovland, who was staked to an 8 under head start because of his lofty FedEx Cup points standing, at 16-under for the still developing week.

He remained tied with first-round co-leader Morikawa, who stands as the lone player in the 30-man field to yet commit a bogey or worse.

For Hovland, it was seven birdies over the final nine a week ago. And five birdies in a six-hole stretch to highlight a back-nine 30 on Friday. He’s just a cut fastball away from being a great closer.

What is the key to such eruptions of low numbers? “You just think back and, oh, I’ve hit three, four really good iron shots and I’ve made three, four really good putts in a row. Let’s just keep it going,” Hovland said.

“Simple as that. That’s the way I’m thinking and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”

It was so hot Friday that antiperspirants surrendered on the practice green, long before any player even reached the first tee. Sunscreen begged to be put back in the tube, where at least there might be some shade. Yes, as a one-time collegiate player at Oklahoma State, Hovland has had a chance to somewhat acclimate to this climate. Still, pretty extreme stuff for anyone out at East Lake this weekend.

The wonder thus far is what a minor factor the heat has been on many of those walking 18 holes in it. With better than 40% of the field – 13 players – shooting 67 or better Friday, no heat fatigue was evident. No matter if they are from Norway, Texas or, for that matter, Vermont.

After an opening-round 71, Texan Scottie Scheffler, the FedEX Cup points leader all season, course-corrected and shot 65 Friday. He’s two back of the leaders at 14 under.

He admitted that not straying off the tee and not putting like he was blindfolded – as he did Friday – was rather helpful.

“I was six shots better. I didn’t hit it in the water on 15. And I had three less three-putts. So there you go,” boiling down his four hours’ work to four simple sentences.

New Englander Keegan Bradley, who wisely traded ski racing for golf at a tender age, backed up his Thursday 63 with a very useful 67 Friday to snuggle in at 13 under, three behind the leaders.

For Hovland, the numbers tell a convincing story. Through two rounds, he’s first in strokes gained off the tee. And was first in strokes gained putting Friday. That is a potent combination, especially at a place where the Bermuda rough can trap a player like a bad relationship.

“I think it all starts from just the tee,” Hovland said. “I’m hitting a lot of fairways, driving it really well. If you’re constantly in the fairway on this golf course, you can really be aggressive with some of the iron shots in there. I’ve just been able to give myself a lot of looks. And on the back nine, I started making some putts.”

There has been enough low scoring throughout to put a goodly number of players in contention, regardless of where they began the week in the staggered scoring format. Seven players are in the picture at double-digit under par, all of them ranked top 20 in the world, including four of the top 6.

The weekend is heavy with the promise of great players going low.

As Jon Rahm outlined the game plan for the next two days: “I think you have to be aggressive. You have to keep an aggressive mindset. ... There’s always going to be somebody having a good day shooting 65 or lower. It literally happens every day no matter the conditions we play in.”

2024 Tour Championship weather forecast calls for sunny skies and heat at East Lake in Atlanta

tour championship heat

The 2024 Tour Championship weather forecast looks to include a small chance of rain falling at East Lake Golf Club, and the updated forecast for the week calls for warm temperatures throughout the week of the tournament in Atlanta.

The general weather forecast calls for little chance of rain, with Thursday expected to be the hottest day of the week. The wind will be out of the southeast for the first three of four scheduled days of the tournament, moving to the southwest for the final day.

With the Tour Championship back in the East Lake Golf Club area, the weather is not expected to play much of a factor at all in the tournament. However, there can always be a pop-up storm because of the humidity that could cause weather stoppages.

2024 Tour Championship updated weather forecast

  • Thursday, August 29: 93 degrees, mostly sunny with a 25 percent chance of rain, S 5 mph winds
  • Friday, August 30: 92 degrees, partly cloudy with a 25 percent chance of rain, SE 6 mph winds
  • Saturday, August 31: 92 degrees, sunny with a 20 percent chance of rain, SSE 6 mph winds
  • Sunday, September 1: 91 degrees, partly cloudy with a 25 percent chance of rain, WSW 6 mph winds

PGA Tour players struggling in extreme Memphis heat; feels like 110+ at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Extreme heat and humidity have again defined the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, and PGA Tour players are struggling through it.

