The Office Remake Trailer Reveals A New Cast Of Disgruntled Characters

There's 1 thing the office reboot must absolutely not repeat from the original show, george actor is unrecognizable in georgie & mandy’s sequel set image reunion with his young sheldon kids.

Two veteran cast members of  The Office   have spilled the beans on the classic early episode, "Booze Cruise", revealing a true story that includes a major milestone for the series, a real-life celebration, and several series regulars almost getting lost at sea.  The Office  season 2, episode 11 famously saw the  characters of Dunder Mifflin embark on a late-night "motivational" cruise on Lake Wallenpaupack—in the dead of winter. Directed by Ken Kwapis, "Booze Cruise" was an important episode for the cast and crew when it premiered in 2006, marking several key changes that would allow  The Office  to move past the anxiety-ridden uncertainty of being a young, unproven sitcom in its early years.

The popularity of "Booze Cruise" has endured thanks to its many entertaining plots, both big and small, each amplified by the unique setting of  The Office 's first on-location shoot. Among the season 2 episode's more memorable scenes are Roy (David Denman) finally setting a date for his wedding with Pam (Jenna Fischer), Jim breaking up with short-term girlfriend Katy (Amy Adams) in a surprisingly cold response, and of course Jim (John Krasinksi) and Pam 's uncomfortable 27 seconds of silence on the deck of the ship. Lighter gags include Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) awkward dance, Dwight (Rainn Wilson) fake-steering the boat, and the ship captain—played by actual Marine Corps veteran Rob Riggle—sneaking away to make out with Meredith (Kate Flannery).

While  The Office season 2 classic "Booze Cruise" features no shortage of scenes permanently burned into the minds of long-time fans, the behind-the-scenes details might be even more interesting than the episode itself. A new book from Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey,  The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There , is an expansion of the duo's popular podcast and provides some fascinating insight into the  early seasons of  The Office . This includes an entire chapter dedicated to "Booze Cruise", which Fischer and Kinsey reveal was shot over three long nights aboard a boat "just outside of Long Beach harbor" , as the actual Lake Wallenpaupack experiences frigid temperatures in January. In addition to making several cast members seasick, the episode was also a major turning point for  The Office  and everyone involved.

The Office Cast Members Actually Had A Reason To Party

Due to working every day from 3:00 PM to sunrise, the cast of  The Office  was understandably exhausted during filming for "Booze Cruise", but an unexpected wave of phone calls quickly turned the environment into a party scene. Prior to and including  The Office  season 2, episode 11 the majority of the sitcom's actors were still technically considered  "guest stars" , which according to Jenna Fischer meant that  "NBC was under no obligation to include their characters in all the episodes, and they could be written out of the show at any time."  The only  members of  The Office   under contract as series regulars were Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, B.J. Novak, and Fischer herself. However, NBC sent out notice mid-shoot offering  The Office 's cast members new contracts as full-time series regulars going forward, prompting immediate calls from everyone's representation.

"I was standing on the dance floor of the boat with Kate [Flannery] and Brian [Baumgartner], waiting to do a scene, when suddenly our phones started buzzing," recalls Angela in The Office BFFs  book. "Our agents were calling us all at the same time. I immediately wanted to find Jenna and tell her. She would know more than anyone what this meant to me. I saw her standing on the dock outside, and I ran down the gangway toward her hollering and waving my arms. The whole set was one big joyful celebration."  Taking on the rest of the show's cast as series regulars represented an important change for  The Office ,  but surprisingly, it wasn't the only milestone that "Booze Cruise" reached in 2006.

"Booze Cruise" Marked A Comedy Milestone For The Office

Prior to  The Office  season 2, episode 11 the show originally ran during NBC's Tuesday night block in the 9:30 PM timeslot. Jenna Fischer noted that "ratings were a struggle"  during those first two seasons, and the timeslot didn't help the perception that the network could cancel the attempted U.S. reboot at any moment. "Booze Cruise" helped change all that, as  The Office  moved from Tuesday nights to NBC's coveted Thursday night comedy lineup.  Fischer added, " Over time, our numbers improved, and with the move to Thursday, it felt like we were hitting the big time. Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends, Will and Grace, Scrubs... these are all successful comedies that aired on Thursday nights on NBC. The move indicated to all of us that NBC might just have confidence in our little show."

Jim & Pam's 27 Seconds Of Silence Almost Didn't Happen

"Booze Cruise" is a crucial episode for Jim and Pam early in The Office 's run. Until that point their feelings for one another were largely kept to the many flirtatious interactions that took place at Pam's desk. Jim's obviously emotional reaction to her engagement and rather immediate breakup with Katy turned the show's many teases into a full-blown problem for the two that they would have to address. Towards the end of the episode, Jim and Pam meet on the deck of the ship and share a strikingly elongated and awkward moment, lovingly dubbed by fans as the The Office 's "27 seconds of silence". However, the famous season 2 scene could have easily turned out differently, as the episode's script only said "they looked at each other" , with no further notes.

Showrunner Greg Daniels and the episode's directors had encouraged Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski to take their time filming the scene, and allow it to play out naturally. Fischer reflected on the moment, stating, "There is no dialogue, but a lot goes on in those twenty-seven seconds. You see Jim thinking, but not saying, so many different things. You see Pam trying to signal to him that she wants to hear his feelings, but she doesn't say anything either." Daniels actually had to fight the network to keep the entire scene in the episode as-is, and it ended up becoming one of Pam and Jim's most crucial early moments together.

The Office Cast Nearly Got Lost At Sea During "Booze Cruise"

While the first two nights of shooting for "Booze Cruise" took place with the boat docked in the harbor, the final night saw  The Office  cast and crew head out to the open seas in order to secure the episode's external boat scenes. The aforementioned awkward silence between Pam and Jim was the last scene on the schedule, meaning that the rest of the cast had already wrapped for the week, but remained on board waiting to go home. In an effort to accommodate the cast, an offer was made to transport people back to land in small boats described as "little dinghies" with small, hand-steered motors. Only four members of  The Office  actually took up the offer to head back early using the precarious little rafts: Rainn Wilson, Brian Baumgartner, Phyllis Smith, and Angela.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the crew still aboard the boat, those four stars almost got lost at sea! The whole trip back to land was supposed to take a total of 10 minutes, but about halfway through the dinghy's engine died, leaving The Office actors  all stranded. "It was pitch-dark, and the water around us looked like black glass," noted Angela. Funny enough, showrunner Greg Daniels was only aware that Phyllis had gotten on one of the small boats, and had no idea the others were also missing. After drifting for about 20 minutes, huddled together for warmth, a rescue dinghy came to take them all back to the boat, presenting its own set of obstacles as the actors had to carefully fllop from one dinghy to the next without falling into the ocean in the middle of the night. Unfortunately for The Office   star Angela Kinsey, her transportation issues didn't end there, as her 12-year-old Chevy Blazer broke down in the middle of an intersection shortly afterward—but at least it all made for a compelling end to a chapter in her book many years later.

Booze Cruise - The Office (Season 2, Episode 11)

booze cruise jim and pam

It opens with a classic prank: Jim puts Dwight's office supplies in the vending machine. (Jim knows the vending machine guy.) Dwight, who is broke, has no way to buy his supplies. Jim hands him a baggie full of nickels.

The staff eagerly awaits for Michael to come to work and tell them where they are going this afternoon. You see, Michael sent out a memo stating that the staff should pack for their "first quarter camaraderie event" and to bring a toothbrush, a swimsuit, rubber soled shoes and a ski mask.

Michael eventually confesses that it is a cruise (in January) on Lake Wallenpaupack, and it will be a party, a leadership training exercise, and a mind-blowing experience.

Jim bets the camera that Michael will stand on the front of the boat and yell "I'm king of the world" in the first hour.

While boarding the ship, the captain quickly pulls rank and deflates Michael. Jim wins his bet as Michael does yell, "I'm king of the world".

Jim, Katie, Roy, and Pam are sitting together. Roy and Katie are getting along great and Pam and Jim keep giving each other looks.

Annoyed with Dwight, Captain Jack asks Dwight if he'd like to steer the ship. Dwight is excited. Captain Jack shows Dwight to the front of the boat where there is a fake wheel. Dwight is pleased.

Katie and Darryl cheer on Roy as he does his snorkel shot. Pam, not impressed, refuses to do one and asks Roy to go somewhere quieter. Roy, drunk, doesn't budge. He needs to see Darryl do his snorkle shot. So Pam and Jim leave together to go to the deck.

On the deck, Pam confesses that she just doesn't get Roy. Jim looks around to make sure they are alone and then he and Pam make eye contact. They stare at each other for several seconds until Pam breaks it to tease Jim about Katie. Clearly, Jim doesn't want to lose this moment and continues to stare into her eyes. He wants to say something. Pam, sensing this may be the case, says she's cold and goes inside. Jim is disappointed.

In talking to Captain Jack, Roy seems to have a moment of drunken clarity and takes the microphone and declares a wedding date. Pam is thrilled.

While outside, watching everyone slow dance, Katie askes Jim if he thinks they'll ever get married. Jim very quickly answers no and Katie is upset. Jim breaks up with her.

Meredith and Captain Jack go at it, sexually, pretty good in the steering room. However, Michael with his business / ship metaphors, scares the non-employee passangers on the ship and they start jumping overboard. This interrupts Captain Jack and Meredith so he puts Michael in the brig.

On the deck, Jim, heartbroken, confesses his feelings for Pam to Michael. Michael does what he has tried to do all night. He motivates Jim to not give up. Engaged ain't married.

A Timeline of Jim & Pam's Relationship on "The Office," in GIFs

The driving force of the show, chronicled.

Jim Halpert is the king of the friend zone. When we first met the coworkers of The Office , he was just a guy, who had a crush on a girl, who had a boyfriend. By the end, that had changed a bit.

The mockumentary of ordinary office employees hooked us for two reason: Michael Scott ’s ( Steve Carell ) blundering, and Jim ( John Krasinski ) and Pam ( Jenna Fischer ).

Some fans claimed the show jumped the shark when the receptionist and the salesman finally got together, that it robbed the show if its driving conflict.

