Excellent tour! Elvis is a walking black history encyclopedia!

What an incredible tour! Just look at all the amazing sites that we got to visit! I loved doing the night tour because although it goes fast, you avoid the crowds and the heat.

As I sat in my nice air conditioned bus an and sipped my complimentary water I was glad I didn’t take the other tours in the middle of July during the muggiest part of summer. Worth the money!

Rachel is an amazing tour guide. Her knowledge about NYC is stunning. Very satisfying tour. It is a must for everyone who wants to know almost everything about NYC in one day!

Me and my friend did the day tour tour, omg what fun, so much info, seen places I didn't think about. So worth the money, I would so do again!

Our guide was outstanding. He was extremely knowledgeable and polite. And kudos to our bus driver for maneuvering effortlessly through NY traffic!

A Disney expert who charges $2,500 a day to guide VIPs through the parks shares how to get the most out of a visit

  • Michael Hewell founded Michael's VIPs, a private tour service for Disney World and other parks.
  • For $2,500 a day, Hewell or his guides seek to help families make the most of their visit.
  • Hewell says his strategies rely on knowing what's possible — not on cutting lines.

Insider Today

Michael Hewell, a 56-year-old Marine veteran, started working at Disney World after leaving college almost 30 years ago, intending to join its management training program. His first role at the park was as a ride attendant for the Haunted Mansion. One day, a singer came to do some research on the ride for a music video.

To observe every detail, the singer spent hours riding the Haunted Mansion in secret, always accessing the ride via its load area. To do so, he had to rely on Hewell to help him.

Hewell's efficient, cheerful manner caught the singer's attention so much that he asked for Hewell to act as his full-time assistant for the rest of the week, while he explored the park's other rides. "At the end of the week, they told the office, 'Michael is the best host I've ever had,'" Hewell told Insider.

In 1996, Hewell was then tapped to join Disney's VIP-relations department, a small team earmarked to handle visits from celebrities and dignitaries. Three years later, Hewell broke off on his own and started a word-of-mouth service for elite Disney-loving visitors called Michael's VIPs .

Today, Hewell and his team of 17 work with about 200 families a year. Rates start at $2,500 a day for a single guide who works with groups of up to eight people.

As the founder, Hewell reserves his personal tours for grandfathered-in clients or the highest of VIPS. Here's what it's like showing the rich and famous around Disney World.

Hewell is a lifelong Disney fan

Hewell was obsessed with Disney while growing up in West Palm Beach in South Florida. "I was a walking encyclopedia, and Walt was my hero — I modeled my life off all his encounters," he said.

In his future role at Disney, he said, VIP hosts were empowered to do whatever it took for their clients to enjoy their visit. "It was for celebrities, royal families, and friends of the corporation, and they backdoored everybody in part as it was the only way for them to experience the attractions without getting mobbed. That would also ruin the experience for the other guests."

But while he was in the Disney role, an article in a major media outlet that mentioned Disney's VIP service changed everything. The day it published, "we got 500 phone calls about it," he said. It rapidly morphed from a discreet service offered gratis to a pricey VIP machine that offered a formulaic high-end experience. It was this shift that caused Hewell to strike out on his own.

Disney's official VIP program is still operating; its website advertises peak-season rates starting at $7,000 a day for groups of up to 10 people. "I was just in line," Hewell said, recalling a recent experience, "and a woman behind us was complaining about having to pay so much money for a Disney guide — there were 12 of them, so they were paying $14,000 per day."

Related stories

Think of a weeklong trip to Disney like a safari, and conserve energy accordingly

Hewell is often contacted by a travel agent or a traveler directly who's planning a Disney trip . "We don't advertise anywhere," he said, "and it's mostly word of mouth — when you break into certain social circles, a certain private school, then you become the VIP service."

Once booked, he'll talk through a client's weeklong trip in advance on a Zoom call and then will plot out the visit accordingly. He often explains how his service works by likening the trip to a safari: Start early to see the animals or avoid the crowds, and then expect to be back at the hotel by lunchtime.

Hewell emphasized that none of his strategies involve bribing staffers or taking any frowned-upon shortcuts. "It's about knowing what's possible," he said, "And I know who to call, and what to ask for." For example, Hewell doesn't help clients cut lines to meet the characters — he'll set up a character meal or position the guests in the right part of the park to snag a photo when he knows the characters will walk by.