Hideki Matsuyama, PGA Tour, FedEx St. Jude Championship

At last year’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, Lucas Glover’s sweaty pants went viral as a result of the swampy summer heat in Memphis. His slacks were drenched, looking like he had just taken a shower en route to his historic victory. His ‘swamp-ass’ served as a perfect metaphor for how everyone felt.

This year is no different, as real-feel temperatures exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, leaving PGA Tour players exhausted, grumpy, and thirsty. Unfortunately, the weekend forecast at the FedEx St. Jude Championship calls for more of the same.

“I worry more about the heat than the test of golf. I sweat a lot,” said Denny McCarthy, who shot an impressive 4-under 66 on Thursday.

“I struggle in the heat. I have a hard time getting things dry.”

Players rotated through multiple gloves, drank countless hydration drinks, and used their personal hand towels to dry themselves off numerous times. Some even used baby powder on their hands to help keep them dry, a trick many pros use in soupy conditions.

“It’s tough to keep your hands dry, just to stay mentally into it,” said Harris English, who hails from Georgia and is used to this heat.

“It’s so much easier to lose focus out there when it’s this hot.”

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 9 p.m. central time on Friday evening, well after the second round concludes.

Scottie Scheffler, PGA Tour, FedEx St. Jude Championship

The heat index will continue to hover around 112 degrees, making it borderline unbearable for players, fans, and pundits on the ground alike.

“I felt like I was preparing for battle this week, really,” McCarthy added.

“Just in terms of last year, I changed a lot of things in terms of hydration and what I’m eating before I play these types of rounds where it’s really hot. I felt like it helped out there today, helped me kind of stay in it. Last year, I felt like it was just brutal every day, and it was hard to focus on my golf.”

McCarthy went on to explain how the heat at last year’s FedEx St. Jude Championship contributed to his T-66 finish, which dropped him out of the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings. He ultimately did not make it to the Tour Championship despite arriving in Memphis ranked 24th.

His struggles in the heat actually led him to seek medical advice, and he discovered that he needed to drink more fluids.

As such, this year, McCarthy, who is still searching for his maiden PGA Tour title, showed up at TPC Southwind ranked 45th in the rankings. He also arrived with a game plan on how to tackle the Memphis heat, and so far, it has paid off. But Thursday’s round still came with a healthy dose of struggles.

“I just felt like I was trying to survive the heat out there today,” McCarthy said.

“I did a good job.”

But every player has to deal with these temperatures. Hence, Sam Burns , a Texan, keeps it simple while competing in these conditions.

“I think if you think about the heat a lot and you talk about how hot it is, then you kind of start believing that,” Burns said.

“I think it’s one of those things where you just focus on playing golf, and the heat is just part of it.”

That does not mean it’s not challenging. But battling through heat like this is taxing, even for the best players in the world.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Viktor Hovland dominates to hoist FedEx Cup after second straight victory

Hovland pulled off the rare bmw championship, tour championship double to claim an $18 million grand prize.

The summer heat wave sweeping across the United States has a new name: Viktor Hovland. Running away from the field in record fashion at the 2023 Tour Championship, Hovland finished the week at 27 under and five strokes clear of Xander Schauffele to claim his first FedEx Cup.

Beginning the week at 8 under, Hovland was the top name on both the official leaderboard and the shadow leaderboard (which the Official World Golf Rankings recognizes) as his 72-hole total of 19-under 261 matched that of Schauffele's.

The young Norwegian became just the fifth man to claim the final two legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. In the process, he cashed a pair of checks amounting to $21.6 million, $18 million of which came this week for winning the FedEx Cup.

