Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Explore Northern Ireland & Ireland alongside Scotland’s Gaelic Grandeur on This 2-Week Guided Tour

Dublin impresses with the cobbled courtyards of Trinity College and the millennia old Book of Kells. Experience centuries of rich Gaelic history as you take High-Tea at the Ardgowan Estate near Glasgow and see the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Glencoe offers a glimpse of Britain’s highest mountain Ben Nevis ahead of a cruise on Loch Ness and the chance to seek out Scotland’s most infamous bonnie monster. Up in the highlands, a whisky tasting at a distillery, to uncork tales of smugglers before the vacation embarks on a grand tour of the Scottish capital. Edinburgh doesn’t disappoint with the Royal Mile, home to Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s Crown Jewels and the Scottish Parliament.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your search for ""

How can I book flights for my tour?

When booking online, you'll be offered the option to add flights once you've selected your travel dates and room type. You can add your cabin preferences when searching for your flight. Alternatively, you can get in touch with our team. Our Travel Experts or your local Travel Advisor will be able to assist with your requirements.

Can I add additional hotel nights before or after my tour?

Many guests choose to add extra hotel nights to spend a little more time in their chosen destination. You can reserve additional hotel nights before or after your tour once you've selected your preferred departure. Alternatively, you can get in touch with our team. Our Travel Experts or your local Travel Advisor will be able to assist with your requirements.

Where can I find room options?

Select your departure date, then review the available room options under the ‘Trip Overview’ section and choose the one that best suits your group. We have options for solo, twin and triple room configurations. If you a traveling in a party of three adult guests, please note triple rooms may have a fold out bed, or limited space for three beds. If you prefer more individual space, you may prefer to book a single room and twin room for your group of three.

How much is the solo supplement?

Insight Vacations tours are the perfect option if you're traveling solo, combining the camaraderie of a smaller group with the independence of a solo trip. Many tours offer solo room share options, or a competitive solo supplement. Select your departure date and review your solo travel options in the ‘Trip Overview’ section.

What is a definite departure?

A departure is shown as 'Definite Departure' once it has reached a minimum number of guests. That particular departure will definitely run, barring any extraordinary circumstances. It is highly unlikely a departure won't meet the minimum number of guests. But if this is the case, you will be offered the best alternative dates or a full refund of any payment made. If there are ever any changes to your departure, one of our Travel Experts will contact you.

How many guests will be on this tour?

A personal experience is at the heart of what you can expect. Choose from 2 group sizes, where you’ll always enjoy dedicated attention and access to unique experiences thanks to all groups being smaller than the mainstream tour companies. With both group sizes you’ll travel on custom ‘Business Class’ style coaches that offer more leg room and larger window spans. Choose an average group size of just 33 travelers , capped at a maximum of 40 guests. These groups offer an enhanced experience versus larger mainstream tours of 50 or more. Or, choose an average of just 20 guests , capped at a maximum of just 24 guests, this choice is perfect if you prefer an even more individualized experience. Choose your preference at the top of the tour page or speak to one of our Travel Experts or your local Travel Advisor.

How much walking is involved on this tour?

With your comfort in mind, Insight Vacations assigns every tour an activity level. The activity level for your chosen tour is displayed in the tour introduction. Leisurely: Tours with typically 1-2 miles of walking per day on primarily flat surfaces and with some stairs.   Balanced: Tours with up to 1-3 miles of walking per day, which may include some uneven surfaces such as cobblestones and stairs.   Dynamic: These journeys can feature 4+ miles of walking on some days and may involve some steep hills.

Traveling to Ireland Vs Scotland: An Overview

Looking for more information before you book Ireland and Scotland tours? From transport to highlights of the trip, we’ve got you covered.

Getting from Ireland and Scotland

One of the most popular ways to get from Ireland to Scotland is by boat. The shortest crossing between the two is only two hours long and connects the eastern coast of Northern Ireland with the west of Scotland.