Hewell often works with the office that typically handles corporate groups of 300 or more; for an additional fee, families can tap their services, too — think a private roped-off area for desserts and drinks at the day-ending firework display. For most of his clients, cost isn't a factor when pursuing setups like this.

Knowing the ins and outs of all the parks

There are distinct visitor patterns , he said, and working around them is another insider move. "Never go to the Magic Kingdom on Monday," he said. "Most Americans get off work Friday, rest Saturday, fly Sunday, and that's always their first park."

He learned the rhythm of operations inside the park by chatting with ride attendants. "I'd introduce myself to cast members and say, 'Help me out, I'm trying to have the best possible day — could you answer all my questions about when to be where?'"

The focus of his work in Orlando has shifted since he started in the 1990s, though. Back then, Hewell worked almost entirely with visitors to Disney World, but since the Harry Potter attraction opened at Universal Studios , about 40% of clients also ask him to squire them around there.

Age requirements on rides mean these are often repeat clients, who've visited with their preschoolers and waited until they are 7 or older to venture there. Hewell does have a small operation at Disneyland in California, too, though the vast majority of his client base centers on Disney World.

He works independently of Disney and has no official affiliation with it. While on Disney property, Hewell's staff must remain invisible. "You're not allowed to advertise any other company on property, or wear anything that does, so we blend in with our guests," he said. "I do everything I can not to have a spotlight on us."

Business cratered early in the pandemic, but it's bounced back

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Hewell went from a guide roster of 28 to just two once the parks reopened. Hewell has slowly rebuilt his team via a training program that takes a minimum of three months.

When he's hiring a new guide, passion for Mickey Mouse is less important than attitude. "The vast majority have no knowledge of anything Disney, but they work in the service industry, so they know how to take care of people," he said. "You can train anybody to know where so and so is, but you can't train personality and attitude."

He's also seen a major shift in his clients as a result of COVID-19: The families are much closer .

"Prior to the pandemic," he said, "the father was a businessman on the phone all day, and perhaps the nannies were closer to the children than their mother or father, but coming out of COVID-19 the families are so close now."

Whatever the travelers' makeup, his guests have one thing in common: They have more money than time.

"The wealthiest percentile doesn't want to come to Disney anymore because it's such a huge hassle, and there's nobody to help them," Hewell said. "That's my niche."

This Interactive Map Shows When Fall Foliage Will Peak Across the U.S. in 2024

Time to start planning your leaf peeping trips.

Attention leaf peepers: It's your time to shine. Fall foliage season is right around the bend, and SmokyMountains.com is back with its interactive map that promises to give travelers the most accurate data on where and when the leaves will turn their vibrant kaleidoscope of colors.

According to the site, it uses a "refined data model that depends on a combination of factors," including both historical and forecasted temperature and precipitation readings, the unique tree types in each geographic region, and even user-generated data, which the team says is the real game-changer.

"A couple of years ago, we introduced the capability for end-users to provide real-time leaf reports that will impact both updates and future models," the website shared in a release provided to Travel + Leisure. "However, similar to any meteorological forecast that is dependent on weather variables, the leaf predictions are not 100% accurate. This is why we added the ability for end-users to submit real-time photos last year as well. After publishing our predictive fall foliage map for nearly a decade, we are confident in our data sources, process, and algorithm."

So, when will things peak in the 2024 fall foliage season? According to the website, Tennessee will see its foliage peak in late October, from October 21-October 25.  Things will light up a little earlier across New England, with Maine seeing its peak at the end of September and into early October. Vermont and New Hampshire are both expected to experience their peaks in early October, between Oct. 7 and Oct. 11. (Though parts of New Hampshire will also see their best colors even earlier, between Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.)  Further south, Massachusetts and Rhode Island will see their peak foliage come in around Oct. 7 through Oct. 14. New York is also expected to see its peak around the same time, between Oct. 7 and Oct. 11.  Around the nation, in Washington State, Virginia, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Maryland, peepers expect to see the leaves begin changing around mid to late October, peaking toward the end of the month,  And in Colorado, the leaves are expected to begin to change toward the end of September, with the peak hitting between Oct. 14 and Oct. 25. Ready to plot out your fall foliage getaway? First, check out the interactive map at SmokyMountains.com , then peep our list of the 22 best places to see fall foliage around the U.S. for a little more inspiration.

