Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Cruise

A classic glacier cruise not to be missed.

juneau fjord tours

Tracy Arm, a classic fjord, has it all- tidewater and elevated glaciers, breathtaking mountains and sheer rock walls that reach up over a mile high with waterfalls that tumble down to the emerald green water, and Alaska’s largest icebergs.

  • PRICE: $314 Adult / $259 Child
  • DURATION: 7-8 HOURS
  • ACTIVITY LEVEL: EASY
  • LOCATION: JUNEAU

Located about 45 miles south of Juneau, Tracy Arm, a classic fjord, stands out as a “must see” for any Alaska vacation. Full day cruises depart from downtown Juneau and includes Alaska’s greatest combination of mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, glaciers, and icebergs.

The face of Sawyer is a little more than a half mile wide, so there is plenty of space for the vessel to be at the face of the glacier. The boat’s engine gets turned off at the glacier so you can listen to the ice crackle and pop and take in the sights uninterrupted while you wait for the glacier to calve.

Sawyer Glacier is an active tidewater glacier, which means it “calves” or breaks off. Pieces of ice anywhere from the size of a small car to a cruise ship fall off the face of the glacier and hit the water with a thunderous roar. No matter how many times you visit Sawyer Glacier, it is always a thrill to see a calving event.

The water at the end of the fjord is nearly 600 feet deep and when underwater calving takes place, the ice remains intact, giving us Alaska’s largest icebergs. In other glacier areas, the calved ice generally crumbles. Underwater calvings surface like giant submarines that rise over 250 feet and then settle into the water like large, blue ships.

The ice in Tracy Arm interferes with the sonar of killer whales, so it is the perfect place for hundreds of harbor seals to have their pups in the summer months.

The icebergs are framed by sheer mountain peaks that reach over 7,000 feet. Waterfalls flow from the ice-covered mountains to the jade colored inland sea.

The main focus of the cruise is the fjord and the glacier, and the wildlife is an added bonus. The guides will do their best to find you mountain goats, whales, bears, harbor seals, and birds.

Tracy Arm is the summer home for pigeon guillemots, kittiwakes and arctic terns. Mountain goats are typically seen on the rocky slopes near Sawyer Glacier. Mountain goats are more likely to come farther down the mountain on cloudier days. Stephens Pass and Holkham Bay are the best places to spot eagles, bears, and whales. Whales are seen on about 85% of our trips.

INCLUDED: Picnic Lunch, Bottled water, hot beverages, professional naturalist.

RESTRICTIONS:  Children must be at least 4 years of age to go on the cruise. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase on board. Bring cash for purchases and gratuities for the crew.

CANCELLATION: For groups of 10 or less, cancellation must be 7 days in advance for a refund. For larger groups contact us.

WHAT TO WEAR:  Be prepared for rain and cold weather. The weather in Southeast Alaska can change dramatically very quickly.  The temperature in Tracy Arm is colder than in downtown Juneau, be prepared for a drop in temperature.  Wear warm layers, warm boots, and a rain jacket/windbreaker.  Hats and gloves are also recommended.  Make sure to bring sunglasses as well.

MEETING INSTRUCTIONS: Meeting location is at 76 Egan Drive, in downtown Juneau, directly across the street from the Four Points Sheraton Hotel.  You will check in at the top of the dock at the Seadrome Building. Check in 15 minutes prior to departure time.

Exploring Tracy Arm Fjord in Juneau (Review of True Alaskan Tours)

Last Updated on February 7, 2024

Tracy Arm Fjord is without question one of the most beautiful places in Alaska and one of the most incredible Alaska glacier experiences available. 27 mile long Tracy Arm Fjord takes you past towering mountains, steep waterfalls, giant impossibly blue icebergs and ends at the two Sawyer Glaciers at the head of the fjord.

If you’re up for spending the whole day on the water (which is incredible and you really should) and going to a place that is special to locals and not often seen by visitors, then the Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Explorer operated by True Alaskan Tours is an incredible experience while visiting Juneau .

I went on this tour in June 2023 and wanted to share more about who this wonderful tour is best for and what to expect during the day.