If you’re after speed, there are plenty of low-cost flight routes between Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Cork, Aberdeen, and more. Flight times between Ireland and Scotland are an hour and a half. The fastest and cheapest from the Republic of Ireland to Scotland is from Dublin to Glasgow which only takes an hour and can be as little as USD 18 each way. Most tours of Ireland and Scotland either start or end in Dublin and Edinburgh, so plan your international flights accordingly.

Many of the best tours of Ireland and Scotland travel around the countries by bus or coach, from where you’ll be able to appreciate more of the countryside and historic castles and spaces that lie off-the-beaten-path. Of course, to get between the two nations, you’ll need to choose between the ferry or the flight, so you may need to factor in the cost of additional transport. Private tours of Ireland and Scotland can benefit from private car transfers instead for a premium.

Best Time to Visit Ireland and Scotland

The best time to visit both Ireland and Scotland depends on what you are looking for. For the best weather and lots of events, visit in the high season—but be prepared for crowds (including hordes of people in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival) and more expensive prices. Instead, travel in May or wait until September/October. The weather is still fairly warm and dry, the crowds are fewer, and the prices are a lot cheaper than in the summer on both accommodation and travel. This way, you can enjoy your Ireland and Scotland tour without having to share the experience with hundreds of other tourists.

For a seasonal guide, check out our article on the best time to visit Ireland . Read our article and learn the month-wise information about the best time to go to Scotland .

Highlights of an Ireland and Scotland Trip

Visit Connemara National Park and be one with Ireland's nature.

  • Follow the footsteps of the stars across two countries. In Northern Ireland, jump on a Game of Thrones tour. Parts of the iconic series were filmed here and you can easily tour the locations and pretend that you’re in Westeros. In Scotland, you can live out your Harry Potter fantasies on The Jacobite Steam Train near Loch Shiel. This is the iconic spot where the Hogwarts Express goes over the impressive viaduct bridge on the way to school and is a popular tour spot for the whole family.
  • Tour the Western Isles of Scotland and Ireland. The West Coast of Scotland is home to dozens of stunning islands, all with their own culture, beautiful beaches, and clear waters, such as the Isle of Barra, which looks like a Caribbean Island — we’re not joking! On the Irish side, the West Atlantic Way is a legendary road trip route known for its coastal beauty and small fishing villages.
  • Soak up the academic history and culture at the Trinity Library in Dublin. As one of the most famous and gorgeous libraries in the world, bibliophiles will be in their element. While in Edinburgh, check out the National Museum of Scotland, where you can see Scottish contributions to science, art, and more, including the world’s first prosthetic limb!
  • Learn all about Scottish art in Glasgow. Scotland’s second city is bursting with creativity and art, including the Rennie Mackintosh Museum. On the other side of the water, join a street art tour of Dublin and see the bright and colorful creativity of the city.
  • Wander the national parks. Both Ireland and Scotland tours are filled with stunning natural beauty, from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs in Scotland to Killarney National Park in Ireland. Hike, spot wildlife, and experience beautiful views.

Ireland and Scotland Travel Tips

  • Ireland and Scotland self-drive tours are a great way to keep costs low and add some more flexibility to your trip. As the weather in Ireland and Scotland isn’t always the most reliable, a self-drive option allows you to shift your plans slightly to get the most out of the destinations you love.
  • Pub culture is real in both Scotland and Ireland. Carve out some time to visit a local pub, especially if they have live folk music on. Many pubs in the major cities and towns will have local acts, which give you an insight into the rich culture of the area.
  • In both countries, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! The weather changes every hour, so be prepared with waterproof jackets, hats, and sunblock. It’s not uncommon to have four seasons in one day!

From our travelers

Giant's Causeway

The itinerary for our trip was excellent, and so were the hotels (two castle stays!) but the absolute best part of the trip was the Tour Director. Joe not only organized and took care of all of us the entire trip, but he shared with us his personal insights and experiences that enhanced the history of Ireland and made it very real for us. I feel this was what made our group become so close, and some of us still keep in touch and plan on taking another trip next year!

Tricia Ann Barnes

Scots irish tour - 11 days/10 nights-wonderful trip and tour guides, i highly recommend for first trip there..