One thing is for certain: It's time for The Office to end, and we're sad to see it go. Let's reminisce with A Timeline of Jim & Pam's Relationship on The Office .

Charmingly beta male paper salesman Jim Halpert lingers constantly at the desk of Pam Beesly's, office receptionist. He really does know how to make copies, but they're best friends. That is, until her burly fiancé Roy comes in from his job in the warehouse. Jig's up.

Not Available Interstitial

Rival salesman (and royal pain in the ass) Dwight steals a big commission from Jim, but he still calls it "not a bad day" after Pam falls asleep during a meeting. Perhaps his interest isn't so one-sided.

Pranking dwight.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim and Pam bond over an elaborate prank on Dwight. It's surprisingly easy to get Dunder Mifflin's top salesman to hide in an box in the warehouse. Don't worry, he cut air holes.

Basketball rivalry.

Not Available Interstitial

When Michael organizes a basketball game between the office and the warehouse, Jim gets a little competitive with burly Roy. Unfortunately, Roy still gets the girl. Dwight wears a face mask, obviously.

Chili's.

Pam totally felt God in that Chili's during the Dundies, the bizarre awards ceremony for Dunder Mifflin employees put on by boss Michael Scott. Pam just wanted to show Jim how excited she was for winning "Whitest Sneakers." Right.

Dundies part 2.

OK, maybe she was over-served. But drunk words are sober thoughts, right?

Not Available Interstitial

Jim often dies of boredom at work, and it's usually up to Pam to revive him. While Michael and Dwight are away, a game of Office Olympics seems like the right thing to fight a case of the Mondays. They play Flonkerton—the national sport of Icelandic paper companies. Less popular? Pam Pong.

Not Available Interstitial

A prank on Dwight backfires when Pam hurts Jim's feelings by suggesting he take a better job. "Seriously, if you left here, I would blow my brains out," she confesses. But, you know, that's just a common expression. Between friends.

Awkward touching.

Michael is the world's worst confidant. The pair goes to Hooters, because that's the best place for a great heart-to-heart. Eventually, Jim is forced to tell Pam he “used to" have a crush on her. Sure.

Not Available Interstitial

See, but Pam's got dreams of being an artist. Jim supports these dreams, but burly Roy doesn't. Seems like a clear choice, right?

Reunited, and it feels so "meh." Sorry, Pam; if you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam takes the high road and helps Jim and Karen though a rough spot in their budding relationship, but she isn't as OK as she seems. And no, it's not PMS.

Phyllis' wedding.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam leaves Phyllis' wedding with burly Roy after watching Jim and Karen together. And can we just mention that Pam and Roy's "song" is basically the most depressing Jewel song ever. Fail.

Pam finally gets the courage to tell Jim she called off her wedding for him, despite burning her feet on hot coals. Karen is not amused.

Friendships.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim goes to New York to interview for a job at corporate. Pam sneaks him a note of encouragement from Season 1. Yogurt lid = turn down big promotion, apparently.

Jim teases Pam about asking her to marry him, but he's not joking. He got the engagement ring a week after they started dating. THIS IS INSANE, but also cute.

Toby's going away party.

Not Available Interstitial

Michael throws a huge party to celebrate the departure of his nemesis, HR rep Toby, for Costa Rica, and Jim pays for fireworks so it's extra romantic when he proposes to Pam. Preppy salesman Andy ruins it when he takes the opportunity to propose to a very reluctant Angela.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam starts a three-month design program in New York, and they don't want to start their engagment apart, right?

Real proposal.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam fails art school, and faces another three months in New York. Instead, she comes home. 'Cause Jim's not the boss of her.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim buys Pam his parents' house so they can retire. Unfortunately, it's full of shag carpeting, wood paneling, and a super creepy clown painting that is integral to the structural integrity of the house. It's a testament to their relationship that she still loves it.

Pam's parents.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim accidentally breaks up Pam's parents by telling her dad how much he loves her, and how he feels when she walks in a room. It's OK, though, because Jim and Pam are soulmates. (This episode also involves Jack Black making out with Cloris Leachman. Seriously.)

Not Available Interstitial

Jim is the king of the meaningful gift (ahem, teapot), so for once, Pam goes all out and makes him a Jim Halpert comic book.

Not Available Interstitial

And instead of pebbles from the beach in Jamaica, he surprises her with jewelry. It's like a reverse Gift of the Magi. Or something.

Valentine's day.

Not Available Interstitial

It's Valentine's Day, and after a champagne lunch, Jim and Pam realize they're basically the only ones who have never done it in the office.

Valentine's day 2.

Not Available Interstitial

So they decide to take a little walk...over to Ryan's closet office.

Valentine's day 3.

Not Available Interstitial

Yeah, a walk. Here comes baby No. 2!

Not Available Interstitial

The office is in a frenzy over a list made by new boss Robert California. Pregnant Pam gets pretty upset when she turns up on the loser side, until she see Jim's list: Pam, Cece, and the new baby one one side, everything else on the other. Does he just have a drawer full of grand gestures?

Maternity leave.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam enlists Dwight's help to see if Jim is attracted to her replacement. Dwight decides to do this by testing for boners, obviously (it's soft).

Tallahassee.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim is sent to Tallahassee along with Dwight and new girl Kathy for a special project. "That marriage is not  good," she tells a friend. "Definitely we will. It's three weeks in Tallahassee, what else is there to do?" The chick isn't subtle.

Not Available Interstitial

Like, AT ALL. Jim loves Pam, so just take your homewrecking ways elsewhere.

Family portrait.

Not Available Interstitial

Dwight sets up free family portraits, and Jim is convinced he just wants to do something terrible to Cece and Phillip. Luckily, they bring in the kids anyway and look adorable, even though Jim is on the lookout for Dwight bringing the crazy.

Camera crew.

Not Available Interstitial

The documentary about Dunder Mifflin is coming to a close, and Jim and Pam assure the crew that they have enough footage—nothing will be changing for them. FALSE! The show will try to convince us that Jim and Pam are going to break up. But we all know that is impossible.

Roy's wedding.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim and Pam go to Roy's wedding, where he's a completely changed man from the violent, thoughtless fiancé she once knew. They get worried they know too much about each other, which is really just manufacturing couple problems. Stop it!

Not Available Interstitial

Jim has the opportunity to start a sports marketing company in Philly—aka his dream. The problem? He doesn't tell Pam about it until afterward. Now this  is an actual issue.

Not Available Interstitial

With Jim spending a few days a week in Philadelphia, Pam is essentially playing the part of a single mother—with a full-time job and two young children. It's not pretty.

Darryl's interview.

Not Available Interstitial

Pam gets the chance to visit Jim at his new company when Darryl, a Dunder Mifflin employee, goes in for an interview. Darryl totally kills a bunch of fish, but somehow Pam's the one who feels awkward.

Not Available Interstitial

The reason? Pam realizes she may have to move her family to Philadelphia. Uhh duh—what did she think a job in Philly meant?

Cece's recital.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim misses Cece's ballet recital, and Pam messes up the video. Somehow this causes Jim to yell at her for like the first time ever. We get it, the new job is stressful. But it's stressful for Pam, too.

Not Available Interstitial

Enter rugged boom mic operator Brian.

Not Available Interstitial

Brian rescues Pam from the vandal who defaced her mural. It's obvious he's in love with her, and Jim's away...

Not Available Interstitial

At dinner, Brian reveals that he and his wife are getting divorced. Convenient! They realized it was over when they stopped fighting.

Stay and fight.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim's going to go back to Philly so they don't fight on Valentine's Day, but Pam won't let him. Thank GOD. Stop toying with our emotions!

Not Available Interstitial

The office documentary is finally coming out, and in the promos, Jim and Pam are billed as the lovers. "Some of us have changed so much," she says. Noooo! Remember, Pam!

Counseling 1.

Not Available Interstitial

After the couple decide to go to marriage counseling, Jim confesses to Toby that if Pam won't move to Philly, it's probably over. What?! This can't be the Jim Halpert we know and love.

Counseling 2.

Not Available Interstitial

This is bad.

Three things.

Not Available Interstitial

Counseling is helping, but Pam is honest about her feelings about Jim's job, which is not what he wants to hear. And then this happens, interspersed with scenes from their wedding because the writers obviously just want us to break down. It worked.

Not Available Interstitial

Jim returns to Scranton to rekindle his romance with Pam. It works! This was almost too  easy.

More important.

Not Available Interstitial

That is, until there's a big opportunity at his company in Philly. Darryl tells Jim they'll be traveling around the country. "This is everything," he says, but Jim refuses. Pam overhears from the bathroom.

Not Available Interstitial

When Darryl tells Pam everything Jim's missing out on, she confesses to Jim that she's afraid she's not enough for him. A few seasons ago, we would have said she's crazy, but Jim has really been a douche for a few eps.

Not Available Interstitial

To prove to her she is enough, Jim enlists the help of the film crew to make a montage for Pam. PB&J's Greatest Hits! You can add your favorite cheesy love song.

Not Available Interstitial

He also gives her the teapot letter he wrote in Season 1.

The Office : “Booze Cruise”/“The Injury”

The A.V. Club launched TV Club in 2007, which meant we missed out on recapping earlier seasons of a few of our favorite shows. In some cases—like the retrospective recap that follows—we’ve gone back to fill in the gaps.

“Booze Cruise” (season two, episode 11; originally aired 1/5/2006)

  • James McAvoy says Joaquin Phoenix "ditched" Split two weeks before filming
  • Frasier returns with the same flaws and a few slight tweaks
  • Industry makes our jaws drop to the floor

In which, you know what? Jim would save the receptionist …

(Available on Hulu and Netflix .)

  • Apple TV+ stops the Time Bandits after one season
  • What's on TV this week— The Penguin , Agatha All Along , American Sports Story

There are passages of The Office ’s second season that alleviate any sense that the employees of Dunder Mifflin are trapped, episodes like “Office Olympics” or “Christmas Party” that bring out the aspects of the Scranton Business Park that aren’t slowly sucking away its inhabitants’ souls. There needed to be a hint of escape in the show. Their onscreen lives revolve around the workplace, but as subsequent seasons explored (to varying degrees of success), there’s more for them outside the parking-lot gates.