Hovland did most of the heavy lifting early in the week, but the laidback Sunday stroll most envisioned was anything but stress-free. Starting off the final round with a six-stroke lead, the 25-year-old was faced with immediate stress as a two-hour weather delay arrived just as he was lining up a 15-foot par putt on No. 2.

While all 29 of Hovland's counterparts were busy on the driving range in the lead up to the restart, he was hanging out on the putting green. Practicing a left-to-right tickler, Hovland's added reps paid dividends as his successful conversion for par was met with an unsuccessful birdie bid from Schauffele.

Schauffele, the unofficial king of East Lake Golf Club, mustered together a mighty charge. Five birdies on his front nine saw the 2017 Tour Championship winner turn in 30, the lowest front-nine score of the week. Hovland's lead foot was heavy on the gas pedal in lockstep with his playing competitor as Schauffele's front-nine heater was only able to trim the edge to five.

Avid golf fans know a tournament doesn't start until the back nine on Sunday. Take a look at Hovland seven days ago, and birdies from the blade of Schauffele on the 11th and 12th cut the front runner's lead to three and pumped blood back into the heart of the postseason finale.

Heartbeats of spectators and players began to pulse even faster as pressure ramped up and shots were magnified. Right when it looked like Hovland's margin would get cut once again, the man who has done no wrong the last week found an extra gear and let out a hearty fist pump when his par putt from 23 feet -- his longest made putt of the week -- found the bottom of the cup on the 14th.

The championship was put on ice with that conversion, and Hovland's ascension to the top of the sport was official roughly an hour later. Complete throughout his game and throughout his mind, Hovland proved yet again to be a quick study and aced this year's final with flying colors. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the leaderboard at the 2023 Tour Championship.

2. Xander Schauffele (-22): Take away Hovland, and Schauffele wins the FedEx Cup running away. That pretty much sums up his season as he enjoyed the best statistical year of his career but walks away without a win. He ran into a bulldozer at the Wells Fargo Championship, and the same was true this week. Schauffele continued to be one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour in 2023 as he racked up 17 top 20s in 23 starts and did not miss a single cut. Grade: A+

3. Wyndham Clark (-16): What a year for Clark. A first-time PGA Tour winner turned major champion turned top-three finisher in the FedEx Cup. His rise to the upper echelon of the game has been a joy to watch, and it begs the question: What will next year have in store? Enjoying one of the five best seasons on the PGA Tour this year, Clark proved to have the game and mettle in the big moment. He will head to Rome as one of the many rookies on the U.S. Ryder Cup team where this new affinity for the bright lights will be needed for the American side. Grade: A

4. Rory McIlroy (-14): The back injury took center stage at East Lake for the three-time FedEx Cup champion. Unable to hit any shots leading up to the tournament, McIlroy did well to get around East Lake in even par Thursday and remain within three strokes of the lead after beginning at 7 under. However, without the vintage McIlroy firepower, that was the closest he would get to the top as he ultimately became a non-factor in the championship. It would have been a nice bow on a stellar summer that featured 10 straight top-10 finishes dating back to the PGA Championship. Grade: A-

T6. Collin Morikawa (-11): He clipped Tiger Woods' 36-hole scoring record by two at East Lake, but that was as good as it got for the two-time major champion. He would have become the first player to start from 1 under to win the FedEx Cup and would have done so in a season where he once again was winless. It has now been more than two years since Morikawa has won on the PGA Tour, but there should not be any cause for concern. This season marked the best of his career in terms of total strokes gained and strokes gained around the green. Grade: B+

T6. Scottie Scheffler (-11): The world No. 1 entered the week atop the FedEx Cup standings only to relinquish his edge with a poor opening round. Scheffler did well to bounce back Friday -- when he gained nearly two strokes on the greens -- but the putting woes lurked and spelled his demise ending the week dead last with the putter. This year had all the makings of one of the all-time seasons on the PGA Tour as Scheffler led in strokes gained tee to green, strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained approach. He was only able to notch a pair of victories when a minimum of five felt certain as his 145th-ranked flat stick proved to be a constant hindrance. He became the first player in the staggered start era to begin the week with the lead and finish outside the top five. Grade: C