It was a wonderful trip highlighting both Scotland and Ireland. Guides were very informative and friendly. For our first trip there, this was the best way to go.

Cyndy Jay Rose

Scots irish tour - 15 days/14 nights-the best tour we have ever done beautiful scenery and tour guides/drivers..

The stops to see the scenery, castles, hotels, small towns, shopping ,was fantastic. The food was delicious and memorable. I think the tour guide/drivers made this trip. We were all like a big family on vacation with someone who cared about all the guests on the bus. Lucky us. One of my favorite stops was just out of Belfast to an old pub with so much character, good food, beer and local music ( Crosskeys Inn-Irelands oldest thatched pub). Colm our tour guide/driver treated us to his singing in this pub. Such a beautiful gift to share with all of us. Oh and Kilronan Castle-Wow! I think more stops for scenery would have been fun but how do you fit it all in, so much to enjoy!! The ferry ride from Scotland to Ireland was something like being on a cruise ship. For a 2hr ride it had a bar, restaurant with delicious fish and chips and a spa!! I am from Canada and our ferrys are not even close to such luxury. The back pack that CiE provided myself and my husband were great, full of useful things, maps, straps, name tags, plug in adapters. Zippered pouch for pens, combs, paper etc. Nice water bottle. We used the back packs every day!! The people on the bus, my husband and I, felt that if the bus driver felt comfortable eating with us or had time-we would have loved his company!! Even the guides like Becky!!(the Scottish tour guide) It is a good way to make lasting friendships. My husband and I are talking about returning one day and bringing family. Thank you CIE for a most amazing vacation!! Wish we were still there.

Day 10 | Discover Glasgow’s Rich Legacy

Delve into Scotland’s intriguing cultural capital and stroll through the town to admire views of George Square and the River Clyde, once the heart of Scotland’s shipbuilding industry. We head to whisky country next, visiting a whisky distillery where we’ll Dive Into Culture and learn how to make Scotland’s favourite honey-coloured drink with a chance to sample a wee dram. We return to Glasgow for some free time to explore the city.

Day 11 | Continue Over the Sea to Skye

Journey along the famous bonnie banks of Loch Lomond to the tragic site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonalds at the ‘Glen of Weeping’. Continue to Fort William at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Then, cross to the Isle of Skye, where we’ll spend this evening dining in our hotel.

Day 12 | Venture to Loch Ness and Culloden in the Scottish Highlands

We leave the rugged beauty of Skye behind and venture to the site where three lochs meet. View Eilean Donan Castle before travelling along the banks of Loch Ness in search of the elusive monster that bears its name. The bloody battlefield of Culloden is our next stop, where we spend a poignant moment reflecting on the many men who lost their lives in the brief but brutal battle between the Redcoats and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobites. This evening we spend the evening dining at our hotel in the Scottish Highlands.

Day 13 | Journey to Enchanting Edinburgh

Traversing the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, we pass Pitlochry before arriving in St. Andrews to see its famous golf course on which golfing greats have clamoured to play for centuries. We cross the scenic Firth of Forth to enchanting Edinburgh, our home for the next two nights. Tickets to see the spectacular Edinburgh Tattoo are included on departures that coincide with performance dates.

Day 14 | Uncover Edinburgh’s Treasures

Join your Local Specialist for a guided sightseeing tour which includes a visit to Edinburgh Castle, surveying the city from imposing Castle Rock. See the Royal Mile, the elegant Palace of Holyrood in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat, and the new Scottish Parliament building. As our memorable holiday comes to an end, we join our Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Farewell Dinner to reminisce over shared experiences.

Day 15 | Farewell Edinburgh

For now it’s time to say a fond farewell to Scotland and our newfound friends, at the end of an unforgettable Celtic sojourn. Find out more about your free airport transfer at trafalgar.com/freetransfers.

We are more than happy to include a flight quote separately to your package so that you can decide if you would like to book with us or on your own.  While booking flights can seem straight-forward, there are often hidden fees or classes of service that do not include seat assignments, meals or checked bags. We have been booking flights since 1985 and know the best routings and have great contracts that mean we often have better prices than what you will see online.