And yet “Booze Cruise” derives so much of its power from confinement. There’s only one way out of Michael’s nautical team-building exercise: Into the chilly depths of Lake Wallenpaupack. The episode differentiates itself from other on-location Office s because the characters have no choice but to come face-to-face with uncomfortable situations. Fittingly, this felt most acutely by the character who feels most confined by his job. With nowhere else to go but the freezing exterior of the boat, Jim is forced to watch as Roy and Pam finally set a date for their wedding. He then makes matters worse for himself by being the jerk who dumps a woman (Amy Adams in her final appearance as Katy) while they’re both, essentially, stranded on a large body of water. These are the types of stressors he can’t relieve by raising his eyebrows at The Documentarians.

Both parts of this week’s Office doubleheader illustrate the show’s shifting priorities. They’re both gut-bustingly hilarious at times, but with “Booze Cruise” in particular, the show’s heartfelt, relationship-drama side is coming into bloom. The tension in that “What’s it like dating a cheerleader?” scene between Jim and Pam is ’shipper catnip, so adept at toying with emotions that even Greg Daniels (who based the episode’s script on an anecdote from B.J. Novak) found himself screaming “Kiss her!” in the editing bay.

With all that going on, “Booze Cruise” is also a reminder that, at certain points, The Office was Steve Carell’s show. The episode affords the actor and his character two lengthy spotlight sequences—the “leader-ship” talk in the conference room and the dance contest aboard the Lake Wallenpaupack Princess —where Michael isn’t so much imparting wisdom to his employees as he is milking his camera time. The dance-contest scene is a fine use of the documentary setup, and it’s also the one truly great sequence with a direct analog in the U.K. Office . They’re deployed for similar purposes: In “Charity,” David Brent dances to upstage corporate slickster Neil; in “Booze Cruise,” Michael wants to get back in front of the office retreat for which he was too cheap to book a private cruise. In the process, he’s playing to two audiences—the people on the boat and the imagined audience of the documentary—convinced that both will by impressed by his wild gyrations and dictionary definition of “dancing.” The unspoken reactions of his fellow passengers tell a different story.

Challenges to Michael’s authority often lifted Carell’s performance to new heights, so it makes sense that he’s especially good when those challenges are coming from multiple angles. There’s Captain Jack and his effortless leadership, but there’s also Brenda, the mostly silent emissary from corporate who’s looking over Michael’s shoulder throughout “Booze Cruise.” The character exists in a nebu-los space herself, serving the same role as Jan but not contributing enough to the story to make any sort of impression. Part of me wonders if Melora Hardin was unavailable; another part makes me thinks adding some Michael-Jan drama would lock up a well-oiled machine of an episode. And then there’s the part of me that knows the way The Office liked to draw these things out and thinks “Oh yeah—Brenda needs to be there as a knock-off Jan because the genuine article is putting as much space between herself and Michael as possible.”

And besides, there’s a more appropriate one-off foil being played by Rob Riggle, who manages to spark an immediate and satisfying rivalry with The Office ’s star. Captain Jack taps directly into Michael’s control issues, bringing out a heightened version of the guy who fights so desperately to steer every discussion in the conference room. There’s a bit of a conference-room vibe to the declarations Michael tacks on to Captain Jack’s announcements, starting with a claim he could almost back up (“And I’m your party captain, too!”) before veering into outright lies (“I can marry you as regional manager of Dunder Mifflin!”). By the time he’s mixing motivational analogies with Titanic plot lines, it’s evident that the rest of the world isn’t prepared for the Michael Scott style of management.

Michael spends all of “Booze Cruise” trying to motivate his staff, but he’s going about it the wrong way. He’s not Captain Jack, and he’s not the boss of dancing—he’s a guy who did a job well enough to receive a promotion, but the regional manager’s chair is the largest seat of authority he’s qualified to fill. And even then he’s usually out of his depths, relying on hackneyed analogies and borrowed advice to lead his troops. If there’s anything about Rob Riggle’s character that truly gets under his skin, it’s the fact that Jack has legitimate guidance to offer, informed by different life circumstances than Michael’s. When he’s giving pointers to Roy, he’s doing so to someone he doesn’t even know—Michael can’t speak half that knowledgeably to people with whom he spends 40 hours a week.

Except, that is, when he’s speaking from the heart. The most important moment of “Booze Cruise” isn’t the dance contest or Roy setting the wedding date or Dwight “steering” the ship—it’s Michael putting all his bullshit aside to motivate, inspire, and cheer up a colleague. Hands tied, captain’s cap stripped away, all he has are his instincts. His advice to Jim—“Never ever, ever, ever give up”—still reeks of cliché, but it also hits the target Michael’s been aiming for all episode. The next line—“It’s a fake wheel, dummy”—consciously cuts through the treacle, but the sentiment lingers. “Booze Cruise” is a culmination of several threads, but it’s the beginning of a new phase in Jim and Michael’s relationship. The pair strikes a very, very delicate balance Michael tests almost immediately, but their conversation makes good on weeks of knowing glances and similar experiences between manager and employee.

But those classifications are irrelevant. The scene became a crucial part of Office lore not because of what it meant to Michael’s management acumen, but what it meant to his ability to be a friend. At a deeper level, that’s the aim he truly cares about.

“The Injury” (season two, episode 12; originally aired 1/12/2006)

In which Michael doesn’t (read: does) want to be treated any differently …

To play off an analogy from “Booze Cruise”: If a building containing all of modern American pop culture was burning down, I’d save the TV sitcom. Sure, I might humor myself into thinking I’d grab soul, funk, and rap (I could get by with strictly European contributions to rock and electronic music) or an armful of movies produced from the height of the studio system’s power to, say, Ghostbusters . But if I’m being completely honest, my heart and soul belong to the situation comedy. And that’s because of episodes like “The Injury,” half-hour stories packed with fine-tuned jokes (and a little warmth) told by characters that beg to be visited on a weekly or nightly basis—no matter how obnoxious some of them may be.

Revisiting and reviewing these first three seasons of The Office is a particular challenge to my critical faculties, because with the possible exception of Arrested Development and Twin Peaks ’ complete runs, there’s no chunk of TV I’ve watched and rewatched more times. These are works I love unconditionally and to which I’ve attached many fond remembrances. I will never not chuckle at Dwight, in the throes of a concussion, saying to Jim “I don’t work in this van!” Depending on the day, I might go as far as to call “The Injury” my favorite episode of any TV show I’ve seen.

So take this with a grain of salt, but I’m also resolute in thinking that “The Injury” is an ideal example of its form. Nothing is wasted, all the jokes land, and it’s premise-driven enough that a drop-in viewer could enjoy it with little to no background information on The Office . With no exposition, it’s easy enough to glean what’s funny about the way Michael and Dwight are behaving: Michael’s speaker-phone cries for help sell the concept that he’s selfish and a little bit starved for attention. There are enough cues from Jim and Pam to get a grasp on Dwight’s day-to-day personality and understand how his bonkers conduct in “The Injury” deviates from that personality. All that’s needed to get Ryan and Michael’s relationship is the way B.J. Novak walks into frame during the cold open and immediately backs out. And who could resist the comic hook of the phrase “I burned my foot, very badly, on my Foreman Grill”?

Yet the more it moves past the premise and digs more into Michael’s petulance and the Bizzaro World where Pam and Dwight are “kinda” friends, the more “The Injury” finds its bearings within the universe of The Office . The reveal that title applies equally to the regional manager and the assistant to the regional manager isn’t the episode’s first bait-and-switch—“The Injury” sets itself up as an old-school, high-concept laffer, then shows its true, character-driven stripes. There are moments where the pacing of the episode is so propulsive, it seems more like a perfect sitcom episode and less like a perfect episode of this particular sitcom. But then the action arrives at something like the gorgeously patient sequence between Ryan, Toby, and Michael in the kitchen—captured by director Bryan Gordon in a single take and a handful of whip pans—and the episode finds its feet firmly planted in familiar, Scrantonian soil.

“The Injury” is an out-of-character moment for The Office , but the show needed such an episode at this point in the second season. It’s a breathlessly paced breather from the kind of material “Booze Cruise” runs on, a digression that breaks from the Jim-Pam romance and puts the brakes on Jim coming to understand Michael. My only real criticism of “The Injury,” and it’s a minor one, involves the jarring inclusion of Jim’s “I’d like to clamp Michael’s face in a Foreman Grill” so soon after those two have their bonding moment on the boat. (He’ll have a much better reason to feel that way next week.) It still retains some ties to ongoing arcs, however, sneakily integrating scenes about Dwight and Angela’s relationship without coming out and saying, “Yes, you haven’t been imagining Dwight and Angela’s relationship.” (Again: Next week.)

Much as “Booze Cruise” belongs to Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson runs away with “The Injury.” The episode is a departure for The Office in general and Wilson specifically, granting him the chance to play a softer, less severe version of his character—one that’s the result of a head injury, sure, but these are still different notes that Wilson plays splendidly. They hint at the fact that there’s something human behind those wire-rim specs, a person who could legitimately befriend Jim and Pam if he didn’t always have his guard up. Concussion Dwight gets the kind of information out of the character that would typically come out in a talking head; it’s great to see the show circumvent a convention it was always in danger of using as a crutch. Wilson’s performance even stays fun and funny after the script requires him to go full-on loopy. If “that’s what she said” wasn’t already established as part of the Office lexicon in “Sexual Harassment,” it certainly was by the time Concussion Dwight steals Michael’s favorite joke—and actually manages to get a laugh with it.

Everything lines up just as it should in “The Injury”: Tremendous performances, a great script packed with quotable lines (“Part of my duties are to”), bold directing choices—just one of these qualities would make for an episode worthy of repeat viewing. The episode initiates a “rising tides lift all boats” scenario, where even a throwaway line like “I found the pudding cups you wanted at a gas station in Carbondale !” has stuck with me through the years. (It’s all in Novak’s reading on that one, his sarcasm masking the fact that Ryan clearly loves having the excuse to get out of the office.) The Office would never deliver another episode this funny, which is not to say it peaked too soon: Being wall-to-wall funny was already becoming less important to the show at this point. That’s not to say humor is the only measure of quality for the ideal sitcom episode, either. “The Injury” gets in its emotional beats, too—hear the tinge of sadness in Jenna Fischer’s voice when Pam says “goodbye” to Concussion Dwight? Fortunately, we never have to say anything similar to “The Injury.” It’s always there, ready to zoom toward your television screen like Dwight’s Trans Am into a telephone pole.