A blue and white glacier at the head of Tracy Arm Fjord. There are mountains around the glacier and many small icebergs in the water. It's a sunny day with some clouds

Who is the Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Explorer Tour best for?

This tour is ideal for people who are traveling to Juneau on their own (not on a cruise ship) for whom seeing glaciers is a high priority along with epic Alaska landscapes. It’s also ideal for those who are willing to dedicate an entire day to go to a place not many visitors get to, since it does take a couple hours to get there from Juneau. It’s a wonderful boat trip as long as you enjoy looking at views and relaxing.

If you are on a cruise ship, it’s possible your ship offers an excursion to Tracy Arm where you meet the ship again in Juneau. If you’re interested in this, you’ll need to book it through your cruise ship (because you’ll be joining the trip while the ship is at sea) and book early as there’s limited space. Small ship cruises often go to Tracy Arm but large ships cannot get into this narrow fjord.

A large bright blue iceberg in Tracy Arm Fjord with mountains and some snow in the background.

I do not recommend this tour for young children, due to it being a long day on board a boat. Young children are allowed on the tour, but True Alaskan Tours does not recommend it.

Accessibility and Mobility

The boat that will take you to Tracy Arm is wheelchair accessible for manual wheelchairs, though many motorized scooter style wheelchairs may not have the minimum clearance to get through the doorways. If you’re uncertain about this, call them and check in with them.

What to expect on the Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Explorer

This is a wonderful tour and I absolutely loved every minute. It’s important to be prepared for a seven hour day on the water without wifi or cell service. We started the day in the rain and it got less rainy but remained cloudy during the two hours we were on the way to Tracy Arm.

Once we were in the fjord the sun started to come out, which was absolutely wonderful especially when we got the icebergs and glaciers.

We spent about an hour near the two glaciers at the head of the fjord and also stopped to get close to a waterfall and a couple big icebergs.

After heading out again, it was about two hours to get back to Juneau.

A waterfall comes down a rock wall in a forest of evergreen trees into the ocean below

How long is the trip to Tracy Arm?

The total tour time is about 7 hours. It’s about two hours each way from the dock in Juneau to the entrance of Tracy Arm Fjord. The rest of the time is spent in Tracy Arm and at South and North Sawyer Glaciers.

A photo from the back of a tour boat on the way back to Juneau from Tracy Arm. You can see the wake of the boat on calm water and mountains on both sides on a partly cloudy day

Will I get seasick?

It is very unlikely. The waters around Juneau are protected from the open ocean and there is no swell. Calm weather prevails in the summer, so you are not likely to experience a lot of motion.

That said, if you’re prone to seasickness, or concerned about it, using something preventative an hour or so before the tour starts is a good option.

Will I see whales?

It’s extremely likely that you’ll see humpback whales on this tour between Tracy Arm and Juneau. During the summer months, the waters around Juneau have many whales and you’ll be out on the water for several hours. Though not specifically billed as a whale watching tour, because the priority is to get to the head of Tracy Arm at the Sawyer Glaciers, it is still extremely likely that you’ll see them!

When I did the tour, we saw three humpback whales on the return trip, but it could happen going either direction.

What other wildlife will I see?

In addition to whales, you also have an excellent chance of seeing seals (including on the icebergs in Tracy Arm), sea lions, eagles and other birds.

Is there food on board?

Yes! Lunch is provided with your tour along with hot drinks. You can also purchase alcoholic beverages and snacks in the gallery.

Is there wifi or cell service?

No, there is no wifi on board and no cell service once you are outside of Juneau. Make sure to put your phone in airplane mode to conserve the battery for the million photos and videos you’re going to take (and bring along your back up phone charger).

Are there restrooms on board the boat?

Yes, there are plenty of marine heads on board (like airplane restrooms).

Weather in Juneau and on the way to Tracy Arm

The weather in Southeast Alaska changes often and is very unpredictable. It’s also windy on the deck of a boat, even if it’s not a windy day. Colder air comes down from glaciers also making it colder near them.

