Field Trip Activities {Free Field Trip Resources}

I have a love/hate relationship with field trips. Some years they are great, and some I just want to sleep for twelve hours after the field trip and never speak of it again (surely I am not the only one, right?).

Field trips can fun and super educational, though. It is nice to take the students out into the “real world,” to expose them to new experiences, and teach them how to be respectful and show manners in a variety of settings. To be honest, I sometimes find it difficult to use a field trip experience to its full potential before and after the field trip (that pacing guide gets me every year). I recently put together some free field trip activities that can be used before and after a field trip and I wanted to share them with you today.

Free field trip resources to use before and after a school field trip.

I always like to do a KWL activity about the topic or location of the field trip. A few years ago, we went to a Civil War Battlefield and completed a KWL before the trip. It was a great way to review what we had learned about the Civil War before the trip. The students also brainstormed specific things they wanted to learn about this specific battlefield location. This really helped with the participation during that part of the field trip.

Going over manners and expectation is so important for any field trip. Usually, I find myself giving a quick reminder speech before we get on the bus. However, I think this printable list of things for the students to remember is more efficient than that. Print it out the day before and go over it as a class. Then review it on the day of the field trip.

I also included a Field Trip Reminders printable because I have a hard time remembering to always tell my students to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen, etc. Having this printable helps keep me organized as well.

This next field trip activity is perfect if you are going to a location with an updated website. Using this field trip research printable, have your students go on the website and do some research. This gets them excited about the field trip but also gives them knowledge to really get the most out of the trip.

After a field trip is over, I like to have my students take some time to reflect in writing about the trip. In this set of free field trip printables, I included a narrative prompt for them to describe their day and then a persuasive prompt for them to write about their opinion of the trip.

I also give my students some guidelines with this prompt, such as you must include 3 facts you learned about the topic, or you must describe 2 learning experiences you had. This keeps them from writing only about the “fun” part of the field trips, such as hanging out with their friends on the bus or eating at a park.

This is another pretty simple printable, but it gets the students reflecting on the trip and what they learned. This type of printable is perfect for homework the day of a field trip or to fill that 30 minutes to an hour you have left in the day if you took an almost all day trip. In fact, all these printable could probably fill up a day before and an after a field trip to really maximize on the learning that happened on the trip.

In addition to the printables shown, there is also a tri-fold printable and some templates for a class ABC book that could be completed after a field trip. Click on the image below to download these resources.

I hope these free field trip activities help you and your students get the most out of your field trips. Do you have any go-to activities you do before or after field trips? Let me know in the comments!

Hey there, Jennifer I loved this post on field trips. I usually get so caught up with planning the other logistics, I often forget or forfeit these helpful worksheets. And I have to say, I love your site, it’s very similar to mine since we both went with the Modern Blogger Pro design. How did you get yours so pretty?! It’s very nice. 🙂

Get out of the classroom and explore the world!

Students on field trips to the local theater and a fire station.

Field trips are a quintessential school experience. You usually only get one or two a year so it’s important to do it right! Our roundups of unique field trip ideas have something for every age, subject, and interest. We’ve even got resources like permission slip forms and chaperone tips. Get ready to leave the classroom behind to take learning on the road!

Preschool Field Trip Ideas

Early-grade field trips help kids learn about the world and also teach them good field trip behavior. These are our top picks for the pre-K crowd, but many of the options on our kindergarten list are perfect for this age group too.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

Middle and High School Field Trip Ideas

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.

Once in a while, students are required to go for field trip so that they can see firsthand, the different theories and concepts that they study in the classroom. However, before the children can go for the field trip, the school has to obtain consent from the parents. Thus, the school has to write a letter to the parents or guardians requesting them to consent that their children take part in the field trip.

In order to write a good field trip letter to the parents, it is important that the letter details the specific location that the children will visit, what they intend to see and learn, and any necessary preparations that need to be made by the parents in order to ensure that the field trip will be a success.