“Booze Cruise”: A-

“The Injury”: A

Stray observations:

  • I imagine “Booze Cruise” was a fairly costly episode—it can’t be cheap to rent a boat of that size for multiple nights of shooting. It was shot in Long Beach Harbor—maybe the city cut them a deal on the location fee?
  • Brenda is played by Brenda Withers, one-time writing partner of Mindy Kaling with whom she collaborated on and starred with in the theatrical satire Matt & Ben . It’s about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck happening upon the Good Will Hunting script (when it falls from the ceiling of their apartment)— here’s an excerpt from the play presented by the old ESPN morning show Cold Pizza . And if you want to spill further down the YouTube rabbit hole, here’s the intro to Mindy And Brenda , a pilot written by Kaling and Withers that failed to square their comedic sensibility with a multi-cam, live-studio-audience format. It wasn’t picked up, and you’ll understand why the minute Noureen DeWulf takes a stab at talking like Mindy Kaling.
  • Ryan and Michael’s “gas station in Carbondale” exchange demonstrates the important role that specificity plays in a gag like that. Mentioning the gas station is in another town makes the trip seem that much more arduous—even if Google Maps lists the longest route between Scranton and Carbondale as being 35 minutes long . Carbondale just sounds far away—like it’s practically in a different century.
  • Favorite tip-off that Dwight’s suffered some sort of traumatic injury to the noggin: I’ve always loved the visual gag of him typing “DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT” over and over (as the name of a folder on his desktop, nonetheless), but there’s a subtlety to calling Pam “Pan” that gets me every time. It helps that Pam’s slow-burning in-scene reaction mirrors the viewer’s: “Pan?”

Overview [ ]

Jim and Pam's relationship caught the attention of the documentary crew from the very first moments, as their constant joking and quick exchanges hinted that they both had deeper feelings for each other.

Recurring jokes [ ]

  • Michael (and other coworkers) have a strange lack of faith in their relationship. Several times Michael accidentally believes they have broken up, Oscar mistakes Jim and Roy, Meredith hates the two being together, and their coworkers believed Angela and Andy were a better couple in Night Out.

Season 1 [ ]

At the beginning of the series, Jim is single while Pam has been engaged to warehouse employee Roy for 3 years and has yet to set a date for the wedding.

Jim and Pam are shown to be great friends and to enjoy each other's company a great deal. It's clear from episode 2 that Jim has feelings for Pam. The relationship in the first season can be seen when Pam falls asleep on Jim's shoulder, and their respective reactions shine light on the situation (" Diversity Day "). Jim's behavior around Pam is one of the first hints of his feelings for her (" Pilot "). Jim and Pam's friendship consists mostly of joking around and playing pranks on Dwight (" The Alliance ") .

Although Pam states that she and Jim are just friends, she seems bothered by the prospect of Jim dating Katy , a purse saleswoman (" Hot Girl ") .

Season 2 [ ]

Throughout the second season, Pam's romantic feelings for Jim become more evident although Pam herself seems to be ignorant or in denial of its existence.

Jim and Pam share their first on-camera kiss in " The Dundies ", when a drunken Pam kisses Jim full on the lips after receiving a Dundie Award. Pam is exceptionally happy since this is the first year that she received a Dundie that wasn't for "Longest Engagement", as Jim had convinced Michael to change it because he knew how much it upset Pam last year and something that Pam's fiancé, Roy, failed to likewise notice.

Although at some points the tension between them increases, Pam's true feelings for Jim become more evident as it is revealed that Pam's fondness for him extends outside the office (" Sexual Harassment ") , and the two are shown to be playful outside work, though Pam chooses to retain a certain distance due to her engagement, evident by the fact that she was angry with Jim when he picked her up causing her shirt to hike up, which was seen by a coworker. Jim, understanding this, chose to apologize and it was forgotten (" The Fight ") . Pam's feelings are also evident in the fact that she seems to be relieved to find out that Jim's relationship with Katy isn't very solid (" Email Surveillance ") .

Jimpam season2

Jim again shows disapproval at the way Pam is treated by her fiancé Roy (" The Client ") and is clearly much more supportive of her dreams (" Boys and Girls ") .

Jim becomes saddened when Roy and Pam decide to finally get married on June 10. This leads to Jim finally being open to Michael  (" Booze Cruise ") about his feelings for Pam and going so far as to schedule a trip to Australia to avoid going to the wedding, which leaves Pam clearly disappointed (" Dwight's Speech ") .

After Michael reveals to the entire office that Jim has feelings for Pam, Jim tries to do some damage control by telling Pam that he used to have a crush on her when they first met, but Pam later finds out that he might not have told her the whole truth (" The Secret ") , which she eventually learns during the casino night benefit hosted by Michael at the warehouse when Jim decides to come clean about his feelings, to which Pam responds by pointing out once again how important their friendship is. Jim, unsatisfied with Pam's response, kisses her (" Casino Night ") .

Season 3 [ ]

After Jim and Pam part from their kiss, Pam decides that she still has to honor her commitment to Roy and tells Jim that she plans to go through with the wedding. Disappointed and heartbroken, Jim accepts a position at the Stamford branch of Dunder Mifflin . Pam eventually decides to call off the wedding and is seen clearly missing Jim's presence in the office, while maintaining that she broke off her engagement for various reasons (" Gay Witch Hunt ") .

Pam shows multiple signs of remorse over her decision to reject Jim and is clearly excited about his return to Scranton after the closing of the Stamford branch. Jim, however, doesn't seem too happy at the prospect, having left to try and get over his feelings for Pam, but eventually decides to transfer back. While Pam is excited about rekindling their friendship, Jim is still unsure of how he feels about her and had started a relationship with Stamford coworker Karen, who also transferred to Scranton to continue her relationship with Jim, which causes Jim and Pam's reunion to be rather disappointing to Pam (" The Merger ") .

Eventually, Jim realizes that Pam is unhappy with the way things are and decides to go back to his old prankster ways by pulling pranks on Dwight and Andy alongside Pam, who also begins to develop a friendship with Karen (" A Benihana Christmas ") . For a while, they both seem happy, having gone back to being friends.

It eventually becomes clear, however, that Jim still has unresolved feelings towards Pam which start to cause problems in his relationship with Karen. In a role reversal, Pam now gives Jim advice on his relationship while mustering romantic feelings for him. Finally being honest to herself about her feelings for Jim, Pam breaks down and cries after realizing she is pushing him into the arms of another woman (" Back From Vacation ") .

Although Jim admits to Karen that he still has feelings for Pam (" The Return ") , their relationship still seems solid and happy. Pam, distraught over this, gets back together with Roy, who had been trying to win her back since their breakup (" Phyllis' Wedding ") , which leaves Jim clearly uncomfortable.

Looking for a fresh start with Roy, Pam decides to tell him about what happened on casino night (" Cocktails ") , which prompts Roy to act violently and eventually attempt to assault Jim in the office (" The Negotiation ") . This event puts a strain on her relationship with Jim and they become ever more distant.

Jimpam s3

Pam eventually grows tired of hiding her feelings from Jim and, on the beach day, confesses to him in front of the entire office staff that he was the true reason she called off her wedding and that she misses his friendship (" Beach Games ") . Later that night, Jim opens up to Pam about how he feels as if he had never really come back from Stamford because of how many unresolved issues they have. Even though they appear to reconcile, Jim's relationship with Karen and the possibility of him being promoted to a position at Corporate still keep them apart.

During his interview with David Wallace in New York, Jim finds a note that Pam had secretly put inside his sales records containing his yogurt-lid medal from " Office Olympics " and realizes that he can no longer fight his feelings for her. He then decides to withdraw his name from consideration for the corporate position, breaks up with Karen, and drives back to Scranton. Meanwhile, Pam seems to accept that she and Jim weren't meant to be and that their timing was never right, but is ecstatic when Jim bursts into the conference room during her talking head and asks her out on a date (" The Job ") .

Season 4 [ ]

Jim and Pam seem both quite happy, but deny the allegations that they are dating. The camera crew then shows them footage of them kissing inside Pam's car after work, after Jim denying that they were dating, then Pam admits to the crew that they had been secretly dating for a couple of months (" Fun Run ") .

Their relationship is eventually outed to the rest of the office after Toby (who had a crush on Pam) sends out a memo on PDA after witnessing Pam kiss Jim on the cheek in the break room (" Dunder Mifflin Infinity ") . The revelation is met with joy by most of their coworkers.

Jimpam s4

As a result of their new relationship, Jim and Pam are both more relaxed and incredibly happy all throughout the season, even taking pity on Dwight when his secret relationship with Angela comes to a sudden end and she begins to show an interest in Andy (" Money ") . Jim is particularly sympathetic to Dwight's situation due to his own history with Pam. The realization that they were finally able to overcome all the obstacles and be honest with themselves about their feelings for each other only serves to strengthen their relationship even further and they are shown to be the happiest and most stable couple in the office (" Dinner Party ") .

When Pam's attempt to set Michael up with her landlady goes awry, Jim jokes that she's going to have to move out and suggests that they move in together, though she dismisses the idea saying that she wouldn't move in with a man without being engaged first. After a quick exchange in which Jim says that a proposal is on the way, he reveals to the documentary crew the engagement ring he had purchased one week into dating Pam and states that he was not kidding about wanting to marry her (" Chair Model ") .

Over the next few days, Jim teases Pam by phrasing ordinary requests in ways that cause her to mistake them for proposals (" Did I Stutter? ") but, after giving Michael advice on how to get to Holly and realizing that he and Pam had come such a long way since they first met, as well as the importance of their workplace in their relationship, he decides to propose during Toby's going away party. Jim pays Phyllis to get fireworks for the party as a way of emulating the "first date" he and Pam had back in " The Client ". During the fireworks display, Jim goes as far as getting the ring out of his pocket before Andy proposed to Angela in a very public fashion. Having felt that the moment was no longer appropriate, Jim doesn't propose, leaving Pam (who already suspected that Jim would propose that night) visibly disappointed (" Goodbye, Toby ") .