T18. Jon Rahm (-7): The Spaniard led the FedEx Cup for 30 consecutive weeks, entered the postseason in pole position but stumbled when it mattered most. Forgettable outings at the St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship put Rahm at 6 under to start the Tour Championship. He got within four at the halfway point before heading in the wrong direction on Moving Day. The big left miss was heavy on the mind of Rahm with the driver in hand and mirrored early spring troubles he endured. Despite a relatively quiet summer, Rahm should be the PGA Tour Player of the Year with a Masters title, three other victories and his runner up at The Open. Grade: C-

27. Jordan Spieth (+1): While he was lucky to qualify for the Tour Championship, the 2015 FedEx Cup champ did nothing with his good fortune. Spieth ranked outside the top half in each strokes gained category and put the finishing touches on a year that did not include a single trophy. The injuries the week of the Wells Fargo Championship sent his season into a frenzy, and not even the rollercoaster that is Spieth could get his game back on track. Grade: D

Rick Gehman is joined by Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme to break down Viktor Hovland's clinical performance at the Tour Championship. He is the 2023 FedEx Cup Champion. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Hovland up four with two to go

That will do it. Viktor Hovland birdies the 16th to get to 25 under and four clear of Schauffele. Xander did his best to make this thing interesting, but the par save from Hovland on the 14th really put it on ice.

Huge save for Hovland

That was the longest putt Hovland has converted all week, and it came at a momentous time. Jarring a 23-foot par save on the 14th after a poor chip, Hovland maintained his three-stroke lead with four holes to play. The Norwegian flashes a fist pump just as it seems like things were going the other way.

2024 World Champ: Caitlin Simmers Becomes Youngest WSL Champion

An all-out battle ensued for the women's 2024 World Title going to the final, best of three bouts with reigning WSL Champion Caroline Marks facing No. 1 seed Caitlin Simmers. Marks earned a massive win in their first duel before Simmers posted a WSL Finals best, 18.37 heat total to push the ante into a third fight. Simmers continued to surge and blasted an excellent 8.33 to all but secure a maiden World Title as Marks didn't get a final opportunity to answer.

Tour Championship starting positions, tee times: Where will golfers open on the leaderboard at East Lake?

The top 30 golfers in the fedex cup standings will head to east lake to wrap up the pga tour season this week.

With two playoffs events in the books, the PGA Tour will land in East Lake this week for the season-ending Tour Championship to conclude the race for the FedEx Cup.

The leaderboard, at least on Thursday, will look a bit strange.

The Tour Championship uses a staggered start on the leaderboard, which will give top-ranked Scottie Scheffler a significant advantage in Atlanta. Scheffler, who has won six times on Tour this season, will start the week at 10-under par.

"I'm trying not to treat it any differently. Like I said, the starting strokes format is a bit different. It's not a traditional golf tournament," Scheffler said Tuesday.
"But at the end of the day, the format is what it is. I'm going to try to approach it the same way I approach other tournaments, and that's stepping up on the first tee and doing my best to execute, just like I would at the Masters, at the RBC Heritage, at Palm Springs. Every tournament I am stepping up on the first tee seeing my shot and trying to hit that shot, and then going from there."

Xander Schauffele, who finished in second in the standings, will start at 8-under on the week. Hideki Matsuyama will start at 7-under, and Keegan Bradley — who held on to win at the BMW Championship on Sunday to earn a spot in the field at East Lake — will start at 6-under. That system works down until the final five players in the 30-man field, who will start at even par.