The introduction of the letter should be precise. Specifically, it should brief the parent on the actual date when the field trip is supposed to take place, the time that the school bus will be leaving, and when the bus is expected to arrive back from the trip.

How Do You Write No Objection Letter From Parents To Allow A Child To Travel?

If you have received a field trip letter from school informing you that your child is expected to go for a field trip, you will be required to write a no objection letter that will show you agree your child to take part in the trip. Here is a simple format you can use to indicate that you have agreed your child takes part in the field trip.

I have no objection to my child taking part in the field trip scheduled to take place on 15 th January 2022.

Sample 1 : Field Trip Letter To Parent

Dear Parent / Guardian

The fifth grade are scheduled to go for a field trip to the animal park in Texas on 23 rd January 2022 . In this trip, the children are going to see different wild animals that they have studied in the classroom. The school bus will leave at exactly 9.00 am and return about 2.00 pm. It is crucial that your child is not late for school on that date so that he/she does not miss the trip.

The field is paid for by the school. I however, require that you ensure you have consented and returned this letter by 16 th January 2022 so that we can have the names of the children going for the trip registered with the animal park. You are requested to pack snacks for your child so that he/she can enjoy the snacks on the bus.

This is a unique opportunity that shouldn’t be missed as the children will get a chance to see many wild animals that they have only seen on TV. The children should be dressed as they normally dress when coming to school on normal days.

It is my hope that you are going to consent your child takes part in the trip. In case you have any questions or concerns regarding the planned field trip, feel free to contact me any time.

Your Sincerely

Fifth Grade Sciences Studies Coordinator

Sample 2 : Field Trip Letter To Parent

Dear Parents

The school has planned for your child to go on a science field trip with the science club. The trip is a unique opportunity for your child to gain hands-on experience on different environmental issues such as how human activities have contributed to degradation of the environment.  The field trip might include a walk of about one mile in the forest, and in the farm. We are certain that this trip will be informative and beneficial to learning of your child.

In order to make sure that your child has unforgettable experience, we seek your assistance in the following:

  • Make sure that your child wears ideal shoes – no sandals. Hiking or sports shoes are the best.
  • Dress your child well. Layers are ideal so that they can be removed as needed.
  • Let us know about any underlying health conditions such as allergy and medication.

Thanks for doing your best in ensuring that your child has a positive learning experience. For any queries or questions, feel free to contact me.

Sample 3 : Information Letter To Parent About Planned Field Trip

I am writing to inform you that your child who is a 6 th Grader has an opportunity to visit Texas for a curriculum trip. We are all thrilled about this opportunity and it’s our hope that you are also thrilled.  The luxury coach is planned to leave school on Wednesday 8 th June 2021 at 5pm. We come back to school at 9:00am on Monday, 12 Th June . The total cost for the trip is $550 and it incorporates all costs to be incurred by the students.

Students are expected to be in school-appropriate dressing during the entire trip. When parking clothes for your sons and daughters, take into consideration the fact that the trip will happen during summer season. We will try our best to advise students prior to leaving about the forecasted temperatures.

We request that you sign the attached student consent slip and return it before 30 th April 2021 . After that, we are not going to accept any other reservations. We also request that you pay the fee of $500 before 30 th April so that we can be able make all the necessary arrangements.

I hereby conform that I have consented my child to go to the Texas trip taking place from June 8 to June 12 2021.

Monday Memo: How to Make Weekly Reminder Posts Parents Will Actually Read

field trip reminder notice

Written by Kaylin Smith

“When is that event coming up?”

 “Are parent-teacher conferences next week?”

“I didn’t know that form was due already.”

While parents want to be involved and up-to-date with their student’s lives, busy schedules and endless responsibilities may prevent them from fully absorbing all the information you send home.

Though long emails are sometimes necessary, parents may feel overwhelmed by essay-like messages that get lost in their inbox and, consequently, end up missing half of the information.