Season 5 [ ]

In a talking head, Jim reveals that after Toby's party he and Pam talked and decided they would rather not get engaged yet since Pam would be spending the summer in New York studying graphic design at the Pratt Institute and they both didn't want to spend the first few months of their engagement apart.

Jim, however, misses Pam terribly when she's in New York and, unable to wait any longer, convinces her to meet him for lunch at a gas station halfway between Scranton and New York and proposes to her as soon as they meet. Pam promptly accepts (" Weight Loss ") .

Pam's time in New York, albeit difficult for both of them, serves to once again show the strength of their relationship, as they are shown to be in sync with each other even when they're having an off day (" Baby Shower ") and also to support and trust each other (" Crime Aid ") . Pam's love for Jim eventually proves to be greater than her dreams of being an artist when she decides to return to Scranton instead of spending another 3 months in New York to retake a class she had failed (" Business Trip ") .

Jim and Pam eventually move in together after Jim buys his parent's house. Even though he does so without telling Pam and, at first, she seems disappointed at the surprise, she is ecstatic at the fact that they now have a home (" Frame Toby ") .

When Pam's parents' marriage starts to fail, Pam's father William comes to stay with them, putting a strain on their relationship that might have gone as far as to end it completely. Pam is saddened by the fact that her father won't talk to her about his failing marriage but thinks he might open up to Jim. After they talk, William decides to divorce Helene , and Pam gets worried thinking about what Jim could possibly have said and if one day he might say the same thing to her. Later, however, it's revealed that Jim simply told William how much he loved Pam and how he never doubted that they were perfect for each other, and William realized he had never felt that way about Helene. Pam, touched to learn that Jim had loved her so deeply for so long, tells the documentary crew that they are soulmates (" Stress Relief ") .

Once again showing how supportive they are of each other, Jim supports Pam's decision of leaving Dunder Mifflin to start the Michael Scott Paper Company with Michael and Ryan . When she returns as a saleswoman, both are extremely happy at the prospect of being desk mates (" Casual Friday ") .

Having realized that a wedding is too stressful and expensive, Jim and Pam decide to go to Ohio and elope. On their way out of the office, however, they decide to stop by the former offices of Michael Scott Paper Company to join their co-workers at Café Disco. While dancing and having fun with everybody they realize that, even though their wedding day is a celebration of their love for each other, they both want to share that moment with friends and family (" Café Disco ") .

Pam and Jim find out about the pregnancy. ( Company Picnic )

During a volleyball game against Corporate during the company picnic, Pam twists her ankle and Jim takes her to a nearby hospital. There, after Jim gives Dwight an update on Pam's injury, he's called back into the exam room. Although there is no audio, their expressions and Jim's subsequent call to Dwight strongly suggest that the doctor revealed that Pam was pregnant (" Company Picnic ") .

Season 6 [ ]

It is confirmed that Pam is 4 months pregnant, although they have yet to tell their co-workers. The secret is revealed accidentally, however, when Michael starts spreading rumors about his employees. Jim and Pam eventually tell the office of their pregnancy to spare Stanley from having his extramarital affair revealed (" Gossip ") .

Pam and Jim decide to get married in Niagara Falls in order to save money, thinking that people in the office wouldn't be enthusiastic to drive all the way up there, but their plan backfires when Michael decides to give everyone two days off if they go to the wedding (" The Meeting ") .

In Niagara Falls, during the rehearsal dinner, Jim gives a touching speech about how, even though he had to wait so long for Pam, he always knew it would be worth it. The moment, however, goes south when he accidentally reveals that Pam is pregnant, much to the disgust of her old-fashioned grandmother.

Jim and Pam get married. ( Niagara )

On their wedding day, Pam is upset because her pregnancy had prevented her from wearing the outfit she had chosen and because her mother couldn't stop talking about her failed marriage, and nearly reaches a breaking point when her veil gets caught in a doorway and rips. She calls Jim who cuts his tie in half in solidarity so they match with ruined clothes but they decide that, even though they want to share that day with everyone else, they also need it to be about themselves. They run away and board The Maid of the Mist , where they ask the captain to marry them. They return to the church for the formal wedding, only to see Michael, Dwight and Jim's brothers hijack the ceremony and recreate the JK Wedding Dance video. They still enjoy it, however, having already had their own private moment on the boat. After the ceremony, Jim reveals that he bought the boat tickets as an alternate plan the day he saw the video, but that the church itself was an alternate plan since what he really wanted was to have married Pam " a long, long time ago. Pretty much the day [he] met her " (" Niagara ") .

Over the course of the season, Pam's pregnancy advances and, after a moment of panic in which she admits to being scared of childbirth, she gives birth to their first child, Cecelia Halpert (" The Delivery ") .

Season 7 [ ]

During the course of season 7, Jim and Pam are shown to be extremely happy having their own family and their relationship grows and strengthens even further than ever. In “PDA”, it is heavily implied that they had intercourse in the office.

Season 8 [ ]

Actress Jenna Fischer 's real-life pregnancy made the writers introduce Pam's second pregnancy. When Sabre CEO Robert California places Jim and Pam on opposite sides of a list in which he names the people he thinks are winners and losers, Jim once again comforts her by deliberately allowing her to find a list he made himself where he elects Pam, Cece, and their new baby as winners, and everyone else as unimportant (" The List ") .

About halfway through the season, Pam gives birth to Phillip Halpert .

Season 9 [ ]

As the shooting of the documentary comes to a close, Pam seems happy with her life in Scranton with Jim, Cece, and Philip. Jim, however, seems unhappy at the prospect of a calm and uneventful life.

Before the season began, Jim's old college friend started a sports marketing business in Philadelphia based on a concept Jim had while they were in college, Athlead . While Jim and Pam had originally decided that it would be impractical for Jim to take part in the business, Jim eventually decides to do so anyway without telling Pam (" New Guys ") .

When Jim finally comes clean to Pam about his decision, she supports him but is concerned that he kept it a secret from her (" Andy's Ancestry ") and gets angry at him after finding that he invested a large sum of their money even though the company didn't need any further cash influxes at the time (" Here Comes Treble (episode) ") .

As Jim gets more invested in Athlead, he starts working part-time at Dunder Mifflin so he can spend part of the week in Philadelphia (" Dwight Christmas ") . This puts further strain on their marriage, as evidenced by their lack of comfort around each other and brief conversations. The strain reaches an all-time high when one of Athlead's major investors decided to back down, leading Jim to misdirect his anger at Pam during a phone call. Pam breaks down in tears and is consoled by Brian , the boom mic operator from the documentary crew (" Customer Loyalty ") .

Upon hearing of what happened after their discussion (" Couples Discount ") , Jim is worried because he realizes this is the same pattern that led Pam away from Roy and into his arms, and they decide to make an effort to communicate more by going to couples counseling (" Stairmageddon ") .

Jimpam s9

After a few sessions, Jim tells Pam that he is really glad that they're trying to fix their problems as he leaves the office to go to Philadelphia once again. Pam goes after him because he forgot his umbrella. As Pam walks away, Jim chases after her and hugs her. While at first reluctant because of the emotional barrier that had been placed between them, Pam eventually hugs him back and they realize that their marriage and their family are the most important things after all (" Paper Airplane ") .

Jim quits Athlead and goes back to Dunder Mifflin full-time to be with Pam, which puts their relationship back on track (" Livin' the Dream ") . However, she overhears a conversation between Jim and Darryl in which Darryl tells Jim that Athlead had a buyer who was offering them a large sum of money to pitch the company throughout the country for 3 months. Pam starts to worry that Jim might eventually resent her for forcing him to quit his dream job and that she might not be enough for him. After Pam voices her concerns to Jim, he enlists the documentary crew to show her just how important she is to him. The crew puts together a montage of various moments of their relationship that were caught on tape, including the kiss at Chili's in " The Dundies ", Jim's confession and their subsequent kiss in " Casino Night ", Jim's proposal, their private wedding aboard the Maid of the Mist and ending with Pam opening the teapot from " Christmas Party " and Jim retrieving the note that he intended to give her with the teapot. After Pam finishes watching the video, Jim finally gives her the note. She reads it and understands once and for all how important she is to him (" A.A.R.M. ") .

Still feeling like she has to repay Jim for leaving Athlead (now Ath leap ) for her, Pam secretly puts their house on the market so that Jim can take back his job at Athlead, with the headquarters now in Austin, Texas. Jim is ecstatic to hear that she is truly on board now (" Finale ") .

The Office is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, with lovable characters and an entertaining mockumentary storyline. The show aired through the prime of early 2000s TV, spanning nine seasons and cementing itself in the hearts of many. Over a decade after the show ended, fans keep going back to rewatch, and one of those reasons is the iconic relationship at the forefront: Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly.

Throughout the show's early seasons, Jim and Pam epitomized a will-they-won't-they dynamic. Given The Office 's workplace setting, romance isn't exactly what one would expect, but Jim and Pam share intense chemistry from the first episode. With ups and downs, flirting, and heartbreak, Jim and Pam were part of the show's heart. Their long-winded romance took a while to build. But luckily, in a world of streaming, there's no need for fans to wait to see their happily ever after.

Updated on March 26th, 2024 by Fawzia Khan: Jim and Pam are one of the most iconic sitcom couples of all time. Their love story was organic and raw, which made them so relatable to audiences. Their will-they-won't-they dynamic seemed sweet and shy, as opposed to drawn out unnecessarily. Similarly, their romantic arc hit realistic bumps along the way, even when they got married. This list has been updated with new formatting and further information about Jim and Pam's relationship timeline.

1 Season 1: Jim and Pam Are Best Friends in The Office

Season 1 of The Office didn't last very long, with only six episodes proving that the show's creators were trying something new. Throughout the six episodes, audiences learn who Jim, Pam, Michael, Dwight, and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton team are and that Jim Halpert has a massive crush on Pam. She doesn't reciprocate those feelings, though, as she's engaged to her high school sweetheart, Roy Anderson, a warehouse worker. As such, their relationship stays within the confines of a friendship, and they share plenty of platonic fun.