Weather in Juneau may be different than in Tracy Arm, or different at different times of day. The day I did this tour, it was raining and overcast in Juneau and later the sun came out (though it was still chilly). Typically summer days in the area are usually in the 50s or 60s and it is often cloudy or rainy, but when the sun comes out it’s intense.

What to wear and bring for the Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Explorer

It is critical to bring (no matter what the weather and forecast): a rain jacket with a hood (not an umbrella), comfortable clothes, sunglasses and a warm layer including a warm hat. All my advice for packing for Alaska is here and includes some specific products I bring with me and that I wore for the Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Explorer tour.

A person wearing sunglasses and a red rain jacket with a blue glacier in the background as well as mountains with lingering snow and icebergs in the water below the glacier.

Cost and Booking

The cost for this trip varies based on the day of the week you are going. In June 2023 the cost was $180-$250 for adults (depending on the day of the week) and $130-$210 for children ages 3-12. True Alaskan Tours does not recommend this tour for young children, however children 2 and under can come and are free (though they need a ticket). I would not recommend this tour for any children younger than 5, since it’s many hours on a boat.

Final Thoughts

If you are visiting Juneau on your own (not on a cruise ship) and you want to see a place that most visitors don’t get to go to then this is an ideal tour for you. If your priority in Alaska is seeing glaciers and epic landscapes, this tour is perfect.

Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer

Travel in comfort aboard a deluxe jetboat to experience the very best of the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area, including glacier-carved cliffs, spectacular waterfalls and exciting close-up views of the majestic Sawyer Glaciers.  You’ll also have opportunities to view and photograph the areas abundant wildlife.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Travel by deluxe jetboat to explore the very best of the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area, including exciting close-up views of the majestic Sawyer Glaciers.  Relax in the warm, spacious cabin as your experienced captain guides you through scenic passages and into the heart of a wild place that has, until recently, been buried for centuries by glacial ice.  Here, the extraordinary maneuverability of the Katlian Express will allow you to glide quietly past curious seals and icebergs – to get as close as possible to the ever-changing face of South Sawyer Glacier.

Be sure to spend as much time as possible on the topside observation deck where you can enjoy this unforgettable experience with all your senses.  At times, you can even feel the “white thunder” as immense spires of ice break from the glacier and crash into the sea.  Before departing the ice pack you will also view beautiful North Sawyer Glacier, which cannot be approached by large cruise ships.

While exploring the length of this ice-carved fjord you will cruise beneath cliffs that rise 4000-feet above the jade-colored sea, and you can even feel the mist on your face as the vessel glides near a plunging waterfall.  There will be stops along the way to view and photograph wildlife, such as Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals and Mountain Goats.  Encounters with bears and whales are not uncommon.

Throughout the voyage, your onboard naturalist will provide a wealth of information about the area, which naturalist John Muir called “one of the most dramatically stunning fjords of Southeast Alaska”.  You’ll also enjoy a picnic-style meal and a variety of complimentary snacks and beverages served by your friendly Alaskan crew as you trace the rugged shores of Stephens Passage on the cruise north to Juneau.

Hundreds Of 5-Star Reviews!

We had such an adventure with True Alaskan Tours on our Tracy Arm Fjord tour. If you are in Juneau, this is a MUST! We had a beautiful, sunny day to see all that nature had to offer! We saw a coastal brown bear, black bear, harbor seals, and humpback whales as we cruised to the fjord! We encountered crystal blue icebergs from the minute we entered the fjord. And then came the view of the glaciers--magnificent! Our world seemed so small as we cruised the fjord. The staff was knowledgeable and shared much interesting facts along the way.

We had a wonderful experience on our Tracy Arm Fjord day trip. The crew were terrific, very friendly and super knowledgeable. We really appreciated the funny and informative comments made by our tour guide Sherrie. Her enthusiasm was infectious. The boat was super comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the food was basic but good. The Captain spent some extra time with the humpback whales we encountered on the way down and on the way back. We also saw mountain goats and harbor porpoises. But most of all, the scenery was spectacular.