How many times have you opened a lengthy email only to skim it and forget why you were supposed to read it in the first place? By keeping your communication with parents short, effective, and engaging, they’ll be sure to stay informed (and will appreciate you more in the process).

Give it a go yourself and try sending out brief weekly reminders highlighting and reinforcing essential information for parents! Here are some best practices to keep in mind:

Keep It Concise

Avoid wordy, fancy layouts. A crowded message with little open space may discourage parents from reading the entire thing. Stick to the essence of the reminder by using short paragraphs or utilizing bullet points to highlight key ideas and events.

List the Most Time-Sensitive Information First

If you have to write a long message, be sure to list the most important points first. If parents stop reading the email midway through, at least they’ll have the need-to-know information down.

Be Clear With What You Need From Them

Instead of letting parents draw their own conclusions, be upfront with what you need them to do in order to support their child. Telling them exactly what you need will limit any confusion and make overall communication more enjoyable and efficient!

Utilize Your Subject Line

Be specific with your subject line too. Include an upcoming event or an essential due date to grab the reader’s attention and reinforce important information.

Optional: Include a Weekly Student Favorite or Personal Anecdote

Did something exciting or funny happen in class that week? Quote a student’s favorite moment from the week prior at the end of your message! Ask parents to respond in the comments section with their own child’s favorite moment and highlight a new one in each week’s email. This fun addition will get parents talking to their students, teachers, and other fellow parents!

Below are some example “Monday Memo” messages to send to your district, school or classroom community.

Hi Parents,

Here are some friendly reminders for the upcoming week:

  • Science Camp field trip forms are due this Wednesday and no later. Please fill them out and submit below, if you haven’t already.
  • Our fall carnival is on-campus this Friday! If you would like to donate to the cakewalk, be sure to sign up below and drop off your baked treat by 4pm in classroom 2B, across from the cafeteria.
  • Finally, remember to keep reminding your student about their daily reading goal! At least 30 minutes of reading time should be completed each day 🙂

Last week’s favorite moment comes from Cassidy Holm:

“I was so happy after our trip to the library this week. I picked out a new book and it’s so good, I haven’t been able to put it down since.”

Be sure to ask your student about their favorite moment of the week and respond in the comments for a chance to be featured next time!

Hope you all have a great week ahead!

Mrs. Synder

Good Morning parents,

It’s that time of the year again! Here are a few essential reminders regarding the AP Calculus exam this week.

  • Students should meet in front of the cafeteria Tuesday, May 5th at 9 am with a #2 pencil, a graphing calculator, and their student ID.
  • Your student should have submitted an Excused Absence Form for the day of the exam via their StudentSquare account last week (please have them reach out to me personally if they haven’t yet)!

Your students have been working hard all year long and should be more than ready for the exam! Feel free to message me with any questions.

Happy Monday! With graduation less than 3 days away now (where did the year go?!) I’d like to take the time to share a few final reminders!

  • Students should be lined up in their assigned position on the field behind West Campus no later than 8:30 am this Thursday.
  • Early Release Permission Slips should be signed and returned to me by the end of the day tomorrow (see form attached below).
  • We are still looking for 2 volunteers to help handout graduation pamphlets and direct parents at the ceremony. Sign up below and help support our graduating kiddos on their special day!

We can’t wait to celebrate your students’ job well done and help lead them into high school with you! See you Thursday.

Permission Letter For Field Trip: How To Write It Right!

In this article, I’ll guide you step-by-step through the process of creating an effective permission letter, providing a template and personal insights to assist you.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the Purpose : Recognize that a permission letter serves as a formal request for consent and an informative document for guardians.
  • Be Clear and Concise : Use simple language to convey all essential details about the trip.
  • Include All Relevant Information : Ensure to mention the destination, date, time, reason for the trip, transportation, and contact information.
  • Personalize Your Letter : While following a template, add a personal touch to make the letter more engaging.
  • Seek Feedback : Encourage parents to provide feedback or ask questions to ensure clarity and build trust.