From there, whoever wins the tournament will win the FedEx Cup. That comes with a $25 million bonus and a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

'A quartet of wins that show money doesn't buy golfing glory'

The victorious GB&I team celebrate with the Curtis Cup

GB&I's Curtis Cup victory was their ninth in the 43 stagings of the biennial competition against the US

  • Published 2 September 2024

Scottie Scheffler raised both arms and punched the air like the all-conquering golfing colossus he has become.

Great Britain and Ireland’s women danced an unbridled jig of delight, Niklas Norgaard choked back triumphant tears and Annabel Dimmock blinked in happy disbelief.

Four different events of varying monetary value, but each demonstrating the joy of emerging victorious from the heat of competition.

Scheffler completed his expected victory at the Tour Championship to seal the FedEx Cup, which duly delivered a lorry load of cash, after many viewers might have anticipated witnessing a somewhat anaemic affair.

That is especially true if earlier on Sunday they had been lucky enough to see GB&I’s thrilling Curtis Cup victory over the United States at Sunningdale. That had been sport in its rawest form without a penny at stake.

It was all about the glory of amateur team success and the late putts of Lorna McClymont and Mimi Rhodes that took their side to a single point victory will live long in the memory of record crowds who assembled at that magnificent venue.

Scheffler cruises to £19m Tour Championship victory

GB&I beat US in thriller to win Curtis Cup

Norgaard wins maiden tour title at British Masters

Dimmock wins play-off to clinch Irish Open success

In comparison, it felt as though there would be precious little romance at East Lake in Atlanta, where Scheffler landed the $25m (£19m) play-off bonus. He won because his season-long performances gave him a handicapped head start.

Collin Morikawa was actually 22 under par for the week in Georgia and Sahith Theegala 21 under compared with Scheffler’s 20-under total. But with the world number one starting on an arbitrary 10 under, while Morikawa was at four under on Thursday's opening tee, he proved a comfortable winner.

It is a fair reflection of the season, where he won six other PGA Tour events, including his second major, plus Olympic gold.

But, the artifice of the season finale is aggravating, as are the outrageous sums of money involved. Scheffler’s on course earnings totalled £47.4m in 2024, equating to £9,282 for every shot he hit or £631,370 for every tournament played.

It is far from golf’s most attractive trait and it was interesting and refreshing that none of Scheffler’s post round comments made mention of the extraordinary income generated by this latest success.

He did, though, talk about the trophy - one that had eluded him in the previous two years despite starting both of those concluding Tour Championships in pole position.

“My goal to start the week was just to have the right attitude and use what I feel like is my best strength, and that's my mind,” Scheffler said.

It is clear that it is the competition rather than financial reward that drives this extraordinary golfer. And it was this spirit that, actually, made the final round such an engaging watch.

A wild drive on the seventh and a shank out of a bunker at the next opened up the tournament. The chasing Morikawa was in with a shout.

But caddie Ted Scott’s pep talk to the ninth tee reset the narrative. Scheffler fired a brilliant tee shot into the par-three green for the first of three successive birdies before an eagle at the 14th.

It was the stuff of a champion of rare quality - perhaps not deserving of such absurd financial rewards, but certainly worthy of of huge respect.

Scheffler is the undoubted player of the year. This despite Open and US PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffle landing one more major than the Masters winner.

And while we are dishing out accolades, we should mark the remarkable job done by Catriona Matthew, the first professional to captain the GB&I Curtis Cup team.

Two years ago, the United States won by 15½-4½ in a drubbing that posed a question over whether the opposition going forward should take in the whole of Europe.

Matthew, who has led the continent’s pros to two Solheim Cup successes, fostered an indomitable team spirit. “What a leader,” Karen Stupples, one of her assistants, told me.

“She comes over all laid back but inside Catriona is as tough a competitor as they come. She knew the girls, the best combinations, the order to send them out. She was brilliant.”

All of this was said with tears in the eyes of the former pro turned commentator, who won her Women’s Open title at the same Sunningdale venue two decades ago.