My husband and I did the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer tour and it is by far the best tour in my life. The crew were super friendly and the places we saw are beyond what words could describe. If there are even more stars I would give them. The Tracy Arm Fjord was the most breathtakingly beautiful place I have ever seen. We were even able to hear the ice cracking down. There were so many ice bergs floating and we even spotted waterfalls. Tracy Arm Fjord is such a delight to the eyes. Must must must do when you are in Juneau.

The sled dog summer camp was one of the favorite shore excursions for my family and me (all 3 of my kids are in their 20s). Chad and Jaime led an excellent tour and we learned so much about the Iditarod! We got to go on a ride led by 12 beautiful Alaskan Huskies. This was such a blast! At the end we got to hold puppies - it was hard to leave them. And their homemade chocolate chip cookies were darn good too. I highly recommend this shore excursion - it was tied with the Hubbard Glacier tour as the top two shore excursions we took from the Holland America line up to Alaska.

Alaska’s Inside Passage

Seakayaker paddling near an iceberg. Caution is advised since they can roll over at any moment.

The journey begins in Juneau, Alaska. Although part of the mainland, Juneau is not connected by any road system, making it a de facto island and the perfect place to start a sea kayaking expedition.

Tracy and Endicott Arms are fjords. Fjords are glacially carved valleys that have filled with sea water after the glaciers have receded, leaving typically a V-shaped and extremely deep body of water. About 45 miles south of Juneau, and adjacent to Stephens Passage, these two fjords are deep inside the Tongass National Forest and are designated wilderness areas, protected to ensure generations have access to them as they are for years to come. Both of these fjords are more than 30 miles long and have approximately twenty percent of their area covered by glaciers creating a field of floating icebergs in their waters during the spring, fall and summer seasons.

The end of each one of these fjords is the home of a massive glacier, the Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm and the Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm. Wildlife in both of these fjords is rich and diverse. Cruising these waters are harbor seals, sea lions, and humpback whales to name just a few species. On shore, bears, both black and brown, and wolves stroll along the shoreline and in the mountains. Looking down on us from the cliffs above, mountain goats and wolverine can often be seen.

These deep bodies of water have complex interactions between offshore waters flowing in from Stephens Passage and the inner waters of the fjords. Cold water temperatures full of tons of nutrient-rich food and strong currents provide habitat for an incredible amount of sea life beneath the waters surface and are home to rare corals. The presence of these corals and other species has designated these waters as habitats of concern and afforded levels of protection to ensure it is available for research.

For seven days we will have the honor of paddling, hiking and camping in this unique wilderness area. When we are ready to climb aboard our boat for our return ride to Juneau, we will miss its beauty, but with a shower and the possibility of a pizza tonight, we wave goodbye and know we can return some day.

Meet your guide in Juneau for a pre-trip meeting and dinner.

The first morning of our Endicott & Tracy Arm Fjord sea kayak trip we will meet up at the harbor in Juneau, pack our boats, load them onto our water taxi and head out to the south toward Endicott & Tracy Arm. We will arrive at Holcomb Bay near Harbor Island and depart our water taxi via a deep water launch. This means we won’t go ashore but rather will go directly into the water from our boat. Once we are all underway, we can spend the rest of the day exploring and make camp at one of the campsites nearby.

From this vantage point and with current weather information, we will look at the wind and the tide and decide whether we will venture into Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm. If we want to make it to the back of one of these breathtaking fjords, we will spend our week in just one of them. If we want to sample both and have a relaxed laid-back trip, then we can spend half the week in each fjord. Either way this week will be full of Alaskan wilderness.

Today is the last full day of our expedition. By evening we want to be back at one of the numerous campsites in Holcomb Bay. Next to a campfire after a hearty dinner, we can bask in the beauty of this shoreline looking out on Stephens Passage as the sun drops on the last night of our trip.

This morning we can sleep in, have one more camp breakfast and then pack up our kayaks before our last day exploring Holcomb Bay and its surrounding islands and coves. If the weather and wind cooperate, we will meet our water taxi in the afternoon and make our way back to Juneau.

Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer Operates April - September 7 hour excursion departing from Downtown Juneau Special weekend rates available.