Rome floats plan to charge tourists at Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain has an overtourism problem, but locals aren’t sure restrictions are the solution.

dc travel vip

After yet another summer of overtourism woes in Italy , officials in Rome are considering new measures to limit crowds at the Trevi Fountain, one of the country’s most famous sites.

Alessandro Onorato, a tourism councilor for Rome, said in an email to The Washington Post that the government wants to implement a timed ticket system to access the basin of the fountain, “a monument that needs to be protected and preserved.” The ticket would be free for Romans and a “symbolic price” of 1 or 2 euros for travelers.

“We want to make a visit to the Trevi Fountain truly a unique and serene experience, without shoulder-to-shoulder with other tourists or pushing our way in,” Onorato said. “And we also want to prevent visitors from eating on the steps, a sandwich or an ice cream, or worse, from jumping into the water.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alessandro Onorato (@alessandro_onorato)

Reuters reported that Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, said such a plan was a “concrete” possibility and that Italy’s tourism minister, Daniela Santanchè, was open to a program for controlling visitation at the fountain similar to that at the Pantheon. The Italian Culture Ministry debuted a 5-euro ticket system at the Pantheon last year.

Tourism hit record numbers in Italy in 2023, and the country’s popularity shows no signs of waning. Next year, the Vatican is celebrating a “Jubilee” year, which takes place every quarter-century. The 2025 Jubilee is expected to bring an additional 30 million pilgrims to Rome, the Associated Press reported .

The impending influx “does make it worth considering some way to control the crowds,” said Kathy McCabe , host of the travel show “Dream of Italy” on PBS.

McCabe has fond memories of visiting the Trevi Fountain decades ago when there were, at most, a few handfuls of people appreciating the baroque masterpiece. Today, it’s a different experience , with masses of tourists crammed around the perimeter jockeying for a view or selfie.

McCabe says the fountain, like the name of her show, represents the dream of Italy, “of what it once was and what we hope it would be,” she said. And at the same time, it’s the reality of Italy: a place struggling to cope with its immense popularity.

She’s conflicted about crowd mitigation measures but understands where city officials are coming from.

“Maybe it’s something they could just do in the high season,” she said. “But like in many places across Europe, almost every month is high season now in Rome.”

Unlike the Pantheon — a former Roman temple that visitors now pay to go inside — the Trevi Fountain is an open-air destination nestled in the meeting of three roads that melds into the neighborhood. Critics of the proposed ticketing system say cordoning off the fountain would be disruptive.

“Moving through the streets is already so unpleasant due to the numerous bottlenecks,” said Katie Parla , a Rome-based author and tour guide who has lived in the city for more than 21 years.

She added, “I don’t think that visitors or locals will benefit from constricting a very, very intensely trafficked part of the city.”

Flavio Scannavino, general manager of the Hotel De’ Ricci , located about a mile from the Trevi Fountain, agrees that it’s difficult to get around the city during high season because of the throng of visitors. He welcomes a way to better regulate the flow of foot traffic, especially ahead of the Jubilee.

However, Scannavino calls any proposed fee to see the fountain “in bad taste.”

“I don’t think it’s right that the people have to pay to enjoy this beauty,” he said.

Parla also believes such limitations are antithetical to the essence of the fountain, which was inaugurated as a work of public art commissioned by Pope Clement XII in the 18th century.

“And yet, access to the Trevi Fountain for local residents is increasingly complicated by the enormous hordes of tourists that start even at 6 in the morning these days — which is pretty unprecedented,” she said.

Simone Amorico, CEO of the private tour operator Access Italy , passed by the fountain on Thursday afternoon. Even in September, after the peak summer rush has come and gone from the city, “it’s the busiest place in Rome,” he said of the site. “It’s very crowded, even in low season.”

Amorico isn’t sure whether any effort to restrict access will pass, particularly in the timeline proposed by Onorato.

Rules are “not easy to change” in Italy, he said.

But he’s in favor of any effort to regulate the fountain. Echoing Santanchè, he pointed to the recent changes at the Pantheon.