Matthew is naturally understated, always the first to take a step back and leave the glory to her players. Every one of them contributed to the scoreboard in their thrilling 10½-9½ triumph, with Irishwoman Sara Byrne going unbeaten.

“Obviously quite a few of them (Byrne included) will turn pro,” Matthew told BBC Sport. “So the future of women’s pro golf is looking really good,

“But I think just the enthusiasm and the desire they had to win when they’re not playing for any money is just fantastic to see. The crowds really got into it and we had huge crowds for this event.”

Dimmock played in the Curtis Cup defeat of 2014 and since turning pro a year later, had only won once. But last Sunday she came through a sudden death play off against Pauline Roussin-Bouchard to claim the Women's Irish Open at Carton House.

The Englishwoman with Irish roots has battled back from a career threatening thumb injury.

“I am proud of myself,” she said after collecting a winner’s cheque for £50,500. “There’s a lot that goes into getting me back fit. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears.”

Denmark’s Norgaard was equally emotional with his British Masters victory on the DP World Tour - his first professional triumph. “It's hard to put into words because it means so much,” he said having sobbed through a television interview.

“I've had such a slow career but always becoming a little bit better every year. I’ve not won on Challenge Tour and I'd not won anything here, and then winning this tournament is quite, quite special.”

Quite the understatement, but a message in keeping with a golfing weekend where the glorious pursuit of victory trumped everything.

Patrick Cantlay 2021 FedEx Cup

And just like that, the PGA Tour season finale is upon us, with the 30 leading contenders in the FedEx Cup set to tee it up at the oldest course in Atlanta and the home of Bobby Jones, East Lake Golf Club.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler returned to the summit of the FedEx Cup standings courtesy of a T3 finish at the BMW Championship. In the unique scoring format, the Masters champion will tee it up at the Tour Championship at 10-under-par and a two stroke lead from his nearest competitor.

Patrick Cantlay is hot on the heels of his American counterpart after a successful title defence at the BMW Championship, where he became the first player in FedEx Cup history to defend a Playoffs title. The 30-year-old will begin the Tour Championship two shots adrift of Scheffler with the chance to make history again and become the first back-to-back winner of the FedEx Cup.

Will Zalatoris rounds off a trio of American's at the top of the standings and was expected to begin the Tour Championship three off the lead. The 26-year-old claimed his first PGA Tour title in emphatic fashion at the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier this month but a back injury forced a third round withdrawal last week. The 26-year-old's race to recover has been unsuccessful and he has withdrawn from the tournament.

Recently-crowned Open champion Cameron Smith , who was ruled out of the BMW Championship as a result of a hip injury, returns at East Lake. The Aussie was the subject of a recent report which claimed this may well be his last PGA Tour event, with the 28-year-old rumoured to have signed a lucrative $100m deal to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series.

Rory McIlroy is presented with the opportunity to make history this week. The Northern Irishman enters at No.7 in the FedEx Cup standings and although six shots off the lead, can become the first three-time winner of the FedEx Cup.

Ten players will make their Tour Championship debuts at East Lake, including fan favourite Sahith Theegala. The Californian has had a superb rookie season on the PGA Tour, with five top-10 finishes - including an agonising T2 at the Travellers Championship.

Expect drama and tension as the PGA Tour draws the curtain on what has been a turbulent 2022 season.

WHO WON THE 2021 TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP?

Shaquille O'Neal Explains How He Took Pay Cut To Help Miami Heat Win First Title

Bryan townes | 5 hours ago.

May 21, 2023; Miami, Florida, USA; Shaquille O'Neal, Pat Riley and Alonzo Mourning during the second half of game three of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat for the 2023 NBA playoffs at Kaseya Center. Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-Imagn Images

Good luck with roster injuries is one of the most critical factors in winning a championship or making a deep postseason run.

Besides health, sacrifice is ultimately the most important factor because it can derail a team from reaching maximum potential.