Step 1: Start with a Professional Layout

Begin your letter with a professional letterhead, if available, or simply start with your name, position, school name, and address at the top. Follow this with the date and the recipient’s address. This sets a formal tone for the letter.

Step 2: Craft a Clear Introduction

In your opening paragraph, briefly introduce the purpose of the letter. Mention that the letter seeks permission for the child to attend a field trip and provide a brief overview of the trip’s educational value.

Example : “I am writing to request your permission for your child, [Child’s Name], to attend the upcoming field trip to [Destination]. This trip is an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their understanding of [Educational Purpose].”

Step 3: Provide Detailed Information

This is the core of your letter. Clearly mention the following details:

  • Destination : Where the field trip will take place.
  • Date and Time : Specify the departure and return times.
  • Purpose : Explain the educational or recreational objective of the trip.
  • Transportation Details : Describe the mode of transportation and safety measures in place.
  • Food Arrangements : Specify if students need to bring their lunch or if it will be provided.
  • Cost : If there’s any cost involved, mention the amount and the payment method.

Step 4: Include a Call to Action

Trending now: find out why.

Encourage the recipient to sign the permission slip and return it by a specific date. Also, provide your contact information for any questions or concerns they might have.

Step 5: Express Gratitude

Close your letter by thanking the parents or guardians for their time and support, reinforcing the value of the field trip for their child’s education.

Step 6: Provide a Signature Line

End with a professional closing, such as “Sincerely,” followed by a space for your signature and printed name.

11 Field Trip Hacks to Save Your Sanity

Pinterest Hidden Image

Oh, springtime! The time when inside recess starts to become a memory of the past, and the weather is finally warm enough for a field trip! If you’re planning a field trip this school year, then you know that they come with massive amounts of stress… But today’s post is meant to put you at ease! These 11 field trip hacks are perfect for saving your sanity this field trip season!

field trip hacks to save your sanity

Please note this post contains affiliate links.  If you follow my links, please know that I make a very small commission from your purchase. There is no cost to you, but this extra coinage allows me to continue creating free resources and writing awesome content for you!

Hack #1- Tentative Schedule

This is my top hack because it really does help relieve some major stress associated with field trips! Having a tentative schedule that outlines what you’ll be doing, and when and where things take place will help you plan for the day. It can be as straightforward or as complicated as you like.

But, I suggest your schedule includes the following information:

  • Leave and return times
  • Lunch/snack times
  • Important event times
  • suggested bathroom breaks

And don’t forget to share the tentative schedule with every adult attending the field trip!

Hack #2 Field Trip Checklist

Collecting money, forms, and chaperone requests can get a bit unruly for 20+ students. Use a checklist to keep yourself organized as to who’s going, who paid, and who signed up to be a chaperone.

Things I keep track of:

  • Permission slip form turned in
  • Field trip money
  • Chaperone request (and approved!)
  • Chaperone money
  • Bringing a lunch from school or home

Keep this checklist in a designated field trip folder along with the forms and any other important information. You’ll be glad to keep it all in one place!

Hack #3- No Teacher Group

Ok… so this next hack is one that I feel is important, but I know sometimes available chaperones are limited. But if you can… don’t assign yourself a group. I’ve done field trips both ways: with and without a group, and let me tell you… it is so much better for you and your students if you do not have a group.

This leaves you free to handle paperwork, count students, and address behavior/medical issues as they arise without slighting your students from the field trip experience. Believe me; there is nothing worse than having to review and sign paperwork/buy tickets/talk to the coordinators while a group of students stares on longingly at their friends enjoying the day.

Hack #4-Count and Count Again

This one is for the field trip day and can help relieve a ton of stress and anxiety about losing a student. Before leaving, get a head count (number of students and adults).

As a bonus, count the number of people on your bus. So if you and another teacher share a bus, have them count, and you also count. Don’t leave the school or your field trip location until you’ve confirmed EVERYONE is accounted for!

