Japan’s Hirata holds off inspired Smyth to win on Asian Tour

23-year-old followed her win at Fujisankei Classic on the Japan Golf Tour

Incheon, South Korea: Japan’s Kensei Hirata held off an inspired Travis Smyth to win the Asian Tour’s Shinhan Donghae Open by a stroke on Sunday — his second victory in as many weeks.

The 23-year-old Hirata followed victory at the Fujisankei Classic on the Japan Golf Tour last weekend with a closing six-under-par 66 at the Ocean Course at Club72 in Incheon to finish 22-under par on 266.

Despite a bogey at the last, Hirata did just enough to hold off the charging Australian Smyth, who started his round in spectacular fashion with seven straight birdies to snatch a share of the lead at one stage.

Smyth added another at the ninth to card a remarkable 28 on the front nine holes.

The Australian parred every hole on the back nine for an eight-under 64 and a 21-under total.

Japan’s Kosuke Suzuki, who started the day sharing the lead with Hirata, fired a 70 to take third on 18-under.

“Early on in the round I did not think I would win, so this is a surprise and honour,” said Hirata, who becomes the fourth player from Japan to win the tournament, which was celebrating its 40th edition.

“I tried to play my own game. Even if I had looked at the leaderboard and seen Travis playing well I would have focused on that I was doing.”

Hirata kept in touch with Smyth’s lightning start by making an eagle, and three birdies in a bogey-free front nine.

“Bittersweet after shooting eight under, but not winning,” said the 29-year-old Smyth, who was seeking a second victory on the Asian Tour.

“Seven under yesterday and then eight under today, amazing weekend. To fall one short sucks a bit, but my game is in a good spot.”

2024 Amgen Irish Open field: DP World Tour players, rankings

The 2024 Amgen Irish Open field is set with the passing of the typical Friday entry deadline. This week's DP World Tour field is set for this event, played at Royal County Down in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.

The Amgen Irish Open field is headlined by the likes of Rory McIlroy , Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry , Alexander Bjork, Erik van Rooyen and more.

This is set to be a 156-player field is played out over four days, with this event featuring a mixture of players from the DP World Tour in the continental Europe run of the schedule.

We do not have Monday qualifiers for this event, with this being a full-field tournament on the 2024 DP World Tour schedule .

The week-of alternate list has been determined, and the field will be updated off the list based on any player withdrawals. Sebastian Friedrichsen and Haydn Barron are the first two alternates.

The field will be playing for a $6,000,000 purse, with three of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking among the top contenders.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — An offseason full of preparation paid off for Chevrolet in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

With Josef Newgarden leading 92 of 100 laps from the pole position , Chevy drivers swept the top four spots in the IndyCar season opener with Pato O’Ward, Scott McLaughlin and Will Power behind the two-time series champion. Colton Herta was the highest-finishing Honda driver in fifth.

After his first victory on a street course in nearly two years , Newgarden heavily credited Chevy’s improvement.

“They worked really hard this offseason,” Newgarden said. “It’s not just them. We had to really improve our side and the chassis, and we were hard on them, too. We said, ‘We’ve got to make all of these things better,’ and they delivered in spades.

“They somehow I feel like gave us the whole menu. It’s pretty cool. They did a great job, and it makes me very encouraged for 2024.”

O’Ward said his Arrow McLaren team met with Chevrolet officials in London during the offseason.

“It was like 25, 20 of us at a massive table, and we just hammered down on everything that we wanted to see improvements on, everything that we thought that we did well,” O’Ward said. “And just having an honest, open conversation of what’s going on. Because whenever you’re at the end of basically thelife of an engine like this, a lot of the massive gains have been gained.

“When you gain little bits and pieces here and there, they’re usually pretty substantial. I was super, super happy to see just how receptive they were of it, and how they were just ‘Yeah, we’re going to get to work,’ and they brought us a very strong package, and super happy with that.”