The Office 's debut season only had a few episodes, and there weren't many noteworthy ones for Jim and Pam's relationship. Still, the second episode, "Diversity Day," gave Jim and the audience a little hope. In it, Michael is racist all day, and Jim loses out on a sale, but Pam falling asleep on his shoulder makes it a good day for him. The season ends with "Hot Girl" and Jim possibly moving on, asking out Katy, played by Amy Adams.

2 Season 2: Jim's Crush on Pam Intensifies Into Love

10 most questionable storylines in the office.

The Office's most controversial plotlines weren't necessarily bad but unusual. They certainly raised eyebrows.

Season 2 is when things started picking up for The Office in terms of quality, and there are significantly more episodes, at a whopping twenty-two. With that said, though, Jim and Pam were still only friends. The season showcased more of their friendship through various pranks they pulled on Dwight. But Pam was still engaged to Roy, and Jim was dating Katy casually, though it was clear Jim's crush was growing.

Season 2 starts strong with The Dundies, a Dunder Mifflin Scranton-exclusive award show set at Chili's or similar Scranton establishments every year. In the episode, Pam, amid an argument with Roy, attends the Dundies, gets inebriated, and even kisses Jim quickly, marking their first kiss. A few episodes later in "The Client," they share a rooftop dinner, later considered by Jim as their first date. In "Christmas Party," Jim gets Pam in Secret Santa, where he gives her several well-thought-out presents, including a note professing his feelings for her that he takes out of the gift before she reads it. The season ends with "Casino Night," where Jim confesses his love and kisses Pam by his desk, leaving the season on a romantic cliffhanger.

3 Season 3: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder For Jim and Pam

When Season 3 picks back up, there's a flashback to the Jim and Pam kiss and the resulting conversation. It's short and bittersweet, resulting in Jim's transfer from Scranton after Pam's rejection. It's a heartbreaking turn of events, and while Pam calls off her engagement, Jim and his Stamford coworker Karen start a relationship that follows him back to Scranton. For a while, Pam is left pining after Jim, even when she gives Roy a second chance.

After Jim transfers to the Stamford branch, he and Pam don't have contact until the fifth episode, "Initiation," where Jim accidentally calls Scranton while Pam is still at work. Their dynamic doesn't return until Jim returns in "The Merger," where things are slightly awkward. "Beach Day" shows a more confident Pam admitting that she misses how things were with Jim before he transferred. The next episode seemingly puts the drama on hold and the romance on a pedestal as Jim asks Pam on a date.

4 Season 4: Jim and Pam Finally Get Together

It's unsurprising that after the Season 3 cliffhanger, everything pointed to Jim and Pam as a couple, but they were both adamant that they're just friends. That rouse quickly falls apart when the cameras catch them kissing after work. Their dynamic doesn't change too much, but fans finally get to see both parties happily in love.

There are a few notable episodes of their relationship, starting with "Money," where they spend their first night away together at Schrute Farms. Episode 13 of the season features the infamous "Dinner Party," where the couple join Andy, Angela, Dwight, and his old babysitter for a disastrous dinner party at Michael and Jan's condo. It's clear that their relationship is new but on a fast track toward commitment as "Goodbye Toby" features Jim as he plans to propose. Unfortunately, things don't turn out that way as Andy throws a wrench in Jim's grand gesture, getting engaged instead.

5 Season 5: Jim Proposes to Pam, and They Get Some Good News

10 funniest characters from the office, ranked.

The Office is known for its endless laughs and iconic jokes. But whether it's Michael or Pam, someone has to be the funniest of them all.

The failed proposal gets addressed early in Season 5 after Pam reveals she's heading to New York for a twelve-week art program at the prestigious Pratt Institute. So, to avoid another long engagement, they wait until she's back. But that also doesn't last long. Throughout the season, their relationship gets tested with another long-distance stint, a workplace shift, and an unexpected milestone.

The first two episodes of The Office 's Season 5 split with "Weight Loss," where Pam heads off for three months to NYC. The episode features the infamous scene where the duo meets at a rest stop/gas station, and he proposes in the pouring rain. "Frame Toby" features Jim buying his parents' house, and he and Pam move in together. But she, having failed art school, spends a good chunk of the season questioning her future career, even quitting Dunder Mifflin with Michael Scott to found the Michael Scott Paper Company. The season ends with a hospital visit and a happy moment.

6 Season 6: Jim and Pam Halpert Get Married and Have a Baby

Season 6 of The Office solidifies Jim and Pam's relationship in The Office by finally giving them two massive milestones. The Office shifts its focus onto more notable Dunder Mifflin issues like financial problems and management issues, allowing Jim and Pam to exist peacefully in the workplace with a stable relationship. The season overall opens the door for their relationship to last, so there isn't room for will-they-wont-they drama.

While it was clear that Pam and Jim got news of her pregnancy at the end of Season 5, it got announced in "Gossip." Jim also gets a promotion in the early part of the season, right before Jim and Pam get married in Niagra Falls. Episodes seventeen and eighteen, "The Delivery," are split in two, with the first featuring Jim as a nervous wreck and the second part introducing little Cecelia Marie Halpert or CeCe.

7 Season 7: Jim and Pam Fall More in Love With the Birth of Cece

Believe it or not, nothing especially significant happens in The Office Season 7 that revolves around Jim and Pam. The only notable part of the season is Steve Carell's Michael Scott leavin g Dunder Mifflin for good . With that said, though, there are a few memorable moments between the couple within the season.

Episode 3, "Andy's Play," centers around Andy in a production of Sweeney Todd and his trying to impress Erin. But, Jim and Pam struggle to find childcare to attend the play. The episode ends with them finally getting CeCe to sleep and having a sweet little date night in the car. "Costume Contest" features Pam slightly upset about a past fling's return. To cheer her up, Jim breaks his no serious Halloween costume rule, showing up in a Popeye outfit with baby CeCe. Michael says goodbye in the twenty-second episode, which is emotional for everyone on-screen and off.

8 Season 8: The Halpert Family Grows, and Cathy Rocks the Boat

John krasinski nearly quit acting before his big break.

John Krasinski's best known for playing Jim Halpert in The Office. However, he was very close to quitting acting, just before his career-defining job.

Season 8 of The Office starts strong, with "The List" showing Pam pregnant with "little Michael Scott," their second baby. But, things start to get rocky a few episodes in with "Pam's Replacement." In it, Pam prepares for maternity leave, and her temporary replacement, Cathy, rubs her the wrong way as she bonds with Jim, though he remains completely faithful.

After that, Pam is absent for a few episodes until "Jury Duty," when it's revealed in an all-too-realistic scenario that the Halperts are struggling with raising two kids. In the next episode, Pam returns from maternity leave, only to have Jim sent on an assignment in Tallahassee, Florida. There, Pam's anxieties about Cathy get confirmed, as the woman tries to get between their marriage. Luckily, the Jim cheating on Pam storyline got axed by John Krasinski , and their marriage remains stable for a while.

9 Season 9: Jim and Pam Get Rocky With Real Marital Problems, and Brian Enters the Scene

Season 9of The Office was notably different from its predecessors as it started with Jim and Pam acknowledging the documentary crew. It was clear from the first episode that Season 9 was the beginning of the end, and things got real. The second episode, "Roy's Wedding," gave Jim and Pam a glimpse into the past and a mirror to reflect on their relationship, leaving them searching for any secrets or unknowns about their marriage.

Pam finds out Jim's big secret --he started a company-- in "Andy's Ancestry" and is happy for him but upset that he hid it. "Here Comes Treble" has a similar feeling, as Pam finds out just how much of their money Jim invested without telling her. Their relationship hits the rockiest point yet, as Jim starts splitting his time between his family and his new job. They're seen fighting for the first time in The Office and are seemingly on a path to disaster until "A.A.R.M." In that episode, she reveals that she's afraid she's not enough for him, and Jim compiles a montage of them over the years before finally giving her the infamous teapot letter and sealing their fate as soulmates . The final episode of the show shows them moving to Austin, Texas, to pursue Jim's dream job, and they presumably live happily ever after.

‘The Office’: Ranking All Seasons From Worst to Best

'The Office' Seasons ranked

  • Famous Amos Cookies Founder Wally Amos Dies at 88
  • ‘Abbott Elementary’: 9 Crossovers We’d Like to See in Season 4

The Office may have gone off the air nearly 10 years ago, but the NBC comedy following a rag-tag team of employees at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin remains a pop culture mainstay.

Whether you were tuning in for Michael Scott’s ( Steve Carell ) awkward moments or the romance between Jim ( John Krasinski ) and Pam ( Jenna Fischer ), there was something for every kind of viewer through the show’s run from 2005 to 2013. And while the majority of fans can agree on noteworthy episodes, their opinions may differ when it comes to comparing seasons.

For this reason, we’re ranking all nine seasons of the stellar comedy from worst to best, offering a definitive answer to the age-old question: what’s the best season of The Office ? While this may be our ranking, below, we want to hear your thoughts. Share what season of The Office is your favorite in the comments section, and catch the comedy on Peacock anytime.

The Office , Streaming now, Peacock

Ed Helms and James Spader in 'The Office'

9. Season 8

The Office is rarely not funny, but Season 8 had a lot to figure out in the absence of Michael Scott, who bid the series adieu partway through Season 7. It felt like the show was discovering its new rhythm and, through that process, delivered some laughs but not nearly as many as in previous seasons. A definite highlight was James Spader ‘s performance as the new acting manager of the Scranton branch, Robert California.

John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, and Steve Carell in 'The Office'

8. Season 1

Our love for the first season of The Office is undoubtedly ever-present — why else would we be fans of the show in the first place? Looking back though, the short six-episode season doesn’t have the same magic that later seasons do. Anyone with a deeper knowledge of the show’s history understands that the American adaptation is based on the 2001 British series of the same name from co-creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant . And in looking at the premiere episode of NBC’s iteration, it’s essentially an identical copy of the original show’s pilot. Michael Scott was also wildly offensive without the kind of lovable idiot qualities fans came to enjoy as the series progressed, ranking Season 1 on the lower side of this list.

Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, and Rainn Wilson in the 'Dwight Christmas' episode of 'The Office'

7. Season 9

The other season without Michael Scott, this chapter featured some definite highlights such as Dwight’s ( Rainn Wilson ) introduction of Belsnickel in the holiday installment that left us wanting to ask relatives and friends if they’ve been “impish” or “admirable.” Then there’s the finale, which reunited the Dunder Mifflin crew with their former manager at Dwight and Angela’s ( Angela Kinsey ) farm wedding. However we feel about the rest of this season’s episodes, these highlights are enough to rank it above some of its predecessors.

Steve Carell in 'The Office'

6. Season 7

This solid season delivers some notable installments including the fan-favorite “Threat Level Midnight,” in which Michael shows off his homemade movie starring his colleagues through various years of their employment at Dunder Mifflin. Notably marking the beginning of the boss’s absence from the series, who could forget Pam’s final farewell to Michael at the airport in “Goodbye, Michael”? Those are just two memorable entries from a season filled with them.

The cast of 'The Office' - Creed Bratton, Ed Helms, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, Rainn Wilson, Phyllis Smith, Oscar Nunez, Mindy Kaling, Kate Flannery, John Krasinski, Steve Carell, Amy Ryan, Angela Kinsey - 'Weight Loss' - Season 5

5. Season 5

Season 5 has a strong lineup of episodes ranging from the season opener “Weight Loss,” in which Michael encourages the team to get active and lose weight as part of a company initiative, to the always hilarious “Stress Relief,” in which Dwight memorably stages a fire in the Dunder Mifflin offices, accidentally causing Stanley (Leslie David Baker) to have a heart attack. Angela’s plea to “save Bandit” still rattles in our brains. And while Jim and Dwight’s pranks were often great cold opens, “Casual Friday” served up Kevin’s (Brian Baumgartner) famous chili spill  — much to our amusement and poor Kevin’s misfortune.

Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski as Pam and Jim getting married in 'The Office'

4. Season 6

Falling in the middle of all seasons is the one that includes not one, but two two-part episodes centering around the show’s it-couple, Jim and Pam. At the point when “Niagra: Part 1” and “Niagra: Part 2” aired, The Office was reaching peak popularity during its run; it was event comedy television at its finest. Never was a TV wedding more spirited than Jim and Pam’s, featuring their colleagues recreating the viral “Forever” aisle dance . And if a wedding isn’t enough to excite, “The Delivery: Part 1” and “The Delivery: Part 2” are the perfect companion as the couple welcomes their first child. Apart from the duo, Season 6 also delivered memorable installments like “Koi Pond” and “Scott’s Tots.” Need we say more?

Leslie David Baker and Rainn Wilson in the 'Beach Games' episode of 'The Office'

3. Season 3

Undoubtedly a fun outing, Season 3 gifted viewers with episodes such as “Gay Witch Hunt,” “The Merger,” “The Convict” with Prison Mike, and “Ben Franklin.” Among the highlights though are “Back From Vacation,” in which Michael essentially reveals to the entire staff that he went on vacation with then-superior, Jan ( Melora Hardin ). And who could forget “Beach Games,” where Pam puts her fears aside and walks across hot coals? It’s certainly one of the show’s most uplifting moments.

Steve Carell in 'The Office' - 'The Dinner Party' - Season 4, Episode 13

2. Season 4

From the “Fun Run” to “Goodbye, Toby,” Season 4 is chock full of seriously funny episodes including “Survivor Man,” when Michael tries to survive in the wild but has to be saved by Dwight, who is infinitely more experienced in the wilderness. Then there’s the crème de la crème , the pièce de résistance, “Dinner Party,” in which Michael hosts several of his colleagues for dinner alongside then-girlfriend Jan. What ensues is a night filled with awkward music moments , bickering, small flat-screen TVs, and an endlessly-cooking main course holding everyone hostage. This season also serves as the introduction to Amy Ryan ‘s Holly, who dazzles Michael when she replaces HR head Toby (Paul Lieberstein).

Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski in 'The Office'

1. Season 2

While the series overall is filled with great seasons, it’s the second chapter of  The Office that takes the metaphorical cake. Just like Pam felt in Chili’s during this season’s “The Dundies” episode, we feel God when we tune into this chapter’s installments. Whether it’s Michael Scott’s mishap with a George Foreman Grill in “The Injury,” “Booze Cruise,” or the memorable “Casino Night,” which features Jim and Pam’s first  real kiss , we can’t help but look back fondly on this strong sophomore outing. And nothing beats Michael trying to take over Toby’s job in “Conflict Resolution.”

Thinking of going to Moscow?

We thought about it and did it September 21, 2013. We would like to share how we did it and explore options on how to visit this great city.

Because we were staying in St. Petersburg, we chose a "Day Trip".

We found a guide on the internet and contacted her. We asked her the best way and day to visit Moscow. We agreed Saturday would be good and the Sapsan train is the preferred way to travel. We booked our e-tickets for the train on the internet.

The day began early with an accuweather check. It showed brilliant sun all day - in St. Petersburg (1 of only 35 days a year) and rain all day in Moscow. Walking to the Metro station we began the long ride down to the underground train.

The early morning Metro

This is the Moscow train station in St. Petersburg

And here is the Sapsan at rest

After scanning our tickets and a walk through a metal detector ( which we set off) we walked to wagon #3. Showing our passports to the attendant , we were seated by 0630 and ready to ride !

After we were seated we received this overhead greeting

Russian Railways welcomes you aboard ! We soon found out that every thing would be in Russian first and then in English. Our launch time was reached - and we were off.

Here is some information about the Sapsan

http://www.russiantrains.com/en/page/sapsan-train

As the sun began to rise we saw some fog , but a clear sky just outside of St. Petersburg @ 125 mph.

We settled in for the 4 hour train ride to Moscow.

Appreciate your posting of these visuals in connection with your rail trip to Moscow and back. As noted below, we did this "adventure" in 2008 via the air routes. Keep sharing your nice and interesting visuals. Below are a few of mine showing the "prizes" to be enjoyed in Moscow. Fortunately, we had three days on our cruise stop in St. Petersburg, making this one-day trip work better.

The high-speed train connection does make a big, big difference currently. We did the one-day Moscow trip in 2008 by the air connections. I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship early (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); get back to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. Moscow is a super large city of over ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour, but the train takes your directly into the heart of this large city. Since we had to drive in from the airport, we had a good feel as we traveled into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, big box stores, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoi Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin-era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. They have done this tour many times and have its details down well and timing perfected. Let us know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow. This square separates the Kremlin, as the former royal citadel and the current official residence for Russia's President, from a historic merchant quarter. Red Square is often considered the central square of Moscow and all of Russia, because Moscow's major streets originate from here. The name Red Square comes neither from the color of the bricks nor from the link between the color red and communism. The name came about because of a Russian word that can mean either "red" or "beautiful". This word, per Wikipedia, has the meaning "beautiful", was originally applied to Saint Basil's Cathedral. Then, later, the meaning was transferred to the nearby square. It is believed that the square acquired its current name in the 17th century. Red Square was the leading stage and trade center for Moscow. Ivan the Great decreed that trade should only be conducted from person to person, but later these rules were relaxed and permanent market buildings began appearing on the square. After a fire in 1547, Ivan the Terrible reorganized the lines of wooden shops on the Eastern side into market lines and part of that transitioned into what is now GUM department store that adjoins this famed square.:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

The domes of the historic church inside the walls of the Kremlin:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB (Secret Police) Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels inside the famed State Armoury in Moscow. One of the oldest museums in Moscow, it was established in 1808 and located within the Kremlin Walls. It originated as the royal arsenal in 1508 during when it was in charge of producing, purchasing and storing weapons, jewelry and various household articles of the Tsars. There are ten Fabergé eggs in the Armoury collection (all Imperial eggs). This is the most Imperial eggs, and the second-most overall Fabergé eggs, owned by a single owner. The Trans-Siberian Railway Egg is a jeweled Easter egg made under the supervision of the Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé in 1900 for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. It was presented by Nicolas II as an Easter gift to his wife. The exterior of the 1900 Trans-Siberian Railway egg is made of onyx, silver, gold, and quartz, and is decorated with colored vitreous enamel. The lid of the egg is hinged, has an overlay of green enamel, and is decorated with inlaid leaves of acanthus. On top of the lid is a golden three-headed eagle in gold with the Imperial Crown. The interior is lined with velvet. A route map of the Trans-Siberian Railway is engraved in silver across the face, with major stations marked by a precious stone, forming a belt around the egg. The egg is supported by three griffins made of gold-plated silver on a stepped triangular base of white onyx.:

Scuba and Terry, thanks for sharing the information and beautiful pictures.

One question... I assume the one day tour is similar to the St Petersburg tours, in that you don't need to obtain a Russian Visa if you are booked through a Russian tour agency?

Appreciate the nice comments and good question from our friend in Las Vegas. YES , if your cruise is there three days or less . . . A ND . . . you are with a licensed travel/tour firm , then there is no need to do a Russian Visa. You cannot take that one- or two-day train to Moscow and back unless you either have a visa or are with an appropriate such firm traveling with you.

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Celebrity Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik . Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. The announcements on the train requested turning off phones. We quietly greeted and introduced ourselves (In Russian) to our table mates . It seems that we were the token foreign passengers and we quickly realized that on the train (Like most public transport), people don't usually speak unless they have a question or know one another. Even when they do it's respectful of others privacy with no loud talking or phone calls." I could get used to this" I thought to myself. Reading was the norm and listening to music was socially acceptable. Out came the Eyewitness Travel Moscow and cued Al Stewart's Road to Moscow on the mp3. After a quick nap and a snack we noticed that the movie Moscow does not believe in tears was playing on the TV and people were seemed surprised that we knew the movie.

The next thing we knew, the train was arriving in Moscow !

Exiting the train , we headed for the station.