Join an exclusive opportunity to experience the grandeur of Tracy Arm Fjord, including exciting, close-up views of the majestic Sawyer Glaciers. The pristine wilderness features glacier-carved cliffs, beautiful icebergs and close up views of the Sawyer Glaciers. The excursion also provides an opportunity to search for Alaska's famous wildlife.

The vessel’s maneuverability provides a chance to weave through a maze of beautiful icebergs—each pieces of ice that have fallen from the face of the glacier. From the topside observation decks you will be able to enjoy this unforgettable experience with all your senses. You can sometimes even feel the “white thunder” as immense spires of ice break from the glacier and crash into the sea.

While exploring the length of this ice-carved fjord you will cruise beneath cliffs that rise high above the jade-colored waters. As occasions arise, the captain will stop the vessel to allow for viewing and photography of wildlife, such as pigeon guillemots, bald eagles, harbor seals, mountain goats, and bears.

Throughout the voyage your onboard naturalist will provide a wealth of information. You will also enjoy a picnic-style lunch and a variety of complimentary snacks and beverages.

Join this exclusive opportunity to see the very best of the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area , including exciting, close-up views of the majestic Twin Sawyer Glaciers.

Your adventure begins as soon as you board a luxurious, high-speed catamaran , transferring to the vessel directly from your cruise ship. Relax in the warm, spacious cabin, surrounded by large windows as your experienced captain guides you past curious seals resting on floating icebergs.

As you cruise Tracy Arm, the on-board naturalist will provide a wealth of information about the area, which naturalist John Muir called 'one of the most dramatically stunning fjords of Southeast Alaska'. While exploring the length of this ice-carved fjord, you will cruise beneath cliffs that rise 4,000-feet above the jade-colored sea, and you can feel the mist on your face as the vessel maneuvers almost directly under a plunging waterfall. There will also be frequent stops for you to view and photograph wildlife, such as pigeon guillemots, bald eagles, harbor seals, mountain goats and bears.

The extraordinary maneuverability of the vessel will allow you to get as close as possible to the ever-changing face of Sawyer Glacier.

From the topside observation deck, enjoy this unforgettable experience with all your senses. You can sometimes even feel the 'white thunder' as immense spires of ice break from the glacier and crash into the sea.

Enjoy a variety of  complimentary food samples  served by the friendly Alaskan crew as you trace the rugged shores of Stephens Passage on the cruise back to Juneau.

Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. In the event unpredictable and ever-changing ice conditions preclude your cruise ship from entering Tracy Arm Fjord, the tour will be modified to explore Endicott Arm -- a fjord and tidewater glacier of equal beauty. Dress warmly in layers to fully enjoy the outside observation deck. Wear a hat or beanie; bring gloves and a scarf. The vessel is equipped with deluxe seating, a galley and restrooms. Disembark right next to your cruise ship in downtown Juneau. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Bring passport on tour.

Fjord Express to Juneau - 1-800-320-0146

Same-day and Overnight Round Trips to Juneau

Book the Fjord Express to Juneau: See more whales and wildlife than any other boat tour in Haines or Skagway.

We specialize in roundtrips to Juneau, Alaska, originating in Haines or Skagway. Our daily circuit departs Haines and Skagway in the morning and returns each evening. It's the perfect way to see the best of the Inside Passage and we can guarantee whale sightings for folks on round trips with us.

Our most popular roundtrip itineraries:

  • Depart Haines or Skagway in the morning, take a Juneau Tour , and then return to Haines or Skagway in the evening.
  • Leave Haines or Skagway in the morning, spend a day or two in Juneau and then return with us when you are done visiting the state capital.

From Skagway

Our most popular trip! Ride the Fjord Express from Skagway to Juneau! This 12 hour Skagway boat tour through the most scenic stretch of Alaska's Inside Passage includes a narrated, sightseeing & wildlife cruise with whale watching, a stop at the Eldred Rock Lighthouse, continental breakfast and light supper, bus transportation into downtown Juneau with 4 hours of free time for shopping, lunch & sightseeing.