“There was overtourism there, too, but now you need to book a time slot and it’s a lot better, actually,” he said. “There has to be some sort of prevention against overtourism in these popular monuments.”

Parla said the Pantheon changes haven’t been perfect, calling the process of buying admission a “mess” because of a complicated website and a confusing ticket office location.

“I’m not encouraged by the sort of precursor to this and just generally don’t agree with charging for public art,” she said.

Parla would rather see the city come up with a strategic communication plan to market other less-visited historic sites , such as Museum of the Palazzo Massimo or the Basilica of Sant’Agostino .

Your Hotel Is on Strike. What Should You Do?

With hotel chains and union members locked in a dispute over wages and working conditions, strikes could continue to disrupt travel in major U.S. destinations. Here’s what to know.

People walking a picket line outside the glass doorway to a Hilton hotel. Many of them are wearing red shirts and carrying signs that read, “On strike.”

By Derek M. Norman

Over the busy Labor Day weekend, at least 10,000 unionized front-desk workers, housekeepers and other employees at dozens of hotel properties across the country walked off the job after failing to come to an agreement in contract negotiations.

The mostly two- and three-day strikes affected some Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Fairmont hotels in nine destinations, including Baltimore; Boston; Greenwich, Conn.; Honolulu; Kauai, Hawaii; San Diego; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; and Seattle.

With members of the UNITE HERE union at Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Omni properties across the country still engaged in contentious talks over wages and working conditions, rolling strikes could possibly disrupt travel plans for months to come.

Hotels chains say they plan to keep affected properties open, perhaps with modified services. But they may not always notify travelers that a strike is happening, so inquire ahead of time, or you may be surprised to find a spirited picket line in front of your hotel when you arrive.

Here’s what else you need to know.

There’s a strike at the hotel where I have a reservation. What should I do?

First, call the hotel and ask to speak to a manager to confirm that a strike is taking place there. UNITE HERE has also created a website, FairHotel.org , that offers an updated map of which properties are experiencing labor disputes. Ask the manager which services are being affected by the strike, and ask about the hotel’s cancellation policy.

Then decide if you still want to stay at the hotel.

Besides weighing the effect on services, consider your feelings about the dispute itself, said Bjorn Hanson, an adjunct professor at the New York University Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality. Some travelers like to support the business and keep their reservation at the property, Dr. Hanson said. Others prefer to support the striking workers by not crossing a picket line.

If you choose not to stay at the affected hotel, he said, you should first book new accommodations and then call your original hotel as soon as possible to cancel.

In the case of past strikes, Dr. Hanson said, “Individual hotels have some discretion, but the hotel company policy was: Whatever our cancellation policy is, is the policy we will maintain during the strike. So at the very least, that is what the regular, average traveler should keep in mind and plan around,” he said.

The cancellation policy at Hilton , Hyatt , Marriott and Omni hotels generally depends on your specific rate and dates of your stay, so you’ll need to look up your reservation on their app or website.

Will my hotel stay open during the strike?

In general, hotels say they are prepared to operate without disruption.

Representatives for Hyatt, Hilton and Omni all said that they had contingency plans to minimize any strikes’ impact on hotel operations. Marriott did not respond to request for comment.

While the chains would not reveal details of those plans, they are likely to use nonunion employees, Dr. Hanson said. They might also, for example, substitute a grab-and-go buffet for table service. And outside contractors may be hired to perform services that hotel staff would typically perform.

During another recent major hotel strike, last summer in Los Angeles, thousands of hotel workers walked off the job just as travelers were gearing up for the Fourth of July. That first strike was resolved after three days . Sporadic walkouts at other properties throughout the summer affected housekeeping services for some guests and caused disruptions after event organizers canceled events .

What are the sticking points in the talks?

Hotel workers are calling for higher wages, as well as the reversal of Covid-era staffing and service cuts. Housekeepers at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor , for example, are asking for a raise to $20 an hour from $16.20 now.

During the pandemic, the union said, many hotels cut staffing and guest services like daily housekeeping and room service , which caused some workers to lose income and also created a heavier workload for the remaining employees.

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of hotel properties that were on strike as of Sunday afternoon. It was 24, not more than 25.