One of those stars who favored the team’s success over his needs was former Miami Heat center Shaquille O’Neal.

In an interview with The OGs podcast, Shaquille O’Neal discussed his tenure with the Heat. His first display of sacrifice for the organization's success was immediately handing the team to a young Dwyane Wade.

O'Neal told Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller, “First thing I did when I came to Miami, I said, look, you heard a lot of (expletive) about me. That ain’t gonna happen with me and you. This is your (expletive). I’m going to help you. I am going to guide you. I don’t want them to cause a Shaq and D-Wade because this is your (expletive) already. I came here because of you. I need someone like you to help me get one more. So me and him never had a problem.”

O'Neal made his second sacrifice while negotiating his contract. He took less so Haslem could get more money and the Heat could sign James Poses and Gary Payton.

O’Neal stated, “Pat Riley came in and said “Shaq, I love you. I can give you the whole $120,000,000, and we can have nobody, or I can give you $100,000,000. Get UD some more money. I can bring in Posey. I can bring in GP., and I can bring in all them guys.” He went on to say, “You know what? I need to win.”

It is fair to say that it was an eventful opening morning at the BMW PGA Championship for the Northern Irishman as he tried to shrug off a collection of near-misses to win for the fourth time this season.

Having seen his challenge at Royal County Down break down in heartbreaking fashion – he was two clear with four to play before Rasmus Hojgaard made the most of a few huge breaks to pip him at the line – McIlroy declared that he was “getting used” to falling inches short.

In June, he bogeyed three of the last four at the US Open to hand the trophy to Bryson DeChambeau and labelled himself “The Nearly Man”. Of course, three titles in a calendar year is an achievement for the common professional. Still, there is nothing remotely average about the 35-year-old, as he re-emphasised his box-office qualities yet again.

Rory McIlroy plays his second shot on the 12th hole as his club head breaks during day one of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

A five-under 67 in the DP World Tour’s flagship event on the famous West Course put McIlroy two behind England’s Matthew Baldwin, with Denmark’s Nicklas Norgaard and Belgian Thomas Detry on six-under. There were seven birdies and two bogeys for McIlroy, yet as always with this one-off, the numbers on his scorecard did not begin to do the drama justice.

His first dropped shot was courtesy of a missed three-footer on the seventh then on the next hole he was forced to play a putt with the back of his putter, due to his ball being on the edge of the water. The highlights reel kept on whirring until the last when he hit his second out of bounds.

As well as a 40-footer on the 13th to take the outright lead, there was a remarkable recovery shot from the heather on the 11th. But it was what occurred on the par-five in between that was destined to go viral.

After a 332-yard drive – standard for McIlroy – he was in the middle of the fairway with 179 yards remaining. In the past few months, he has thrown a three-wood into a lake and snapped a driver in half when putting too much weight on the club as he went to pick up his tee.

But this was a new one, even for him, looking dumbfounded as the head sheared off his club and spiralled 20 yards ahead. By then, his ball had skipped off a bank to within seven feet. McIlroy duly missed the eagle putt.

“I don’t think it’s ever happened to me before,” he said. “It was a very weird feeling. I looked up and the club head caught my eye instead of the ball. Thankfully it went where I wanted it to. It could have been a lot worse but thankfully got it repaired and it should be OK to go tomorrow.”

McIlroy believes it was the transition in climates that caused the club’s weakness. Last month, he was playing in the heat of Memphis and Atlanta, which is quite the contrast to Co. Down and Surrey in the autumn.

However, it is still an inexplicable situation and one that mercifully for TaylorMade, McIlroy saw the funny side. He laughed when it was put to him that people would think McIlroy could afford sets that do not fall apart. “Hey, I’m paid to play with sets that don’t fall apart!” he replied. “Yeah, it was just one of those things. I hit nine-iron on the ninth and it looked as if the barrel was coming loose, but most of the incidents worked out in my favour. So I’m happy about that.”