Hack #5-Exchange Digits

Before leaving for the field trip, be sure to collect your chaperones’ information, including their cell phone numbers. Also, give them yours. This will help you when you’re split up through the day, and the chaperones can reach you if there’s an emergency or an issue (like a delay because of a bathroom break!). If you’re uncomfortable sharing your phone number, you can sign up for a Google Number here!

Hack #6- Lunches in a Gallon-Sized Baggie

This next tip will save you time and trash! Put lunches in gallon-sized baggies. This helps the lunches lay flat, maximizing space in the cooler. And bonus – the baggie serves as a trash bag when students are done.

To do this, I send home a field trip reminder/information letter with the baggie attached a few days before the trip. I also included that if students requested lunch from the cafeteria, they could return the baggie. On the day of the field trip, be sure to label the lunches with the students’ names and put them in the cooler. This is a perfect job for a chaperone to do!

Hack #7- Extra Lunch

If you can, order an extra lunch from the cafeteria. You never know who might drop, forget, or lose a lunch on the way. It’s happened before, and this saves you from having to try and buy lunch at your location. (If that’s even available!) If no one needs the extra lunch, pass out the meal to students who are still hungry.

Hack #8- Field Trip Information Sheet

There are so many details you need to have with you on the day of your field trip. I like to keep it all in one place and use a field trip information sheet.

field trip information sheet

Things to put on the field trip information sheet:

  • Tentative schedule
  • Contact information for the school, yourself, and another teacher who is on the field trip
  • Groups/Chaperones
  • Chaperone information
  • Any allergies/medications- HIPPA requires you keep this information as private as possible, but of course, during a field trip, the chaperones NEED to know if there is a health issue to be concerned about (ie: allergic to bee stings and has an epi-pen). Even better- if a student does have life-threatening health concerns, ask the parent/guardian to chaperone the field trip.

Once you’ve made your information sheet, print out copies for yourself, your chaperone, and the office. Now everyone is on the same page.

Want a field trip form that’s done for you? This one is a free download in The Applicious Resource Library. Sign up at the bottom of this post!

Hack #9- Snacks

I’m not sure what it is… but I have hungry kids this year! We brought snacks for both field trips, and they were a LIFE saver! I asked parents to donate some water bottles, granola bars, and pretzels, but anything could work!

If students walk around with their chaperones, gather enough snacks for each group and place them in a gallon-sized bag. Then, chaperones can divvy out snacks throughout the day.

Hack #10- Eat a Snack Before You Leave

This one goes with hack #9. If you leave a bit later in the morning (after 9:00), having students eat a bite before you go is a good idea.

Ask parents to send in granola bars or crackers with peanut butter (if no students with allergies). You want to ward off the “I’m hungry” hours before lunchtime.

Hack #11- Bring a backpack

For the day of the trip, bring a backpack. This will serve as your mini-classroom on your back. This one from Vera Bradley is a favorite of mine! The durable material, number of large zippered pockets, and side pockets make it a teacher’s dream!

Fill it with the following:

  • Bandaids or first aid kit
  • Hand sanitizer ( spray kind is my new favorite for on-the-go!)
  • Cell phone (and a power bank if you’re going to be gone all day)
  • water bottle
  • headache medicine for teacher
  • personal items like wallet, keys, lady items
  • student medications and forms
  • a folder with any required documents/forms
  • Your field trip information sheet.
  • Don’t forget a pen or two to write down the headcount before you head out the door and board the bus!

11 Hacks for a Stress-Free Field Trip

Well, those are my top 11 best tips for a mostly stress-free day! Remember, a field trip is meant to be fun, so be sure to prep your students and get yourself ready! The more prepared you are, the less stressed you’ll be on the day of!