The Fjordland departs from the Skagway Small Boat Harbor at 8:00am and returns at 8:15pm. This is the best way to see Alaska's Inside Passage all in the same day. This 12 hour tour includes a 3 hour cruise from Skagway to Juneau and return, with stops along the way for humpback and/or killer whales, a stellar sea lion rookery, harbor seals, nesting bald eagles, porpoise, waterfalls, glaciers and the historic Eldred Rock Lighthouse.

Upon arrival at the dock in Auke Bay, Statter Harbor, you will board a motor coach and relax while your driver takes you for a scenic, winding, narrated drive through the coastal rain forest of Southeast Alaska to downtown Juneau. Juneau is a city with a rich and colorful history. Our driver-guides will point out Juneau sights on the way into downtown and provide you with a walking tour map to orient you to the city’s many historic buildings and attractions you can walk to. The bus drops you on the waterfront at Marine Park, with easy access to restaurants and shopping. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, and take in the sights of Alaska’s capital during your approximately four hours of “free” time to explore downtown.

We serve a complimentary continental breakfast of muffins, apple, and coffee or tea on the morning sailing. On the return trip, enjoy a cup of our hearty smoked salmon and corn chowder, sourdough bread and a cookie for dessert. We also have soda and bottled water available for purchase on board. The boat's cabin is heated and enclosed. However, we do recommend that you bring a warm, waterproof jacket for spending time on the outdoor deck, and for walking around in Juneau. Don't forget your camera or binoculars, as we will spend plenty of time viewing whales, sea lions, bald eagles; and other wildlife! The Fjordland is a non-smoking vessel.

Check in at the boat required no later than 7:45am.  To find the Skagway small boat harbor and our boat, the Fjordland, take the Klondike Highway into downtown Skagway. Turn left on 2nd Avenue and follow it past Pullen Creek RV Park to the harbor. Look for the ramp with the blue awning at the far end of the harbor. Proceed down the ramp and head towards the southwest corner. The Fjordland is a white, 65' catamaran and it usually arrives at 7:30am. Please arrive no later than 7:45am.

A "fjord" is a Nordic term meaning a narrow waterway surrounded by sharp cliffs. So while Juneau's  Mendenhall Glacier  steals most of the tourist traffic, the 27-mile-long Tracy Arm Fjord is the bigger, better and more dramatic natural gem. The inlet is very narrow – at times, no more than half a mile wide – with cliffs that rise more than 3,000 feet on either side and waterfalls that cascade down the steep rock walls. During the summer, you can spot eagles, seals, bears and whales here.

Recent visitors said that if you only have time for one experience in Juneau, this is it. Travelers described the glacial scenery as "incredible" and "breathtaking," and recommended bringing along a quality set of binoculars and a camera to capture the scene.

The Tracy Arm Fjord is 45 miles south of Juneau, but worth the trek. If your cruise ship doesn't sail through the glaciers, you'll have to take a boat tour, which usually lasts an entire day.  Adventure Bound Alaska and Allen Marine Tours operate well-reviewed excursions from May through September, and you should reserve your spot at least a week in advance; space is limited and rates vary. For more information, check out each tour company's website, or find more options in our roundup of the best Alaska tours .

#2 Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier welcomes more than 400,000 visitors each year, and it's easy to see why: aside from its stunning arctic beauty, the glacier is only 12 miles outside Juneau and it's the only glacier in Southeast Alaska accessible by road (you can easily take a cab here). When you're not gazing at the icebergs, the Coast Mountains will likely grab your attention. Upon arrival, your first stop should be at the visitors center, where you can watch a 15-minute film describing the changing landscape, talk with forest rangers and relax in the warmth of the glacier observation area. You can also pick up a map detailing the various hiking paths around the glacier.

Many recent visitors saw the glacier while on a cruise port stop and highly recommended sharing a cab with your fellow passengers to the glacier. Travelers also advised stopping at the visitors center to watch the informative film. Of all the trails, reviewers highly recommend the East Glacier Trail for its stunning views of the glacier and the falls. For a more immersive experience (and guidance from a local), consider visiting with one of the best Alaska tours .