Irina was waiting for us at the end of the platform and it was starting to rain. " Welcome to Moscow and it's weather" she said. " Nine months of expectations and three months of disappointment" she remarked. We headed to the Metro for a tour.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro

As you can see , at 11 in the morning and we still had an empty Metro. Saturday or Sunday is the way to tour Moscow with a minimum of crowds

The first station that we visited was Komsomolskaya which is named for the Communist Youth League

Here is a mosaic from the ceiling

And at the end of the station was comrade Lenin

The Kievskaya Station is dedicated to the friendship between Russia and the Ukraine and is named after it's Capital - Kiev

It features idealized mosaics in the Soviet realism style

The Ukraine was the bread basket of the Soviet Union so agriculture and handicraft is displayed prominently in it's mosaics.

Because it is on the ring line #5 , it connects with #3 and #4 line and can get very busy.

Thank you for these wonderful reviews. We are going to St. Petersburg for two days on the Brilliance next May. We have decided we want to go to Moscow for one of the days....your great photos make me want to go even more now! :D

The train ride of 8 hours (4 hours one way) and only 8 hours in Moscow doesn't sound perfect. Should we look for a tour guide who will take us by plane? Any recommendations? We would not want to undertake this on our own.

Congratulations on your upcoming TA and Baltic cruise and thank you for your kind comments. We did a TA in April of 2009 , followed by a 10 day stay in St. Petersburg. It's really a great time for the weather. Going to Moscow from St. Petersburg on a 2 day stay is going to be an either/ or proposition. Unless you can do a post cruise stay , it will be either Moscow or St. Petersburg . If its your first visit to Russia , we would recommend that you stay in St. Petersburg. It will save you travel time and money and there is more than enough to do in 2 days. If you decide on Moscow , many of the cruise ship offer this trip. We don't normally use or recommend the ship's tours but Moscow would be an exception. Few if any private tours offer this option for 2 days. If you chose to DIY with a Visa you could fly and meet the guide in Moscow and stay overnight. The problem with a 2 day stay is that Sapsan leaves before your ship arrives in port on the first day and arrives after your ship leaves on the second day. A more radical plan that we considered was to jump ship (With the Captain's permission) with a Russian Visa and stay longer in St. Petersburg / Moscow. Because we wanted more time in Russia , we cancelled our post TA Baltic cruise and just stayed in St. Petersburg.

Our last Metro stop before entering Red Square was Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Square of the Revolution). The hall contains life size sculptures of 'everyday people' who made The Revolution and the Metro possible.

Rubbing the nose of this border guards dog is said to bring good luck. I was amazed to see how many people touched this dogs nose after we stepped away.

This last 'every day person' is Lyudmila Pavlichenko who was credited with 309 kills as a sniper during WWII.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko

Upon leaving the Metro station we were greeted by a steady rain and it was time to pop the umbrellas. After entering through The Resurrection Gate we stopped to take a picture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Gate_and_Chapel

And turning around , there is was - Red Square ! I felt like like Dorothy opening the door in OZ. All of my childhood fears of ICBM rockets , goose stepping troops , 1 PM air raid sirens on Saturday , bomb shelters and duck and cover drills at school flooded my memory! Focusing on the task at hand , I had to learn to shoot pictures with one hand while holding an umbrella with the other. The first picture is Marshal Zhukov , a war hero

mounted on a horse , in front of The Historical Museum.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgy_Zhukov

Kazan Cathedral was consecrated in 1636 by Prince Pozharsky and stood for 300 years until Joseph Stalin destroyed it in 1936. This faithful reconstruction was completed and consecrated in 1993.

There was a sea of umbrellas watching the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I could only get a picture by holding the camera overhead. If you look carefully, you can see his rifle beneath his raincoat.

The crowd thinned as they quickly marched away

But I sprinted ahead to capture a video clip

It was raining harder so we headed for GUM in hopes that the rain would abate.

GUM (pronounced goom) was the name given to this building after the Revolution in 1921. It was built in 1893 and currently has over 1000 shops. A banner proclaims 120 years.

This was one of my favorite photos of our trip. Watching a game of Bridal tug of war.

Maybe they were here shopping for this Mother In Law Cake. It features poisonous mushrooms on top ( I think they are sugar but didn't try them ).

We moved on to Yeliseev's Gastronom. The original store is in St. Petersburg.

http://russiapedia.rt.com/prominent-russians/business/grigory-yeliseev/

This is their souvenir shop

With no sign of the rain stopping it was time to pop the umbrellas and head out to Red Square. The square is about 500 yards long.

The small platform in front of St. Basil's is called The Lobnoe Mesto. It is where the Tsar and patriarch would address the people at various times.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobnoye_Mesto

Even in the rain and overcast skies the cathedral is striking !

To the right of the photo is The Savior's Tower. It was the main entrance to the Kremlin and stands 230 feet tall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasskaya_Tower

We thought we would go inside of St. Basils to dodge rain and see what the interior looked like. Here's the porch.

Fancy doors

Iconostasis

And here is a view of Red Square with everything labeled

Wow! What else can be said. The photos and your trip are amazing! We have booked a Baltic cruise for June, 2014. We had not considered going to Moscow and after reading your blog, we are still not. BUT if we ever are lucky enough to come back sometime, it will definitely be on our TO DO list! Thank you for sharing the pics, vids and memories!

Hi Jim and Pam, how was the Fall in Michigan this year ? DW is a Michigander and we met in Michigan. We love spending the fall there. Congratulations on your Baltic cruise. We fell in love with St. Petersburg when we visited there on our 2006 cruise. You will have 2 full and enjoyable days there. Is it possible to do a post cruise stay in Moscow or St. Pete. ? We wished that we did when we first went because there a lot that we missed and wanted to see things at our own pace. It would be much quicker and cheaper to fly from Copenhagen than another transatlantic flight from Michigan. If you have not seen our thread on St. Petersburg - you may want to check it out.

In front of St. Basil's Cathedral is a statue of a butcher Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitniy Pozharskiy. When Moscow was occupied in 1612 by the Polish Army , they raised a volunteer group to repel the invaders.

To me, the most amazing church in Moscow is The Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 , the strategy of retreat and destroy (scorched earth) was employed by Russia to allow Napoleon to enter Moscow. He found it in ruins - burned by the residents. When winter arrived on October 19, Napoleon began the long retreat to France. Along the way with no food , the winter and the Russian people attacking , the French troops were decimated. 600,000 troops had entered Russia and less than 60,000 left alive. To celebrate the victory Tsar Alexander ordered the Cathedral built to thank Christ for the victory.

In 1931 Joseph Stalin blew up the cathedral to build a skyscraper - The Palace of the Soviets , that would be taller than The Empire State Building. It would feature a giant statue of Lenin on top. The plans were abandoned when Germany invaded in 1941. After the war , it became a giant pool when construction was needed for housing. It was rebuilt beginning in 1995 , and was completed in 2000.

There was a crowd at the door and we waited in the rain and cold. It was beautiful inside (no pictures allowed). We stayed about an hour and the crowd had left and we took the second picture in the rain. A quick Metro ride to the train station and we said goodbye to our guide Irina.

We returned to St. Petersburg on the Sapsan 1st Class. It included dinner , a drink and internet connections. The internet only works with a Russian phone service - so it did not work for us. The chairs reclined , so we got a nice nap after a long day.

Ok, so now that I spent hours looking at and reading your posts, I see why you suggest a post tour. There is no way to see everything in only 2 days. But thank you so much for your information on SPB. We are really looking forward to our visit and want to get the most out of it.

We had snow flurries today in Michigan. Our fall was pretty short which means winter will be pretty long. We will survive though because we have 2 cruises to look forward to... Caribbean in February and the Baltic in June!

Thanks again for the great photo review and tips! I'll keep reading...

It sounds like a couple of great cruises coming your way. The Western Carib. is our most common trip cause we dive in all 4 ports. It's a great way for you to beat that long winter ! My wife's sister (from Bay City) does a girl cruise every winter to beat the cold and avoid the Spring breakers. We would encourage you to prioritize in St. Petersburg - you won't get to see it all in 2 days so pick the best for you. Please know your camera well before you visit ! The sites will come fast and furious so you want to catch them all. I had some new lenses and made some rookie mistakes and muffed some good shots ! If we can answer any questions - give us a holler. Joe

Thank you for your great report and photos! We will be in St. Petersburg for 3 days next June on Legend of the Seas. I arranged private tours in St. Petersburg on days 1 and 3, and to Moscow on day 2 - all with Alla Tours. I previously visited St. Petersburg in 2005, and am especially looking forward to visiting Moscow this trip.

Good to know that Nancy has these great Russian locations on her future, upcoming list. That assumes she survives her earlier “down under” visit, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Celebrity Solstice sailing, departing Sydney, going from Australia to Auckland/NZ doing 14 days on this ship we loved in the Med in June 2011. Nancy will be "riding" with us on this Aust-NZ cruise. Will share more on Russia with Nancy while we are sailing on this early 2014 adventure.

For details and visuals, etc., from our July 1-16, 2010, Norway Coast/Fjords/Arctic Circle cruise experience from Copenhagen on the Silver Cloud, check out this posting. This posting is now at 123,372 views.

Sounds like the perfect plan NancyIL ! Maybe something old and something new in St. Petersburg and something Red in Moscow! Did anyone watch Miss Universe in Moscow ? We enjoyed seeing the locale shots at night - something that we missed on our day trip. It also confirmed what we observed when we were there. Moscow like St. Petersburg has the majority of it's main sites located in a very small area. Catherine's Palace , Peterhof and Moscow require an amount of travel time equal or greater than the time spent there. There is the additional cost to Moscow as well. But it's great that you have 3 days and have seen some of St. Petersburg before so it made your decision easy. If you look at the map of Moscow you will see that most of the sites are very close together

and can be seen in a day, but Petersburg requires several days or more for maximum enjoyment.

Red Square and The Kremlin are next to each other and , in the lower left corner, is The Cathedral of Christ the Savior - all within walking distance.

We will be taking the Sapsan from Moscow to St. Petersburg next summer. Is there much of a difference between first class and coach? We're booked in coach as the TA says there's not all that much difference for the money. Also, do you have any opinion on whether to ride on the left or right, facing forward, headed to St. Petersburg? I want to get the best views.