Politics latest: Tony Blair 'still involved' in Middle East; Rwanda scheme resurfaces in unexpected fashion

Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair has told Sky's Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge he's "still involved" in the Middle East, as he outlined his desire for a ceasefire in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

Hereditary peers will not be banned from re-joining the Lords as life peers under government reforms to the upper chamber.

Abolishing the 92 seats reserved for hereditary members was one of Labour's manifesto commitments.

But Baroness Smith of Basildon, the leader of the Lords, today confirmed there could be a route back for those individuals - as life peers.

"I can confirm that if members leave this House as hereditary peers, there is no block at all of them coming back as life peers if their party so wishes to introduce them," Baroness Smith said.

A life peer is nominated by the prime minister, though by convention the Leader of the Opposition and other party leaders can propose a certain number.

Traditionally, the title is awarded to individuals on retirement from important public office and allows them to be a member of the House of Lords for life.

Former Labour MP Harriet Harman has called for the police to act "quicker" when it comes to their investigation into the Grenfell Tower fire.

The public inquiry into the west London blaze that saw 72 killed in 2017 delivered its final report on Wednesday.

It accused successive governments of "failing to act", despite knowing the risk of certain cladding and insulation, as well as criticising the "systematic dishonesty" of the firms behind the materials.

But speaking on Sky News' Electoral Dysfunction podcast , the Labour peer said the seven years the probe took was "too long" as she appealed for police to move faster with prosecutions.

"I'd be saying to the police, you've got to get on with your inquiry as quickly as possible," she said. "The idea that after seven years of a public inquiry, there's got to be another two years before they decide on prosecutions... you've got to crack on and do it quicker.

"Don't leave it till the end of 2026. People have waited long enough for that."

The chief executive of Thames Water has insisted he can rescue the debt-laden utility, which faces running out of cash in months if it cannot raise fresh equity.

Speaking after the environment secretary announced new legislation threatening water company bosses with jail alongside a review of the industry, Mr Weston told Sky News he was untroubled by the threat of prosecution, and confident he can turn around the troubled company.

"I need to digest what the secretary of state said today, I am completely aligned with what he's trying to do in cleaning up the rivers," he said.

"I'm focused, like he is, on getting investment and I will work with the secretary of state to do that. I am very encouraged by the tone I heard and I will work with him to try to do what he's outlined to do."

Asked directly if he could save Thames Water, he said: "I can save it."

With around £18bn of debt and cash reserves only until next May, Mr Weston is racing to raise fresh investment after existing shareholders withdrew plans for £3.5bn of fresh equity.

A topic of conversation on Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge tonight is a new law which will see stiffer penalties for water companies - and possible jail sentences for their bosses if they don't deal with sewage.

It's also the main topic on our latest Daily podcast.

Niall Paterson spoke to business correspondent Paul Kelso , who was there, for his assessment of what it could mean for the companies and bill payers.

Plus, as police investigating the Grenfell Tower fire warn it could be at least a year until they hand over evidence to prosecutors, Niall speaks to Chris Daw KC, author of Justice On Trial, on why it is going to take so long for the survivors and bereaved families to get justice.

Deputy political editor Sam Coates has listened to tonight's interview with Sir Tony Blair twice now.

Speaking to Sophy Ridge , Sam thinks he may have spotted a warning for the current Labour prime minister from his political predecessor.

Sam highlights a section where Sophy asked the New Labour architect about whether Sir Keir Starmer was radical enough.

Sam points out Sir Tony "compared his government and Keir's government" and claimed the 1997 administration had a series of easy wins with things like independence of the Bank of England, changing the rules on gay rights, and introducing the mayor of London.

Sir Tony then compared these to Sir Keir's "missions", Sam says, and that success will depend on those missions.

Sam goes on: "That's not an endorsement - each one of those things that [Sir Tony] did was a political risk, a huge political risk that he pushed through and got political credit for.

"And he's admitting that Keir Starmer doesn't have that kind of ambitious agenda.

"And he's saying, well, the missions will work if they work."

'A little bit of narcissism'

On a broader point, Sam says Sir Tony was advertising a "style" of government - building a good team - and then "telling Keir Starmer that's the model".

But our deputy political editor urged some scepticism, saying Sir Tony seemed to be advertising his institute that "sells help with governance to friendly - and other - governments all around the world".

"There was a little bit of, dare I say, narcissism in what we saw from Tony Blair today - because what he did was sit there and go: I know best, I'll tell you for a fee," Sam concludes.

For many, prime minister Sir Tony Blair's legacy is defined by his foreign policy decisions regarding the Middle East - most notably the Iraq war.

And he tells Sophy Ridge he's "still involved" in "quite a lot" regarding what's happening in the region now.

He was asked for his thoughts on Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu, who has found himself under increasing pressure from Western allies to do a ceasefire deal with Hamas.

Sir Tony wouldn't comment on "individual leaders" as "that wouldn't be very helpful to what I'm doing".

Without elaborating on what his role is, the former Labour leader says: "The most important thing is that we get a ceasefire that's sustainable and that we find a path back to some concept of security for the Israelis and self-determination for the Palestinians."

Speaking to tonight's  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge , former prime minister Sir Tony Blair is asked about an increase of "strong man" or "macho" leaders.

Sir Tony says he is "worried" about the trend - and that it's important to understand why it's happening.

The former leader - who famously proposed a "third way" of UK politics and advocated a centrist position - said the reason for the increase was the lack of a "strong centre that's delivering".

But he defends the centre as not "the mushy middle between left and right", but rather "the place of solutions".

Sir Tony claims politics and political allegiances have become "more fractured" - and this will only continue as technology develops, reducing voters' traditional loyalties to certain parties.

'Solutions beat strongmen'

He says: "The other thing that's going to happen is that people are, if there are grievances, they are going to expect you to deal with them.

"And the centre has got to be the place that you deal with them."

Sir Tony says it is no good to just say various groups are "extreme" and try to manage the problem that way.

"If you want to defeat this sort of strongman populism, they're defeated by the solutions," he says.

By Alexandra Rogers , political reporter

Sir Tony Blair has warned that tragedies such as the Grenfell Tower fire cannot be completely avoided.

The former prime minister, who left office in 2007, said it was a "difficult thing to say", but that even when systems work well and are "well-intentioned", people are "going to make mistakes".

Sir Tony was asked whether he accepted that the tragedies of Grenfell, the infected blood scandal and the Post Office scandal meant there had been a "failure of leadership" in government.

"This is a difficult thing to say, but it's the honest truth - however good your system is and however well-intentioned it is, and however hard people work, they're going to make mistakes," he replied.

It's fair to say there are some challenges facing the country.

We spend more on debt interest payments than schools, taxes are at their highest level for 70 years, prisons are full, and according to the prime minister, the NHS isn't on its knees but on its face.

And that's just the UK.

Zoom out and look at the world as a whole, I can't remember a more precarious, unpredictable period in my lifetime.

We're crying out not just for leadership, but the right kind of leadership.

One former PM thinks he's got at least some answers.

Sir Tony Blair has written a book On Leadership, which presumably means he's not impressed with what he's seeing.

He's a man I'm sure every single one of you will have an opinion on.

Over the next several posts, you can read the highlights of my interview with him today.

Mao's humiliation in moscow, 1949.

IN DECEMBER 1949, Mao finally made his trip to Moscow. Harrison Salisbury, of the New York Times, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting from Moscow in those days, remembered the shroud of silence that Stalin had already placed in the preceding months over the news of Mao's coming victory. There was virtually no mention of it in the controlled press; "a snippet on the back page of Pravda, or a few paragraphs inside Izvestia. The word 'China' hardly appeared." Now, with Mao on his way to Moscow, there was more open evidence of the cold Soviet shoulder. Stalin's seventieth birthday was self-evidently a great moment of celebration in the Communist world and an occasion not to be shared with any other event or person. On December 6, Mao set out by train for the Soviet capital. The war was barely over and he was fearful of attacks by Nationalist dissidents. He traveled in an armored car, with sentries posted every hundred meters along the tracks. In Shenyang, the largest city in the northeast, Mao disembarked and checked to see if there were posters of him. There were very few, it turned out, and a great many of Stalin—the work of Gao Gang, whom Mao saw as a pro-Soviet dissident. Mao was furious and ordered that the car carrying gifts for Stalin from Gao be uncoupled from the train and the gifts returned to him. Mao's arrival in Moscow on December 16 was an edgy one. He was treated not as the leader of a great revolution bringing into the Communist orbit one of the world's great nations but rather, as the historian Adam Ulam has written, ''as if he were, say, the head of the Bulgarian party." V. M. Molotov and Nikolai Bulganin, both senior politburo members, came to the station to meet him. Mao had laid out a handsome luncheon buffet. He asked the two Soviet leaders to have a drink with him. They refused—based on protocol, Molotov said. They also refused to sit and share the food. Then Mao asked them to accompany him to the residence where he was scheduled to stay. Again they refused. There was no major celebration or festive party for him. It was as if Mao was now to learn his place in Stalin's constellation, the real Communist universe; if he was a fraternal brother, then he should know that there would always be one Communist brother who was so much bigger than all the others. One of Khrushchev's aides told his boss that someone named "Matsadoon" was in town. "Who?" the perplexed Khrushchev asked. "You know that Chinaman," the aide answered. That was how they saw him: that Chinaman. And that was how they treated him. The main reception for the Chinese delegation was held not in the Main Hall of the Kremlin but in the old Metropole Hotel, "the usual place for entertaining visiting minor capitalist dignitaries," in Ulam's words. Things did not get better after the first reception. For days on end Mao was isolated, waiting for Stalin to arrange meetings. No one else could meet with him until Stalin had, and Stalin was taking his time. When Mao first arrived in Moscow, he announced that China looked forward to a partnership with Russia, but he emphasized as well that he wanted to be treated as an equal. Instead he was being taught a lesson each day. He had become, in Ulam's words, ''as much captive as guest." As such, he shouted at the walls, convinced that Stalin had bugged the house: "I am here to do more than eat and shit." He hated Russian food. At one point Kovalev, his contact man, dropped by to visit him. Mao pointed outside at Moscow and said, "Bad, bad!" What did he mean by that? Kovalev asked. Mao said he was angry at the Kremlin. Kovalev insisted he had no right to criticize "the Boss," and that he, Kovalev, would now have to make a report. When Stalin finally met Mao, they proved to have a remarkable mutual instinct for misunderstanding. "Why didn't you seize Shanghai?" Stalin asked, for the Chinese had taken their time before entering the city. "Why should we have?" Mao answered. "If we'd captured the city, we would have had to take on the responsibility for feeding the six million inhabitants." Stalin, already fearing that Mao favored peasants over workers, was appalled. Here was proof of it, workers in a city left to suffer. The trip to Moscow was in all ways a disaster, and Mao would have a long memory for the way he had been treated. In economic and military aid, he got very little from his negotiations on that first trip—a paltry $300 million in Soviet arms over five years, or $60 million a year. To make matters worse, there were also some Chinese territorial concessions that had to be thrown in. The lack of Russian generosity staggered the Chinese. "Like taking meat from the mouth of a tiger," Mao would say years later. For Mao, very much aware of the scale of his great triumph at home and what it meant in terms of history, the treatment by the Soviets had essentially been a humiliation, but one he had been forced to accept without complaint. "It is no wonder that Mao conceived, if he had not nurtured it before, an abiding hatred of the Soviet Union," Adam Ulam wrote.

this was a great excerpt to explain the significance of Mao and Stalin's first visit (and a harbinger for the frosty relations between the two for later years!)

Fascinating!
